Edwin H. “Ed” Koenig
Edwin H. “Ed” Koenig, age 87 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 18 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. Edwin Herman Koenig was born June 7, 1935 in New Munich, Minnesota to George and Mary (Raeker) Koenig. He grew up in New Munich on a farm in Oak Township and graduated from Melrose High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army and served his country from 1955 to 1957; spending 16 months in Japan. Ed met the love of his life, Theresa Rooney, at the New Munich Ballroom and on June 13, 1961 they were united in marriage in Padua, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple resided in Sauk Centre where Ed owned and operated Depot Feeds for over 50 years. The family he created with Theresa was the most important part of Ed’s life. Together they created a large family that loved hard, worked hard and played hard. After retirement, Ed and Theresa enjoyed wintering in Florida for 16 years. He enjoyed spending summers at lake cabin with his family and friends, playing cards and Farkle, and making an occasional trip to the casino. Ed was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus, former president of the Lions Club, and former president of the Sauk Centre Chamber of Commerce. The family he leaves behind include his wife, Theresa Koenig of Sauk Centre; children, Marlene (Dale) VanHavermaet of Ward Springs, Patsy (Dale) Ahrens of Ward Springs, Cheryl Kampsen of Brooten, Shelly (Gary) Swanson of Andover, Pam (Jacob) Hauge of Sunburg, and Sara (Michael) Martin of Bayport; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ann Zierden of Melrose and Flossie (Rich) Hoppe of New Munich. Ed was welcomed to Heaven by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, numerous brothersin-law and sisters-in-law and son-in-law, Randy Kampsen. Serving as casket bearers were Lance VanHavermaet, Dustin Kampsen, Austin Kampsen, Benjamin Swanson, Zachary Swanson, and Brian Ruegemer. Pall bearers were Naomi Ruegemer and Jennifer VanHavermaet. Cross bearer was Madalyn Martin and scripture bearer was Claire Hauge. Reader was Jana Messer. Gift bearers were Kelsey Moser, Brittni Berg, and Evalyn Martin. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Joshua “Josh” Young, age 29 of Blaine, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 10, 2022 in Blaine, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with one hour visitation prior to the service. Joshua John Wayne Young was born May 11, 1993 in Ogden, Utah to John Young and Donna Craft. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones. Survivors include his mother, Donna Craft of Alexandria; sisters and brothers, Megan Young of St. Cloud, Armando Craft of Sauk Centre, Ashley Craft of Garfield, and Eric Craft of Sauk Centre; six nephews and nieces; grandmothers, Susan Craft of Sauk Centre and Jeanne Young of Idaho; and stepdad, Arthur Gutansky of Sauk Centre. Sylvester P. Welle
Sylvester P. “Sylvie” Welle, age 84 of Spring Hill, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Sylvester Peter Welle was born July 9, 1938 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Michael and Adella (Meyer) Welle. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1956. On August 26, 1961 he was united in marriage to Judy Imdieke at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Sylvie took over the family dairy farm in 1961and in 1996 switched to strictly crop farming. He also worked as a field reporter for the Stearns County USDA for ten years. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill and the church choir, St. Michael’s Men’s Society, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic United. Sylvie enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing softball and baseball, taking trips to the casino, horses, gardening, singing and dancing, and playing yard games. He enjoyed watching sporting events and was a Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. Sylvie loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Judy Welle of Spring Hill; children, Mark (Kim) Welle of Richmond, John (Shannon) Welle of Big Lake, Eric (Jen) Welle of Rogers, and Lori (Ryan) Braegelmann of Melrose; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and sister, Bernie (Dave) Sieben of Melrose; and sister-in-law, Lillian Welle of Detroit Lakes. Sylvie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ray and Walter Welle; and sisters, Leona Rolfzen, Bernice Welle, Julie Verzuh, and Angie Welle. Memorials are preferred to CentraCare Hospice or St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Donald H. Herzog
Donald H. Herzog, age 84 of St. Francis, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 15, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 20 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Donald Henry Herzog was born July 17, 1937 in St. Rosa, Minnesota to Fred and Rose (Schreier) Herzog. On September 26, 1962 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Arceneau at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Donald farmed west of St. Francis for over 35 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis, St. Francis Men’s Society, and served on the parish council and a Trustee. During his retirement, Donald enjoyed working on and restoring Massey Harris tractors and taking drives around the countryside. Survivors include his children, Fred (Alicia) Herzog of Randall, Gary Herzog of Swanville, Allen (Diane) Herzog of Freeport, Dennis Herzog of Burtrum, David (Teri) Herzog of Osakis, Shirley (Don) Winkels of Avon, Janet (Joe) Christen of Albany, and Janel (Alan) Marstein of Bowlus; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with two on the way; sisters, Monica (Cletus) Bechtold of St. Joseph and Bernadette (Bob) Ethen of St. Joseph; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Herzog on October 9, 1997; parents; and son, Duane “Whitey” Herzog on February 28, 2017. Serving as casket bearers were Fred Herzog, Gary Herzog, Allen Herzog, Dennis Herzog, David Herzog, and Shirley Winkels. Cross bearer was Janel Marstein and scripture bearer was Janet Christen. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.
Herman J. Klaphake, Jr.
Herman J. “Howdy” Klaphake, Jr., age 84 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, July 18, 2022 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A private family prayer service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist
Cemetery in Meire Grove. Herman Joseph Klaphake, Jr. was born February 14, 1938 in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herman and Anna (Middendorf) Klaphake. On May 30, 1964 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Kemper at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Howdy was born on the home farm and was able to be granted his final wish which was to die on the farm. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, Catholic United, and St. John’s Society. Howdy enjoyed farming, football, going to auctions, and his cats and dogs. He loved driving around to look at the crops and loved spending time at the dinner table to catch up on all the local gossip. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Kathy Klaphake of Sauk Centre; children, William Klaphake of Sauk Centre, Patrick Klaphake of Sauk Centre, Sue Klaphake of Meire Grove, Tom (Rachel) Klaphake of Greenwald, and Jon Klaphake of Sauk Centre; granddaughter, Hannah Klaphake; and sisters, Margaret Breitbach of Elrosa and Valeria (Steve) Kral of Osakis. Howdy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tony Klaphake and Edward Klaphake; and sisters, Leona Boeckermann and Lorraine Marthaler. Memorials are preferred to Knute Nelson Hospice. John L. Klaphake
John L. Klaphake, age 88 of Albany, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, July 18, 2022 at his home in Albany, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 25 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Parish prayers will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday evening at the church. John Lawrence Klaphake was born January 2, 1934 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to William and Lydia (Derichs) Klaphake. John worked at Progress Casting in Plymouth most of his life. John married Roselyn Poepping on October 24, 1961 in Greenwald. John and Roselyn raised four children while living most of their marriage in New Brighton. Roselyn passed away on May 22, 1994. John then married Vera Lou Gertken on November 28, 1997 in Avon. They moved to Albany and John worked part-time for Avon Elementary for eight years, retiring in 2007. John enjoyed spending time with his family as much as he could. He also loved going on trips, dancing, playing cards, and watching The Price is Right. Survivors include his wife, Vera Lou Klaphake of Albany; children, Theresa KernsDexter of Burnsville, Brian Klaphake of Blaine, Kevin (Allison) Klaphake of New Brighton, and Julie (Chris) Mazza of Dayton; stepchildren, Leroy (Joyce) Gertken of Albany, Melissa (Brian) Bueckers of Avon, Brenda (Rich) Sanoski of Albany, Brian (Linda) Gertken of Albany, and Marie (Joe) Koopmeiners of Avon; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 15 step grandchildren, and 11 step great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Dolores Rohe, Hildegard (Othmar) Rohe, Florence Jaeger, Richard (Linda) Klaphake, Gerald (Anna) Klaphake, Carol Klehr, and Robert (Grace) Klaphake; and sister-in-law, Marcy Klaphake. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Roselyn; parents; son-in-law, John Kerns; daughter-in-law, Teresa “Terri” Klaphake; grandchildren, Courtney and Hailey Klaphake; brothers, Sylvester and Leroy Klaphake; brothersin-law, Herman Rohe and Ronald Klehr; and sisters-in-law, Bernice Klaphake and Betty Klaphake.
