In the movie, Stone plays an aspiring actress, opposite Ryan Gosling, who plays the role of a dedicated jazz musician who wants to open his own jazz night club. Both characters struggle to make ends meet while pursuing their dreams.

It’s really a story for much of America. We all struggle at one time or another.

One of my lessons when I speak to corporate America is believe in yourself even when no one else does. Life is not a parabolic curve. It doesn’t go straight up. There are a lot of lumps, a lot of bumps.

I have never yet met a successful person that hasn’t had to overcome either a little or a lot of adversity in his or her life. It seems like if we want to triple our success ratio, we might have to triple our failure rate.

So, who says that you can’t accomplish your goals? Who says that you’re not tougher and better and smarter and harder working and more able than your competition? It doesn’t matter if they say you can’t do it. The only thing that matters is if you say it. So, we all know, if we believe in ourselves, there’s hardly anything that we can’t accomplish.

Why do some of us have what it takes to pick ourselves up off the canvas when everyone else is ready to throw in the towel? I don’t know the answer, but I do know this: it isn’t all that rare. The

human species comes equipped with built-in mental toughness. Some of us just don’t know it’s there.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a firefighter, an astronaut, a rock star or an entrepreneur – but instead you find yourself marking time in a job you hate.

Should you give up on your dream job?

Don’t be too quick to write off your goals, but don’t be stupid about it either.

Some important considerations could help you decide what path to take.

• Be realistic. If the bulk of your musical experience is playing Guitar Hero in the basement, chances are you’re not going to sell out a major concert venue anytime soon. That doesn’t mean you can’t take lessons, meet other musicians, start a band and achieve some success.

• Keep your day job. Having a job pays the bills, but it also gives structure to your time. You’ll find it easier to set priorities and recognize what’s really important when you have to balance your dreams with the necessities of living. Remember that you are not your job.

• Adapt to change. The Internet has changed the way many of us work.

Whatever your dream job may be, stay flexible and look for opportunities that didn’t exist until recently.

• Create your own job. You don’t have to wait for some big company to give you a job title. Build your ideal job on your own – by freelancing parttime, for example, or volunteering your underused skills to a good cause.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Changing Neighborhoods

When this area was originally settled and continuing to about the middle of the 20th century “neighbor” had a different m e a n i n g .

Originally, we were excited to see a new family in the area, but today, “not quite so much.”

From the time of the first settlers in this area and up to about the middle of the 20th century, we made a special effort to get to know the new neighbor.

We offered to assist them with our time, machinery and friendship. The new neighbor was given gifts of homemade baked goods and garden produce.

We were aware that at some time they may need our help and we wanted to let them know that we were there. We offered assistance and directions to where necessities and repairs could be found. Some neighborhoods organized a community gathering, so that the new people could meet the neighbors.

Neighborhood parties and gatherings were common. Sometimes these occasions occurred because of a birthday, wedding or just to have a summertime potluck picnic. The neighbors were almost like part of your family.

When hunting deer we would organize drives, which may go across several neighbors land. Sometimes they knew about it and may be part of the hunting party. In other cases if they didn’t hunt, but if you shot a deer or

pheasant on their property, you would give some token of appreciation. It may be hamburger, sausage or an oven ready bird.

Today we sometimes don’t either have time or the desire to know the families in the neighborhood. I frequently have folks tell me that there is a family living a mile down the road from them, but they have never met them. They think they must work in town, because their car leaves in the morning and comes home in the evening.

We now must be concerned about property lines. We must not trespass on agricultural land. We must get permission to claim a deer that died on another persons property. We see many “No Trespassing” signs on land which we previously enjoyed.

Has this change come about because the DNR has greatly increased the number of laws in their enforcement area? Is it because the land-owner is concerned that he may be presented with a lawsuit from someone who injured themselves on his property, therefor receiving a financial settlement from the landowner’s insurance company will make the injury go away? Or maybe it is because we don’t know the property owner and if we did, he wouldn’t restrict access to his property.

MnDOT Asks Motorists’ Help for Safer Driving Around Snowplows

There have been more than 30 crashes this season involving vehicles and snowplows, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation is urging motorists to use extra caution during plowing and snowing operations.

“Crashes typically happen because of inattentive drivers, motorists driving too close to the plow or motorists driving too fast for conditions,” said Steve Lund, state maintenance engineer. “Our snowplow drivers are well trained to drive their plows, but motorists should be patient and stay back from the plow. Snowplows travel much slower than the posted speeds because it is most effective for clearing roads.”

Lund said that operators’ ability to see behind them is restricted behind the truck so they must rely on mirrors to see to the rear and side of the truck.

“Their vision is also hampered by the snow clouds they create while plowing. So the safest place you can be is well behind the snowplow and away from the snow cloud it creates,” he said.

Last year in Minnesota, there were 48

crashes involving vehicles and snowplows.

Minnesota law requires motorists to turn on their headlights when it’s snowing or at any other time when weather conditions impair visibility.

Here are some other recommendations for safer driving around snowplows: • Stay back and stay alive. Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.

• Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They also may travel over center lines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.

• Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.

• Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.

• Turn off the cruise control.

• Be patient, and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.

• Don’t drive distracted.

really committed to your dream job, you may have to give up on some other goals. You probably won’t start with a big salary or lots of vacation. Ditch your sense of entitlement, and be ready to pay your dues.

• Re-evaluate your goals. Many people reach the corner office only to realize they don’t really enjoy being the CEO. Spend some time thinking about how you’ve changed and deciding whether your dream is what you want to devote your life to.

Madeline E. “Helen” Blommel

Obituaries Kay L. (Sharp) Wolbeck Kay L. (Sharp) Wolbeck, age 59, died at her home near Swanville on Friday, January 6, 2017. In the 19 months since Kay was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer, she never once complained!

Her fight was one

of grace and strength.

Kay was born in Melrose, MN on October 6, 1957 to Roy and Betty (Peterson) Sharp. She lived around the Swanville and Burtrum areas the majority of her life. Kay married Leo Wolbeck Jr on July 27, 1990 and they lived in their current home since that time.

Kay lived a full, beautiful, honest (sometimes to a fault) life. She worked at local turkey farms for the last 30 years and was very dedicated to her job and loved the people she worked with and for. Kay enjoyed: hot coffee, feeding and watching the birds, playing Keno at the casino, fishing, deer hunting, and riding her Harley

with Jr. Kay took pride in keeping the lawn and flowers meticulous and beautiful at home and at the Pillsbury cabin. Kay’s personality showed through the sarcastic t-shirts she loved to wear:. ”Do I look like a people person to you”, “I love the sound you make when you shut up”, and many more.

Kay is survived by and will be dearly missed by her husband of 26 years Jr. (Leo), daughter Marlea (Jamie) Eggerth, grandsons; Jason, Austin, and Logan Eggerth. Sisters; Sherry (Glen) Hiltunen, Cindy Schwalbe, Jeanne (Paul) Jurek, and Bonnie (Bob) Arnzen. Nieces and nephews; Melanie Shaver, Amy Alexander, Brian, Ethan & Ellie Bense, Farrah, Dawson & Brielle Miller, Donald Jurek, Emilea, Nicole, Sadie & Anna Arnzen, and her beloved chihuahua, Bena.

Kay was preceded in death and welcomed into heaven by her Mom (Betty), Dad (Roy), brother Donnie and aunt Irene Kuehne.

A memorial gathering in celebration of Kay’s life will be held on June 3, 2017 from 1-4pm at the Pillsbury property. Everyone welcome, please save the date.

Bernard J. “Benny” Kremers Jr.

A Memorial Mass, celebrating the life of Bernard J. “Benny” Kremers Jr. age 59 of Upsala, will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 21 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Burial will be at a later date. Benny died after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church in Upsala. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Benny was born, February 19, 1957 in Little Falls to Bernard Sr. and Lucy (Breth) Kremers. He grew up on the family farm three miles north of Upsala and he graduated from Upsala Area School.

After high school, Benny worked various jobs that included roadwork, welding and truck driving. He married Cindy (Huls) Kremers, daughter of David and Darlene Huls, on April 22, 1989. They made their

home in the country two miles northeast of Upsala. Their daughter, Jolene, was born on July 10, 1998. She was daddy’s little girl and he always called her “Little Pumpkin.” Benny was a family man, he loved working around his home, making wood, working in the garage, swimming and taking jeep rides with his family around the countryside, grilling outdoors, watching western movies and UFC fights on TV, as well as playing games with his family. He also loved to build things out of steel and become an inventor from building a light stand, which he was proud of. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Benny is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Cindy; daughter, Jolene; brothers, Allan (Jeanette) Kremers, Upsala; Roy Kremers, Upsala; sisters, Bernadette Haldenwanger, Royalton; and Marlene (Tom) Mrosla, Royalton, sisterin-law, Dianne Kremers, Bowlus; and many nieces and nephews.

Benny is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Lucy Kremers, his brother, William Kremers and his grandparents.

Barbara E. Igers

B a r b a r a E. Igers, age 80 of Melrose, died Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, January 17 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Mitchell Bechtold and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Barbara Elizabeth Igers was born April 23, 1936 in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

She was the second of four children born to John and Florence (Eberhardt) Igers. She attended St. Boniface grade school and Melrose High School. After high school, she helped her father in his drug store and her mother at home. After the death of her mother in 1961, she continued to care for the house for her father. After his death in 1971, she lived in her home until she needed to move due to health reasons.

Helen was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Christian Mothers/ Women, Catholic United Financial, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aloys Blommel on October 20, 2002; parents; sons, Gerald, David, and Patrick Blommel; brothers, Henry, Vernon, and Alquin Dickhaus; sisters, Marie Hinnenkamp, Alma Frieler, and Irene Poepping; sister-in-law, LuAnn Dickhaus; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Ahrens, Bernard Frieler, Herbert Hinnenkamp, and Sylvester Poepping.

Barbara was a volunteer at St. Mary’s School for over 50 years working mainly in the library. She found this an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. She was a member St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose singing with the choir for 50 years. She was also a member of the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters. Barbara was a great “puzzler” who could spend hours working on jigsaw puzzles. She always kept a small garden and was dedicated to feeding wild birds. She enjoyed visiting with friends in the area and writing letters to family and friends. Her favorite television program was “Jeopardy” which she watched regularly. Barbara lived in the same house for almost 80 years. The people of Melrose were most kind and helpful to her for many years making a difficult life easier for her. The family is grateful.

Madeline E. “Helen” Blommel, age 96 of St. Rosa, died peacefully on Sunday, January 15, 2017 surrounded by her family, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Eberhard Schefers officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Madeline Elizabeth Blommel was born July 28, 1920 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Fred and Bertha (Herzog) Dickhaus. She married Aloys Blommel on September 4, 1940 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

They farmed in St. Rosa for 40 years then moved to town. In 1990 they moved to Melrose. Helen was a resident of Pine Haven in Melrose since 2011. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, cooking, cake decorating, playing cards, and watching the MN Twins.

M a r v i n Fritz of Clarrisa, formerly of Burtrum MN, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017. Services were held January 6, 2017 at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Clarissa.

Interment was at Morningside Memorial Gardens, Coon Rapids, MN. Marvin was born March 4, 1935, in Parker Township, Morrison County, to Otto & Agusta (Beseman) Fritz. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Randall. Marvin joined the US Army in 1958 and was

Joyce Fritz, 75, of Clarissa, passed away on January 10, 2017.

Funeral services for Joyce were held on January 13, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Clarissa with Pastor Young Chung officiating.

Interment was held at Morningside Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Coon Rapids. Casket bearers were Steven Fritz, Marvin Fritz, Joe Fritz, Andrew Fritz, Jason Fritz and Josh Fritz.

Joyce was born October 12, 1941, in

honorably discharged in 1960. He married Joyce Smith on March 11, 1961, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Randall.

Marvin and Joyce lived in Coon Rapids for 13 years then moved to Ham Lake where they lived for 18 years. From 1960 until retirement Marvin worked as an Operating Engineer with the Local 49.

Marvin retired on Long Lake in Burtrum and lived there for 22 years. In 2013, they moved to Clarissa.

Marvin enjoyed fishing, playing cards with family and friends and gardening.

Marvin is survived by his wife Joyce; children: Steven (Dawn) Fritz of Stacy, Marvin (Geri) Fritz of Anoka, Joseph Fritz of Lindstrom and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marvin is preceded in death by his parents; son David; siblings: Melvin, Arnold, Harvey, Esther and Alice.

Bruce Township, Todd County, to Leslie & Dorothy (Turner) Smith. On March 11, 1961, Joyce married Marvin Fritz at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Randall. Joyce worked as a professional seamstress for many years. Joyce and Marvin lived in Coon Rapids for 13 years then moved to Ham Lake where they lived for 18 years.

Joyce and Marvin retired on Long Lake in Burtrum and lived there for 22 years. In 2013, they moved to Clarissa.

Joyce is survived by children: Steven (Dawn) Fritz of Stacy, Marvin (Geri) Fritz of Anoka, Joseph Fritz of Lindstrom; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and siblings: Elaine Sutton, Vonnie Koester, Les Smith and Dottie Lou Baum.

Marie A. Welz, age 97 of Melrose, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, January 20 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Thursday and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Marie Agnes Moening was born March 7, 1919 in Melrose, Minnesota to John and Agnes (Renneker) Moening. She was united in marriage to Ted Welz on July 9, 1942 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

The couple owned and operated Welz Grocery from 1946 through 1974. Marie then began working for the Melrose Public School working in the kitchen from 1974 until her retirement in 1994.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Saints Bernard and Elizabeth Council, Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters, and a charter member and life member of SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary, where she received the Outstanding Hospital Volunteer Award in 2012. In her early years, Marie loved dancing. Most recently, she volunteered at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose and Meals on

Swanville High School AAA Award Nominees Seniors Sophie Larson and Jarick Rieffer have been selected as this year’s Swanville High School Triple A nominees.

The Triple A award recognizes top high school seniors who have excelled in Academics, Arts and Athletics. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one female and one male for the Triple A Award.

Jarick Rieffer, son of Joel and Gail Rieffer, has participated in band, speech and theater during his high school career. He has also participated in football, basketball and track and field. Jarick is on the honor roll and has taken college level classes. His future plans are to attend Hamline University and major in legal studies.

Triple A Award winners are selected through a multi-level process involving member schools of the League, the League’s administrative regions, and a special committee of educators, business leaders, and members from the fine arts and athletic communities. The Triple A On-Court Recognition Ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in March.

The top two finishers from each region will be invited to the banquet. League officials will announce the four Triple A Award recipients at the banquet.

Jennifer (Boeckermann) Rademacher graduated from Upsala High School in 2001. She was a three-year starter in Volleyball and Softball and a four-year starter in Basketball, while also serving as Captain.

In Volleyball Jennifer started as the team’s middle hitter and those teams dominated opponents in a very tough conference and section. During her senior season, she starred on a team that was 30 & 3 as the first team from Upsala High School to reach the state tournament, placing 6th. Jennifer was a very

our prayer life. When things are going the way we want them to go and there are no serious problems to deal with, it’s easy to “let up” on the time we spend with God in prayer.

This life style is not uncommon. In fact, the Psalmist came to the same conclusion when he wrote, “But as for me, it is good to be near God.” We have all met people in life that keep everyone at a distance. Whether they don’t want to know us or they don’t want us to know them may never be clear. But we feel the separation and there is not much, if anything, we can do about it. So, we move on.

But with God it is different. We can get as close to Him as we desire. In fact, we all know that drawing close to God is something that He wants us to do. His gracious invitation “to come to me” is always available.

Because life is like an “incline” if we are not walking upward toward Him we are slipping downward away from Him. My mother once said to me, “Larry, if you are not as close to God as you once were, you are the one who has moved.” And she added, “Draw close to Him and He will get closer to you.”

God not only waits for us to come to Him, but seeks us.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

New State Ditch-Mowing Regulations Defy Belief On occasion, a rule comes down from somewhere in government and the reaction from most folks is one of disbelief, or “this can’t be true.”

I think that pretty well sums up the feeling of many toward the recent announcement from MnDOT concerning the mowing of road ditches. In the name of saving habitat for birds and pollinators, the state agency has come up with a series of regulations that almost defy belief.

Starting this year, anyone who wants to mow and bale road ditch hay in a state right-of-way must apply for a permit from MnDOT, and they must do so yet this month. If one doesn’t apply to cut the hay in state ditches that borders one’s land, for example, it will be opened up for anyone to apply for a permit to cut those areas.

I visited with one resident who told me that he’s cut and baled the ditches along the state highway that runs along his land for the past 30 years. No questions asked.

He’s just done it and been able to harvest some low cost hay for his livestock and saved the state from having to do it.

To back up a bit, here’s the background on this situation. There has been a state law on the books for years that says road ditches can’t be cut before Aug. 1 to allow pheasants to nest in ditches and also to maintain habitat for bees. For the most part, at least up until now, that law hasn’t been enforced. And, anyone who knows about ditch hay for livestock feed knows that if they wait until August to cut that grass, it will be too dry and the feed value will be very low. So, for years when the state went out and made its safety cut along the top of the ditch, farmers would follow by cutting the rest of the ditch.

That’s usually in early July, when the grass still has some value.

Now, because of new rule making, MnDOT will be issuing permits for ditch mowing that cannot start before August.

They are also requiring tractors being

used to cut the hay be equipped with a particular type of flashing light, and the operator in the tractor must wear a certain color safety vest. The topper among these new regulations is that the person who cuts and bales the hay must take out a liability insurance policy and name the state as beneficiary.

I’m not making this up.

These are the actual new rules by which residents will be allowed to cut state road ditches. I’m wondering who’s going to enforce these rules if someone defies them by cutting early or isn’t wearing the right colored safety vest. I’ve also been told that most farmers’ standard insurance policies already cover them while doing this, and naming the state as a beneficiary is an added expense.

Then there’s the issue of not allowing noxious weeds to go to seed, which is also state law. Will all the thistle patches and wild parsnip have to be sprayed from now on if mowing is ineffective?

Stay tuned on this topic. Several bills are being drafted to make changes to this set of rules. They represent overreach by government and need to be scaled back.

I am also in favor of allowing ditches to be cut earlier in the summer than the current date of August 1. There is the issue of safety and line-of-sight, especially at intersections, in addition to noxious weed concerns and the declining feed value of the hay.

The Agriculture Policy and the Natural Resources and Environment Committees will hold a joint hearing on Minnesota’s controversial buffer law this Thursday.

In addition to taking other testimony, we will get updates from state agencies on the progress made so far, especially the buffer maps being done by the DNR and also on alternative practices, which are being worked on by BOWSR. After High School, Jennifer attended Rasmussen Business College to graduate with a degree in Accounting. She currently works at Blattner Energy, Inc. in Avon.

After graduating from college she married Ross Rademacher and together they have two beautiful children: Annali and Callan. Her parents are Gerry and Mary Jane Boeckermann.

Chris Leners graduated from Upsala High School in 1992 and lettered in Baseball, Basketball and Football.

Chris was a four-year starter in Football and during his career he rushed for 3500 plus yards and scored 35 touch downs! Chris is remembered as a bruising runner with a style that punished anyone willing to try and tackle him. As a linebacker, his hard hitting sent many running backs to the sidelines! Chris served as Captain, received All-Conference awards, plus his senior year he was chosen Conference MVP and also selected to the out-of-state football team.

In baseball Chris was a four-year starter at pitcher and short stop. Known as a hard throwing pitcher that could strike out the side and a hitter that could hit for a high average. He was a two-year Conference and a two-year All-Section player.

In Basketball, he was a three-year letter winner, two-year starter, and a two-year All-Conference player. His senior season, he averaged 11 points and 13 rebounds per game.

After graduating, Chris attended Itasca Community College. At Itasca he started on the football team and earned

The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9th, 2017 by Mayor Ronald Strassburg.

The first order of business was to swear in the new member of the City Council, Mitchell Bruggenthies. Mitchell read and signed the Oath of Office and began his term with the Burtrum City Council.

Next, the meeting minutes from the December 5th, 2016 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet.

The finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded

by Beau Krueger. The City Council then discussed outstanding and routine bills and upon a motion made

by Beau Krueger and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, the bills were paid.

The City Council discussed old business. One topic of discussion included yet again the possibility of bringing natural gas to the City. Mayor Strassburg has been in contact with the company and was informed that informational material would be supplied to the City if and when the company is prepared to potentially expand their service area to the City. We ask for patience with this matter as we are working on it.

In addition, the topic of increased numbers of vehicles in resident’s yards was discussed. As a friendly reminder, and per City Ordinance, the City Council would like to remind residents that all vehicles should/must be licensed, current on tabs, and registered.

The City Council then discussed several new topics. The first topic was wage increases to both the City Clerk and Mayor’s monthly wages. The City Council approved to increase the City Clerk’s wage by $75 per month to accommodate for travel. Please note that this will replace the previous practice of paying per mile and was mutually agreed upon by both the City Council and the City Clerk. This will also be a more cost

effective approach for the City in the long run. Furthermore, the City approved to increase the Mayor’s monthly compensation by $50 to accommodate for his increased use of his personal phone for business purposes. Please note that this also replaces the previous practice and does not increase the monthly costs to expenses, as this was previously approved in a prior meeting. These changes were approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Beau Krueger, upon vote motion carried.

The second new business topic discussed was determining who was to serve on the several serving committees. The City Council decided to leave all committees are they currently are with the expectation of building permits. Previously, building permits needed to be obtained from the City Clerk, however, the decision was made to change it to they could be obtained from either the City Clerk or Mayor. Therefore, moving forward those potentially needing a building permit are encouraged to reach out to either the City Clerk or Mayor. Next, the City Clerk requested approval to continue the partnership with the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for the remainder of the year for assistance and guidance. The City Clerk’s request was approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Beau Krueger.

The next topic of discussion was attendance and expectations as they relate to the City Council.

This resulted in Resolution 17.1 in which highlights and discusses the attendance expectations for the City Council. The expectation is that all members attend all monthly meeting and all others that are deemed necessary for the successful operation of the City. We acknowledge that understandable/emergency situations do arise in which someone may not be able to attend. These occurrences are to be judged by City Council and to remain confidential.

Members whom miss a meeting and/or meetings will not be compensated for the missed meetings.

The City Council will review any member’s attendance record should an individual miss more than three meetings per year and necessary action will be voted upon by the City Council Members. Should an individual miss more than three meetings per year the Council can make the decision to end a Council Members term and appoint and/or hold a special election should it be necessary.

The final topic of discussion included appointment of Kevin Rohde to the vacant City Council member position. This term is a two-year term. Kevin Rohde read and signed the Oath of Office and was sworn in to his appointed position. We would like to welcome the two new members to the City Council. As there was no further topics to discuss the meeting was adjourned by a motion made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet, upon vote motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.

Rep. Kresha Applauds Education Broadband Grants Representative Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, issued the following statement regarding the recent announcement from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) that 12 school districts in Greater Minnesota will receive state grants to expand broadband access.

According to a press release from DEED, the state will invest $500,000 in rural school districts to help bridge the technological divide. Districts can use the grants to install wireless hotspots on buses for students with long commutes to and from school. The origin of the ini-

tiative comes from a Republican-led proposal from the 2016 legislative session.

“I am pleased to see that Governor Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith are recognizing my initiatives to improve broadband access for students,” said Kresha.

“Our goal with this initiative was to give students a chance to stay connected and have access to their homework while on their lengthy bus commutes. It’s a big step in helping these young learners keep pace technologically with the metro area. I anticipate further support from the Governor’s office to improve educational broadband access going forward.”

I don’t want to be mean, but how can I approach her about this situation?

-Alice Dear Alice, I understand that you don’t want to be mean to a friend, but situations like this should be addressed quickly and directly. No matter whether you’re talking about friendships or business dealings, to be unclear is to be unkind.

Turn off the television, sit down with her, and have a kind but firm conversation. Let her know that the roommate agreement is no longer working because she isn’t paying her bills on time. Make sure she understands that the two of you are not going to be able to stay there together anymore unless she starts paying on time. You might also ask if she needs help budgeting her money. I mean, if she’s got a good job her money has to be going somewhere, right? The problem is that it’s not going to the proper places.

I know you think that by being subtle or avoiding the situation you’re being nice, but you’re not. You’re being passive-aggressive. You just have to smile and say, “This isn’t going to happen anymore. You’re going to get your act together, and I’ll help you all I can, but you need to start paying on time or the roommate situation is over.”

We are able to save about $20,000 a year, so we could have the house paid off in just over four years. She likes the idea of having lots of money saved up, but I would love to be completely debtfree. Should we pay off the house or hang on to the savings?

-Jason Dear Jason, Let’s pretend your house is already paid for in full. Would you borrow on your home so that you had enough cash that your wife liked it? You say you wouldn’t, so what’s the difference? If you had a paid-for house and you wouldn’t borrow on it to have cash laying around to feel better, why wouldn’t you use the cash laying around to pay off the house?

It’s the same thing.

The first thing you want to consider is having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. You also need to make sure you’re putting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement.

Other than that, if you have enough cash laying around to pay off your home and you don’t, it’s the same thing as having borrowed on your home in order to have cash laying around.

If I’m in your shoes, as soon as the emergency fund is in place — six months of expenses since your wife likes the security factor — and 15 percent is being put away for retirement, I’d take the other money and throw it at the house. Get that thing paid off as fast as you can!

Long Prairie’s Telestroke/Vascular Neurology Clinic Expands to 8 Communities The Telestroke/Vascular Neurology Clinic is achieving its expansion goals in the second year of a program made possible by a $540,000 three-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Rural Health Care Services Outreach Grant Program.

Since late 2015, post-stroke and TIA (transient ischemic attack) patients receiving follow-up care at CentraCare Health – Long Prairie have been able to take advantage of a new telehealth patient navigator program. The primary goal of the program is to improve access to care and health outcomes among patients recovering from stroke or TIA who reside in Chippewa, Pope, Swift, Todd, Wadena, and parts of Stearns counties in Central Minnesota.

While the program is based out of Long Prairie, a total of four CentraCare locations, including Paynesville, Melrose and Sauk Centre, all ramped at the same time. Then, in December 2016, Glacial Ridge Health System in Glenwood’s program was implemented. Tri-County Health’s program in Wadena is set to launch this month. This spring the Telestroke/Vascular Neurology Clinic services will expand to Swift County-Benson Health Services in Benson and Lakewood Health System in Staples.

When fully implemented, this program will be available in eight hospital and seven home care agencies in the grant’s service area.

than 40 patients have taken advantage of this telehealth service since the program began. About two-thirds of the patients have been male with the average age being 65, typical of the general stroke population.

“When the patients and providers in these rural locations notice the first signs of a stroke in the ER, they are referred immediately to a telestroke program site within the service area,” Zastrow noted.

Through the technology provided by telehealth equipment, a CentraCare stroke provider is able to assess and monitor the patients’ heart rates, breath sounds, observe mobility in arms and legs, and check vision and hearing.

Patients are enrolled in the program within five to seven days after they are discharged to their homes and Zastrow will work with the patient and his or her health care providers and family to manage the care needed. This may be done in the office face-to-face, via telephone, or via video-conferencing using telemedicine equipment.

Initially, patients choose their follow-up appointment through telemedicine for the convenience, but recently, some are finding it familiar as they experienced something similar in their local emergency department when they had a stroke,” Zastrow said.

Patients are able to stay in their hometowns and visit their primary care providers in local offices as they always have, but visits with specialists such as neurologists will be via the telehealth equipment.

Consider participating in the Foster Grandparent Program for an opportunity to mentor children and put joyful, rewarding experiences into your days!

January is National Mentoring month, and there is a need for more mentors in your communities. The Central MN Foster Grandparent Program offers adults, who are at least 55, an opportunity to work with children who need assistance at local schools, Head Starts, preschools, and other non-profit agencies.

ple who live in the Grey Eagle, Freeport, Albany and Melrose areas. “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” work under the direction of school or site staff, and enjoy welcoming, appreciative, positive environments offered by the locations where they serve.

A Foster Grandparent recently said, “If you come to school with a tear in your eye you will leave with laughter in your heart!”

The Foster Grandparent Program continually gives benefits to its participants. Benefits include tax-free money, plus a monetary reimbursement for driving or using a city bus to get to and from their service locations. You’ll get the health benefits of volunteering, and

The spring season lasts from Wednesday, April 12, to Wednesday, May 31, and has six time periods. Only firearms hunters age 18 and older who want to hunt during the first two time periods (A or B) need to apply by Jan. 27 for a spring turkey permit.

The sanctuary portions of Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area will be closed to turkey hunting and other public use for the first time this year, except for a special hunt for hunters with disabilities. Signs will mark the boundaries of these closed sanctuary areas. Carlos Avery WMA in Anoka and Chisago counties is turkey permit area 511.
