In praise of healthcare professionals -By Harvey Mackay Seems like every conversation these days begins with “How are you doing?” or “Are you managing to keep busy during lockdown?” And ends with “Stay safe!”

T h o s e questions have taken on new meaning for me, as I was recently hospitalized for 14 days with coronavirus. I am recovering well, thanks to wonderful medicines and incredibly attentive care by a team of doctors, nurses and hospital staff that I am guessing was not entirely sorry to see me go home.

I was exposed to the virus and was promptly tested. Negative. Repeated the test a couple days later. Again, negative. Then the next day I started to feel ill. This time, the test was positive, and because of a couple of issues, my doctor decided to admit me to the Mayo Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz.

I am not a patient patient. Understand, in a COVID unit, there are no visitors.

There is no walking the halls for a change of scenery. There is no business as usual, which for me, is torture. It’s surreal, and at times, frightening.

But this is not a story about being sick; this is about how the hospital and healthcare providers and staff adjusted to accommodate patients. They truly are healthcare heroes.

From my business perspective, they are also champions of customer service and being resourceful for clients/ customers (patients) in the face of extreme circumstances. Teamwork is evident everywhere.

challenging patient, and every one was kind, caring and gracious. They all had to change clothes every time they entered a different room – hospital garb, gloves, masks and face shields. If they go outside your room and come back a minute later, they have to change again. Therefore, they don’t come to your room unless you really need something.

The door to the room is never opened for more than a couple of seconds. They don’t want air to get out in the hallway. You can’t poke your head out the door to ask a question. There was a computer screen in front of my bed where I was monitored every second. Most communication is through that monitor, at the touch of a button.

And no matter how pesky I got, the rules were there for my protection. Let me give you an example. My doctor was in to see me, and when he left he said he had to see a patient next door. As soon as he left, I thought of something else and wrote a note and asked the nurse to give it to him. The nurse kindly explained that you can’t even take a piece of paper out of the room.

I was fortunate also to have the ear of my daughter-in-law’s brother, Aaron Stern, a doctor at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, N.Y., which is affiliated with Mt. Sinai. Dr. Stern was working at least 12-hour days, seven days a week at peak. He’s been helping coronavirus patients for nine months and shared information on treatment options and provided explanations on the course of the disease. I wanted to know everything about this illness.

It’s fair to say I am not used to being away from my office and limited in activity.

I was so eager to get back to work, and business was waiting. I didn’t have time to be sick. But this amazing group of people took my attitude in stride. I guess that’s what you call healing body and mind.

I’ve always had tremendous respect for those in the medical profession who

aren’t afraid to treat people with horrible conditions without concern for their own well-being. This pandemic has tested all of us, but the doctors, nurses and healthcare workers have had a challenge that few of us will ever have to face.

To say I was impressed with the experience would be an understatement. I am so grateful that we have this level of care available. I am thankful for the researchers who have made remarkable discoveries in the treatment, and soon, prevention of this disease.

And I will always be indebted to my family and friends who continue to watch out for me and make me stop and smell the roses.

My life is settling down now, and I am convalescing at home. I hope to get back to near normal in the next 30 days. The outcome could have been very different, and I realize how lucky I am.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Horses and Cars

There was a time when the local residents were not able to simply jump in the car and allow the vehicle to carry them in dry, temperaturecontrolled comfort to their destination. Travel, even locally, has changed and I don’t think it will go back to the old ways.

Horses were usually involved when someone wanted to go somewhere without walking. The horse, just because of what it is, is somewhat hazardous to humans. Starting at the front end, a horse can deliver a serious bite to a handler. When hooking up to the halter, it is somehow able to locate your foot and place it’s weight on it. When one gets to the midsection, the horse will expand it’s belly, so the harness will be loose when the air is released. If the saddle is not tightened securely to the midsection it is possible to find oneself riding upside down under the horse. (Not something you want to happen when others are watching.) There is also some harness items which need to be secured at the rear end of the horse. Anyone that has spent time near the rear end of a horse has

In a democracy, every citizen has the right to speak up, share their viewpoint and opinions, and have an influence in what laws we all live by. And, in a democracy, every citizen can feel the security and satisfaction of knowing those laws will be enforced in the same way for everyone. The people I know want this. We want the kind of law and order that only can happen in a democracy.

Anarchy, with no government, and thus no system to restrict anyone’s freedom sounds good to many people. But with no laws and no meaningful consequences as a deterrent, people can fall into a selfishness that hurts others. A famous study some years ago reported what to many was a shocking percentage of men who said they would commit rape if they knew they could get away with it.

Besides a higher risk for exploitation and brutality, Anarchy means no system for basics like road construction and maintenance, or public health and safety. Who among us, except perhaps bullies and exploiters, really wants to live with the so-called freedom of having no law and order?

An Authoritarian government has organized bullying. We have many in our world.

A few people at the top make and enforce laws on everyone else. People who want this kind of power over others are self-serving. In authoritarian regimes, we see corruption and privilege at the top, protected with a military.

Questioning and criticism of the government by journalists, protesters, or ordinary citizens stating opinions is treated as a threat and often punished with jail, torture and death. Even privileged insiders risk such punishment if they displease a ruler or are seen as a threat.

The ruling party is often the only party allowed. In an authoritarian government, bullies rule and no one is safe.

In an Apartheid government, people are assigned into groups, usually by race, religion, or ethnicity. The privileged group at the top also needs a military to keep the rest of the people under their control. The ruling group might have a democracy and the freedoms that come with it for themselves, but they place restrictions on everyone else, sometimes very severe, with severe punishments. Often it is set up so that the work people at the bottom do keeps them in poverty as profits go to the top.

Democracy for some isn’t democracy at all.

It’s an understatement to say that Authoritarian and Apartheid governments are rigged systems. Democracy is designed to be the op-

In many cases the road was a trail across country with many corners, swamps, rivers and hills. The trail was marked by two wagon wheel tracks, which showed the driver a safe trail to follow. The old wagons sometimes broke down, which required some tools on the wagon.

What about meeting another wagon in the swamp? Plans were required to determine who had the best opportunity to safely pull off the trail to let the other pass. Remembering that backing up a horse and wagon was not easy. There was always the possibility that the horses would be startled by an animal, bees or something that they didn’t recognize causing them to run off in a panic. This was not good for either the wagon or passengers.

Horses didn’t burn gasoline, so the posite. Of course lots of things can go wrong in a democracy.

A true democracy is when every adult has the same right to participate in the political process, and the same freedoms and protection under the law. This happens naturally if no one gets in the way to stop it.

Participation in the political process requires the right to free speech, with some protection from threats and libel. Everyone who wants to needs to be able to contribute their ideas, opinions and perspectives, which then requires listening and discussion, with decisions made by whoever wants to vote with each vote counting equally.

Of course large populations, need to conduct this process in even smaller groups chosen fairly, to do the final voting on laws that affect everyone. And individuals speaking up continues throughout.

The more people participate and understand others, the more they can appreciate a free and fair process where things don’t always go their way.

An elderly lady I admire explained that a democracy needs more than one party. When her party loses, she doesn’t get upset. She says our country needs change. It happens that when her party wins, mine loses. And yet we appreciate each other. We each grew up learning Jesus’ teachings and follow this in our lives. We both believe that all people are God’s children. We both love our country and want our democracy to operate well.

When laws are enforced differently between one group of citizens and another group, this isn’t a democracy working well. Millions of people around the world and here at home who admire and love our country came together to protest the persistent pattern of injustice that we suffer here over skin color.

In May of last year, bystanders had witnessed a horrific killing they were helpless to stop. The four men in charge of it were nonchalant, determined and snickering. George Floyd being fearful, polite, unbelieved and discounted, was held to the cement, his life flickering out as he said again and again that he couldn’t breathe. Giving up in the end, he called instead to his mother in Heaven.

After the arrest of the four, as the protests continued, one man wondered aloud, “What do they want?”

Dear man with your head in the sand, and your seat in the Senate, go and ask them to explain it to you. And then ask yourself, “What do you want?” If you get the right answer, go and make it happen.

Most of us, if we think about it, will choose democracy with the same law and order for all. Really, there’s no other kind.

government didn’t get the revenue from the gas taxes. As time went by, more cars appeared, more gas was consumed and more gas taxes were paid. More improved roads appeared.

Recently there has been a concentrated effort in improving and resurfacing the roads in our area. We all know that the cost of these improvements will deplete the highway maintenance funds. As a result, these funds will again be replaced, so we can expect a need to increase future gas taxes.

Oh well, it beats driving horses on a two track trail creating more methane gas to cause global warming.

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the December Senior High Student of the Month, senior Anthony Sobiech. Anthony is the son of John and Elizabeth Sobiech. He enjoys drawing and listening to music.

Anthony plans to attend University of MN Morris to eventually become an elementary teacher. Anthony participates in a variety of school activities, including playing football since seventh grade, a valued member of the robotics team his junior and senior year and track since he was a sophomore.

Outside of school, Anthony has recently taken a tutoring role with a younger student.

He has volunteered at SAB meat raffles. His favorite thing about school is the opportunities he has been given to boost his future goals. His achievements include being on the A and B Honor roll, and lettering in football.

Jeffrey H. “Jeff” Middendorf

Jeffrey H. “Jeff” Middendorf, age 63 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at his home in Grey Eagle, Minnesota, after a short battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 15 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Friday at the church Melrose.

Jeffrey Henry Middendorf was born June 14, 1957 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Conrad “Connie” and Ethel (Herzog) Middendorf. He attended Melrose High School and served in the armed forces for a short time before being medically discharged. Jeff worked at Long Prairie Packing, Jennie-O in Melrose, and the Melrose Feed Mill. He loved hunting and fishing, going to the casino, and going to sporting events with his sons.

Survivors include his sons, Travis Middendorf of Grey Eagle and Trevor (fiancé, Rachel Strzelecki) Middendorf of Sartell; stepson, William Boyes of Grey Eagle; girlfriend, Jeanie Boyes of Grey Eagle; stepgrandchildren, Molly and Gabe Tickler of Ohio; brothers and sisters, Daniel Middendorf of Upsala, JoAnn (David) Voller of Upsala, Dennis Middendorf of Melrose, Glen Middendorf of Melrose, and Diane (Allen) Herzog of Upsala.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Judy Middendorf; and Godson, Eric Middendorf.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tim Voller, Devin Voller, Brandon Voller, Brianna Middendorf, Sarah Herzog, and Miranda Kulzer. Cross bearer will be Nick Herzog and scripture bearer will be Matt Herzog.

Donna M. Hinnenkamp

Donna M. Hinnenkamp, age 72 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 8, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota after a 10-year courageous battle with cancer.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Donna Marie Lahr was born September 20th, 1948 in Sartell, Minnesota to Andrew and Clara (Lorenz) Lahr. She graduated from St. Cloud Cathedral High School and obtained her bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University. Donna was united in marriage to Wilfred Hinnenkamp (second marriage for each of them) on December 12, 1979 in Douglas County and shortly after moved to Melrose, Minnesota. In 1986 Donna and her family moved to Meire Grove, where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Donna was a social individual who was passionate about interacting with and helping others. Throughout her life, she worked as a saleswoman at the Melrose Beacon and Gordon’s Jewelers, a caretaker for individuals with developmental disabilities, a plant worker at Melrose Dairy Proteins, and a caring and supportive Mom and Grandmother (although she would never have called that a job). During her retirement and battle with cancer, she also worked as a cashier at Walmart because she missed the social interaction with colleagues and customers that accompanied her previous sales jobs.

Donna was a devout member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

She enjoyed building relationships with others, music and dancing, traveling, gardening, walks outdoors, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Wilfred Hinnenkamp of Meire Grove; brother, Vern Lahr of White Bear, Minnesota; sons, Chad (Melissa) Rowe of Wyoming, Minnesota, and Jay Hinnenkamp of Murfreesboro, Tennesse; stepchildren, Jeff, Gwen (Marson) Michels, Bruce (Debbie), Brian (Trina), Scott (Diane), Shannon, Mark, Wayne (Rowena); and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Victor & Dell; and faithful companion, Michiko.

Donna’s sense of humor, kindness, and dedication to her family will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Maurice Joseph Wenker was born March 17, 1926 in Albany, Minnesota to Bernard and Juliana (Hoeschen) Wenker. He graduated from Albany High School in 1944 and enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 2, 1944. Max served in the 96th Infantry Division known as “The Deadeyes” during World War II. He was united in marriage to June Kramer on September 6, 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Max was Postmaster at the Freeport Post office until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. After retirement, Max and June enjoyed traveling to Texas during the winter months. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting, and playing cards, especially cribbage.

Survivors include his sons, David Wenker of Los Angeles, California and M.J. (Paula) Wenker of Hastings; grandchildren, Ben (Tori), Allison, and Charles Wenker; and brother, Al (Marge) Wenker of Albany.

Max was preceded in death by his wife, June Wenker on October 13, 2012; parents; sons, John Wenker on February 25, 2020 and Stephen Wenker on August 7, 2019; sisters, Marie Dirkes, Clara Meyer, and Della Ehlert; and brothers, Joseph and William Wenker.

Ervin Joseph Chromey was born February 4, 1927. He passed away peacefully on December 25, 2020.

Ervin was born to Joseph and Josephine (Eiynck) Chromey on the family farm in Grey Eagle Township on Mary Lake. Ervin enjoyed spending time at the cabin fishing and listening to Polka music.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen (Koroll); brothers, Norbert, Roman, Leander, and Edward; sisters, Leona (MacArthur), Caroline (Briol), Louise (Mager), Juletta (Rakotz), and Irene (Czech).

He was born May 1, 1952 in Brooklyn, New York the son of John and Mary (D’Allsandro) Casazza. Upsala City • January 4, 2021 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Elect Rollie Johnson, Council Elect Lana Bartells, Crystal Benson, Brian Lange, and Council Elect Mitch Lange.

People present: MC Record reporter Tyler Ohmann, Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss, First Response Vice President Andrea Douvier, First Response Team President Garrett Doucette, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Oaths of Office: Stevens swore in Rollie Johnson as two-year term Mayor for 2021-2022 and presented him with a Certificate of Election.

Stevens swore in Lana Bartells as four-year term Council Member for 2021-2024 and presented her with a Certificate of Election.

Bartells moved to purchase fourteen sets of turnout gear not to exceed $48,000, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

First Response Team: First Response Team Vice President Douvier reported on the interview process for new members, trainings as well as the transition into new officer rolls.

The First Response Team has access to the COVID-19 vaccinations if they choose to receive it.

The Council reviewed the proposed updated bylaws and standard operating guidelines for the First Response Team.

Benson moved to approve the changes to the First Response Team’s SOG’s and By-Laws, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the City.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the January Calendar, explained the current city office hours. She also stated that over $800.00 of Upsala Bucks were purchased for gifts.

Swanville City • December 8, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor, and Tony Maciej.

Also present: Randy Drayna, Clif Allen via zoom, John Dragseth and reporter Tyler Ohmann.

Minutes from the November 10, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Randy Drayna was present to find out the procedures of putting in another approach to his residence on Forest Hill Lane to the west of his existing driveway. An 18” culvert will need to be installed and be 30’ from the property line. Drayna would like to have a 24’ driveway put in. Drayna will return with the land use permit filled out for the driveway.

Clif Allen, city engineer, reported on the city’s new water tower. An email from the USDA sounded very promising the City of Swanville would receive the $2 million funding for the water tower project, an $800,000.00 to $900,000.00 grant and $1.1 to $1.2 million would be a low interest loan. Allen explained the city hiring an outside company to do a hydro analysis, which would determine better where to locate a new well to replace well 1. This service would cost approximately $15,000.00. The next step in the tower project is to authorize Moore Engineering to create a preliminary engineering report (PER). This report will include deciding the benefits of having a ground or tower water supplier and be completed sometime in July. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to hire Moore Engineering to create a PER and hire Leonard Rice Engineering to do a hydro analysis for the city. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The final levy for 2021 was discussed. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to raise the general service for 2021 $5000.00. The final levy for 2021 is set at general fund $91,000.00 and the debt service amounts is set at $9,943.25 and $24,792.00 for a total amount of $125,735.25. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The 2021 budget was looked at. Deb Wood made a motion to accept the 2021 budget. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange read to the council the Morrison County Animal Humane Agreement. Norm Carlson made a motion to not sign the Animal Humane Agreement, to pay as an animal is taken in instead. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

the city hire a lawn care service rather than buy a new mower. Jim Molitor will report back to council on the cost.

Elwood Damn, who has cleaned the city buildings for years has decided to retire. An ad will be put in the paper for applications for this cleaning position. The buildings included will be Swanville Community Center, Swanville Center and the City Park Building. The City of Swanville Council thanks Elwood for his many years of cleaning the city buildings.

The council also says good bye to Deb Wood and thanked her for her service to the City of Swanville for serving as council member since 2016. The council welcomes John Dragseth who will replace Wood’s position.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Julie Hollermann, City Clerk/Treasurer Burnhamville Township • November 24, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held November 24, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of October 27, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit.

Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letters stating county weed report is due, Grey Eagle Fire department meeting is Nov 30, opening on the Todd County planning and zoning board for our district, and notices of October and November taxes received.

A motion was made by Sup. Muellner to pay all bills numbered 6005 through 6026: Rev. $3,903.05; R & B $8,584.86. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

Bass Lake access improvements were started and more will be done in spring.

The township ditches had debris in them. Sup. Berscheit picked up several appliances and tires and hauled them to the county waste site. Residents should properly dispose of unwanted items at local recycling or garbage places.

For the general election on November 3 the township had a good turnout of 388 voters.

The CARES Grants reports are completed and extra funds are returned to the county for them to use as needed.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve Resolution 2020-3 for the annual polling place designation as the Burtrum Community Center. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report the chair completed the annual weed report. No signs were found to improve the safety of traffic on 341st Ave. New culverts and beaver issues are working okay. Roads are being monitored for conditions.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $63,773.87.

Sup. Johnson motioned to approve and Sup. Berscheit seconded motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:33 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

In attendance was Ron Strassburg, Kevin Rohde, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the December 7th 2020 meeting were read and a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Sara Macho to approve the minutes, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

gas provider attend a city meeting. They also discussed community activities/events that would draw business to the area. Also, discussed was an option to post a Community Events Calendar and a Rental Contract for the Burtrum Community Hall on a bulletin board and online.

Old Business – Discussed topic related to the November City Election, MN Statutes, dogs off leashes being a burden to neighbors and the city ordinance.

Since no further topics needed to be discussed the meeting was adjourned by a motion from Sharon Erickson and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Work Place Accident: January 8, 2021: At approximately 5:21 p.m. the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an accident at the address of 36177 County Rd. 186 in Melrose Township. This address is located approximately 2 miles west of the city of Melrose. When responding officers arrived on scene, they found a male, identified as Keith Deane Kingsley, 32, of Melrose, who was entangled and trapped in the power take off (PTO) shaft of the tractor he was using.

Kingsley had been operating the tractor, pulling a trailer, while sanitizing the interior of a turkey barn. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The incident remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Melrose Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Melrose Fire Department, and Melrose Ambulance Service.

Morrison Co. Sheriff’s Office

Predatory Offenders: Sheriff Shawn Larsen announced that his office, in cooperation with all local police departments in the county, have recently completed the annual Predatory Offender Registration (POR) verifications for Morrison County. Each year the sheriff’s office organizes a verification check for all predatory offenders who are on the registry and residing within the county. It is important to note that Minnesota only began registering predatory offenders in 1991 and did not assign risk level until 1997. Only those offenders who have been sentenced to prison and who were released after January 1, 1997 have been assigned a risk level. Offenders sentenced to probation or juvenile offenders are not assigned a risk level. Level 1 offenders are those deemed by Department of Corrections officials as those least likely to re-offend while Level 3 offenders are considered most likely to re-offend.

During the most recent round of checks, multiple predatory offenders were checked in Morrison County. 53 predatory offenders were checked by the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, Pierz Police Department, Motley Police Department and Royalton Police Department. Of that number; 23 were Level 1 offenders, 8 were Level 2, 1 was Level 3 and 21 offenders were not assigned a risk level.

45 predatory offenders were checked by the Little Falls Police Department, which are not part of the breakdown.

All but 4 individuals were found to be compliant with conditions imposed upon them. 40-year-old Amanda Ann Tesch, 52-year-old Terry Lee Lind, 45-year-old Lee Allan Oppegard, and 52-year-old Mickey Joseph Morisch have been charged for failing to register their current addresses, which is a felony. According to Sheriff Larsen it is important for us to keep tabs on the predatory offender registry. “I feel it is extremely important that these people remain aware that we know who they are, and our office will continue to hold them accountable.”

Dear Motor Medics, I want to get my wife a remote start for her 2010 Acura MDX but I need to do some research first. I have been told that adding anything to my car which has only 20k miles on it will void the warranty. I have never had a remote start, but it seems like almost everyone I know has one.

It cannot be that all of them have no warranty. Is there anything I should look out for when getting one as far as the kind of unit that will or won’t work with my car?

When you have a remote car-starter installed make sure the shop that does it for you has trained installers who know your car. The shop should also have the technical support of a reputable company who stands behind the starters they sell. These things ensure that you will not have an issue with your warranty. On the other hand, we have seen many do it yourself installers create issues with the vehicles sensitive electronics that resulted in expensive dealership repair costs. When choosing a unit make sure you get one with the features you want such as the range you need; too short and you won’t be happy.

Dear Mark, It is common to have several choices of brake pads available but to avoid confusion with customers I take the time to explain the difference between pads and note that pad X is the factory specified pad. When there is a choice it is usually a ceramic pad, a semi-metallic pad, and an organic pad. One will be what the factory specifies for the car while the other two can help cut noise and/ or brake dust or save some cash. New rotors have really come down in price and many shops do not machine them any longer as they wear so fast that they are often too thin to machine or severely rusted from the elements which necessitates their replacement.

If the rotors still have enough material and not too much run-out, they can be machined but the cost may be close to what you will spend to replace them, and they will be thinner so the next replacement may come sooner. Don’t forget cheaper is not better when it comes to brakes.

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the December Junior High Student of the Month, ninth grade student Morgan Bellefeuille.

Morgan is the son of Molly and Kris Bellefeuille.

He enjoys playing sports, collecting sports cards, playing video games and just hanging out with family and friends.

He plans to attend college for some form of engineering. Morgan’s favorite thing about school is learning new things every day, and

Morgan has played football, basketball and track since seventh grade. He is also a three-year veteran of the school play. Student council has been fortunate to have him as a member since his eighth-grade year. He is consistently on the A Honor Roll.

Social Studies teacher Tom Bzdok says, “I have enjoyed having Morgan in class the last several years. He is a positive upbeat student who is quick witted and a lot of fun to be around, but he also takes class seriously. He is always focused and works hard to achieve good grades. 2021 session looks ‘anything but ordinary’ at start

By State Rep. Paul Anderson The opening day of session last week was anything but ordinary. With only limited numbers allowed on the House floor, most representatives were hooked up online in their offices.

We took our oath of office in shifts, with eight or nine members at a time being sworn in by Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Thissen. Even though much of the pomp and circumstance was missing from the usual swearing-in ceremony, it was still a thrill taking the oath and finally getting the new session underway!

With this being a budget year, coming up with a detailed plan on how the state will operate financially over the next two years is topic No. 1. With the economy still being affected

by COVID-19, next month’s budget forecast takes on added importance.

Current estimates have Minnesota looking at a $1.3 billion shortfall for the new biennium set to start in July. Unlike the federal government, we cannot operate in a negative fashion, so one of two things must happen as the new budget is finalized. Either spending will be reduced, or tax collections will increase. Of course, there could be various combinations of the two but, one way or the other, the budget adopted must be balanced. Other things that could also be utilized are the edu-

cation shift, a hiring freeze, and an increase in fees charged by the state.

Ever since House sessions have gone virtual, one thing that’s been cumbersome is the method of voting. With 134 members, a roll call with every member’s name being called takes a great deal of time; usually around 20 minutes for every vote. Most resolutions and amendments, along with the actual bills themselves, were voted on by utilizing this method.

With the new session comes new technology. Each member has been issued a fingerprint reader and have had two of our fingers registered with this new system. Now, when a vote is taken, we use the fingerprint reader to verify who we are, and then vote online. It was used for the first time last Thursday and, for the most part, it worked well. It didn’t save a lot of time as there were still members voting the old way, but when all the kinks get worked out, it should speed up the process of voting.

Our nation was rocked to its core last Wednesday when the U.S. Capitol was over-ridden by protesters in what was an unacceptable display of criminal activity. Shocking images of vandalism and violence from inside the building itself left many thinking that this couldn’t possibly be happening in our country. In a testament to America’s underlying strength, however, Congress was able to reconvene later that same day and resume its work. Our country is deeply divided and, somehow, we must begin the process of healing those divisions.
