But his mom didn’t see it that way. She said, “Richard, you don’t have to run second to anybody!”

Petty never forgot his mother’s message, and for the next 20-plus years, he dominated stock-car racing.

Like most kids growing up, the importance of finishing first or winning was always stressed. As a competitive person, I thought that second place was the same as last. Losing was a source of shame. Everyone wants to win.

Americans have a fixation on being number one. The most valuable player, the Oscar winner, the CEO. Who dreams of being the backup quarterback or getting named the runner-up in the Miss America pageant?

How many kids grow up wanting to be vice president?

My good friend Nido Qubein says: “Winners compare their achievements with their goals and with their own potential. The rest compare themselves with others.”

There’s certainly nothing wrong with striving to be the best. That’s what makes America. Healthy competition for the number one spot brings out the best in us.

But for there to be a number one, someone must be number two. And three. And four.

There’s only one Michael Jordan, Tom Brady and Muhammad Ali. What is the best way to get to number

one? It’s competition. Competition has made me a better businessman, a better golfer and a better person. And when there isn’t another company or business to compete with, I try to outdo myself. If that sounds simple, well it is.

I always want to be at my best.

Competition makes us better and stronger.

We should not only welcome stiff competition, we should actively seek it. We’ll never realize our full potential in business or athletics unless we are challenged. Competition is healthy. It keeps us sharp. It makes us better. It improves quality.

But a problem I see all too frequently is that people are afraid of competition. Perhaps it’s because they fear losing, but I suspect a better reason is that they know they are not as prepared as the competition. They are not willing to put in the necessary hard work, training and sacrifice that is required. They think things will be easier for them than for others, possibly because others have made things look easy.

People can exceed expectations when motivated properly. Competition, not cereal, is the breakfast of champions. You'll profit a lot more by trying to learn from your competition than by trying to destroy them.

Competition drives performance. It impels people to work harder and dig down deeper to deliver more than they ever thought they could.

Two hikers discovered that a mountain lion was stalking them. One stopped to change into running shoes and his buddy asked, “What good are those shoes going to do you? You can't outrun a mountain lion!” He responded, “I don't have to outrun the lion. I just need to stay ahead of you.”

There’s nothing like a little competition to boost productivity. Look at industry studies and you will consistently see that competition helped improve results.

I have always been very competitive.

I understand that some people don’t like competition, but you have to accept that competition is unavoidable in life. That’s the way our society works. And it’s my firm belief

that our society improves with competition.

Some parents have legitimate concerns about engaging their young children in competition. I understand their reluctance in situations where unrealistic expectations are set. But friendly competition is positive. Ageappropriate competition helps kids understand the importance of learning and improving. It is critical to prepare children and teenagers to compete in the real world. As they grow older, they will face competition in schools, getting a job, even buying a house.

A University of Florida study found that participating in sports is a healthy way to teach kids about the positive aspects of competition.

Playing sports helps kids understand how competition works in a friendly environment and that if they try their hardest, they have a better chance at succeeding, not to mention improving their health and self-esteem.

Mackay’s Moral: If you can’t win, make the person ahead of you break the record.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Money

Conversations, which commonly involve weather, have changed to inflation.

Sometimes the conversation becomes sprinkled by a little bit of anger, because you need to spend 10 to 20% more than a year ago. Some items, if they are available, are up over 50%. Some individuals feel that a big ugly thing has taken away 20% of their budget, without their permission. And they are correct.

All of us have items that we can recall being available a year ago, but now when they need the item, it's much more expensive.

I recently needed a new battery for my lawn tractor, the three year old battery that I was replacing cost $54.95, however the replacement is $139.95. Supposedly the battery prices will soon go higher.

A local farmer was illegally hit and his pickup was totaled. He called a GM dealership to order a new one and was told that the wait time would be about two years. My wife was looking at a replacement SUV. There are used vehicles available that are 3 years old and have 80,000 miles at prices from 80 to 90% of their cost new. Farm equipment is experiencing similar pricing issues.

In 1940, the price of gas was $.18 per gallon. When the normal inflation factors are added, the price of gas in 2020 should be about $2.40 per gallon. That was close to where it was. Recently the price has about doubled the price of one year ago. Our jobs and life depend on a certain amount transportation to get to our jobs, our retail purchases and being able to contact friends, family, doctors, church, etc. It is scary to look at the cost of having a car today.

When one takes into consideration the average driver, driving 15,000 miles per year, the gas expense is $3,375.00 per year at 20 mpg. He spends an additional $1,200 per year for repairs. His vehicle license is at least $100.00 per year. He probably spends an

additional $700.00 per year for car insurance.

So the typical driver spends about $.35 for every mile driven without adding in the cost of depreciation. We are starting to talk about real money!

When we, as a nation, go from being energy independent to a nation going to the world market to buy crude oil, there will be an increase in prices. A barrel of crude oil in January 2021 was about $50.00 per barrel, today it's $118.00 per barrel. In a year and a half, it more than doubled. When we go to countries that are not really our friends for our crude oil, we can't imagine that they will give us a special good price. I think that the price will be higher than the market price and since they can get higher prices from the US, I imagine other customers may also expect a higher price.

Could it be possible that someone is trying to increase the cost of driving a gas powered car so that the electric car will be a more attractive alternative? Can man cause enough additional wind and sunshine to make the needed electric car fuel? Is it possible for a small number of the world's population to cause the world to cool down? Looking back at history we see it's very possible that the smoke from a volcano will accomplish cooling, as has been done in the past.

As I've said before, it must have been global warming that melted our local glaciers 10,000 years ago. Is the removal of our shaded forests and the evaporation of our water levels making it warmer?

Hopefully the inflated fuel prices will do their job by stopping global warming.

Edwin H. “Ed” Koenig

Edwin H. “Ed” Koenig, age 87 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 18 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Edwin Herman Koenig was born June 7, 1935 in New Munich, Minnesota to George and Mary (Raeker) Koenig. He grew up in New Munich on a farm in Oak Township and graduated from Melrose High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army and served his country from 1955 to 1957; spending 16 months in Japan. Ed met the love of his life, Theresa Rooney, at the New Munich Ballroom and on June 13, 1961 they were united in marriage in Padua, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple resided in Sauk Centre where Ed owned and operated Depot Feeds for over 50 years. The family he created with Theresa was the most important part of Ed’s life. Together they created a large family that loved hard, worked hard and played hard. After retirement, Ed and Theresa enjoyed wintering in Florida for 16 years.

He enjoyed spending summers at lake cabin with his family and friends, playing cards and Farkle, and making an occasional trip to the casino.

Ed was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus, former president of the Lions Club, and former president of the Sauk Centre Chamber of Commerce.

The family he leaves behind include his wife, Theresa Koenig of Sauk Centre; children, Marlene (Dale) VanHavermaet of Ward Springs, Patsy (Dale) Ahrens of Ward Springs, Cheryl Kampsen of Brooten, Shelly (Gary) Swanson of Andover, Pam (Jacob) Hauge of Sunburg, and Sara (Michael) Martin of Bayport; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ann Zierden of Melrose and Flossie (Rich) Hoppe of New Munich.

Ed was welcomed to Heaven by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, numerous brothersin-law and sisters-in-law and son-in-law, Randy Kampsen.

Serving as casket bearers were Lance VanHavermaet, Dustin Kampsen, Austin Kampsen, Benjamin Swanson, Zachary Swanson, and Brian Ruegemer. Pall bearers were Naomi Ruegemer and Jennifer VanHavermaet. Cross bearer was Madalyn Martin and scripture bearer was Claire Hauge. Reader was Jana Messer. Gift bearers were Kelsey Moser, Brittni Berg, and Evalyn Martin.

Sylvester P. “Sylvie” Welle, age 84 of Spring Hill, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Sylvester Peter Welle was born July 9, 1938 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Michael and Adella (Meyer) Welle. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1956. On August 26, 1961 he was united in marriage to Judy Imdieke at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Sylvie took over the family dairy farm in 1961and in 1996 switched to strictly crop farming. He also worked as a field reporter for the Stearns County USDA for ten years.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill and the church choir, St. Michael’s Men’s Society, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic United. Sylvie enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing softball and baseball, taking trips to the casino, horses, gardening, singing and dancing, and playing yard games. He enjoyed watching sporting events and was a Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. Sylvie loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Judy Welle of Spring Hill; children, Mark (Kim) Welle of Richmond, John (Shannon) Welle of Big Lake, Eric (Jen) Welle of Rogers, and Lori (Ryan) Braegelmann of Melrose; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and sister, Bernie (Dave) Sieben of Melrose; and sister-in-law, Lillian Welle of Detroit Lakes.

Donald H. Herzog

Donald H. Herzog, age 84 of St. Francis, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 15, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 20 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Donald Henry Herzog was born July 17, 1937 in St. Rosa, Minnesota to Fred and Rose (Schreier) Herzog. On September 26, 1962 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Arceneau at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Donald farmed west of St. Francis for over 35 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis, St. Francis Men’s Society, and served on the parish council and a Trustee. During his retirement, Donald enjoyed working on and restoring Massey Harris tractors and taking drives around the countryside.

Survivors include his children, Fred (Alicia) Herzog of Randall, Gary Herzog of Swanville, Allen (Diane) Herzog of Freeport, Dennis Herzog of Burtrum, David (Teri) Herzog of Osakis, Shirley (Don) Winkels of Avon, Janet (Joe) Christen of Albany, and Janel (Alan) Marstein of Bowlus; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with two on the way; sisters, Monica (Cletus) Bechtold of St. Joseph and Bernadette (Bob) Ethen of St. Joseph; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Herzog on October 9, 1997; parents; and son, Duane “Whitey” Herzog on February 28, 2017.

Serving as casket bearers were Fred Herzog, Gary Herzog, Allen Herzog, Dennis Herzog, David Herzog, and Shirley Winkels. Cross bearer was Janel Marstein and scripture bearer was Janet Christen.

Herman J. “Howdy” Klaphake, Jr., age 84 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, July 18, 2022 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Herman Joseph Klaphake, Jr. was born February 14, 1938 in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herman and Anna (Middendorf) Klaphake. On May 30, 1964 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Kemper at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Howdy was born on the home farm and was able to be granted his final wish which was to die on the farm.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, Catholic United, and St. John’s Society. Howdy enjoyed farming, football, going to auctions, and his cats and dogs.

He loved driving around to look at the crops and loved spending time at the dinner table to catch up on all the local gossip.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Kathy Klaphake of Sauk Centre; children, William Klaphake of Sauk Centre, Patrick Klaphake of Sauk Centre, Sue Klaphake of Meire Grove, Tom (Rachel) Klaphake of Greenwald, and Jon Klaphake of Sauk Centre; granddaughter, Hannah Klaphake; and sisters, Margaret Breitbach of Elrosa and Valeria (Steve) Kral of Osakis.

Howdy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tony Klaphake and Edward Klaphake; and sisters, Leona Boeckermann and Lorraine Marthaler.

John Lawrence Klaphake was born January 2, 1934 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to William and Lydia (Derichs) Klaphake. John worked at Progress Casting in Plymouth most of his life. John married Roselyn Poepping on October 24, 1961 in Greenwald. John and Roselyn raised four children while living most of their marriage in New Brighton. Roselyn passed away on May 22, 1994. John then married Vera Lou Gertken on November 28, 1997 in Avon. They moved to Albany and John worked part-time for Avon Elementary for eight years, retiring in 2007.

John enjoyed spending time with his family as much as he could. He also loved going on trips, dancing, playing cards, and watching The Price is Right.

St. Joseph's Church Celebrates 100 Years

St. Joseph Church of Grey Eagle will be celebrating their Centennial Anniversary on July 30 and July 31st at both the Saturday 4:30 pm Mass and the Sunday 10:30 am Mass. Bishop Donald Kettler of the Diocese will celebrate the Sunday Mass with Father Ron Dockendorf.

A fellowship will follow each mass in the dining hall.

St. Joseph Church was originally built prior to 1922, but was first issued a pastor on July 30, 1922. The first choir was organized in 1922 and the Christian Mothers organized in 1923.

In 1931, St. Joseph Parish purchased an old Lutheran Church to be used as a parish hall annex. It was used for many community events.

An unattended fire destroyed that building.

In March of 1962 contracts to build a new church were designed to seat 400 people. The building was complete for midnight Mass in December 1962. The current church is designed to place the congregation as close to the Altar as possible.

In 1994, a large addition was built to

house a parish hall, kitchen, restrooms and classrooms. (Bob Kutter shared the history of the church.)

During the move to the new building, one of the Blessed Virgin Mary statues holding baby Jesus was severely damaged. She was stored in various church members homes until this year when Geri Allen asked to have it restored for the Centennial. A St. Joseph parishioner paid for the $1200 restoration. The Bishop will honor the statue at the 10:30 mass to welcome her back to her place in the church.

All are welcome to join us at the mass or following fellowship in the parish hall. Refreshments will be provided.

Grey Eagle United Methodist Church to Host Central MN Adult & Teen Challenge Choir

Inspiring choir composed of individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction to appear at the United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle. The church will host the Mn Adult & Teen Challenge choir in a free performance on Sunday, July 31 at their 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning service.

The choir’s contemporary gospel and praise music will be accompanied by the client’s inspiring stories of addiction recovery.

Additionally, representatives from the program will be available following the service to answer questions about the programs of Mn Adult & Teen Challenge.

The event is open to the public and all are welcome. The campus director states, “You don’t want to miss the message of hope brought by the MnTC choir. Their stories will

move your hear and renew your hope!”

For more than 25 years, Mn Adult & Teen Challenge has been restoring hope to teens and adults struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. They are one of the largest, most effective and most affordable programs in the nation with Minnesota campuses in Brainerd, Minneapolis, Rochester, Buffalo, and Duluth.

Mn Adult & Teen Challenge offers both a long-term, faith-based recovery program and short-term treatment programs allowing us to effectively serve individuals with a broad spectrum of addiction issues. Men and women seeking treatment for the first time to those who have been struggling for many years are served state-wide.

Every Sunday, client choirs from each of the Minnesota campuses visit regional churches where they share inspirational songs and personal stories of their recovery from addiction. The choir provides a unique learning environment and plays an integral part in the recovery process as residents truly benefit from giving vocal expression to the life change that they have experienced.

Chad “Tanker” Toenyan

Chad “Tanker” Toenyan, age 41 of Crystal, Minnesota, passed away after a courageous battle with colorectal cancer on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at his sister’s home in Freeport, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 26 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Freeport.

Chad Thomas Toenyan was born July 19, 1981 in Melrose, Minnesota to Carl and Mary (Hinnenkamp) Toenyan. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1999. He went on to college and soon found out that wasn’t for him.

He began working in food service, including Dimaggios in St. Cloud and Gina Marie’s in Eden Prairie. He then transitioned into retail and was a valued employee at Metrie Industries where he worked until his death. Chad enjoyed fishing, golfing, softball, duck and deer hunting, and watching Jeopardy. He was an avid Vikings

and Twins fan which lead to multiple fantasy football boards. Chad was a kind, fun loving guy and would often tell his nurses “I’m kind of a big deal.” His witty personality could single handedly bring back “Booya," which he did.

Survivors include his parents, Carl and Mary Toenyan of Melrose; sisters, Roxanne Schliemann (Michael Thell) of Freeport and Lori Korts (Mark Windschitl) of Cambridge; brother, Scott Toenyan of Garfield; nieces and nephews, Hailey, Hayden, and Goddaughter Hannah Schliemann, and Maxwell and Goddaughter Eleanor Korts; his dog, Kirby; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Chad was preceded in death by his grandparents, Norbert and Loretta Hinnenkamp, Edward and Marie Toenyan; uncles, Frank Toenyan, Jerome Messer, Ken Kulzer, and Melvin Wielenberg; aunt, Phyllis Messer; and nephew, Hunter Schliemann.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been a longtime fan and have used your advice to keep my vehicles in top shape for many years. I try to follow all the severe service intervals listed in my owner’s manual as you suggest but I feel I may be overworking the severe service times listed.

I tow a heavy trailer every weekend in the summer and several times in the winter as well.

My tow vehicle is a 2010 Chevy Silverado 4x4 half ton with 190,000 and I’m concerned about the differential fluids. How often should they be changed with the added towing load?

-Devin in Wray, Colorado Dear Devin, Following the severe service intervals is a great place to start if you are concerned about longevity of vehicle components. There are some cases such as yours where we would recommend even more frequent changing of some fluids or at least checking their condition more often. The rear differential is going to be immersed in the water every time you back the vehicle in and because of this reason you need to check it more often for water intrusion which can damage the rear end. Front differentials don’t get used as much under load when not in 4-wheel drive but can also be subject to moisture intrusion. When used in water such as your case we would recommend checking the condition of both the differentials at each oil change which should only take a couple minutes.

Dear Motor Medics, I have recently purchased my first allwheel drive vehicle which is a 1999 Audi A6 Quattro. I have owned several 4x4 trucks but never an all-wheel drive car. My last vehicle was a Jeep that was all wheel drive, and it still had a lever to change from low to high range. I can’t seem to find any knob or lever or reference to one in the Audi. Do all-wheel drive cars have such things? Is there anything I need to do to make it operate? What about service? Is there something more I need to do being that it is all-wheel drive? I value your opinions which have greatly helped me in the past.

-Tina in Dumas, Texas Dear Tina, All-wheel drive cars have been around for quite some time, and most have never had a choice of range selection. A few have them but in most cases such as yours the system is fully automatic and to operate it you simply need to drive the car as you normally would and when the system senses a slipping condition will engage both the front and rear driving wheels to gain traction. This is done either by means of electric clutches or viscous fluid couplings on most vehicles. The electric version uses sensors while the viscous version locks up by means of fluid in the clutches when a slip is sensed. As for maintenance, follow the severe service recommendations in the manual.

Grey Eagle City • June 14, 2022 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 14th day of June 2022 in council chambers. Council members present were Brad Johnson, Roland Ahrendt and Brian Hollenkamp. Council member Bill Pohlmann was absent. Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guests Bryan Bye, Chris Browen, Derek Pohlmann, Chris Pohlmann, Carlos Ramierez and Anna Juarez.

A motion was made by Brad Johnson to approve the amended agenda. A second was made

by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the minutes of the May 10, 2022 meeting as written. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

John updated the council on the following maintenance items: 1. The plow truck fuel tank is leaking and the front shocks need to be replaced.

2. There are thistles on the north side of the ponds and many gopher mounds.

3. The bathrooms by the picnic shelter are being left with plugged up toilets, and feces on the floor. Also the toys in the sandbox are being thrown up on top of the buildings.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve Resolution No. 2022-04, A Resolution Appointing Election Judges for the 2022 Elections.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve pay request #2 to Dakota Supply Group for $50,500.24. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Bye reported that he is waiting to hear back from Apex Environmental before paving will begin in the alley behind Grey Eagle Gas and Grocery.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to cut back the pavement and grade the ditch to flatten the depth of the ditch by Steve Bitz. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Matt Zinniel was not in attendance to discuss the boulevard paving. The council decision stands that the cost of the paving would be done by the property owner.

Council member Bill Pohlmann joined the meeting at 7:42 p.m.

Bryan Bye reported that the sunken sidewalks that are not cracked or broken will be mud jacked.

The council reported that the storm sewer

collar should be flush to the ground on Maple Street South that more black dirt will need to be put in and look into flat catch basin covers instead of the beehive covers.

Derek Pohlmann and Chris Pohlmann were in attendance to discuss water drainage issues along 287.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve a building permit application for Chris Browen to put in cement along the back door of the store to the house, approximately 5’x24’. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve a building permit for Carlos Ramierez to build a 6’x30’ addition to the north side of the trailer, change windows, and replace siding. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Building permit application for Bobby Pallansch was tabled until the property can be surveyed to establish property lines.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the quote from Jeff Triebenbach for $900 to build the sandbox for the volleyball area at the park. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brad Johnson to approve the quote from Update Building Supplies for $2,492.17 to replace the doors at the ballfield bathrooms. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council tabled the replacement of the boards for the bleachers until research can be done to determine what needs to be done for these bleachers to be compliant.

The council is waiting for a quote to turn one tennis court into a pickle ball court.

One of the dug outs at the baseball field blew over in a recent storm. It was temporarily set back up but it needs some repairs.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the quote from Update Building Supplies for $3,449.76 to replace the door to council chambers. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Council received a complaint regarding dogs roaming free and leaving behind messes on other people’s property. A letter will be sent to the resident.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve vacation for City Clerk June 21 through June 28. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council will discuss Clerk position at the July meeting.

The Clerk reported that a request was made by a representative from Verizon to install a tower on City property. The clerk was instructed to consult with the City Attorney.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the donation request from the Initiative Foundation for $260. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk was provided a list of potential junk or unlicensed vehicles. The council instructed that letters be sent to individuals requiring that the junk vehicles be removed, and unlicensed vehicles removed or have licenses updated by August 1 or the matter will be turned over to the Todd County Sheriff’s Department for enforcement.

The Council received two grant applications from Robert Kutter as part of the efforts of the group that would like to see the old Village Hall restored. One grant would help restore the front steps of the hall and the other would be for a feasibility study. These grants would require a matching grant from the City. The council tabled the matter until they have more time to assess the needs of the building and how that would impact the residents of the City financially.

The majority of the new water meters have been installed. There are three individuals that have not made an appointment. A letter will be sent that to those individuals informing them that they have until June 30th to reach out to Midwest Testing or the water will be shut off until the me-

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce For the last several months I have been preaching out of Galatians. I have learned to love this book and the challenge it brings to believers. Paul was chosen by God to preach to the Gentiles, and in the churches in the region of Galatia, there were some false teachers (Jewish) who were telling the Gentile churches that what Paul is saying is only partially right. He is telling you that you come to Jesus by only faith alone. But the law says that you must be circumcised. So, yes by faith and circumcision we receive eternal life.

Jesus did his best to react with love and tact to the Pharisees, whom Jesus called whitewashed sepultures (grave sights). They looked good on the outside but inside their hearts were wicked. So, in Galatians Paul says to the church in Galatians 6:13-15 “Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation.”

The false teachers weren’t even obeying the law but trying to force the new converts to do the law. Needless to say it must have been a confusing time. In verse 15 Paul nails it on the head! Circumcision or not… it doesn’t matter, what matters is, are you a new creation. You see, Jesus says, come to me, and I will give you rest. John 14:6 says “Thomas said to him, 'Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?' Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Come to Jesus today, If He is speaking to your heart, listen to Him, confess your sins, and invite Him into your life. That’s it!

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Blenker was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Life Link Helicopter. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Melrose Ambulance and the Freeport Fire Department. The incident remains under investigation. The zoo is still open to the public. Blenker’s injuries are unknown at this time.

Structure Fire: July 18, 2022: At 2:22 PM, the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received the report of a structure fire at 34118 400th Street in Melrose Township. The caller had noticed smoke coming from the neighboring property and found that a shed was on fire.

The property owner, Jacob Primus, reported there were no cattle in the shed at this time and that it contained some baled hay, chopped stocks, a small hay baler, and a grinder/mixer. The shed and items inside of it were a total loss. Melrose Fire Department, Freeport Fire Department, Sauk Centre Fire Department, Melrose Ambulance, Melrose Police Department, and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Freeport Animal Bite: July 13, 2022: At 2:44 PM, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an animal bite which occurred at the Hemker Park and Zoo. The zoo is located a few miles outside the City of Freeport.

Upon arrival deputies learned that the victim was an employee of the zoo and was escorting a camel through an alleyway to prepare it for transport to another facility.

The victim was identified as Roger Blenker, 32, of Albany. During the process, the camel placed Blenker’s head into its mouth biting down on his head. The camel then dragged Blenker by the head approximately fifteen feet. A second employee identified as Seth Wickson, 32, of Texas, was able to intervene. Wickson placed a plastic walking board into the camel’s mouth to release its bite from Blenker’s head. After being released from the camel’s mouth, Blenker stood on his own and ran to a safe location.

The camel then charged at Wickson and bit his head. Wickson was also able to get to a safe location on his own. Wickson refused any medical treatment.
