Achievement takes more than a dream -By Harvey Mackay A scrawny old man wanted to get a job at a nearby lumberjack camp so he approached the boss who politely tried to talk him out of the idea, thinking the old man wouldn’t be able to fell a tree, much less keep up with the daily quotas.

“Give me a few minutes of your time, and I’ll show you what I can do,” suggested the man.

When the two arrived at a grove of trees needing to be cleared, the scrawny old persistent man picked up an ax and proceeded to chop down a huge tree in record time.

“That’s incredible,” the boss said.

“Where did you learn to fell trees like that?”

“Well,” said the old man, “you’ve heard of the Sahara Forest?”

Hesitantly the boss replied, “Don’t you mean the Sahara Desert?”

The old man smiled and said, “Sure, that’s what it’s called now.”

“Achievers are producers,” writes Glenn Van Ekeren. “They understand the world will not recognize them for what they could have done, should have done or would have done. Recognition is experience by proving what you can do by doing it.”

Achievement is one of the desires that drives us. Why do you think we have various awards like Grammys, Emmys, Oscars, Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, not to mention numerous halls of fame? “Who’s Who in America” grows larger with every edition because people feel the need to be recognized.

“The number of new products available and the new inventions which make life easier from generation to generation all testify to mankind’s thirst for more achievement,” wrote authors Leonard and Thelma Spinrad. “No matter what kind of society or political system a country may have, it seeks to provide recognition for what it regards as achievement.”

Outstanding efforts, great courage,

heroic deeds, superior commitment and innovative accomplishments all are spectacular achievements that deserve acknowledgement.

But recognition shouldn’t be the primary motivation for achievement.

I can tell you from personal experience that achieving a goal or completing a major business or civic project is a reward in itself. Yes, my ego appreciates the kudos, but it doesn’t make the achievement any sweeter. I just want to do the best and most complete job I can do.

Finding the motivation to achieve is sometimes a challenge. You know what you can achieve; it’s the getting started part that inhibits results. When you feel stuck, you can pull yourself up with an attitude adjustment. The Success magazine website offers some ideas how to make the change.

• Rely on yourself first. You’ll have to ask others for advice, assistance, and support, but remember that in the end, your success is your responsibility alone.

• Have a plan. Don’t go off in all directions at once. Work out a solid, detailed plan for getting from your starting point to the result you want.

• Focus on commitment. Are you really committed to your goal? If not, you won’t be motivated to pursue it.

• Concentrate on gaining knowledge.

Don’t expect instant results. Instead, work on accumulating the knowledge you need to get to where you want to go.

• Have some fun. Don’t make the work all drudgery. Set a goal you’ll enjoy working toward, and look for opportunities to have fun along the way.

• Spark your imagination. Be open to anything, no matter how wild it seems at first. Generate ideas through brainstorming with others, exploring the world around you, and seeking opportunities to learn new things.

• Challenge yourself. Don’t wait for the perfect moment to take action. Take chances, get out of your comfort zone, and be realistic about your mistakes and the causes of your failures.

We all have the potential to be great achievers. It may not come with a trophy or a job title, but achievement is measured on many fronts. Don’t just dream about

achieving something – stay awake and do it!

Gretchen Alexander refused to allow her blindness to limit her life experiences.

She mastered archery, golf, softball, sailing and water skiing as well as a number of other activities her sighted friends had yet to learn.

Speaking to a group of high school students about her achievements, one student asked if there was anything she wouldn’t try. “I’ve decided not to skydive,” she answered. “It would scare the heck out of my dog.”

Mackay’s Moral: Getting something done is an accomplishment; getting something done right is an achievement.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Worry, Worry,Worry

Today, while having some phone conversations with senior citizens, I was made aware of how many individuals that are trying to do the “right thing” by staying in their homes to avoid Covid-19 are becoming e x t r e m e l y paranoid. When in lock-down, as with virtually all senior citizens, the foremost thing on their minds are their health issues.

They had been visiting their physicians on a regular basis, but now they find themselves waiting for months to get to see their doctor. This extends the weeks of worry about their ailments. When they talk to their friends on the phone, they always hear about someone that had symptoms similar to their symptoms and that person either spent a long time in the hospital or died. After all, a story needs to be shocking so that it can qualify to be passed on.

They turn on the TV or radio to the stations they traditionally followed and what do they hear? Covid-19! Covid-19!

Oh my it’s spreading at an alarming pace.

That takes up ½ of the newscast, followed by attacks on our government or the threat of global warming. You are totally at risk if you even sit in the deer stand without a mask. The problem is that if something doesn’t fit into the stations programming ideas, it will simply not be reported.

Some people have gone to a testing location and have waited up to 2 weeks to get the results. This will cause stress if your foremost concern are your health issues. In other cases these tests have shown a positive result and after taking another test, the next test is negative. Now it’s common to worry about which test was correct.

Another stress factor involves wanting to call your local health provider and be told that their call is very important and that someone will talk to you soon. The longest wait reported to me is 2 hours and 10 minutes. Part of this problem is that some organizations require the call to be sent to the organization’s headquarters, when your problem concerns local needs and solutions.

Medical employees are becoming fewer. First the organizations laid the health workers off, this reduced the payroll.

However, now when Covid-19 is traveling through the area, the existing health care workers are getting Covid-19 or a member of their family has been exposed, the result is that there is no one to cover the position.

This is becoming a serious problem and causes worry.

Other senior citizens are being told that either they must change their medicare insurance before 01-01-2021, or they will need to get a different doctor. This is what I hear from senior citizens on virtually a daily basis. That statement will cause worry and stress. That indication has been sent in the mail to some patients by the health care network. If a physician treats individuals with medicare and refuses to treat a medicare patient because of their insurance, it would be something that needs to be reported to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who will respond to the problem.

This will cause Stress and Worry on the part of the Physician. Better them than us.

Remember, worry about things you can change. You can’t stop Covid-19, wild fires on the west coast, global warming, hurricanes or becoming more mature. It’s best to worry about things you can fix or change. There is a place to send your concerns and He will take the worry from you.

ent. Covid-19 has hit us all in one way or another and because of this, Kinzie wasn’t sure they would be able to have the success they had the years prior. She had really been thinking about canceling the toy drive this year due to COVID. That quickly changed when past participants and donors began reaching out wondering her plans. She found out that due to COVID the need would be greater than ever before and it was at that moment she decided that this virus has already taken away so much from everyone, kids especially, that she was not going to let it stop her mission!

So they went right to work! Knowing they would need to work harder than ever, they were up to this challenge.

Kinzie has always considered herself very fortunate to have all the things she has and she just could not imagine kids out there not getting even one present at Christmas time. Therefore, in starting this toy drive she would try to put as many smiles on kids’ faces that she possibly could. This toy drive not only changed Kinzie, but also helped her family, friends, neighbors, and strangers focus on the true meaning of Christmas. This year more than ever, she is driven to do just that. By Brittany Johnson Kinzie Johnson, the daughter of Ryan and Brittany Johnson, formerly of Swanville, started this toy drive in 2018 when she was just 9 years old. Ever since she began to walk, she would walk the aisles of toy stores looking for the perfect toy to donate to a child at Christmas. When she was really young she didn’t quite understand why she would get to pick a toy & then have to give it away.

After time, she began to understand but always asked questions like; “Who gets them?”

“Where to they go?” “Why do we give to people we don’t know?” We like to think that even at a young age Kinzie was already planning something special.

These holiday shopping trips soon became a holiday tradition for her family. When Kinzie was 9 years old, riding in the car with her mom and brothers looking for a place to drop off their toys, it occurred to her … Why didn’t she just start her own toy drive? So, she did just that. She came up with the name, made a logo with the help of her mom, put together some boxes, reached out to friends/ family for help and boy, did it take off!

Her first toy drive was a great success!

With the help of family, friends, strangers, and neighbors she collected nearly 500 toys, in which she was able to give multiple toys to over 200 children in the Central Minnesota area. Year two, blew that out of the water with approximately 8,000 toys collected, helping many organizations and families in need throughout Central MN (Swanville, Little Falls, Sartell, Sauk Rapids & St. Cloud Area).

The support received in 2019 was unbelievable.

For September, the Volleyball Athlete of the Month is Mackenzie Morris, and the Football Athlete of the Month is Cooper Thieschafer. For October, the Volleyball Athlete of the Month is Sydney VanRisseghem, and the Football Athlete of the Month is Haden Chuba.

Coaches’ Comments: “I have had the pleasure of coaching Mackenzie Morris the last three years. It has been an absolute treat watching her learn and grow on and off the court. The one thing that has remained constant is her exemplary attitude, and modeling of what a true team player is. She has outstanding focus, drive, and the natural ability to read a volleyball court. Her athletic ability shows strongly as the libero of the volleyball team. She is one of three captains this year and is more than deserving of the recognition of Athlete of the Month.

Mackenzie is an outstanding athlete, but an incredibly intelligent young lady and I am so glad to be a part of her athletic high school experience.

Sydney is one of two senior captains on the volleyball team this season. Her exceptional leadership skills have been a vital piece of this year’s team. Not only is she a leader but she is the most supportive team player we have. She is always there to give positive feedback to the other girls or keep them going with encouraging words when needed. She has been a great girl to watch play, always striving to give nothing but her best on the court as well as off. I appreciate

her positivity, and will miss her next year but know she has a very bright future ahead of her. She is a hard worker and a smart young lady. I consider myself lucky to have such a well-rounded athlete on our team, and wish her nothing but the best for what lies ahead.”

- Coach Tressa Geschwill “Cooper Thieschafer is the USA Patriot September Athlete of the Month. Cooper is a junior this year for the Patriots. Cooper is a two year starter in the offensive line, and also starts this year on the defensive line. Cooper has been the “glue” that holds the line together and makes sure everyone knows what they are doing. The most impressive thing about Cooper’s success, is that last year he had knee surgery that laid him up from November until this past summer. Congratulations Cooper!

The USA Patriot football team is pleased to announce Haden Chuba as the October Athlete of the Month. Haden is a senior wide receiver and free safety for the Patriots. Haden has caught 17 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown, while compiling 22 tackles and one interception on defense.

Haden played a key role in the week 3 victory over BBE. Haden was also voted as a captain this year, which shows his leadership on the team. Congratulations to Haden Chuba, October Athlete of the Month!”

Dolores R. Hiltner

Dolores R. Hiltner, age 87 of Melrose, died peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

A public visitation was held Sunday, November 22 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Dolores Rose Stadtherr was born December 31, 1932 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Christine (Hinnenkamp) Stadtherr. On October 12, 1954 she was united in marriage to Richard Hiltner at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Dolores worked as a secretary for Munson Feed Company but primarily stayed at home to take care of her family.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Catholic United Financial, Melrose Hospital Auxiliary, the Dizzy Lizzy’s,

Thomas “Tom” Ley

Thomas ‘Tom’ Ley, age 53 of Fridley, formerly of Melrose passed away on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020 after battling an aggressive form of cancer at the J. A. Wedum Hospice facility in Brooklyn Park, MN. T h o m a s Richard Ley was born on October 1, 1967 in Sauk Centre, MN to Herbert and Dorothy (Feldewerd) Ley. He went to Holy Family School for four years and then moved with his family to New Munich and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School for four years and then attended Melrose High School. As a teenager he had a job cleaning at the Jenny-O factory after school. Always a hard worker, another of Tom’s jobs was loading poultry for Golden Plump in Cold Spring and as a second job, he also loaded trucks for Speedy Delivery of St. Cloud. When he moved to the Cities, Tom was hired by R.R. Donnelly Printing of Maple Grove, and he worked there in the

Monday, November 30, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Harold B. Och, age 81, who passed away Monday at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. Fr. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. will officiate and burial will be at Annunciation Cemetery in Mayhew Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Monday at the church.

Harold was born July 29, 1939 in Elrosa to Joseph & Anna (Krantz) Och. He grew up in Spring Hill and moved to Sauk Rapids in 1963. Harold served our country in the National Guard. He married Rosemarie Hoppe on July 3, 1963 and she passed away on January 4, 1997.

Harold married Katherine Counter in July 2006.

Dolores was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Richard Hiltner on October 25, 2020; parents; son-in-law, Dick Zwieg; and brother-in-law, Sylvester Doege.

Honorary bearers were Dolores’ five great-grandchildren, six step grandchildren, 13 step great-grandchildren, and three step greatgreat-grandchildren.

He was a dependable and loyal worker throughout his life. When he finally took time to pursue his own interests, Tom would head down the road on his motorcycle with his best friend, Brandon Bialke. He loved to ride and explore the beautiful countryside around Minnesota. Tom had a big heart and was a kind person. He helped out his landlord with her granddaughters and they even found time to care for stray cats and dogs and eventually get them to shelters. Tom liked to be with his work-mates and often arrived at work early in order to have time outside for a chat.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Ley of Melrose; two brothers, Kenneth (Cheryl) Ley of Lake Henry and Vernon Ley of Melrose; two nieces and two nephews, two great nieces and three great nephews and two on the way; and his dear friends, Brandon & Rose Bialke, Myabella and Taveyanna Bialke, all of Minneapolis.

Preceding him in death are his father, Herbert and his grandparents.

He worked as a Mill Operator for Frigidaire for 33 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon and was a Union Steward for Frigidaire. Harold enjoyed fixing cars (he was a self -taught mechanic), hunting, and classic country music. He was a hardworker with a great work ethic, strong-willed, frugal, and passionate about family. Harold loved dogs and cats, especially his amigo Archie. He was a simple man who was simply laid to rest.

Harold is survived by his wife, Katherine of Avon; daughters and son, Jacqueline (Anthony) Konz of Pearl Lake, Deborah Och (Michael Wagner) of St. Cloud, and Steve (Jackie) Och of Long Prairie; sisters and brother, Arlene (David) Mead of Rice, Mary (Irv) Stemm of Maple Lake, Dolores Gysberg of New Munich, Joe Och of Richmond, Viola Beehler of Royalton, Susan (Gordy) Pusc of Emily, and Karen (Larry) Stern of Paynesville; and grandchildren, Melissa, Stephanie, and Tyler Konz, MacKenzie and Megan Och. Maria Kristina Seelig Hoppe Dorothy E. Wiechman Maria Kristina Seelig Hoppe, age 73 of Melrose, was called home from Covid 19 on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held with interment in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Maria Kristina Seelig was born December 27, 1946 in Berchem, Belgium to George and Betty (Hellemans) Seelig. Maria came to the United States at age ten because her brother was ill. Her aunt lived in St. Paul which is where the family settled. While attending a Catholic girl school, Maria was held back a year because of her not speaking the English language. After graduation, she took a number of computer classes.

On September 2, 1989 she was united in marriage to Virgil Hoppe at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord in St. Paul, Minnesota, after meeting Virgil at a German Club. After marriage the couple lived in St. Paul until moving to Melrose in 1999.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose where she sang in the church funeral choir. Maria enjoyed knitting and crocheting, sewing, working on the Pfaff machine, reading, cooking, baking and canning.

Survivors include her loving husband of 31 years, Virgil Hoppe; step children, Janet (Allen) Conway, Theresa (Robert) Casey, Cindy (Otto) Schulze, and Mark (Shelley) Hoppe, 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sharon Seelig; niece, Crystal (Mike) Zeilbeck; nephews, Michael (Rachael) Seelig and Steven (Laura) Seelig; seven great-nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Roland “Raleigh” Seelig.

Dorothy E. Wiechmann, age 82 of St. Rosa, died Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held with interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in St. Rosa.

D o r o t h y Eleanor Dobmeier was born January 10, 1938 in Albany, Minnesota to Walter and Florina (Brixius) Dobmeier. On May 10, 1960 she was united in marriage to Cyril Wiechmann at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. The couple resided in Melrose for the first five years of their marriage and then farmed near St. Rosa.

She moved to Melrose in 1992 after the death of her husband, Cyril. Dorothy resided at the Tree of Life in New Munich for nine months before moving to Sterling Park in Waite Park where she had been for six weeks.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa, the Christian Mothers, and the Young at Hearts Club in Freeport. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, embroidery, going to the casino, playing BINGO, dancing, and watching the Minnesota Twins and soap operas.

Survivors include her children, Jim (Cathy) Wiechmann of St. Rosa, Sandy (Tom) Fischbach of Melrose, Jerry (Rosie) Wiechmann of Melrose, Brian (Kristi) Wiechmann of St. Rosa, Joe (Cindy) Wiechmann of St. Rosa, and Sharon (Mike) Zierden of Melrose; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Kathy) Dobmeier of St. Rosa; sister, Marge (Joe) Roelike of Melrose; and sister-in-law, Bridget Dobmeier of Blackduck.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Wiechmann on March 17, 1992; parents; and brothers, Roger Dobmeier and Marvin Dobmeier.

Roberta J. “Bobbie” Anderson, age 71 of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly from cardiac arrest on Friday, November 20, 2020, at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Visitation was held Tuesday, November 24, at Faith Baptist Church in Sauk Centre, with the funeral service at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 25. Pastor Ron Hemsworth and Pastor Joe DiVietro will officiate.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. Friday, November 27, at Spring Park Cemetery in Sandstone, Minnesota.

Roberta Jean Ploeger was born May 26, 1949, in Pine City, Minnesota, to Robert and Darlean (Klatt) Ploeger. Bobbie was a 1967 graduate of Sandstone High School and attended Bethel College in St. Paul for a short time. She was united in marriage to Dave Anderson on April 12, 1969, in Sandstone. In 1970, they moved to Melrose when Dave began his teaching career. From 1971 to 1973, they lived in Augusta, Georgia, while Dave served in the US Army. In 1973, they moved back to Melrose when Dave resumed his teaching career and where they made their permanent home.

Bobbie worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Larry Tavis for 17 years. Following his retirement, she worked at Stearns Electric Association in data entry until her retirement in 2011.

Bobbie was a member of Faith Baptist Church for 50 years. During this time she played piano, sang, taught Sunday School, provided meals for AWANA, and had a phone ministry with shut-ins.

Stephen A. Schirmers

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, private Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 25th, for Stephen Schirmers age 99, of Avon who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 of natural causes at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud. The Rev. Greg Miller, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Mass will be live streamed at 11:00 AM via YouTube: https://www.youtube. com/c/ChurchofStBenedicthohcatholic Stephen was born October 5, 1921 in Avon Township to James & Walburga (Preusser) Schirmers. He grew up in Avon and attended a one room school house that was on the end of the road from the family farm. He farmed at home until being drafted into the Army, serving his country during WWII from August 1942-October 1945.

He was wounded in action during the Battle of the Bulge, captured in Belgium in December 1944 and taken as a prisoner of war in a German prison camp.

He was liberated in April of 1945 and received the Purple Heart and the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with Five Battle Star Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He married Marie Raab on May 24, 1950 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon, where he was an active member of the church.

He worked for an implement shop before he owned and operated the Avon Blacksmith Shop from 1951 until 1975. He then worked in Building Maintenance at the St. Cloud Minnesota Department of Transportation from Nov. 1971 through retirement in June 1985. He was a member of Avon American Legion Post 0538 for 73 continuous years, a lifetime member of the St. Cloud East Side VFW Post #4847, and a member of the Central Minnesota American ExPOW’s group.

Steve’s favorite pastime was fishing especially with his children and grandchildren. He also loved nature and spending time in the woods. Steve and Marie enjoyed gardening and many years at their “cabin in the pines” in Pine River spending time with family and friends. He was a man of deep faith and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He also liked to read, especially the daily newspaper. His family cherished hearing stories of his childhood memories as well as his many life experiences. He was a kind, gentle, humble, and warmhearted soul and had a smile that would melt your heart. He was independent and liked to do things for himself even until the end of his life. His family liked to call him “the Energizer Bunny.” His family has been blessed to have had him all these years.

Survivors include his children, Ann (Art) Chaika of St. Cloud; Lois (Daniel) Scudder of St. Louis Park; Mark (Brenda) Schirmers of Avon; 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Marie, daughter, Kathy Lemke, parents, siblings, Teresa Schadeg, Gust, Joe, Brother Al Schirmers, MSC, Bill, Leo, Clare, Sister Cyrene Schirmers, OSF, one infant brother and one infant sister.

David M. Bias

Private services will be held at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig’s parish cemetery in Holdingford for David Bias, age 78, of Albany. David died at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care on Sunday, November 22, 2020.

David was born on March 16, 1942. He grew up in Holdingford and entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1964 to 1966. He worked at Kraft Foods in Melrose from over 30 years. He was a member of All Saints, St Hedwig Catholic Church.

David is survived by his children, Stephanie (Craig) Schlichting, Ham Lake; Gretchen (J) Pibal, Columbia Heights; and Keith (Andria) Bias, St. Paul. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Gail Bias, Waite Park and three grandchildren, Logan, Sydney and Griffin, Schlichting; and his sisters, Delores (Ron) Czajkowski, Avon and Diane (Darrell) Mosel, Gaylord.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Dean Rabideau, 73, of Avon who died Sunday at Serenity Village of Avon. The Rev. Gregory Miller, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. There will be no visitation prior to mass.

Dean was born February 18, 1947 in Kankakee, IL to Elden & Marjorie (Petit) Rabideau. He married Pauline Riley on August 23, 1969 at St. Martin of Tours Cathedral in Kankakee, IL. Dean worked as a general manager at JC Penney’s for 25 years before his retirement.

He was an active member of the Avon Lion’s Club and devoted member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Dean enjoyed fishing, golfing, deer hunting, calling bingo at church fundraisers and watching football. He was a happy, laid back person who loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. His positivity and smile will be dearly missed by all.

Roger Katterhagen

Services were held Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie for Roger Katterhagen, age 80, of Long Prairie who passed away November 18, 2020.

Roger was born April 5, 1940 on the family farm in Ward Township to Edmund and Molly (Drajna) Katterhagen. He attended country school through the 8th grade and worked on the farm until he joined the Army National Guard. Roger married Patricia Skeesick November 9, 1959 in Motley, they lived in Minneapolis for several years where Roger delivered milk. Roger and Pat moved back in 1965 when they purchased a farm in Hartford Township and for a few years, Roger also worked at Hart’s Press. Roger retired in 2005 but he liked to stay busy so he would lend a hand where it was needed. He liked to play cards, make trips to the casino, go fishing and to travel. Roger was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Eleanor M a r i e We n t l a n d , age 89 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 25 at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Eleanor died Friday, November 20, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Wednesday at the church in Holdingford.

Eleanor was born November 12, 1931 in Bowlus to Nicholas and Alice (Gordon) Binsfeld. She married Louis “Louie” Wentland on June 17, 1952 in St. Stanislaus

Koska Catholic Church in Bowlus. The couple settled on their farm near Holdingford where Louie farmed and Eleanor raised the couple’s children. She enjoyed baking, cooking, cards, gardening, golf cart riding and listening to country music. She was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwigs and the St. Hedwigs Christian mothers.

She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and several ½ brothers and sisters.

Customer Service Representative/Scheduler Owned by 13 rural electrical cooperatives, Heartland Security installs and services alarm systems and cameras in homes and businesses in central, western, and southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. We are seeking the right candidate to serve as a customer service representative/scheduler in our Melrose, MN office.

This is a full-time position with benefits. Prior alarm experience or technical experience is preferred.

Responsibilities: • Answer phones and resolve customer concerns • Provide the highest quality of customer service via phone • Work with other departments to schedule installation/service appointments with customers in a timely manner and maintain a logical flow of technician’s route. Utilize Sedona software to select appropriate technician and get appropriate documentation to technician. Ensure that proper parts and equipment are available for technicians.

• Review daily reports and notify customers of trouble conditions on alarm system • Troubleshoot security system issues with customers on the phone • Assist with inventory, closing and billing jobs and service tickets.

The trick is in how you handle them, and come to a compromise you each feel is fair, smart, and affordable.

One of the keys is to start talking before you start shopping. Being on the same page—and creating a plan and sticking to it—are great ways to bring peace and togetherness into the picture.

Honestly, Christmas spending can be part of your monthly cash flow plan the whole year. Get the picture? I’m talking about living on a written, monthly budget. You know Christmas is December 25th every, single, year, so why not set aside a little each month leading up to the holidays?

If you haven’t planned ahead, now is a great time to become a unified team.

priorities, but devise a game plan moving forward so that this doesn’t happen again next year. Together, figure all your regular monthly income and expenses into a budget. If you’ve saved anything at all for Christmas, include that, as well. We’ve all got necessities, so take off those first. Then, make a general list of everything you’d like to spend money on for Christmas—I’m talking about the things we often overlook like food, cards, party expenses, and decorations. Now, make a gift list. Write a dollar amount beside each name or expense on your lists, and if the grand total is the same as—or less than—your Christmas budget total, you’re ready to roll!

If you can’t agree, or the numbers don’t work, run through things again. This doesn’t mean to repeat your positions until you get what you want. It means both of you acting like mature, responsible adults, finding some middle ground, and making sacrifices. If you really want to show your commitment, you and your spouse can sign your new budget. Signing your name is a simple, psychological signal that means you’re committed to your agreement.

Then, post it somewhere you’ll both see it regularly.

Give it a try, Kellie. It just might help reinforce your commitment to the budget— and each other—when the shopping frenzy sets in!

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2003 Chevy Tahoe with 80k miles. I have had the truck since new and since about 40k miles it has had a rattle when cold. The noise starts right when I fire it up and continues for about ten minutes if the outside temperature is 70 or above. If the temperature is below 70 the noise is louder, and it takes more time for it to go away. The colder it is, the longer the noise. I have had it to a few shops over the past few years and none of them can give me a definite answer and only tell me “it should be ok” and so far for 40K miles it has been this way. Do you have a better idea of what is going on and if it is serious?

-Scott in Lake Park, Iowa Scott, it sounds like you may have what is called, piston slap. This noise comes from pistons that are slightly smaller than their bores and when cold they make a knocking sound as the piston rocks back and forth in the bore. As the piston metal warms up, the slack is taken up and the noise goes away. Many of these engines in your year range had this issue and we have seen many last for well over 100k miles once the noise starts. The only way to cure it would be a rebuild. Check the exhaust for leaks that could be similar.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My question is about my newly acquired Chevy Cruze and what octane fuel to run in it. The manual says 87 octane fuel, but I hear on both your show and others on the internet that it could perform much better if I use higher octane fuel. I am open to changing the fuel I accustomed to running in the car but using premium is more than a dollar higher per gallon and I purchased the car to save on fuel costs. Can I use ethanol in the car with a higher octane? A local station carries 91 octane ethanol here. Some of my friends say ethanol will ruin my car but Upsala, MN

-Herbert in Bottineau, North Dakota You are correct, these engines do tend to run much better when using a higher-octane fuel. We have had some of our own customers report much better fuel economy and performance when using 90 or better.

These engines may say 87 in the manual and that’s the minimum recommended but when they get higher octane, they can take advantage of a higher spark and fuel curve in the computer and be more efficient. Ethanol fuel would also be a good choice for higher octane and better economy. We have never seen any damage caused by it in our own shop of over thirty years when used properly.
