Stop reacting and start responding -By Harvey Mackay Wishing to encourage her young son’s progress on the piano, a mother took her little boy to a concert featuring the famous pianist, Paderewski. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “No Admittance.”

When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that her son was missing. Suddenly the curtains parted, and the spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway piano on stage.

In horror, the mother saw her son sitting at the keyboard. Innocently, he then began to play “Chopsticks.” The crowd reacted with disgust.

Who would bring a little boy to a concert?

When Paderewski heard the uproar backstage, he grabbed his coat and rushed to the stage. Realizing what was going on, he went to the piano and reached around the little boy from behind. The master began to improvise a countermelody to “chopsticks.” As the two of them played together, Paderewski kept whispering in the boy's ear, “Keep going. Don't quit, son... don't stop... don't stop.”

Together, the old master and the little boy transformed an embarrassing situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was mesmerized.

You might remember seeing a version of this story in a recent TV ad from the Foundation for a Better Life.

I learned early on, especially as a parent, that how you react to situations is huge. It’s hard

not to act emotionally. That’s how our brains are wired to react. Reactions are instinctive. Resist the urge. When you react with emotions, you do and say things without thinking and don’t realize the ramifications of your comments.

Emotions can be like a ticking time bomb.

Learning how to control your emotions can do wonders for your health.

Instead of reacting to these types of situations, learn how to respond and focus on the outcome rather than on the emotions.

Successful people have a plan on how to respond positively and productively. Practicing self-control is a learned trait, and it pays to study hard to acquire that skill.

Change your emotions and you can change your life. Anger is an emotion that fades over time, so a good defensive strategy is to pause and create some space between your emotions and reactions. Just a few seconds can help. Why do you think teachers and parents give their children timeouts? Give yourself a timeout! If you need to, walk away or take several deep breaths to calm yourself down.

It’s also possible to train your mind to respond slower. When you slow down you feel more in control. Take a minute to put the situation in perspective. Will it really make things better if you fly off the handle?

Be aware of what triggers your reactions.

Is it frustration, anger, anxiety or something else? Why did this situation occur, and could it have been avoided?

Empathy is another way to respond to situations positively. You never know what is going on in the lives of others that might cause them to behave in a certain way. A little empathy

can go a long way.

I have found that coaching myself and self-talk are also beneficial techniques. I try to block out negative thoughts and replace them with positive responses. I tell myself I have everything under control. That helps me avoid knee-jerk reactions that I will likely regret later.

A level head is important in both your personal and professional lives. No one wants to do business with a hothead. If your behavior is affecting your bottom line, fix it now.

I’m not saying that any of this is easy.

I’m guilty of letting my emotions get the best of me sometimes. But I try to learn from those missteps and consider how I could have handled the situation better. It takes a lot of hard work to break a bad habit, but it’s worth it.

Most of us live and work in such hectic and pressure-ridden environments that it’s wise to remember the words of the psychiatrist who said to his assistant who was trying to answer two telephones at once. “Miss Smith,” he said, “just say we're terribly busy – not ‘It's a madhouse here.’”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne July 4

We just celebrated the 4th of July. There were parades, fireworks, cookouts, social gatherings and many formal and informal gatherings.

There were a few gatherings where some of us senior citizens sat around and discussed subjects that were important to us, knowing that our discussion wasn't going to change things anyway. It just felt good to know that we had vented our opinions to others, thereby making us feel like some sort of influential person. Sort-of makes feeling of self improve.

A lot of us just felt good about the holiday without taking the time to remember how important the 4th of July really is.

The British Empire included a really big part of the land mass of the world. The Brits took most of their economic profits from the countries they controlled. They felt that since they were, in their minds, superior to the people they controlled, they then had a right to take from them anything they wanted. This included minerals, crops, animals, monies, natural resources and in some cases the people themselves. If there was a resistance to their actions, the Brits used whatever means they had to put down the resistance. This included whippings, killings, starvation and prison. They were able to exert their influence for over 400 years, which perfected their ability to exert influence.

The original settlers in our country were primarily from religious sects that were against violence, so they originally let the Brits control them. Later immigrants, along with some younger more progressive thinking citizens, didn't feel that they were being treated fairly in regard to their tax to the crown coupled with their feeling of contempt by the Brits and began to form groups of concerned citizens to discuss how these problems could be solved. The final solution seemed to be that we needed to get out from under the British rule.

The feelings were expressed by the words of the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal and they

are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It was felt that these words needed to be said to the British and also expressed to the American public.

On July 4th 1776, the feelings of the 13 American colonies were written and signed by 56 patriots. These fellows knew that by signing that document, they were placing their lives, their family's lives and their financial security in great jeopardy. They, as patriots signed it anyway and their fears of reprisals came true.

The Brits couldn't allow this form of traitorous behavior. The sad results were that two of the signors each lost two sons to the conflict that followed. One, a farmer, was chased from his property, his wife died and his 13 children disappeared. One had his wife jailed, followed by her death. One had his home destroyed by “friendly fire" after the Brits were using it as their headquarters.

Five were arrested, tortured and killed. Nine died of war wounds. Virtually all of them lost all of their worldly possessions.

We are celebrating because we won, but those that lead the way paid an awful price for the victory. Eight years later the war ended. We shouldn't forget!

Obituaries

Richard Matchinsky Jacqueline Matchinsky

Surrounded by the love of their family, Richard “Dick” Matchinsky (March 10, 2021) and Jacqueline “Jackie” Matchinsky (November 20, 2021) left this earth to join our Heavenly Father and remain together for all eternity. There is not a day that goes by that they are not missed and loved.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass at the church.

Dick was born in Melrose, Minnesota on May 4, 1935, to Frank and Helen (Flock) Matchinsky.

Jackie was born in Freeport, Minnesota on April 20, 1936, to Elmer and Adeline (Cech) Stommes.

Dick and Jackie attended Melrose High School and became high school sweethearts. Their love continued to blossom and on August 20, 1955, Jackie (Jace as she was known in high school) and Dick were married. Together they would be blessed with a large family of 6 children who they loved and nurtured. They embraced every opportunity to visit and catch up with their children. They raised their children in St. Cloud, Detroit Lakes, and Perham, Minnesota. They later moved to Glendale, Arizona and after they retired, they moved to Tucson, Arizona. They were known as “Papa” and “Nana” to not only their grandchildren and great grandchildren, but to anyone who got to know them. Over the last several years, they savored the love and companionship of their precious spoiled puppy, Lily, who remained by both of their bedsides.

They purchased a home away from home where they were able to enjoy their summers at their cabin in Forest Lakes, Arizona, in which they absolutely loved being in the tall timbers with nature all around them. They loved to sit on the deck swing and watch the grass grow, the wildflowers and trees bloom, and wait for their vegetables to grow. They created a place for family and friends to enjoy, which will be a cherished legacy for many years to come. Even though their hobbies were not always the same, Jackie did get the pleasure of tagging along on many hunting and fishing trips. However, if the “kids” were coming to visit, she never hesitated to send Dick on his way so she could stay home and spend time with her family. Over the years, the cabin was that special place for them to spend time with family and watch the kids grow up and learn all about gardening, planting trees, growing grass, experiencing wildlife up close, and of course fixing things as needed.

Dick and Jackie continued to love each other more every day, and they grew that love through their ever-growing family over the more than 65 years they were married. They leave behind their beloved puppy, Lily, and their children; Joan Baumann, Rick (Kathy) Matchinsky, Sandy (Phil) Riestenberg, Mary (Maarten) Kalway, Margo Scialo, and Amy (Dan) Miller, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. They also leave behind many relatives and friends.

They are preceded in death by their parents, Dick’s twin brother Robert “Bob” Matchinsky, and their granddaughter, Cassidy Matchinsky.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose.

Genevieve C. Zilka

Genevieve C. “Gene” Zilka, age 98 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 in Murray, Utah.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church.

Genevieve Catherine Super was born October 1, 1923 in Flensburg, Minnesota to Michael and Catherine (Maciej) Super. On October 23, 1941 she married Anthony “Tony” Zilka at Flensburg, Minnesota. The couple farmed near Little Falls before moving to Minneapolis. While in Minneapolis, she worked at Sears, The Bridal Shop, and kept books for the family business. Tony and Gene moved to Sauk Centre in the mid 80’s. Gene worked at the Corner Drug Store, later called Winter’s Drug, for many years in Sauk Centre. After her son passed away, she moved to Utah to be closer to family.

Gene was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed working and never really retired. She also enjoyed playing and would make occasional trips to Grand Casino Mille Lacs. Gene stayed active by playing cards, Bingo, baking, tending to her flower gardens, and in her earlier years, bowling on a league. Her greatest love was spending time with her greatgrandchildren.

Survivors include her grandson, Marc (Sharon) Zilka of Murray, Utah; and three great-grandchildren, Mauraya Zilka (Oaklee AKA Alan) of Sauk Centre, Lainey Zilka, and Anthony Zilka both of Murray, Utah; and many nieces and nephews.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Zilka on October 19, 2011; son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Rita Zilka; parents; brothers and sisters, John Super, Sophia Jelinski, Mary Hamernick, Rose Kedrowski, Annie Super, Andrew Super, Pete Super, Michael Super, Stella Grauer, Pauline Hlad, Philip Super, Thomas Super, Frank Super, and Adam Super.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services in Sauk Centre.

Thomas K. Holdvogt

Thomas K. Holdvogt, age 34 of New Munich, passed away while working on his family’s farm on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 11 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Dan Walz officiating and Rev. Derek Wiechmann concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Thomas Kenneth Holdvogt was born May 29, 1988 in Albany, Minnesota to Alvin and Bernadette (Wielenberg) Holdvogt. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2008 then in 2009 from Alexandria Technical College with a welding diploma. He then went on to help operate the family dairy farm.

Thomas was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich.

Thomas was a sincere, humble, and kind person that enjoyed all aspects of farming. He farmed with his father, brother, and nephews. His strengths included troubleshooting and repairing equipment. He loved John Deere machinery, working with animals, field work, round baling, and the harvest season. Thomas was a patient role model to his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his parents, Alvin and Bernie Holdvogt of New Munich; siblings, Judy (Pierre) Jensen of Clear Lake, Gerald (Naomi) Holdvogt of New Munich, Teresa (Jon) Mueller of Avon, Betty Holdvogt (friend, Trent Habiger) of Dallas, Texas, Joanie (Ryan) Hiltner of Sartell, Katie (Eric) Lauer of St. Martin, and Gina Holdvogt (fiancé, Austin Mittleider) of Alexandria; his puppy, Hershey; eight nephews and seven nieces with one on the way; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Thomas was preceded in death by his Godfather, Kenneth Holdvogt; grandparents, Norbert and Helen Holdvogt, Joseph Sr. and Marie Wielenberg; niece, Evelyn Mueller; and other aunts and uncles.

LeRoy (Roy) Harren

LeRoy (Roy) Harren, 90, Albany MN, formerly of Upsala MN, died on July 5, 2022, at Mother of Mercy in Albany. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Interment took place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

LeRoy was born on July 22nd, 1931, in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, MN to Norbert and Frances (Lange) Harren.

LeRoy was an Army veteran, serving from September 19th, 1949, with an Honorable discharge on October 8th, 1952. LeRoy was a Sergeant First Class serving Company C 86th Infantry Regiment. He was a member of the Upsala Legion Post.

LeRoy worked the family farm in Burtrum, MN and later bought a Hobby Farm by Upsala to raise pigs. Later, in 1975 LeRoy sold the dairy farm and focused on hog farming. Later LeRoy worked as a tile setter.

LeRoy enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and tried moose hunting with family and friends. He loved spending time with his friends.

Survivors include his children, Jeff Harren (Pat) of Swanville, Diane Lashinski (Duane) of Bowlus, Denise Harren of Buffalo, Joan Harren (Randy Peterson) of Hutchinson, Jack Harren of Melrose; siblings, Fr. Robert Harren, and Bill Harren; grandchildren, Jenny Harren, Chad Harren, Kristy Deslosrayes, Tina Harren, Ashley Lashinski, Michelle Lashinski, Kaitlyn Freeman, Joe Pommerer, Dillan Peterson; and great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Frances (Lange) Harren; brothers Ralph, Larry, Leander, and LaVerne Harren; granddaughters, Amanda Pommerer (daughter of Joan), and Vanessa Hazard (daughter of Joan).

Richard “Rich” L. Allord

R i c h a r d “Rich” L. Allord, 77 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at his residence. A Mass of Christian will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 18, 2022 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial will be in Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. A visitation will take place from 10-11 A.M. on Monday, July 18, 2022 at St. John the Baptist Church in Swanville, MN. Richard was born on June 21, 1945, in Little Falls Minnesota to the late Leonard and Mary (Hubner) Allord. He grew up in Belle Prairie Township, later moving to Swanville Minnesota and graduated from Swanville High School in 1963. Upon graduating he served in the US Navy until he was honorably discharged on November 12, 1965. Richard was united in marriage to Irene Hedin on July 29, 1967, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls, Minnesota. The couple moved to Coon Rapids, MN where Richard worked for Moorhead Machinery & Boiler Co. for 40 years until he retired. After retiring he moved back to the place he loved the most, his up north home in Swanville, Minnesota. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was also an avid outdoorsman that loved to camp, cut wood and was known for his famous tomato juice “liquid gold”. Another one of his happy places was his hunting shack in Kelliher, Minnesota where he spent many years deer hunting since he was a young man.

Richard’s children and grandchildren will forever remember the time he spent with them teaching them to hunt and fish. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Richard is survived by his wife, Irene Allord; children, Jeff (Joelle) Allord of St. Francis, MN, Kim (Scott) Heger of Carmel, IN and Rob Allord of Oak Grove, MN; siblings, Patty Jernigan of Columbus, GA, Ruth Olson of Anoka, MN and Hank Allord of Cushing, MN; and grandchildren, Alex (Jessica) Heger, Ryan Allord, Ben Allord and Claire Heger.

He was preceded in death by parents, Leonard and Mary Allord.

Rita Groetsch

Rita M. Groetsch, age 90 of Albany, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Friday, July 8, 2022 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11a.m.

Thursday, July 14 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany.

Rita had two favorite career experiences in her life. Her first passion was manager of the music department at Weber Jewelry and Music Store in St. Cloud, and her second was at Liturgical Press, St. John’s Abbey as a customer service representative.

Rita was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, the Christian Mothers, St. Ann Society, the St. Jude Mission Group, and the church choir. Rita had a love for all music, especially piano. She was often found in her sewing room working on projects and enjoyed sewing workshops to learn all the techniques, always reading books, magazines, taking classes, traveling, walks, and spending time with and helping her family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Larry Groetsch of Sauk Rapids, Sandra (Rick) Davis of Monticello, Rick (Anne) Groetsch of St. Cloud, and Mary Jane (Ken) Schleif of Becker; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred H. Groetsch on November 14, 2008; her parents Frank and Mary Kutzer; her brother, Allen Kutzer and infant brother Jerome.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m in the market for a car, a sporty car, a fastsporty car. Yeah… that’s what I’m looking for. I’m no mechanic but I’m mechanically inclined from listening to Under The Hood before that I just drove.

I seem to be getting a common denominator between all the models I look at, besides the high insurance cost and price tag. What I’m talking about is they all require premium fuel.

I’ve never owned a car that needed premium fuel in any of the cars I’ve had but they were never this level of vehicle. Premium fuel is expensive, do I have to use it or is that just a gimmick or some deal the car guys made with the oil companies to make extra money?

-Trevor in Denver, Colorado Dear Trevor, I like the way you think, about the type of car that is. A fast-sporty car sounds like fun but there are a few things you will need to sacrifice to own one, money, money, and money. What you’re after will need more expensive insurance, more expensive upkeep, and more expensive payments. The upkeep part is very important if you want your investment to last. The premium fuel is needed due to the higher compression and if not used the mileage will suffer and the engine can be damaged by detonation that can destroy pistons. Sorry, they’re not just trying to make the oil companies happy.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, Our 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is giving me trouble. It’s my daughter’s car and yesterday when she left work at five, she couldn’t get the key to turn on. She said it was like it was

the wrong key, she has two keys and she tried both. We had the car towed and they ended up replacing the ignition switch with a brand-new part. I assume it was a quality part because we were at a dealership. Now two weeks later we are having the same issue with the key sticking but if you wiggle it just a little bit it will turn on. I took it back to the shop and they can’t verify the sticking issue because it only fails every few days then works fine for a while. Do you think the switch is bad again and why won’t they just give me another one?

-Martin in Nebraska City, Nebraska Dear Martin, Yes you may have a repeat bad switch, but you could also have a bad cable from the shifter to the ignition lock cylinder. They don’t want to replace the switch again if it’s not bad and you don’t want to have to come back again when it still won’t work. Work with them and get some options so you get it resolved. Next, get that other key off her ring. Using the wrong key in a GM lock can damage it so eliminate that possibility.

Upsala City • July 5, 2022 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Crystal Benson, Wendy Rene, and Mitch Lange. Absent: Lana Bartels Staff present: Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk-Treasurer Jane Popp.

Minutes: Benson moved to approve the regular city council meeting minutes from June 6, 2022, 2nd by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda as presented with the addition of the Upsala Firemen’s Relief Association gambling permit, 2nd by Benson Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: No report submitted.

First Response Team: First Response Team Vice President Danielle Haus could not be present but sent an email reporting three calls for June and they will be doing a mental health training this next week.

The council tabled the date to hold a Council meeting with the First Response Team Officers since Danielle Haus was not present.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the City. Tschida is waiting to get a quote on the fire hall repair. Tschida found a portable generator in St. Cloud. Lange made a motion to approve to purchase the generator for $17,555.00 with the knowledge of a $10,000.00 grant from the department of health will go towards the purchase, 2nd by Benson.

By Aleta Edin I am writing in response to the editorial in last week’s issue concerning the recent Supreme Court ruling about abortion.

I have several comments. It seems that the letter writer likes to quote the Bible. The part she does not quote is the sixth commandment “Thou shalt not kill”.

Abortion kills the most innocent of our society.

Usually if two people collude to kill another human being it is first degree murder.

That is exactly what abortion does.

She quotes verses about helping the poor.

Our government has poured billions of dollars into welfare for the poor. There are also thousands of organizations in the US to help the poor.

All the Supreme Court did was send the issue back to the states. If they had wanted to they could have declared that the unborn child is protected by the Constitution which states that nobody shall be deprived of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness without due pro-

Just wondering how many of you have ever worked with insurance companies on a claim of any kind. My wife was in an accident a couple weeks back with a car that had full coverage on it. The insurance company is giving us about 75% of what it is worth. That is my disappointment. I am sure you all have had plenty of your own.

I trust that when it is time to face eternity, that you are not disappointed. Matthew 7:18-23 “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

This text is talking about false prophets (someone who says one thing and does another). On the day of Judgement, Jesus says, depart from me, I never knew you. He is also talking about identification. In other words, how can you tell? Look at the text; “by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Let’s get practical, God judges by His standards, not ours. So, in Matthew 5 it mentions that we all know that murder is wrong, but God looks at the heart. If we were to judge ourselves and look at our own hearts, would you say that there is anger and bitterness in your heart? Matthew 5 also talks about Adultery being wrong and we all know that. Again, God looks at the heart. Matthew 5:28 says “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” So, let me ask you, are you going to be disappointed on the day of Judgment?
