A young college graduate, determined to find a position with a reputable company, began seeking interviews. Although she faced continual rejection, her persevering talent kept her goals in mind. One busy personnel manager, flooded with applications, suggested the hopeful applicant check back in 10 years.

“No problem,” said the young woman. “Would a morning or afternoon interview work best for you?”

This young woman had what I call the three Ds – desire, determination and dedication. Desire is sometimes more important than talent. She knew what she wanted and was not going to get sidetracked. Desire, determination and dedication are necessary to keep your mind focused on reaching your goals. People with desire work harder, are obsessed with their goals and are driven by an intense thirst to be better. There are few shortcuts in life.

Only the truly dedicated people ever come close to attaining their goals. They won’t let anyone, or anything interfere with what they truly desire. Success starts with the desire to achieve something.

“To win, you have to have the talent and desire – but desire is first,” said golfing legend Sam Snead. Along with Snead, I had the privilege of playing in the St. Paul Open tournament back when I was playing college golf for the University of Minnesota.

Another golfing legend that played in the same tournament, Gary Player, said: “To succeed in life one must have determination and must be prepared to suffer during the process. If one isn’t prepared to suffer during adversities, I don’t really see how he (or she) can be successful.”

It is important to realize that not only must you know what you want, but you must really want what you want, if you are to get what you want.

Desire alone is not enough. To lack desire

means to lack a key ingredient to success. Many a talented individual failed because they lacked desire. Many victories have been snatched by the underdog because he or she wanted it more. So, if you desire intensely and you act upon it, then everything stands within your reach. Dedication is the key that unlocks doors to great opportunities.

I like to say, if you don’t climb the mountain, you can’t see the view. In most cases, IQ is less important to a person’s education than I will.

Baseball great Willie Mays said: “In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Without a total 100 percent dedication, you won’t be able to do this.”

Katharine Hepburn, the only actor to win four Academy Awards for Best Actress, always wanted to be a movie star, although the road to her dream was filled with obstacles. She was fired from several stage roles, criticized for talking too fast and having a raspy voice, considered ornery and difficult to work with and being judged too skinny and masculine.

Undeterred by an insulting press, she sought the help of a voice and drama coach who tutored her through several theater roles until she received great reviews, which led to a movie contract and stardom.

Civil rights leader Vernon Jordan said people constantly advised him to lower his sights, but he said, “The more people tried to discourage me, the more determined I got.” Fortunately for determined people like Vernon Jordan and Katharine Hepburn, discouragement spurred them on to greater things. They, like other determined people, possessed the stamina and courage to pursue their ambitions despite criticism, ridicule and unfavorable

circumstances.

Astronaut Scott Carpenter was constantly in trouble as a young boy. While recuperating after a near fatal car accident, he dedicated himself to turning his life around and later became the second American to orbit the earth.

You may never be an award-winning actress, an astronaut, a civic leader or a sports icon, but you can succeed at your dream if you follow their examples and never give up.

At 211 degrees, water is hot. One slight change – one more degree – and it boils, changing into steam. And steam can power a locomotive. That minor change of one more degree makes all the difference. That one extra degree in business and in life separates the good from the great. It’s your life. You are responsible for your results. Never be afraid to turn up the heat.

The Hunt

Most of the deer hunters have completed the 2022 hunt. Now that it is history, it would be a good time to ask yourselves, why? Why do all of those hunters go through a mental and physical change each fall. Their primary subject of conversation is recalling hunting experiences from previous years and in some cases, allowing hair to grow on their face to give the impression of prehistoric hunters. Plans for this years hunt begin formulating as soon as the first weather report mentions frost. The excitement increases as each day gets closer to the season.

The male deer goes into a period of thinking that is referred to as the rut. It almost seems that the mind of the hunter goes into a rut as the season approaches. Is this proof of human and animal coordinated thinking? Maybe we have more left over animal traits than we want to admit.

Lets follow a deer hunter on opening morning. It's close to 7:00 a.m. before one has much daylight, but at 4:30 a.m. the hunter is out of bed and getting together the items that will be needed for the long day in the stand. Since it will involve being outside for an extended period of time a really hearty breakfast is in order. Three eggs, bacon, toast and fried potatoes along with several cups of coffee should help protect the hunter from the cold. It's now 6:00 a.m. and it's time to load the hunter and the needed hunting supplies into the pickup and head for the stand.

It's rather quiet out here by the stand, however there was some rustling in the brush before getting to the stand. Don't know what that was. At a distance there are quite a few shots being fired, but nothing close.

The ladder going up to the stand is covered with frost, so extra care is needed. Quiet is an important factor when entering the world of the ever alert deer. Once on the stand, the items are arranged properly, because one must be prepared for the big buck. The left boot heel bumped the thermos, which resulted in a loud noise along with some human expressions of frustration that

should not be repeated. You don't want to crawl back down from the stand to pick up the thermos, so you'll pick it up later. Finally you sit down on the cold stand and begin the hunt. Boy, it's really quiet out here. Cold Too.

You hear a noise over to the left, but it doesn't sound like a deer. As it gets closer you realize that it is a gray squirrel digging around in the leaves trying to either find or hide food items. This activity changes in about 15 minutes when a red squirrel decides that the gray squirrel is messing around in his private domain, which results in more leaf noise and scratching on the branches until the gray squirrel leaves the area. The red squirrel then discovers you sitting on a stand in his private area and he spends the next few minutes giving you verbal warnings of what he would do to you if he was bigger and you were smaller.

A twig cracks directly behind you and to see what it is, you need to look around the tree that is on the back of the stand. Evidently you make too much noise, because when you locate the sound, you see a white tail and rear end disappearing in the swamp grass.

You climb down from the stand and pour a cup of coffee. You hear a branch crack, which makes your breath speed increase and you remember that you left the gun on the stand. The sound turns out to be a neighbor who just stopped by to see how you were doing. The big breakfast was demanding attention, so it's time to go home and get a bite of lunch and an hour's nap.

Sudoku

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey

Dear Dave, Is it even worth it to buy a house these days? I’ve always been told buying a house is the adult thing to do and that it’s a great investment, but I can’t find anything decent and livable in my area for less than $350,000. My wife and I are debtfree, and we’re expecting our first baby in January. I was hoping to get your advice.

Dear Craig,

I can understand how things might feel a little hopeless in your current situation. You’re probably feeling the weight of the responsibility a new life brings to the picture. Things are getting real really fast, aren’t they? Believe me, I get it.

The truth is you may not be ready to buy a house today. And that’s okay. Having a new baby on the horizon doesn’t mean you have to run out and buy a home. That little boy or girl isn’t going to know the difference between a house and an apartment for a long time. Right now, giving your child a safe, loving environment is the most important thing.

Now, looking down the road, is owning a house worth it? Yes. But it’s not worth doing

it at the wrong time or in a stupid way. You first need to make sure the income is there. Then, you need an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place along with a strong down payment. So, what if you don’t buy a home for another two or three years? Home buying should always be done with patience and wisdom.

There are two or three things that make buying a home a great long-term investment versus renting your whole life:

Rents go up every year. If you lock in a good, fixed-rate mortgage, that payment will stay the same.

The value of your home will increase. When you rent, you don’t own your residence, and you won’t benefit from the value of it going up.

Our study of 10,000 millionaires showed that most say two things were integral parts of their ability to build wealth: Good retirement investments and a paid-off home.

A house is a great wealth-building tool, and it can also stabilize the biggest line item in your budget—housing.

God bless you guys, Craig! -Dave

Ask The Motor

Dear Motor Medics, I'm having trouble with my turn signals on my 2001 GMC Yukon. They will randomly work on the passenger side and they never shut off after making a left turn. My local shop thinks it's the turn signal switch but at several hundred dollars to replace I'm a bit reluctant as this is just a truck I use to pull the boat a half dozen times a year and I don't have the extra funds, they go into my boat. Is the turn signal switch something that can be done at home by me?

-Brad in Davis, Oklahoma Dear Brad,

If you have a turn signal switch that has failed it cathan two hundred bucks. The switch controls the wipers, the turn signals and the cruise making it a multi-function switch so it has quite a harness of wires running down the column. If you want to tackle this item for the first time we suggest watching a you tube video about it first and then decide if you want to tackle it or spend the extra for a shop to install it. Different vehicles are set up in different ways with some requiring the removal of more or less parts to do this job so before you tackle one it's always good to know what you have.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My windows on my Dodge Durango are failing one at a time. The passenger rear failed first then the driver's side followed by the passenger front and now my driver's side is moving slow. This wasn't too bad until it got to the driver's side front. It's my drive thru window so it has to work guys. I also lost my A/C a few years ago so it would be nice to get some air flow. All of the windows made a grinding noise before they stopped and now the just grind when I try them. I can also push them up and down by hand.

What's my next step?

-Tony in Mason City, Iowa Dear Tony,

Windows are usually a fairly easy fix. The symptom you are describing sounds like a window regulator but you will need to have that verified before you throw parts at it. We wouldn't want you to spend unneeded money. If it is a regulator that's a fairly easy fix requiring about an hour of time or so per window to repair. The regulator and motor are an assembly that can be purchased aftermarket or even picked up used for a reasonable price. Some folks choose to do them at home as well. Depending on where you purchase the parts they may even come with instructions if new but watching an online video first is always important. Make sure the tracks are free from dirt too.

-Take care, the Motor Medics For entertainment only. Always consult your local shop and follow all safety procedures before repairs. Come visit the Motor Medics® online at Underthehoodshow.com.

A Snow Funny

A heavy snowstorm closed the schools in one town.

When the children returned to school a few days later, one grade school teacher asked her students whether they had used the time away from school constructively.

"I sure did, teacher," one little girl replied. "I prayed for more snow."

The Procrastinator’s Guide To Last-Minute Gifts

Maybe that little reminder just popped up on your phone letting you know that the Secret Santa exchange with your coworkers is actually tonight, not next week, and you have no idea what to get for Craig in HR. Maybe you had every intention of doing your Christmas shopping like three weekends ago, but stuff kept coming up, and you decided that was a problem for future you.

Well, the future is here, my friend, and it’s now called the present. But no matter when, why or how you’ve procrastinated on your shopping this season, I get it. I’ve been there. And I’ve got your back with some last-minute gift ideas that also happen to be budget-friendly. Now, instead of digging around to find that candle your grandma gave you last year so you can stuff it in a sad, wrinkled bag and call it a day, you can read this and hopefully get a better plan in place.

Here are my no-fail tips for finding the perfect, affordable gift at the eleventh hour:

1. Make a list of what they love: Even if it’s last-minute, you still want the gift to feel personal and thoughtful. So, a good strategy is to make a quick list of what you know about their likes, hobbies, etc. and then find a $10–20 item in one of those categories. (P.S. If you’re not sure, be observant at their desk or in conversation, or ask someone who knows them well!) If they’re a tech geek, there are plenty of fun gadgets out there, like headphones or small smart speakers. Do they love to write? Can’t go wrong with a nice leather journal or even a fancy pen.

If you really don’t know anything about the person, don’t panic. There are other ideas on this list that pretty much anybody will love (or you can jump straight to number 6).

2. Don’t be afraid to DIY: Okay, so maybe you’re not Martha Stewart, but the possibilities are pretty endless here. You could make baked goods or candy using an easy internet recipe and put them in festive bags. Or parents love framed photos of their kids and grandkids, and that’s a sentimental DIY that anybody can do.

If you do have artistic talent, you could look at the popular gifts that are trending on sites like Etsy and try to recreate them. Make an orna-

ment, hand-letter a sign, do a watercolor portrait of the family dog, you name it. Pinterest is another great resource—just look up “easy homemade gifts” and scroll to your heart’s delight.

3. Group items together: You can easily combine a few related items to make it look like you put more time and effort into the gift than you actually did. For example, for coffee addicts, you could pair a nice bag of dark roast with a mug and some flavored syrup. Foodies would appreciate a few obscure-but-delicious snacks. You could give the pet parent in your life a collection of treats, toys and maybe even one of those cute tiny sweaters that their pet is sure to hate. For someone who just needs to relax, you could put together a self-care package with some tea, a face mask and a candle. And don’t forget about one of my favorite last-minute options (for those who partake): a bottle of bourbon with a cigar.

4. Invest in an experience: Some people would way rather spend quality time than get more “stuff,” which is lucky for you because experiences make great last-minute gifts. You can use an app like Canva to make a cool-looking invite or voucher for an activity that you two can do together in the future. Or just go ahead and buy the tickets or passes online and print them out. This could be anything from a movie to miniature golf to a comedy show—whatever fits your budget.

5. Don’t overlook the cheap stores: You can actually find great gifts. No one has to know where they came from. You might even want to look for gifts at the gas station. I’m not a gambling man, but I’ve gotten $5 or $10 crossword scratch-off tickets for my whole family before, and let me tell you, it was a blast!

6. When in doubt, grab a gift card or gift certificate: When’s the last time you heard someone complain about getting a gift card or certificate to a place they love? Oh, right. You haven’t. Plus, this is the ultimate solution if you’re running low on time. If you want to make it feel more personal, write a heartfelt note to go with it.

Hopefully this list has helped you get some ideas flowing for last-minute gifts.
