An egotist has I trouble -By Harvey Mackay Jim Tunney, the dean of National Football League referees, wrote a blog recently that caught my eye.

He mentioned how when one NFL defensive player intercepts a pass, most of the defensive unit on the field runs to an end zone for a photo op. These players and many others feel the defensive unit is just taking pride in making a big play.

However, a fan wrote to Tunney, describing such tactics as showmanship and unnecessary. Then he asked how he should explain to his teenage son what pride is and how to define it.

Tunney had a great response: “Pride is like faith. You can’t touch it, but you can see it if you know what to look for. A simile might be that it is like carbon monoxide – colorless, odorless and tasteless. Intoxicating might be an apt word in that pride can be good or bad.”

Tunney created a PRIDE acronym. “P” was for personal power; “R” for responsibility (not blaming others); “I” for innovation (you predict the future by creating it); “D” is design (an action plan to achieve); “E” for everyone (as in T*E*A*M -Together Everyone Accomplishes More). Each of us needs all of us!

Pride is a complicated emotion. It can propel people to great accomplishments while also causing some to behave horrendously.

Some people believe pride is the only disease that makes everyone sick except the one who has it.

Jessica Tracy, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia, says the darker side of pride traces back to ancient religious scholars. She said: “In the Bible, pride is deadly. Dante saw it as a deadly sin.”

In her book, “Take Pride: Why the Deadly Sin Holds the Secret to Human Success,” Tracy writes about two different kinds of pride: “Hubristic pride and authentic pride.” The problematic hubristic pride is about arrogance and egotism. Insecurity is a chief culprit.

Tracy says authentic pride “is what

motivates us to work hard and achieve. I like to think of it as a carrot, this thing that we want to feel in our sense of self. We feel it when we’re doing or working or putting in the effort to become the person that we want to be.”

Most often, pride has a negative perception. With Tracy’s definition, it should be a positive. There is nothing negative in taking pride in your work, your achievements or your employees.

Pride to me is being self-confident, but not egotistical. Pride is having a positive, cando attitude because you will settle for nothing less than your level best.

I always admired Bud Grant, former Hallof-Fame coach of the Minnesota Vikings, who told his players to “act like you’ve been there before” when they made a big play. In other words, the person who has the right to boast doesn’t have to, because the quality of their work demonstrates the pride they take in a job well done.

These are the elements of positive pride that I recommend: • Build a reputation for good work. My father Jack always told me, "You spend your whole lifetime building a good name and reputation, and one foolish act can destroy it."

• Embrace your role. Find meaning in what you do and see the big picture of how you fit in. Teamwork is critically important in business and many parts of life.

• Continue to improve. I’m a big believer in continuous education. You’re not in school once in a lifetime; you’re in school all your life.

• Stay true to yourself. History is full of people who showed great pride in working

hard, but when they reached the top, they forgot the people who helped them get there.

Craig Brian Larson tells the story of Pali, a bull that killed Jose Cubero, one of Spain's most brilliant matadors. Only 21 years old, Cubero had been enjoying a spectacular career. However, in this l958 bullfight, Jose made a tragic mistake. He thrust his sword a final time into a bleeding, delirious bull, which then collapsed. Considering the struggle finished, Jose turned to the crowd to acknowledge the applause. The bull, however, was not dead. One last time it rose and lunged at the unsuspecting matador, its horn piercing his back and puncturing his heart.

Just when we think we've finished off pride, just when we turn to accept the congratulations of the crowd, pride stabs us in the back. We should never consider pride dead before we are.

Mackay’s Moral: Pride is the only poison that is good for you when swallowed.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cooling Meat

Bad things s o m e t i m e s happened to the livestock on the farm. These things took the form of broken legs, birthing problems or injuries caused by other animals.

In the chicken barn, there was severe head pickings by the other birds, broken legs or possibly a thing we called a hen “blowout.”

We lived in a world that did not condone wasting. As a result, if the animal's chances of recovery were not good, the animal was butchered for food. If it was a chicken, the processing was easy and quickly fitted into the upcoming menu. However, if it was a beef animal or a hog this involved much more preparation and processing.

There was a time when there was no electricity to provide cooling for the processed food. In some cases there was an ice box available, but the ice melted quite rapidly.

Canning the meat was one solution, but it required jars and about 2 hours of cooking time in a pressure cooker. The pressure cooker would hold about 8 quarts and the preservation of 8 quarts, doesn't reduce a 500 pounds of beef very much. Pork was sometimes stored in stone jars covered by lard. Some of the meat could be stored in salt or salt brine and possibly smoked. No matter how many of these old time processing methods were used, it did require a lot of work and time. Remembering that this may have occurred at a time when our plans included other work projects. Imagine the problems created by needing to butcher a beef on the day when the thrashing crew was at your place and Mother had to make a noon meal for about 15 men. However, if she was planning to prepare chicken, why not prepare a couple more.

the processing was much easier. In cold weather, cooling the meat was easy. It was hung in a building secure from vermin or reduced to proper sized chunks, wrapped in paper and placed outdoors in a copper wash boiler or other secured container. The cover wasn't placed on the container until the meat was fully frozen.

After freezing, the containers were covered and placed in an outside area away from sunlight.

This method offered about 2.5 months of storage. During this time the meat could be dried, canned, salted, smoked or eaten, slowly eliminating the storage problem.

Remember, Don't Waste! It was said that every part of a hog was used except the squeal.

The tail and ears were cooked in sauerkraut. The feet were pickled. Hocks were smoked, made into baked beans or cooked with sauerkraut. The fat was rendered into lard. The head was washed and cooked to remove all eatable parts.

So sausage was created. It was composed primarily of items that were not necessarily easy to eat or were of parts of the pork or beef that needed additional grinding, spicing and smoking to make it taste good. As is said about today's wieners and bologna, you may be surprised to discover what the recipe includes.

Freezers make meat processing much easier. We are just too lazy to do all of the work involved in the processing. It's evidently easier to make money than it is to make meat.

I read an article the other day about a guy who had a lemon tree in his yard, but it did not produce lemons. For years he did all the right stuff to get his tree to produce the fruit. He fertilized, watered, pruned and still no fruit. One day, in frustration he planted an orange tree and suddenly, his lemon tree started to produce lemons. Now, one could put a human characteristic on this called jealousy, but plants are not human.

Here is what happened, as Monk would say. The Lemon tree had no cross-pollination.

Once the orange tree was planted, they both could pollinize each other and produce the expected fruit.

This illustrates for us the “Church!" None of us can be the church, unto ourselves, it takes a group of people to be the church. We need each other for encouragement and support.

Colossians 3:12-14 says “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord

forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” And then, as the church is encouraged you can repeat the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

FYI, God created community! He is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and He created community in everything He made. So, do not be an island all by yourself, but find one or two people you can trust and be intentional about encouraging each other.

Elmer H. Orth

Elmer H. Orth, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 7, 2022 at the CentraCare Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 15 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Interment will be in the parish

cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Elmer Orth was born on June 28, 1931 at the farm place of his parents Mary (Bromenshenkel) and Lambert Orth. He attended country school and after his graduation, worked on the family farm with his father. He married Delores Weber on August 23, 1955. They had been married 66 loving years before his passing.

Elmer purchased Bromen's Dairy after working for Alex Bromen ten years. He operated Orth's Quality Dairy with his brother, Richard.

He retired at the age of 62 and sold the Dairy to his son, Mark.

Elmer was a man of great faith. He volunteered as an usher and auditor of weekly collections at St. Paul's Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd & 4th Degree, Chamber of Commerce, and was Fraternal Secretary for Catholic Aid Association for over 25 years. Elmer loved being with people, playing cards, traveling and most of all being with his family. Elmer was known for his zest for life and infectious smile.

Survivors include his wife, Delores of Sauk Centre; four children, Karen (Gayle) O'Leary of West Fargo, ND, Carol (Sid) Bjelland of Bemidji, MN, Mark (Cheryl Saari) of Moundsview, MN, and Lori of Circle Pines, MN; grandchildren, Brian, Brandon (Jess), Shannon, Megan, Nicole (Josh), and Heather; great grandchildren, Brynn, Beckett, and Teagan; brothers, Eymard and Richard Orth; sisters, Millie Morgel and Marion Cameron; and sisters-in-law, Edna Orth, Maryann Orth, and Lucille Orth.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Walter, Leonard, Donald, and Philip Orth; sister, Dorothy Orth; brothers-in-law, Tom Cameron and Steve Morgel; sisters-in-law, Lucille, Jenny, and Dorothy Orth.

Dorothy T. Ahrens

Dorothy T. Ahrens, age 97 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 7, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

D o r o t h y Theresa Ahrens was born April 17, 1924 to Fred and Rose (Bromenshenkel) Botz. Dorothy worked in Cleveland, Ohio and was truly a Rosie the Riveter, working on Boeing airplanes. Dorothy married Ferdinand J. Ahrens on June 18, 1951 and farmed on the family farm the rest of their lives.

Dorothy was a Christian Mother at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. She loved gardening, playing cards, reading, canning, and fishing on their lake. Dorothy enjoyed talking about growing up in the Great Depression and watching the Minnesota Vikings.

She is survived by her nine children, Kent, Mary, Tim, Tony, Don, Joe, Julie, Mark, and Jeff; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Muriel; and nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Ferdinand on January 29, 2002; parents; son, Tom; and many brothers and sisters.

Naomi I. Kapphahn, age 95 of Burtrum, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at her daughter’s home in Blaine, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, January 12 at Faith Community Church in Burtrum with Pastor Terry Wardlaw officiating. Interment was at Moses Dane

Cemetery in Burtrum.

Naomi Ione Potts was born April 16, 1926, in Rapid City, South Dakota to William and Mary (Wilson) Potts. She was united in marriage to LeRoy Kapphahn on June 21, 1946 in Burtrum.

She was employed at the Burtrum Post Office for many years and later became Postmaster in Burtrum.

Naomi was a member of the Faith Community Church and earlier of Burtrum Free Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in many other areas, including song leader, sang in a quartet, worked with the youth group, Bible School, and the Women’s Missionary Society. She was active in the community helping with the Memorial Day activities, helped to prepare and serve the Burtrum Annual Bean Bake, and raised funds for Moses Dane Cemetery in which she was secretary/treasurer. Naomi was always caring and giving and a wonderful example, she will be truly missed.

Survivors include her children, Gloria Hobbs (Jim) of Burtrum, Janice Gessell (Pat) of Blaine, and Kyle Kapphahn (Bob) of Lenexa, Kansas; grandchildren, Donald (Jenna) Hobbs, Jeanne (Perry) Lee, April (Shawn) Stancer, Jackie (Eric) Sullivan, Brad Gessel, and Alyssa (Craig) Towle; and great-grandchildren, Haley and Garrett Gessell, Brianna Towle, Lexis, Landon, Avery, and Amera Stancer, Madison Lee, Anika and Adora Sullivan, and Elliot Hobbs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Kapphahn on August 9, 2006; parents; great-granddaughter, Riley Madison Stancer; sisters, Donna Schmidt, Wilma Scalf, and Inez Pullins; and brothers, Harry, Robert, and John Potts.

Susan K. “Sue” Va n H a v e r m a e t , age 64 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 7, 2022 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Susan Kay VanHavermaet was born July 29, 1957 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Raymond and Betty (Beilke) VanHavermaet. Sue graduated from Sauk Centre High School and worked many years at Punkins and Monkeys Preschool.

She volunteered her time helping in the kitchen at Holy Family School. Sue was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

She enjoyed crafting, making cards for people, feeding the birds and caring for her flowers, and enjoyed taking part in the activities at Riverview Manor. Sue loved spending time with her family and the residents at Riverview Manor, whom she considered her family.

Survivors include her mother, Betty VanHavermaet of Sauk Centre; brothers, Jerry (Bev) VanHavermaet of Sauk Centre, Roger (Brenda) VanHavermaet of Sauk Centre, and Bill VanHavermaet of Sauk Centre; sister, Karen (Dan) Weber of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Donna M. Kuhlmann

Donna M. Kuhlmann, age 66 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 18 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment will be held at the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Parish Prayers will be at 4 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Donna Mae Maciej was born on July 14, 1955 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Lawrence and Lucille Maciej. She graduated from Swanville High School and later married George Kuhlmann on September 28, 1974. Together they raised three children on a farm located outside of Grey Eagle and later divorced in 2006. She then met her significant other, Mark Wenker, in 2007 and together they enjoyed adventuring and enjoying each other’s company.

Donna was a member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, playing cards, bike riding, watching musicals, and being a positive influence on her community. Donna was a loving mother, grandma, partner, sister, and a true friend to everyone that knew her and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her children, Jill (Chris) Skaja of Rice, Josh (Amanda) Kuhlmann of Freeport, and Jordan (Brittany) Kuhlmann of Grey Eagle; grandchildren, Amber, Ava, and Reagan; siblings, DiAnn (James) Loven of Swanville, and Larry (Donna) Maciej of Swanville; and significant other, Mark Wenker of Sauk Centre.

Virgil N. Hoppe

Virgil N. Hoppe, age 89 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Centre in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, January 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Virgil Norbert Hoppe was born March 29, 1932 in New Munich, Minnesota to Zeno and Veronica (Paul) Hoppe. After graduating high school, he worked in St. Paul for 3 months before entering into the military on January 2, 1950, during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged after 20 years of service serving our country. Virgil was married to Elizabeth for 18 years and together they raised a family of four in St. Paul, Minnesota. After the divorce, he met his life partner, Maria Seelig and got married on September 2, 1989 and moved up to Melrose in 1999.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Virgil enjoyed playing cards, gardening, canning, wood working, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children, Janet (Allen) Conway of Apple Valley, Theresa (Robert) Casey of Forest Lake, Cindy (Otto) Schulze of St. Paul, and Mark (Shelly) of St. Paul; siblings, Joe Hoppe of Freeport, Norman Hoppe of Freeport, Harold Hoppe of Freeport, and Janet (Richard) Hoeschen of Minneapolis; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Hoppe on November 17, 2020; parents; siblings, Louise Simmer, Rose Marie Och, and James Hoppe.

Eugene J. Jennissen

Eugene J. “Gene” Jennissen, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, January 11 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Anthony of Padua Cemetery in Padua at a later date.

Eugene Joseph Jennissen was born July 17, 1931 at home near Padua, Minnesota, the third of 14 children. The first boy, which became his name until another boy came along. He attended District 53 country school south of Sauk Centre through the 8th grade and 9th grade at St. John’s Prep School.

He met Claudette Josephine Gallus in 1951 who was a good friend of his sister, Margie. They married on June 16, 1953 and began their 45-year career as dairy farmers. They raised ten children which he called the best part of his life. Attending the state Holstein Convention, district and 4-H Dairy Shows with his family were events he was passionate about. Playing 500 and Solo card games were his favorites until the end. Gene retired from farming in 1997 and moved to Pleasant Street in Sauk Centre and took a job picking up milk samples for Stearns County DHIA. He also enjoyed working in his backyard shop doing woodworking projects.

He was an usher at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Gene volunteered with Meals on Wheels for several years and was a member of the Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight for two and a half years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Claudette Jennissen of Sauk Centre; children, Kathy (Brent) Sjodin, Mary Jo Pouliot, Jerry (Linda) Jennissen, Randy (Gail) Jennissen, Louy (Dave) Theeuwen, Tom (Karen) Jennissen, Dan (Mary) Jennissen, Dwayne (Michelle) Jennissen, and Matt (Yolanda) Jennissen; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren with one on the way; siblings, Marie Bagan, Sister Anita Jennissen, Margie Schmiesing, Rosie (Jim) Miller, Tony (Marlene) Jennissen, Jim (Bernie) Jennissen, Joann (Florian) Ledermann, Dave (Barb) Jennissen, and Harold (Jean) Jennissen; and in-laws, Doris Jennissen, Joan Wynne, Cathy Gallus, Marcy Gallus, Bob (Bonnie) Gallus, Darlene Gallus, Ron (Judy) Gallus, Mary Emerick, and Larry (Darlene) Gallus.

James F. Molkenthin

James F. Molkenthin, 80, of Burtrum passed away of natural causes on December 18, 2021 in Melrose, MN. Jim, the son of a preacher man, was born in Abilene, Texas on October 28, 1941. The family moved around, following Pastor Fred Molkentin's church assignments. These include Aitkin, MN, Horton and Sioux Center, Iowa, and Minneapolis.

Jim graduated from Minneapolis West High School, attended Northwestern Bible College, and graduated from St. Cloud State University, earning a teaching degree. He owned and operated the Snapdragon Greenhouse in Burtrum. Jim initiated a local newspaper, The Burtrum News, for many years. He also enjoyed the connections he made through his ham radio hobby.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Adeline (Golden) Molkenthin and his grandparents.

He is survived by his brothers, Gerald C. (Georgia) Molkenthin, and Steven P. (Carol) Molkenthin, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Finally, Jim would want everyone to know, in the words of Lennon and McCartney, "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."

Jane L. Meyer

Jane L. Meyer, age 87 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 10 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rick Aubol officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Jane Lucille Bromenshenkel was born October 14, 1934 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Albert and Elizabeth (Meyer) Bromenshenkel. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1952. She was united in marriage to Cyril Meyer on August 20, 1957 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Jane worked at First State Bank in Sauk Centre until she decided to devote her time and energy to managing the household and raising their four children.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre where she sang in the church choir for over 25 years and was president for many years of the Christian Mothers. Jane was devoted to her faith through praying chaplets for each of her grandchildren, attending Chapel, praying at least three rosary’s a day and developed a strong relationship with the Sisters at the Poor Clares Monastery in Sauk Rapids. Her spirit of Christmas was infectious and will always be remembered by her family. Jane was known for her banana bread.

She won second place at the Stearns County Fair and would keep track of the number of loaves she baked; her record was over 500 in a single year. Jane was an avid bowler, she taught herself to play the accordion and became accomplished enough to be invited to play on KASM radio, she enjoyed dancing, playing cards, making jewelry trees, beating her grandchildren at a game of aggravation and loved attending their sporting events, school activities and church functions. Her favorite past time was spending time with her husband, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, extended family and dear friends.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Cyril Meyer of Sauk Centre; children, Patty (Michael) Lucore of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Ken (Patty) Meyer of Bloomington, Tom (Jan) Meyer of Sauk Centre, and Jeannie (Michael) Pittenger of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Tim (Ellie), Katie (Brian), Bryan (Rachael), Andrew (Andrea), Nic, Mathew (Sarah), Zac, Dustin (Trista), Ethan, Tonje (Jorgen), Kasey (Seamus), Ryan, Meghan, Brady, Michaela; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Evelyn (Allen) Siegle of Long Prairie and Lillian “Tootie” Lucas of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert, Allan, Leonard, and Victor Bromenshenkel; and sisters, Dorothy Bromenshenkel, Rita Bromenshenkel, Esther Winters, Verena Steffes, Mary Gritzmacher Langer, and Irene Trisko; and infant brother, Lawrence Bromenshenkel.

Brian Alnes

Brian Jon Alnes, loving husband and father to four sons, passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. He was 53 and was serving as the Executive Director of Lake Beauty Bible Camp in Long Prairie, MN. Brian was born on March 25, 1968 in Edina, MN to Allan and Sandra (Anderson) Alnes.

He graduated from Minnehaha Academy and then attended Normandale Community College and North Central Bible College before going on to complete seminary classes through Bethel University and North Park Theological Seminary, becoming a Consecrated Staff Minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church.

On October 6, 1990, Brian married Rhonda Kay Wolf. Together they raised four sons: Peter, Caleb, Nathan, and Joshua. Brian had a love for hunting, whether it was deer, pheasant, or duck, and he enjoyed fishing and four-wheel riding with his sons and especially his grandson, Maximus. He liked to fix things by giving of his time, talents, abilities, and efforts, but his favorite way to spend time was being with his wife, sons, and grandsons.

Brian wore many hats in his life beginning with his first job at the age of twelve working for his Uncle Rog at Pannekoeken Huis Restaurant in Edina, MN. He served as an EMS/Firefighter for the Crystal Fire and Rescue Squad in Crystal, MN where he and Pastor Greg Bodin started the CISM Program. He was a DNR instructor, a First Responder in Swanville, MN, and a chaplain for Morrison and Todd Counties. For over thirty-five years, he and his best friend from high school, Matt Griepp, co-owned Star Seal of MN, a paving and asphalt company, and Brian also worked alongside his best friend, Stan Holter, as a driver at Richfield Bus Company. He served on many boards and committees, but his true passion was being a pastor.

Brian was known as the "Pastor of Discomfort" because he was always helping others to "get out of their comfort zone" so they could meet Christ personally and grow in relationship with Him as they pursued God's will for their lives. He loved God, family, and others, and in doing so he touched countless lives for Christ in his more than thirty-one years of ministry, the last fifteen of which have been at Lake Beauty Bible Camp.

Brian was larger than life. He had an unmistakable loud voice, an infectious laugh, and a mischievous smile. He was the kindest, most compassionate, caring, and loving husband, father, and papa. His work ethic was as big as his personality, but his heart was even bigger.

He cared about, helped, and loved all who encountered him. Brian lived life to the fullest by serving God. He knew that each day was a gift, and for many years he concluded his voicemail greeting with the wonderful invitation to, "Have a great day and remember who gave it to you!"

Brian was preceded in death by his sister, Missy and his grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Rhonda; his four sons: Peter (Kayla), Caleb (Olivia), Nathan (fiancée Olivia), and Joshua; two grandsons, Maximus and Malachi; his parents, Allan and Sandra; his sister Marcy (Jeff) Peterson (children Hunter, Ashley, Ellie, and Charlie); in-laws Melvin and Judy Wolf; sister-in-law Rebecca (John) Carpentier (son Zachary); many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his beloved hunting partner, Tank, his dog.

A memorial service for Brian Alnes will be held on Saturday, January 22, at The Buffalo Covenant Church (1601 Hwy 25 N., Buffalo, MN 55313). Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. and the service will begin at 10:00 a.m. The family would invite you to bring your written memories/ stories of Brian to be placed in a box at the church. 100th Birthday

Alfred Schaefer

Alfred Schaefer of New Munich will celebrate 100 years young on January 14, 2022.

Alfred has seen many changes in his 100 years: prohibition existed, radio broadcasting was born, the automotive industry took off, experienced the Great Depression, he survived the Armistice Day blizzard, and so much more.

He often shares his stories with his family, which is treasured by us all.

Alfred married the love of his life, Lorraine Wiechmann, on May 29, 1945. They celebrated 73 years of marriage. Together they raised seven children.

There will be a private celebration with his family.

Swanville High School AAA Award Nominees Seniors Mackenzie Morris and Shane Lambrecht have been selected as this year’s Swanville High School Triple ‘A’ nominees.

The Triple ‘A’ award recognizes top high school seniors who have excelled in Academics, Arts and Athletics. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one female and one male for the Triple ‘A’ Award.

Mackenzie Morris, daughter of Kim and John Lindemann and Justin Morris, has participated in theater during her time in high school. She has also participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Shane Lambrecht, son of Julie and Mike, has participated in theater in high school. He has also participated in football, basketball and baseball.

Shane is very involved with youth sports in the community where he helps coach a variety of age levels and also volunteers a lot of time helping out SAB with their numerous projects. Shane is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll and has taken some college level classes as well. His future plans are to attend Bemidji State University and major in Sports Management and minor in coaching.

How Your High Schooler Can Save for College Even During the School Year!

Honestly, you’re already crushing it as a parent, especially if you still have your sanity! Before you celebrate too hard, though, there’s one more thing to think about—college.

If you’re like most parents, the idea of paying for your kids’ college gives you nightmares. Let’s be real, we’re in the middle of a pretty scary student loan crisis right now. But the truth is, it’s not your job to fund your child’s degree. You’re there to help them out along the way, but they have skin in the game, too.

With that in mind, here are five things they can do while they’re still in high school to help them save up and go to college without student loans (yep, it is possible). These steps shouldn’t just happen during summer vacation, either. They can do this stuff all through the school year.

Avoid debt—no matter what Teach your high schooler that debt should never be an option—for anything!

Encourage them to stay away from car payments (they can find a used car in their price range), teach them to use cash or a debit card instead of credit cards, and most importantly, forget about taking out loans to pay for college! Bonus tip: If their school offers a personal finance class, tell them to sign up!

Have a savings account Any extra money they have, after budgeting for monthly expenses like gas, clothes, and maybe some fun every once in a while, should go straight into savings!

Work a part-time job If their schedule allows, working 20 hours per week can actually be healthy for high schoolers. Not only does it help them stack up cash for college, it preps them for the college or technical school search process by teaching them leadership and responsibility—plus, resume-building and interview skills. Colleges look at that stuff when they’re considering students for merit-based scholarships.

Weigh all the options Your high schooler might be worried about getting into their dream school, but here’s some real talk: Their only “dream school” should be the one they can go to debt-free. This might mean going to a public, in-state school instead of a private university, starting at community college and transferring later, or even checking out a two-year trade school. Make sure you guys talk through all the options together, so they know you have their backs when it comes to making smart choices.

Start applying for scholarships It’s never too early to start applying for scholarships and grants, and they really can make a difference in being able to pay for school. Encourage your teen to apply for as many as possible during the school year. I always tell kids to spend at least one hour per day applying for scholarships. Seriously, they could earn thousands of dollars in just part of the time they normally spend scrolling through Instagram!

And if you have a high school senior, help them fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to stay up to date on any financial aid award letters they receive to make sure they’re not being offered a loan—it can happen!

Dear Motor Medics, I want to repair the rear defroster on my Chrysler Town and Country van. We haul a lot of stuff in the van for our small business and over the years items have scratched the defroster grid on the glass and I assume that is why it does not work. The button on the dash still lights up. What do I need to do to fix the grid? Some spots are scratched up to an inch or so.

- Kelly in Butte, Montana Dear Kelly, If you have any spots in the defroster grid that are cut you will have an open circuit and that will stop the operation of the defroster.

The grid needs to be protected from objects that may scratch it or from things like ordinary tape. We have seen many temporary license plates taped to the window and when removed the grid gets torn. One way to protect a working grid is with window tint if it is legal in your area. Repairing a broken grid can be tricky. There is a liquid product available at some parts stores that will bridge the gap of a cut wire, but it is not meant for long gaps such as you described. If you have several cuts with some being extensive you may opt to replace the glass with a good used part. A used replacement rear glass is a much cheaper alternative to get your defroster back up and running.

- Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I just purchased a 2008 Infinity sedan and would like to have a second set of wheels and more aggressive tires for winter. The vehicle also has a tiny spare that is much smaller than the other tires. I want to know if I can get another set of wheels for the car and where I would do that. I also want to know if I must stick with the smaller spare or if I can swap it out with a full-size tire.

-Jeff in Jackson Hole, Wyoming Dear Jeff, The Infinity is a nice car, and most of them have some very expensive factory wheels. We have several customers of our shop that use a different set of wheels with special tires for the winter season. Most of them chose to go with a set of used replacement wheels that matched what they already had but in some cases such

as the more expensive wheels found on higher end cars like the Infinity, they purchased a new set of custom wheels for the drier months and used the factory wheels for the rest of the year.

Your local tire shop should be able to help you with options. A full-size spare may be an option too but remember the storage space for the spare is often only large enough to store the compact spare so you may have to keep it in the trunk sliding around and taking up valuable room.

Grey Eagle Township • January 3, 2022 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe and Erv Herdering. Ron Warner and Daryl Bacon were also present.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Mike made the motion to accept the agenda. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: Ray made the motion to accept the December 6, 2021 minutes.

Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Daryl Bacon and Ron Warner were in attendance to discuss moving a house along Arden Drive. They have permission to cut some trees along the roadway that would be a problem for the movers. Trees to be cut will be flagged prior to cutting. Any damage to Township roads will be repaired by the owner or mover. Ron will be notified when a date is set for the actual move. Ray made the motion to approve the move. Mike made the second, All in favor, Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for December. Claims list included claims 3640-3648 for a total of $15,142.26.

Ray presented a claim from Klemish Tree Service from this summer. Mike made the motion to pay the claims including the one for Klemish Tree Service. Ron made the second. All in favor. Motion carried. Mail included a letter from surplus services, the league of cities and an email about a clerk/treas training. The contract with Elmdale Township will be reviewed and sent to Elmdale Township for another 10 years at $400.00 per year. The reorganization list was discussed all items remained the same except for a raise in hourly pay for supervisors to $28.00 and the clerk at $30.00. Mileage was increased to the IRS rate of 58.5 cents. Mike made a motion to approve the reorganization items, Ray made the second. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray stated not much to report, brushing was finished, and the posts on 311th have been removed. Ray and Ron signed the weed report for the County.

Additional agenda item: Board members received copies of the Grey Eagle Township Comprehensive Plan to review and will be discussed at the February meeting. The annual audit meeting is scheduled for February 14, 2022 at 8:00 pm.

Public Comment: Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:55 pm.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor, and Tony Maciej. Also present: Angie & Brent VanRisseghem, AJ Johnson, and reporter Sheila Bergren.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Wednesday, November 3, 2021 was reviewed. A motion was made by John Dragseth to approve the minutes. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Angie VanRisseghem from Swanville Insurance was present to go over the City’s insurance renewal through the League of MN Cities. Angie handed out cost coverages of the city buildings. She also explained the liability coverage-waiver form, which council was in agreement to not waive the monetary limits on

municipal tort liability. Mayor Lange signed the form.

AJ and Jenifer Johnson would like Lots 2 & 3, Block 1 in the North Berkey 1st Addition.

They realize that lot 2 is stated as a drainage lot. An easement for the city would need to be wrote up on this lot and a garage is planned to be put on it. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the application from Johnson’s to purchase lots 2 & 3, block 1 with lot 2 having to build a stick garage, not pole, to match the home and an easement for the city drainage. John Dragseth seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The test drill wells have been completed and have not received the results yet. The city engineer also informed council the city’s old water tower will need a historic study completed.

The City of Swanville is in the process of conducting an Energy and Environmental survey. With the survey the city will find out what kind of projects residents want the city to focus on. After completing the survey a led light bulb will be received, while supply lasts.

The final levy certification for 2022 was discussed. After discussion, Norm Carlson Made a motion to raise the final levy $10,000.00. John Dragseth seconded the motion. all members voted in favor, motion carried.

Resolution #21-1207 was presented to council, to accept $1000.00 from the Swanville VFW Post 6037 for the Swanville City Park. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept Resolution #21-1207 from the Swanville VFW post 6037 for their generous donation. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

An annual designation of polling place must be in place every year. Resolution #211207B was presented to council. Tony Maciej made a motion to accept Resolution #211207B stating the City of Swanville declares the official polling place for the City of Swanville in 2022 is the Morrison Co Auditors/ Treasures office of Little Falls and Todd Co Auditors/Treasures office in Long Prairie. The City of Swanville conducts mail-in ballets.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the Swanville Center.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by John Dragseth to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:00 pm.

Stearns Electric’s Operation Round Up® Program contributed $71,952 to 62 area organizations in November. Through the Operation Round Up® program, Stearns Electric Association gives its member-consumers the opportunity to give back to the community by rounding up their electric bill to the nearest dollar.

Since the program’s inception in 1993, Operation Round Up (ORU) and Stearns Electric members have awarded over $2.7 million to 5,071 local non-profit organizations and community service programs. The rounded-up funds, no more than $11.88 per year, per member, are placed in a trust fund that is administered by the Stearns Electric Association Trust Board.

Trust Board Directors met in November to review applications and funding requests. Sixty-two organizations were selected to receive funds totaling between $200 to $2,000 in this round of contributions.

Fire: January 4, 2022: At approximately 5:40 a.m. received a call reportng a barn fire at 29191 Wedgewood Rd. in Millwood Township. Flames could be seen coming from the front of the barn in the hay storage area. The caller also said that the barn was 60 feet from other buildings and that there were 48 cows inside. Deputy Adam Johnson responded to the scene along with the Freeport Fire Department and Melrose Fire Department. Melrose Ambulance service was also sent to stand by in case medical care was needed. Deputy Johnson arrived on scene approximately 8 minutes after the call. He reported that a large portion of the barn was engulfed. The owner of the property, Glenn Heinen, 56, of Melrose, also reported that the 48 head of cattle were still inside the barn.

Sadly, the conditions were such that the barn could not safely be approached, or thecattle removed. Freeport Fire and Melrose Fire arrived on scene a few minutes later and began to fight it. Additional water resources were eventually requested from the Grey Eagle and Albany Fire Departments.

The amount of water needed can cause other issues as well. The Stearns County Highway Department was also contacted and responded to the area to sand and salt the road.

The barn suffered extensive damage and the 48 head of cattle were lost.

Nominees must be a junior in high school, make satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in an MSHSL fine arts or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in their school and volunteer in their community.

Lauren Miller, daughter of Renee and Jeff, has participated in volleyball, basketball, softball and trap. She also has participated in band, choir and the fall play. Lauren is on the Student Council, is junior class president and has been a part of the homecoming committee. Lauren is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll as well. She spends time volunteering at elementary basketball practices, vacation bible school and helping with the many projects that the Swanville Athletic Booster Club works on.

Lucas Miller, son of Renee and Jeff, has participated in football, basketball, baseball, trap shooting and the fall play. Lucas is on the Student Council, class representative and has been a part of the homecoming committee. He is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll at Swanville. Lucas spends time volunteering at elementary basketball practices, vacation bible school and helping with the many projects that the Swanville Athletic Booster Club works on.

An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select the state ExCEL Award recipient in January. ExCEL winners will be recognized on KSTCTV (Channel 45) during the upcoming winter state tournaments.
