Lessons of a lifetime -By Harvey Mackay It is no secret that I love to play golf. And it’s no secret that I have conducted a lot of business on the golf course.

Perhaps the worst kept secret of all is that I have learned a lot during rounds of golf, particularly during a very memorable recent game.

My golf partner last week was the very delightful Harold Smith, who with his brother-in-law, Don Mains, coowned a chain of 65 Tradehome Shoes stores throughout the Upper Midwest.

He’s been retired for some time now, and plays golf whenever he can.

A friend suggested I invite him to join me for nine holes, and he happily accepted. On the first hole, Harold twoputted from 70 feet. On the second hole, he got down in two from off the green.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the scorecard; suffice it to say, it was a great game that I will likely never forget.

Did I mention that he is 100 years old?

Harold expressed his gratitude for the invitation, because as he told me, all his friends have died. Our conversation exposed many commonalities: our alma mater (University of Minnesota), our love for sports and many friends in common. But I was particularly interested in his business philosophy, which we also share.

Their business model was rooted in customer service and employee recognition. Their business grew at a rate of two to three stores a year. They made sure stores were performing well before expanding further. They took their time to hire the best people for each store.

Each store had 5-10 employees who had the opportunity to work their way up.

They concentrated on promoting from within, never going outside to hire. In the small cities where they were located, the store managers got to know the local kids so that they knew whom to hire.

An employee profit sharing plan was started in 1955. Some employees had as much as $800,000 in their plans when they retired. Harold said the plan was a great way to retain employees.

Customer service was a hallmark of their stores. No one likes to be ignored, he said, so they concentrated on everyone who walked into their stores within seconds. They worked hard to stay ahead of their customers, understanding that they needed to watch the trends on the coasts that would make it to the Midwest.

They considered themselves creative marketers, offering services such as polishing customers’ shoes when they walked into the stores. They offered a liberal return policy with no questions asked. They would exchange shoes purchased from a competitor, noting that people would forget where they bought them. That didn’t matter, they reasoned, because customers would come to their stores to buy because of their service and price.

When it was time to retire in 1999, they didn’t want to sell to a conglomerate that would fire many of the employees.

Instead, they sold the company to nine key employees at a much lower price to make sure they wouldn’t have to lay off people. Loyalty to them was foremost.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Free Stuff If you grew up on a farm, it was possible that you found yourself being directed to the woods to pick free stuff. I’m sure you remember picking berries during the summer months.

June berries for sauce and pies.

Choke cherries for juice, jelly and wine. Strawberries for jams and jellies. Blackberries for jelly and wine.

Raspberries for jelly and wine. Grapes for jelly, juice and wine. (I guess they made a lot of wine years ago.) In the fall we picked plumbs for sauce and juice. You may also have taken a trip “up north” and picked several cake pans of blueberries.

Cranberries, both swamp and high bush, created a salad appetizer. We may also have picked the nuts on the Hazel bush to use in cookies, candies or simply eaten as a snack.

We probably didn’t spend much time thinking about the tastiness of these free treats. Today we remember the unique taste of some of the food items back home, but at that time we had mixed feelings about being told to go pick something, when the alternatives seemed so much more fun. After we found ourselves at the berry patches, somehow we were glad to be there.

The birds, bugs, animals and worms frequently presented a new experience

that was interesting. (Remember, there were no cell phones those days, so we could enjoy nature without interruptions.)

We would find “Paper-hornet” nests to examine from a distance. Hopefully we didn’t stumble over a “Ground Bee” or Yellow Jacket nest, because they could really cause some real excitement. That big, ugly spider made you feel a little uncomfortable. The snake made you jump just a little bit. The Walking Stick crawling on your arm gave you a little start. You finally found the nest that the Cat-bird had been warning you away from. There is a big ant hill and if you stay back from it, they won’t crawl up your legs. Yes, picking stuff was a fun experience.

When you were in the woods toward the fall season, there would be thousands of acorns. You just had to fill a pocket to take home as a treat for the pigs, who really enjoyed them. You also may find a stick that looked like it could work on your new sling shot. Have to get the picking done quick so you can get home to see if it will work.

The mothers and grandmothers always found enough time to preserve the free woodland treats, which we enjoyed all through the winter. We usually didn’t think of these preserves as something special until guests came to the home and commented about how good the jellies, etc. were. We would then say a couple of words to make them aware that we had picked these items out in the woods. It again made you feel good about picking next year’s crop.

Harold and his late wife Mickey loved to travel and were especially interested in visiting places of Jewish interest. They collected Jewish artifacts from all over the world, including antique Hebrew Bibles and Torahs.

Eventually, through a friend, they connected with the renowned Minneapolis Institute of Art. The director expressed interest in their collection and his desire to establish a Judaic Gallery.

He also explained the funding that it would require. That meeting led to the couple donating much of their collection and the funding to support the Harold and Mickey Smith Gallery of Judaic Art and Culture. The gallery is one of only two of its kind in the country.

We covered a lot of ground that day, and not just on the golf course.

You could say the game was simply a delivery method for this wealth of information. And Harold shared his best gems of wisdom for last: his secrets for a long life!

from the woodland. The governmental suggestion that the farmers should plow up next to the fence line eliminated many fruits and berries, (and also wildlife). The wooded areas are becoming more mature making it more difficult for the fruits and berries to find needed sunlight to grow.

The areas which previously grew fruits are now being turned into fields. And lastly, we just don’t spend much time exploring the wooded areas anymore, so there may still be small areas of wild “stuff” of which we are unaware.

If we decide to take a walk for exercise today, it probably involves

putting on our comfortable walking shoes, grabbing a bottle of factory bottled water and exploring the road near our home.

The walk is safe, contains no surprises and offers a respite from the excitement and frustrations of our daily lives. Are we afraid to bring more excitement into our lives by exploring the woods? You should try it, it may be fun.

Grey Eagle United Methodist Church to hold annual hog roast on Saturday, Sept. 22

By Nancy Kutter The Grey Eagle United Methodist Church is holding its 12th annual hog roast on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 4:30 to 7:00 at the GE UMC, located at the intersection of County Roads 2 and 47.

That is 2 ½ miles south of the city of Grey Eagle. A free will offering is requested at the door and take-outs and deliveries in the Grey Eagle area are available.

Proceeds from this year’s supper will go to Central Minnesota Adult and Teen

Challenge, a residential program for people living with addictions of all types, and to building improvements. Obituaries Deacon Lawrence N. Kaas

D e a c o n Lawrence N. Kaas, age 84, of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 14, 2018, at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, September 21 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating and Rev. James Statz and Rev. Andrew Marthaler concelebrating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m.

Thursday, September 20 at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, September 21 at the church.

Parish Prayers will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Lawrence Nicholas Kaas was born in Sauk Centre, MN on December 9, 1933 to Ann (Hoffman) and Louis Kaas. He met the love of his life, Agnes (Schluender) Kaas on a bus to Moorhead and they were married on April 12, 1955 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis. They settled first in Alexandria, Minnesota and later moved to Lawrence’s hometown of Sauk Centre, where they would raise their seven children. He opened his shop, and over the years was known for fixing first typewriters and office machines, then sewing machines, canvas work, woodworking, clocks and even violins. He was known for his love for Agnes and family, generous heart, welcoming hospitality, clever “fix-it” skills and a passion for always learning. He felt there was nothing he couldn’t create himself, and he passed this spirit on to his children and grandchildren.

family that he wanted his last day of work to be his last day on earth; and he left this earth with the blessing of the Church and repaired clocks on his workbench.

Lawrence’s faith was a large part of his life. He was ordained a Deacon for the Diocese of St. Cloud in 1987 and served faithfully at Our Lady of Angels Church until his death. The last Deacon ordained

by Bishop Speltz. Lawrence was one of the original four members of the Divine Mercy group who promotes Divine Mercy devotion in the Diocese. He was also a member of Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include, seven children, Tereasa and Eric Simonson of California, Catherine and Brian Gill of Sauk Centre, Joseph and Laura Kaas of New Brighton, Lucy and Sterling Schwieger of St. Cloud, Francis and Lorri Kaas of Ramsey, Leo Kaas of Burnsville and Lawrence and Amanda Kaas of Milaca; 19 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters: twin sister Evelyn Goerdt of Sauk Centre, Virginia and Donny Toenies of Sauk Centre and Sally Ley of St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes, his parents Louis and Ann Kaas, infant granddaughter and two brothers-in-law.

Serving as casket bearers will be Joseph, Francis, Leo, Lawrence, Nicholas, and Brandon Kaas. Serving as cross bearer will be Shawn Kaas and scripture bearer will be Sterling Schwieger. Mass servers will be Cody Greggory, Jeremiah Jordan, and Michael Duubeck. Readers will be Lorri Kaas and Lucy Schwieger. Gift bearers will be Roberta Kightlinger, Amanda Kaas, Emily Kaas, Sara McWilliams, Deborah Gill, and Anna Kaas.

Roger J. Engelmeyer, age 82 of St. Rosa, died peacefully surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, September 15 at his home near St. Rosa, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, September 20 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery following the service with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Roger John Engelmeyer was born December 11, 1935 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Christ and Bertha (Herzog) Engelmeyer. He attended school in St. Rosa. Roger married Mary Ann Finken on September 30, 1958 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was employed at Franklin Manufacturing and Melrose Creamery. He drove milk truck for Engelmeyer Bulk Milk and was the owner and operator of Engelmeyer Milk Hauling.

Roger also was a Renk Seed Corn dealer.

Roger was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and he loved to play cards with the guys. He was one who always kept busy by gardening, fishing, house painting, bartending, repairing cow clippers, and socializing in the community. He was also an usher at church for many years and would cut the lawn at the cemetery.

Services celebrating the life of Gary A. Dirkes, age 72 of St. Martin will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 22 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Gary died at the St. Cloud Hospital on Sunday. There will be a visitation after 9:00 AM, Saturday until the time of

the services.

Gary was born December 10, 1945 in Albany to John and Hildegard (Thome) Dirkes, he graduated from the Albany High School and entered the U.S. Army. He married Geraldyn Nathe on July 10, 1971.

Gary was a baker at the Albany Bakery for several years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Melrose VFW, the Albany Legion and the St. Martin Lions Club. He

Ray enjoyed camping, dancing, playing cards, fishing, and watching old western movies. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, where he served as an elder for many years.

Survivors include his sons, David (Therese) McCallum of Savage and Doug (Sheri) McCallum of Hanover; four grandchildren, Peter (Swornima) McCallum, Andrew (Emily) McCallum, Bryan (Danielle) McCallum, and Megan (Adam Dickman) McCallum; two greatgrandchildren, Elijah McCallum and Abigail McCallum; and sister, Lois (George) Ziegler.

Together they raised their family and farmed in the St. Martin area. In 1990 they moved to the Paynesville area where he remained involved in his family’s local farms. Lawrence was active in the St. Martin Township Board for many years.

Stephanie is the daughter of Gary and Jackie Bauer of Melrose. She is a 2009 graduate of Melrose High School and a 2014 graduate of North Dakota State University.

I’m serious. I want to know is about the tire pressure monitors and if I can reset them at home. The owner’s manual says I can. I service the vehicle regularly and they charge me for resetting the monitor every time I have the tires rotated but the rotation is free with the oil change.

-Myron in Kansas City Missouri Dear Myron, Tire pressure monitors on this vehicle can be reset at home without special tools but not all vehicles are this way so you will have to spend the money in some cases. To reset the monitors on this vehicle is relatively simple. When the tires have changed positions i.e. rotating, a relearn must be done. Start by applying the parking brake, next turn the key to the on position then turn the headlamp switch from off to park lamp three times within five seconds of key on and the horn will beep twice. Now you have to decrease the tire pressure starting with the driver’s side front tire until the horn beeps. Move to the passenger side front tire then the passenger rear tire and last the drivers rear tire. When you are done with the last tire turn the key off and inflate the tires to the correct pressure. It gets easier once you have done it once.

I borrowed the car and when I went to adjust the rear view mirror it fell off. I’d tell you the story of what happened when she borrowed my car last but she would never get over the embarrassment. Anyways, I am stuck with this mirror thing. The metal tab that should be stuck to the window won’t stick. I have tried many different kinds of glue and it just keeps coming off. Can you help me get this fixed so that I can get my life back?

At least you didn’t break something more serious. If you had, we could probably help you with that too. As for the mirror, you just need better glue.

What you need is special glass glue for mirrors that is available at auto parts stores. Ask the counter guy and they will help. Make sure to follow directions exactly, cleaning as directed and don’t over apply the product. When they say one drop they mean it. Once installed it won’t come off so be sure to align it right.

Grey Eagle Township September 10, 2018 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the August 6, 2018 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to accept the minutes. Mike made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for August.

Claims list included claims 32223238 for a total of $29,064.91.

Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included information on trainings, an opportunity for election judge training and a P&Z letter.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray began with the question of a tar project for Arden Drive, the township portion along with the Angler Drive reclaiming project scheduled for 2019. He felt it would be a good time for property owners on the rustic portion of Arden and Arbor Drive to be given the option to tar also. Ray explained that even though they are designated rustic roads, the road can have hard surface. Loren Felbaum, Todd County Engineer was present to answer questions on the paving part of the proposed road project. This brought up questions about the condition of the road now and how repairs would be handled before tarring would begin. Concerns for speed and safety were also expressed and whether speed bumps would be installed. Property owners were concerned about maintenance as they felt it is not well maintained now.

Other questions included whether the road could have the rustic road designation removed and would that make a difference. Any excavations to widen the road would require permits from the DNR and

Sauk River Watershed at least. The Township requires at least 66 ft. for it to become a regular township road. Suggestion was made to continue with calcium chloride as in the past, however, it was noted that the calcium chloride has been found to be harmful to the lake, perhaps the Township should look into other options. Arbor Drive residents were concerned about water runoff and the bank on the one side of the roadway. Rain water would be pooling on the road and in the yards. Ron asked to review the treasurer’s report before making his decision. After more discussion on when the Township would have more funds and when the bill would come for this project. Ron made the motion to tar the Township’s non rustic portion of Arden Drive.

Ray made the second. Residents of Arden Drive (rustic portion) were prepared to present the petition to request the Township include that portion of the road. They decided to wait until the supervisors and Erv H. and property owners of Arden and Arbor could review the road and estimate the cost for preparation for the tar project. They will meet on the road on Sept. 17th.

Ray reported on the culverts that had been installed, he reported on someone dumping junk and brush into the road ROW. Ray asked Erv to redo the Mary’s Lake road, where he had filled washouts, too much sand, use crushed rock this time.

Report on the letter received from the attorney on the 335th tar project, Mike made a motion to have the clerk contact the attorney to send a letter to Knife River, Ron made the second. Motion carried.

Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 10:40 pm.

Burnhamville Township August 28, 2018 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held August 28,

2018 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of July 31, 2018 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Berscheit. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about Planning and Zoning, leadership training conference and campaign for District 8 delegate.

Supervisor heard from a land owner that wanted to trim trees on Dutchman Drive, board was okay with land owner doing own work.

A supervisor also heard of a sign damaged on Essex Trail that he will replace.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5622 through 5637: Rev. $1,385.11; R & B $33,675.22. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The primary election on August 14 had 99 voters cast ballots at the township.

The tree trimming along Morrison Line Road was done.

In the road report the contractor has done a lot of gravel hauling on township roads and will start the 210th project tomorrow. The culverts on 168th street were replaced.

The ditch by Lady Lake will be worked on next.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $134,396.95. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting is tonight and representatives will go after our township board meeting.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Women’s Firefighter Expo Coming to Albany on Saturday, September 29th!

Women- are you curious about the fire service? Here’s your opportunity to explore and be a firefighter for a day!

This is an event for women by women firefighters from the area. Your community needs you! Women make up a very small percentage of firefighters in the state and nation. This is a recruiting event for area departments.

The day will start in the classroom.

Several women will share their stories, jobs and roles in the fire service. They’ll also talk about the gear, training and firefighter safety. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

After the classroom portion, you will be able to fully gear up and try your hand at several scenarios. There will be cars to cut apart with the Jaws of Life, a charged fire hose for squirting water, firefighter survival maze and others.

Area women firefighters will be your instructors and guides throughout the day.

The event is free, with refreshments and lunch provided. The Women’s Fire-

Leona R. Frieler, age 98 of Melrose, formerly of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, September 14, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 21 at Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Friday at the church in Greenwald. The Christian Women will pray a rosary at 6:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m.

1981. Leona moved to Parkview in Melrose in 2014 and then into the nursing home in 2015. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, quilting, embroidering, sewing, and baking.

Leona was a member of Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald and Saint Anne’s Christian Women.

Survivors include her children, Rodney (Darlene) Frieler of St. Cloud, James Frieler of New Munich, Steven (Jane) Frieler of Paynesville, Rose Mary (Larry) Van Beck of Melrose, Ruth Ann (Stanley) Heinen of Spring Hill, and Thomas (Linda) Frieler of New Munich; 18 grandchildren; 33 greatgrandchildren and one on the way; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schulzetenberg.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, John Frieler on January 1, 1991; parents; twin daughters; and brothers, Melvin Schulzetenberg and Alphonse (Celesta) Schulzetenberg.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tony Frieler, Jeff Frieler, Matt Van Beck, Jason Heinen, Paul Heinen, Nick Frieler, and Dustin Frieler. Cross bearer will be Amy Heinen and scripture bearer will be Lori Dingmann. Serving as honorary bearers will be the St. Anne’s Christian Women.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My husband started his own one-man, small business as a handyman a little less than a year ago. He has netted $17,000 in that time, but the business has about $13,000 worth of debt.

We’ve always kept personal finances and business separate, but what would you think about us selling one of our paid-for cars to help with the business debt?

-Robin Dear Robin, There’s nothing wrong with small beginnings. On top of that, you should always keep your business and personal finances separate. Aside from the debt, it sounds like he’s off to a good start.

I think you’ll be able to pay off the debt from your future income. If your husband started his business less than a year ago, he has spent that time trying to get things off the ground and working with very little name recognition. If he’s good at what he does, and he continues to work hard and market himself properly, he should be able to double what he made in the last year.

To do that, however, he’s going to have to spend some time in accountant mode. He needs to figure out the types of jobs he makes the most money on for the time he puts into them. I know a guy in our area who made more than $100,000 as a handyman in the last year. I’m talking about $100,000 in profit! His prices are higher than most in that line of work, but he’s the best. He provides superb quality work, and he’s always polite, on time, and on schedule.

If your husband does the research and

crunches some numbers, I think he can dial it in and make a lot more money than he’s making now. Find that sweet spot, and he’ll continue to grow the business!

-Dave Dear Dave, Recently, I loaned some money to a good friend. He’s going to help me with a big home project over the next few weekends, so do you think I should pay him for the work or forgive the debt instead?

-Marvin Dear Marvin, First, I don’t recommend loaning money to friends or family. Once in a while, things may work out and everyone ends up happy. But in most cases, it changes the dynamic of the relationship.

The Bible says the borrower is a slave to the lender, and there’s a lot of truth in that — financially and emotionally.

The big question is whether you’ve already agreed to pay him for the work.

Another consideration is how he views the situation. He may be looking at this as just helping a buddy, and he still owes the money.

Ask him what his expectations are before you guys start the job. Just talk to him, and figure out what seems fair to you both. If you’ve already agreed on a certain amount, and the value of the work is close to what you loaned him, you might discuss the idea of paying back the debt that way.

But in the future, if someone close to you really needs financial help — and you’re not enabling bad behavior in the process — just make the money a gift.

Stearns County Sheriff’s News Shots Fired - Thursday, Sept. 13 An incident that began in Osakis ended in Sauk Centre with a Stearns County Deputy shot in the forearm with an arrow from a compound bow. The suspect was then shot by officers. More than one officer from different agencies fired their weapons. It is unclear at this time who shot the suspect. Suspect was shot in the left shoulder, the buttocks and had a grazing wound to one of his hands.

A black pickup stolen from Osakis exited into Sauk Centre just after 10:00 a.m. and pulled into the John Deere lot and then ran into a building. The vehicle drove through multiple backyards and smashed into parked vehicles. The vehicle sped towards a residential neighborhood and smashed through a garage on 10th Street.

The suspect, described as a 31-yearold man from the Osakis/Alexandria area, ran into a home through an unlocked door. Officers from Stearns County, Sauk Centre, Minnesota State Patrol, Melrose Police and Osakis Police tried to clear the home. The suspect appeared with a compound bow from the second floor of the home and shot Stearns Deputy Paul Orvis through the left forearm with a target arrow. The compound bow belonged to the homeowner.

Officers fired their weapons at the suspect striking him more than once. Officers and then SWAT Team negotiators started talking from the downstairs to the upstairs with the suspect. He told officers that he had been shot. After nearly two hours, the suspect appeared from the top floor, was tasered and taken into custody. He was brought by the Sauk Centre Ambulance to the Sauk Centre Hospital.

He was taken by Life Link Helicopter to St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment of his wounds.

Deputy Orvis had surgery to remove the arrow shaft and treat a possible broken arm. Deputy Orvis is a 17 year veteran with the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. He was listed in good condition

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

September 16, 2018: Received several reports of mailboxes that were damaged along the southeastern part of Morrison County. Approximately 36 mailboxes were damaged along Nature Road, Partridge Road and Highway 25 in Buckman, Morrill and Hillman Townships. Morrison County deputies responded to the area and observed several mailboxes that appeared to have been smashed with pumpkins and wood objects.

According to Sheriff Shawn Larsen, these incidents happened sometime overnight on 9-15-2018 to 9-16-2018, between the hours of 11:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. If you have information regarding these damaged mailboxes, you are asked to call the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office at 320-632-9233.

The St. Cloud Police Department will handle the assault investigation of Deputy Orvis. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation will handle the shooting investigation. Search warrants and a crime scene investigation also will be conducted.

Homes in the general neighborhood of the incident were evacuated by officers. There was no immediate threat to the general public. Sauk Centre Schools also went into lockdown.

Multiple additional agencies assisted in the response to this incident.

Phone Call Scams: On Sept. 18, the Stearns County Communications Center has received multiple reports from citizens of an apparent phone scam. The scammers were calling telling people they have pending criminal charges against them. The scammer directs the subject to contact the IRS at a provided number or be subject to arrest. These calls are not authentic and should be disregarded as an attempt to convince you to send money to them.

The IRS does not contact people by telephone in this manner. If you receive such a call, simply hang up and ignore the call. Some have reported receiving more than one call. All should be considered a scam. It is not necessary to report these calls to law enforcement as we have received multiple reports of this scam.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Mark 7:14-23: The Heart of the Matter In the book of Mark chapter 7 the gospel turns from the outward to the inward. Previously the Pharisees are all bent out of shape about ritual washing -- an external thing. Jesus then accuses them of having hearts that are far from God. In today’s reading Jesus focuses once again on the heart of the matter.

In the Old Testament God had laid out certain foods as clean and unclean.

In the middle of Jesus’ dialogue we have have a short explanation from Mark, “Thus he declared all food clean.” Oh, is that what Jesus meant by that statement?

The point Jesus is trying to make is that the stuff from the outside of us -- traditions, rituals, especially that which is eaten -- doesn’t come into contact with our hearts and therefore doesn’t impact the heart and change the person. It is not the outward things that make one holy nor are they really what make a person unholy or defiled.

Christian piety and behavior too often focus on external things. What we wear to church, how we look to others, the acts we perform so that others can see and therefore know that we are good and righteous people. Sometimes we turn our donations into name tags so they can be hung up around the church. Sometimes we get so caught up in living life a certain way on the surface that we forget about what part of us God is the most concerned with, and that is our heart. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. That is the summary of God’s commands. The heart is what God is concerned about.

Mark 7:14-23 never tells us how we make our hearts holy, clean, or undefiled; it just lists the types of things that defile our hearts. Nor does our heart start pure or holy. In sin our hearts are wholly turned against God and towards our own evil desires. We have been told that the evil desires of our heart corrupt us but how are we made holy, pure, or undefiled?

The truth is that there is nothing, only the grace of God. Only the love God first has for us which he pours out through Jesus, through the cross, through faith do we have anything good or holy which we can allow to flow out of us.

This clean heart God provides to us through the forgiveness of sins becomes defiled through these sinful desires of our heart especially when we allow them to spew forth. When this kind of garbage listed in this passage comes out of your heart it will defile you faster than a lumber

This passage on its own shows us our sin but the saving work of our Savior is still to come. The next reading from Mark will show us what true faith looks like.

The faith, love and redemption that God provides to the whole world through Jesus is the solution to the defilement our sinful hearts are so readily able to provide. Without the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, without him all that our hearts would do is defile us even more. Now that is the heart of the matter. Amen.

September 14, 2018: At 11:40 Gabriel Colsen of Staples was driving a 1990 Mack truck for Statema Excavating when he back into a power pole at 24600 County 48, Long Prairie. The pole was broke and the power line hit a tree causing a fire, no one was injured. Long Prairie Fire assisted at the scene.

September 16, 2018: At 07:35 received a call of a low hanging power line near the intersection of County 2 and 227th Ave. in Kandota TWP Sect 12. A truck pulling a trailer with a grain bin was eastbound and struck the line, causing the line to snap and pulled the poles in. The vehicle and driver have not been located.
