You can’t put a price on a good reputation -By Harvey Mackay Two brothers in a small town had a reputation for bad behavior.

But they were rich enough to avoid the consequences all the time. The pastor of the local church knew them well and tried to find the good in both of them, although this was next to impossible.

One day one of the brothers died suddenly. The other came to the church and asked the pastor to speak at his funeral.

“To be honest, I wouldn’t know what to say,” the pastor replied.

The brother took out his checkbook.

talking about. All you have to do is tell everyone at the funeral that my brother was a saint.”

The pastor thought for a moment, then accepted the check.

At the funeral, the pastor stood before the townspeople who had come to see the last of one of their disliked neighbors. “I didn’t know this man well,” he said. “I do know that he cheated on his wife, and cheated everyone he did business with. But I can say one thing about him: compared to his brother, he was a saint.”

My father, Jack Mackay, used to tell me, “You can’t buy a good reputation; you must earn it.” He also offered this advice, “You spend your whole lifetime building a good name and reputation, and one foolish act can destroy it.”

I took his words to heart, and aside from building long-term relationships, there is nothing more important than a good reputation in building a successful business. Without a positive reputation, success is elusive.

Richard Branson, who founded the Virgin Group that controls more than 400 companies, told me in an interview, “All you have in business is your reputation – so it’s very important that you keep your word.”

There are many people who were at the top of their game when they made

one fatal mistake – due to poor judgment, arrogance or the inability to do the right thing. Reputations are destroyed, and all the money in the world can’t buy them back.

As Warren Buffett said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”

How true! You can do things right 99 out of 100 times; however, mess up one time, and the consequences can be severe.

Reputation doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time. But if you do the right thing consistently, you will build a great reputation. Reputation is never completely secured – it is being continually earned.

Elizabeth Arden, the founder of the cosmetics, skin care and fragrance company, said, “Repetition makes reputation, and reputation makes customers.”

Building a great reputation is like building a company; you need to do it one brick at a time. While you cannot build reputation on what you are going to do, you do build expectations with your customers. And if you don’t meet those expectations, you can’t expect your customers to trust you. Your reputation is always on the line.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The First When our area was first settled, it involved several types of immigrants.

The first type included people from the Eastern part of our country, who were born in or immigrated to this country in earlier years.

Many of these individuals were single males, who were wanting to take quantities of game and forestry and mining products to “get rich quick.” Some of this group also included individuals who had wealth and wanted to invest it in the cheep land in the area.

Another group came directly from Europe, having heard about the vast quantities of rich farm land in the Minnesota Territory, looking for more permanent farming locations. These individuals had been working on their father’s farm in Europe and in some cases, found that they were not the oldest son and that their older brother would inherit their father’s farm. That left them with two choices, should I pay a high price for European land or would it be better to go to the Minnesota Territory, where the land was fertile and in some cases free. They may have recently been married and needed to begin to create a future for their families. Many came here and settled near others who spoke the same language.

What they found depended on the time of their move to Minnesota. Those coming to this territory before 1880, probably came here by riverboat to St.

Anthony and then traveled cross country by wagon and team from there. After 1880, the railroad systems were being established and the wagon and team transportation ride was shortened from 100 miles to maybe as little as 20 miles.

Remembering, of course, this wasn’t on freeways, state highways, county or township roads, this travel was on trails through hills, swamps, rivers and forests, which were definitely unimproved. One must also remember that if the settlers needed to go to town for any reason, they had to take this same trail in reverse.

It’s obvious, they just didn’t do a large amount of unneeded travel.

When an old church closed in our area, my cousin took the church record book to the new church and while it was in his possession, he read some of the entries from the 1850’s. The entries included record of births, baptisms, marriages and funerals as entered by the circuit preacher, who traveled to the “wilderness of Todd County” about every three months. The book also included as cause of death for many of the deceased as being suicide. These were tough times.

Not only was the wilderness dangerous for the guys clearing the trees, but the danger also extended to the kids.

One occurrence by Pillsbury involved a 7 year old girl who went to get the cows in spring and got lost for the entire summer and was found dead in the fall.

Another case of lost kids involved a boy and girl from Elmdale, who also were lost getting the cows. They were found dead a month later. There are two stones as burial markers for these kids in a yard, which was previously part of their family’s home property.

Rolex was recognized for its strong reputation with consumers across all seven performance areas, especially quality of products/services. Lego ranked second for best reputation with consumers. The Walt Disney Company was third, followed by Canon, Google, Bosch, Sony, Intel, Rolls-Royce and Adidas.

things done. They take ownership of their mistakes. They are generous. They listen to other points of view. They’re decisive. They don’t sacrifice principles, and they’re resilient.

That list is a perfect guideline for those who aren’t sure what they need to do. Pay particular attention to the final habit: resilience. You will make mistakes, you will upset some people, and you will be blamed for things that aren’t your fault. But your reputation will take a beating if you react rashly.

Take the high road, not the shortcut.

That’s the brilliance of resilience.

MnDOT launches truck parking technology to help drivers find safe parking spaces Minnesota is one of eight states participating in the country’s first multistate truck parking information management system that launched recently to help truck drivers find safe and legal parking. The Minnesota Department of Transportation installed the technology at six rest areas in the state. A seventh rest area will go online next spring.

The technology collects and broadcasts real-time information to dynamic message signs along the Interstate 35 and I-94 freight corridors to alert truck drivers about the number of available parking spaces ahead. Truckers and dispatchers can also access the information on the 511 traveler information system and smart phone applications. The 511 system will include a text and email notification feature that will be available in mid-January.

“This technology makes the regional freight corridor system safer and more efficient,” said Dan Rowe, state project manager. “Drivers can plan their routes better and make safer, smarter parking decisions.”

Truckers often spend an hour or more looking for safe parking. They end up parking in illegal and unsafe places such as ramps and shoulders.

“Hours of service limits force truckers to park in areas other than the rest areas, which fill up quickly,” said Rowe.

Other benefits of the system include more efficient movement of goods, reduced fuel consumption and emissions, and less non-routine maintenance repairs on highway shoulders and ramps.

The technology is available at the Lake Lakota, Big Spunk Lake, Enfield, Forest Lake and Elm Creek rest areas along the I-94 corridor and the Heath Creek rest area on the I-35 corridor. The St. Croix rest area on I-94 will be operational in the spring.

The system was funded with a $25 million federal TIGER grant in 2015. Minnesota received $1.2 million from the grant and contributed another $177,500. Other states in the region include Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Moving their shelter was a fairly easy task and they were comfortable in many locations in the woods. They primarily followed the food opportunities from one place to another. Their one concern when moving their homes was to put the dwelling close to an abundance of clean water. Obituaries George Funk

G e o r g e Funk, age 92 died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

George Funk was born September 2, 1926 in New Munich, Minnesota to John and Elizabeth (Bloch) Funk.

On July 16, 1955, George was united in marriage to Rose Cecelia Lauer at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley, Minnesota. George took over the Funk family farm and farmed until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and the New Munich Lions Club. George served

as lector and Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Faith, family, and farming were so important to him. George enjoyed fishing, bowling and playing cards.

George will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Rose; children, David (Carol) Funk of St. Cloud, Bernadette Forster of Albany, James (Catharine) Funk of Cross Lake, Diane (Tim) Vadnais of Clearwater, Kevin (Pam) Funk of St. Joseph, Karen (Alan) Schuch of Marshall, and Jane (Gerald) Noble of West Fargo, North Dakota; 22 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Beatrice Funk of Melrose.

George was preceded in death by infant children, John Funk and Ruth Funk; parents; brothers, Anton Funk, Henry Funk, Edward Funk and Norbert Funk; and sisters, Anna Funk, Sister Clement Funk OSB, and Barbara Wenker.

Dear Dave, How do you feel about timeshares, and the free trips and dinners they offer as part of their sales pitches?

Is it possible to win with these things?

-Dan Dear Dan, In my opinion, timeshares are a complete waste of time and money. Lots of folks go into this kind of thing believing they’ll play the game and win. They think they’ll get a vacation weekend and other free stuff, then just say “no” when the time comes.

The problem is, most people aren’t as tough a sell as they think. Besides, do you really want to waste a weekend of your life letting some pushy salesperson twist your arm? That’s not my idea of fun.

As a whole, timeshares have an incredibly high dissatisfaction rate. It’s almost impossible to find anyone who’s happy they bought into one, and there are good reasons for this. Why would you pay thousands of your hard-earned dollars for a tiny place you may or may not get a chance to visit once a year?

Add to this the fact that you have no equity in the place, and you’re stuck paying ongoing maintenance fees.

My advice? Don’t take a chance playing the game, Dan. There are much better uses for your time and money!

-Dave Dear Dave, I’ve been late on a credit card bill several times, and it was turned over to a collection agency. They have offered a couple of different payment options. If I agree to one of these, does that mean the original creditor gets paid, too?

-Carter Dear Carter, A collection agency either owns the debt outright, or they’re directly representing the credit card company in these kinds of situations. It’s not unusual for things to be handled this way when someone has defaulted on a loan.

Unless you have the cash to make good on the debt outright, I’d go ahead and accept whichever deal makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. You’ve already got a mark against you on your credit report for having this turned over to collections, so an indication of settlement on a credit card you defaulted on is really no big deal.

Here’s Your Permission Slip to Become a Millionaire

Can I be honest? I’m tired of hearing people make millionaires out to be big, bad wolves.

That all wealthy people are evil, greedy, self-centered people who inherited or stole money to get rich. It’s as if there were something wrong with

being wealthy.

Listen, people: money is neutral— what matters is how you get it and how you spend it. And most of the wealthy people I know didn’t swindle anybody.

They worked hard. They saved. They sacrificed. And now they get to enjoy the results of that patience and perseverance.

I get it—not everybody wants to travel the world. Their lifestyle and wants are simple and uncomplicated.

But for a lot of Americans, becoming wealthy isn’t just a lofty dream—it’s a necessity. Here are four reasons why it’s okay—and important—to become a millionaire: 1. THE LENGTH OF RETIREMENT Back in 1960, people retired around age 65 and had a life expectancy of 80, so they only had to fund their retirement for about fifteen years. But now, according to a recent Gallup poll, current retirees said goodbye to the workforce at age 61 and current workers expect to retire at age 66. But people are living longer now. The current life expectancy for Americans is 84 years for men and 86 years for women, and one in four people will live past age 90. That means you’ll need enough money to live on for at least 20 to 25 years.

2. THE COST OF HEALTHCARE According to a recent Fidelity study, a 65-year-old couple retiring in 2018 would need $280,000 to cover their medical expenses during their retirement years. Now, that amount doesn’t

include long-term care, like living in a nursing home or home health care. That could cost an additional $138,000 per person.

I know you’re thinking that you’re healthy and you won’t have extensive medical needs. Sorry, but the government has estimated that someone who’s 65 years old today has almost a 70 percent chance of needing long-term care at some point.

Let me be crystal clear: Health care in retirement is expensive! That’s another reason you may need to hit the million-dollar mark.

3. YOU CAN’T COUNT ON SOCIAL SECURITY I can’t count how many times I’ve heard people say they’ll just live on Social Security when the time comes.

That’s a very bad idea. In 2018, the maximum monthly benefit a person can receive at full retirement age is $2,788.

But the average payment in August 2018 was just $1,415, which comes to just under $17,000 annually. That’s only about $5,000 above the poverty line of $12,140.

If that’s not reason enough to kick your wealth building into high gear, listen to this: You may not get the full amount you expect by the time you retire. Even as we speak, Social Security payouts are higher than its income. If things don’t change, its reserves will go dry in 2034. To make sure it doesn’t, lawmakers want to decrease the amount people get in monthly payments. Nothing has been settled yet, but it’s on the backburner.

4. YOU WANT TO LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY This final reason to build wealth isn’t about facts and figures. It’s about your family. Most people I talk to want to leave a strong financial legacy for the people they love. Nobody wants to see their kids or grandkids struggle. Knowing that your family will be taken care of long after you’re gone gives you peace of mind. Having that safety net in place lets you sleep easier at night.

You need to invest 15 percent of your gross income every month. Since you’ve already got an emergency fund in place, and you’ve paid off your debt (except the house), hitting that mark is absolutely do-able. You may have to sacrifice some things—like that fancy vacation or designer wardrobe—but you can invest that much. I’ve talked to enough teachers, custodians and blue-collar workers to know it’s possible.

How can you make sure you’re putting away money every, single, month?

Automatic withdrawals. Whether you’re investing through work or through a brokerage firm, you can arrange to have a portion of your paycheck (either a fixed amount or a percentage) go into your investment account. That way, you aren’t tempted to use that money for living room furniture or the newest tech toy.

MUTUAL FUNDS You may get tired of hearing this because it’s not flashy or trending, but the best way to grow your money is to invest it in mutual funds. Yep. No getrich-quick schemes, and no pyramid marketing ploys peddling skincare or kitchen items. Just simple mutual funds.

Swanville High School is pleased to announce its December Athletes of the Month: Avery Jackson for Girls’ Basketball and Austin Lemke for Boys’ Basketball.

Coaches’ Comments: “Avery Jackson is our choice for the December Girls’ Basketball Athlete of the Month. Avery has been a true leader both on and off the court throughout her career, but has taken that to another level this year. She averaged 17 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game during the month of December helping the girls to a 6-1 start to the season. On December 6th, Avery scored her 1,000th career

point in a win at home. Congratulations Avery! Keep working hard and being the leader that you are!”

Students also participated in an allclass activity and provided ideas on how they can conserve more energy at home.

Stearns Electric’s live, energized home and farm model was the highlight of the presentation. Used as a tool to show students what can happen when they get too close to electrical equipment, students were fascinated with the electrical sparks and arc flashes demonstrated on the model.

Teriana and Brandon Voller of Upsala are proud to announce the birth of their son, Brantley Conrad Voller, born January 1, 2019 at 8:15 p.m. He was the first baby in the new year in Sauk Centre.

Brantley weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long.

He is welcomed home by big brother Wesley, 6.

The school wide 2019 National Geographic GeoBee will be held at Upsala Area Schools auditorium on Thursday January 10 beginning at 1:15 p.m.

For the 31st year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic GeoBee for students in the fourth through eighth grades. Thousands of schools are competing in this year’s contest from all across the United States and the five U.S. territories. Also competing are Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been a longtime fan and have used your advice to keep my vehicles in top shape for many years. I try to follow all of the severe service intervals listed in my owner’s manual as you suggest but I feel I may be overworking the severe service times listed. I tow a heavy trailer every weekend in the summer and several times in the winter as well. My tow vehicle is a 2000 Chevy Silverado 4x4 half ton with 190,000 and I’m concerned about the differential fluids. How often should they be changed with the added towing load?

Devin in Wray, Colorado Dear Devin, Following the severe service intervals is a great place to start if you are concerned about longevity of vehicle components. There are some cases such as yours where we would recommend even more frequent changing of some fluids or at least checking their condition more often. The rear differential is going to be immersed in the water every time you back the vehicle in and because of this reason you need to check it more often for water intrusion which can damage the rear end. Front differentials don’t get used as much under load when not in 4-wheel drive but can also be subject to moisture intrusion.

When used in water such as your case we would recommend checking the condition of both the differentials at each oil change which should only take a couple minutes.

Dear Motor Medics, I have recently purchased my first all-wheel drive vehicle which is a 1999 Audi A6 Quattro. I have owned several 4x4 trucks but never an all-wheel drive car. My last vehicle was a Jeep that was all wheel drive and it still had a lever to change from low to high range. I can’t seem to find any knob or lever or reference to one in the Audi. Do allwheel drive cars have such things? Is there anything I need to do to make it operate? What about service? Is there something more I need to do being that it is all-wheel drive? I value your opinions which have greatly helped me I the past.

A few have them but in most cases such as yours the system is fully automatic and to operate it you simply need to drive the car as you normally would and when the system senses a slipping condition will engage both the front and rear driving wheels to gain traction. This is done either by means of electric clutches or viscous fluid couplings on most vehicles. The electric version uses sensors while the viscous version locks up by means of fluid in the clutches when a slip is sensed. As for maintenance, follow the severe service recommendations in the manual.

Swanville City December 4, 2018 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting was held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Jim Molitor. Also present: Angie & Brent VanRisseghem, Jeremy Boots, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Friday, November 9, 2018 were reviewed. A motion was made

by Deb Wood to approve the minutes as printed. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

City maintenance worker, Lonny, presented council with bids for snow removal from Maciej Construction and Big Stone Ranch. After discussion, it was decided that Lonny can call either business for snow removal being the bids were close.

Bids that were received on the 2008 city owned Kubota were looked over by the Kubota committee. Highest bid received was $7,255.00. The clerk will notify the highest bidder and make arrangements for pickup.

Mayor Lange presented to council resolution #18-1204A, accepting a donation from the Swanville Lions Club in the amount of $27,500.00 toward the purchase of a 2018 Kubota with attachments. Tony Maciej made a motion to accept the donation from the Swanville Lions Club. Mayor Lange seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The council appreciates the Swanville Lions Club for their generous donation.

Jeremy Boots, representing Moore Engineering, was present to discuss with council the water tower land and how much land would be needed for the new tower. He would like Lonny to work on a capital improvement list for the future.

Angie VanRisseghem, from Swanville Insurance, was present to go over the City’s 2019 insurance renewal policy. Replacement costs on city owned buildings and equipment stored were discussed. Angie will report back to council on questions that were asked about options that would be available on equipment coverage. Jim Molitor made a motion to not waive the statutory torte for the city.

Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The 2019 budget was handed out and discussed. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the 2019 budget. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The final levy for 2019 was discussed. After discussion,

Mayor Lange presented to council resolution #18-1204B stating Morrison and Todd County auditor/treasurer’s office will be the designated polling place for the City of Swanville.

Mayor Lange stated she would like to have the city workers yearly reviews done before the next council meeting.

Norm Carlson and Jim Molitor will conduct the reviews.

Deb Wood stated she has received complaints about truck drivers jake braking within the city.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Baggenstoss reported that the Fire Department was awarded a matching grant through the DNR for new pagers.

Rescue Squad: Report was submitted. There will be a car extrication training on January 26 at the fire hall. They will also have a refresher course coming up. Hanson reported they accepted the resignation from Larry Bartells with four years of service.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the January calendar.

Unfinished Business: Board of Appeals and Equalization Training: Johnson explained that everyone needs to go on line before Feb 1, 2019 and become certified to be on the Board of Appeals and Equalization.

New Business: LMC Leadership Conference for Elected Officials: Lana Bartells will be attending.

Morrison County Animal Humane Society: The Council chose not to move on this line item.

At least once a year, sit down with your investing pro to look at the funds you’re in. Make sure they’re still balanced. One sector of funds may go wild (like technology) while another struggles (like textiles), so you may have too much (or too little) money in one fund.

TIME + COMPOUND INTEREST Building wealth doesn’t happen overnight. Money needs two essential sidekicks to grow: time and compound interest—and they’re inseparable.

I’ve been in many places, but I’ve never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone.

I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family, and boss.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age, I need all the stimuli I can get.
