Time never stands still -By Harvey Mackay “How do you explain the relativity of time?” the professor was asked.

“Well,” she replied, “if I am rushing to catch a plane, and the check-in clerk is so slow that I miss my flight, the extra two minutes don’t mean much to him but they sure make a difference to me.

That’s relativity.”

Time is one gift that we are all given equally. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. The only variable is how many years we each have.

And that alone is reason enough to make every minute count.

Have you ever wondered where all your time goes?

The average person spends seven years in the bathroom, six years eating, four years cleaning house, five years waiting in line, two years trying to return phone calls to people who aren’t there, three years preparing meals, one year searching for misplaced items and six months waiting at red lights.

That’s nearly 30 years and doesn’t include a lot of what you might need or want to do. That’s why prioritizing your time should be a top priority.

February is National Time Management Month, a perfect time to develop a plan to ensure everything you do is moving you in the direction of your goals and limiting the distractions that prevent you from realizing them. Do a quick audit of your day to

consider whether you’re working hard or smart.

I’m a time management freak, so anything I can do to save time is important to me. That includes returning phone calls at the end of the day, being specific in leaving messages when I’m available to prevent telephone tag, calling ahead to confirm an appointment and even the best place to park to get going quickly. Time is money. I can get more money, but I can’t get more time.

The best advice, don’t waste time.

Benjamin Franklin said, “If we take care of the minutes, the years will take care of themselves.” One minute doesn’t seem like much; however, never underestimate the cumulative effect of each minute we live.

Let’s suppose, a minute is worth one penny. You see a penny lying on the street but pass it by because it is hardly worth the effort of leaning over to pick it up. But if you double that penny every day for a month, at the end of 31 days you would have 536,870,912 pennies. Translated into dollars, that’s $5,368,709.12.

The value we place on each minute of every day will have a cumulative impact on the remainder of our lives. Maybe that’s why Franklin also said, “Waste neither time, nor money, but make the best use of both.”

Peter Drucker, the late management guru, said, “Time is the scarcest resource, and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed.

“Everything requires time,” he added.

“It is the only truly universal condition. All work takes place in time and uses up time.

Yet most people take for granted this unique, irreplaceable and necessary resource.”

spending time with his family. He did a little arithmetic and figured the average person lives about 75 years. He multiplied 75 times 52 and came up with 3,900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person will live. With his age, he figured if he lived to age 75, he would have 1,000 Saturdays left, so he went to a toy store and bought 1,000 marbles and went home and put them in a large jar.

Every Saturday after that he took one marble out and threw it away. He found that watching the marbles diminish helped him really focus on the important things in life.

There’s nothing like trying to gauge your time here on earth to get your priorities straight. When every minute is precious, you learn to use them to the fullest. As humorist Bob Murphey said, “The only person to succeed while horsing around is a bookie.”

A little boy, late for school, asked God to help him get there on time. He ran, stumbled and breathlessly said, “God, I asked you to help me, but don’t push me.”

Don’t let your time push you. Take the time to manage your time.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Early times on the farm

Last week I received a letter from one of my readers telling about some of his experiences growing up on a farm near St. Wendell, Minn.

The experiences he shared interested me, along with bringing back a few memories of my own. He is currently retired and is now 86.

He recalled the difficulties of living in a house with no insulation, no furnace, no electricity and no plumbing or running water.

To solve the problem of freezing in the dirt floor basement, horse manure was piled around the house as a guard against the cold.

This solution was obvious to the nose when the manure thawed in the spring. However the potatoes and jars of canned food did not freeze.

There were two wood-burning stoves in the house, one was a wood heating stove in the center of the living room and a wood cook stove in the kitchen. Both stoves had a rather short burning time, so if someone forgot to fire up the house cooled down quickly. Wood was free and plentiful, requiring physical

energy and time for it’s preparation. At that time there was only hand powered tools, such as a crosscut saw, malls, wedges, axes and the horse power to pull the sleighs from the woods to the home. In a day, two people could cut enough wood to keep the house warm for a week. This was very economical, when compared to today, when you need gas for the chain saw and the pickup to get you and the wood to and from the woods. However, today the same amount of time will probably produce 6 times as much firewood, to be put into a stove with 2 times longer burn time.

The well was located in the pasture and needed to be brought to the house in 10 gallon cans and to the livestock in 50 gallon barrels, of course the water was pumped by hand and the containers were again pulled on a sleigh by the horses. The box on the sleigh was probably the same one used to clean the gutters in the barn. The cows in the barn were probably given water from a pail twice per day. I’m sure that some of us can remember the chopping and heating of the water tank for the outside stock cattle to give them water. The pigs were often fed with water or skim-milk heated on the cook stove having ground feed and potatoes added to it. It was warm and the pigs really appreciated it. But again we can remember that pigs appreciate virtually any kind of food at any time.

By Sherry Kutter Dear Neighbors, I am responding to a letter that was in another local paper last week. I think you will understand. Yes. We lost a Pro-Life President but did he really care about the lives of children? Or adults? Have we been tricked by Trump? Or have we been used as just another political tool? Like many politicians Mr. Trump appealed to our kind, compassionate Christian hearts. Recall that he recently authorized the killing of many inmates on death row, among them a mentally ill woman who had been seriously abused and traumatized as a young child and throughout her life.

Once Mr. Trump got our vote he gave massive tax cuts to corporations and the very wealthy and supported our $28 billion dollar weapons industry that is responsible for killing millions of innocent lives throughout the world. I guess it’s ok to kill as long as we make money. Then Mr. Trump cut services and aid to the poor. In America, the richest country in the world, we have 18 MILLION hungry children. It appears that our compassion and kindness stops cold once a child is out of the womb. Then it’s someone else’s responsibility or fault.

Perhaps it’s time we prove our true Christian kindness and compassion by car-

ing for the suffering children and adults already living in our country. What steps could we take to start this? President Biden has committed to helping the millions of hungry, sick and poverty stricken among us. He has committed to leading with truth, ethics and compassion. These beautiful values of Christ have been missing from our leadership for four years.

It’s important to note that when a young woman decides that she wants family planning options or even an abortion she is admitting that she doesn’t have the emotional, financial or moral support needed to raise a child.

Over 690 million people went to bed hungry last night. That’s almost 9 percent of the world population.

Again, it’s time we prove the richness of our Christian hearts and care for our suffering neighbors and children. Without this commitment how can we justify telling other people who may not share our religious views how to live and what to do with their bodies?

What if all Christians and churchyards had signs in their yards to “Love Your Neighbor”, “Do Not Lie”, “Do Not Judge”?

If it changed a single heart it would be worth it.

methods. Some stock tanks were placed in a hand made wooden framework filled with sawdust along with a cover over part of the top. Others made a fire under the tank to heat the water. There were also those that put wood in an iron box placed in the tank into which a fire was started to heat the water.

I can remember the 2 foot deep water tank being frozen almost to the bottom. This was during the time when 20 below was the typical temperature.

Hay was usually stored in the haymow. (the 2nd story of the barn). It was a big pile of hay that had been piled up there up to 6 months ago. It had settled into an almost solid pile of foliage. Pulling hay loose to be pushed down the chute to the cows was quite a job. The hay was often moved to the hay

Night-time in the haymow was totally dark, so after you found the fork, you felt your way around to get to your destination. If there were any braces or rafters in your path, your first meeting with them would cause you to remember their locations during the next travels through the area.

Lois M. Schanhaar

Lois M. Schanhaar, age 98, of Melrose, received her angel wings, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at CentraCare Melrose Care Center, Melrose, Minnesota.

Lois Mae Buttweiler, the oldest of 5 children, was born November 2, 1922 in Melrose, Minnesota to Paul and Beata (Hofmann) Buttweiler.

Lois told many stories about her happy, active childhood growing up in Melrose along the north bank of the Sauk River. She had a beautiful singing voice and in high school was often asked to sing solos at weddings. Her first job was as a secretary for the Rural Electric Association in Melrose. She left that job and travelled to Burbank, California where her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Leo “Bart” Schanhaar was stationed in the Army. They were united in marriage on June 20, 1942. They returned to Melrose when Bart assumed ownership of his father’s business, the Swany White Bakery, where Lois assisted as the bookkeeper.

Family was her top priority. She focused on caring for their 5 children and home. She was an excellent cook, who enjoyed hosting many dinner parties. She was a skilled seamstress, a talented bridge player, and an above average golfer. She loved spending time knitting and reading. She especially delighted in summers at the cabin on Big Birch Lake

hosting family, friends and lots of extra kids, and enjoying water sports such as swimming and water skiing. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Women, Daughters of Isabella, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101. During the 1990s, Lois was a beloved volunteer teachers’ aide at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Melrose.

Survivors include her children, Sharon (John) Rose of Melrose, MN; Paul (Marilyn) Schanhaar of Deer River, MN, Mary Kay (John) Welle of Granger, IN, Tom (Deb Knutson) Schanhaar of Rosemount, MN, and Sara (Paul) Hoeschen of Sauk Centre, MN, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Albers of St. Cloud, MN. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Schanhaar on April 5, 1989; parents, Paul and Beata (Hofmann) Buttweiler; brothers, Eugene Buttweiler and Paul Buttweiler, Jr.; sister, Aurea Goerger; and special friend, David Bergmann.

Lois will be remembered as a woman who was the epitome of love, graciousness and generosity. She was always ready for fun whether planned or spontaneous. She warmed the hearts of family and friends with her genuine compassion for and interest in them.

There was always a hug ready, and if you knew her well you would get a pair of her hand knit slippers to warm your feet. She lived a long, full, and meaningful life. Lois was loved by many.

Family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.

A private Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose at a later date.

Norma J. Karasch

Norma J. Karasch, age 78 of Sauk Centre passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 21, 2021, at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, January 27 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Norma Jean Gamradt was born on December 14, 1942, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, to Gerhard and Edith (Farrow) Gamradt. As the eldest of eight children, growing up on the family’s dairy farm, Norma quickly learned the true meaning of hard work and careful value of all that she had and earned. These were values she took forward throughout life.

At the age of 10, Norma contracted polio and was sent to the Sister Kenny Institute in Minneapolis for treatment. She was fortunate to receive Sister Kenny’s revolutionary polio treatment of hot pads and gentle exercise to fight polio’s paralysis. When she returned home, she put her hard work ethic and determination into fighting her way back to health. However, she often thought she did have some life-long effects from the disease.

Norma’s job in the barn was to carry buckets of milk and pour them into the separator. While she was working, she came to know the funloving, charismatic, Raymond J. Karasch (often Ray J to her) who was working for her dad. It wasn’t long before there was a lot of flirting going on over the Gamradt supper table. They soon were dating and were married on October 17, 1961 in Sauk Centre.

Norma and Ray always enjoyed a close circle of friends that they played with, danced with, sang with, and cried with. Norma always cherished her friends, and they were the centerpieces of her life, living out the true definition of “life-long friendships.”

In 1964 they welcomed their first son, Lyle Raymond. A year or so later, they bought their house at 927 South Ash Street in Sauk Centre where they welcomed their daughter, Kimberly Marie and later sons, Daryl Gerhard, and Mitchell Allen. After Kim was born, Norma became a fulltime homemaker, always putting the love and care of her family before herself. She used her creativity to sew her children’s clothing, her work ethic to plant and harvest the huge garden that she and Ray planted every year. She canned pickles, tomato juice, fruit, and froze many a vegetable.

She used her tomato juice to make spaghetti sauce that was the best in town.

In time Norma welcomed her children’s spouses into the fold and was thrilled to become a grandmother and great grandmother. Her sense of humor and fun-loving attitude was put to good use with her grandkids. She especially enjoyed water fights with them and showering them with monster cookies and seasoned pretzels.

Norma and Ray were masters at hospitality.

They invited everyone in to sit at the kitchen table where they shared food, drink, and stories.

Norma would often say, “If this table could talk, oh the stories it would tell!” They loved to have friends over to play cards at their table too. Their card games were an ongoing rivalry between them, with Ray giving “signals” to unsuspecting partners and Norma recognizing those signals and sometimes using them to her advantage.

Through the years, Norma was always at the center of her Gamradt family, loving them and showering them with gifts from her antique store or garage sale finds, and special gifts of her creativity and talents. She made graduation quilts for her nieces and nephews, and lap robes, wall

Kirt R. Grimli

Kirt R. Grimli, 46, of Burtrum passed away January 20, 2021 at the North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, MN. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie.

Kirt was born February 4, 1974 to Clarence, Jr. and Ann (Gunkel) Grimli in South St. Paul where he was raised and graduated from high school. He went on to complete a two-year automotive tech program at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, MN. He worked as an auto technician at various places.

In 1995 he moved to Burtum, MN on Big Swan Lake. Kirt enjoyed 4-wheeling but he really loved the simple life of spending time on the pontoon fishing.

Survivors include his mother Ann Grimli of Burtrum; his sister Kristy Brown (fiancé Stuart Wood) of South St. Paul; an uncle Gary Gunkel; nephews Nathan and Kevin Gunkel and; 1 great niece and 1 great nephew all of Brainard, MN. He is preceded in death by his father Clarence Grimli Jr., grandparents Lena and Russell Gunkel and Emma and Clarence Grimli, SR.

Norma loved the Lord and leaned on her Christian faith. Whether prayers or songs of thanksgiving and praise or help and guidance through life’s challenges, Norma took it to the Lord in prayer. She prayed with her family, but she also spent a great deal of time praying by herself. She had many things she took to the Lord.

Norma loved music. She played piano, organ, and accordion proficiently, she loved to sing, dance, and listen to all kinds of music. In the car, she loved to listen to a good CD and would often say, “Play that again.” She was a wonderful co-pilot on trips to see family and friends.

Norma is survived by her loving husband, Ray; her children: Lyle (Tracy) Karasch of Sauk Centre, their daughters, Katey Karasch and Josie (fiance’ Chad Schaefer) Karasch, Victoria (Bradly) Becker and Melissa (Dylan) Carpenter; Kimberly Flowers-Wink (Bryan Wink) of Alexandria, her children Max (Courtny) Flowers, AJ Flowers and Grace Wink; Daryl (Sheila) Karasch of Sauk Centre, their children Daniel (fiancé Bridget), Dereck (Samantha), Haley Struss and Grant Struss; and Mick (Deb) Karasch and Amanda Karasch (Andy) Myers and Amanda (Stephan) Hafften; 13 great grandchildren with one on the way; brothers and sisters, Dave (Sharon) Gamradt, Allen (Judy) Gamradt, Linda Kohorst, Sandra (Tom) Zehrer, Julie (Randy) Gamradt Reuter, Jim (Brenda) Gamradt, Mike (Boni) Gamradt and many loving nieces and nephews.

In many ways, Norma was larger than life to all who knew her. She was smart, talented, creative, strong, loving, hard-working, stubborn (which she was proud of), thrifty, quick witted and sometimes, lovingly blunt. She will be mourned and missed by all that knew and loved her.

Bernadette J. “Bernie” Korte

Bernadette J. “Bernie” Korte, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, January 22, 2021 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 30 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating.

Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. The Mass may be livestreamed and can be viewed at the link when available. There will be no visitation prior to the Mass.

Bernadette Josepha Middendorf was born November 25, 1930 in Melrose, Minnesota. She was one of seven children of Fred and Theresia (Hiltner) Middendorf. She was united in marriage

to Frederick “Fred” Korte on September 25, 1952 at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

Bernie was a dedicated housewife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who worked at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Mothers. Bernie loved her family, cooking, and making desserts.

Survivors include her son and daughterin-law, James and Carol Korte of St. Cloud; granddaughters, Lori (Rick) Laudenbach, Debbie (Mitch) Wellman, and Lisa (Jeff) Bullert; five great grandchildren, Alexis and Cassie, Samantha, Lucas and Jameson; brothers and sisters, Helen Jacobs, Donna Tiemann, John (Mary Jane) Middendorf, and Eugene (Mary Ann) Middendorf.

Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Korte on September 30, 2016; parents, Fred and Theresia Middendorf; and sisters, Selestine Korte-Power and Mary Ann Worms-Kent.

Memorials are preferred to Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta.

Duane L. Christian Sr.

later divorced in 1989. Duane met Lynn Deboer in 1991, and the couple has been together ever since. After retirement he made his home in Remer, MN. Duane was a quiet man, with a great sense of humor, and a helping soul. He enjoyed the outdoors, four wheeling, camping, fishing, cribbage, and agate hunting. Duane loved dogs and animals. Visiting the Remer Pub was one of his favorite past times.

Preceded in death by parents; his daughter Brenda Lee; and seven siblings.

Duane is survived by his finance’, Linda “Lynn” Deboer; daughter, Joyce (Brad) Christian-Jarvi; sons, Duane “Chris” (Holly), Daniel (Heather) Christian, and Travis Denk; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A visitation will be on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Northland Alliance Church in Remer, followed by a 11:00 AM Memorial Service at the church with Rev. Jason Schafbuch.

Theresa M. Purkat

Nicholas and Theresa enjoyed traveling, fishing, dancing, playing cards, watching movies, Harley rides and cooking together. A bike trip to the Black Hills and a honeymoon trip to Montana provided fond memories. Theresa had many great opportunities to travel and enjoy life. A mission trip to Guatemala with a church group was the first of many trips she took with her mother. Theresa and her Mom also ventured to Hawaii, Alaska, New York City and Washington D.C. She was a great planner, always looking for the best deals and the most exciting places to visit. Theresa enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, hiking and playing cribbage. These were only a few of her numerous hobbies. On August 22, 2018, an operation was performed to remove a brain tumor. The results from this procedure presented challenges for Theresa. She most always appeared cheerful but struggled at times with not being able to accomplish all her goals and fulfill her greatest desires. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 24th. She will be remembered for her loving and generous heart, big beautiful smile and great sense of humor. She will also be remembered for being the world’s greatest cribbage player with a record of winning more than 150 games in a row.

Theresa was preceded in her death by her father, Larry Paul Moran.

Duane L. Christian Sr., age 74, passed away Friday, January 22, 2021 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN surrounded by his children.

Duane was born in Palisade, MN to Daniel and Doras Christian. He was one of eight children, and the last surviving. He graduated from Atkin High School and then was drafted into the Army where he was stationed in Alaska. He was honorably discharged and married Brenda Mae Karnes. They moved to Minnesota in 1970.

Burial will take place at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 PM at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Parish Prayers at 7 PM. Theresa Michelle Moran was born July 16, 1979 to Larry and Joyce (Erdman) Moran in Little Falls, MN. She grew up on the family farm north of Little Falls with her seven siblings.

Theresa graduated from Little Falls Community High School with the class of 1997. She attended Central Lakes College in Brainerd, and graduated with honors from St. Cloud State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She traveled to Honduras, where she taught for a short time.

Returning home, she began teaching in Staples, MN. A few years later, she accepted a position at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Pierz. She made many great friends within that school system.

She loved her students and they loved her back.

It was an honor for her to teach and prepare the children for the sacraments. Theresa had many close friends in her lifetime. Her closest friends were known as the “usuals.” She took several trips with her friends and made many great memories.

They were adventurous and would go kayaking and skydiving. They would gather to watch football games and enjoyed a few beverages. An occasional music festival provided opportunities to deepen friendships. The usuals played a big part in the success of her benefit that took place two years ago.

In the year 2012, she met the love of her life, Nicholas Anthony Purkat. Married May 30, 2015, they eventually made their home in Burtrum in 2017. She enjoyed making their house a home.

Donald Arthur Fern

at the Veterans Administration, Fort Snelling in December 1946. Retired in October 1981 after 31 years of service. He enlisted in the 103rd Infantry Div. Army Reserve Band three years prior to the Korean outbreak. Don was never called to active duty as a reservist and received an Honorable discharge.

Don married Ruby C. Pierson on February 22, 1955. He was very active in several sporting groups. Don was a Certified Minnesota Firearms Safety Instructor since 1985. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Melrose Post 101, lifetime member of Monticello Rod & Gun Club, and an Honorary Member of the Delano Sportsmen’s Club.

Survivors include many dear cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Ruby; brothers, Robert, Vernon, Richard; and sisters, Irene Verbeke, Alyce Maahs and Rosalia Smith.

Dennis M. Koroll

Dennis farmed the Koroll family farm for all his life. While farming, his farm became a Century Farm and he was very proud of that accomplishment. In 2001, Dennis retired from milking cows and strictly raised beef cattle until 2011 when he fully retired from farming. He loved to farm and always tried to be the first one in the fields planting every spring. When Dennis wasn’t farming, he enjoyed fishing, tinkering in his garage and restoring old John Deere tractors. He also loved spending time and getting together with his friends, family, children, and grandchildren. Dennis was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Dennis is survived by children, Laura (Raoul) Paver of Long Lake, MN, Kris (Steven) Tomasko of Rogers, MN and Aaron (Angela) Koroll of Bowlus, MN; siblings, Marlene (Denis) Carlson of Elmdale, MN, David (Diane) Koroll of Little Falls, MN, Rita (Fred) Herbes of St. Francis, MN and Joy Koroll of Elmdale, MN; grandchildren, Alexa, Stella and Kaden.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Christian Mothers, and St. Theresa’s Mission. Loretta enjoyed sewing, playing cards, cooking, and enjoyed doing most anything!

Don was born October 1, 1926 in Melrose, Minnesota to parents Joseph J. and Katherine (Zenz) Fern. He graduated from Melrose High School in1944. He enlisted in the Navy August 4, 1944 and served as a radioman on the USS BOSTON CA 69. Don participated in the first bombardment of the main islands of Japan and was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 8, 1946. He was employed Dennis M. Koroll, 69 year old resident of Plymouth, MN, formerly of Bowlus, MN, passed away Monday, January 25, 2021, at Mission Farms Nursing Home in Plymouth, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Father David Grundman officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the St. Edward’s Parish Cemetery.

Loretta Mary Kemper was born January 9, 1924 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Bernadine (Austing) Kemper. Loretta wanted to go to high school but instead started working at the White Spot restaurant. She met her future husband, Al “Shorty” Didier while working at the White Spot while Shorty worked at the gas station next door.

She was united in marriage to Shorty on October 13, 1942 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed with Shorty’s family near West Union. Later, Loretta worked for the grocery store and post office in West Union.

After the couple retired and sold the farm, they moved to Sauk Centre. In 2010, Loretta moved to Freeport.

Marvin Miller

Marvin Miller, 90, of Paynesville, died Saturday, January 9, 2021, at his home from dementia under the care of Ecumen Hospice of Litchfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 16th at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville with Military Honors. Interment was in Assumption Cemetery in St. Cloud. Funeral arrangements were with Harvey Anderson and Johnson Funeral Home of Paynesville. www.hafh.org There is a recording of the Mass posted to the funeral home website Marvin was born May 31, 1930, the youngest of eight children of Anton and Margaret (Hofmann) Miller at Abercrombie, ND. After his graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served with the 25th Infantry in South Korea from 1952-1954. On June 2, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marlen Lutgen in St. Cloud.

They lived in the St. Cloud area and Brooklyn Park while Marvin worked for JCPenney’s, in the automotive division at Ridgedale and later at their Plymouth distribution center. He retired in 1993 after 28 years.

After retirement, Marvin and Marlene enjoy living at Big Fish Lake, near Cold Spring/ St. Joseph. Although he retired, Marvin couldn’t sit idly, he worked various jobs including catering for Taco Bill in St. Cloud and for The Blue Heron in Cold Spring, working until his

80th birthday. After raising two daughters, Sue and Sandi, they enjoyed traveling and volunteering at their church.

They celebrated 54 years of marriage before Marlene died on March 19, 2009. He was attending Catholic Charities support group when he met Julie Moorhead of Paynesville.

On May 28, 2011, they were married. They enjoyed nine years of married bliss, spending five winters in south Texas, near Mission, summers at the lake home and camping. They also enjoyed traveling, having made numerous trips to Europe, Canada, a mission trip to Guatemala and road trips to several including Florida, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Michigan and New Mexico.

In his early years, he enjoyed the lake, especially ice fishing with his many friends and sons-in-law. He was a supportive volunteer by assisting Julie with various activities such as music at Koronis Manor, Square Dance and Garden Club. Marvin also enjoyed his plot of produce at the community garden.

He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and a member of American Legion Post #271 of Paynesville.

Spending time with his family was by far the most important however.

Surviving are his wife, Julie; daughters, Sue (Brian) Lemke of Avon and Sandi (Scott) Andreasen of St. Joseph; Ellen Moorhead Hansen (Eric Larsen), Kirk Moorhead (Jessica Maynard), and John (Clare) Moorhead; nine grandchildren: Ross (Kelly Corona) Lemke, Scott (Brittany Schwegel) Lemke, Kyle (Justice Callahan) Lemke, and Marie (Kaden Stoeckel) Andreasen, Sam Andreasen, Serena Andreasen, Grant Andreasen, Joy (Jason) Goray, and Renae (Kelly) Imholte and 10 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 23, 2021 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Peter P. Jonas, 83, of Avon who passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Rev. Gregory Miller O.S.B. officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

Peter was born on June 29, 1937 to John Paul and Katherine (Kociemba) Jonas in St. Cloud. He married Ramona Streit on August 3, 1959 at Immaculate Conception in St. Anna. He worked as a machinist for DeZURIK for over 35 years. Peter was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic Church and proudly served our country in the United States Army. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and spending time on his hobby farm. Peter was a very outgoing, supportive and nonjudgmental person who was always willing to help. His quick wit will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his children, Marvin (Joné) Jonas of St. Cloud, Jerry of Buffalo, and Lois Wooldridge of Eden Prairie; grandchildren, Andrea (Josh) Kassen, Jonathan Wooldridge and Patrick (Samantha) Jonas; great grandchildren, Lauren, James, and Abigail; and sister, Maggie Thompson of Dana Point, CA. He is preceded in passing by his wife Ramona on January 17, 1998.

Joyce A. Schmidt, age 60 of Melrose, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A graveside service will be held at later at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating.

Joyce Alvina Schmidt was born July 31, 1960 in Melrose, Minnesota to Aloys and Dorothy (George) Schmidt. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1978. Joyce worked at the V.A Hospital in St. Cloud until her retirement.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Joyce was a wonderful musician who played multiple instruments and also played with the “Custom Classics.” She was animal lover and truly enjoyed gardening and taking an occasional fishing trip.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Schmidt of Albany; brothers, Donald (Bernice) Schmidt of Freeport, Harry (Deb) Schmidt of Grey Eagle, Ron (Becky) Schmidt of Burtrum, Cheryl (Jim) Harren of Freeport, and Dennis Schmidt of Brainerd; and many nephews and nieces who loved her very much.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Al Schmidt.

Grey Eagle City • December 8, 2020 The Truth in Taxation meeting was called to order remotely by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 6:30 p.m., on the 8th day of December 2020 in council chambers. Council members present at City Hall were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance remotely was Clerk Lori Hellmann. There were no guests.

The purpose of the meeting is to explain to residents the financial needs for the year 2021 and how that affects the levy. The levy has increased over 2020 due to the addition of a Street Restoration Levy as part of the Sewer Project. When the proposed levy was approved at the September 8, 2020 City Council meeting, the total levy was for $135,974 which included $33,862 in additional Street Restoration levy that resulted in an anticipated 30% increase over the 2020 levy.

Member Brian Hollenkamp joined the meeting at 6:45 p.m.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve a reduction in the Street Restoration Levy from $33,862 to $16,931. City funds will be used to make up the difference for 2021. This would result in an increase of 13.8% over the 2020 levy. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and a roll call vote was taken. A report from PeopleService included information that the fall discharge has been completed, and everything appears to be in good working order.

John Call reported on the following maintenance items: 1. The brush pile at the ponds was burned after obtaining a burning permit from the Forestry Service in Little Falls. Only three fourths of the pile actually burned. The pile was just too large and the leaves just wanted to smolder, causing some complaints from neighboring property owners. The council will look at doing something different before spring.

2. The John Deere snow blower finally appears to be operable.

3. Neville Hardware is out of cleaning products needed for city buildings and the library. The Clerk will pick up the needed items at Dollar General.

The Council discussed the budget and levy payable 2021. The council approved a reduction in the final Street Restoration Levy, which would lower the increase in total levy from 30% to 13.8%. City funds will be used to cover the difference for 2021.

Mayor Joe Arnzen provided the council with an update on the sewer project. The contractors started dewatering and plan on putting in the new sewer main on the south side of Highway 287. Work will also begin on the installation of the new lift station. The sewer main in the alley south of State Street between Cedar Street South and Woodman Street South was lined.

Due to the local spread of COVID 19, and for the health and safety of our City Council, Fire Department members, employees and City residents, a motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to follow the Department of Health/CDC Guidelines. A mask must be worn when entering a City business, City buildings when the building is occupied be someone, in City Hall for any meetings or gatherings of any kind, and in any City vehicle when it is occupied by more than one person. All city personnel must abide by all guidelines set forth by the Department of Health/CDC. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and a roll call vote was taken. The Clerk informed the council of potential property development on a vacant parcel of land along Highway 28 South in city limits. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp for the City Clerk to contact the City Attorney to put together a moratorium on storage sheds on vacant lots until the council has time to determine what would be in the best interest of the city and its residents. We’ve been sold on the idea of debt so aggressively that most folks don’t believe life without a pile of payments is possible.

Also, change is painful. Most people won’t change until the pain of where they are exceeds the pain of change. No matter who you are, where you’re at right now financially is, in large part, a sum total of the decisions you’ve made to this point. If you don’t like where you are, you have to acknowledge the fact that things need to change—you need to change.

Finally, there’s an element of ignorance involved. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean being dumb or stupid. What I’m talking about is a simple lack of good information.

Anyone can learn things, if they’ll just admit they don’t have all the answers and set their minds to studying and educating themselves on a topic. If you’re not careful, what you don’t know about money will make you broke and keep you broke!

Dear Motor Medics, There are so many new things on cars today.

How do you keep up with them all? I just bought a new car to me; a 2011 Ford Focus and it has a ton of new stuff on it that I have never heard of being that I just got out of my 1996 Olds Ciera. This car has no gas cap on it. I mean it’s not supposed to, but I have a message on the dash that says “Check gas cap” so now what?

-Seth in Vandalia, Missouri Dear Seth, Ok Seth, now were on question overload, but we can handle it. 1st, we don’t know how we keep up with it all, we just do.

That’s our number one asked question on our radio show Under The Hood. We have great memories and see a lot of vehicles in our shop which helps. As for the new features, they are coming out of the woodwork for sure. Your car is one of those with the new no fuel cap feature. At least you can’t lose the fuel cap. The filler tube now just has a valve and spring to seal the filler neck and if it gets dirty and damaged it can trip the light you have on now. It is particularly important to keep the area clean, we use a damp cloth, not soaking wet, to clean the area on a regular basis. Good luck with the new car.

Missing Juvenile: The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing juvenile. Alexus Rayne Norberg, 14, left her home in the City of St. Cloud on January 19 without parental permission. Her parent has not heard from her since she left. Alexus, is 5’3, 130 pounds, blue eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black tank top, white jeans, black shoes and was carrying a pink backpack. Alexus’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at 320-2514240 or their local law enforcement agency via 911.
