Life lessons from Grandma Ruth -By Harvey Mackay D u r i n g this season of Thanksgiving, I’m going to take a detour from business advice and focus instead on gratitude. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to get to know a remarkable woman whose life lessons are an example for all.

I recently attended service at Temple Israel in Minneapolis when a friend pointed out an elderly woman and said I should meet her. I was astounded to learn she was 109-years-old.

I often seek out older people to ask them their secrets to living and how they’ve persevered. So I visited Ruth Knelman at her apartment and was amazed to learn she lives alone and does all her own cooking.

Ruth is chockful of life lessons. She is affectionately called Grandma Ruth by all the children she reads to at Temple Israel. Every Friday for the last 30 years, she reads to seven classes of youngsters, ages 18 months to pre-kindergarten.

She is a strong believer in reading.

She always read to her son and her

grateful for all her friends, and she tries to never take advantage of them.

“Friends have to be tolerant and patient,” she said. “Your best friend can hurt your feelings. You never forget this, but you forgive. If you took offense at things, you wouldn’t have any friends.

No one is perfect.”

Ruth added: “Life can’t be all good.

You have to have ups and downs. You always have more ups than downs.”

Grandma Ruth has volunteered for 30-plus years at Jefferson Community School and many other organizations over her lifetime. Why volunteer so much?

She said she always wanted to do good.

“You have to do something good for your community.”

People who volunteer and help others have a healthier outlook on life.

They are more inclined to be go-getters and consistently report being happier.

Ruth is the poster child for happy.

Through volunteering she met many great friends, so she understands the importance of networking and friendship. She is so thankful and

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Squatters In the last half of the 1800’s, people began to move west and as a result some of them came to Minnesota. Land ownership was not as prevalent as it is today.

The homestead act had been created and some of the land was occupied by homesteaders, who had or were in the process of improving their property so that they would be able to claim title to it.

About the time of President Lincoln, there was an agreement between the Federal Government and the railroads, which gave the railroads large areas of land to encourage them to create service, which would expand the settlement and development of the wilderness in Minnesota.

About the northern half of Minnesota was covered with trees. The trees had a potential economic benefit from the wood products, but were a block to the creation of agricultural production. An agrarian society was the ultimate goal of the railroads, so that the farm goods and population would take advantage of the railroad to move themselves and their production. Land covered by forests had much less value than land able to

immediately grow crops. Ownership of the land was good for the railroads, but their ultimate goal was to sell the land at the highest price possible.

After the homesteaders and during the time of the railroad ownership of the land, a group of pioneers began to appear. These people would move onto a plot of land, build a shack and probably a small barn. They didn’t own the land, but by living there, they made improvements to the property. They are commonly referred to as squatters. They lived on the land until they decided to move to another location or were forced to move off the land when it was sold.

The squatters were an economic advantage for the railroads. Yes, they were living on the land for free and the railroad was not kicking them off the property. The longer they squatted on the land, the more likely they would improve the dwelling and of course, they had to have a barn for the horses.

To feed themselves and their families, they usually would increase the size of the small garden and field, thereby increasing the open farm land. Prior to the squatter moving onto the land, it was a very low valued mess of woods, now it’s value has greatly increased, since a family can buy the property and have a habitable home, an outbuilding and a garden space to grow food. The land now was worth as much as 5 times more than unimproved forested land.

She thinks a big problem today for people is stress. She sees it every day when she watches people drive. She volunteered at a hospital for many years and remembers a man who had a nervous breakdown because he hated his job and his boss. If you aren’t happy, her advice is to find something else. Life is too short.

I asked Ruth what she would say to a college graduate: “You have to like people, be nice and be patient.” She also knows the importance of a good reputation and how one thoughtless act can destroy a lifetime of good work.

Ruth is often asked for advice to which she responded: “Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know. You can’t know everything.”

Ruth has a fantastic memory. She always has people repeat their names when she meets them because when she hears a name twice, she remembers it better.

She keeps her mind sharp by playing bridge every week. She’s been playing that card game for 94 years, starting at age 15. Ruth also plays gin rummy, and I learned there is a little money involved too.

I couldn’t resist asking about her secret to living this long. She said, “I’ve done everything wrong.” She stays up late at night and gets up early.

She eats late in the day. When she wakes up in the middle of the night, she drinks

coffee and watches TV. She doesn’t drink water and prefers club soda. She takes only one pill.

She also is not a big fan of exercise.

She said the people who exercise regularly have to have their hips and knees replaced. Her exercise is walking.

How does Ruth want to be remembered? She is so thankful for all the people who were so kind to her: “You have to like people. You can’t get bored. I always have something to do.”

While I was visiting with Ruth, the phone rang at least five times. It was like Grand Central Station. Then as I was leaving, we were greeted by another friend that was coming to visit her.

As I got ready to leave, Ruth had one request: “Can I give you a hug? You never know when it might be your last hug.”

They didn’t have to get a building permit, water and sewer installation, electrical work, drain fields or concrete work. It was a low cost, livable dwelling keeping most of the snow, wind and rain off of the

out on the family farm. She was a farmer and homemaker all her life, while raising four children. She enjoyed every aspect of farming, especially raising baby calves, raking hay, and cultivating corn.

Darlene enjoyed snowmobiling, Polka dancing/festivals, an occasional trip to Las Vegas, cooking, baking, playing cards, and watching Wheel of Fortune.

She also enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and visiting with friends.

Survivors include her children, Bonnie (Joe) Kemper of Grey Eagle, Connie (Gene) Waldvogel of Grey Eagle, Donnie Bense of Grey Eagle, and Pam (Mark) Dziengel of Grey Eagle; four grandchildren, Kelly Burg, Bob Waldvogel, Katie Dziengel, and Nic Dziengel; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Shelby, and Justin Burg; and sister, Shirley Casey of Rochester.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Bense on January 9, 2016; parents; and sister, Diane Kleinschmidt on December 21, 1964.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

D a r l e n e Bense, age 86 and 11 days short of her 87th birthday, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at her home in Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A private family graveside service at L a k e v i e w Cemetery in Grey Eagle will be held at a later date.

Darlene Delores Kleinschmidt was born November 27, 1932 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Fred and Mable (Guse) Kleinschmidt. She was born and raised on her parent’s farm northwest of Grey Eagle. On September 19, 1950 she married Robert Bense at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Together they farmed southeast of Grey Eagle, and even after retirement continued helping

David Peter Backes, age 71 of Greenwald, Minnesota, passed away on November 14, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A community celebration of life “Bucky Night” will take place in Greenwald, Minnesota at Woody’s Bar & Grill in January. Date and time to be determined.

David was born on May 26, 1948 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Alberta Mary (Schleper) Backes and Cyril Anton Backes.

He attended St. Andrew’s Elementary School in Greenwald, MN and graduated from Melrose High School. David served in the United States Navy, after which he returned to Greenwald, where he started his many years as a carpenter.

Just like most of the boys in his family, people knew him better as “Bucky.” David was an avid fisherman, both in winter and summer, spending many hours in the dark house on Sauk Lake, in pursuit of the giant northern pike. Known for his wild red hair

As was quoted at Kraemer Lumber, where he worked for many years, “Bucky was one of a kind” Most mornings found him eating breakfast with the boys at a local café. He also enjoyed working around on his small farm just outside of Greenwald.

He was a character whose presence will be truly missed.

Survivors include his siblings, Margaret Theilman (Bob) of Avon, Gary Backes (Lila) of St. Joseph, Dennis Backes (Rebecca) of Champlin, and Paul Loxtercamp (Julie) of Bemidji, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril Backes on June 6, 1958, Alberta Backes Loxtercamp on September 29, 2003, brother Nicholas Backes on August 3, 2015, and brother-in-law Robert Theilman on May 2, 2019.

He had a deep love for God and his family.

Roger was a huge fan of local sports and the Minnesota Twins.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Hance of Northfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters, John Raeker, Wilfred Raeker, Antonette O’Rourke, Rosamond Frederick, Gerard Raeker, Harvey Raeker, Annella Sauer, and Helen Roufs.

Arthur “Art” Zapzalka A r t h u r Zapzalka, a beloved dad, grandpa, greatgrandpa and friend to many passed away Thursday, November 14 at St. Otto’s in Little Falls at the age of 90. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 22 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls and from 9:30 A.M. until the hour of the service on Friday at the church. The burial will be in the Parish Cemetery.

Arthur was born on May 27, 1929 to Albin and Florence (Waletski) Zapzalka in Swan River Township, MN. He served in the US Army for 2 years. Arthur was married to Genevieve Piekarski on April 27, 1959 in Flensburg, MN. Together they had 10 children.

Arthur worked at the West Side Creamery from 1956-1972. He was a custodian at the Little Falls Middle School from 1972 until his retirement in 1991. He continued to work part time at the school until 2009. Arthur loved woodworking, card playing, reading

Monica “Moni” Barten

Monica M. “Moni” Barten, age 94 of Spring Hill, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Parkview Place in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, November 16 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Monica Margaret Wander was born December 27, 1924 in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Michael and Theresa (Athmann) Wander. She married Alfred Barten on September 20, 1948 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill.

Together they raised 11 children, and she was blessed with 32 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Moni was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Faith was very important to her and she taught religion classes for 40 years. Moni was also a member of the Christian Mothers and Catholic United Financial. She volunteered for hospice for over 30 years. Moni was an

He loved being with people, had an infectious smile and had wonderful “long” conversations with many. Arthur was devoted to his family and loved to share how proud he was of each of them.

From time to time John also preached when the pastor was away. John farmed near Swanville and also worked as a salesman for Standard Quality Pre-mix, a feed company out of Omaha, NE. Agriculture was in his blood. He enthusiastically researched and was always willing to try new and improved farming methods. John genuinely enjoyed people. Sales calls could become long visits.

He was always willing to help others. His sense of humor and one-liners kept people smiling. Hunting everything from birds to elk, and fishing, especially spearfishing, were favorite pastimes for him. Though moving from the farm was difficult, when health concerns made it necessary, John was grateful for the opportunity to live at the Meadow Place Assisted Living in Long Prairie where he received excellent care.

John is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Dawn (Mike) Karner of Woodland CA; sons, Jim of Browerville, Mark (Angie) of Alexandria and Paul (Stacey) of Long Prairie; sisters, Delores Steffen of Kandihoyi and Judy Taylor of Sacred Heart; fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cindy Dunn; sister, Alice Striech; and brothers, Raymond, David and Rev. Leroy Urman.

F u n e r a l Services were held Monday, November 18, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, MN for John Urman, Jr. who passed away Tuesday at his home in Long Prairie. The Rev. Noah Wehrspann officiated and burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

John was born March 15, 1932 in Bruce Township to John Sr. and Sadie (Zelgert) Urman. He graduated from Swanville High School. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1954 and continued serving in the Navy Reserve until 1960. He married Donna Souhrada on June 8, 1957 at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville.

John’s faith was evident by how he lived his life and served his church. Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he was baptized, confirmed and married is also where he raised his family. For years he also served as a trustee and taught Junior Bible Classes.

Kennedy Allan, daughter of Mike and Mandie Allan, spoke at the Upsala American Legion Post #350 Veterans Dinner on November 11. She shared her experiences of her time as a citizen at MN Girls State. Girls State is put on by the American Legion Auxiliary. The week long program is all about the citizens learning how our government runs at the state, county and city levels. Around 340 citizens were in attendance doing activities such as: writing bills, running for offices, listening to speakers and attending events at our state capital.

Without knowing what favor the student wanted, it was obvious that I had a certain amount of power over him and could do something for him that he could not do for himself. He literally was at my mercy.

Moses concluded Psalm 90 with a gracious reminder of God’s power and our need to work for His favor. “May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us,” he wrote. And then he described For All Your Cabinet Needs...

how we could know that God’s favor was on our work: God Himself would establish the work of our hands. “Establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands.” When Moses added the “for us” he underlined the fact that God Himself is the one who established our work, not us. Whatever we do is temporary. Whatever God does through us is eternal.

How, then, can we work with God to establish works that are eternal? Paul gives us a clear answer: “Stand firm. Let nothing disturb you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

But just what is “the work of the Lord?” we ask.

Jesus answered that: “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart - and love your neighbor as yourself.” And “who is my neighbor” someone asked? His answer: “Anyone who has a spiritual, emotional or physical need.”

It is difficult to go from one place to another without seeing someone who has some need. Our work? Meet it.

Dear Motor Medics, I have been looking at trucks to be used as both primary transportation and for pulling a camper in the summer. I have a half ton gas powered truck now that is used for about 20,000 miles per year but after upgrading my camper to a larger size this past summer I don’t feel it is safe to use as a pull truck any longer. I am a Ford guy and want to go with a diesel truck in a 3/4 or 1-ton model 4x4 but hear that most of the trucks in my price range are equipped with a 6.0 engine and that they have some inherent problems. What kind of things go wrong with the engine and what can be done to fix them? I may be willing to buy one and -Doug in Kalamazoo, Michigan Dear Doug, It is smart of you to think safety.

You should never pull with a truck that is too small for the job or safety will be compromised. The issues we see with the 6.0 are usually the egr cooler and the engine oil cooler. There are some really strong aftermarket parts available to update the engine and once done we have seen greatly improved strength and no repeat failures so far. There are some great deals to be had on the 6.0 and if you find one budget for the upgrades to help prevent major future breakdowns.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My car is dying. I have been told that it is unsafe to drive due to rust but on the outside, it looks fine. I have a 2000 Grand Prix and they have shown me major rust in the rocker panel area that is covered up by the plastic ground effects. The rocker is actually gone but it doesn’t seem to be supporting anything. I want to drive the car for a

few more years but they tell me the rust has severely compromised the structural integrity and the main support structure is weakening so it will be very unsafe in a collision. Are there any repairs that I can make to help get it by for a couple years until I’m ready for a new car?

-Martin in Lincoln, Nebraska Dear Martin, I own one of these cars and I am in your exact situation now. The rockers were a concern a few years ago and I suspect yours were too. I’m afraid our few years have passed and with structural safety compromised the safest thing for us is to replace the car. Once rust has become this bad the cost to repair it usually exceeds the economic value of the vehicle and replacement is a better choice. Daily driving may get us around but if a collision should occur our lives could be at risk, with rust there really is no temporary structural strengthening you can do to get by.

Grey Eagle City October 8, 2019 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 8th day of October 2019 in council chambers. Members present were Roland Ahrendt and Bill Pohlmann. Council members Thom Muellner and Brian Hollenkamp were absent.

Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests John Call, Greg Stang, Jeremy Kerzman and Tim Neibling.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Region Manager Greg Stang from People Services was in attendance to discuss their company and what they can provide to the City of Grey Eagle. People Services is a contract water/wastewater company and currently have 70 contracts in Minnesota and they can tailor their services based on individual city needs. Greg will put together some options and prices for the November meeting and stated that it was feasible to have someone in place by February 1, 2020 if that is the direction the council decided to go.

Jeremy Kerzman was in attendance to discuss some costs associated with repairing the interior of the old Village Hall.

The recommendation is to remove the upper stage wall and install a new beam, remove the false ceiling and sidewalls, remove and replace the windows in the basement, spray foam and encapsulate the top ceiling and beams, remove and replace the cement pad between the two cement pillars and paint the spray foam for a finished look.

The council discussed the water and sewer hook- up to the shed on the Neibling property.

Due to the cost, the amount of rain and the coming of the winter season, the matter will be revisited in the spring.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the purchase of computer and printer from Central Minnesota Computer Services for $1,401. The purchase of the computer and printer will be a reimbursable expense through the sewer project. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed the large number of dog complaints being received regarding dogs running loose, barking dogs, pet owners not cleaning up waste

from their pets, and the number of pets some households have.

The Clerk was instructed to send out letters to all residents/ property owners regarding the keeping of dogs within the City.

The practice wall by the tennis courts has not been removed as it has been too wet.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to hire Kerzman Construction to remove the upper portion of the stage wall in the Old Village Hall and install a beam for $4,200. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Council would like to remind residents that beginning November 1st there will be no parking on the two business blocks of Main Street/State Street between the hours of 2:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m. Also, the Council is reminding residents to refrain from parking vehicles, trailers, etc., on any city street when it is snowing so that snow removal can be taken care of more efficiently.

The council authorized the water to be shut off at the Beilke residence due to the property being vacant.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the Todd County Attorney contract as submitted. A second was made

by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the contract with Herdering Inc., for snow removal for the 20192020 season. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

There were no building permits for council consideration.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve Resolution No. 2019-10, A Resolution Accepting $100 Donation from Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hughes Jr. for Fire Department Equipment.

A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Thein Well submitted a quote to seal the old well next to the Fire Hall for $3,455.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the quote from Thein Well to seal the old well for $3,455. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

2. Chico is requesting attendance to a Minnesota Rural Water Association training session in Waite Park on October 29th regarding winterizing City water systems. The cost is $125 for this one day class.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve Chico’s attendance to the Minnesota Rural Water Association training session on October 29th for

$125. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

3. Electric Pump had to come in and repair one of the pumps at the East Lift Station.

It was found that there were rags wrapped around the pump causing it to malfunction. Residents are reminded that flushable wipes are NOT flushable and cause costly repairs to the lift station pumps.

4. A water leak was found at the Ritter residence and has been repaired.

5. During a recent Minnesota Department of Health inspection of the water plant, it was found that the fan and louvers in the chemical room were not working. Chico will work to get these items fixed as soon as possible.

6. The tractor will not shift into third or fourth gear.

7. There is a resident who has not had a working remote on their water meter for several months now, after repeated promises to get it fixed. The council instructed that a letter be sent informing them that if the remote is not functional by the specified date, then the water will be shut off as they are using the water services and not paying for them.

The Clerk provided the council with a list of eight delinquent utility bills that needs to be assessed to the property taxes. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann, to authorize the Clerk to assess delinquent utilities to Todd County to be placed the property taxes for collection. A second was made

by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the following fund transfer: $148.12 from the General Fund of which $31.12 goes to the Water Fund and $117 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall, Library and Old Village Hall utilities.

A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include the payment of the following additional items: $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union, $200.44 to First State Bank of Swanville, $1,924.57 to Minnesota Power and $37,618.24 to ServPro. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

My job is the only income we have right now, and I’m making $45,000 before taxes. Is this a silly thing to do in our situation?

-Jamie Dear Jamie, This is an important question. It’s not important because $350 is a big deal in the grand scheme of things, it’s important because you’re making a judgment call as to what you’re focusing on and what you value.

If you’re focusing on your husband finishing school, so his income goes up and you’re trying to get out of debt, that’s fine. I love it when people are willing to work their tails off to have better lives.

But if that’s your focus, and at the same time you’re trying to rationalize buying something you don’t really need, that’s a bad thing. You don’t need a new cell phone for a camera, especially if the

camera is the only reason you’re buying it. You can find decent digital cameras everywhere these days for $50 or less.

I understand the joy that goes along with having a child. I have three kids, and we were absolutely ecstatic each and every time one was born. And, of course, we wanted good photos of them all. But right now, I think you’re trying to rationalize a phone upgrade based on the emotion of a new baby. As an exercise of your value system, that’s a tendency you need to break. This is a test, Jamie. What you’re talking about here is a luxury, not a necessity.

Rationalization is one of the prime causes of overspending.

Please understand, I’m not picking on you and I don’t mean to be harsh.

We’ve all flunked this test at times. But this is an important moment where your judgment and values are concerned. It’s your call, but you really don’t need to blow $350 on a new phone right now.

Clara Donnelly

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Clara Donnelly, age 98 of St. Cloud, formerly of Holdingford, was held Wednesday, November 20 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Clara died Thursday at the Sanctuary in St. Cloud.

Clara was born August 1, 1921 in Holdingford to Frank and Elizabeth (Vos) Ebnet. She married her first love, Ervin Schmidt, on October 14, 1941. He was accidently killed on November 23, 1953.

Clara married her second husband, Alfred Klug, on June 11, 1957. He passed away on December 13, 1963. She married her third husband, Joe Donnelly on July 31, 1965. He passed away on December 30, 1995. Clara was a strong, hardworking woman who

spent her early married years on their farms.

She raised large gardens and preserved most the of food they ate. She loved playing cards, bingo, quilting, doing many crafts and cooking and baking. She was on the District 114 School Board. She was a member of the Holdingford City Council for 8 years and she was active with Helping Hands. She worked at Headly Hardware for 20 years. She loved her family and extended family and loved when they would visit her. She is a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary; the Christian Women, the Rosary Society and the Holdingford American Legion Auxiliary.

Clara is survived by children, Diane Leder, Remer; Karen Warzecka, St. Joseph; Dennis Schmidt, Swan River; her stepchildren, Karen (Ray) Knutson, Little Falls; Loren Klug, Sauk Centre; Gerry (Linda) Klug, Holdingford; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 11 great-greatgrandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Elizabeth Ebnet, her step-mother; her husbands, Ervin Schmidt; Alfred Klug and Joe Donnelly; her 12 siblings, two sonsin-law; and a grandson, Brian Warzecka.

Community Chorus Presents Annual Advent/Christmas Concert Dec. 1

By Robert Kutter The Grey Eagle Community Chorus will present its annual concert of Advent and Christmas music on Sunday, December 1 at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

“Joy to the World,” a beloved Christmas classic, turns 300 this year. Composer Isaac Watt’s interpretation of Psalm 98 invites us to sing a “new song.”

Robert Kutter conducts, and Angela Bitz accompanies the chorus. Flute, cello, violins and hand bells are also part of

the program. The singers are from Grey Eagle and the surrounding area.

Come on the first day of Advent to hear the Christmas story told through songs from Advent through Epiphany.

The chorus will sing the hauntingly beautiful I Believe, Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain, Joy to the World and other songs that usher the listener into the season.

Joel Birr

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Joel Birr, age 33 of Albany, will be 2:00 PM, Monday, November 25 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Farming. Joel died unexpectedly of heart trouble at his home on Sunday. There will be an opportunity for friends to gather from 12:00 Noon until the time of the service on Monday at the church in Albany.

Joel was born July 9, 1986 in St. Cloud to Roger and Jeanne (Dinndorf) Birr. He grew up in Avon and graduated from the Albany High School. He attended St. Cloud Technical

and Community College. Most recently, Joel worked for People’s Services in Richmond.

In the past he worked for the City of Avon in Waste Water Management and he worked for Cutters Lawn Service. He married Hannah Noska on September 7, 2018 in Albany. He enjoyed golfing, waterfowl hunting, deer hunting and fishing. Joel’s greatest joy was spending time with his friends and family.

Joel is survived by his wife, Hannah, Albany; his mother, Jeanne Birr, Avon; his brother, Scott (Liana) Birr, Avon, his maternal grandparents, Margaret Dinndorf, Albany and Don Dinndorf, St. Augusta, his mother & father-in-law, Nick and Sue Noska, Albany and his brother-in-law, Henry (Rebecca) Noska, Avon. He is also survived by his nieces, Khloey Birr (his god-child) and Kaydance Larson; and nephew, Nolan Noska.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Aaron and Erma Birr; his father, Roger Birr in 1998 and a niece, Josie Birr.

DNR advises people to stay off the ice Unseasonably cold weather means ice making has begun on many lakes across the state, but Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers advise people to stay off of the still-forming ice.

That’s because ice thickness is highly variable and subject to the whims of Mother Nature. Emergency responders already have responded to incidents where anglers have fallen through thin ice or been stranded on ice sheets that broke off from the shoreline due to heavy wind.

Anglers and others who recreate on the ice should stay on shore until there’s at least 4 inches of new, clear ice. Anytime people are on the ice, they should check its thickness every 150 feet.

“For some people, going out onto the ice as early as possible is a badge of honor, but the reality is they’re putting their lives in danger – and the lives of the people tasked with coming to their rescue should things go wrong,” said Col. Rodmen Smith, DNR Enforcement Division director. “The risk to you and others isn’t worth the reward.”

It will take another several consecutive days of below-freezing temperatures before enough solid ice has formed to support foot traffic, and even longer before all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles should be on the ice. Once the ice has had more time to form, it’s up to each individual to make sure it’s thick enough.

“Don’t take someone else’s word about the condition of the ice, and don’t assume it’s safe just because that’s what you read on social media,” Smith said. “Check for yourself, and make sure you’re prepared for the worst.”

Each year, unexpected falls through thin ice lead to serious injury or death. Wearing a life jacket is the best way to avert tragedy should you fall through the ice, since the initial shock of falling into cold water can incapacitate even strong swimmers. A good set of ice picks will help a person get out, and a cell phone, whistle or other communications device makes it more likely they will be able to call for help.

General ice safety guidelines No ice can ever be considered “safe ice,” but following these guidelines can help minimize the risk: • Always wear a life jacket or float coat on the ice (except when in a vehicle).

• Carry ice picks, rope, an ice chisel and tape measure.

• Check ice thickness at regular intervals; conditions can change quickly.

• Bring a cell phone or personal locator beacon.

• Don’t go out alone; let someone know about trip plans and expected return time.

• Before heading out, inquire about conditions and known hazards with local experts.

Swans in icy water aren’t always in trouble

The Department of Natural Resources asks Minnesotans to carefully consider the situation before reporting trumpeter swans or other waterfowl that appear to be trapped in ice or rapidly freezing water. While they may initially appear to be distressed, they most often are not.

Just like humans, animals behave differently when the seasons and temperatures change. It is important to not assume the worst when observing a wildlife situation. It is easy to mistake unusual animal behaviors for an animal in distress. Stop and closely observe before attempting to find help.

“Trumpeter swans are a classic example of this,” said Erica Hoaglund, central region nongame wildlife specialist. “People see them this time of year resting on frozen water or swimming about in small pockets of open water within ice. Observers assume they’re trapped when most of the time they’re not and move on in either a few days or a few weeks.

It usually is not the emergency it can first appear to be.”

The DNR provides these reminders to people concerned about the fate of swans or other waterfowl they see in or near water during the early parts of winter.

Often birds that seem trapped in ice or in a shrinking area of open water are fine and not trapped. When the weather is cold, animals move around less, just like people, and observers are often not used to seeing them inactive or alone.

On the rare occasion an animal is actually in distress, it is often physically impossible to reach them safely across thin ice and open, frigid water. Frequently in these situations, the bird or animal has been unable to leave the area for some underlying reason such as illness or injury and it may be impossible to rehabilitate the animal even after its rescue.

Do not risk a human life to save a wild animal.

In the case of trumpeter swans in Minnesota, the DNR Nongame Wildlife Program is happy to report that after years of hard work and restoration efforts, the trumpeter swan population in the state is now stable and large enough that natural mortality is not cause for alarm.

Animals that die outside in the winter are an important part of the food chain. Their carcasses will provide crucial winter food sources to a wide range of wildlife, including invertebrates, mice and even bald eagles.
