Earlier this month I was privileged to play golf with another links hero of mine, Jack Nicklaus, regarded as the greatest golfer of all time. He won 73 PGA tournaments, including a record 18 major championships. We played his home course – The Bear’s Club in Florida – and I was a sponge as I soaked up his golf wisdom.

I asked Jack about his tremendous success, especially in making crucial tournament-winning putts. He thought about it for a bit and said, “I never missed a putt in my mind.”

Jack Nicklaus is not considered to be the best at hitting his woods, long or short irons, or even chipping and putting. But almost everyone considers him the greatest thinking golfer of all time. He had no equal at the mental part of the game, which makes up 50 percent of competitive golf.

As an example, golf great Ben Hogan stood over a crucial putt.

Suddenly a loud train whistle blared in the distance. After he had sunk the putt, someone asked Hogan if the train whistle had bothered him.

“What whistle?” Hogan replied.

Jack said: “Concentration is a fine antidote to anxiety. I have always felt that the sheer intensity Ben Hogan applied to the shot-making specifics was one of his greatest assets. It left no room in his mind for negative thoughts.

The busier you can keep yourself with the particulars of shot assessment and execution, the less chance your mind has to dwell on the emotional ‘if’ and ‘but’ factors that breed anxiety.”

Nicklaus put great effort into preparation. I can’t think of another golfer who was better prepared. He would often arrive at a tournament a week early to study the course, prepare mentally and relax. He always kept his focus on the game.

We discussed how much you can learn about a person when you play golf with them. The game tends to expose your real character. One study found 47 percent of those surveyed believed that behavior on the golf course usually paralleled behavior in business. It tests your fortitude, your confidence and your humility.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Happenings Sometimes I find myself wondering what subject would be interesting for my readers. I sit back and try to mentally relive my life experiences.

Some of them seem so ordinary that they wouldn’t be of interest to anyone. Some are so dumb that I am hesitating to talk about them.

Dumb things include the time I built my first sling-shot. I went out to the woods and found part of a hazel-bush stem that appeared to be the right size and a perfect Y to do the job. When I got home Pa said it would do the job if I was shooting elephants. He suggested that I take my jack-knife and remove the bark and some of the outside wood layers to make it less bulky. He also suggested groves on both tips to hold the strips of rubber cut from an old tire tube. I then found an old shoe to cut a pouch for the rocks I would be shooting. After many adjustments to the length of the rubber strips, the weapon was actually quite accurate. I was imagining the squirrels and gophers I would gather.

The first hunt included collecting a

pocket-full of ammunition and making sure that Shep was ready to be a part of the big experience. Somehow that day the squirrels were hiding in their secure hiding places. The gophers all hid in their holes and the chipmunks somehow avoided the small stones headed their way. Frustrated, I saw a paper-hornet nest about 75 feet away. It was about 4 feet from the ground and appeared to be an ideal target. I put a couple of shots through the nest, causing the bees to become very agitated. Shep felt that he should investigate what I was shooting at and became covered with stinging bees. After he vainly tried to wipe the bees from his head and nose, he came over to me for help, of course he brought the bees with him. I started running and he followed. The result was multiple stings to both of us. Not the successful hunt I had envisioned.

In my adult years, I purchased a factory-made sling-shot that was advertised to be fast and accurate. I found that the sling-shot of my youth was maybe not as fast, but it was much more accurate. I wish I had saved it so I could hang it in my office as a conversation starter.

Then there was the old sled. Our drive-way had a gradual downhill slant, which made it an ideal sledding opportunity. There was a pile of steer hay bales by the barn. I decided that if I shoveled a path through the snow, I

from phones, meetings or competitors, for that matter? And no one knows this better than Jack.

If you’re making a key hire or closing a business deal, the golf course is an ideal test because you see how people act in all kinds of circumstances.

You can take note of their appearance, how they carry themselves and how well they follow the etiquette and rules of the game – even if they know how to have fun. And remember, they can see how you handle yourself as well!

Jack joked that most people work their entire lives so they can play golf in retirement, whereas he played golf most of his life so he could retire to work. His Nicklaus Design company has opened more than 400 courses in 42 countries around the world.

Nicklaus is also a big believer in philanthropy and volunteerism. He and his terrific wife, Barbara, who entertained our group for dinner at their home, have raised tens of millions of dollars for the hugely impactful Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, which provides families access to world-class pediatric health care.

Those activities illustrate his priorities in life: 1) Family, 2) Golf and 3) Business. He skipped a lot of tournaments because of family activities.

his kids and be back the next day to tee off.

One final point I found interesting.

When Jack was giving me a putting lesson, he told me that Barbara devoted 40 years to his life in golf. Now it is his turn to devote the next 40 years to her life. Family really is #1 with Jack Nicklaus.

could let the sled be stopped by running into the bale pile. It worked great. The point of the sled went about a foot into the bales. One evening, I don’t know why, but I put out my arm to stop myself before I hit the bales. The result was a sharp pain in my lower arm. Mother took me to the local doctors office, who did an X-ray and it showed a broken arm. He and my Mother were having a conversation about a happening at school, when the doctor said, “I should look at your arm.” He then put one hand on my elbow and the other on my wrist.

He gave a sharp tug and I felt my knees getting weak. The arm was set and I was put in a cast from hand to shoulder.

Since it really didn’t cause a great deal of pain, I wasn’t as careful as I should be and it took 5 days to break the cast.

The new cast had a brace from wrist to shoulder, so with it and strong words from my parents made the cast remain

serviceable for 6 weeks. The only positive result of this dumb experience was that I learned to become able to use a fork and spoon with my left hand, both for eating and scratching under the cast.

Dumb things. I’m sure that you are able to remember some things that you remember from your younger years, but usually not telling others about them.

Things like going up the silo to pull up the blower pipes and not saying anything to anyone about how scared you were looking down into the deep hole on one side and hoping that the silo ladder was secure on the other side. Timothy D. “Tim” Kircher, age 58 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully Monday, January 21, 2019 at his home near Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 26 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Grey Eagle with Kali Christensen officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home in Grey Eagle.

Timothy Douglas Kircher was born March 15, 1960 in Melrose, Minnesota to Douglas and Marlys (Marty) Kircher.

Tim worked as an IR Technician at Arvig Communications for 34 years. He loved

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Immaculate Conception in St. Anna for Alfred S. Molus, 98, of Albany who passed away peacefully on Saturday. Burial will be at the parish cemetery with full military honors by the Holdingford American Legion Post #211. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Alfred was born on May 8, 1920 in St. Anna to Frank and Margaret (Skaj) Molus.

He married Eleanor Solarz on May 13, 1950 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Opole. He worked on the family farm for his entire life until retiring in 1988. He also served on the Avon Township Board

He loved to be outdoors. Tim enjoyed mowing the lawn, gardening and canning, pan fishing, hunting and processing his own meats. Tim never missed an opening day for deer hunting. He also had two cats, which he loved.

in the 1970s. Alfred was a member of Immaculate Conception in St. Anna. He was proud of his age but was prouder to be a veteran. He served in the Army during World War II and in 2015 Alfred had the honor of attending a Freedom Flight in Washington DC. Alfred deeply loved his family. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always curious as to what everyone was doing. He enjoyed playing cards, sitting in the lawn chair, being outside, tinkering in the garage and telling war stories. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Alfred is survived by his children, Patti (Charlie) Berscheid of Avon, Mary (Gerry) Heitzman of Holdingford, Brenda (Herb) Blonigen of Avon and Sherri (Brian) Sand of Albany; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanor; daughter, Shirley; brother, George; sisters Genevieve Ganz and Lorraine Koska.

We’ve written and called the credit card companies, and we’re disputing the charges, but is there anything else we can do to protect ourselves and put an end to this?

-Ken Dear Ken, You bet there is! File a police report immediately, and if possible, have this guy arrested. He has committed criminal fraud, and it’s not something you should take lightly. Also, put a fraud victim alert on your credit bureau reports today.

Don’t stop with just alerting the credit card companies about this situation. You should be speaking with and communicating via email—plus snail mail, if necessary—directly with the fraud victim division at every credit card company involved. Make sure they understand this is a denial of responsibility and not simply a dispute.

Let them know you’re sorry this happened, but explain that all these charges in your names are the result of a criminal act perpetrated against you. You may have to stand your ground with the credit card companies, because some of them might try to get you to pay it, anyway. Don’t do it!

-Brianne Dear Brianne, I’m sure this seems like a winning proposition all the way around. My concern is there’s a big spiritual and emotional issue that has been left out of the equation. The borrower is always slave to the lender, and nowhere is that more true than in a family.

I understand, too, you have a solid track record with this kind of thing. But anytime you borrow money from family you’re playing with fire. When you do something like this, especially with such a large amount, the money issue is likely to be a shadow hovering over your relationship. Family get togethers, special events, and holidays will feel different when you’re there with your lender instead of just good old dad.

I assume your father-in-law is doing well financially, since he can afford to make this offer. And don’t get me wrong, it’s a very kind and generous offer. If I were in his shoes, I might offer instead to pay off the mortgage as a gift to my son and daughter-in-law for working so hard to attain a goal. But it would be a gift. No strings attached.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Highlighting how federal farm bill impacts us in Minnesota After a round of member introductions, committees in the Minnesota House are getting updated by the various departments in state government as to their status.

Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture Andrea Vaubel last Thursday told members of the Ag. Committee how the new farm bill just passed

by Congress could impact Minnesota farmers. She described the 12 different titles in the $867 billion piece of legislation, which directs 80 percent of its total funding to nutrition programs.

Of note is a long-awaited increase in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres. The ceiling has been increased to 27 million acres, up from its current level of 24 million. In addition, payment on those new acres will be reduced somewhat, with amounts based on county average crop rental rates. There was discussion in our committee about the state adding to those payment rates, to bring them more in line with payments in the old farm bill. I would need to study that proposal more closely before supporting it because of criticism of the old payment rates. In certain areas, especially to our south, CRP payment rates were higher than the going rate paid by farmers for cropland. It was thought by some that those higher CRP rates took good farmland out of production and made it difficult for beginning farmers to rent land to start farming.

Also of interest in the new farm bill is language pertaining to industrial hemp. Related to marijuana and on the list of dangerous drugs put forth by the federal government, hemp has been removed from that list and appears to

have a much clearer path to becoming a crop raised by farmers once again. It had been grown experimentally in the past few years, and had been tried by a few Minnesota farmers. Officials at the Ag. Dept. are seeing more interest in the crop as a result of language in the new farm bill. There were 40 applications to grow industrial hemp in 2018, and already there are 110 for the upcoming year. Another major stumbling block to widespread growth and processing of industrial hemp had been the federal ban on using our banking system to finance such operations. Up to this point, all transactions had to be done on a cash basis and getting loans was not allowed.

With the new farm bill, these restrictions have been removed.

Our sympathies to the family of George Borgerding, longtime banker from Belgrade, who passed away last week at the age of 91. Following his graduation from St. John’s University, George returned home to work in the bank founded by his grandfather. In the early 1950’s when the Korean War broke out, he enlisted in the US Air Force.

George received his pilot’s wings and flew fighter planes during his time in the service.

George cared deeply for the people of the area. He was well known for his integrity, generosity, and a strong work ethic. George was a good friend, and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Also said good bye last week to a neighbor and friend who served his country during the Vietnam War. Larry Erickson was 71 years old and served our country as a soldier during the height of the conflict in Vietnam in the late 1960’s. He became something of a national celebrity on his 22nd birthday when a photo of him blowing out candles on a makeshift birthday cake while on patrol was picked up by the Associated Press and circulated world-wide. As happens all too often with our returning

He has consistently been on the honor roll since 7th grade. He was also class

secretary in 7th and 8th grade. This fall, Smieja participated in the fall cleanup through his AVID class.

Outside of school, Smieja enjoys hunting, fishing, and driving four wheeler. He also enjoys playing games. He mows and maintains his neighbors yards as well.

Smieja says his favorite class is band because he likes to play the trombone. He says math is his most valuable class because he believes he will use many of the skills learned in the future.

Smieja says he currently does not know what he will do after high school.

His advice to his classmates is ”Be nice to others and work hard to achieve your goals.”

Upsala Junior High Student of the Month

The Upsala staff are proud to announce Jacob Gunderson as November Junior High Student of the Month. Gunderson is the seventh grade son of Alan and Tina Gunderson. His siblings are Daniel, Katie, and Derek.

Gunderson plays basketball and baseball. He also participates in track.

He was chosen as 7th grade class president this year.

Dear Motor Medics, You guys make it easy for us when we need to repair our cars and I’m hoping you can shed a little light on a purchase question too. I have narrowed down my search to two vehicles that are relatively the same except that one is a front-wheel drive while the other is all-wheel drive. The AWD drive vehicle has 10,000 more miles but has the extra feature so it is priced the same. I don’t see a lot of snowfalls in my area and until now have managed to get by every season with nothing more than a FWD car. If I go with the all-wheel drive system will fuel mileage suffer significantly, and will the overall maintenance cost be a lot higher?

-David in Manhattan, Kansas Dear David, You will have to make your own decision as you will be the one making the purchase but we can hopefully help you a bit. All-wheel drive vehicles get around better in the snow than their front-wheel drive counterparts, but if you are in an area that does not see much snow or ice and they plow it quickly, do you really need it? The fuel mileage will be a little lower, there will be slightly faster tire wear, and there are more parts to wear out. While the front-wheel drive is not as nimble in snow, a lot of people give that up for the savings they gain in other areas.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I recently purchased a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with about 130k miles on it equipped with the 3.1 engine. The car runs great, but when the

engine is cold I hear a very loud banging or tapping sound until the engine is thoroughly warmed up. The sound is not as pronounced when the temperature is warm outside although it is still there. I have consulted with a number of people including GM techs who tell me that this engine is known for this cold start noise which is caused by piston slap and that this is considered normal. Is there something I should or could do to minimize this? Are any engine oil additives that would help this?

-Darrin in Brainerd, Minnesota Dear Darrin, What these technicians have been telling you is correct. These engines tend to make noise upon a cold start, the colder the engine the louder the noise.

Some people fear they are going to fly apart because they are so loud. With age they tend to become worse but we can’t recall one that has come apart because of it. As a mechanic and current owner of a vehicle with this engine I’ve tried everything I can in the way of engine oil additives and haven’t found any that make even the slightest difference in the way it sounds so I’ve learned to live with it as many people with these cars have had to do.

Burnhamville Township December 18, 2018 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held December 18, 2018 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of November 27, 2018 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson.

Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about tax payment received, notice of weed inspection report due and an increase in the Minnesota aid. The board also heard from a resident of Flower Trail requesting road improvements. The board completed and signed the weed inspection report.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5682 through 5690: Rev. $663.90; R & B $3,574.42. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

With nicer weather happening the supervisors will look into brush cutting the ditches. They will take turns going around township roads in their areas to check and trim brush. Road contractor will work on blading roads and possibly trimming trees as weather will allow.

As per state statute, Sup. Berscheit made a motion pass resolution #2018- 1 to declare 2019 township polling place as Burtrum Community Center.

Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $88,077.42. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:23 p.m.

Shirley Hulinsky, Burnhamville Township Clerk Melrose City January 3, 2019 The Melrose City Council met in a regular meeting on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Melrose City Center pursuant to due notice being given thereof. Present were Council Members Tony Klasen, Justin Frieler, Travis Frieler, Mark “Bunker” Hill, Mayor Joe Finken, City Administrator Michael Brethorst, and City Clerk Patti Haase. Mayor Finken presided thereat.

The Council then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

The City Administrator administered the Oath of Office to Mayor Joe Finken. Mayor Joe Finken administered the Oath of Office to Council Members Travis Frieler, and Mark “Bunker”

Hill who were elected in November 2018 to serve for four-year terms beginning January 2019.

A motion was made by Mr. Klasen seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the agenda as presented.

Mayor Finken then opened the floor to public comment.

Pat Schad inquired if there will be another meeting prior to the Council making a decision on the Rock Arch Rapids Fish Passage or if they would be taking action at this evenings meeting.

The following items were considered for approval under the Consent Agenda: 1) Assistant Weed Inspector: Mayor to appoint for a one-year term. Streets/Parks Supervisor Gary Middendorf will serve in this position.

2) City Forester: Mayor to appoint for a one-year term.

Resolution 2019-1, Resolution Designating Official Depository and Supplemental Depositories for City Funds. This resolution designates Central Minnesota Credit Union – Melrose as the official depository for 2019 and the Finance Director is given the authority to name additional depositories for the deposit of funds.

The Council may wish to again grant the Finance Director the authority to name the depositories. This could be done with the understanding that Central Minnesota Credit Union - Melrose, and Freeport State Bank – Melrose would also be used as depositories. The motion designating the depositories of City funds should include the following, “For the purpose of being certain that all funds in financial institutions will be insured, the Finance Director shall have the authority pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 118A.02, Subd.

1, to name depositories for the deposit of funds so as to make certain that all City funds are either insured or collateral has been pledged by the depository as security, as permitted by M.S., Chapter 118A.” A motion was made by Mr. Hill seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the Consent Agenda items.

Consideration was then given to the following appointments: 1) Acting Mayor: Council to take action appointing an Acting Mayor for a one-year term.

Council Member Dick Christenson served as Acting Mayor for the remainder of 2018.

A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Hill and unanimously carried to appoint Mr. Klasen as Acting Mayor for 2019.

2) Public Utilities Commission: The Council to appoint one member for a three-year term and a Council Representative for a one-year term to the Public Utilities Commission. Incumbent Jeremy Kraemer is seeking reappointment. An application has been submitted by Wyatt Kemper. Mr. Kemper expressed interest in serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Public Utilities Commission. Mr. Finken and Mr. Klasen expressed an interest in serving as the Council Representative for the Melrose Public Utilities Commission.

A motion was made by Mr. Hill appointing Mr. Finken to serve as the Council representative for the Melrose Public Utilities Commission for 2019.

The motion was seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler with a roll call vote recorded as follows: FOR: Council Members Hill, Justin Frieler, Travis Frieler, and Mayor Joe Finken. The Council gave consideration to designating the Grievance Representative for 2019. The Utilities Commission will also designate their Grievance Representative for 2019 at its January 14, 2019 meeting. For 2018, Joe Finken was the Council representative and Jeremy Kraemer was the Utilities Commission representative. The Council to take action appointing a Council Member to serve as Grievance Representative for 2019.

A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried appointing Mr. Klasen to serve as the Council Grievance Representative for 2019.

The Council gave consideration to appointing a member to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for future labor discussions. In 2018 Council Member Josh Thieschafer served as Council Representative and Eric Seanger served as the Utilities Commission representative for this Committee.

The Utilities Commission will be appointing a representative at its January 14, 2019 meeting. The Council to take action appointing a representative to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for 2019. Mayor Finken is recommending appointing Mr. Hill as the Council Representative to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for 2019. A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried designating Mr. Hill as representative to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for 2019.

The City of Melrose contracts with Dymoke Law Office for legal work and general counsel.

The City has been under contract with Dymoke Law Office for the past three years. It is proposed to continue with another three-year agreement as outlined in the agreement. A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried approving the three-year agreement with Dymoke Law Office.

Mayor Finken stated that the City Council at its November 15, 2018 Council meeting directed that additional information be gathered on the proposed DNR project title Rock Arch Rapid and Associated Draw Down. A community education session was held on December 19, 2018 at which multiple speakers spoke on the topic and provided details

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

January 22, 2019: At approximately 1:22 p.m., their office received a report of a juvenile male that was hurt while sledding at Camp Lebanon which is located on the north side of Cedar Lake in Elmdale Township, west of Upsala.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 12-year-old juvenile from St. Cloud, MN was sledding down a hill at Camp Lebanon. The juvenile fell off the sled at the bottom of the hill and hit his head on the ice. The juvenile was in and out of consciousness at the scene and was transported to St. Cloud Hospital by Life Link III with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Upsala First Response Team, Upsala Fire Department, Gold Cross Ambulance and Life Link III.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

January 22, 2019: At 06:35 Alexis Kizer of Burtrum was driving her 1997 Chevy blazer east on County Road 2 south of Grey Eagle when she lost control due to the snow on the road. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled on it side. Kizer was not injured. Grey Eagle Fire Dept. assisted at the scene.

January 22, 2019: At 09:03 a fish house break in was reported on Fairy Lake, Sauk Centre. The rear window was broken out of a 16 foot White Ice Castle fish house and smaller flat screen TV was taken. A total of 7 fish houses were reported to be damaged or broken into on Fairy Lake. It is believed that the incident occurred during the evening hours on 1/21/19.

and summary of what could be expected if a project were to occur. Mr. Klasen has received more comments for direct opposition to the Rock Arch Rapid and Fish Passage project. Although he did receive a couple of people open to the project. Mr. Klasen commented that he believes the focus should be the bridge since there are too many unknowns with the rock arch rapids/fish passage. He does not believe now is the right time to do this project. Bunker Hill echoes Tony Klasen’s comments. Mr. Hill heard from many of the property owners who live along the lake and they are opposed to removing the dam.

Mr. Hill cannot support the Rock Arch Rapids/Fish passage at this time.

Mr. Travis Frieler stated that if the majority do not want the draw down, that is how the Council should move. Mr. Justin Frieler concurs as there has been a lot of push back from the Melrose Lake Improvement Association. A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Hill and unanimously carried to reject the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proposal to remove the Melrose Dam and draw down Melrose lake. They directed staff to move forward with the original Bridge and channel realignment to include the removal of the “Kraft Wall” and streambank restoration east of the Dam as Phase 1. Through consensus, the matter of the Rock Arch Rapids and Lake drawdown will be tabled till the completion of the 5th Ave Bridge / Phase 1. City staff should continue to develop possible options for the Phase II of the Dam project and Lake draw down, once that becomes a priority.

A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried that the meeting be adjourned at 6:35 p.m.

It’s exciting to see all those years of dreaming come to life in a place you can finally call your own. With so many possibilities at your fingertips, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement before asking yourself the most important question of all: How much house can I afford?

It doesn’t matter if the kitchen is fabulous or the backyard is big. If you can’t pay the mortgage each month, or find the cash to fix what’s broken, your home will never be a blessing.

Step 1: Start with a Solid Foundation Before trying to find out how much house you can afford, determine if you’re financially ready to buy a home by asking yourself these questions: Am I debt-free with three to six months of expenses in an emergency fund?

Can I make at least a 10 percent (preferably 20 percent) down payment?

Do I have enough cash to cover closing costs and moving expenses?

Is the house payment 25 percent or

less of my monthly take-home pay?

Can I afford to take out a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage?

Can I afford ongoing maintenance and utilities for this home?

If you answered no to any of the above questions, now may not be the right time to buy a home. Just married?

Wait at least a year before buying a home, even if your finances are in order.

A down payment of 20 percent will keep you from having to pay private mortgage insurance (PMI). Step 4: Get Pre-approved for a Mortgage Getting pre-approved takes a little more work, because a lender will need to verify your financial information and submit your loan for preliminary underwriting. Although it takes some extra time to get preapproved, it pays off when you begin your home search since a preapproval letter shows that you’re a serious buyer.

Step 5: Calculate the Costs You can figure out how to buy a home that won’t bust your budget by crunching a few numbers. Once you know how much you can realistically spend on a new home, make sure you and your spouse are on the same page about your budget and what you can actually pay.

Add up all income you bring home each month, then multiply your monthly take-home pay by 25 percent to get your maximum mortgage payment. If you bring home $5,000 a month, that means your house payment should be no more than $1,250 a month, including taxes and insurance. Also, remember to factor in home ownership costs and moving expenses.

Snow piles that are pushed across the road or dumped into the road right away can cause drifting and unsafe driving conditions for motorists.

It also can cause serious damage to snowplow equipment when hitting compacted and frozen snow deposited into the road right of way.

These actions may be punishable as a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statutes 169.42 and 160.2715. Misdemeanors are punishable by a fine of up to $700 and/or a jail sentence of up to 90 days.

Furthermore the person responsible for depositing snow onto the roadway or road right of way may also be liable in a civil lawsuit if damages or injuries occur as a result of this action.

We strongly urge residents, as good neighbors and motorists themselves, not to add to the hazards of wintertime driving in this way

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz On the Third Day – John 2:1-11 John 2 is Jesus’ first miracle recorded in the Gospel of John and begins with, “On the third day.” A typical wedding feast of this time would last a whole week. Now before the feast is half over the wine is gone. This is a problem. “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” Mary realizes this is not yet Jesus’ hour and tells the servants to do whatever Jesus tells them. Apart from Jesus’ resurrection, his hour, the work he is to accomplish is to remain hidden.

Everything God does is shrouded in his creation. He provides for our daily needs in and through the cycles of the earth. Cycles we could almost conclude have been going forever except there are clues here and there that tell a very different story. God’s salvation is also shrouded in creation, in the flesh and blood of Jesus. It takes faith and the gift of the Holy Spirit to see God at work in creation.

When Jesus addresses Mary he is simply telling her that the time for the one big public display of his power and authority to prove once and for all to all creation that he is the messiah has not yet come. Mary, being tuned into these hidden ways of God, tells the servants to simply do whatever he tells them. She encourages them to have faith that he has God’s power at his very fingertips; providing for the

needs of this wedding celebration is well within his power.

When our hearts and minds have doubts concerning God’s promises we tend to look for big and clear proofs.

We tend to be drawn to the flashy displays, the bright lights, the immediate satisfaction of earthly blessings and proofs. Jesus could have easily made a big show of this first miracle but this was not Jesus’ hour.

On the third day Jesus’ hour would come when he would rise victorious over death and the devil giving eternal life to all who believe in him and his not-so-obvious ways. The miracle of turning water into wine was “the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” Those closest to Jesus saw his glory; to the rest of the guests it was hidden because this was not yet Jesus’ hour.

On the third day, at Jesus’ resurrection, his full glory was revealed – so why don’t all people believe in him? Why don’t those around us see all the wonderful things God does for us? It is because God continues to keep hidden his full glory until our hour comes to believe. To truly know God’s full love he first must lead us to the Cross, our sins must be placed not upon ourselves but on God’s chosen one and we must see what God does for us in all his power and glory on the third day. Medication Drop Box Locations in Stearns County For several years the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Environmental Service and our local law enforcement partners have operated a medication and pharmaceutical disposal program. The program has been very successful. Currently there are 12 disposal locations throughout Stearns County.

The total amount of medication and related pharmaceutical items disposed of in 2018 was 6,665 pounds. That amount is up approximately 500 pounds over 2017 numbers. The medications are transported by Stearns County deputies to the Pope-Douglas refuse burner several times a year for disposal.

The overall goal of this program in Stearns and across the State and country is to ensure unused medication does not end up in our groundwater supply, lakes

and rivers.

After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good, and therefore we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax - OH NOOO!”

Then silence.

The captain finally came back on the intercom and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I am SO sorry if I scared you earlier, but while I was talking, the flight attendant brought me a cup of coffee and spilled the hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!”

A passenger in coach shouted, “That’s nothing. He should see the back of mine!”
