Make sure that what you see is what you get -By Harvey Mackay I learned many years ago that visualizing or fantasizing is one of the most powerful means of achieving personal goals.

This proved true again at the recent women’s U.S. Open Tennis final when 19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu defeated Serena Williams. During her postmatch press conference, a teary-eyed Andreescu mentioned how for years she would close her eyes and envision herself winning the U.S. Open against Williams, the greatest woman tennis player of her generation.

“I guess these visualizations really, really work,” she said.

Andreescu’s rise has been amazingly swift. She lost in the first round of qualifying at the last two U.S. Opens and was ranked outside the top 150

women players when the 2019 season began. She won a tournament earlier in the year but then missed significant time with a torn rotator cuff. Since she returned to the tour in early August she has beaten Serena Williams twice. Such is the power of active visualization.

Numerous studies have shown that mental practice through visualization can be as effective at improving skills as real practice. You can actually develop and reinforce real skills by visualizing yourself practicing them.

This explains why visualization is part of most world-class athletes’ training: because it works! They have future vision. They see things a split second before they happen.

That’s what a place-kicker does when he comes on the field to kick a winning field goal. Three seconds left in the game . . . 80,000 screaming fans . . . 30 million people watching on TV and the game is still in balance. As the kicker begins his moves he makes the final adjustments necessary to achieve the mental picture he’s formed in his mind so many times – a picture of

himself kicking the winning field goal!

That’s all great for athletes, but what about the rest of us whose dreams of success follow other paths?

Get a notebook and carve out some alone time for yourself. Give yourself a little time to think about what things you really want in life. Make a list of everything you want and everything you want to do during your lifetime – no matter how crazy it sounds.

If you want to drink champagne in the south of France, write it down. If you want to ride a camel in the desert, write it down. If you want to own a Ferrari, write it down. Nothing is too big or too small. Search every corner of your mind for whatever you want and commit it to paper. Then put the list where you can look at it whenever you wish.

Before I wrote my first book, “Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,” I had put a Post-it note on my bathroom mirror that read, “Be a New York Times bestselling author.” It worked for me, and it can work for you.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cooking Cooking and preparing food was a duty primarily done by the ladies of the house. Looking back in history, we see big changes in the food preparation process.

Originally many foods were cooked very little. Raw meats and vegetables were the common diet.

Today we wonder why they all didn’t die of food poisoning. It’s possible that their bodies developed resistance to some of the bugs in the raw food. Sometime later it was discovered that if meat was warmed over a fire, it developed a different flavor, which was really good.

The original settlers in America continued to cook food over an open fire. They began to improve the process by using heavy iron pans and kettles, thereby having more moisture in their food. This process also allowed the cook to make bread and other pastry products. The use of the iron cooking tools was continued after cooking was done indoors in a fire place. Cooking in the house----now that was convenient!

Cooking in a fire place was actually quite inconvenient, since it was hard to control, it was smoky, it was dangerous and as the cook matured, bending over to tend to the food became uncomfortable.

Along came an iron wood cook stove. It was more convenient, less

smoky, easier to control, helped heat the kitchen and became available in many different sizes and options. In many cases it was made attractive by color options and chrome additions.

Some had a hot water reservoir, an oven temperature gauge or a bun warmer on top. Due to processing and canning the garden vegetables, there was a period of time during the summer when the stove created large amounts of unneeded warmth in the kitchen. The extra heat made the kitchen almost unusable.

The next change included the creation of duel fuel stoves. These stoves were able to cook with wood, but also operate with propane or electricity.

Thereby reducing the excess mess and heat from the wood burning process.

We then progressed to the cook stoves which we typically use today.

Along the way there were some stoves sold that used kerosene and they also tried gasoline. However, today electricity, propane and natural gas are used due to convenience and safety.

The latest advance of cooking equipment is the “nooker” or microwave. They are not best for all kinds of food cooking, but they are fast and when used with pressure cookers, electric fryers, slow cookers and electric frying pans, it’s possible to prepare tasty food. However one needs to realize that today’s cook uses about six appliances to accomplish what the single old cook stove accomplished.

Food preparation has changed. I’m not convinced that so many cooking machines that will someday need to be replaced is the total solution.

Shakti Gawain encourages her readers to go further, she urges them to cut out pictures of those material things they want from magazines and other sources and hang them up. I’ve used that method too.

It’s important to remember not to expect all of these desires to be fulfilled immediately or at all. But when you take action, like making a list of what you want or cutting out an image of a car you want to own, you open up a pathway to possibility that was not present before.

Give the process time and have faith, and it’s likely that you will be surprised by how many things on your list actually start appearing in your life.

Two-time Olympic pentathlete Marilyn King said, “If you can’t imagine it, you can’t ever do it. In my experience the image always precedes the reality.”

And she provides a very moving example of the power of visualization.

When King was preparing for the 1980 Olympic trials, she suffered a severe back injury and was confined to bed just nine months before the trials.

Determined not to let this injury keep her from performing, she spent the next four months doing nothing but watching films of the best performers in the pentathlon events and visualizing herself going through the same events.

King placed second at the Olympic trials despite her lack of physical preparation. She stated that it was her psychological state, not her physical condition that gained her success.

Mackay’s Moral: Whatever a person does, he or she must first do in their mind.

Obituaries Veronica “Froni” T. Toenies

District, Albany Community Center, and Green Thumb. Froni enjoyed playing cards, quilting, crocheting, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony, Christian Mothers, Mission group, and Catholic Aid. Veronica is survived by her children: Carol (Ray) Schneider of Meire Grove, Kathy Wohletz of Holdingford, Ron (Pat) Toenies of St. Anthony, Joan (Jim) Cremers of St. Anthony, Diane (Don) Scepaniak of Avon, Gary Toenies of St. Athony, Anette (Darrell) Wegleitner of St. Francis, Lois (John) Harren of Freeport, and Leon (Linda) Toenies of Albany; 27 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, with one on the way, 4 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters: Rita Ritter of Melrose, and Marcella Hollerman of Melrose, sister-in-law, Mary Gerads of Albany, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Norbert, 1974, granddaughter, Mary Harren, great grandson Gabriel Toenies, brother, Joseph Feldeverd, sisters, Marie Thomas, Rosalia ‘Mae’ VanHeel, Helen Hellerman, and MaryAnn Hollerman and son-in-law Roger Wohletz.

Ve r o n i c a “Froni” T. Toenies, age 99 of Albany MN, passed away Sunday, September 15, surrounded by family at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 19, 2019, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Visitation will be after 10:00 AM on Thursday at the Church.

Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

Arrangements are in the care of Miller Carlin Funeral Home.

Veronica was born on the family farm in New Munich on December 18, 1919 to Bernard and Cecelia (Kersting) Feldeverd.

She married Norbert Toenies on May 7, 1941 in New Munich. The couple made their home in St. Rosa and Freeport, before settling in St. Anthony. In 2008, she moved to Pondview Estates before moving to Mother of Mercy on 2013. Along with farming, Veronica worked for Albany School

Jeanette had many talents that included quilting, cooking, baking and gardening.

She especially loved the time spent with her family.

Jeanette is survived by her children, Joyce Marthaler of Lake Henry, Bev (Arnie) Marthaler of Osakis, Ken (Shirley) of Paynesville, Sharon (David) Marthaler of Osakis; 18 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; brothers & sisters, Ermenia Loxtercamp of Paynesville, Linus Thull of Greenwald, Anthony (Rosie) Thull of Meire Grove Herbert (Lori) Thull of Melrose, and Lucille (Ronald) Lieser of Lake Henry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2015; infant son; sonin- law, Willie Marthaler; brother, Robert; brother-in-law, Ray Loxtercamp; and sister-in-law, Annella Thull.

She was united in marriage to Donald Gerads in 1994 at Maple Island Park in Little Falls. The couple made their home in Little Falls. Together they had two children, Darin and Linzee. Nancy enjoyed sitting by the fire with friends and camping on Big Birch Lake, shopping and ice fishing.

She loved to attend her kids’ softball and baseball games and she especially enjoyed traveling. In 2007 Nancy shared a kidney with her husband, Don. Nancy and Don enjoyed a drive together in the fall looking at the change of colors.

Nancy is survived by her husband Donald, son Darin and daughter Linzee, all of Little Falls, father, Gerald Larson of Little Falls; brother, Mike (Carol) Larson of WI and a sister, Kim (Ron) Lekberg of WA and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother Loretta.

Enid Beck

Enid was born February 29, 1924 to Wesley and Mathilda (Homberg) Martin in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

She married Oliver Beck August 17, 1942 at the United Methodist Church in Sauk Centre and made their home on a farm in Leslie Township where they raised their family. Enid worked on the farm with Oliver and worked at Hart’s Press for twelve years. Enid was very active in her church and community; she was leader of Clotho Rockets 4-H Club and belonged to the following organizations; member of the United Methodist Women, Leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF), FATS Club and a lifelong member of the VFW Auxiliary. Enid served for many years as Administrator Council (Chair & Member) for Clotho, MN. She was a member of the Clotho United Methodist Church and Peace United Church. She was an avid quilter, an excellent cook and an awesome baker.

Enid will long be remembered for her

kind heart, her love for the Lord and her ability to develop sweet friendships with people of all ages.

Enid will forever be cherished by her grandchildren for the relationships she forged with them by playing with them, teaching them a multitude of skills and listening to them with her heart.

Enid is survived by her children, Becky (Larry) Reynoldson, Steve (Karen) Beck, Ron (Joy) Beck, daughter-in-law, Connie Beck, son-in-law Roger Stender, 17 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and one sister Gwen Norby and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Mathilda, husband, Oliver, son Gerry Beck, daughter Susan Stender, daughter-in-law Barb Beck, sisters, Vera, Verna, Myrtle, Dorothy, Gail, Laura Mae, Tam, Joy, Carol; brothers, Jesse, Fay, Orville, Genard and Ralph.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Peace United Church in Long Prairie. Visitation will be held Friday, September 20 from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM and Saturday at 10:00 AM until the service at Peace United Church.

Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Nancy (Larson) Gerads Benefit to be held Sunday, Sept. 29

Nancy Gerads lived with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Nancy’s journey with ALS started in the fall of 2018; she noticed and increasing feeling of numbness in her left arm and hand that would come and go. As this increased, she decided to visit her family doctor. She was then referred to the Mayo Clinical where she received her diagnosis in November of 2018. Nancy was accepted to be part of a clinical trial for ALS through the Mayo Clinical to slow the progression of the disease.

Nancy is a mother of two grown children, son Darin and daughter Linzee and a wife of 26 years to husband Donnie. They have been longtime residents of Little Falls. Before Nancy was diagnosed, she was employed at the Morrison Country Record for 32 years.

Nancy Gerads, age 53, died Monday, September 16, 2019 at her home in

There will also be a 5K fun run/ walk on Saturday, September 28th at the West end of the Morrison County Fair Grounds, follow the signs. Same day registration starts at 7:45 a.m. with the run/walk starting at 8:30 a.m. Funds raised from both events with go towards Nancy’s outstanding medical bills. Join in the family fun both days!

missed a craft fair or quilt bingo. When he found time to rest, he enjoyed watching old westerns and listening to old time gospel and country music. Dave was always a voracious reader on all topics, but especially history or current events. He was a great cook and was always cutting out recipes to try. Most importantly, Dave loved his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a wonderful example to his family and friends. He was a quiet, kind, and gentle soul and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

D a v i d P. Schneider, 65-year-old resident of Sobieski died Friday, September 13 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, September 17 at the Community Country Church in Holdingford, MN with Rev. Gregg Valentine officiating. Burial was in the Community Country Church Cemetery.

David P. Schneider was born on August 6, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Herb and Loretta (Lund) Schneider. He was raised in Sobieski on the Schneider farm and helped with daily chores as a young boy. He attended Little Falls Community Schools graduating the class of 1972. Dave worked on the family farm all of his life, taking care of the hogs and cattle. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing.

Dave loved deer hunting one week a year and the other 51 weeks a year keeping track of where the big bucks were. He was a rock collector collecting all types and giving many of his rocks as handpicked gifts to family members and friends. He rarely

Jose and Diana Morelos of Sauk Centre are proud to announce the birth of their son, Zachariah Psalms Morelos, born Monday, September 16, 2019 at 8:07 a.m. at the CentraCare Melrose Hospital Zachariah weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long.

He has two big sisters: Melody and Zoey at home, and a big brother Mateo in Heaven.

Motor Vehicle Crash: September 13, 2019: A Vehicle found in pond after minor crash.

Steven Sand, 37, of Avon, was driving his 2002 Mazda Protégé eastbound on County Road 154 near Pelican Lake when he observed a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck exiting the parking lot of “The Landing.” Mr. Sand slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision but was side swiped by the pickup.

The Silverado continued going north on 185th Avenue.

Deputies arrive a short time later and located the Silverado in a pond approximately four feet deep just north of the intersection of St. Anna Drive and 185th Avenue.

The Avon Fire Department assisted in removing the driver from the Silverado. The driver was identified as Harold Blonigen, 66, of Aldrich. Mayo Ambulance transported Mr. Blonigen to the St.

Cloud Hospital for treatment of possible minor injuries.

Mr. Sand was not injured.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Avon Police Department also assisted at the scene.

Our God is a Person and He certainly is unique. Our Psalmist brings this to our attention when he asks, “For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?

Of course the answer he would give us is an answer we already know: No one! There is no sun or planet in the sky that is equal to Him. Then he adds that there is no “heavenly being” - none of the angels or holy ones - who inhabit heaven who can be compared to the Lord. Our God is above all and beyond all because He created all.

So what are we to do? We are to “greatly fear” Him and understand that He “is more awesome than all who surround Him.” Our “fear” of Him will create a “respect” for Him and when we recognize how “awesome” He is, we will worship in spirit and in truth, in love and humility.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been saving for my first brand new vehicle for over ten years and I now have the money to purchase one. I really want a truck but with the miles I drive I’m leaning towards a car even though I could really use the cargo carrying capability of a truck. If I could get over twenty miles per gallon with a truck consistently and still have good power, I could probably go for that. I have been looking at the Ford Ecoboost equipped trucks. Do they really get the mileage they advertise and what is an Ecoboost engine that makes it so different from its regular counterparts?

Ford sees a great future in the EcoBoost technology and intends on using it extensively in future applications.

If I were to purchase a new truck today for use as a general commuter and use it for light hauling, I would be taking a close look at this model truck as one of my choices. Fuel savings are important and add up.

I have been getting recall notices for my Windstar van for several years. At latest count I have five postcards with recalls on them about my van that say they are safety related but my vehicle is working just fine and I don’t have time to take it in or want them to charge me for a bunch of other work they find. What happens if I don’t go in? Is it necessary to have it checked?

Grey Eagle Township September 9, 2019 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, and Mike Rohe, Also attending were representatives from the Rock Tavern and Erv Herdering.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the August 5, 2019 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Virginia Becker and family were present to ask the Township’s approval to apply for a liquor license at the former Rock Tavern. Ray made the motion to

approve, Mike made the second.

All in favor. Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for August. Claims list included claims 3354 - 3363 for a total of $6,920.90. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried.

Mail included a letter from P & Z regarding the meeting for ordinance amendments. Ron will attend the meeting. Also, information regarding the Minn. Fall Maintenance Expo.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray spoke with Tim Otremba and reported that the tar projects are all behind schedule. Ron will call Tim to see if he can get an estimate as to start time. Discussion on spraying and brushing- it was decided to wait with spraying, but to do some brushing of dead trees and some brush that will interfere with snow. Discussion on the cart way along 335th – it has become impassable with big ruts and a dip, a hay rack is

also on the cart way. Some options would be to cut trees along the cart way, have Erv try to level it or add gravel, need to check if the water is flowing away properly to allow for drainage. Breezy Drive – holes have been filled but need more rocks and tar product.

More product is also needed for the north end of 341st.

Additional agenda item: The insurance company sent information about the cost for increasing coverage for the town hall.

Election Equipment meeting was discussed and it was decided by a motion by Mike to order 2 of the new Pollpads at a cost of $1,300 each. Second by Ray. All in favor. Motion carried. Brown and Krueger files that were beyond ten years, agreed to let them be destroyed.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

Scams: September 13, 2019: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office wants residents to be aware of a couple scams that are circulating. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the most recent case is a person receiving a phone call from someone posing as a representative from Publishers Clearing House. The scammer advises the person that they won a prize. They are then instructed to go and buy Amazon Gift Cards and give the caller the PIN numbers. In the past week, there have been a couple of related scams where the scammer will ask the victim to buy large amounts of Amazon Gift Cards or other types of cards with pin numbers displayed.

Another scam that has been recirculating is the computer scam. Recently, a caller stated they received a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft and that they needed to install an up-

date on their computer. After the caller downloaded the update, they lost some of their files. The caller was informed to go to Wal-Mart, buy some gift cards and send the gift card information to a California address to retrieve the files.

Sheriff Larsen stated that in the reported cases mentioned, the victims did not have their personal information compromised nor did they lose any money.

Larsen wants to remind residents that if they receive an offer that seems too good to be true, it’s more than likely a scam. Scammers are ultimately trying to trick innocent people into giving their personal information as well as access to their financial data. Scams continue to be an ongoing problem nationwide and residents are encouraged to never give out their personal information over the phone.

Grants available to help Minnesota communities fight emerald ash borer The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has grant money available to help communities combat emerald ash borer and manage city-owned ash trees. Grants can help pay for tree inventories, management plans, ash removal and tree planting.

“These grants will help communities struggling with emerald ash borer to manage their ash,” said Valerie McClannahan, DNR urban and community forestry coordinator. “The grants will also be available to help communities that are not infested prepare for the threat of EAB.” Eligibility criteria and pre-application forms are available on the DNR’s EAB grant website. Pre-applications are required and will determine which proposals advance to the final appli-

On average, 20 percent of community trees in Minnesota are ash, according to an estimate from a 2010 DNR survey. Minnesota communities are at risk of losing 2.65 million public and privately owned ash trees to EAB. This places a significant financial burden on cities as they manage their trees. The estimated cost to remove and replace a single city-owned ash tree is $1,000.

The loss of 2.65 million ash trees also presents environmental concerns for communities: it will result in an additional 1.7 billion gallons of water annually entering already stressed stormwater systems across Minnesota. Managing city-owned trees can reduce this stress as well as prevent the increase in temperatures, especially along boulevards, that the loss of canopy will cause.

Emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle that kills ash trees. To date, it has been discovered in 20 Minnesota counties. To see where EAB has been found in Minnesota, visit the Department of Agriculture’s interactive map.

We make decent money, and we’ve each got around $50,000 in our 401(k) plans. What steps can we take toward becoming good investors?

-Heather Dear Heather, When you’re building wealth, everything will fall apart unless you have a rock-solid foundation. If someone has an eye toward investing, I always recommend they first become debt-free.

Another thing I advise ahead of investing is saving up an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. This is money you never touch, except in the case of a real emergency.

Once these two elements are in place, you’ve constructed that solid financial foundation from which you can begin building wealth. Most people skip these two steps, and jump right into funding things like 401(k)s, mutual funds, and Roth IRAs. These are all great investment tools, but when you do it this way it’s like building a house by starting the framing before you’ve laid

the foundation. This kind of approach is likely to cause setbacks and all kinds of other problems down the road.

What I’m recommending makes up the beginning Baby Steps in my plan.

The very first Baby Step is to get a starter emergency fund of $1,000 in the bank.

Baby Step 2 is paying off all debt, except for your home, using the debt snowball method. And Baby Step 3 is to finish growing your emergency fund until you have three to six months of expenses saved. Investing is Baby Step 4, and that means 15 percent of your household income going toward retirement.

In your situation, debt isn’t really the problem. It’s a symptom of you two buying things you couldn’t afford. Start living on a written, monthly budget. Give every dollar a name before the month begins, and break that debt cycle by developing a permanent financial game plan. Once you do that, I’ll bet both of you will end up feeling like you got a raise.

Even better, you’ll have started down the path to freeing up your largest wealthbuilding tool—your income!

The film chronicles the story of Kevin Hines, who at age 19 attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. The film also features some of the world’s leading suicide prevention experts and shines a light on people who are using personal experiences with suicide to help others find the hope they need. How to Help Your Kids Plan for College While They’re in High School By Anthony ONeal If you’re a parent, here’s something we’re both passionate about: making sure your kids have a great future. I want to help you and your kids get ready for life after high school so they can continue to college (and beyond) with a plan and a purpose! And a huge part of that is paying for school without student loans.

Yep, I said it. Your kids do not need to take out student loans for college.

People might’ve told you that student loans are just a “normal” part of the college experience, and that going to school debt-free isn’t even possible. Forget normal! If having massive amounts of student loan debt is normal, then I want your kids to be weird!

The Biggest Problem Facing Today’s Students Why am I so passionate about helping your kids avoid student loans? Well, there’s a major student loan crisis in our country right now, with the total debt coming in at over $1.6 trillion. And the average amount of debt per student at the time of graduation is over $35,000.

Not cool!

When I was in high school, nobody warned me about the dangers of taking

out loans—so I did. It got me in a lot of trouble, and I regretted it later. But now I have the opportunity to help the younger generation avoid making the mistakes I made—and here’s how you can help them too.

How Your Kids Can Prep for College Academically Acing their academics now will only help them prepare for—and pay for—college. Here are the top three things they should do when it comes to their schoolwork: Get great grades. Honestly, GPA is one of the top things colleges look at when it comes to awarding merit-based scholarships. Encourage them to view their grades as a way to make money for school—kind of like a job.

Learn how to study. Good study habits are a huge plus in high school and college. Help them find their ideal study environment by asking them what helps them stay focused. Do they need total quiet? Does music or white noise help? Do they need food or coffee? Do they get more done alone instead of with friends?

Prep for the tests. ACT and SAT scores are two other important factors in getting college scholarships. Resources like test prep books or tutors can really make a big difference, too. But don’t worry if that’s not in your budget. You can help your kids by quizzing them, or working through math problems with them. Or you can even consider borrowing a prep book or splitting the cost of one with a friend.

Phosphorous- what’s lurking in our soils?

What comes up? Fertilizer. Phosphorous only reaches surface waters due to farming and fertilizer, right? NO. Let’s dig up the dirt on phosphorous.

Phosphorous is a naturally occurring element in our soils (from phosphate rock). Todd County soils, particularly in the NE and SE parts of the county are naturally very high in natural phosphorous- in the forests, in places where no man has disturbed, and where land disturbance has occurred. Phosphorous is found in nearly every organic thing and is a necessary component to life.

What does this mean for water quality?

Generally phosphorous attaches itself to organic particulates. In areas where disturbance takes place either man-made or natural, phosphorous can travel with organic particulates by wind or water. The faster water moves across a surface, the more likely phosphorous will reach surface waters such as lakes and streams. Impervious surfaces such a well- manicured lawns, roofs, roads, and even vertical surfaces can increase phosphorous run-off.

Phosphorous is transported via urban areas, street drains and in residential and lakeshore cabins at the greatest rates. Farm fields and adding additional

fertilizers to fields, lawns, and gardens can contribute. And then there are the geese- geese scat are total phosphorous bombs. Lakes turn green; wildlife is altered; organics sink; the fill process begins.

Natural processes add phosphorous to water bodies- it’s called eutrophication in which, over thousands of years, lakes fill to transition to bogs, then forests. But let not our actions increase the rate of eutrophication.

What to do? Allow ditch grasses to reach a height of 6-8 inches minimum to trap soil particulates before reaching the water body. Raise the height of your lawn mower- a nice trim lawn isn’t required to be one inch tall. Vegetation absorbs nutrients and slows runoff.

Change definitions of well landscaped yards. Plant wide natural buffers and shrubs along shores. Plant rye or oats as a cover after harvest or leave organics/corn stover on the field to prevent soil blow. Grumble but acknowledge the buffer law.

Construct buildings, parking lots, and roads back from lakes, rivers, and streams, vegetate and widen road shoulders. Take soil tests to match fertilizer to the needs of your yard, garden or farm soils. Appreciate wetlands as absorption sponges. Let nature run its course without expedition.

How Your Kids Can Prep for College Financially Money is everyone’s favorite part of the college process, right? Yeah, not so much. But remember, it’s totally possible to pay for school without loans. Here are three ways your kids can do that: Find scholarships and grants. This is free money that your kids won’t have to pay back! I tell students to spend at least an hour every day applying for scholarships, because it will really pay off in the long run. They can also find scholarships and grants by filling out the FAFSA form and by looking through the hundreds of other options online.

There’s a lot of free money out there.

Your teen just has to find it!

Work. Having a part-time job throughout high school and college not only helps with time management and career skills, but also really helps them

save money for their future!

Budget. When your kids learn how to write down where every single dollar of their income is going, they’ll be way less likely to overspend—and way more likely to put their extra money into a college fund.

Yes, your child can go to college without student loans!

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Eating with Sinners; Luke 15:1-10 In Luke 15 Jesus is ridiculed for eating with tax collectors and sinners. For the religious establishment these were people to be avoided. However in the parable of the Lost Sheep the tax collectors and sinners are the lost sheep that the shepherd goes after. So he leaves the 99 righteous ones “who need no repentance.”

Often times the 99 sheep left in the open country “who need no repentance” are taken as the church. Yet in Romans 3:10 we are told, “None is righteous, no, not one.” We also know that those who have forgiveness in Jesus are made righteous by grace through faith. Too often the Church gets filled with people “who need no repentance,” but that is not the church. The church is the gathering of those who need repentance.

The moment we start seeing ourselves as better than sinners, “righteous and in no need of forgiveness” we become like the scribes and pharisees. Left by the shepherd until a need for his salvation becomes apparent. Imagine the rejoicing there would be in heaven if the 99 realize that they are sinners and seek forgiveness in Jesus. Instead Jesus goes out to find the one or two or three that are in need of his salvation and know it.

Too often the religious establishment rejects sinners instead of welcoming them. Imagine the church that truly rejoices when Jesus enters into their presence with a newly found sheep on his shoulders. Do you get excited, is there joy, is there rejoicing because another sinner has repented and been saved by our Savior or do you complain that Jesus eats with sinners? Or do you complain that Jesus spends too much time worried about those sinners out there?

Like the scribes and pharisees we fall into the trap of thinking that we are righteous and good, that we are saints and that sinners have no place among us. However we are both. We are saints through the blood of Christ and still sinners needing the blood of Christ. Those lost sheep Jesus hauls in on his shoulders are to become just like us. They were us. Sinners forgiven and made righteous and at the same time saints with all the baggage and issues their fallenness car-

Sometimes I wonder if people in need of forgiveness avoid the very place they can truly find it because the people in our churches are not authentically joyful like they are in heaven when the shepherd returns with his lost sheep.

I would argue that the church is not the 99 sheep “who need no repentance” but rather the collection of the lost sheep Jesus has individually sought out and found. A place where he continues to care for them while seeking other lost souls. If you are in need of forgiveness I pray that you find a church that rejoices to have you in their midst because after all you are one of them. A lost sheep needing forgiveness that only God can give, which Jesus has won for us through his death in our place. That is our Good Shepherd. Amen.
