Work for a cause, not applause -By Harvey Mackay A l b e r t Einstein believed that “only a life lived for others is worth living.”

I believe that is one of his most significant observations.

And I couldn’t agree more.

W h i l e most of us can’t pretend to compete with Einstein’s contributions to society, we all have the capacity to do some real good for others. My father counseled me that a full 25 percent of my time should be devoted to volunteering.

I have worked hard to follow his advice.

So here’s my occasional plug for the importance and benefits of volunteering your time and talents for whatever cause, organization, community or individual you choose. I am certain you can find a worthy opportunity.

First and foremost, you can make a difference. Your individual skills,

your dedication, your determination – all are gifts that keep on giving if only you share them. A non-profit needs accounting help, a city garden would welcome an experienced weed-puller, a struggling student could use help with reading. There are plenty of ways to put your abilities to good use.

Sharing your strengths has a built-in benefit for you too: it’s a great way to enhance your current talents and master new skills. My friend volunteers to coach basketball for a team of 10-yearolds. She played the game throughout high school and college and enjoys working with kids. They think it’s cool that she can shoot 3-pointers. “Guarding these little hotshots is a better workout than I get at the gym,” she jokes.

And she claims she has improved her defensive skills by teaching the kids the proper way to guard someone without committing a foul.

Another offshoot of volunteering is the positive energy you spread and receive. Back to my basketball coach friend, the kids and parents are so grateful that she makes the time to work with them. She maintains that what she learns from the kids are valuable life lessons. Win-win all around.

Not everyone has the time or the desire to make a long-term volunteer commitment, but that doesn’t stop them from helping when they can. A number of local churches and companies in my city organize individuals and groups

to pack nutritious meals for starving children around the world. It takes just a few hours, and can be a one-time event or a regularly scheduled time slot. Training is provided, so forget that excuse!

One of my favorite volunteer days occurs every December in Minnesota when I ring bells for the Salvation Army.

Three hours of frigid fun – usually one of the coldest days of the year – but when I hear about where the money goes, I get all warm and cozy. Try it sometime!

A musician friend plays his guitar at a memory care facility a couple times a month. In return, he has made many new friends, from residents to caregivers to family members. “I will never be good enough to be on a national tour,” he says, “but this audience makes me feel like Eric Clapton!”

Community events are often begging for help. What better way to network with your neighbors and local businesses than to lend a hand?

I’ve made lifelong friends through my civic involvement – including several who became good customers! And for the record, I’ve done business with many people I would never have met otherwise.

While prospecting for business was not my goal when I signed up to volunteer, it was a pleasant result. As I worked with other volunteers, we developed friendships and trusting Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Clothes lines Many of us can remember a time before clothes dryers were common in rural homes. Clothes racks, made of doweling and frame-work, were a commonly used item for indoor clothes drying.

Lines also appeared stretched from side to side in the living room. This was a strong reminder that it was Monday and clothes washing was being done.

The dry indoor air produced from wood stoves dried the clothes within a couple of hours. It also added humidity to the indoor air, making it more comfortable to breathe.

Every yard had clothes lines in the back yard. These lines were usually heavy wire attached to a cross piece of wood attached to the top of a wooden post. Since the weight of the freshly hung wet clothes caused the posts to begin to lean in the direction of the clothes lines, an anchor wire, staked to the ground kept the posts vertical.

Wire clothes lines created a preferred bird roost. Robins loved to perch on the lines and sing. Bluebirds used the lines to do a sniper attack on any moth flying near the grass. Sparrows and swallows seemed to just enjoy the open roosting area. Wrens not only stopped on the lines, but if a clothes-pin bag was left hanging on the lines, they would begin to fill it with small sticks to create a nest.

Birds were not potty trained, so the

lines were sometimes soiled by bird droppings. Clothes hung on the lines would frequently have marks from bird droppings. It seemed that if a Sunday shirt or a special skirt was on the line, the birds used it as a target. This would either require special spot washing or a total rewash of the item.

Winter required most of the clothes to be dried indoors, except the bib overhauls, jackets and coveralls. For some unknown reason these items were washed and run through the ringer as usual, but were then hung on the outside line. Still being wet, these items froze stiff. One could hold these clothes by one edge and the remainder of item would stick straight out. They were then returned to the house to dry indoors. I never understood why this method of drying was used.

Backyard clothes lines are disappearing. Part of the reason is that it’s easier to just put the clothes in the dryer, (that is the woman’s reason).

The other part of the reason for their disappearance is the uncomfortable feeling in the throat that the guys get when they forget about the clothes lines, while driving the riding mower under them.

Although the birds really miss clothes lines and people miss the clean outdoor smell of clothes dried outside, indoor dryers are here to stay as long as we have electricity to move air through them.

relationships that transferred over to our professional lives. And whom do you think I call for help when another volunteer opportunity arises?

If you are still unsure about getting involved in a volunteer effort, consider this. Studies show that there are benefits to your physical and mental health, as well as improved self-esteem. It’s good for your brain to explore new activities and challenges. Doing for others can change your perspective and open up new ways of approaching problems.

Bottom line: volunteering presents opportunities to showcase your talents, meet new people, master new skills, spread joy and have fun, all while making a difference in other people’s lives.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned through my volunteer life, it is that I expect nothing in return. When I do something for another person or organization, I do it because I can. And that makes me the luckiest person in the world.

Help keep our community safe, watch your speed

By Freeport City Council: Mayor Mike Eveslage and Council Members Sarah Blake, Tim Hennen, Ben Ettle, and Jake Renneker To create a safer community, the city of Freeport is appealing to the good nature and common sense of our residents, visitors and travelers in town. We have a speed problem in the city limits of Freeport. Traffic speeds entering and leaving the city have been identified by the public and the city as a significant public safety issue. Freeport is an active, family community and we want everyone to be safe.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

July 1, 2019: At 14:42 there was a report of damage to property on 331st Ave. /Flicker Rd, Burtrum in Burnhamville Township. Multiple signs in the township were spray painted sometime around the weekend of June 29th. If anyone has information about this incident they are asked to contact the Sheriffs Office.

July 3, 2019: At 20:30 John Espree (50) of Long Prairie was stopped for poor driving conduct on State HWY 287.

Upon conclusion of the traffic investigation Espree was issued a citation for Open Container of Alcohol.

July 4, 2019: At 22:43 David Whalen (56) of rural Long Prairie was stopped for having expired registration and equipment violations. As a result of the traffic investigation Whalen was arrested for 3rd degree DWI and held in custody pending formal charges.

July 7, 2019: At 09:49 received a damage to property call from a resident who lives on County 100 in rural Sauk Centre, Birchdale Township. It was reported that multiple mailboxes were damaged along the road. The incident occurred between the hours of 22:30 on 07-06-2019 and 08:00 on 07-07-2019. The incident is currently under investigation. If you have information regarding this incident, please call the TCSO at 1-800-794-5733.

July 10, 2019: During the week of June 30th through July 6th, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 216 calls for service. The following were the types of calls: 70 traffic stops, 9 civil process, 11 suspicious activity type complaints, 2 damage to property complaints, 4 alarms, 3 thefts, 8 assist other agencies, 2 accidents, 6 traffic complaints, 4 domestics and 3 disturbances. Todd County Dispatch received 155 - 911 Calls during the week.

Our Main Streets are busy with people going to and from work; hard-working farmers and commercial trucks; kids enjoying summer at the ice cream shop; highway travelers just passing through; and weekenders going to the lake. These are the social and economic activities that keep Freeport a vibrant city.

At our June 25th meeting, the city council approved the purchase of 4 radar speed signs that will be going up on all entry points of town. Public safety should be a priority for everyone, so we are appealing to all travelers entering and leaving City Limits to please obey our speed limits.

Whether you are running late for work or to your kids’ ball practice or church or wherever you are going, you won’t make-up for any lost time by speeding in town. The end result of what could happen is not worth the risk.

Parents, be responsible role models and also talk to your driving-aged kids about this; business owners, please talk with your employees. The conversation around town should be what we can all do to help correct this issue.

Obituaries Carole Grace (Poole) Johnson

Carole passed peacefully, as she had wished, in her home surrounded by her family on June 25, 2019.

Preceded in death by her parents, Wadsworth Foster Poole and Janet Bell Hellier, and sisters Alice (Poole) Macintosh, and Mary (Poole) Korbel, her husband, Clarence Allison (Al) Johnson, of Al Johnson Photography, as well as many of her friends and family, including many of her close friends from Grey Eagle.

Carole grew up going to her parent’s cabin on the end of Sandy Beach on Big Birch Lake, she later bought the little red cabin next to it, so that her children could enjoy summers at the lake, as she had.

Carole’s parents were one of the first families in Minneapolis to be a two car family, and Carole’s mother drove. Her mother worked during WWI and made sure all her daughter’s had trade skills.

During WWII, Carole studied photography, which her husband later took up and made his career. After WWII, Carole and her husband, bought a new home in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, where she raised her family and was an active member of her community. After WWII, both Carole and her husband, Al, got polio, and Carole had to relearn how to walk, something she was

always proud of being able to do. Carole served on the PTA, the Gifted & Talented Program, the Republican Party, and at Westwood Lutheran Church. Carole was a mother first and foremost, and she was always home and attentive to her children, taking them regularly to the library, being involved in their schools, and making home cooked meals. Carole was a great seamstress, and was well known for making fashionable clothing, and she made her children’s clothing, something they will remember her well for. They were the first home in the neighborhood to have both a telephone and cable television when it came out. Carole also loved to entertain.

Family being so deeply important to Carole, every Monday for as long as her family can remember, Carole and her mother and sister, Mary Korbel, would rotate houses for lunch and to socialize.

Carole is survived by her brother, Foster Poole, and her children, Marcia Buegel, Gail Van Allison, Laura Johnson, Eric Foster-Johnson, and Faith Riverstone, and her grandchildren, Angela Buegel, Amanda (Johnson) Engels, Sophia Johnson, Morgan Ray Johnson, Katherine Riverstone, Katya Foster-Johnson, Nalana Foster-Johnson, and great granddaughter, Gracie Riverstone.

She is deeply missed.

Please join us in celebrating her life: July 26th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. (visitation at 10:00 a.m.) at Westwood Lutheran Church, 9001 Cedar Lake Road, St. Louis Park, MN 55426. Refreshments following service.

Sylvester M. “Sy” Bueckers, age 76 of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and Hildie on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 8 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Mike Benda presiding. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Sylvester Michael Bueckers was born December 22, 1942 in Melrose, Minnesota to Clem and Loretta (Rakotz) Bueckers.

Sy served in the Army and Army National Guard from 1960 to 1968. He was also the founder and owner of Sy’s Pallet Service for over 30 years.

Sy was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud and the Eagle’s Club of St. Cloud. Sy enjoyed dancing, ice fishing with family, and playing cards with his brothers and friends. He loved family gatherings and going to the casino with Hildie.

Survivors include his very special

friend, Hildie Benda; children; Chad (Sarah) Bueckers of Melrose, Nancy (Greg) Voss of Sauk Rapids, and Dawn Reiter of Rice; 7 grandchildren, Michael, Brandon, Justin, Travis, Brianna, Bailey, and Chloe; 2 greatgrandchildren, Noah and Londyn; brothers and sisters, Ervin Bueckers (friend, Shirley) of Melrose, Lorene (Aloys) Feldewerd of Melrose, Doreen (Ervin) Feldewerd of Meire Grove, Alvin (Sally) Bueckers of Albany, Ron (Sheila) Bueckers of Oklahoma, Tony (JoAnn) Bueckers of Texas, Dan (Geri) Bueckers of Melrose, and Clem Bueckers, Jr. of Melrose; sisters-in-law, Donna Bueckers of St. Rosa and Charla Bueckers of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Sy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David, Tom, and Eugene Bueckers; sister-in-law, Bertha Bueckers; and nephew, Kenny Feldewerd.

Serving as casket bearers were Michael Bueckers, Brandon Bueckers, Justin Voss, Travis Voss, Steve Feldewerd, and Chuck Kortuem. Cross bearer was Brianna Kortuem and bible bearer was Bailey Reiter.

Rita Agnes Wolbeck was born June 23, 1940 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to John and Leona (Hiltner) Wolbeck. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Sauk Centre Creamery until she married Clarence Trisko.

On September 2, 1963, they were united in marriage at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. She was a homemaker; raising their three children. Rita enjoyed sewing, reading, being on her iPad, and most of all, singing and playing piano with New Life Singers for over 30 years.

Rita was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church where she was a lector and Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister, served as president and vice president of the Christian Mothers, and served as fraternal secretary of Catholic United Financial. She also volunteered her time with St. Paul’s Befrienders for 5 years, was on the St.

Cloud DCCW committee and president of Sauk Centre DCCW Deanery for 20 years.

Rita is survived by her husband, Clarence Trisko of Sauk Centre; children, Kenneth (Brenda) Trisko of Stewartville, Kathryn (Lonny) Schultz of Marshall, and Kevin (Kristi) Trisko of Rochester; grandchildren, Trisha, Derek, Brock Schultz, Kelly (Peter) Engelmeyer, Paul, Jared, and Paige Trisko; great-grandson, Isaac Engelmeyer; siblings, LeRoy Wolbeck, Irene Uhlenkamp, Irma (Dave) Bromenshenkel, Irvin (Donna) Wolbeck all of Sauk Centre, Arlis (Dave) Pesta of Long Prairie, Marilyn Bromenshenkel of Sauk Centre, Doris (Dallas) Hamilton of Sauk Centre, and Joyce (Mike) Primus of Melrose; brother-in-law, Leo McKigney of Villard; and sister-in-law, Jeanine Wolbeck of Sauk Centre.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Arlene McKigney; brother, Donald Wolbeck; sister-in-law, Irene Wolbeck; and brothers-in-law, Vern Uhlenkamp and Dan Bromenshenkel.

Serving as casket bearers were Derek Schultz, Brock Schultz, Kelly Engelmeyer, Paul Trisko, Jared Trisko, and Paige Trisko. Cross bearer was Shari Saltmarch and scripture bearer was Trisha Schultz.

Gift bearers were Paige Trisko, Derek Schultz, and Paul Trisko. Reader was Laura Bromenshenkel and Kevin Trisko gave the eulogy.

Kenneth R.“Ken” Roske

Kenneth R. “Ken” Roske, age 65 of Freeport, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Kenneth Richard Roske was born December 19, 1953 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to John and Bernadette (Rennie) Roske. He grew up on a farm in St. Joseph, Minnesota.

He graduated from Apollo High School and attended St. Cloud Vocational School for welding. He married Diane Wensmann on November 22, 1975 in Elmdale, Minnesota.

Together they raised five children on a dairy farm near Upsala, Minnesota. They farmed for 26 years before selling the farm and moving to Freeport. He worked at Central Livestock in Albany for the past 11 years.

Ken was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. He enjoyed fishing, fixing puzzles, going to auctions, and traveling with his wife. He also enjoyed

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Hilaria “Larry” Nelson, age 82 of Upsala, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, July 12 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Larry died on July 4 at her home surrounded by her family in Upsala. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Thursday and again after 10:00 AM, Friday at the church in Upsala.

St. Mary’s parish prayers will be at 6:30 PM Thursday evening.

Larry was born March 12, 1937 in Farming to Joseph and Rose (Rolfes) Evens.

Reader was Joy Wensmann. Eucharistic Minister was Sylvester Tschida. Mass servers were Tyler Wensmann, Sean Wensmann, and Austin Wensmann.

She lived in the Upsala area for most of her life. She married Donald Nelson on February 17, 1976. The couple owned Don and Larry’s Liquor in Upsala for several years and then they owned the Uptown Cafe in Upsala. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. She loved to tend to her flower gardens. Larry was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Larry is survived by her sons, Bob Scholz, Upsala and Bill (Julie) Scholz, Upsala. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Lance Scholz and Tonie (Josh) Koehn; her brothers and sisters, Elmer (Gen) Evens, St. Cloud; Joseph Evens, St. Cloud; Mildred Sand, New Munich; Jenny (Peter) Doll, Albany and Bernadette Cordie, Richmond.

Larry is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donny Nelson in June of 2008 and her brothers, Buddy Evens and Benno Evens.

Donald E. “Don” Prom Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 6, 2019 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Donald “Don” E. Prom, 86 of St. Cloud, formerly of Bowlus, who passed away on Tuesday, surrounded by his loving family. Rev. Scott Pogatchnik officiated and burial was at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Cemetery in Bowlus.

Donald Eugene Prom was born on September 2, 1932 in Mayhew Lake to Edward and Marie (Bromenschenkel) Prom.

He married Mary Bechtold on November 23, 1961 at St. Wendelin’s Catholic Church in Luxemburg. The couple made their home in Bowlus for many years, until moving to St. Cloud in 2001. Don served his country in the United States Army. He founded, owned and operated Prom Excavating together, with his son, Chuck for 40 years. Don also

Israel in a military battle. They looked at their loss as punishment from God. But the Psalmist does not focus on the loss, he focuses on the fact that God has brought them out of captivity in the past and forgave them of their sins.

With confidence and boldness he says, “Restore us again, O God, our Savior.”

The message for us to take away from this Psalm is that in times of depression, defeat and darkness we must remember God’s grace in the past and pray in the present for His restoration.

Sometimes when we look at our past and are buried with the guilt of our sins we are fearful of going to God and asking for His grace in these moments.

We feel that we are undeserving and unworthy. We approach His throne of grace in fear and trembling, wondering if we have any right to ask for forgiveness, cleansing and restoration.

But when these thoughts plague us, we must remember that God’s judgment is always tempered by His mercy and He will always forgive us, restore us and revive us again.

Dear Motor Medics, I purchased a 2007 Honda Odyssey van with 40,000 miles and I thought I got a great deal.

The used vehicle inspection only had one suggestion, new tires. I took the van to a tire store and they quoted me 2000.00 to replace the tires and I thought I was going to die on the spot. I thought they were out of line when they said I had special PAX tires, so I left the store and was told the same at another. What is this PAX thing and who would ever be willing to pay so much for minivan tires? Can I get rid of them and install regular tires?

-Fred in McCook, Nebraska Dear Fred, Surprise! It feels like they should yell this when you go to get these replaced. Yes they’re expensive but they are very different from other tires and that’s why they are. These tires were installed on some 05-09 Honda Odyssey, 06-08 Nissan Quest, 06-08 Acura RL, and 05-09 Toyota Sienna vans and some others. The tire is a run flat design allowing you to travel with no air for a limited time. They require special equipment to repair or replace and not every tire store has the equipment. To change to a regular tire requires changing the wheel as well making it very expensive. Either way it will be a jolt to the wallet. Check the internet for more information and options on these tires.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a very bad smell when I turn on the blower in my car. It smells like a dirty refrigerator. I must run the system for a few minutes with the

windows down before I can stand to sit in the car. This started last year and has progressively become worse. It does not matter if it is set to heat or air conditioning. What could this be and how can I get rid of the smell?

-Terry in Enid, Oklahoma Dear Terry, The smell you have is likely exactly what you are describing, the smell of a dirty refrigerator. As you drive with the A/C on, water forms on the evaporator inside of the air box and when it is saturated runs out of the box through a tube. You can see this water condensation running on the ground if everything is working correctly. If you don’t’ or have wet carpet you need to have the tube cleaned. When you shut the vehicle off the water can start to mildew like a refrigerator and start to smell. Some vehicles get so bad that they need to be cleaned professionally with a system that introduces an antibacterial cleaner into the intake of the system to clean it up. Check with your local shop to see if they can check the system for proper drainage and if they recommend performing this service to take care of the smell issue you have.

Burnhamville Township May 28, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held May 28, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Vice-Chair Bruce Johnson. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Absent: Mike Berscheit. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of April 30, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Muellner. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about planning and zoning, summer training and requests from Dogwood Loop and Dunlin Road residents.

A motion was made by Sup. Muellner to pay all bills numbered 5756 through 5769: Rev. $1,495.95; R & B $11,213.79 Fire $9,005.00. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A landowner on Dunlin Road is concerned about the culvert close to their new access. Sup. Johnson made a motion for township to put in an elbow and culvert on Dunlin Road. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A resident in Pillsbury call supervisors concerned about the neighboring house that is rat infested and deteriorated. Supervisors viewed property and agreed. The board will check with county to see what we can do.

In the road report with the almost constant rain the dust control has not been sprayed yet. Once weather dries up contractor has to regrade and upgrade roads before spray can be done. The board also had a complaint about the gravel on 331st Ave again we will have to wait for weather to dry up. Board approved the road inspection list with the addition of culvert for manure hose on Ermine Drive later in the summer.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $72,102.98. County taxes will be coming in at the end of the month and dust control payments were received. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Johnson and seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

The township board was advised to move some of its savings into a money market account which would earn more interest. Sup. Johnson made a motion to move the money from savings to a money market account. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Ditch mowing contract will be tabled until next month.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Darlene Maciej is planning to have a Kids Day June 17, 2020 with a goal to have the project be supported by the Upsala Lions. It would be an activities day for the kids including a race, an obstacle course and disc golf.

Economic Development: Community Economic Development Associates President Ron Zeigler presented several items to address issues that were brought up

by Johnson and Stevens.

Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels. He also reported on the discharge samples.

Tschida explained the need for a backpack weed sprayer.

Tschida also reported on the water leak at Lange Oil. Koopmeiners shared how the purchase of an Uninterruptable Power Source (UPS) saved the City from the need to purchase the new computer screen for the water plant computer.

Koopmeiners is working with Joe from Minnesota Rural Water, the goal is to do the test July 15 or 16.

Fire Department Report: Lange explained the Upsala Fire Department has a plan for Heritage Days. He also stated the pumper training went well; everyone had a turn to practice.

Benson moved to adopt resolution 7-1-19-1 accepting grant money from the Department of Natural Resources for the purchase of new pagers in the amount of $1400.00, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

First Responders: The First Response Team minutes were presented.

Strassberg explained how the team is now trained to administer more medications prior to the arrival of an ambulance when they are on a call. They are set for Heritage Days and are working on the open house which includes their gun raffle on October 6.

The council reviewed the proposed First Response Team Ordinance. Benson moved to call for a public hearing to discuss the propsed First Response Team Ordinance August 5 at 7:15 p.m. during the regular City Council Meeting, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

As a transition to the upcoming ordinance for the First Response Team, Benson moved to thank the current First Response Team Board of Directors for their diligent work to create a successful Team under the City’s umbrella for the last couple of years, and to dismiss the Board of Directors; as of today the leadership will be restructured to Officers: a president namely Steve Hansen, a vice president namely, Seth Strassberg, a secretary namely Garrett Doucette, and a training officer namely James Warga to hold office until the end of 2019, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the July Calendar.

Stevens explained how with the switch to a different checking account with Stearns Bank, the City will now gain 1% interest on the checking account instead of the 0.5% they were receiving before.

is a hardship for the Liquor License owners to have to renew their license at the first of the year. Lange moved to change to Liquor Licensing date to April 1 of each year and to extend the 2019 license to April 1, 2020, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Planning Commission: Lange updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been working on.

Lange moved to approve a lot split - dividing parcel 47.037.001.000 located at 155 Walnut Avenue into two parts; with approximately one acre going to the Upsala American Legion for their Memorial Park, 2nd by Westrich.

Motion carried unanimously.

UCDC: Benson shared the progress of Heritage Days which is set for August 9-11 and explained that that the raffle proceeds will be going to City Park improvements.

Benson suggested inviting business owners to join the Upsala Community Development Committee.

Recreation Board: Rec Board will meet July 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Unfinished Business Crack/Fill/ Pothole Repairs: Johnson stated that All Things Asphalt filled in the cracks in the city streets last month, and that the potholes are scheduled to be filled later this summer.

Heritage Days Funds: Benson updated the Council on where the Heritage Days Committee is at in the process of getting a separate checking account.

Boom Truck from Sytek: Johnson stated that the City agreed to purchase the boom truck from Sytek Communications for $4,500.00.

Cash Basis Accounting: At the last meeting City Auditor Jon Archer questioned if the City was going to go strictly with a Cash Basis for accounting or to use the Regulatory Basis of Accounting which keeps the proprietary funds still being reported under full accrual accounting. Stevens shared the resolution that was passed in April stating that the City chose to go with the Regulatory Basis of Accounting.

New Business: Initiative Foundation donation: Lange moved to give $360 to the Initiative Foundation in 2020, 2nd

by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Preschool Kids Playing in the Streets: Johnson shared his concern about little kids playing in the streets. The Council would like to send out a friendly reminder to be aware of where our children are and please have them play in their yards, or parks, etc.

Bicycles on the Sidewalks: Johnson explained that people in town are using the sidewalks to navigate. He stressed that bicycles should be driven on the streets using the same rules as other vehicles.

Refinance the Walnut Street Bond: Stevens explained how the City is paying a high interest percentage on their GO TIF Bond 2014B. Working with David Drown’s Financial Advisor Jason Murray, the City can reduce the interest rate on the bond if they choose. Benson moved to refinance the Walnut Street Bond, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: Frank Koopmeiners has officially retired as the Full-Time Public Works Director for the City of Upsala. He has worked for the City for over 30 years and we are grateful for his dedication and service to our community for all these years. There will be an official retirement party after the regular City Council Meeting on September 3. Everyone in the Community is welcome!

Michelle Stevens, Clerk/Treasurer Grey Eagle Township July 1, 2019 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe. Also attending was Erv Herdering.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 3, 2019 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June.

Claims list included claims 33333345 for a total of $40,108.58, which included dust control and crack filling. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included a letter from the Rahn’s Oil, trainings, P&Z, City of Grey Eagle for a temporary easement, and a gas line survey. The Board agreed to have the clerk sign the easement papers in front of a notary and return it to the City.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray began with the washout on 341st and suggested that Herdering use crushed rock to fill it. He cut three trees on 116th and asked about the brush in the road ditches. Could he ask sentence to serve to cut some brush along the road ditches? Or Spray? He said he will clean up the wood in the road right of way along 341st, about two hours should be all. Ray had Loren F. call Central Specialties for him and Mike from Central Specialties told Ray he would get a quote to him this week. Need to make sure the work can be done before October if possible. Mike made a motion to go with the lowest bid for the road repair on 335th and Ascot using the cement injection at 5% for the entire road.

Ray made the second. All in favor, motion carried. Breezy Drive -the holes have not been fixed but should be soon. Ditch mowing – only one bid was received for $85.00 per hour by Leland Buchholz. Ray made the motion to accept the bid.

Mike made the second, Motion carried. Ron had a call about possible noxious weed- Ray will meet with the County weed inspector this week, to check it out.

Eight beavers were trapped, some discussion on what type of proof the Township needs to get in the future.

Additional agenda item: The insurance representative visited on June 19th to look over the town hall. His report will be sent to the company and the Township will get a notice if any changes are needed. Mary Ann attended the Summer Short Courses in St. Cloud.

Updates on the CTAS program, insurance and vacating roads were some of the topics. Mike received a call from the sheriff’s dept. about a cooler in the ditch, however, it was not located.

Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:05 p.m.

Swanville City June 4, 2019 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Also present: John Gessell Sr., Sharon Blumke, Jeremy Boots, reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, May 7, 2019 were reviewed. A motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by Deb Wood and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

Resolution #19-0604A was presented to the council which states authorizing the sell of real property located in North Berkey Plat lot 4 block 1 to Sharon Blumke. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve Resolution #19-0604A and authorize the sale of lot 4 block 1 in the North Berkey Avenue Plat to Sharon Blumke. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

John Gessell Sr. was present and stated he is interested in purchasing appx 115’x112’of land to the north of his lot on North Berkey Avenue. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to sell Gessell the land by his house for $1000.00.

There will be no hookup to water and sewer at this time but down the road if that would be desired both fees will be charged. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

Mayor Lange will call the surveyors and a purchase agreement will

be wrote up.

Sharon Blumke stated she would be interested in more land to the north and west of her lot also.

Mayor Lange stated she would get in touch with Sharon when the surveyors are in Swanville.

Jeremy Boots, city engineer, he would like the approval from the council to write up specs for the water tower quotes, that way all the companies would be on the same page for the quotes. Jim Molitor made a motion to have Jeremy write up the specs for the water tower quotes. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried. Jeremy estimates the quotes for the work inside and the touch up on the tower would be about $100,000.00. A micro loan would need to be applied for.

Resolution #19-0604B was presented to council, which states the Swanville Lions Club will donate $1000.00 to the City of Swanville for the flowers on main street.

Deb Wood made a motion to accept resolution #19-0604B. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

Sharon Blumke applies for a land use permit to build a house with garage on lot in North Berkey Addition. P & Z committee approved permit. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the land use permit for Sharon Blumke. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

John Hoogenhous applied for a variance for an addition onto his existing garage on Forest Hill Lane.

The P & Z committee did not approve the variance and it was not approved by the city attorney because the addition being too close to the set backs and needs to be a practical difficulty. Council did not approve.

Council members discussed complaints that they received.

These complaints included full garbage bags by a house, lawns not being mowed and putting the grass clipping on the street, a semi-truck being parked overnight on a narrow street. Letters will be sent to violators. Council are asking residents to be considerate of your neighbors and keep your property free from garbage and their lawns cut.

The Swanville Lions Club is requesting a 3-day temporary strong liquor license for the Swanville Carnival June 28, 29, & 30.

Tony Maciej made a motion to give the Swanville Lions Club a 3-day temporary strong liquor license for a fee of $80.00 for June 28, 29, & 30, 2019. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried. The Clerk will send in the necessary paper work to the State of MN. There are a lot of complaints about jake braking on the main

by Mayor Ron Strassburg. Those in attendance included; Ronald Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Deb VanHavermaet, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Sharon Erickson, Kevin Rohde, and Dustin Wiechmann.

The meeting minutes from June 3rd, 2019 were read and approved by a motion made by Kevin Rohde, seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Sharon Erickson.

The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Kevin Rohde, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, Herdering Inc. will be doing dust control and grading of roads this month.

Next, in new business, Initiative Foundation donation was agreed upon, vote motion made first

by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Works of The Flesh and Fruit of the Spirit; Galatians 5:1, 13–25 Galatians 5:1 boldly tells us that in Christ we have been set free. Paul’s focus in this chapter is on encouraging us to live out that freedom and to not submit again to a yoke of slavery. In verses 13-25 he presents two lists of behaviors.

The first list is the works of the flesh.

These are actions that are profoundly self-serving. In sin we are bound to this type of behavior. The flesh we are born into is broken and turned in on itself. In this fallen world we see plenty of this type of behavior. Sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies and things like these.

This is not how we were created to be. Apart from the love of God and the perfect image of mankind found in Jesus we are not even aware of our bondage to sin and selfishness. Many religions attempt to break us free from this bondage but end up subjecting us to a different yoke, a slavery to the law and good

works hoping we are good enough to receive the reward of eternal life. This is the slavery Paul is warning against in our text which is as self serving as his first list which doesn’t inherit eternal life.

The freedom we have is that we have been set free in Christ through faith. God offers forgiveness through the cross and those who hear and believe this good news are set free from the notion that we can somehow overcome sin on our own. We can’t, God’s way is by grace. Why submit again to a yoke of slavery?

In Christ we are free to live in the Holy Spirit bearing good fruit, doing things that serve others rather than ourselves. Not that these are tasks we need to do to inherit eternal life but they are tasks we are free to do because we have inherited eternal life through Jesus. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. We are free to exhibit this fruit as much or as little as we are able.

In Christ we have been set free.

Due to an unhappy curse, the king (played by Dan Cheney) is unable to speak. Meanwhile, his terror of a wife, Queen Aggravain (played by Leonice Prokott) has taken over control of the kingdom. Most importantly, in an attempt to keep Prince Dauntless (played

by Samuel Zimmerman) single, the queen has declared that only a princess that can pass her outrageous tests may marry her son. Furthermore, no one else in the kingdom can marry until Dauntless does. Lady Larken (played by Mel-

anie Cimenski) and Sir Harry (played

by Jay Baggenstoss) are extremely concerned by this fact, since Lady Larken is expecting with Sir Harry’s baby. Sir Harry goes in search of a princess suitable for the prince, Princess Winnifred of Woebegone (played by Beth Cimenski). Will Princess Winnifred pass the test that the Queen has chosen?
