Stay motivated to stay ahead -By Harvey Mackay ones never take themselves out of the lineup Motivation and momentum are one dynamic duo. It’s a lot easier to stay motivated than to get motivated again. The same is true for momentum. Maintaining momentum is a picnic compared with restarting it. Comfortable in your job? Things look rosy? Tempted to ease up on the throttle and coast a little? Pinch yourself! When I need motivation, I remember a story from Jane Goodall, the naturalist trailblazer and gorilla champion, who told a fable that her mother used to read to her and her sister. “The mighty eagle is sure he will win, and majestically with those great, strong wings he flies higher and higher… Gradually the other birds get tired and start drifting back to the ground. Finally, even the eagle can go no higher… but that’s all right, because he looks down and sees all the other birds below him. “That’s what he thinks, but hiding in the feathers on his back is a little wren… and she takes off and flies highest of all.” That’s the danger of coasting, not giving it your all. Even when winning, people can coast. I was at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in China for the men’s 100-yard dash final. Usain Bolt from Jamaica blew away the field and won in a world-record-time. However, I couldn’t help but think how fast he could have run because he coasted at the end and looked around at his competitors. That’s surely not his style, meet after meet. You don’t have to tell Usain Bolt that competition is always against tomorrow, not yesterday. When you have momentum on your side,

keep rolling. You have to learn when not to take a break. You also need to know when trying is utterly useless. Manage your motivation in an energy-efficient way. When I was a young salesman, among the many lessons I learned from a seasoned pro was when to call a time out. Inexperienced salespeople have a tendency to celebrate a victory by goofing off for a while. That was exactly what I was doing one afternoon. Coming off the golf course I ran into the old-timer who was a competitor from the envelope wars. “Charlie, I only hope the big order you just landed wasn’t one of my customers,” I said. “Hell, no. I couldn’t sell a box of #10 envelopes to a chain-letter freak.” “Then why are you out here beating the daylights out of the ball instead of beating the bushes?” “Because when you’re cold, you’re cold, and when you’re hot, you’re hot. I need to loosen up a little. I need to get that win streak going again. I thought he was nuts not to be out calling on customers. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I was the one who had his priorities wrong. In sales, athletics, gambling and the stock market, we calculate success by percentages. But by focusing on the percentages, we lose sight of the way those percentages are achieved. They’re not earned in an orderly way but in streaks, in stretches and in bursts. A tremendous baseball player will hit .300, which means he gets three hits every 10 times at bat. That’s seven or eight hits a week. Many weeks, however, that great hitter won’t get his seven or eight hits. He’ll get two or three. He’s in a slump. Other weeks, he’s on a hot streak and everything seems to fall in for a base hit. The ball has eyes, eluding every fielder. He’s able to count the stitches on the ball as each pitch comes to the plate. That’s the week he gets 12, 13 or 15 hits and becomes a .300 hitter. The great athletes can’t explain their hot streaks any more than they can explain their slumps. But one thing is for sure. The smart

when they’re “in the zone.” The eternal optimist Yogi Bera, New York Yankee great, said: “I ain’t in no slump … I just ain’t hitting!” If you’ve ever been in sales, think back to the best streak you ever had. What did you do differently that week? I don’t know if ball players or salespeople are more superstitious than the average person. The successful ones in each field tend to look at the conditions that were present when they were on a hot streak. They try, try, try not to change them. Mackay’s Moral: Maintaining motivation takes no vacation. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne New Year

buildings and injuring people and real estate. Others brought the New Year in by attending religious services and having gatherings with friends and family. Most of these gatherings involved much less intoxicating beverages and more making of resolutions and singing Auld Lang Syne. Many celebrate the New Year by just taking a couple days off and attempting to recuperate from the holiday season. My New Year's celebration in my youthful days was always spent at my Grandfather's house, since December 31 was his birthday. He had 6 kids and many friends, so the small house was double stacked with people. The lunch that evening included several kinds of homemade sausage, Ma's steak tartare, potato salad, baked beans, homemade bread, dill pickles, horseradish, kuchen and red jello. It's easy to recall the occasion, but sad to remember that most of those in attendance are no longer with us. New Year is a really good time for changing a part of your life that is causing stress. You need to decide what is causing the stress, can you change it or try to change your feelings about it if you can't change it. Is it really important enough to screw up your life? For feedback or story ideas, email Tom at tom@swanvilleinsurance.com.

New Year. Why do we celebrate a New Year on January 1? Julius Cesar is the person that began the January 1 New Year. Going back thousands of years before Christ, people realized that there was a continual change of seasons and they wanted to note the changes in some way. There were many different times of the year that were chosen as the beginning of another year. Many followed the planting or harvesting of crops or the birth or death of an important citizen. Others followed the arrangement of stars based on their alignment annually. Julius Cesar realized that it would be easier for the world economy if everybody used the same dates for a year. He originally set the New Year to be in March, since it was spring and that would be a good time to start the year. However, there was a strong political push to change the New Year to January 1. So in 153bce, 90 days were added to a year and brought the New Year to January 1. Since the Romans had so much influence in most of the human population, most of the world changed to January 1 as the start of the year. It seems that the New Year created a need or reason for celebration, some celebrations lasted 11 days. Most celebrations included liquor and fireworks until about 1900 when fireworks were banned. The reason for the ban was to try to avoid the hazard of intoxicated individuals creating fires with the fireworks going into burnable

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce My message on Christmas Eve is going to be titled “The Gift." Giving of gifts is the universal love language. In other words, most people “feel” loved when they are given a gift. Now, I have done lots of marital counseling and in many situations, we “feel” like we are not loved because our needs are not met. There are 5 love languages (giving, touch, words of affirmation, works of service, and quality time) and if our spouse does not speak our language, they “feel” unloved. At Christmas time we see the gift of Jesus, but so many do not understand the gift. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 that he preached the gospel to them. Listen to his words… “Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." We all need saving from our life of sin. And so according to the Scriptures, we believe that Jesus came that first Christmas, later died for our sins, was buried, and then raised on the third day. This is the key to understanding the gift of Jesus at Christmas time. It’s not about us, or anything

we can do it’s only through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.” In the Amplified Bible Romans 10:11 says, “whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.” I counseled one couple that the wife said, “Do not buy me anything! It is a waste of money.” Unfortunately, the husbands love language was giving so we had an issue. But listen to me… the gift of Jesus’ work on the cross pays for our debt of sin. So, it is more than a gift, it is our Salvation and Redemption! -Pastor Bruce Miller from Swanville Bible Church, 320-547-2916

Together, Albert and Clarice farmed on his family farm for over 20 years. He had a passion for farming, especially driving the tractor and watching the crops grow. They made the decision to quit dairy farming and he started working for Stone Containers in St. Cloud for the next 20 years. Family was very important to him, and he took great pride in helping his three children build their homes; he was always ready to help anyone in need. In addition to farming, one of his other passions was ice fishing and taking trips up north with the “boys." Sudoku

Word Search Answers from Dec. 14

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’d like to slowly start a business online while working my regular job. But even though I’m in pretty good financial shape, I don’t have much money left at the end of the month. I have no debt except for my house, and I also have nine months of expenses in my emergency fund. How can I start my business without borrowing the money? -Kirsten Dear Kirsten, I like where your head is. Start and run your business with cash. Period. Even if it takes a little while to get things off the ground. That should be a guideline for every entrepreneur. But guess what? You may have more money on hand than you think. You’re a little heavy on your emergency fund right now. I recommend people have three to six months

of expenses set aside for emergencies. You could back your emergency fund down to six months of expenses, and move the extra over to an account designated for your business. After that, grow it slowly each month until you have enough to open your doors. You’d be surprised how much cash will pile up, even if you save just a little bit at a time. The big thing, Kirsten, is don’t be afraid to start small. Don’t despise humble beginnings. Some of the best and most successful companies in America started as micro-businesses or cottage industries. I literally started my company on a card table in my living room. It’s easier and safer in a lot of ways. So, I love the wisdom you’re showing by wanting to keep your full-time job while starting the business online. So, yeah. Take three or four months of expenses out of your emergency fund, and move it to a designated business account. Watch your budget carefully, and keep spending to a minimum. Above all, don’t take your business into debt. Grow it at the speed of cash. The best, most successful businesses don’t outrun their money and other resources! -Dave * Dave Ramsey is a seven-time #1 national best-selling author, personal finance expert, and host of The Ramsey Show, heard by more than 18 million listeners each week. Sudoku Answers from Dec. 14

Ask The Motor Medics® From the Hosts of the Under The Hood radio show.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 six-cylinder engine that failed. This is the first time I have ever had to replace an engine in a vehicle and with fairly low miles and a faithful maintenance history I am shocked that it failed. They told me the camshaft failed because I was not using an engine oil additive and that if I did not use one on the new engine every time that the engine warranty coverage would be void. Why have I never heard of using an additive before? I thought they were not needed for everyday use. The place that changes my oil is not where I go for bigger repairs and I have not had to see them for several years. -Scott in Dell Rapids, SD Dear Scott, Seeing a Jeep engine with low mileage fail when oil additive has not been used is not a surprise to us. The lack of ZDDP in the engine oil was likely the cause. ZDDP was removed from engine oil around the time diesel fuel had most sulfur removed. ZDDP protects high pressure areas such as the flat tappets of the Jeep cam. All oil change facilities should be offering the additive to you as a choice. A yearly check-up at a full-service shop is also a good way to get good advice. They can often advise you of recent changes. -Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I replaced the air conditioning compressor on my Dodge Caravan before the last winter and it worked great for the short time, I used it before winter and again this spring until the first really hot day. The system stopped working and started making a grinding noise just like before. The shop that fixed it installed a new drier and a new compressor and charged me for Freon and labor. Did they miss something, or did I get a bad part? -Jennifer in Missouri Dear Jennifer, It worries me when you say the system is grinding

again. According to the list of replaced parts you gave it is possible that the failure could be due to the way it was repaired. Not to doubt the installation but when a compressor grinds it is usually coming apart internally and leaving metal shavings in the system which will plug passages in the condenser and expansion devices. If there was metal found in the system, any parts contaminated must be replaced. Just flushing the parts is not an option because of the small passages that can’t be accessed. Partially plugged systems may work well on cooler days but will fail when high temps raise pressures. When the system is repaired this time ask about these parts and if they need to be replaced and why or why not. With the high cost a second opinion is not a bad idea either. You don’t want this to happen again. -Take care, the Motor Medics For entertainment only. Always consult your local shop and follow all safety procedures before repairs. Come visit the Motor Medics® online at Underthehoodshow.com.
