Celebrating Entrepreneurship Month -By Harvey Mackay Each year since 2011, the month of November is celebrated as National Entrepreneurship Month in the United States, a time to recognize the entrepreneurs who serve their communities and bolster the American economy by creating employment for tens of millions of people. During the second full week of November, Nov. 13-19 this year, we also recognize the American spirit of entrepreneurship abroad by celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week.

For people like me, this is a special time. Not that there’s some big celebration, or presents, or songs or even a Hallmark card selection. No, it’s just the idea that we can celebrate people who take risks to bring their ideas to the marketplace, and sometimes win big. From my perspective, the entrepreneur is the unsung hero of our economy.

In the business world, the reason the entrepreneur is a different breed is that instinct often plays a crucial role in what an entrepreneur does and who he or she is.

From conception – that “eureka” moment – businesses that evolve from bold risk taking frequently play by different rules than the typical organization.

Entrepreneurs are problem solvers.

Entrepreneurs inhabit an almost mystical world of inspiration, innovation and the subconscious. They are people in touch with their “inner child.” Like children, entrepreneurs can be impulsive, uninhibited and relentlessly experimental. These qualities aren’t exactly rampant in mainstream business.

For inspiration, I love to read about entrepreneurs. For example, Eli Whitney got

the idea for the cotton gin by watching a fox try to raid his chicken coop. The fox couldn’t get in the coop, but it managed to get most of the feathers from his prey through the mesh.

Whitney then began experimenting with a claw or rake to pull cotton fibers through a grid and leave the seeds behind.

Nolan Bushnell was always interested in electronics going back to his days as a ham radio operator when he was just 10 years old.

The video game craze began with his invention of Pong in the early 1970s, and he went on to found Atari when he was only 29.

Nina Blanchard, like many entrepreneurs, failed in business and went bankrupt as the owner of a franchised modeling school.

She invested her last $300 in a Los Angeles modelling agency, thinking many of the models her school trained needed work.

Photographers began calling her immediately but fearing that her models weren’t ready for prime time yet, she announced they were unavailable. Word spread around town that the Blanchard Agency’s models were always booked, which attracted other models who wanted to be represented by the hottest agency in town.

Jack Newton Daniel was seven years old, living in a small Tennessee town when he was offered a job as a houseboy for a Lutheran minister who was also a merchant, farmer and whiskey distiller. Jack was interested in learning the mysteries of making moonshine and sour mash. When his boss’s congregation pressured him to choose between the pulpit and his business, he offered his now 13-year-old apprentice the opportunity to buy his distillery on credit. In 1960, Jack Daniels bought the whiskey business that bears his name.

W.E. Boeing was a timber trader who was also a hobbyist aviator. He got into the business of making airplanes when his own plane broke down, and he couldn’t get replacement parts.

Since business was slow at first, his company also manufactured furniture and speedboats.

Whitney Wolfe Herd flipped traditional dating dynamics by letting women make the

first move when she created Bumble in 2004.

Within one year, the app had reached over 15 million conversations and 80 million matches.

She became the world’s youngest female selfmade billionaire and the youngest female CEO to ever take a company public in the U.S. Wolfe Herd dethroned Katrina Lake as the youngest woman to take a company public. Lake founded Stitch Fix in 2011 before taking it public in 2017. Stitch Fix is an online shopping company that leverages data science and human stylists to pick out personalized outfits for busy working women as well as fashion options for all ages.

My own story pales in comparison to these superstars, but after more than 60 years in business, I’m quite satisfied that the leap of faith I took was worth it. Sure, there are a few things I would do differently. But I would never give up my resolve to make it work.

Mackay’s Moral: The first step to getting anywhere is deciding you are no longer willing to stay where you are.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cold Weather

Well, it finally came. We knew that the cooler temps would be a part of our lives sometime before Christmas.

We now find ourselves dealing with frost and chilly winds. We also find ourselves with an answer to the question of why so many of our friends head south to hide from Minnesota winters.

Is it really that cold? No. If it was January, this not-so-cold weather would have us thinking of spring and looking over the seed catalogs. We just need to adjust our bodies to the fall climate. For some of us it happens quickly, but for others not-so-quick. I think one of the primary factors is the clothes we wear.

Today, it seems that although the temperature has dropped, we still attempt to maintain our appearance of being in style.

There are new attractive outerwear available, we like what they look like, but they are designed to look good, be light weight and be comfortable. Its like,”I think I have an attractive coat, but the wind seems to go right through it.” New, fresh appearances were created by new light-weight types of insulation that is either chilly on a cool day, or doesn't allow your body to breathe, making you feel damp and uncomfortable.

In the years past, we depended on natural fibers to keep us warm. I can remember a sheepskin coat as the warmest item of coat available. It was usually larger than the body it covered. It weighed about 20 pounds, which was a big help getting traction in the snow. It, being the skin of a sheep, absolutely did not allow any wind to reach your body. It was actually quite ugly, so classy people didn't want to buy it from you. Pa would put on the sheepskin when it was -20 with a strong

northwest wind and walk over a half mile to the fish house. An older neighbor fellow wearing his sheepskin, would walk about a mile across the field to my grandparents every Wednesday night to play cards. I suppose a buffalo robe would have been warm too, but I never had the opportunity to put one on.

One other item for winter wear was wool.

Your feet were frequently smothered in a pair of home-knit wool socks that were a Christmas present from Grandma or your favorite Aunt.

They were about ½ inch thick and may have kept your feet warm even if you were walking outdoors with no shoes on. However there was usually a pair of felt shoes over the socks along with a pair of 5 buckle overshoes.

The problem with 5 buckles was that they frequently came unbuckled and caught on the buckles on the other boot and tore off making them 4 or 3 buckle boots.

We are now going to discuss long johns.

Originally, they were sometimes knit from wool yarn, but as years passed, they were purchased at Sears or Wards. They were either red or grayish white. These items were sometimes worn during all of the seasons, however it was said that they were washed in both spring and fall. Wool shirts also fought off the cold making them the common winter wear. They were very desirable, because they came in many attractive colors. These

Obituaries

Donna R. Kociemba

Donna R. Kociemba, age 93 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ben Kociemba officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking concelebrating. Interment was in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Donna Rose Achman was born December 28, 1929 in Avon, Minnesota to Albert and Rose (Timmer) Achman. She was united in marriage to Alois Kociemba at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon, Minnesota. Donna with her husband, Al, owned and operated Al’s Red Owl grocery store for 35 years before turning ownership over to her son and daughter-in-law, Ernie and Denise. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Mothers. Donna loved to bake, read, play cards, play board games with the grandchildren, golf with family, and spend special time with her family on Little Birch Lake.

Survivors include her children, Bruce (Deborah) Kociemba of Melrose, Gary (Janet) Kociemba of Avon, William Kociemba of Clearwater, Ernest (Denise) Kociemba of Grey Eagle, Carrie Godinez of Santa Ana, California, Chrissie Hill of St. Cloud, John (Linda) Kociemba of Grey Eagle, and Julie Beste of Crosslake; 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alois Kociemba; parents, Albert and Rose Achman; grandchildren, Matthew Hill and Dustin Kociemba; and siblings, Vernon Achman, Gilbert Achman, Jerome Achman, and Renee Fryman.

Dennis E. Zimmerman, age 81 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at his cabin in Erhard, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, November 4 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Dennis Ervin Zimmerman was born March 30, 1942 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Ervin and Gladys (Boese) Zimmerman. He graduated from Pelican Rapids High School and furthered his education by attending North Dakota State School of Science and Moorhead State University. He was united in marriage to Carol Johnk on August 23, 1963 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin, Minnesota.

Dennis and Carol moved to Sauk Centre in 1963 and Dennis worked at First National Bank and National Register Company before becoming a teacher.

Dennis was a business teacher at Sauk Centre High School for 33 years, retiring in 2000. As a DECA and BPA advisor, he took many students on trips to present at state and national competitions.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre and Ducks Unlimited. He became a member of Sauk Centre Lions Club and had 48 years of perfect attendance. During this time he served as club secretary for over 25 years, club president, District 5M4 Cabinet and District 5M4 Governor. He took great pride in his service with the clubs and received high honor awards including the International President’s Award (2nd highest award) and International Leadership Award (3rd highest award). When he wasn’t working on a Lions’ meeting or newsletter, his hobbies included gardening and sharing his vegetables with others, hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards, spending time at the lake cabin near Fergus Falls, and being with family.

Dennis had a great love for his family and was deeply interested in their lives. Survivors include his significant other, Karen Achter; sons, Joey Zimmerman of Celina, Texas and David (Deb) Zimmerman of Redmond, Washington; son-inlaw, John (Shelia) Mayo; six grandchildren, Melia, Peyton, Megan, & Taylor Zimmerman and Lindsay Mischke & Tyler Mayo; and sister, Darlene (Robert) Borene of Owatonna.

Dennis was in death by his parents; wife, Carol Zimmerman; and daughter, Debbie Mayo.

Memorials are preferred to Sauk Centre Lions Club.

Rosemary J. “Rosie” Bauer, age 64 of Albany, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at her home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 30 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating. A private burial will be at Camp Ripley in Little Falls at a later date.

Rosemary Juanita Bauer was born May 4, 1959 in Melrose, Minnesota to Edmund and Delores (Jacobs) Roerick. She was united in marriage to David Bauer on October 31, 1987 in St. Francis, Minnesota. Rosie worked with Lisa Meyer at Salon Progressive for 20 plus years.

She enjoyed visiting and taking care of her clients and traveling, but most of all, she loved her husband, children, and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Dave Bauer; children, Kalie (Joe) Klaphake, Brittany (Jacob) Scepaniak, Brianna (Kevin) Young, and Jonathan (Sara) Bauer; grandchildren, Peyton, Jack, and Stella Klaphake, William Scepaniak, Theodore, Edmund, and Charlie Young, and soon to be baby Bauer; and siblings, Kathy (Roger) Roske, Dennis Roerick (special friend, Cindy), Diane (Jerry) Zierden, Richard (Pam) Roerick, Marlene Roerick, Carol (Dan) Dobmeier, Kevin Roerick (special friend, Annie), Elaine (Larry) Hoeschen, and Dan (Sarah) Roerick.

Mark J. Westbrock, age 6 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, November 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In honor of Mark, please wear something purple to the memorial service.

Mark Jeffrey Westbrock was born November 22, 2016 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Jordan and Molly (Schouweiler) Westbrock.

Mark loved the color purple and everything to do with it. He loved to be around people. His infectious smile brightened everybody’s day. He will be deeply missed.

John Joseph Olson

John Joseph Olson, age 88, died Monday, October 30, 2023 at CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m.

Saturday, November 4 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday at the church.

John was born December 14, 1934 to John F. and Mary (Pflipsen-Thull) Olson in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School with the Class of 1953. He began working as a printer’s devil at the Sauk Centre Herald as a senior in 1953, and that lead to a lifetime in the newspaper and printing industry. After graduation John continued at the Herald for five years, then moved to Litchfield to work as a printer at Reed Printing.

John worked as a linotype operator at the St. Cloud Daily Times from 1959 through 1967. It was there he met his wife of 57 years, Roberta Malcheski. They were married May 7, 1966 at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in St. Cloud, and then began a life-long career of weekly newspaper ownership in March of 1968. They owned the Fertile MN Journal 1968-1983; The Osakis MN Review 1989-2001; The Bayfield County Journal at Washburn, Wis., 1992-94.

John was employed by Stearns County Publishing Inc. as advertising manager and print shop manager at the Melrose Beacon and Albany Enterprise from 1985-1990. He was inducted into the Minnesota Newspaper Assn. Half Century Club in 2003.

John volunteered more than 27 years at the Maynard News, the Minnesota Newspaper Museum at the MN State Fair, where he served as a linotype operator and newspaper press operator.

John has been an active member of Lions Clubs International since 1966, serving as president of the Fertile, Sauk Centre and Washburn, Wis. Lions Clubs. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 1989, the President’s Award, and his pin for 50 years of perfect attendance.

John chaired the Sauk Centre Lions Clown Committee for 20 years and attended the Mooseburger Clown Camp in 2001 and 2002. He had been a parade clown as “Skippy” for many years.

He served as chairman of the Fertile MN and Washburn WI Chambers of Commerce, and was named the Citizen of the Year in Fertile in 1978 for establishing the state’s first satellite medical clinic in Fertile in 1970.

A member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, John sang in several OLA choirs since 1983, along with St. Paul’s Funeral Choir.

John was instrumental in the establishment of the Class of 1953 Dollars for Scholars scholarships which awarded more than 50 scholarships since 1986. His affiliations include the Knights of Columbus, Boating for Seniors, and the Silver Sneakers program. John was an avid golfer, and enjoyed ice fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta; children, John Carl (Beth Puzo) Olson of Temecula, California, Phyllis Olson of Chicago, Illinois, and Adam (Leah) Olson of Chanhassen; six grandchildren, Calah, Jake and Ava of Murrieta, California, Ashley (Chris) Thomas of San Marcos, California, Anthony Puzo of Carlsbad, California, and Jack, Paige and Natalie Olson of Chanhassen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters, Herbert, Alfred (Billie) and Walter Thull; Marcella (Earl) Weisner, Phyllis (Joseph) Cirnigliaro, Eleanora (Herbert) Pastien, and Dorothy (Alvin) Mastley.

Memorials are preferred to Class of 1953 Dollars for Scholars or the Eagles Healing Nest.

Valerie Ann Hoffman

Isaac and Sara Hoffman are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Valerie Ann Hoffman, born October 16, 2023 at 7:43 p.m. by Dr. Sayovitz at CentraCare Health System-Sauk Centre.

Valerie weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

Siblings are Natalee age 12, Connor age 9, and Alexander age 3, all at home.

Grandparents are Gust and Delores Hoffman of Grey Eagle, and Dan Engle of Long Prairie. Great grandmother is Janis Schoeneck of Alexandria.

Robert J. “Bob” Breth

Robert J. “Bob” Breth age 74, of Melrose, died October 23, 2023 with his family by his side at the Paynesville Care Center from complications of dementia. He had been a resident there for the last year.

A public burial was held Wednesday, November 1 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. A Celebration of Life followed at the American Legion in Melrose.

Robert John Breth was born in Melrose, Minnesota on February 2, 1949 to Leo and Eleanor (Schmitz) Breth. Bob graduated from Melrose High School in 1967 and continued his education at Alexandria Technical School with certification in welding. He returned to Melrose and worked until he was drafted in January of 1969. He served in the US Army as a mechanic for helicopters and was part of the 101st airborne.

Bob was honorably discharged on February 7, 1973. Upon returning to Melrose, Bob worked for Kraft Foods and later Land-O-Lakes until 2005. He met his future wife, Cheryl Smith in October 1978. They were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on July 17, 1982.

Bob was a lover of anything with a motor. He loved to tinker with lawnmowers, snowblowers, and anything he could. Bob also loved to be outside, no matter the weather. He was always an animal lover with many pets.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 101 and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 in Melrose.

Bob is survived by his wife, Cheryl Breth of Melrose; two sons, Andy of Melrose and Ryan of Fargo, North Dakota; siblings, Betty Kemper of Melrose, Larry (Simone) Breth of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada, Jerry (Marilyn) Breth of St. Cloud, and Pat (Mary) Breth of Melrose; brother-in-law, Jay Smith of Maple Plain; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and greatnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Ronald; parents-in-law, John and Virginia Smith; and brothers-in-law, Marvin Kemper and Scott Smith.

Edward "Ed" Berscheid

Edward J. “Ed” Berscheid, age 98 of Sauk Centre, formerly of Grey Eagle, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Little Sauk Legion. Inurnment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Tuesday at the church.

Edward Joseph Berscheid was born September 13, 1925 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Nicholas and Mae (Pluth) Berscheid. He graduated from Grey Eagle High School and served in the U.S. Navy stationed on the USS Lexington during World War II. After the military, he married Rosalie Ahrens on September 19, 1950 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Ed worked in construction in the Twin Cities for 16 years. He purchased the Ward Springs Store which he owned and operated for 10 years. He then farmed full time until 1987 when he retired.

Ed and Rosalie continued living on the farm until 2007 before moving to Sauk Centre.

Ed enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, fishing, hunting, gardening, tending to his apple trees, and taking care of his dogs. One of Ed’s biggest joys was taking his grandchildren around the farm showing them the fruits of his labor. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk.

Survivors include his children, Susan (Paul) Dierkhising of St. Cloud, Dianne (Roger) Petersen of St. Cloud, Mike Berscheid of St. Cloud, and Bill (Suzanne) Berscheid of Elk River; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Pat Berscheid of Grey Eagle.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosalie Berscheid on November 17, 2017; and brothers and sisters, Donald Berscheid, Dorothy Jacobs, Lorene Bitz, Arnold Berscheid, Clarence Berscheid, and Julian Berscheid.

Some problems can be prevented with focused driving. A driver who is aware of their surroundings can avoid many common problems. First off, many teens I speak to don’t know what to do about a flat tire. This is one of the easiest things to take care of but without proper knowledge can be very intimidating and even dangerous. Go over the procedures for installing a spare and don’t forget safety first like making sure the car is in a safe location before attempting a change.

If you are getting pulled over often you must be doing something to attract attention to yourself. Here are just a few things that will draw attention. Being the only car on the road, this puts all eyes on you. Passing too quickly, by darting out, around, and back in quickly, it looks like you are traveling faster than you may be. If you are traveling too fast, slow down. Loud music and dark tinted windows, and loud exhaust never help either. In general, you want to be as incognito as possible. Don’t draw unneeded attention to yourself. If you do get pulled over the number one way to avoid that ticket is to be polite. The officers are doing their jobs and will be making the choice of ticket or not. Being rude is a surefire way of making sure they do their job as thoroughly as possible.

We generate about 25% more trash during the holiday season than any other time of the year, which is harmful for the planet and your health. Creating more trash during the holidays means more air and water pollution from making more stuff, more trash going into landfills because we aren’t planning for recycling and composting at large family gatherings, and more trash from gift wrap, unwanted gifts, and seasonal decor. Choosing to take a few of the following actions will help you have a more sustainable holiday season and feel good about celebrating without trashing the planet.

Purchase recyclable and compostable products and put out labeled recycling bins for guests. Regular paper plates are not recyclable or compostable, but with a little research, you can buy compostable alternatives, and sometimes recyclable ones. Capture beverage containers and other recyclables by putting out a box or extra waste bin labeled ‘recycling’ to make sure guests know what to do. Check our website for info. on what can be composted at the Food Waste Drop-Off sites, including compostable plates and utensils. Here are some additional tips on recycling right for the holidays: • Regular wrapping paper is not recyclable, it is often too glossy, embellished and crumpled for recycling • Plain printed holiday cards are recyclable, photo cards or embellished cards are not • Glossy gift bags are not recyclable but should be reused • String lights can be dropped off at the Recycling Center or Transfer Stations to be recycled with electronics Give consumable gifts or experiences.

We all have at least a few gifts sitting around unused that we didn’t want or don’t intend to use but can’t decide whether to throw away or donate, or just continue to hide in the closet.

You can still give gifts, but stick to things that can be used up, particularly for adults who can usually purchase exactly what they want or need already. Coffee, chocolate, soap, favorite candies, and other ‘consumable’ gifts are popular choices. For those that have everything – try a massage, manicure, tickets to an event, a weekend at a waterpark for kids, or other fun activities that don’t require storage or donation. Need a last-minute gift? Give a donation in someone’s name to a cause they care about.

Use reusable gift wrap or reuse your gift bags. We know, you all love to rip that wrapping paper, but it’s not recyclable, and an estimated 50,000 trees are cut down every year to make it. Even wrapping just three gifts per family in reusable fabric wrapping, reused brown paper bags decorated with stamps or markers, or reused gift bags from last year could make a difference.

Compost your food waste. Even at the best of times, about 25% of our residential garbage is wasted food and food scraps, and that amount goes up during the holidays. You can purchase a compost bin locally and start composting any plant-based food waste at home or use a Food Waste Drop-Off site to compost all food waste and even compostable products like plates and napkins. Even if you don’t compost all the time, you can cut holiday waste by using a Food Waste Drop-Off site for large family gatherings.

Thrift some items instead of buying new.

You can find many useful holiday things at your local thrift store. Some of our favorites include extra baking dishes (instead of the disposable foil ones), fancy serving dishes, extra food storage containers you can send home with guests, vintage scarves for wrapping

gifts, and décor!

Choose décor with the planet in mind.

Skip the cheaply made decorations that just add more ‘stuff’ to the planet – opt for higher quality items you can use year after year, thrifted décor (there is a lot of it out there already!) or flowers, greenery, pinecones and other natural décor that you can bring to a yard waste site later instead of putting in the trash.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Crash: October 26, 2023: At approximately 1:10 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of County Road 3 and 355th Street in St. Wendel Township.

Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that a 2007 Chrysler van driven by Stacey Feltus, 50, of Albany, had been traveling northbound on County Road 3 and a 2014 Chrysler van driven by Michael Mergen, 64, of Albany, had been traveling westbound on 355th Street.

Mergen then attempted to make a left-hand turn onto County Road 3. It was determined that Mergen failed to yield to Feltus causing the crash.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, St. Stephen Fire and Rescue, and Mayo Ambulance responded to the scene. Feltus reported no injuries and Mergen was transported to St. Cloud Hospital for minor injuries. Mergen also had two passengers in his vehicle that were uninjured.

Crash: October 29, 2023: At approximately 2:56 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a report of a single-vehicle crash. It was reported that a vehicle left the roadway and crashed into some trees near 36474 County Road 9 in Avon Township. Stearns County Deputies were dispatched to the scene along with Avon Fire and Rescue and Mayo Ambulance.

Upon arrival responders located a 2019 Ford F150 against some large trees. It appeared the truck had left the roadway and struck a driveway approach. The truck went airborne and landed in the trees. The driver of the truck was identified as Scott Laverne Krey, 48, of St. Augusta. Krey advised he had fallen asleep and went off the roadway. Krey was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Ambulance for his injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

Breast Cancer Awareness Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer diagnosed in women across every racial and ethnic group in Minnesota. Breast cancer is a complex group of diseases. Most commonly, breast cancers begin in ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) or lobules (glands that make milk). Breast cancer can occur in men but it is rare, accounting for only 0.2% of cancer in men. By contrast, breast cancer accounts for over 30% of cancers diagnosed.

There are about 4,500 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed among women each year in Minnesota. In 2019, 650 Minnesota women died from breast cancer.

Screening Guidelines The goal of screening for breast cancer is to detect the disease before symptoms develop and treat it early, when cancers respond better to treatment. Screening guideline recommendations depend on age, family history and individual risk.

• Women should talk with their health care providers about breast cancer screening tests and when to have them.

• Women who do not have health insurance, or have insurance that does not fully cover breast cancer screening costs, may be eligible to receive free screening in Minnesota through MDH’s Sage Program.
