Athletes and actors have long hired coaches to help prepare for a specific competition or role. But they aren’t the only ones who can benefit from expert advice.

Coaches are available to help people in any field improve their “game.”

If you think leaders don’t need coaches because they are already at the top, think again. Professional coach Daniel Pendley says that executives need coaches for the same reasons that highperforming individuals rely on them: “1) We cannot see our own mistakes, and 2) if we are not getting better, we are getting worse.”

Let me add a third reason that leaders need coaches: They are setting examples for and coaching their employees.

Leaders need solid professional skills and superior people skills to establish their credibility and position themselves to move their organizations forward.

That puts leaders in a sandwich role: needing help to develop their own better leadership skills while coaching those whom they manage to develop in their own roles. We are all leaders when you think of it. We lead families, teams and organizations. Experience has taught me that being a respected leader or manager has little to do with relying on titles and everything to do with listening to people.

People love or leave their jobs for many reasons. Volumes of research have been conducted to help companies increase their retention rates. It all seems to boil down to one simple question: How important do people feel in their work?

Leaders who understand that they have a great responsibility in coaching should be able to answer that question easily. Here are the followup questions: When was the last time you, as a leader, made it possible for people to be proud of their work and achievements? What are you as a leader doing to make work satisfying, challenging, and interesting?

Robert Townsend, former CEO of Avis Rent-A-Car, summarized his view on leadership: “The real essence of

leadership is to care about your people, to help them get as much as they can out of the business environment, and to have as much fun as they can. Anybody who can do that – and really mean it – is a leader.”

Leaders and managers have a tremendous responsibility helping employees develop and learn. This challenge calls for coaching that is active and involved. Let me offer some proven advice to help you, as a leader, perfect your coaching skills.

1. Delivery is as important as the message. Before you offer up some constructive feedback, assess whether your attitude is oriented toward problemsolving or punishment. Make sure you are giving feedback that produces positive results, not demoralizing employees.

2. Tailor your coaching to the individual’s style. Understand that people learn in a variety of ways: hands-on experience, visual learning or team projects. Keep in mind the individual’s level of experience as well.

This approach may require a little more effort, but the results will pay off.

3. Coaching takes time and patience.

When you are busy with pressing matters, it’s tempting to take the easy way out by deferring concerns or questions. But that tactic may backfire. Employees begin to suspect that you don’t care and Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne High School

My second to last grandchild graduated high school recently.

I began thinking about how their high school experiences differed from my own.

I went to West Central School of Agriculture, which in later years was changed to the University of Minnesota Morris. We lived on campus and also had all of our meals in the cafeteria. Some of us had jobs on campus, which usually included premises upkeep or working with the animals on the experimental farm, which was next to the campus.

The school year was 6 months long, starting about October 1 and was completed about April 1. Each day began with classes at 8:00 and the last one was done at 5:00. This included 9 class periods and there was also a strictly enforced study in our dormitory rooms from 8:00 to 10:00 each evening.

There were no cell phones or internet connections in those days, so we actually studied. Our class consisted of about 40 boys and 15 girls.

My dad’s approach to me about attending school away from home was that if I went away to school, I probably would be able to play football, I’d be home to help with the silo filling in the fall and the planting in the spring. The

part that he felt was very positive was that the board, room and tuition for the 6 months was only $300.00 and if I was at home I would eat more than $300.00 of food. Actually, it was hard to argue with his reasoning.

Our classes consisted of the regular high school classes offered in those days plus shop, structural engineering and basic animal health and feeding.

Shop class was two class periods long and the only requirement was that we do something mechanical. We overhauled cars, pickups and tractors along with gas and electric welding. Our most fun project was to rebuild a 51 Chev 6 cylinder that would squeal the tires in all three gears. One day the Engineering Teacher informed us that our class that day would be witching. The reaction of the class was a lot of smirking and smart remarks about witchcraft. We went to find an underground drain pipe which was about 100 years old and about 10 feet underground. Our tools were a willow stick which we cut ourselves, a metal clothes hanger and a crow bar.

All of the class members were able to locate the underground pipe with all of the tools. I guess you’d say we became believers.

There was a home on the campus which was part of the girls classwork.

They lived in the house for 6 weeks, during which they performed all duties associated with a home. Their final test was an inspection by faculty members, along with a formal dinner in the house.

stop sharing valuable information that could prevent future problems. Keep lines of communication open, even during crunch times. Establish specific times when you can be available or designate someone who can act on your behalf, if necessary.

4. Explore options with your employees. While it may be simpler just to provide solutions, your goal is to teach employees how to handle similar issues in the future. Help them explore possibilities and analyze problems so they can arrive at solutions. That approach teaches critical thinking, consequences, creativity and costbenefit analysis. A great coach doesn’t just solve problems, but instead guides employees to develop their own abilities.

5. Emulate the best coaches you know. We have all had help along the way, and that’s a great place to start.

Find good coaches inside your own industry as well as in other businesses.

Learn from their successes and bring them to your organization.

6. Practice what you preach. Set a great example, and remind those you are managing that they have the same Swanville, MN

responsibility to those whom they manage. Look for ways to be a coach in staff meetings, workplace conversations, even email and voicemail. The standards and examples you set will speak louder than any statements you make.

of outside agencies. He became a good citizen without a criminal record to haunt him all his life.

I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to experience my high school years at WCSA. Since we were in close contact with our classmates, we look back and say we had over 50 brothers and sisters. I think about them every day and enjoy the e-mail updates.

council. Student council meetings were held Tuesday at noon. Teachers and students presented their cases and the student council decided the outcome.

This procedure made the students aware that their actions were being judged by their piers. Disciplinary action usually consisted of a reprimand letter, a couple hours of sidewalk ice chipping or restriction of the use of their car. The most severe penalty handed down was to an individual who dropped a cherry bomb down the stairwell in a dormitory.

The blast occurred at the main floor level. He was offered two choices, having his school attendance terminated or dig a hole in front of a building being remodeled. The hole was to be 6x6x6 and the work was to be inspected by the superintendent and then the hole was to be refilled, after which he was presented with his graduation diploma.

Obituaries Richard M. “Rich” Rademacher

Richard M. “Rich” Rademacher, age 73 of New Munich, died peacefully at home with family at his bedside on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating.

Interment will be the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic United Financial, and Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Richard Math Rademacher was born August 4, 1942 at home in Melrose, Minnesota to Virgil and Theresa (Zierden) Rademacher. He grew up on the farm where he was born and attended country school up the hill from the farm until the 8th grade when he attended Melrose Area School, class of 1960. Rich worked two years at Progress Foundries in St. Paul before proudly purchasing his own farm in April of 1966 south of New Munich. Rich married Karen (Wehlage)

on November 5, 1966. Rich poured his heart and soul into the family farm where he and Karen proudly raised their five boys. Rich semi-retired in 1995 and moved off the farm to the town of New Munich. Rich may have moved off the farm, but he was still a farmer at heart and would return to the farm daily to help his oldest son John with chores and field work.

Rich was a man of few words who enjoyed farming and spending time with family; especially his grandchildren.

Rich also enjoyed spending time in his recliner watching the activity outside, trips with the snowmobile club, fishing, winter spearing and watching Gunsmoke.

Rich was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic United Financial, Knights of Columbus, and the New Munich Snow Gliders.

Rich is survived by his loving wife of 49.5 years, Karen Rademacher of New Munich; five sons, John (Mary) of New Munich, Gary (Tracey) of St. Rosa, Tom (Shelly) of New Munich, Corey (Jessica) of Sauk Rapids, and Karl (Amanda) of Albany; brothers, Harold (Joan), Gene (Betty), Norman, and Chuck (friend Nancy); sisters, Bernice (Ron) Olmscheid, Joyce Yarke, Deb (Phil) Schmiesing; sister-in-law, Diane Rademacher; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Rich was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Theresa Rademacher; and brother, Leonard “Lenny” Rademacher.

Serving as casket bearers will be Kyle Rademacher, Dustin Rademacher, Brittany Rademacher, Ross Rademacher, Linda Heinze, and Dale Olmscheid.

Cross bearer will be Tami Rademacher and scripture bearer will be Jenna Rademacher. Honorary bearers will be the Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic United Financial, Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, and the New Munich Snow Gliders.

Ralph A. Muellner, age 80 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, July 21 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Thursday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Ralph Anton Muellner was born April 28, 1936 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Adolph and Frances (Denne) Muellner. He graduated from Grey Eagle High School and studied business at the Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis. Ralph served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Picconatto on June 2, 1962 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Ralph was passionate about his family, faith, and truly enjoyed farming.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Muellner of Grey Eagle; children, Jill Muellner of Plymouth, Anthony “Jack” (Rosemary) Muellner of Seabrook, Texas, Janet (Rod) Dusek of Sauk Rapids, and Ralph “Russ” (Patricia) Muellner of Seabrook, Texas; four grandchildren, Alexandria “Ali”, Katie, Isabela, and Andrew; brothers and sisters, Georgianna Haller, Jeanette (Tom) Blaeser, Eileen (Rich) Wallin, Harold “Harry” (Joan) Muellner, Betty (Tom) Iberg, Bernadette West, and Thom (Paula) Muellner; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Bruggenthies; brothers, Melvin and Tim Muellner; and an infant sister, Carolyn Muellner.

Serving as casket bearers will be Joe Bruggenthies, Al Bruggenthies, Tom Berscheit, Tom Blaeser, Rich Wallin, and Tom Iberg. Serving as cross bearer will be Ali Muellner and scripture bearer will be Katie Dusek.

Dear Dave, Our daughter is a special needs child, who doctors say will live about half as long as the average adult.

There’s also a good chance she will be under our care her entire life. We just finished Baby Step 3 of your plan, so we have all of our debt paid off except for the house, and we have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses saved. We have health insurance, too. However, we were wondering how the situation with our little girl affects retirement planning and college funding?

-Jonathan Dear Jonathan, I know this may sound strange, but the situation with your daughter really doesn’t affect things all that much. The only real difference is that it sounds like you’ll be responsible for your sweet daughter for the foreseeable future — not just until she’s 18 or 21.

If you don’t already have it, you and your wife should both buy 10 to 12 times your annual incomes in term life insurance. Make sure the money from the policies is set up to go into a special needs trust that would be managed for her care. That way, your baby will be taken care of in the event something unexpected happens to you.

Otherwise, just keep following my plan. Baby Step 4 means you start putting 15 percent of your income into pre-tax retirement plans, like Roth IRAs and mutual funds. Baby Step 5 is college funding, if that’s a consideration for her, followed by paying off your home early.

Then, of course, the last Baby Step is building wealth and giving.

Financially speaking, you’re looking at filling a need in the event of your deaths. This should be covered by life insurance or investments. If you reach a point where your investments are substantial, and money from those things can adequately cover her needs and the needs of your family, then you

-Dave Dear Dave, My husband has his own one-man painting business, and I help him with the books. We were wondering how you know when it’s time to implement a price increase. Also, what should the increase be?

-Lauren Dear Lauren, I grew up in the real estate business, so I’ll use the apartment-complex model as my example. If your building is completely full, then it’s time to raise prices a little bit until you have a vacancy. In this type of scenario, you want a healthy level of vacancy, meaning you’re always going to be losing some customers as you go up in prices.

In your husband’s case, if he’s booked through the end of the month, he’s way underpriced. Just keep on turning in your bids, and don’t make a big deal about things. It isn’t like a tenant, in your case, where you’re going back time and time again except in rare cases. You might start with a 10 percent increase, and see what happens for a while. If that goes well, wait a bit and raise them another 10 percent.

There are only so many hours in a day this guy can work, so the only other option is to take on staff. But before I start staffing, I’m going to raise prices and cut the number of customers that way. In most cases with the construction business, if you show up when you say you will, complete the job when you say you will, and you do high quality work, there’s almost no ceiling on what you can make!

What words best “describe” God? Are there some that are more precise, or accurate, to talk about Him? Is it more appropriate to use some words and not others to speak of Him? Throughout the Psalms, from beginning to end, David uses many different words to describe the various acts of God. While some of them are “high and lofty,” most of them are practical and helpful. He speaks of God as his deliverer, protector, friend, savior, refuge, and stronghold. All words we could observe if we were to see God walking

In bringing Psalm 62 to a conclusion he speaks of his relationship with God as “strong” and “loving.” He had experienced God’s compassion and care, protection and presence and power - as we have. He also enjoyed God’s love, grace and mercy as we, too, have. And then he adds something that is most interesting: “You reward everyone according to what they have done.”

David enjoyed God’s goodness. He mentions it again and again. He spoke often of those who wanted to kill him, defeat him, steal from him, embarrass him and even ruin his reputation. But through it all he survived and prospered.

He was deeply grateful for the mercy and grace of God and recognized them as “God’s reward” for his faithfulness in spite of his failures.

Learning From Your Mistakes

By Dave Ramsey Smart leaders learn from their mistakes. While it’s always easier (and less painful) to learn from the mistakes of others, messing up once in a while is inevitable. Hey, no one’s perfect, right?

Many of the best lessons I teach at EntreLeadership Master Series are culled from mistakes. I messed up, the mistake caused us pain, and I vowed never to make that mistake again. Remember, you will make mistakes. But making mistakes and learning from them is crucial to winning.

With that in mind, here are a few of the most common leadership mistakes and how to fix them.

Fear of …

A small amount of fear is healthy. It can be a motivator that makes you stop and think before making crucial decisions. When it paralyzes you, however, it becomes a huge problem.

How do you get past this kind of fear? First, recognize the possibility that these fears could be well-founded. Some decisions could cause you to lose money, customers or even team members.

Still, you can’t let vague possibilities drive and control the decision-making process.

Instead of worrying about it, devise a plan that carefully addresses your concerns. Set a deadline, gather facts, and devise options based on worst-case scenarios. Having detailed plans and contingencies in place greatly reduces fear and eliminates uncertainty of the unknown.

The quick hire...

One of the biggest mistakes business owners make is hiring personnel too quickly because they need someone.

In many cases, this creates even more problems down the road because you’ll find yourself in the unenviable position of having to hire for the same position

again!

At my company, we run people through the gauntlet before they’re hired. This includes an average of 10 interviews, a personality test, and a meetthe-spouse interview. Take whatever time is needed to find that perfect person for the job, and get the right people on the bus the first time. The result of this level of scrutiny will be a company full of stars and a very low turnover rate.

Control freak syndrome...

Yes, I know. That company is your baby, and no one can do things that need to be done better than you. Wrong! In order for anything to grow bigger and stronger, it must be allowed to stretch its wings. Whether you’re talking about your company or your children, this means letting go.

July 16, 2016: At approximately 6:33 pm, there was a report of an ATV accident with injuries at the intersection of 350th Street and 70th Avenue in Scandia Valley Township, south of Pillager.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 13 year old Emma Olson of Elk River, MN was driving a side-by-side ATV with passenger, 13 year old Kaitlyn Hines of Avon, MN. The ATV was traveling west on 350th Street, when it got to the intersection of 70th Avenue they attempted to make a left U-turn. The ATV rolled onto the passenger side and the passenger, Kaitlyn sustained a possible broken arm. She was transported

by Gold Cross Ambulance to the hospital.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Scandia Valley First Response Team, Scandia Valley Fire Department, North Air Care and Gold Cross Ambulance.

Burnhamville Township June 28, 2016 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held June 28, 2016 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Louis Thompson and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering and Brad and Becky Dawson.

The minutes from the regular meeting of May 31, 2016 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letters from the county about bridge inspection report, U.S. census and a tree service.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5275 through 5286: Rev. $961.88; R & B $13,162.23.

Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A resident commented that the culvert on the north end of 321st Ave is working right.

The township reviewed three ditch mowing bids. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the bid from DK Tree Service for ditch mowing. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Motion passed. More information will be requested for the brush cutting bid.

In the road report the contractor is almost done with dust control intersections. A request was made to fix intersection of Co. 104 & 331st Ave then finish dust control. Contractor will keep working on road inspection list.

The clerk provided a list of Election Judges. Sup. Berscheit approved and Sup. Thompson seconded the following for primary and general Election Judges: Shirley Hulinsky Head Judge; Pam Throener, Sharon, Muellner, Terri Holmgren, Mike Holmgren, Bonnie Alsleben, Brenda Schwanke, Chuck Macy.

Motion passed.

The supervisors are doing weed inspections and most areas are good.

Todd County Public Works will have a public hearing on Tuesday July 19, 2016 at 7 p.m.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $78,621.43. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 6, 2016 minutes to the board.

Birchdale Township supervisors were in attendance to propose a plan for Angler Drive.

Birchdale Township would like to apply for a grant for a reclaiming project for Angler Drive.

Since part of the road lies in Grey Eagle Township, the Grey Eagle Township board would need to approve the grant application.

Grey Eagle Township’s share of the project would be about 12% of the total cost. Ron made the motion to be part of the grant process. Mike made the second.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June. Claims list included 13 claims 2937-2949 for a total of $9,793.80. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Mail received included Rahn’s Oil contract letter, two P &Z letters: one next to the swimming beach and one on Mound Lake. The Mound Lake property owner then asked about the vacating process of Lone Street. After some research, he was informed he would need to petition the Township with at least 8 signatures to begin the process.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported on the progress of the signs on Chippewa Road and 341st. Ray also removed a tree from 341st. Ron reported that Carr’s Tree service is continuing with the tree removal and trimming project. Ron also had a call from a property owner on 116th which he checked out and will have Erv H. look at.

Additional agenda items: Mary Ann presented the list of election judges that signed up to take the election judge training. Mike made the motion to approve these election judges provided they have documentation of the training. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Lee Buccholz presented his mowing map from last year, which was reviewed and approved by the Board members.

Erv H. needs to apply gravel on 140th and then will apply spray.

Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting.

Parker won these honors with his Milking Shorthorn Cow Five Years Old and Older year older. Parker was also named Champion Milking Shorthorn Exhibitor.

The Reserve Champion Dairy Animal, a three year old Holstein, was also exhibited by Parker Gjerstad, Hustlin Rustics. Parker’s three year old was also named the Champion Holstein Exhibit.

Katrina Buntjer, Golden Gophers, exhibited the Reserve Champion Goat which was also the Champion Meat Breeding Doe Exhibit. The Reserve Champion Dairy Goat honors went to Sara Carstensen, Lone Star. Poultry: On Thursday evening, July 14, Judge Evan Van Beusekom of Dassel, Minnesota, judged the 4-H Poultry Show at the Todd County Fair.

Exhibiting the Champion Poultry Exhibit was Bernadette Sauer, Golden Gophers, an Egg Production Pen of Chickens, and Laura Sauer, Golden Gophers, received the Reserve Champion Poultry Ribbon, with her Market Pen of Turkeys.
