Are YOU coachable? -By Harvey Mackay Pat Riley, president of the Miami Heat and a long-time highly successful NBA coach, used to ask his players “Are you F.A.T.?” F.A.T. was an acronym he created that was short for “faithful, available and teachable.”

Riley was always on the lookout for players who would make sacrifices to make his teams better. He wanted people who were reliable and would do whatever it took to win games. But he was most interested in making sure his players were coachable.

Are YOU coachable? We’d all like to think we are, but it often means swallowing our pride and changing the way we think or act. Yet it’s hard to be successful if we are not coachable.

People who are coachable want more.

They want to learn as much as they can. They realize they are in school for a lifetime and their education is an investment, never an expense.

They know that they don’t know everything and are aware of their strengths, weaknesses, values and habits. They have high self-esteem.

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan said, “My best skill was that I was coachable. I was a sponge and aggressive to learn.”

Another trait of coachable people is curiosity. They ask lots of questions and try to learn something new every day. They might read a book on a topic they’ve never studied or watch a webinar instead of another rerun. Or listen to a TEDtalk. They might do something that they’ve never done before, just for the experience. They realize the future belongs to the curious.

Coachable people embrace change and look for better ways to do things. They seek out best practices. Change, for most people, is an unnerving experience. But change is

inevitable. It’s one of the only constants in life.

People who are coachable are willing to try new things and are not afraid to make mistakes. And they don’t make excuses. They are action-oriented and get things done. The person who wants to do something finds a way; the person who doesn't finds an excuse.

Coachable people are good listeners.

They hear what people are saying because they spend twice as much time listening as talking, which is why we were born with two ears but only one mouth. They value lessons from others with greater experience.

They seek insights and perspectives from others and pursue mentors. They realize a mentor can help even experienced people boost their job performance and advance their careers. None of us is as smart as all of us. I figure two perspectives are better than one and five are better than four.

Listening to advice or criticism is not always easy. However, coachable people are open and receptive to receiving feedback, which provides them an opportunity to improve. They aren’t afraid to adjust their thinking to improve their results.

Accountability for their actions is a common attribute among the coachable. They own their decisions because they try to do the right thing even when it is not the easy thing. They accept the blame for their actions when necessary as well as the credit when it is deserved.

Coachable people are willing to put ego aside. Coachable people are humble. They

know what humorist Will Rogers meant when he said, “Get someone else to blow your horn and the sound will carry twice as far.”

Coachable people are positive. The glass is half full, not half empty. Thinking positive has no negative. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and success. Whatever the mind expects, it finds.

And here’s one you might not expect: coachable people are willing to learn at every age. Coaching is not just for the new kid on the block or the most recent hire. I’ve had very useful coaching from some of my younger colleagues who share their insights on current culture and developing technologies. I welcome their advice.

One of my favorite aphorisms goes like this: Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

This gives you a choice: a positive or negative path. Clearly, the positive path will lead to a more rewarding, more contented life.

Mackay’s Moral: The capacity to learn is a gift. The ability to learn is a skill. The willingness to learn is a choice.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Politically Correct

Last evening, I was flipping through the TV channels and landed on a channel that was playing Archie Bunker. The old replay wasn't as interesting as it was over half a century ago, but it did bring a thought to my mind. Could we be allowed to see a new show today, that included as many critical statements about race and ethnicity.

That was actually the most interesting part of the presentation. As I continued watching I began thinking about other shows that based their performance on the same premise.

Other shows at that time would have to include the story about the fellow and his son who resided in a junkyard and was frequently warning Elizabeth that he was coming home.

The basis for this show was showing a comedic story about their own race.

Another involved a fellow and his wife, both black, who were moving on up to the east side to that deluxe apartment in the sky. This show also made a comedy about blackness, but the main character had a goal of financial success. Several of the shows in the series involved a couple, one being black and the other being white and the comments and references the main character made regarding the relationship.

Some of us remember the radio show Amos and Andy and the Jack Benny Show.

I don't know what Rochester looked like, but his claim to fame was being a comedic black butler. Those shows both used race as their avenue to success.

When we look back even further, many of us had books about Little Black Sambo and the tar baby. Those books were very popular

after the original issue in 1899. I'm sure the exposure to these books had a tiny influence on our early, little minds.

I can't recall books about Ole and Lena, but as years go by, we hear many stories about them. Some of them are dumber than others. But I guess they are meant to be.

Today the new TV shows attempt to gain popularity by trying to get as close to sexual comments as they dare. The male actors appear to be looking for only one thing and the female actors frequently appear to have the same thoughts.

Years ago, we didn't even know what the statement politically correct was. Our speech and literature choices were controlled by our church, teachers, parents and grandparents.

We didn't have political organizations and authorities making rules that we needed to follow. As kids, if we said something that wasn't accepted by our friendship group, there was a possibility of verbal or possibly physical penalties. Adults were fairly quick to give a stern look, a couple of sharp words or a slap behind the head giving you the idea that what you said was not acceptable.

When we look back there were a large number of comedy shows making all of the actors look dumb. These shows are still being created today. It appears that being stupid is OK, as long as it is politically correct.

Just another example of confusion for us who have experienced both worlds.

that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Do you plan for your future? The man in this series was living for himself, that is until he had a wakeup call. Then, he became a player in the Christian faith. He cared more about other people and invested his life in their lives.

At the end of his life, many people came to his funeral and talked about what this man did for them. Psalm 1:116:15 “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants.”

This is where I have put my hope, in the Lord Jesus Christ, because He exists and has died for me.

I have a teaching DVD series titled “Not a Fan” by Kyle Idleman. Kyle’s main premise reflects the question: “Is our faith in Jesus Christ strong, or is it weak? The series starts with him at a high school football game, he has some popcorn bags for him and his wife. Before he can get to his wife, his phone rings and someone from his congregation is dying. So, he delivers the popcorn and drives to the hospital.

So, as the series goes on Kyle looks to the life of the person who is on his death bed and talks about the challenges and changes in life, very similar to the ones we have. He refers to the football game as representing our Christian life. He mentions that everyone in the stands is there to watch the football game, they are fans.

The football teams are the players. In our Christian walk, are we a player or just a fan, watching others play the game?

Hebrews 11 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible, it gives us many examples of faith.

What made these people heroes of faith is that they believed God existed. Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe

Ralph S. Muellner

Ralph S. Muellner, age 91 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, January15, 2022 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, January 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Thursday at the church.

Ralph Steve Muellner was born December 1, 1930, in Melrose, Minnesota to Raymond and Agnes (Tiemann) Muellner. Eventually his parents moved to Sauk Centre. On October 10, 1955, he married Regine Schieffer at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Ralph worked for numerous farmers including a large farm in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He moved back to Sauk Centre where he had several jobs before going to work for Litchfield Produce which later became Jennie-O-Foods in 1958. After working there for 30 years, he worked for Bueckers Sanitation for 25 years before retiring and continued to help out when needed.

Ralph always talked about traveling in his younger years when he retired. He made that dream a reality with multiple trips in his camper visiting many states and living in it for three months in Arizona and Texas during the winter.

Ralph was able to fix anything. He collected things that would one day be pieced together to make something useful. He spent many hours taking things apart and putzing around in his garage. He also enjoyed playing cards and dancing.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Melrose Seniors, Young at Heart Club, and the Winnebago Club.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Regine Muellner of Melrose; children, Debra (Bob) Kaliszewski of South St. Paul, Dennis (Dianne) Muellner of Sauk Centre, Dale (Diane) Muellner of Sauk Centre, Dean (Mary) Muellner of Inver Grove Heights, and Darrell (Julie) Muellner of Sauk Centre; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Mary Zinniel of St. Cloud; and brother, Alquin (Sally) Muellner of St. Joseph.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Agnes Muellner; brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Bernadine Muellner; and brother-in-law, Edward Zinniel.

Serving as casket bearers will be Adam, Eric, Ray, and Steven Muellner, Mike Botz, and Don Hieserich. Cross bearer will be Nicole Ainali and scripture bearer will be Tiffany Muellner. Readers will be Cori Ainali and Tiffany Muellner. Gift bearers will be Louise Hieserich and Mary Zinniel.

Memorials are preferred to Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Centre or charity of choice.

Mary Ann R. Terres, age 95 of Spring Hill, died peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Fairway Pines in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 17 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Mary Ann Rose Meyer was born December 25, 1926, in Lake Henry, Minnesota to Simon and Gertrude (Laubach) Meyer. She was united in marriage to Jerome Terres on June 30, 1947, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

The couple owned Jerry’s Tavern in Greenwald from 1947 through 1957. They then farmed near Spring Hill until selling the farm to their son, Rick. While farming, Jerry and Mary Ann worked as a team, Jerry did most of the fieldwork while Mary Ann kept everyone fed. She cooked many meals and enjoyed making homemade bread and noodles. In her later years, Mary Ann enjoyed watching her grandsons play baseball with the Spring Hill Chargers, she had a soft spot for holding and cuddling babies, and loved her pets, especially her dog, Lucy. The one thing that brought so much joy to Mary Ann was her grandchildren and great grandchildren; they truly brightened up her day.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Christian Women, and Catholic United Financial.

Survivors include her children, Gene Terres of Minneapolis, Bob (Jane) Terres of Spring Hill, Rick (Brenda) Terres of Spring Hill, and Sharon (Gary) Thelen of Freeport; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome “Jerry” Terres on February 20, 2013; parents; brothers and sister and spouses, Clarence (Pauline) Meyer, Art (Leonora) Meyer, and Verena (Art) Terres; and sisters and brothersin-law, Marie (Syl) Welle and Esther (Victor) Koska.

Serving as casket bearers were Jason Terres, Mike Terres, Brad Terres, Brent Terres, Nathan Terres, Jamie Terres, Eric Terres, and Greg Thelen. Cross bearer was Kayla Schmitz and scripture bearer was Megan Borgerding. Gift bearers were Kelly Lieser and Sara Christianson.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Frederick J. Zeis, age 55 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 20, at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary’s in Holdingford.

Fred died Friday at the St. Cloud Hospital from Covid.

Fred was born May 17, 1966 in St. Cloud to Gerald and Ramona (Vos) Zeis. He grew up on his family farm and graduated from High School in 1984. Fred was a lifelong farmer and tractor enthusiast. Particularly, John Deere tractors. He loved his Ford pickup, cattle and his dogs.

Fred is survived by his parents, Gerald and Ramona Zeis, Avon; his children, Tim Zeis, Holdingford; Levi Zeis, St. Cloud, Anna Zeis, Brooten; his sister, Beverly (Andy) Kostreba, Holdingford; and his girlfriend Roselyn Zilka, Holdingford.

Stephen Schmidt

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Stephen “Schmidty” Schmidt, age 60 of Avon, was held Monday, January 17 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Stephen died on Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital. A private burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home.

Stephen was born November 15, 1961 in Melrose to Elmer and Marion (Wahnschaffe) Schmidt. He grew up in Albany where he lived most of his life. He married Cynthia Goebel on January 2, 1982 in Freeport. She died November 16, 1990. Stephen worked in the Warehouse for Fingerhut in St. Cloud. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Stephen is survived by his children, Otto Schmidt, Avon; William Schmidt, Avon, Amy Schmidt, Albany; grandchildren, Madison Groover, Lunah Borst, Silas Borst; brother, Andy (Nancy) Schmidt, Crow Wing and Patricia Karsch, Avon and many extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Cynthia; his brothers and sisters, Marlene Knobloch; Ervin Schmidt, Wayne Schmidt, Glen Schmidt and Carol Christen-Karasch; nephew Eric Job.

Marion E. Tembrock, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 14, 2022 at home in Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, January 21 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following lunch.

Marion was born October 19, 1931 to Louis and Mary (Oevermann) Rehkamp. Marion grew up on the family farm near Melrose, MN and graduated from Melrose High School in 1949.

She worked in Melrose for two years for the City Clerk Office and Dr. AH Zachman’s office. She moved to Elk River, MN in 1952 and worked for Rural Coop Power Association as a receptionist and then transferred to Payroll where she worked until May 1960.

Marion married Henry L. Tembrock on September 26, 1959 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose, MN. They lived in Elk River, MN until 2014 and then moved to their home on Big Birch Lake near Grey Eagle, MN. Marion enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening, cooking, baking, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a blood donor and member of the Christian Mothers.

Marion is survived by her husband and four children, Linda Hunt, Brooklyn Park, MN, Sue Tembrock, Maple Grove, MN, Jan Tembrock, Brooklyn Park, MN and David (Janelle) Tembrock, Lino Lakes, MN; four grandchildren, Nicole (Joel) Giedlinski, Jennifer Hunt, Carson and Joelle Tembrock; one great grandchild, Jack Giedlinski.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard; and brothers, Leander, Robert, and Walter Rehkamp.

Lorraine B. Peschel

Lorraine B. Peschel, age 91 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at Fairway Pines Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Lorraine Bernadine Voller was born May 3, 1930 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Rademacher) Voller. She spent time on a farm with her family and then moved into the city of Sauk Centre. Lorraine graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1948 and furthered her education by obtaining a teaching certificate from St. Cloud State. She taught at Sauk Rapids elementary for two years. She was united in marriage to Don Peschel on September 25, 1954 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Lorraine became Grey Eagle first Kindergarten teacher for seven years. She then was hired by Sauk Centre Elementary and taught kindergarten there for 26 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre where she served as Eucharistic Minister and was a Catechism teacher.

Lorraine was a member of the Christian Mothers where she served as president for many years.

Other memberships include Delta Kappa Gamma, Lions Club, past president of the Community Concert Association, Hospice volunteer, ECFE volunteer, Senior Dining site member, Friends of the Library, Dollars for Scholars, Relay for Life and the Community Education Board. She was involved in many other organizations. Lorraine earned various awards including Stearns County Woman of the Year, 2010 REAM Educator Award for outstanding community service, Sauk Centre Main Streeters Athletic Hall of Fame (inducted in 2013), Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (20152016), and the Lifetime Distinguished Volunteer Award in 2016. Lorraine’s joy was to serve her community through volunteering and leading.

One of her favorite pasttimes was to watch her granddaughter’s activities and participate in Sauk Centre Mainstreeter sports as a ticket taker and avid fan.

Survivors include her children, John Peschel of Burtrum, Jeanne (John) Krousey of Williams, and Donny Peschel of Alexandria; three grandchildren, Kali (Drew) Peschel Ott, Kelsey Peschel, and Victoria Peschel; brother, Rich (Jan) Voller of Duluth; and sister-in-law, Arlene Voller of Annandale; Carole Martin of St. Cloud and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Don Peschel; parents; brothers, Fred Voller, Bill Voller, Don Voller, and Butch Voller; sister, MaryAnn Johnson; brother-in-law, Jim Johnson; and sisters-in-law, JoAnn Voller, and Betty Ann Voller.

Casket bearers include nephews, Mark Voller, Kevin Voller, Tim Voller; nieces, Lori Voller Tirevold, Ruth Voller Boubin; and family friends, Rob Wiener and Charlie Warring. Honorary casket bearers will be the Christian Mothers.

Rose Mary Jarnot

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Rose Mary Jarnot, age 87 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 22 at the Church of All Saints-St. Hedwig in Holdingford. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Rose Mary died peacefully at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany on Saturday, January 15, 2022, surrounded by her family. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM on Friday, January 21, and again after 10:00 AM, Saturday morning at the church. All Saints, St. Hedwig's prayers will be at 4:00 pm followed by the Christian Mother’s and The Rosary Sodality. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Rose Mary was born May 10, 1934, in St. Anna to Michael and Adeline (Bueckers) Atkinson. She married the love of her life, Clarence Jarnot on May 4, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Anna, and they were blessed with nine children. The couple farmed together outside of Holdingford. She was a dedicated caregiver, homemaker, hard-working farm wife, spiritual leader, and a fantastic cook.

Rose Mary, a faithful Catholic was a member of the Church of All Saints-St. Hedwig, St. Hedwig’s Christian Mothers, Rosary Sodality, and Holdingford American Legion Auxiliary.

As an active member in her parish, Rose Mary taught and prepared many children for First Communion. She prayed the Rosary daily, prayed faithfully for everyone that was in need of prayers for any reason, including family, friends, community, religious leaders, and especially for strong faith and protection of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

After farming she enjoyed retirement at Two River Lake and working at The Store in St. Anna and Helping Hands in Holdingford.

She enjoyed meeting new people, visiting those not able to leave their homes, and loved giving “free” hugs. She made such a positive impact on so many lives and was named Holdingford City Mother in 2011. She loved bringing people together through family Christmas and Fourth of July celebrations to share the joy, laughter, and love of family. She always said, “The more the merrier.”

She instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of faith and lived as an exemplary role model. She was a pillar of hard work and loyalty, shown by helping and including others. She will be remembered as a humble servant to God. Rose Mary loved life and her greatest joy was being surrounded by family. She was an incredible mom, grandma, and great-grandma and will be missed beyond measure by all who knew her.

Rose Mary is survived by her children; Rosanne (Craig) Voss, St. Francis; Timothy (Audrey) Jarnot, Clear Lake; James (Mary) Jarnot, St. Anna; Patricia (Steven) Voss, Avon; Bonita (Jeffrey) Rooney, St. Michael; Jean (Brenton) Wold, St. Michael; Donald (Janet) Jarnot, St. Wendel; Eileen (Matthew) Lundgren, St. Anthony Village. Sister, Carol Lange, Golden Valley; and brother, Michael “Mickey” (Darlene) Atkinson, Fort White, FL. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way).

Adeline F. Sabrowsky

F u n e r a l Services were held Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose for Adeline Freida Sabrowsky, 90, who passed away on January 9th at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. Pastor David Mommens officiated and burial was at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery

in Little Falls.

Adeline was born on November 19, 1931 to Alouisius and Mata (Hamann) Bauer in Albany, Minnesota. She married Arthur Otto Sabrowsky on February 5, 1951 at Immanual Lutheran Church in Farming Township. She was a waitress at restaurants in Melrose and Sauk Centre and at the Americ Inn in Sauk Centre where she took care of the breakfast area. She was a member of the Melrose American Legion Auxiliary and the Melrose VFW Auxiliary. Adeline loved to play cards and enjoyed the casino. She cherished times spent traveling with Arthur in their motorhome.

Her grandkids were very close to her heart and she enjoyed spending time with them.

Adeline is survived by her children; Joyce (Bill) Rausch of Melrose, Jan Linn of Melrose, Jerry (Joyce) Sabrowsky of Sauk Centre and Judy (Dennis) Weber of Melrose, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2009, sister Helen Spicer, brother Arnold Bauer, and great grandson Michael Hayes.

Daniel E Joarnt

A memorial service will at a later date for Daniel Joarnt, 53, of Long Prairie who died Thursday, January 6, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Dan was born June 10, 1968 to Eugene and Gladys (Feldman) Joarnt in Long Prairie. He graduated from Long Prairie High School and went on to attend Alexandria Technical and Community College where he earned a Law Enforcement degree. Shortly after, he accepted a position at Banta Corp. in Long Prairie where he had a 21-year career as a shipping and receiving fork truck operator. He then worked for a short time at Alexandria Industries before beginning a job at Ecowater Systems in Long Prairie.

Dan really enjoyed woodwork and there was little he could not build. He also enjoyed fishing. He had a passion for hockey. coaching teams his son Devan played on was a highlight for him. He was a master at crossword puzzles and would look forward to his friend Charlie Reichert bring him a new book each week. He was content relaxing with friends and family. His grandson Wesley had a special place in his heart.

He is survived by his son Devan (Amanda) Joarnt of Browerville; daughter Nicole Bailey of Grey Eagle; brother Randy (Patricia) Turner of Sauk Centre; sisters Leah Anderson of Buffalo, Lynn (George) Sletta of Hibbing, Carol Lucas of Buffalo and Barbara (Ray) Hammel; grandson Wesley Joarnt and his cat Jasper who will dearly miss curling up on his lap.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Katherine Joarnt.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the December Senior High Student of the Month, senior Nicholas Mettler.

Nicholas is the son of Randy and Marge Mettler. He enjoys playing the tuba and piano.

Nick plans to attend college and is considering a career in physical therapy. He participates in a variety of school activities, including playing football, basketball and track since seventh grade, He has lettered in all three sports and received conference awards for both academic and athletic achievements. He was a member of the speech team in grades seven through ten and has participated in theatre since eighth grade. He served on student council his seventh, tenth and senior year.

Outside of school, Nick sings and plays piano for church and is active in 4H. He has volunteered at SAB meat raffles. His favorite thing about school is the social aspect. His achievements include being on the A and B Honor roll, being in All State band for tuba.

He has won academic awards for math and band.

He then turns around and helps his classmates understand these concepts as well. Nick is great at leading by example, and I look forward to seeing his many future successes.”

Dear Lindsay, Well, here’s the thing. At this point in his life, the goal of this investment isn’t wealth.

Number one, it’s not a lot of money. Number two, well, it’s not a lot of money. The goal is to create knowledge, reward his interest in the subject and teach him how to handle his finances when he’s an adult.

I’ve got no problem with you helping him open checking or savings accounts at a local bank or credit union. There are lots of good lessons to be learned in reconciling a

bank statement, and the value of spending, saving and giving. Then, you could get with a good financial pro, one with the heart of a teacher, and let him open a mutual fund for $50 a month with you as the custodian. He could learn about compound interest, how to calculate the value of his shares and other things, and all that would be a good learning exercise, too.

We did these things with our kids. But keep in mind that over the course of a year— and when you’re 13, that’s an eternity—there’s not going to be a lot of action on the investing side of things. It could be kind of boring for him at times. But he’s better off to learn now that good things don’t always come with flashing lights and whistles.

When it comes to wealth building, things aren’t sexy. Slow and steady wins the race!

Updated Quarantine & Isolation Guidance The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recently updated their COVID-19 isolation and quarantine guidance. People who are in isolation should stay home until it’s safe for them to be around others.

• Everyone who has presumed or confirmed COVID-19 should stay home and isolate from other people for at least 5 full days (day 0 is the first day of symptoms or the date of the day of the positive test for asymptomatic persons).

• People who are confirmed to have COVID-19 or are showing symptoms of COVID-19 need to isolate regardless of their vaccination status.

• If you come into close contact with someone with COVID-19, you should quarantine if you are not up to date on COVID-19 vaccines.

- Stay home and away from other people for at least 5 days (day 0 through day 5) after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19.

- For 10 days, watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other COVID-19 symptoms.

- If you develop symptoms, get tested immediately and isolate until you receive your test results.

- If you do not develop symptoms, get tested at least 5 days after you last had close contact with someone with COVID-19.

• If you had close contact with someone with COVID-19 and you are in one of the following groups, you do not need to quarantine. o You are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines. o You had confirmed COVID-19 within the last 90 days.

Dear Motor Medics, I purchased a 2007 Honda Odyssey van with 80,000 miles and I thought I got a great deal. The used vehicle inspection only had one suggestion, new tires. I took the van to a tire store and they quoted me $2400.00 to replace the tires and I thought I was going to die on the spot. I thought they were out of line when they said I had special PAX tires, so I left the store and was told the same at another.

What is this PAX thing and who would ever be willing to pay so much for minivan tires? Can I get rid of them and install regular tires?

-Fred in McCook, Nebraska Dear Fred, Surprise! It feels like they should yell this when you go to get these replaced. Yes they’re expensive but they are very different from other tires and that’s why they are. These tires were installed on some 05-09 Honda Odyssey, 06-08 Nissan Quest, 06-08 Acura RL, and 05-09 Toyota Sienna vans and some others. The tire is a run flat design allowing you to travel with no air for a limited time. They require special equipment to repair or replace and not every tire store has the equipment. To change to a regular tire requires changing the wheel as well making it very expensive. Either way it will be a jolt to the wallet. Check the internet for more information and options on these tires.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a very bad smell when I turn on the blower in my car. It smells like a dirty refrigerator. I must run the system for a few minutes with the windows down before I can stand to sit in the car. This started last year and has progressively become worse. It does not matter if it is set to heat or air conditioning. What could this be and how can I get rid of the smell?

-Terry in Enid, Oklahoma Dear Terry, The smell you have is likely exactly what you are describing, the smell of a dirty refrigerator. As you drive with the A/C on water forms on the evaporator inside of the air box and when it is saturated runs out of the box through a tube. You can see this water condensation running on the ground if everything is working correctly. If you don’t or have

wet carpet you need to have the tube cleaned.

When you shut the vehicle off the water can start to mildew like a refrigerator and start to smell. Some vehicles get so bad that they need to be cleaned professionally with a system that introduces an antibacterial cleaner into the intake of the system to clean it up. Check with your local shop to see if they can check the system for proper drainage and if they recommend performing this service to take care of the smell issue you have.

Supreme Court vaccine rulings; controversial proposal to reduce sentences for repeat offenders delayed

With debate about mandates being in the news lately, the entire country was waiting for the announcements last Friday from the U.S. Supreme Court concerning the legality of forcing large employers and health care facilities to make vaccination a condition of employment for their workers. In the case of large employers, the mandate was stayed or put “on hold,” while for health care workers, that mandate was continued and allowed to remain in effect.

The employer mandate for those companies with over 100 employees was halted by the high court’s 6-3 decision to overturn a lower court ruling that had allowed it to proceed.

The vaccine mandate for health care workers can be enforced, the court ruled.

First doses must be given by Jan. 27, with the second dose deadline being Feb. 28.

After last week’s court ruling, the federal agency charged with enforcing the large employer mandate, OSHA, along with its state affiliate, MN OSHA, announced it is suspending enforcement.

To me, this is more about personal rights than the vaccinations themselves. If one feels vaccines are effective and reduce the severity of COVID, then, by all means, get vaccinated. However, because of a number of reasons, including natural immunity and other health concerns, no one should be forced to get the shot. And with all the gimmicks being offered to entice folks to get vaccinated, ranging from free fishing licenses to Target gift cards or straight-up cash, it can make one wonder about the vaccine’s true effectiveness.

Again, disclosure here: I’ve been vaccinated and had the booster, but that was my choice. I have an underlying condition, and it made sense to get vaccinated to lower the severity of the virus should I become infected.

But because anyone, vaccinated or not, can test positive and spread COVID-19, I don’t think we can say the rapid spread we are currently seeing is being caused by folks who are not vaccinated.

Although positive test results remain high, it appears that severe cases requiring hospitalization and/or ICU beds, are showing signs of beginning to trend downward. Let’s hope and pray that continues.

The Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission was set to act last week on a controversial proposal by the governor’s administration that would have reduced prison sentences for some repeat offenders who commit offenses while on probation for another crime. To me, the timing of this proposal isn’t appropriate because of the increase in violent crime, including record or near-record homicides last year in Hennepin and Ramsey counties, and a significant increase in the number of carjackings.

Several thousand public comments were received leading up to last week’s meeting, with approximately 95 percent being opposed to a reduction in sentences. All those comments apparently had an impact as the commission delayed taking action on the proposal.

Public safety is a basic right in our society. We should be able to walk on our streets and live in our homes safely. We should be able to stop at the grocery store without worrying if our car will be there when we come out. To do these things, we must have common sense laws and strong enforcement, with sentences commensurate with the crime. And we need to get back to showing respect for those who work in law enforcement.

Fire: January 13, 2022: On Thursday night Deputy Andrew Gravdahl responded to a barn fire at 38475 Co. Rd. 185 in Sauk Centre Twp. The caller had come outside and discovered a fire in the barn. The fire appeared to have begun in a small, attached shed at the front of the barn. The homeowner, William Wessel, 65, of Sauk Centre, said a small heater was being used in that shed to keep the water lines from freezing in the cold weather. The livestock that had been in the barn were able to exit through the rear barn doors and none were injured or lost.

The Sauk Centre Fire Department responded to fight the fire. The Sauk Centre Police Department also responded to the call. The Melrose Fire Department was requested to assist with equipment and manpower and Sauk Centre Ambulance stood by in case there were any injuries.

Snowmobile Crash: January 14, 2022: At approximately 5:30 p.m., Stearns County Sheriff Deputies along with the Albany Fire Department responded to a snowmobile crash on the Lake Wobegon Trail.

The crash was reported to be one quarter mile east of State Highway 238 near 360th Street in Albany Township. The caller advised the emergency communications center that they came across a snowmobile that had been travelling eastbound, left the trail, and struck a tree. They also reported the driver was conscious and appeared to have injuries to his right arm and right leg. After locating the scene, Albany Fire and Rescue along with Stearns County Sheriff Deputies provided initial treatment and prepared the male for transport. He was brought to the nearby ground ambulance and then driven to the Life Link Helicopter standing by. The driver, identified as Jason Panek 44, of St. Stephen was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Albany Fire Department,

Melrose Ambulance, and Life Link Helicopter.

Crash: January 19, 2022: At 8:16 a.m., received a report of a crash with injuries on River Street at 155th Avenue in Holding Township. This location is approximately 1.5 miles east of Holdingford.

Upon arrival, deputies found two vehicles had been involved in a crash. A 1997 Ford Escort driven by Thomas Wunderlich, 59, of Rice, was traveling eastbound on River Street and a 2017 Ford F350 driven by Brent Finken, 26, of Holdingford, was traveling southbound on 155th Avenue. Finken stated that he had stopped at the stop sign on River Street and did not remember seeing Wunderlich’s vehicle approaching. Finken continued through the stop sign and was struck by Wunderlich. Both drivers complained of neck pain. Wunderlich was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Ambulance and Finken was transported by a private party to be evaluated for his injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded, as well as, Holdingford Rescue, and Mayo Ambulance.

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the December Junior High Student of the Month, eighth grade student Reece Jackson. Reece is the daughter of Todd and Stacy Jackson. She enjoys playing sports and hanging out with family and friends. She plans to attend college and to continue playing basketball. Reece’s favorite thing about school is getting to see her friends, and her advice to other students is “give everything your all, because in the end it’s all worth it.”

Reece has played volleyball, basketball and softball since seventh grade, and also participating for many years in elementary sports. Student council has been fortunate to have her as a member since she started the Jr./Sr. High in seventh grade. She is consistent-

ly on the A Honor Roll and has earned awards for her academic participation.

Outside of school, Reece is involved in church events and youth group activities.

Social Studies teacher Pam Czech says, “Reece is enjoyable to have in class as she shows an amazing commitment to her learning. She has excellent grades, is very respectful to her peers and staff, and takes the initiative to help others. Reece has a very strong work ethic which shows both in academics and in athletics. She is attentive in class, contributes to class discussions, and is not afraid to ask questions. Because of these attributes, Reece is an excellent choice for student of the month and I expect great things for her in the future.”

A Turtle Funny

A little turtle begins to climb a tree slowly. After long hours of effort, he reaches the top, jumps into the air waving his front legs, until he crashes heavily into the ground with a hard knock on his shell.

After recovering his consciousness, he starts to climb the tree again, jumps again, and knocks the ground heavily again.

The little turtle persisted again and again while a couple of birds sitting at the edge of a branch, watched the turtle with pain.

Suddenly the female bird says to the male, "Dear, I think it's time to tell Swanville School Board Member Kathy our little turtle he's adopted."

Today I spotted an albino Dalmatian. It was the least I could do for him.

Beckman was recognized by the Minnesota School Board Association for her serving for 20 years on the Swanville School Board. Kathy attended a luncheon at the Minnesota School Board Association Leadership Conference where she received this award. Congratulations Kathy!
