The roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need more money.

At that moment, the substitute organist played “The Star-spangled Banner.” And that is how the substitute became the regular organist.

The ability to think on your feet like this organist and react to events without prior thought or planning is a critical life skill. Some of the best training I received on this was when my father encouraged me to join Toastmasters International many moons ago. You have to get up on your feet at a moment’s notice and talk about a subject for several minutes.

In business, you never know when you might be called on to lead a discussion or team meeting, respond to an inquiry, solve a problem, present a proposal or sell an idea.

The key to thinking on your feet is confidence. You can’t worry about what others think of you or how they perceive you.

Prepare for every meeting. What are commonly asked questions? Rehearse

for situations. Think of the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared. You need to have working knowledge of the subject.

Practice for what you think might happen.

Listen and pay attention to what is being said. Seek clarification if you don’t understand. One of the ways I do this is by repeating the question. This helps me make sure I understand the question, and it also buys me more time to prepare my response. It doesn’t hurt to say you need a moment to think about how to answer that great question.

Don’t be uncomfortable with a brief period of silence; rather use it to your advantage. It will convey that you are thinking and preparing a proper answer.

Too many people rush to get their words out. Slow things down by pausing to collect your thoughts.

Another technique I like to use is storytelling. I often use humorous stories to drive home points. When I speak to corporate audiences, I divide my talks into lessons and wrap up each lesson with a humorous story. This engages people and captures their attention.

Whether you have an audience of one or one thousand, storytelling can make a difference.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne 30 Below The current weather causes us to think back to cold times in earlier years. We have had some great improvements to help keep warm.

W a r m clothing was primarily made of wool. Extreme cold required wearing a sheepskin coat, home knit wool stockings and possibly wearing “flight-pants.” The common trait of these items of clothing was that they were usually heavy. Today, there are lighter weight clothing items, which are as warm and weigh much less. Four or five buckle overshoes and felt shoes were common foot coverings. They worked quite well, but were a little bit heavy.

Remember going down to the barn and banging the dull side of the hatchet against the door to break the ice so the door would open. When you were able to open the door, there was a massive cloud of steam coming out of the barn.

It was warm and moist in the barn, but there were many duties which required the farm worker to be outside, such as, feeding steers, pigs and carrying ground feed to the cows and outside animals.

Everything was either stiff or frozen.

To actually describe the situation, it was miserable.

When my Dad was courting my Mother, he skied cross country about four miles each way. On one memorable trip, he was skiing through the woods on the trip home and he heard a lot of

trees cracking from the frost. When he reached home, he decided to make a stop at the out-house, rather than going down to the barn. He thought it felt quite cold and when he came to the house, the mercury showed -27. Then he really felt cold.

I remember riding the school bus on a still cold morning and as we were coming down the hill, you could see the white plumes of smoke going up from each house. I wish I had a picture of the scene somewhere. It would have made a beautiful wall hanging.

When motorized vehicles began to appear in the rural area, it usually was not a benefit during really cold weather. They were meant to drive to town, haul the manure, grind the feed, remove snow, etc. The problem was that they didn’t start. Since they were liquid cooled and alcohol cost money, water was used in the radiators. Water was drained from the motors, since it would freeze. Sometimes a pan with burning coals was placed under the motor and a horse blanket covered the motor. This warmed up the engine, but the batteries were weak, so more effort was required.

When it was determined that the motor was warm enough to start, boiling water was poured into the radiator to help increase the motor temperature.

The horse blanket was removed and a crank was put into the front of the motor. Human strength turned the crank to make the darn thing start. The crank was dangerous to the human, since sometimes the engine would backfire and cause the crank to swiftly turn backwards, smacking the human on the wrist, arm or face, if it was near enough.

This caused many splints and scars.

Get used to being put on the spot.

You know it is going to happen, so do your best to anticipate what the other party is looking for. If you don’t know an answer, say so. Don’t add to the problem by making something up.

You’ll look foolish.

If you are drawing a blank, turn the situation around. Ask if there is a desired outcome or response. It’s okay to ask, “Did you have something specific in mind?” or “What would be the best ending for this story?” Understand that the right answer may take some time to develop. And it’s not always the first or quick answer.

Finally, relax. This is especially hard when your heart is racing and you are feeling pressured. Calm down, take a deep breath, and resist the temptation to blurt out your first impulse just to get it over with. Chances are you will have a second opportunity to arrive at an acceptable reply.

The boy walked into the back room and said, “There’s some jerk out there who wants to buy only a half a head of lettuce.”

The stockboy turned around to find the man standing right behind him. He quickly added, “and this gentleman wants to buy the other half...”

most helpful on the farm is the skid-steer.

Not only is it’s versatility needed during the summer months, but it is great in the winter. The machine has great traction, but many are equipped with an enclosed cab, a super benefit in the winter. They move feed for the cattle. They make barn cleaning much easier and best of all, they move a lot of snow quickly. Many of us can remember spending lots of time scooping snow and are happy that those hours have been greatly reduced.

We, in Minnesota, seem to be able to take pride in our ability to tolerate the cold. We get no trophies, but it does give us bragging rights.

Snowmobile Crash January 27, 2019: At approximately 10:46 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a report of snowmobile crash in the ditch at Highway 238 and County Road 17 in Krain Township.

According to Sheriff Steve Soyka, Tyler Anthony Douvier, 26, of Albany, was driving his 2010 Arctic Cat SnoPro 600 snowmobile northeast along Highway 238. As he continued to follow the highway, he lost control of the snowmobile when making a curve at County Road 17. After losing control the snowmobile, it rolled causing Douvier to be thrown from the snowmobile.

Douvier was transported by Melrose Ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Holdingford Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance assisted the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

January 27, 2019: At 19:35 responded to a one vehicle roll-over on County Rd 11 North of Hwy. 27. Carlos Escareno was northbound when he lost control of his 2001 Chevy Suburban on the snow covered roads causing the vehicle to enter the ditch and roll-over.

The six occupants of the vehicle were checked out by the Long Prairie Ambulance. No serious injuries were reported.

The Long Prairie Fire Dept. assisted at the scene.

Obituaries Helen R. “Bunny” Bruder

Helen R. “Bunny” Bruder, age 62 of Long Prairie, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at her home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 2 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Inurnment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held following the service at Midway Bar and Grill in Long Prairie.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Helen Rosalie Bruder was born February 8, 1956 in St. Peter, Minnesota to Ronald and Dorothy (Manley) Gardner.

On February 16, 2001 she was united in marriage to Lester “Dan” Bruder in

Long Prairie, Minnesota. Helen was first and foremost a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. Her family meant the world to her and she cherished them every day. Bunny was the office manager of Dan Bruder’s Septic Service that she and Dan owned. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting blankets, baking cookies, playing BINGO and scratching Minnesota state lottery tickets. She loved fishing, Dan’s Harley’s, and loved spending time with her husband and her dog, Willie.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Bruder of Long Prairie; children, Rhonda (Chad) Sorenson of Elysian, Amy Krueger, and Beau (Heidi) Krueger of Burtrum; eight grandchildren; sisters, Rona Hoehn of St. James and Debbie “Lil’ Red” (Dan) Schubbe of Wells; brothers and sisters-inlaw, Mark and Laura Kortan of Sauk Centre and Vince and Kathy Dolan of Iowa; and many loving relatives and friends.

Bunny was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are preferred.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

R o b e r t (Bob) was born January 20, 1939 in Upsala, Minn, on the Weisbrich farm by Pine Lake. His father Carl Blaise Weisbrich and mother Anna Marie (Putze) Weisbrich farmed until their deaths (6 weeks apart) in early 1947. Thereupon Bob’s travels began.

Robert was a Veteran serving in the Marine Corps. Upon his discharge, he moved to Seattle, Washington and worked

Proceeded in death were his (2) brothers Clarence and Anthony (Tony) and (2) sisters Mary Ann and Irene.

Roger B. Borgerding Roger B. Borgerding, age 78 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Galeon Community Memorial Home in Osakis, Minnesota after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 26 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating and Rev. Jeremy Theis concelebrating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Roger Bernard Borgerding was born October 27, 1940 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Herman and Bernadine (Hoeschen) Borgerding. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School. On August 20, 1963, Roger was united in marriage to Caroline Veronica Schaefer at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

The couple farmed south of Sauk Centre and together raised their five children.

(Suzanne) Boom of Sartell, MN; Nita (John) Feiler of Albany, MN; Toni (John) Miller of Brighton, CO; Audri (special friend Mike Ostendorf) Zeis of Waite Park, MN; Vincent J. (Mia) Boom of Libertyville, IL; sisters, Emily (Paul) Pike of Ocala, FL; and Bernadine Marzen of Mason City, IA; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, great granddaughter Cadence Feiler, brothers, William, Vincent, Theodore Jr., and Robert Boom, sisters, Sr. Juanita Boom and Jean Pitzenberger, and uncle George Boom.

Roger truly loved farming and after his retirement, he continued to spend many hours helping on the farm. In 2009, Roger and Carol moved from the farm to their home in Sauk Centre. When Roger had the time, he enjoyed fishing, gambling at the casinos, attending auctions, and playing cards. He tinkered on many of the auction winning bids and found great value in fixing his purchases.

Roger was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include his five children, Brian (Mary) Borgerding of Sauk Centre, Scott (Kim) Borgerding of Melrose, Greg (Christy) Borgerding of Rogers, Brenda (Roger) Jensen of Holdingford, and Rod (Melanie) Borgerding of Coon Rapids; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Alice Sunderman of Grey Eagle, Ralph (Arlis) Borgerding of Sauk Centre, Carol Kramer of Chanhassen, and Arlene Fuchs of Elrosa; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Carol Borgerding on July 6, 2015; parents, Herman and Bernadine Borgerding; and sisters, Diane Barret and Joan Hieserich.

S h i r l e y Magdalene Schmidt was born on May 5, 1937 to Louis and Monica (Finken) Ramacher on their family farm near St. Anthony, Minnesota. She died peacefully on November 21, 2018 at her home in St. Cloud, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie on June 5, 2008.

She is survived by her four children:

Dawn (Bradley) Welsh in Onamia, Minnesota; Jeffrey (MaryBeth) Schmidt in Wallkill, New York; Zane (Angela) Schmidt in Johannesburg, South Africa; Sonya (Timothy) Dorfner in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Three grandchildren: Amanda (Derek) Gustafson; Ashley Welsh; Mitchell (Genelle) Welsh. Two great-grandchildren: Olivia and Logan Gustafson. Sister: Rose (George) Eiden, Brother: James (Jean) Ramacher, and many nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and great-aunt and her hope to live on earth in paradise forever Rev 21:4 and garden/cultivate the earth as per our creators original purpose in establishing the Garden of Eden.

Sandra “Sandy” Towle A Celebration of life service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 2, 2019 at American Lutheran Church for Sandra “Sandy” Towle, 74, of Long Prairie, who passed away We d n e s d a y, January 23, 2019 while visiting family in Louisiana. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Friday, February 1, 2019 at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Rev. Bill Bakewicz will officiate and a private burial will be at Moses Dane Cemetery in Butrum, MN at a later date.

Sandy was born on December 7, 1944 to Albert and Ann (Nebel) Weidendorf in Mora, MN. She attended Centennial High School in Circle Pines, MN. On January 13, 1964 she married Anthony “Tony” Towle. Shortly after, the couple moved to Colorado Springs, CO where Tony served in the military. They returned to Pine County, MN where they lived until they moved to Swan Lake, MN in 1976.

She was grateful for her successful heart transplant in 1994 and persevered through all of the follow-up treatments. Though her health was failing, she was determined to take one last trip to family in Louisiana.

Sandy’s sharp wit and sense of humor will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her children and grandchildren all agreed when one affectionately said “she had a stern scowl that at the same time said that she loved you.”

Gilbertson says her favorite class is English because she feels it is preparing her for college courses. She says her most valuable activity is volleyball because it is something she enjoys and allows her to help others to grow.

After graduation, Gilbertson plans to attend Ridgewater to get her LPN. Her advice to her classmates is “Get your stuff done and be smart!”

It begins with the writer carefully reviewing many instances of feeling forsaken and abandoned by God. He writes of calling for help - but no voice responded. His eyes would not close - and he was reminded of tragedies he wanted to forget. He felt rejected and unloved and even gave up on God ever being faithful or kind to him again.

Then, suddenly, his mind called things to a halt. God seemed to awaken him and he said, “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes I will remember Your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all Your works and consider all Your mighty deeds.”

Our minds do wander and walk through dark valleys filled with deep sorrows and painful valleys. And when it does, it only takes a moment, if we choose to turn things around and change the shadows and sorrows and valleys in to sunlight and smiles and mountain tops. God did this for the Psalmist. He wants to do the same for us: recall His miracles in our lives that give us eternal hope.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2005 Buick Lesabre and under the back of the vehicle there are what appears to be shock absorbers and they have air lines attached to them. They both are leaking what I assume is oil and I hear a noise that lasts for about four minutes each time I start the car. This noise used to last only about 10 seconds if it happened at all. I have several questions. Does this mean the shocks are bad? Is the noise I hear the air compressor that fills the shocks? Can I let it go for a while because it seems to still ride well? How expensive is it to repair this problem?

-Gary in Sheldon, Iowa Dear Gary, You have load leveling shock absorbers in back which means they not only control the firmness of the ride but they level out the vehicle when extra weight is added to it.

When a shock leaks or the vehicle has excessive bounce, it is an indication of the need for replacement. Oil is used in the dampening of the shock and when it leaks out the shock can no longer control the bounce compromising your safety. If you leave the shocks the way they are the compressor which you hear running will eventually burn out and be very expensive to fix. These shocks are usually available at most parts stores for a reasonable price and take about one hour to replace.

We took your advice about finding a used

car and having it inspected before we purchased it and were able to negotiate repairs for some safety issues on one of them before we took possession so we are ok with the cars. What we are worried about is that in addition to the car we supplied our children with new cell phones. We have lectured on the dangers of texting and driving more than once but with the large number of messages sent daily from their phones the temptation is too great. We have seen them texting as they drive away and pull in so we know it is happening. We don’t want to take away the phones because we feel much safer when we can contact them but we cannot allow them to use the phones while driving. Do you have any suggestions?

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Bills to crack down on distracted driving are introduced It appears that some kind of legislation regarding cell phone usage while driving will become law this year in Minnesota. Bills to that end have been introduced in both chambers, and the House version received bipartisan support in the Transportation Committee during its first hearing last week. The bill, House File 50, would ban the use of hand-held cell phones in a motor vehicle while the vehicle is in motion. Blue tooth or one-touch mode of operation would still be allowed. Just what the penalties for breaking this proposed law will be are not certain yet.

I’ve heard discussion of fines that get larger with each infraction all the way up to confiscation of the phone. With the price of today’s technology, that could range up to a thousand dollars or more.

I do think something needs to be done to address the problem of inattentive driving. It’s scary going down the freeway and being passed by someone doing 80 mph and having a cell phone up to their ear. Texting or actually calling a number while driving is worse yet.

The act of texting is already against the law, but it’s difficult to prove someone was actually in the act of doing it. I’ve even heard that the law makes texting more dangerous, as some drivers now try to hide the phone down on their lap instead of holding it up on the steering wheel in an effort to avoid detection.

Will this proposal eliminate the problem of inattentive driving? No, but it will draw more attention to the problem and make us think about locking our phones away while behind the

wheel. It’s also a much more dangerous situation to be on one’s phone while traveling at a high rate of speed or in heavy traffic. Obviously, driving down a gravel township road where traffic is sparse is a different story.

There are also other ways a driver can be districted. Engaging in conversation, sight-seeing, and plain old inattention can also lead to problems, and we really can’t legislate those things away.

Bottom line is that each of us needs to devote full attention and keep our eyes on the road while driving.

Our Republican Rural Caucus – comprised of members of both the House and Senate – heard an interesting presentation last week from folks representing the Minnesota Hospital Association. The main topic of conversation was proposed legislation to allow residents to buy into a state-run health insurance program known as MinnesotaCare.

The problem with such an expansion is the payment rates doctors and hospitals receive from the program. There is real concern that if Minnesota Care reimbursement rates remain the same, many rural hospitals would not be able to sustain a viable operation. The mix of payments between Medicare, Medicaid, and Minnesota Care, along with private or commercial health insurance, is key to a hospital’s financial operation. Currently, the private or commercial health insurance payment rates are higher, and they are used to offset reduced or underpayment from those government programs. If that ratio of payment types were to change dramatically and more residents were shifted from commercial health insurance to Minnesota Care, for example, that could prove to be challenging for our hospitals.

With snow, cold temps, and bitter wind chills, we are in the middle of an old-fashioned Minnesota January.

Surveys Will Soon Be Required For All Property Splits Many times a survey is needed to make a proper land transaction. A survey and subsequent protection of the property corner pins helps keep everyone honest and ensures that future construction meets set back requirements on both sides of the line.

Adoption of M.S. 272.162 effective January 1, 2018 required that Planning and Zoning regulations be followed for all land subdivisions. This includes property line adjustments and administrative splits. The requirement for a survey is planned to go into effect June 1, 2019 and is expected to benefit at least four land services departments.

The Planning and Zoning Department will have less setback issues and expect to spend less time on these types of violations. It will also be easier to review applications to adjust property lines to ensure they meet County Ordinance requirements.

faster and less errors in legal descriptions will occur since survey generated coordinates will be used.

The County Assessor will have more accurate measurements of acreage for taxation purposes and reduce county liability for tax abatements. Metes and bounds descriptions can accurately describe a parcel but they do not necessarily show where the parcel is on the ground.

The Auditor Treasurer expects to see less conflicts and disputes with landowners will result in more timely payment of taxes since the acreage is not being disputed. Also less properties may go into forfeiture.

The GIS Department foresees that the surveys submitted to the county will improve the GIS map layer accuracy as points throughout the county are ground trothed by surveyors. This will lead to improved accuracy of the GIS system which is used extensively by all departments and the public.

It’s About America, Not You

By Manuel Ybarra, Jr. Dear Editor: Many in the House and Senate need to realize this is ABOUT AMERICA, NOT ABOUT THEM, and their morally corrupt political parties.

They are paid high wages to work for America in a fair, sensible, and godly way.

That is not what we are getting for our money now!

The safety of America should be the most important thing to our legislators.

Is there any common sense left in city Mayors and state Governors? What has happened to the education systems across America that turns out such irresponsible leaders?

These leaders cannot take care of their own, yet most offer sanctuary to illegals, even if they are known criminals. By doing so, they are encouraging the world to migrate to America, against our immigration laws.

Any one who encourages others to break our laws is, or should be consider a criminal themselves.

Those who claim it is immoral to use barriers to stop illegals from entering our country happen to be the most immoral people around.

The most recent example is the ungodly state of New York, which passed a new Bill, and their proud Governor signed into law, allowing that state to legally murder babies “UP TO THE DUE DATE.” Unless they repent and turn back to GOD, America WILL GET SICKER THAN THAT! The guilt rests on unbelievers, and on believers too.

On believers, because we failed to stand on God’s Word. That Word of God tells us that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, for INSTRUCTION in righteousness.” Yet we remained silent!

A murderous heart requires REPENTANCE, or Hell will be the judgment. Saying the Wall/or Barrier is immoral does not cancel the horrible immoralities being supported.

Stargazing with GRRL’s new telescopes Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will have 20 new telescopes available for checkout beginning on Feb. 1, 2019.

Since 2017, GRRL has had an Orion StarBlast Reflector telescope stationed out of the Buffalo Library, thanks to the generosity of library supporter Mark Boyd of the Buffalo Rotary.

The telescope has been extraordinarily popular, prompting the Rotary to generously donate the funds needed to add more telescopes to the GRRL collection.

MnDOT completes five-year study on speed limits The Minnesota Department of Transportation is increasing speeds on 5,240 miles of state highways based on the recommendations of a five-year study released last week. The speeds will increase from 55 to 60 miles per hour.

Of the 7,000 miles studied, speed limits ultimately will be increased on 77 percent of rural, two-lane state highways, according to the final report. New speed limits go into effect once new speed limit signs are posted. Most of the signs posting the new speed limits are in place, with the rest expected to be up by spring 2019.

The Minnesota Legislature in 2014 mandated that MnDOT study on all Minnesota two-lane roadways with a speed of 55 miles per hour.

It is the most comprehensive study the agency has made in terms of miles studied and level of detail, according to Nathan Drews, engineering specialist in the Office of Traffic Engineering.

The study is also the largest system-wide change in Minnesota speed limits since the national maximum speed limit of 55 mph was included in President Nixon’s Emergency Highway Conservation Act bill in 1974. The Minnesota Commissioner of Highways later that year established an executive order about speed limits.

mine if a speed limit could be changed without affecting motorist safety.

The recommendation for a speed increase along each of these roadways considered the speed that 85 percent of motorists drive at or below along with an evaluation of other factors, such as access points, shoulder width, vertical grades and crash history.

MnDOT has conducted before and after studies on many roadways that recently increased to 60 mph. There was no change in the overall 85th percentile speed from before the speed limit change to after. The mean speed, which is the average speed of all drivers, increased by one mile per hour and the standard deviation, which is the measure of how spread out the drivers’ speeds were, reduced slightly.

“This means that after speed limits increased, travel speeds at the locations sampled were slightly more consistent between each vehicle,” said Drews.

“In other words, more drivers traveled at a similar speed after speed limits increased. This is a desirable outcome, but this change is very slight and may not affect the frequency or severity of crashes.”

This most recent study echoes results from the previous studies. From 2006 to 2013, MnDOT increased speeds to 60 mph on 1,550 miles of two-lane rural highways. Studies conducted to determine the impact of raising speed limits on those roadways found that the overall 85th percentile speed before and after the changes were the same, the average speed increased slightly and the variation of the speeds decreased.

Drews said a properly selected speed limit can potentially increase the safety of the roadway by creating uniform travel speeds for all vehicles.

MnDOT plans to study the effect of the changes over the next several years to ensure these roadways continue to operate safely.

Two bills, one goal: Legislation aims to create long-term solutions to Greater Minnesota’s child care shortage for more licensed child care providers “The child care shortage is a comA pair of bills that call on the state to make modest investments to help address the critical child care shortage in Greater Minnesota were introduced at the Minnesota Legislature.

SF 537/HF 422, authored by Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) and Rep. Jeff Brand (DFL-St. Peter), and SF 538/ HF 423, authored by Sen. Jerry Relph (R-St. Cloud) and Rep. Brand, both create and fund new grant programs with the shared goal of increasing child care capacity while fostering successful and sustainable child care business operations in Greater Minnesota.

“A big appreciation to Sen. Nelson, Sen. Relph and Rep. Brand for taking on this complicated issue,” said Nicole Griensewic Mickelson, executive director of the Region Nine Development Commission and president of the Greater Minnesota Partnership (GMNP), an economic development advocacy organization that has been working with

legislators to explore ways to address Greater Minnesota’s child care needs.

“Communities and businesses are reeling from the effects of the child care shortage,” Griensewic Mickelson added. “These bills are a promising start to bringing more child care options to Greater Minnesota and helping providers run successful businesses.”

While the child care shortage is a major concern across the entire state, the impact is particularly acute in rural communities. According to a study by the Center for Rural Policy and Development, Greater Minnesota lost more than 15,000 child care spots between 2006-2015— largely due to a significant decline in in-home providers. Child care centers have helped make up for the loss of in-home providers in the metro area and larger population centers, but small and medium-sized rural communities are still struggling to fill that void.

During the reformation, Luther and the reformers emphasized the Word of God as an authority. They also emphasized the value of teaching people the Bible. From this and other passages they concluded that the Bible was simply written and the basic meaning or sense of the text could be understood by reading and rereading it as a community of believers.

The people helping teach listed in verse 7 gave the sense of the readings. Some hidden or secret meaning to scripture is not what we are after as followers and readers of God’s Word.

Anyone claiming to have secret insight is deceiving their students. What we should be after is the basic sense of the text. We must be very careful in who we learn scripture from because it is pretty common in our day and age for people to teach their own doctrines and not God’s. It is easy for churches or people to want something to be God’s Word and to teach it that way.

gave the sense of the readings and people understood. There are indeed helpful doctrines that help people understand what they are reading like “Law and Gospel.” In my Lutheran tradition I have been taught to understand and teach scripture so as to hold the basic sense of scripture as true. When scripture presents conflicting ideas like being how we are sinners and under God’s eternal judgment while other passage give the sense that we have eternal life because of Jesus we accept both because God’s Word teaches both Law and Gospel. Some parts show us our sin others show us our Savior.

You can’t go very far in scriptures without getting the sense that we have lived contrary to God’s Law and you can’t go very far either without God giving his promise of salvation through the Messiah. Throughout scripture we read that God sends Jesus to be our Savior. If you miss that you got something wrong. Most people don’t miss the part about failing and falling short of God’s design. What people miss is how much God wants them to return to him through repentance and faith.

“They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.” Amen.
