Obituaries Richard L. Klasen

Richard L. Klasen, age 77, died from various medical issues on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at his home in Melrose with his family at his side.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 31 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Stephen Arnold assisting. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Military honors were by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

On May 23, 1934 Richard Klasen was born the son of Ben and Theresa (Engelmeyer) Klasen of St. Rosa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. On February 11, 1961 he married Alice Finken in Freeport. After their marriage, the couple lived in Melrose. After the service, Richard was employed by Melrose Motor until 1963 when he was hired by the city of Melrose.

Over the 31 years with the city of Melrose he held many different positions. For 22 years he was a member of the Melrose Volunteer Fire Department; two of the years he was an EMT and on the Melrose Ambulance Corp. After his retirement, he stayed on as a dispatcher for the city. In 2010 he celebrated his 25th year of sobriety. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and spending 320-547-0050

time at the lake with family and friends.

Richard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Melrose.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Alice Klasen of Melrose; children, Sandra (Lloyd) Zierden of New Munich, Renee (John) Blonigen of Melrose, Joyce (James) Terwey of Melrose, Lyle (Peggy) Klasen of Albany, Pamela (Kevin) Funk of St. Joseph, and Kurt (Angie) Klasen of Meire Grove; 16 grandchildren; sisters and brother, Irene Kerfeld of Elk River, John (Margie) Klasen of Sauk Centre, Lorraine (Ray) Wenker of Melrose, Millie (Virgil) Buening of Key Stone Heights, FL, and Janet (Marvin) Notch of Melrose.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Theresa Klasen; and brother in-law, Norb Kerfeld.

Serving as casket bearers were Jeff Zierden, Jen Zierden, Andy Zierden, Matt Blonigen, Luke Blonigen, and Alisha LeClaire. Cross bearer was Megan Stroeing, scripture bearer was Shannon LeClaire, and remembrance bearers were Nicholas LeClaire and Eric LeClaire. Gift bearers were Kim Anderson, Julie Voigt, and Stacy Butkowski. Bell ringers were Brandon Funk, Justin Funk, Ryan Stroeing, Erika Westermeyer, Jamie Klasen, and Krista Klasen. Honorary bearers were the Melrose Volunteer Fireman (current and retired) and their wives, Richard’s fishing friends and their wives, and Eagles Crossing friends.

Alvin Bernard Frieler was born November 2, 1931 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to George and Mary (Wenker) Frieler. On September 1, 1953 he married Rita Kerkering. Al was a well-known man by many, whether he was farming, working for Pep’s Pork, Kraft Foods, or gathering with friends to play cards and enjoy their company. His family meant the world to him and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to share.

In celebrating Al’s life, he will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

His spirit lives on in the hearts of those

who knew him. Al believed he had a blessed life and lived every day to the fullest. Al was thankful to have had a wonderful marriage to Rita and cherished his family and friends.

Al was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Knights of Columbus, Council 1633.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Frieler of Melrose; children, Don (Leann Rage) Frieler of Lake Park, Dar (Ken) Douvier of Melrose, Gary (Val Larson) Frieler of Lake Park, Tom (Barb Fritzlar) of Melrose, and Jeanne (Dean) Elfering of St. Rosa; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; sister and brothers, Doris (Ervin) Goebel of St. Joseph, Vern (Aggie) Frieler of Grey Eagle, Ed Frieler of Melrose, and Duane (Rita) Frieler of Elrosa; sisters-in-law, Eileen Frieler of Annandale and Hildegard Frieler of Sauk Centre.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeron Frieler; daughter, Karen Nelson; granddaughter, Kristina Nelson; brothers and sister, Regina Frieler, Norb Frieler, Francis Frieler, Lloyd Frieler, and Lawrence Frieler; and sisters-in-law, Loretta Frieler and Viola Frieler.

Al will be missed by all who knew him, his love for life, and his good humor.

Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Mike Frieler, Cody Douvier, Austin Douvier, Ryan Elfering, Kurt Frieler, Jacob Frieler, Justin Frieler, and Chris Frieler. Cross bearer will be Megan Douvier and scripture bearer will be Travis Frieler.

Thomas B. “Tom” Hiltner, age 68 of Melrose, died Sunday, October 30, 2011 at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, November 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

Thomas Bernard Hiltner was born August 13, 1943 in Melrose, Minnesota to Norbert and Agnes (Herzog) Hiltner.

On August 27, 1966 he married Shirley Laing at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Tom has been a lifelong resident of Melrose and worked at Stearns Electric for 32 years, retiring in 2005.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and was treasurer of United Steel Workers Union Local 8392

for Stearns Electric. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, playing cards, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Shirle Hiltner of Melrose; daughters, Kim (Kris Johnson) Hiltner of St. Martin and Kelly (John) Carver of St. Paul; grandchildren, Haley and Jackson Carver; brothers and sisters, Jen Toenies of Melrose, Annie (Ervie) Thielen of New Munich, Mike (Ann) Hiltner of Cold Spring, Bridget (Vern) Westbrock of Rochester, Jim (Jan) Hiltner of Limon, Colorado, Ruben (Ialeen) Hiltner of Alexandria, Gene (Laura) Hiltner of Greely, Colorado, Mary Decker of Melrose, and Chuck (Ruth) Hiltner of Baxter; and sister-in-law, Iris Hiltner.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sisters, Jerry Hiltner, Lu Rieland, and Rose Mary Hiltner; and brothers-in-law, Marvie Rieland, Harry Toenies, and Dave Decker.

Serving as urn bearer will be Shirle Hiltner. Cross bearer will be Haley Carver and scripture bearer will be Jackson Carver.

I’ve Got So Much to Do -By Saralee Perel

I’m heading his way. He stands on his back feet and reaches up with his front paws to be picked up and cuddled. One day last week he did that 4 times, and each time I said, “Hi sweetie,” and rushed past his open arms.

Something is very wrong with this picture.

Last Wednesday, Bob said something while I had the phone in one hand, ordering business supplies. At the same time, I was putting chicken in the microwave to defrost it. He then left for an hour to walk the dog. When he came back, he saw I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

He looked at his watch. “What about our meeting?” I was in the middle of replying to 11 e-mails. Still e-mailing, I said, “What meeting?”

“I reminded you over an hour ago about our meeting.”

What was he talking about, I wondered, continuing to type away. He

I am so busy.

Usually my mind is racing — thinking of everything I need to do. As I’m zipping through the day, if somebody needs me for something unnecessary, I postpone whatever that may be. Though in reality, I never really postpone requests. I just wind up never doing them.

Did you miss the three most important words above? “Somebody needs me.” Well, I’ve missed those words for years.

“How was your day?” my husband, Bob, usually asks. “Fine. How was yours?” I rarely hear his answers. I’m always in the middle of a dozen things.

My cat Persy adores me. I love him, too. He does an endearing thing when

stopped me by tenderly taking my hand.

I said, “I’m sorry, sweets. I have to email these people back right away.”

He gently took both of my hands so I couldn’t type, sat next to me and said, “You’re always so distracted that you don’t even hear me. I feel like if I told you we won the $200 million lottery jackpot, you’d say, “That’s nice. How was your day?”

“I can’t help it,” I said defensively, pulling my hands away from his loving hold. “I’ve got 10 things to do.”

“There will always be 10 things.

Now I’m going to have to reschedule our meeting. You tuned me out entirely today.”

“I’m so busy, Bob. I want to talk.

Really I do. But sometimes I’ve got too many things going on.”

“Too many things more important than me?”

Boy, did that startle me.

And so, I began my new odyssey. I began to follow a practice called active listening.

At the supermarket the next day, a very old woman was trying to keep the door open to the freezer section while reading ice cream labels. She said, “The print’s so small.” Normally I would have nodded and continued on. Instead, I actively listened.

I stopped my cart. “What kind are you looking for?”

“Any brand of vanilla that has strawberries.” Resigned, she closed the freezer door and said, “It doesn’t matter if I buy ice cream.”

“No way. Ice cream matters a lot!

We’re on a mission.” We both laughed.

I could see better than she could.

And with my poor coordination, she could keep the door open better than I could. As a team, we found vanilla with strawberries. “Voila!” I said, as I put the ice cream in her cart. What a grin she gave me. I then realized how many wonderful opportunities I’ve let pass by because I’ve had “too much to do.”

Sing Handel’s Messiah rehearsals

The Long Prairie Chamber Orchestra is forming a community chorus to perform Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School Auditorium.

Upsala October Athletes of the Month By Assistant Football Coach Mark Herbes Mitch Lange has been named the October Athlete of the Month in football at Upsala Area Schools.

Mitch is the son of Darren and Tammy Lange.

Mitchell Lange He is a sophomore at Upsala and plays the tailback position on offense. He also is a linebacker on defense.

Mitch was selected captain of the team this year. The fact that he is a sophomore captain is a real tribute to his leadership qualities. “Mitch lets his actions speak louder than his words,” comments USA Patriots Assistant Football Coach Mark Herbes. Coach Herbes also added, “I think Mitch coined the phrase there is no me in team. This is definitely Mitch’s M.O.”

What could happen if the Levy does not pass? The editor of the Long Prairie Leader has requested specific information about the upcoming operating levy referendum and this week’s column is a response to those and other questions.

Please note that the information in this article is the opinion of the Supt. and does not necessarily reflect the views of the School Board.

The Long Prairie-Grey Eagle School District is asking voters to extend the current $700/student operating levy. This is not an increase in taxes; the District is not asking for additional money, we are seeking an extension of the current levy.

Question #1: If the operating levy passes, what will the money be spent on and being as specific as possible, what will happen if the levy question fails?

LPGE currently has a levy that will generate approximately $975,000 in revenue for the District. These dollars are not specifically tracked; however, the money is spent on salaries, benefits, supplies, transportation and co-curric-

ular activities; if the levy is successful, the money will continue to be spent in these areas.

The following is the opinion of the Superintendent and all items would need to be approved by the School Board; the following, in my opinion, is what is likely to happen if the levy does not pass: 1. Reductions in teaching positions will have to be made that will increase class size and reduce programs. It is anticipated that all grade levels could be reduced to two (2) sections (currently 3 or 4 sections) which will increase class size to approximately 33 to 40 students per classroom (on average).

2. Athletic programs will be most likely reduced to two per season; music programs will be reduced to one choir per school level and lessons will no longer be offered; physical education will no longer be offered every day.

3. Vocational programs and foreign languages would likely be reduced or eliminated.

4. The College in the Schools program would likely be reduced or eliminated.

5. The ITV programs would likely be reduced or eliminated.

6. The Middle School office will most likely be closed and the business office will need to be reduced as well.

7. Paraprofessional positions will be reduced subject to specific student needs.

8. Custodial staff will be reduced which will likely result in rooms not being cleaned every day.

9. Weekend events will need to be severely curtailed or eliminated.

The LPGE School District has made over $2,000,000 in reductions in the past three years including closing a building, reducing administration, reduction of instructional staff, elimination of academic programs, as well as reduction in clerical, paraprofessional and custodial staff.

In addition, we have taken steps to limit or eliminate post-employment benefits from our contracts.

When the Crowd Boos -By Dr. John C. Maxwell President Harry S. Truman readily took responsibility for his decisions, and he was famous for saying, “The buck stops here.”

Though his approval ratings were only 2030% for much of his presidency, Truman didn’t waver. “I know the public is against me,” he’d say, “but they’ll come around.”

Truman entered the election year of 1948 as a vulnerable incumbent.

Yet rather than shying away from thorny issues, he made two bold moves that generated fierce criticism:

he backed the creation of the state of Israel and desegregated the military.

Despite trailing in nearly every preelection poll, Truman maintained hope and campaigned tirelessly around the country. On Election Day, newspapers were so certain of the outcome that they published headlines reporting Truman’s defeat. However, when the votes were actually counted, Truman emerged victorious. Historians consider his reelection the greatest upset in the history of the presidency.

The price of leadership is criticism.

No one pays much attention to last place finishers, but when you’re in front, everything gets noticed. Since leaders live with criticism it is important to learn to handle it constructively. The following four-step process has helped me, so I wanted to pass it on to you.

New reading tools available on GRRL Library catalog Great River Regional Library (GRRL) has added a new feature to its catalog of materials making it easier for readers, parents and teachers to find suitable books for individuals at various reading levels.

The catalog (at http://pac.griver.org) now displays Lexile® audience and item measures, Accelerated Reader® item reading levels and interest levels, and Scholastic Reading Counts!® item reading levels and interest levels for a wide range of titles.

Each of these tools helps a reader to know if the book is a suitable choice.

Readers can search by level from the catalog’s “Search by Number” drop down menus or link to other books at the same level as a reader favorite. These enhancements have been added in response to frequent requests from students, parents and teachers for reading level guidance.

The Reading Tools: A Lexile measure indicates an individual’s reading ability or the difficulty of a text. A student gets his or her Lexile reader measure from a reading test or program. A book gets a Lexile text measure when it is analyzed by an automated system.

teens scores 1020, and “Robert’s Rules of Order” scores 1500.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized progress-monitoring tool that provides feedback on students’ comprehension of books they have read. AR uses a scale to show the difficulty of a text. For example, a level of 4.5 means the text could likely be read by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth grader during the fifth month of school. AR Interest Levels are helpful when trying to find a book that matches both somebody’s interest level and reading ability: for example, finding a book to interest a ninth-grader whose reading ability is at the sixth grade.

“Hatchet” has a AR level of 5:7 and an AR interest level of Middle Grades 4-8.

Scholastic Reading Counts! (RC) is a reading program for Grades K–12 which combines reading practice and software-based reading assessment.

“Hatchet” has an RC level of 6.3 and an RC interest level of 6-8.

The library does not have tools for measurement of reading skills and interest levels, and does not measure skills and interest levels. The reading level information is added to basic catalog entries by a commercial vendor. New items must first be scored by Lexile, AR and RC before the entries can be modified.

The information is not available for all items, including some most recently purchased by the library.

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) provides library services at 32 public libraries in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties. It provides Central Minnesota residents with nearly 1 million books, CDs and DVDs, 250 public computers, programming and information services.

1) Know Yourself “Criticism is something you can avoid easily—by saying nothing, doing nothing and being nothing.” ~ Aristotle Over the years, people have tried to help me know myself. They often begin with the phrase, “I’m going to tell you something for your own good.”

I’ve discovered that when they tell me something for my own good they never seem to have anything good to tell me!

Yet, I have also realized that what I need to hear most is what I want to hear least.

From those conversations I have learned much about myself.

• I am impatient.

• I am unrealistic about time and process.

• I don’t like to give a lot of effort to people’s emotional issues.

• I overestimate the ability of others.

• I assume too much.

• I want to delegate too quickly.

2) Change Yourself Aldous Huxley said, “The truth that makes you free is for the most part, the truth we prefer not to hear.”

Here are the questions I ask to determine whether the criticism was constructive or destructive. a) Who criticized me?

Criticism from a wise person is more valuable than the flattery of a fool. b) How was the criticism given?

In my experience, the trustworthiest critics are those who give me the benefit of the doubt, attempting to see from my perspective before passing judgment. c) Why was the criticism given?

This question helps me discern whether the criticism was given out of personal hurt or with the intention to help me grow.

Grey Eagle City October 11, 2011 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 11th day of October, 2011 in Council chambers.

Council members present were Thom Muellner, Andrea Kraska, Dennis Barrett and Joe Arnzen.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann, Matt Zinniel and guest Ken Messer.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the minutes of the September 13, 2011 meeting as written. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Ken Messer discussed the following items with the Council: 1. The culvert under the alley behind his property needs to be cleaned out, and he would like to see an additional two and a half feet added. The culvert will be looked at by Maintenance employees when other ditch work is being done on Maple Street South.

2. He would like to put up a fence along the alley on the south side of his property. The current ordinance states that there is a twenty five foot setback from the edge of the road in to his property.

The following water/wastewater items were discussed: 1. The gate valve at the school has been installed.

2. Testing of the ponds for fall discharge has been taking place. Discharge will take place once the required testing is completed. No chemicals should be needed for the first round of discharging but there is enough chemical on hand if treatment is needed.

The following maintenance items were discussed: 1. Sewer jetting was contracted with and completed by

the City of Long Prairie.

2. All fire hydrants will be flushed.

3. The ditch on Maple Street South will be cleaned out by Maintenance employees based on written agreement with Todd County Public Works.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the cost to insulate a portion of the old shop for $237.88, with Maintenance employees to provide the labor. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve a building permit for Ken Messer to install a 20’ x 30’ cement slab in the front of his shed. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The annual Fire Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., in the Fire Department meeting room.

The Council discussed the opening of the pond gate for residents. There have been situations where the gate has remained unlocked, and there are items being taken out there that should not be there. Council members and staff are reminded that we need to be aware of what is going out there and who is out there and to be sure that the gate is locked.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the Veteran’s Memorial agreement as written. A second was made

by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the 2011-2012 Herdering, Inc Snow Removal Contract. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution may be read in its entirety in the Clerk’s office.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utility bills as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $767.86 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, $565.20 from the Sewer Fund to the Sewer Rehab Fund, $106.53 from the General Fund ($24.03 to Water Fund, $82.50 Sewer Fund) for Fire Hall, Old City Hall and Library utilities, and $10,871.07 from the Credit Union Checking account to the First State Bank of Swanville checking account for ACH payment of utility bills. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the payment of the bills as listed and to include the payment of the following: $2,520.14 to Minnesota Power and $3,345 to Update Building Supplies.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett and seconded by Thom Muellner to adjourn the meeting at 7:58 p.m.

“My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee,” said one.

“Yes, I know,” said another. “My cataracts are so bad; I can’t even see my coffee.”

I deliver pizza to help cover my college tuition. Once I called on a customer who sent their seven-year-old son to pay me. As he approached the screen door, I noticed he was carrying a check in one hand and two dollars in the other, which I assumed was my tip.

To my dismay, he pocketed the bills before handing me the check, which was for the exact cost of the pizza.

“Could that have been a tip?” I asked, trying not to sound accusatory.
