Mentoring: a win-win situation -By Harvey Mackay January is National Mentoring Month. M en t o r in g can change your life – and theirs. National Mentoring Month was created to raise awareness of mentoring and as a rallying point for recruiting more adults to step up and be present for young people. Mentoring means helping less experienced people observe, experiment and evaluate different ways of doing work to find out which strategies work best. And the benefits are not limited to young people. People of all ages can gain from the guidance of a more experienced person, even someone younger than you. A mentor can help even experienced managers boost their job performance and advance their careers.

I’ve had the privilege of mentoring hundreds of people over the course of my career. With some, it consisted of a few meetings. With others, the relationship lasted over months or years, with an occasional check-in when questions arose. Those are some of the most rewarding experiences of my decades in business. At the same time, I am grateful for two mentors whom I have occasionally mentioned: my University of Minnesota history professor Harold Deutsch and golf coach Les Bolstad. Both men taught me as much about life as their particular subjects. Over my business career I’ve had many great mentors. Growing up, were there people in your life who encouraged you, showed you the ropes and helped you become the person you are today? Think about individuals who offered you encouragement, shared their experiences and knowledge, and sometimes just listened when you needed to talk. Most successful people say they had mentors along the way who guided and encouraged them. For example, poet Maya Angeloucited a grade school teacher who sparked her love of poetry; music producer Quincy Jones points to the powerful influence of musician Ray Charles; and musician Sting credits a teacher whose energy inspired a lifelong passion for learning. Finding a mentor, or being a mentor, whichever situation you find yourself in, establishing the right relationship

is critical. You know how important mentoring can be to younger or inexperienced employees. But how do you know if you’re cut out to be a good mentor? Here are five key characteristics of an effective mentor: • Commitment. Are you willing to dedicate the time and effort necessary to a mentoring relationship? You should already be involved in helping employees learn new skills and develop professionally. • Courage. Do you have the courage to take risks, admit mistakes and let others do the same? You’ll have to tolerate the occasional error and use it as a learning experience, and at the same time teach your staff or co-workers how to tell the difference between a reasonable risk and an unacceptable one. • Curiosity. Are you hungry for knowledge? Don’t limit your answer to professional areas. If you’re always asking questions, trying to find out how things work and why, you’ll be a good mentor. • Compassion. Are you patient with others when they make mistakes? Do you Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 try to understand situations from the other person’s point of view? As a mentor, your job isn’t to pass judgment but to create opportunities for insight and growth in other people. • Communication. Explain what works for you and why. Telling a protégé what to do in a specific situation doesn’t really teach him or her much. You’ll be more effective if you communicate as explicitly as you can what strategies and techniques have worked best for you. After a meeting with a client, for instance, you might tell the protégé why you took the approach you did. When you are on the other side of the equation, how do you go about finding a good mentor? To find the right match, look for someone with skills similar to yours but who has progressed further up the professional ladder. They don’t even have to be in the same city. With e-mail, teleconferencing and the phone, they can be anywhere. Don’t limit yourself to one mentor. You may want to have several mentors to

help with different aspects of your life, a kind of mentoring “board of directors.” And remember, mentors change over a lifetime. Manage your time together. Be mindful of the amount of time a mentor can commit to the relationship. Ask for referrals if you feel like you’re imposing. Let your mentors know that you are grateful for their guidance. Mentoring presents a tremendous win-win opportunity that few business relationships offer. And who doesn’t want to be a winner? Mackay’s Moral: Show that you care with the knowledge you share. Sudoku

Word Search Answers from January 21

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game.

Thought for the week:

I know. I’m lazy. But I made myself a New Years resolution that I would write myself something really special. Which means I have ’til December, right? -Catherine O’Hara

After a sermon on “Hospitality Evangelism” the Harts were convinced that they should invite their unsaved neighbors to dinner. Their pastor clearly and carefully explained a process to witness God’s plan of salvation after the meal. On the night of the dinner, the host and hostess were both anxious to begin and end the evening with real-life situations and Christian standards that presented “God at work in their household.” After sitting down for dinner, Mr. Hart said to five-year-old Bruce, “Would you please say grace?”

Shy and overcome by the drama of the situation he said, “I don’t know what to say.” Naturally, there was an awkward pause while they attempted to recover from this serious setback to their strategy to witness to their neighbors. “Well, dear,” said Mrs. Hart with a forced smile, “just say what Daddy said at breakfast this morning.” Obediently, Bruce folded his hands, bowed his head and said, “Oh, God, we’ve got those horrible neighbors coming to dinner tonight.” Truth came straight from Bruce’s heart because he was filled with innocence and openness, trust and honesty. Bruce spoke the truth naturally because his heart was pure! But what about the rest of us? Do we speak the truth? Truth comes from our hearts when we have nothing to hide and our hearts are filled with God’s wisdom. David explained it this way: “You desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.” Our God is a God of truth and wants His character to be within us and flow from us. If we fill our hearts with His Word, His truth will flow from us.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Ramping Up for Relatively Brief 2016 Session Even though the next legislative session doesn’t begin until March 8, the number of meetings is already ramping up. There is a general feeling that, because the session will be so short (11 weeks), we need to get as much of the introductory work done beforehand as possible. I have scheduled a series of town hall meetings for this Saturday, Jan. 30. Meetings will be in Glenwood, Sauk Centre, and Melrose. Following are the times and locations for Saturday, January 30: • Glenwood, 8:30 a.m. Central Square, Suite 111, 105 2nd Ave. N.E. • Sauk Centre, 10:30 a.m. Lynx National Golf Course clubhouse, S. Highway 71 at 40204 Primrose Lane • Melrose, 1:30 p.m. Melrose City Center, 225 First St. N.E. Residents are invited to attend any one of these sessions to hear an update on legislative activity, in addition to sharing with me their thoughts and ideas. I look forward to visiting with you on Saturday. My staff is also in the process of scheduling additional town hall meetings the following week. We will have information on those gatherings when details are finalized.

In addition, an “Ag Issues Roundtable” will be held in Alexandria next month, on Feb. 9. We will hear reports on topics such as Farm Business Management, Avian Influenza, and farm safety, among others. The location will be the Alexandria Technical and Community College. More details on that event as the date gets closer. It would appear that we will not be called back for a special session. As the date of the regular session draws closer, the need to be called back immediately is diminished. In addition, several of the items up for discussion for possible inclusion in a special session are not that easily decided. Previous special sessions I’ve been involved with have been for a single topic, usually storm damage, where there was general agreement. In addition, with the deadline for compliance concerning federal ID standards being pushed back two years, the need for immediate action on that topic has been taken away. See you this Saturday in Glenwood, Sauk Centre, or Melrose! Rep. Anderson can be contacted by email at rep.paul.anderson@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-4317. To receive email updates sign-up on his webpage at www.house.mn/13a.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My husband was laid off a month ago from a job making $80,000 a year. We have no debt except our house payment. We owe about $82,000 on it, but it’s valued at approximately $300,000. We’ve also got an emergency fund of $30,000, and I work part-time making about $2,000 a month while he collects unemployment and looks for another job. Do you think we should sell our home? We’ve also got a boat that’s worth about $18,000 we could sell. -Sheila Dear Sheila, The first thing I want you to do is take a step back and breathe. Yes, you guys just hit a big bump in the road. But the good news is you’re in pretty good shape financially to handle things for a while. At this point, I’d strongly recommend selling the boat over selling the house. Boats are a lot easier to replace than nice homes, and the process isn’t nearly as traumatic on the family. You can also dip into your emergency fund a little bit, but for the next little while you need to make sure you’re living on a really tight, bare bones budget. I’d love to see you not have to touch the emergency fund, because he’s gone out and found at least a part-time position while he’s searching for something in his field. I know that’s tough to do once you’ve gotten used to making $80,000, but there are jobs out there that will help you guys get through this. As long as he’s being diligent in seeking a new job, and you’re budgeting and watching what you spend together, I think for now you should keep the house. God bless you both! -Dave

Pick Your Day & Time!

Dear Dave, Do you recommend having people keep their W2 numbers as close to their tax return numbers as possible, even if they might have to pay at the end of the year or have more taken out? Every year I get a big tax return. But after listening to you I began to think that if I did a better job of planning I would have more money throughout the year. -Charlie Dear Charlie, I like your thinking, and you’re absolutely right. That’s exactly what I recommend people do when it comes to their income taxes. Of course, you don’t want to have to pay out a big chunk of cash. But a little number crunching and planning ahead of time can help you avoid those kinds of situations. You really don’t want a big refund, and here’s why. If you get a fat tax refund every year, all it means is you’ve loaned money to the government interest-free for the entire year. Then, at the end of the year they gave it back to you. Some people seem to think Santa Claus has shown up when this happens, and that’s completely wrong. You’ve had too much taken out of your check every payday during the previous year, and then you got it back. Try to adjust your W2 so that you are hitting within $100 or so at the end of the year. Then you’ll have more of your own money in your own pocket throughout the entire year! -Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. CentraCare Health Foundation announces its $2.5 million Building a Healthy Community capital campaign stretch goal has been surpassed with a $100,000 gift from Dan’s Prize Inc. The capital campaign, which began in April 2014, had an initial goal of $2 million to support the new CentraCare Health-Long Prairie medical campus building project. “At Dan’s Prize, we take great pride in supporting the communities where we have operations,” said Jeffrey M. imum $2 million goal, but surpassed even the stretch goal of $2.5 million speaks to the generosity of the community. I am so impressed with the energy this small community has put into the Building a Healthy Community capital campaign, as well as, other new initiatives in Long Prairie. This support makes it possible for us to continue to provide the best health care possible and meet the growing needs of the people in our area,” said Brad Konkler, vice president of philanthropy, CentraCare Health. “When we started this campaign, our minimum goal of $2 million seemed like a long way away, but in the end the response from CentraCare Health employees, individuals, businesses and organizations came together to support this transformation of health care in our community. We received gifts from $1 to $500,000, and every one of them is important. Words cannot express how grateful we are to the donors for their contributions. The CentraCare Health employees and volunteers and the Long Prairie community have gone above and beyond to make this project a reality,” said Dan Swenson, administrator, CentraCare

Health-Long Prairie. CentraCare Health-Long Prairie’s new 65,000 sq. ft., $25 million medical campus will replace the existing 60-year-old facility and better serve the rural community by: • Improving access to care and offering a wider array of services for patients. • Providing ample space for improved technology and visiting specialists. • Helping retain and recruit qualified physicians and staff. • Positioning CentraCare Health- Long Prairie as a model health care campus offering an innovative continuum of care in a rural setting. Construction on the new medical campus will begin this spring with expected completion in the summer of 2017. As the project moves into the construction phase, fundraising efforts will continue to support pieces of the project that wouldn’t be possible without the generosity the community. For information or to make a donation, contact Nicole Bjerke, CentraCare Health Foundation development officer at 320732-7337.
