Commit or quit … it’s up to you -By Harvey Mackay
After his first night in the barracks, a new Army recruit was rudely awakened by his drill sergeant who shouted, “Rise and shine. It’s fourthirty.”
“Four thirty” the rookie moaned. “Sarge, you’d better go back to bed. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow.”
It’s time to wake up and realize that if you want to excel at anything in life you need to be committed. If you only want to be good enough to get by, then a commitment to excellence is not necessary. If you are committed to a cause, you don’t need to tell anyone. They can tell from your actions.

I often wonder how people can be happy or at peace with themselves if they don’t make a commitment to something, whether it’s succeeding at work or improving at a skill. How do you reconcile expecting desired results without making an honest effort to be the best you can be?
Ken Blanchard, author of “The One Minute Manager,” said: “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.”
Commitment is a prerequisite to success. Commitment is the state of being bound –emotionally, intellectually or both – to a course of action. Commitment starts with a choice and
is sustained by dedication and perseverance.
Wanting something and actually making a commitment to getting it are two different things. Your goals may be big and worthy, but do you have the passion to see them through? Success starts with a road map and a strategy, that’s just the beginning. You must be prepared to see the action plan through – making a commitment to get to the finish line.
Lou Holtz, the legendary Notre Dame football coach, told me that he learned the value of commitment when he was hired to coach the New York Jets in the National Football League. Holtz left after one year when he discovered it was only a job and he lacked a real commitment to it. Lou strongly believes that all human success is the result of a persistent commitment.
It’s hard to keep a truly committed person from success. You can put stumbling blocks in their way, but they will only use them for stepping stones. Committed people have a goal and stick to their plan to achieve the desired result. Your commitment is where your thoughts are.
Investment guru Warren Buffett said: “Are you a fanatic? A manager must care intensely about running a first-class operation. If his golf game is what he thinks about while shaving, the business will show it.”
Stew Leonard Sr., who founded the world’s largest dairy store that is named after him, carved his commitment policy on a threeton granite rock at the entrance of his first store in Norwalk, CT. It read:
“Rule 1 – The customer is always right.
“Rule 2 – If the customer is ever wrong, re-read rule 1.”
Leonard, who recently passed away, said this policy is chiseled in stone because it is never going to change. He credits this
commitment for the store’s growth from a 1,000-square-foot mom-and-pop store into one of the most renowned grocery stores with annual sales of nearly $300 million and almost 2,000 team members.
Commitment matters in any venture, from business to volunteerism to family life. Commitment makes the hard work that is necessary easier because you have a goal and a reason to persevere. Commitment doesn’t take away all the fears, but it does turn them into challenges that you are willing to take on. In short, once you set your mind to it, you have made the choice to see it through.
Michelangelo, the famed sculptor and painter, was committed to the point of physical exhaustion when he spent four years lying flat on his back as he painted the fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His glorious project, which left him virtually blind from the paint that dripped in his eyes, has been admired for more than four centuries.
A newspaper reporter secured an exclusive interview with the devil and was especially interested in the evil one’s deceptive techniques. The reporter asked, “What is the most useful tool you use on people? Is it dishonesty, lust or jealousy?
“No, no, no,” said the devil. “The most useful weapon I possess is apathy.” Mackay’s Moral: There is no room for apathy for committed people.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne
The Burtrum Bean Bake
The Burtrum Bean Bake is coming soon. October 7th! It's hard to think that it's that time of year again. The menu hasn't changed very much since October 16th, 1897, since the first bean bake.
The beans are still made in the way the beans were made originally. A four foot deep hole in the ground is created that is large enough to fit two large iron kettles, about 30 gallons in size, and enough hot coals to line the bottom, sides and top of the kettles. The kettles contain about 100 pounds of beans that have been boiled in soda to make them more acceptable to the human digestive system. Forty pounds of one inch pork pieces are added to the beans along with molasses and the rest of the liquid and spices. After the contents of the kettles have been added, the top is set on the kettles and they are lowered into the hole with a tractor loader. They are then covered with coals and covered with dirt until ready to be eaten, which is 24 hours. When the baking process has been completed the dirt is removed and the tractor loader lifts the kettles out of the cooking hole.
Another favorite on the menu is the the chicken and noodles. It takes about 100 pounds of flour and 15 dozen eggs to make the noodles. It also takes about 50 chickens to complete the delicious dish.
Originally, Burtrum was a good sized and active trade location. The actual date of the first dwelling in Burtrun, then called Hanson, is not known, but I think it was in the 1880's. In 1889 there were three general stores in town, a saw mill along with a metal manufacturing factory that employed about 25 workers. In 1897 a sorghum processing plant was built in the city. In 1898 the first
hardware store became part of the town. The first bank soon followed. In 1893 the first barber shop appeared. About 4 miles south of Burtrum, a railroad stop came into existence called Cogel's Siding. As time passed there appeared a creamery and the area around the depot became a large pulp wood storage area along with several corrals to hold the livestock ready for being shipped on the train. It's getting to be a big town.
The homes in Burtrum were sometimes rather small. One family, due to the housing shortage, rented a 12 by 14 house for their first winter. By today's standards, that would be the size of a nice bedroom.
Fire was an important item in the early residents in this area, It warmed in winter, burned the trash, cooked the food and warmed the bath water. However in 1923 a fire occurred that burned 5 of the town's businesses totally and heavily damaged several others. Most of the destroyed businesses were not replaced.
The Moses Dane Cemetery, the beneficiary of the Burtrum Bean Bake, was established in 1897. Moses Dane was not the first person buried in the cemetery. He died in 1893 and was buried in a cemetery west of Burtrum, but his body was moved to the Moses Dane Cemetery in 1898. This was the first Civil War Veteran, so his name was used for the cemetery.
The first Burtrum Bean Bake was in 1897. Tickets were $.25 for adults and $.10 for kids, 88 people were served.
Much of the information included in this story is from the Burtrum Centennial book, along with other various sources.

Jennifer was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia as a young child, but made the most of every day she was given. She participated in Special Olympics while in school and through her young adult years earning many awards, medals, and ribbons during her participation. Jennifer especially loved spending time with her family and friends. She made many friends at the Care Center who became an extension of her family. Jennifer was a huge fan of the Minnesota Twins. She loved watching/listening to the Twins play and enjoyed keeping track of their wins and losses. She had her favorite players over the years, one of which included Brian Dozier whom she got to meet! She always said that was the best day of her life. Jennifer treasured growing up on the family farm where she loved being around the animals. She especially became attached to the family's pet raccoon, Chrissy. Jennifer loved to listen to the ducklings quacking outside her window at the Care Center, taking long walks, and sitting in the warm sun soaking up the sounds of people talking, the birds singing, and the sounds of the water as it rippled against the shores of Sauk Lake. Jennifer looked forward to playing Bingo every week. So much so that she even had her own specific Bingo card which she had all the numbers memorized! Even after she had lost her eyesight, she would often know she had Bingo or blackout before the person assisting her did! Jennifer will be remembered for her caring heart, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor.
Survivors include her parents, Kevin and Debbie Wolbeck; sisters, Melanie (Greg) Cimenski and Kim (Mike) Dyre; brother, Jeremy Wolbeck; nephews, Shaun (godson), Colten, Evan, and Jayse; nieces, Bethany, Hannah, Kyllie, Shelby, and Hailey; grandmothers, Lorraine Sand and Ludwina Wolbeck; godmother, Karen Pierskalla. She is also survived by her dear friend, JoAnn Middendorf and family, the Messer family, along with many others who welcomed Jennifer into their lives.
Jennifer is preceded in death by her sisters, Kayla Wolbeck and Marie Wolbeck; along with other family members and friends.
To honor Jennifer and her love for the Minnesota Twins, we invite you to join the family by wearing Twins attire or Twins colors.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce
I saw something on Facebook the other day that describes a generational gap and probably more, but at least that. It read “I might not be able to Snapchat or TikTok, but I can write in cursive and do math without a calculator, and I can tell time with a clock that has hands.”
So, for those who have read these articles you know that certain things tickle my funny bone. Here’s the thing, I can say the same thing this guy said. I need my kids to tell me how to do things on the computer or figure out my “smart” phone.
There are days however, when my mind just doesn’t work, no matter how much help I get. I need the calculator, or when no one is around to take care of a computer issue, I crumble. Sometimes when I write these articles, I type a word and spell check underlines the word. Then I try a dozen times to correct it and cannot figure it out so I do what any normal person would do, and I change the word.
John 16:33 says “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus said this right before He left His disciples and went to sit at the right hand of His Father. The disciples didn’t know it yet, but their world was about to get turned upside down. However, they just saw Jesus, after He raised from the dead!
Then He said, “… But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Hebrews 11:6 also encourages us to follow Jesus and trust Him. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Pursue Jesus no matter what!
Finally Romans 15:13 says “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” That is my mission in life, to share the Hope of Jesus Christ.

Sudoku
Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game.
Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey
Dear Dave, I know when it comes to personal finance, you’re a big fan of living on a written, monthly budget. Should you do a small-business budget the same way you do your household budget?
-Joseph
Dear Joseph, The concept you’re working with is the same, but they’re still a little bit different. When it comes to a small business, you’re trying to project your income and expenses, thereby projecting your profit for the month and the next two months after that. Those three months make what we call a quarter. If you’ve been in business for a while, you can reach out further than that and usually do a reasonably accurate job of projecting the entire year.
It all really just comes down to this: You still have to plan your income and your outgo. Some small-business owners tend to forego long-term planning and live hand to mouth and crisis to crisis. Sure, they may look at the profit and loss statements, but that’s kind of like looking in the rearview mirror while driving. Budgeting’s not rocket science. The budgeting and planning don’t have to be super sophisticated, as long you’re realistic about how much revenue you’re generating and your operating costs.
A lack of planning and handling money properly—making money behave by projecting revenue, expenses and those kinds of things—are the main reasons most small
businesses fail. Then, the owners turn around and blame “cash flow problems.” That’s a pretty vague term, and in most cases, it’s a bunch of double-talk. It’s usually coming from someone who borrowed money and couldn’t make the payments or had too much money going out and not enough coming in.
You’ve got to project into the future and think about what you’re going to do and how you’re going to make it happen. That’s really all a small-business budget is. You’re saying, “Realistically, this is what we should make this month, and this is what we should spend this month.” It’s what I tell my team when they’re doing budgets. And when you think about it, it’s not even goal setting so much as it’s having a knowledgeable and informed conversation with the marketplace.
I hope this helps, Joseph!

Dear Motor Medics, I’m having trouble with my car overheating. When driven until the engine is fully warmed up the temperature gauge will move to the red line but then drops back to almost the cold mark and continues this cycle as long as I drive. This has been going on for several months and I also noticed that on one cool morning when I used my heater, the temperature of the air coming from the vent changed from hot to cold when the gauge started to cycle. The funny thing was that the temp went cold when the gauge was hot and then warmed up again when the gauge moved towards cold. What could be going on with my car?
-Beverly in Lincoln, Nebraska
Dear Beverly, The description you provided is very good and unfortunately the first thing that comes to mind is a head gasket failure. When a head gasket fails it can allow the heated combustion gases from the cylinder to pass into the cooling passages. When this happens, the coolant can no longer cool the engine due to the disruption of the coolant flow and the gauge moves towards hot. At the same time the coolant flow to the heater is disrupted and the air from the vents will cool down. Checking for a head gasket failure is done by testing the air in the cooling system for combustion gases. If gas is present, it indicates a failure in the system.
-Take care, the Motor Medics
Dear Motor Medics, I have faithfully serviced my Toyota
since the day it was new in 2011. I have taken it in for every factory recommended service listed under the severe service category in the owner’s manual. I have had very few failures in the first 150,000 miles. I say first because I plan to drive it another 150,000 before trading it off and I may even keep it longer if she holds together. The manual stops at about 120,000 but I have seen the pattern and can just repeat I suppose. Being that it is aging are there things not in the manual that I should consider to preserve the life of the truck?
-Ralph in McAlester, Oklahoma Dear Ralph,
Good job on keeping your vehicle running. In addition to the, manufacturer recommended services you can ask your shop what they recommend. Often a fuel system cleaning can do wonders for an aging vehicle that is starting to lose fuel mileage due to the lost efficiency caused by a dirty fuel system. Also at this age brake fluid and power steering fluid will start to break down or become acidic which can wear parts prematurely. Changing these fluids often will extend the life of the systems and save you money on repairs over the long term. A good relationship with an experienced shop is the best way to find out what areas of your vehicle can benefit from a little added attention to maintenance.
-Take care, the Motor Medics For entertainment only. Always consult your local shop and follow all safety procedures before repairs. Come visit the Motor Medics® online at Underthehoodshow.com.

Our ability to improve lives grows with each new membership and when current members renew. Dwindling membership is hurting VFW Posts all over the country. Many are closing their doors for good!
We are asking you to urge all family and friends that are eligible to join the Melrose
VFW Post 7050 to do so! You can join any post you want. You do not have to join where you live.
A Lie Funny
A clergyman was walking down the street when he came upon a group of about a dozen boys, all of them between 10 and 12 years of age.
The group surrounded a dog. Concerned that the boys were hurting the dog, he went over and asked "What are you doing with that dog?"
One of the boys replied, "This dog is just an old neighborhood stray. We all want him, but only one of us can take him home. So we've decided that whichever one of us can tell the biggest lie will get to keep the dog."
Of course, the reverend was taken aback. "You boys shouldn't be having a contest telling lies!" he exclaimed. He then launched into a ten minute sermon against lying, beginning, "Don't you boys know it's a sin to lie," and ending with, "Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie."
There was dead silence for about a minute. Just as the reverend was beginning to think he'd gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and said, "All right, give him the dog."
