Create a mindset for success -By Harvey Mackay Like millions of Americans, I watched the 10-part ESPN documentary “The Last Dance” on Michael Jordan. His mental toughness and mindset really stood out throughout the series. Jordan was an extremely gifted athlete who worked tirelessly at his craft and was 100 percent committed to do whatever it took to overcome his competition. Nothing was going to deter him from winning. And he has a handful of championship rings to prove it. He understood that so much of sport and business is a mental game. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus was not the longest driver, the best iron player or even the best putter, but he said, “I never missed a putt in my mind.” Golf is 50 percent mental, and no one mastered the mental part of winning major golf tournaments like Jack. Baseball’s “philosopher” Yogi Berra famously opined, “Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.” Mindset.com defines mindset as a collection of beliefs and thoughts: “Mindsets are those collections of beliefs and thoughts that make up the mental attitude, inclination, habit or disposition that predetermines a person’s interpretations and responses to events, circumstances and situations.” No matter what your occupation, you need to create a winning mindset. What does this mean? You have to set goals and then prepare to achieve them. I’ve often said, “Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.” You need dedication to your craft, focus and discipline, plus what I call the three Cs – confidence, commitment and competition. Michael Jordan welcomed competition. He knew competition made you better. One of the oldest and most common locker-room signs is: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” That’s what separates the winners from the losers. Mindset even extends to body language. You need to show people that you are
confident in what you are doing. Having the right mindset is having the right attitude. Your mindset shapes your attitude, and your attitude reinforces your mindset. A positive attitude enables you to look for or create opportunities. If you take advantage of them, opportunities multiply. As an eternal optimist, I firmly believe that there is virtually nothing that I can’t do if I set my mind to it, but I am realistic enough to know I am never going to pitch in the World Series. However, I can be a player/manager of a top-notch company. I took a big gamble buying a failing envelope manufacturing company and getting it off the ground, and I’ve never looked back. While mindset seems to be a current term, it actually originated in the early 1900s; however, it didn’t become a household term until this century. One of the key influencers was American psychologist Carol S. Dweck, a professor at Stanford University who wrote the 2006 landmark book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.” Dweck believes there are two very distinct types of mindset – fixed and growth. In a fixed mindset, you believe your abilities are unchangeable. She explains: “You were born with certain traits and a certain amount of intelligence and that’s that. Many people are trained in this mindset from an early age – for instance, by a teacher who believes your IQ determines everything. You’re either smart or you’re dumb; you can learn or you can’t. If people get a set amount of intelligence, you want to prove you have a lot, although you secretly worry you were shortchanged.” Fortunately I have what Dweck calls a growth mindset where you believe the abilities you were born with are just a starting point. A growth mindset helps you unleash your potential. She writes: “You can get smarter and grow with hard work, persistence and the right learning strategies. You have a

passion for learning, welcome mistakes as opportunities to learn and seek challenges so you can stretch.” I’ve also studied negative mindsets, where people are filled with negative thinking. It’s not easy to overcome, because negative thoughts can quickly become habit. It takes a lot of positive thinking to pull people out of this rut. “Never let your mind talk you out of your dreams, trick you into giving up. Never let your mind become the greatest obstacle to success,” writes Roy T. Bennett, author of “The Light in the Heart.” He reminds us: “Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.” Mackay’s Moral: Set a course for success with a positive mindset. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Oak Fence Posts
Not many people consider cutting and installing fence posts to be a very detailed operation. Maybe after reading this, you’ll still feel the same way. W o o d fence posts had to be made of White Oak. The advantages of the White Oak posts were that they were able to last in the fence for more than 30 years, they were able to withstand pressure caused by abuse from cattle and winter snow weight and they were hard enough to withstand the abuse caused by the post-mall pounding them into the ground. The creation of these fence posts began with the selection of a straight grained White Oak tree. A straight grain can be observed on a tree by noticing that the bark is going in straight lines up and down the tree, not traveling in a circular direction around the tree. The tree needs to be from 6 to 18 inches in diameter and have few branches growing from the trunk. The tree is cut in 5 ½ lengths, which may be split with an ax or mall at that time. The lengths up to 12 inches were split by a sharp stroke of a double bit ax directly into the center of the length. This was followed by another stroke half way down
the length to help extend the crack created by the first stroke. The final ax stroke was to extend the crack through the end of the length. The post needed to be about 5 or more inches in diameter after the bark was removed. Larger diameter posts were split again to create posts closer to the correct diameter. The posts were then stored on a pile outdoors, which dried the posts so that the bark could be easily removed. Bark on posts creates a condominium for wood eating bugs and worms. The posts were then sharpened by creating a 15 inch point on one end. This was originally done with a buzz saw mounted on the front of a tractor. A buzz saw was equipped with a circular ripping blade about 30 to 36 inches in diameter. I will inject here that the buzz saw was a very dangerous machine. The blade had no shields either on the top or on the bottom. The result was that there were a large number of very serious cuts or removals of hands, arms, feet and legs from contact with this whirling blade. In later years a chain saw was used for the sharpening process, which was much more safe. This is another example of something created free with a measure of personal labor. The alternative was to buy metal fence posts for $1.75 each. When a post is needed for every 15 feet of fence, the saving is obvious. For feedback or story ideas, email Tom at tom@swanvilleinsurance.com.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office
Car Crash: October 14, 2020: At approximately 11:12 a.m. received a report of a single vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Co. Rd. 17 and the western portion of Co. Rd. 3 in Holding Township. The caller reported that a vehicle had gone off the roadway at the T-intersection of these roads. When deputies arrived on scene, they saw a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander south of the T-intersection in a harvested corn field. The driver, Ann Taranto, 55, of Little Falls, failed to yield at the stop sign for southbound Co. Rd. 3 traffic and crossed both lanes of Co Rd 17. She then went off the roadway into the field. The vehicle was airborne after leaving the roadway, impacted the ditch near the field line and came to rest about 30 yards away from the shoulder of Co. Rd. 17. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Taranto was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by Mayo Ambulance. Assisting on scene was the Holdingford Fire Department. Burglary: October 13, 2020: A burglary report in the City of Freeport. The victim had
come over to his parents’ home, which is currently unoccupied, to check on some things and discovered the break in. The back door of the residence had been kicked to make entry and the unattached garage was also broken into. Extensive damage to the home’s windows and to a couple of cars in the garage. Once inside the residence it appears that a pellet gun was used to shoot through numerous windows. The victim had two vehicles stored in the shed. Nearly every window was broken out of the cars. Some items had been moved around and those were processed for any potential fingerprints. If you have any information, please call 251-4240 or Tri-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-255-1301. Note: If you are going to be away, let someone know. A trusted neighbor or friend always works. You can also contact the Sheriff’s Office and we will put together an extra patrol call. This lets the deputies working that area know that the owner has let us know they are gone and requested we do some extra checking while we are on patrol. Bright, motion detecting, yard lights and cutting back any bushes that obstruct the view are good steps.

John A. (Jackie) Ohmann
John A. (Jackie) Ohmann passed away, in the early morning hours of October 15, with the hearts and light of his family nearby. He was 96. Jackie was the third child born to John and Elizabeth (Feneis) Ohmann in Albany, Minnesota in 1924. For most of his adult life, he called Greenwald, a town he loved and served, his home. As a very young man, Jackie served our country in the US Navy on the USS Jenkins (DD 447) a Destroyer that brought this Stearns County boy to the South Pacific. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Greenwald where he met his bride, Charlene Schwieters, whom he married in August of 1950. Together they had 11 children. Jackie worked at the Greenwald Elevator until his retirement in 1989. Jackie was a dedicated member of St. Andrew’s Church in Greenwald where he spent hours in prayer. He served as altar boy, then boys’ choir, adult choir, lector and Eucharistic Minister. He considered all of these ministries a great honor. For years, he was the parish bookkeeper, keeping neat and tidy columns in the ledgers. Perhaps though, he will mostly be remembered by others for his rich tenor voice that brought joy and comfort to thousands of congregants. He loved to sing and for him it was like praying twice. Greenwald played a significant role in Jackie’s life. For many years he served on the council as Village Clerk. In addition, he was a long-time member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Jackie was honored as part of the Freedom Honor Flight which brought WWII veterans to Washington, DC to honor them and to share with them the WWII memorial. For many years, Jackie enjoyed attending reunions with his Jenkins shipmates who, for good reason, referred to their ship as the “Mighty J”. Jackie was a reflective and appreciative man who once wrote, “...everybody should have a family like ours.” He believed that he and his family were “blessed with an abundant amount of graces” for which he was deeply thankful. His usual response to “How are you?” was a line that he lived and believed: “Never had it so good.” Part of those deep reflections came when he was hunting or fishing. He spent countless hours in the woods and on the lakes, with his strong internal compass always guiding him like the North Star. Jackie is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 70 years, Charlene, and their children, Peg (Paul) Mercer of Long Lake, MN, Pat (Bruce) Milbrett of Forest Lake, MN, John (Pam) of Wasilla, AK, Susan Keen of Cambridge, MN, Lisa (Joseph) Krause of Corvallis, OR, Laurie (Doug) Schley of Mounds View, MN, Steven (Lisa) of Ham Lake, MN, Michael of Lino Lakes, MN, Tina (Angus) Rowe of Zagreb, Croatia, and Sarah Sommers of Reno, NV. His survivors also include 22 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, his brother Fr. Daniel Ohmann, his sister, Janet (John) Haas, sisters-in-law Erna Ohmann, Gloria Ohmann, Joan (Jerry) Ehresmann and many nieces and nephews. Jackie was preceded in death by his daughter Kate, his parents John and Elizabeth, his parents-in-law Leo and Carrie (Nathe) Schwieters, brothers Albert, Urban, Reuben, and sisters Mabel Kraemer and Sr. Elizabeth “Kizzie” Ohmann. Due to current circumstances, Jackie’s family will mourn and celebrate him in a private mass and burial at St Andrew’s Church in Greenwald. For friends and family, be prepared to celebrate his life in true Ohmann fashion sometime next summer with open arms and good cheer. Memorials in his name for St. John’s - St. Andrew’s School
in Greenwald or to the fund established by Fr. Danny in support of the education of the Watatulu children in Tanzania, can be directed to the Ohmann Family, Peg Mercer, PO Box 28, Melrose, MN 56352. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game.
Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ve been trying to get my sister and her husband on your plan, but they’re hesitant to try living on a budget. They make good money, and both of them think doing a budget every month would be too difficult and take too much time. Do you have any suggestions I could pass along that might make them realize that making a budget isn’t so hard or time consuming? -Kelsey Dear Kelsey, Believe me, I hear those excuses all the time. In most cases, the people who say these kinds of things don’t really understand what a budget is or how to efficiently put one together. If you’ve followed my advice, you learned first-hand that budgeting isn’t scary once you get the hang of it. Household budgets don’t need to be about hours of tedious math and complicated formulas. Like most things in life, simple is usually best. A good way to simplify budgeting, especially for couples, is by making it a team effort. It’s important to make sure your spouse is on board, and knows what’s up with the budget, because you’re just asking for problems when one spouse is doing all the planning and the other is doing all the spending. Sit down together for a few minutes, once a month, and have a budget meeting where you look at your income, your outgo, and you both give every dollar a name and a job to do. It’s really that simple. Share your ideas, your hopes, and your dreams for the future, as well as the fears you have. The important thing is that you’re both in agreement and working together. That alone

will make your lives, your budget, and your money easier to handle. Also, make sure you have cut up all your credit cards and closed the accounts. No more credit cards means fewer bills to add to the budget, fewer complications, and zero worries about fees and interest rates. Stick to using a debit card and cash. After all, they’re both part of the plan! Making a schedule for budget meetings and bill payments is a good idea, too. You can even make your budget meetings a fun time by including your favorite snacks. Set up auto drafts out of your checking account to pay bills, and buy your groceries on a set day every week or twice a month. When you know what to expect and when, it takes a lot of stress and potential pitfalls out of the budgeting picture. There’s always some work and discipline that goes along with gaining control of your money. But a budget doesn’t need to be torture. A little planning, communication, and some basic math will go a long way— and it won’t be nearly as time consuming, or as difficult, as you think! -Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Automotive Advice from The Under the Hood® Show
Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2017 Chevrolet impala with 56k miles on it and I really love the car. I take what I call extremely good care of it. So far I have changed the oil every 3k miles which I know is excessive for this year car and have used only synthetic oil in it and recently I changed the transmission oil when it hit 50k. I have also done a full inspection of the brakes and all other components at each oil change. This was my first new car purchase and I plan to either keep it for an awfully long time and avoid trouble from lack of maintenance or have a great car with all service records to sell someday. My problem is that during the last oil change I went to add washer fluid to the tank and mistakenly added engine antifreeze. I noticed when I used the washers and the windshield just smeared. Have I ruined the system? How do I repair this? - Collin in Fort Dodge, Iowa Collin, you are not the first person to do this or the last. Engine coolant is messy on glass, but usually has no lasting effects if you completely empty the tank and add new washer fluid. Sometimes it’s as simple as draining the tank by running the pump with a washer hose disconnected and pointed into an empty container. It also may be easier to remove the tank to drain it. - Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2019 Ford F150 and I plan on driving it for a few hundred miles. I am an over the road salesman and I usually put 70k miles or more a year on my vehicles. I wanted a truck for the convenience of 4-wheel drive and the ability to store some of my wares in the back. I bought the one with the ecoboost v6 for fuel economy but when I am driving, I get anywhere from 25 on the high end to 11 both on the highway depending on the wind and temperature. Is

this normal? How long can I expect one of these vehicles to last and is there any way I can increase the fuel mileage? - Jeff in Kearney, Nebraska Jeff, these trucks when equipped with this model engine do have a large swing in fuel mileage as reported by our radio show listeners and our customers. If you are driving unloaded with no wind the mileage is good but a headwind or trailer or full load will greatly reduce the mileage. Its just the nature of the engine. If you reduce your speed especially during towing or loaded or windy conditions you should see an increase in economy. That is the only way to make a real difference in economy. As for the engine longevity we have seen them with 250k miles, and we have seen them fail at 50k miles. Depending on use and care. -Take care, the Motor Medics For entertainment only.
