My good friend Lou Holtz, Hall-of-Fame college football coach, said: “Virtually nothing is impossible in this world if you just put your mind to it and maintain a positive attitude.”

History is full of examples of things we once thought were impossible. Neil Armstrong shocked the world by becoming the first person to walk on the moon. Now we’re talking about people landing on Mars, and Richard Branson and Elon Musk are launching civilians into space.Remember “The Jetsons” TV cartoon from the early ’60s? The futuristic family had video conference calls, like Zoom and Facebook provide for us now. Their robotic maid Rosie has morphed into the Roomba vacuums. We aren’t quite to Hovercraft-style transportation yet but with self-driving cars coming on the market, we can only guess what comes next. How large was your first cellphone? Mine was the size of a brick, and I could only talk for 30 minutes before having to recharge it. And it was only good for making phone calls. Back in the ’80s no one could have imagined the capabilities of today’s smartphones.

So, the experts decided it was physiologically impossible for a human to run a mile in four minutes. Among their theories: Our bone structure is all wrong. Our wind resistance is too great. Humans have inadequate lung power. There were a million reasons – until one day when one person proved the doctors, the trainers and the athletes all wrong.

More than 2,400 years ago, Alexander the Great opined, “There is nothing impossible to him who will try.” People continue to think bigger and bigger. I suspect that’s why there were more than 3.3 million patents in force in 2020 alone. And I’m quite certain there will be just as many more to come.

The term “Pushing the Envelope” originated with experimental military aircraft testing back in the 1940s/1950s with the likes of test pilot Chuck Yaeger and astronaut John Glenn. Each aircraft they flew was said to have an “envelope” (metal skin) of performance. The job of test pilots was to “push the envelope” by making the plane go faster, farther and higher. Being in the envelope manufacturing business, I love the term “pushing the envelope.” To me it means challenging boundaries and pushing yourself to maximize your advantage to be better, faster and smarter and to get the results you want, in business and in life. There is a little bit of mystery when witching water. To some people it does seem like witchcraft. Not everyone can do it. My Uncle was very good at it, however he had to have a protective sleeve placed around the main artery in his lower chest. After the operation he could not witch water. Hmmm.

my readers shared some stories about water creation experiences when he was on the farm. They needed to increase their water supply, so a larger pipe was driven

near the old well. As was done in earlier times and is still done today, water was witched to determine the underground water location. In this particular case, they found a strong pull not far from the old well. They drove the pipe down, but discovered that the strong pull was created by the underground water pipe running to the house. Mother discovered lots of sand and dirt in her water. She wasn't a happy lady.

In another case the new well was being pounded until it stopped going down. It hit a granite shelf. After a bit of thought the farmer decided to wrap a couple of sticks of dynamite and set them off down the well hole to break up the granite and maybe get water that way. The result was a big bang that broke the windows in the house that were facing the well project. Again mother wasn't happy and no water was created.

Human beings need water to survive. We should drink eight 8 oz. glasses per day. I believe that many people in our area drink less than the required amount. When one sees a 16 oz. bottle of water for $2.29 we may sometimes say “I guess I'm really not that thirsty.” In my lifetime, there was always plenty of water to drink at the well. We didn't consider it to be an item that one paid for. Lately the price of water is increasing. Has the cost of ground water gone up, are the plastic bottles much more expensive or should we blame the truckers for making water cost 160% of what it was a couple of months ago.

Recycling Survey and the Future of Recycling in Todd County

Todd County’s Solid Waste Committee developed an on-line survey in 2020 asking its constituents about our solid waste program. We received 118 results. The results were encour aging. Responders had many positive things to say and expressed interest in expanded county services.Although the initial survey results were helpful in understanding resident needs, the Solid Waste Committee was interested in gath ering more information to be used to inform future recycling program decisions. To accom plish this, we sent out a second, eight-question survey to every residential dwelling on record. The questions were specifically targeted to re cycling. Approximately 12,000 surveys were mailed out. Last week we closed the survey with 1,778 responses. This is one of the highest response rates we have ever received from res idents. A summary of the results can be found on Todd County’s Solid Waste website page.

A few years ago, having enough water to satisfy the needs of a farm was a serious concern. They didn't irrigate, but they did need to supply the lady of the house with enough water to do laundry, dishes, canning, food preparation, cleaning and bathing. As the farm grew, there was more water needed to satisfy the animal needs, as their numbers increased. The original farm well was typically located in a round hole in the ground, deep enough to avoid freezing, wide enough for the farmer to easily service the pump and had enough water storage to provide water for the times when extra water was needed. If the old well became inadequate to supply the needs, sometimes the well was made deeper or another well was required.

First, what is the recommended tow rating for the truck? Compare this to what you are towing and if you are exceeding it get a bigger truck or less of a load. Make sure you take into account your fully loaded setup with all fluids and your family included at the time you weigh it. Tow ratings should also not be at 100%, more like 80% to allow for headwinds and such. Over pulling is a number one failure cause but you can still have transmission failures even without towing. We recommend changing the fluid when towing every 30,000 miles or so and observing the condition of the fluid between changes. The fluid in this truck is meant for extended life but some circumstances will reduce that life. Also be sure the transmission cooler is the proper-Takesize.care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I’m having starting issues with my 1991 Chevy full size truck. I have a 350 engine that was just rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago. When we performed the rebuild we also replaced the battery, alternator and battery cables. The starter was replaced about five years ago so we opted not to replace it at the same time. When the vehicle has been running for a couple hours and is shut off it will crank very slow and sometimes not start at all unless you let it sit until the engine cools off. The problem seems to be worse if I have driven it harder such as towing or highway

Mon., Sept. 19: Cheeseburger, potato wedges, baked beans, dessert.

Dear Ben,

This can be done with very simple tasks starting at an early age. When the work gets done, they get paid. If they don’t do the work, guess what? They don’t get paid. This helps teach them a healthy work ethic, and it introduces them to the idea that work creates money.Simply giving kids money is a sure way to plant the seeds of entitlement in a young mind. You don’t want your kids growing up with the idea they deserve money simply because they’re alive. Of course, there are things kids should be expected to do without pay, too. When you’re part of a family, everyone needs to understand they have a responsibility to pitch in and help out sometimes!

-Ashlie

It sounds like you have a starter that has failed. The first step is to verify there are no problems with your cables or battery by performing voltage drop checks on the cables and a capacitance test on the battery even though they are new. Once you know they are all good then check the current draw of the starter both hot and cold. If it is pulling too much current when hot you may have either bad bearings in the starter or a bad armature. Did you install headers when you did the rebuild? If so, there may be too much heat reaching the starter and it may need to be shielded.

-Dave

A Bar Funny

I’d recommend you both find good 15or 20-year, level term policies, with coverage amounts of 10 to 12 times your individual incomes. If you two have a change of heart, and decide you want kids later, I’d recommend converting those to 30-year term policies, still at 10 to 12 times your incomes. Why? You’d want the insurance to be there to protect everyone in the family until the kids are out on their Betweenown. now and then, and in the years after, your continued saving and wealth building will lead you to a place where you guys are self-insured. And that’s a great place to be!

I was in the bar yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to passThegas. music was really, really loud, so I timed my farts with the beats.

After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my beer and noticed everybody was staring at me.

Dear Dave,

In my mind, there’s never a right time to give kids an allowance. Instead, work out a plan to pay them commissions, and assign them age-appropriate weekly chores.

Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.

Dear Terry,

The in vestigation determined that a driving dispute took place between Woods, in the Ford Es cape, and the caller, in a 2012 grey Volkswa gen GTI, while westbound on Interstate 94. At one point during the dispute and while the ve hicles were still westbound, Woods allegedly fired a handgun from the Ford Escape striking the other male in the Volkswagen GTI. Inves tigators took Woods into custody and booked him into the Stearns County Jail on Second Degree Assault charges. This case remains an active and ongoing investigation.
