[EDITOR’S MESSAGE]

A Friendly Transition

May/June 2016 PUBLISHER Michael Rosset ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER Hope McLarnon EDITOR Katherine Moore ART DIRECTOR

MY HUSBAND USED that phrase to describe the

way in which he hopes our mutual retirement will unfold. Ian’s “idlement” began at the beginning of this year and mine, as of this printing, is official. However, we are far from being idle, although we now have the fearless option to do nothing if we so choose. I always envisioned my retirement calendar chock-a-block with volunteer assignments and so I set out ahead of time to learn of local opportunities. There’s no shortage on that front. Time helping at the food bank and assisting seniors top the list. Unlike other retirees who look forward to time cruising on the high seas or trekking in far off lands, long-distance travel is not a number one priority for either of us. I expect that Ian will get to know the lay of the land at as many local golf courses as there are sunny and/or cloudy days this year, whereas I’m keen to spend my greenspace time exploring hiking trails with a nearby hiking club to guide the way. Of course, there’s no shortage of books to read. Among the titles I intend to devote undivided attention to is Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game; I’ve had a copy for many years now without getting too far into it whenever I thought I had the time. I also fancy starting a book club with friends I have made since moving to our little town. Which brings me to emphasize how significant friends are at a time like this. All too often I confess to seeing friends sporadically over the years, slotted into a schedule like an assignment with a deadline. Those days are gone, to be replaced with long leisurely lunches discussing the minutiae of our lives. I now appreciate that enduring friends plant themselves in your soul like hardy perennials that can weather all climates and still rise elegantly to greet you after wintry absences. Thank you to the many ACTIVE LIFE contributors who shared their time and expertise over the years. I know my successor Catherine Daley will thoroughly enjoy managing this inspired publication. Cheerio!

[FINANCE]

The first three months of

retirement

Meet with the professionals

In the first three months make sure you make an appointment and meet face-to-face with all the professionals that help you with your money. They can help you understand where you realistically stand financially. This would include an accountant, your financial advisor and lawyer if you have one. Also take some time to

Calculate your money commitments then be sure to relax and treat yourself too

meet with your kids, or someone else you trust, after. This is to let them know where your finances are at. It’s important that someone close to you knows about all your investments, bank accounts and other assets.

Set goals

Just because you have retired doesn’t mean you stop setting financial objectives. Make a 5-10-15 year plan. What do you want to accomplish and get done working with this time horizon? If an extended world tour is on the agenda in five years, you have to start planning now, making sure you have enough money. Also, start making arrangements for someone to watch your place while you’re gone, or if you’re renting it out (which is the smartest thing to do) finding a tenant by then.

Your legacy

Now is a good time to start thinking about your legacy. It’s not coming for many years, but now that you have stopped working you should have a fair idea of how much money you will

want to leave as an inheritance. Start thinking about where you want your assets to be distributed. If you plan on spending it all on yourself, that is awesome, but still make a plan. Some retirees choose to give their children a living inheritance, which is a great idea. You get to see how that money will help them and it also can save on some capital gains tax.

Spend it

Like I said at the top, you’ve been saving for retirement for a long time and now you should start to take advantage of all that hard work. Drop some of your frugal ways, treat yourself, and relax. After you’ve figured out what your money situation is exactly, it’s time to spend any surplus you have. For example, if your cost of living is $3,000 a month and you’re netting $3,250 a month, spend the remaining $250 on you. Use it towards a holiday, a new dress, a dinner with friends, whatever it is that enriches your retirement. Do it! You deserve to. On another note, I just want to take this opportunity to wish our amazing editor Katherine Moore a wonderful retirement. I wish you all the best as you start this awesome journey. I know you say you’re really frugal, but this is the time to bend some of those money-saving rules I’m always preaching. Now is the time to spend money on the people and things that make you most happy. n

As finance editor for HOMES Publishing Group, Rubina Ahmed-Haq also shares her expertise in our sister publication Condo Life. In addition, she is a regular contributor on CBC Radio, blogger at RateSupermarket.ca and has her own website alwayssavemoney.ca

The day that you shut down your computer, finish your shift, or walk out of your office building, for the last time can be filled with mixed emotions. Most retirees I know are excited about the future but also anxious about what the next chapter in their life will look like. Many also wonder if they have saved enough money to do what they want to do in retirement. You’ve spent your working life preparing for this time, saving your money, learning how to invest it and making plans. In the 90 days after you retire it is crucial you get a grip on your personal finances and know exactly where you stand. Here’s how to spend the first three months of freedom from work.

[COVER STORY]

If you have never heard of Dragons’ Den, the aspirational entrepreneur-based reality television series on CBC, most likely you’ve been living in your own dinosaurus den for the last ten years.

J

im Treliving, the original dragon, is a former RCMP officer turned highly successful businessman who, along with his partner, George Melville, is owner and chair of Boston Pizza International Inc. (BPI), through their company T&M Management Services. T&M is a billiondollar company that also owns Mr. Lube, Dermal Laser Centres, Stonebrook Benchlands Development, White Rock Commercial Real Estate, Kitchen Partners Limited, among others. A passionate venture capitalist, Treliving is also the author of Decisions: Making the Right Ones, Righting the Wrong Ones (Harper Collins, 2012), and most recognizably, an investment architect on Dragons’ Den. Known alternately as the “nice dragon” or the “quiet dragon,” Treliving is anything but a push over. “A lot of it is listening to other people, analyzing what they have to say. When you are listening to someone else you are mentally using your brain,” Treliving says. “On Dragons’ Den I listen, don’t say much, then I make the decision. If you talk to people who have been around me for a long time, they will tell you, I’m a little bit feistier than that of a ‘nice dragon.’ I can be tough if I have to be, and I’m strong as to what I want to get across.”

L to R: Jim with Dianne Buckner; Jim with wife Sandi and actor Lyriq Bent; with George Chuvalo.

As the recipient of a long list of prestigious awards and distinctions, which includes Canada’s Top Ten Most Admired Corporate Cultures, 50 Best Managed Companies Platinum Club, the Henry Singer Award from the Canadian Institute of Retailing and Services, the Canadian Franchise Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Canadian-American Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award (Texas), and the Order of British Columbia, Treliving acknowledges that up

to and throughout his 40s, his career was the priority. His ultimate focus centered on the business at hand, ensuring that it was running well and successfully on all fronts. However, Treliving says, the business as his driving force changed dramatically as he evolved through his 50s and 60s. “It became a question of, what am I going to do with the rest of my life,” Treliving says. “It was a question of how I could give back, how I could make a difference; that’s what changed in my 50s and 60s. They say as you grow older you get wiser; I don’t know if that’s true but you get more involved. You have a chance to sit back, and a chance to give back to the community.” When Treliving was in his 60s, life as he knew it spun on its axis, delivering fortune and fame on two highly visible fronts: Boston Pizza’s IPO and Treliving’s starring role on Dragons’ Den. “The IPO let me do things I couldn’t do before, including a lot of travelling. My role on Dragons’ Den had a major impact. It was a big transition and probably one of the biggest and hardest of my life. “Suddenly in my 60s I was being perceived as a rock star, (although I don’t see myself as such), and the notoriety was hard on my wife and my family. The show is aired in 14 countries and people stop me in the streets in places as far away as Italy and Australia. I have to be careful as to how I present myself, and I have to make sure it doesn’t cost me.” Treliving’s inherent beliefs and defining qualities started with the childhood grounding that he was not the most important person in the world. Those qualities manifest in his advocacies for a broad spectrum of communities, as well in his mentoring roles and sporting activities with young people. “As you get older, you go back to how you can help other people,” Treliving says. “I like to sit down with young people and tell them, ‘Look here’s the pitfalls I went through.’ I tell them, ‘Live your dream like I did. It’s all about that. That is the single most important lesson: don’t take life too seriously and live your dream.” Treliving’s empathetic heart, not unlike the outsize heart of a dragon, is deeply committed to the cause of helping both kids and disadvantaged Canadians of all ages across a spectrum of various endeavours. “I don’t want to be the richest guy in the graveyard,” Treliving says. Treliving’s daughter, Cheryl, is the Executive Director of the Boston Pizza Foundation,

(founded by Jim), an organization that has raised, since 1990, in excess of $10 million dollars to help Canadians in difficult circumstances. CAMH, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, is a personal cause that Treliving, along with his wife, Sandi, are committed to nurturing across the country. Treliving sits on the Board of the David Foster Foundation, which does replacements for lungs and hearts for kids, as well as Jays Care, an organization that helps boys and girls who might not otherwise have the chance or opportunity to get involved and play baseball. Treliving also sits on Hockey Canada’s Foundation, which has the goal of getting more kids involved and back into the game of hockey. At 75, Treliving is far from interested in seeking out a quiet place to retire and enjoy the legacy he has created; one, in fact that he is still in the epicentre of crafting. Twice yearly vacations—a winter sojourn in Hawaii and three weeks in the summer at Muskoka’s Lake Joseph, where Treliving revels in his love for golf—are virtually the only two occasions when he actually stops. Although, compared to most, it probably wouldn’t be considered a “hard stop.” “I can be decompressing and then compressing,” Treliving says with a laugh. “I go for long walks on the beach then I’m fired up and ready to go! I’ve invested in a couple of lots in Hawaii, and I’m involved in three golf clubs there.” Treliving does not hesitant when stating that there is not a lot that he misses about being young, other than the fact that when he was younger he was more carefree and, well, younger.

“I’m not as physical as I used to be, and the travel keeps me busy,” Treliving says. “I can’t play hockey like I used to, and I can’t hit the golf ball as far. But I’m not going to have a one handicap again or be on the ‘ Tour,’ so I don’t have to worry about that. I have fun with what I do, golfing and good business deals.” What is of tantamount importance to Treliving is his family, whom he considers the “gifts of this stage of his life.” His wife, Sandi, is an integral partner with him on his charities; his daughter, Cheryl, is a doctor at Children’s’ Hospital in Vancouver; his son, Brad, is the General Manager of the Calgary Flames; and his four granddaughters keep him “centered and busy.” Now he has great grandchildren just beginning to come along. Treliving muses that if he were a new supplicant on Dragons’ Den his pitch would probably revolve around a techie business, although he does reinforce that he is more of an investor now. “My bliss is about being involved in the action, being around young people and helping them make their deals,” Treliving says. “It’s about the next big idea and how I can be a part of it.” With all of Treliving’s gargantuan successes and an estimated net worth of $640 million, one might be forgiven for thinking humility might not be front and centre for such an achiever. Not so with the ‘quipwitted’ genuinely affable, loyalty-driven Treliving, who states, “Basically, I’m just a business guy selling pizza.” Well Jim, that’s one hell of a family-size pie you’ve created, topped with all the extras a humble boy from small-town Manitoba could ever hope for. n ACTIVE LIFE

earth’s splendor is all around us, once again endings make way for new beginnings. At ACTIVE LIFE we have our own ending and new beginning. Katherine Moore, our beloved editor, is retiring after 16 years at HOMES Publishing Group. I have had the pleasure of working with Katherine and will greatly miss her. Enjoy reading the May/June issue of BODY & SOUL, offering inspirational tips, techniques and behind-the-scenes information. I suggest starting at the beginning with “The Eyes Have It this Spring” followed by Dr. Sam Hanna’s article on “Cosmetic Innovations.” Dr. Hanna, our resident dermatologist, updates us on non-invasive procedures used to address the appearance of aging. A must read is Michelle Amerie’s article, “Living Outside the Zone,” which inspires us to live life to the fullest, no matter our challenges. Next is Helen Goldstein’s article “Anxiety & Fear: Balancing the Third Chakra.” Helen, a true disciple of Dr. Deepak Chopra, focuses on the third chakra, centre of power and will, to deal with this issue. In House Calls, Victor Minas discusses “Cosmetic Dentistry,” which highlights enhancing our overall smile. Something we all desire. Congratulations to... The EYES HAVE IT this spring For ageless beauty, enhance your eyebrows and lashes by giving them a natural lift. Try adapting the following techniques: • Start by shaping your brows. Using the handle of a makeup brush or a pencil, measure in a straight line from the left outer edge of your nostril to the inside of your left eye, up to your brow area. This is where your left brow should begin. Next, measure from the left outer edge of your nostril to the outer corner of your left eye, up to your brow area. This is where your left brow should end. The top of the arch should be in line with the outside edge of your left iris. Repeat for the right eye.

• Tweeze any stray brow hairs. If you are not sure where to tweeze, visit a salon or spa for professional advice.

• Before filling in your brows, try a lash primer: a lash boosting pre-mascara

lengthener and thickener which helps condition and prevent lash breakage.

• Fill in your brows with a brow pencil (same colour as your natural brow) or try a tinted, brush-on gel to help shape and build even the finest brows.

• Next, apply a lash conditioner to help improve the appearance of your lashes in length, fullness and thickness.

• Apply a conditioning mascara that not only gives you the “faux” lash look, but also nourishes the lashes and promotes faster and more dramatic growth.

• Try applying mascara by twisting your brush up in a fanning motion from under your lashes, starting from the outer corner, working in.

Cosmetic Innovations Keep your chin up!

F

ifteen years ago the first injectable neuromuscular blocker, Botox, was approved by Health Canada to treat facial wrinkles caused by the movement of facial muscles. With the addition of filler products to re-volumize the areas of the face that “sink and sag” over time, dermatologists can reduce the impact that aging has on facial beauty. Lasers and other energy-based devices completed the trifecta of non-invasive tools we use to address the appearance of facial aging. As dermatologists have continued to hone their skills (myself included) in the area of facial rejuvenation, the jawline and the neck remained a challenge because this part of some people’s anatomy resisted simple treatments. Over the years, the fresh, heart-shaped faces of our youth increasingly become a memory; we see a more square and jowly jawline develop, fat depositing in the neck, and the laxity of the skin and muscles. Previously, the only option I could offer was a referral to one of my colleagues who performed liposuction. While very effective, liposuction is more invasive and, as with ay treatment, does carry its own unique risks. For a non-invasive alternative, there were few good options—until now. Now we have safe, effective and non-invasive options for rejuvenation of the jawline, chin and neck. If each of the factors that produce the appearance of aging in this region are addressed, beautiful and natural results can be achieved without the need for more invasive procedures.

◆ JOWLS AND JAWLINE Filler injected

along the jawline can re-establish the fluid lines of a more youthful lower face. Interestingly, replacing some lost volume in the cheeks higher up can often help reduce the lower face sag. It often looks more natural to treat the whole face as a unit.

◆ NECK BANDS These vertical bands

of muscle that run from under the chin to the lower neck, and NECKLACE LINES (the horizontal wrinkles in the neck caused by neck flexion) can be softened using neuromuscular blockers (e.g., Botox).

◆ JAWLINE IMPROVEMENT can also

be augmented using a Nefertiti lift; injecting small amounts of these products along the jawline.

◆ LOWER FACE AND JAWLINE SKIN LAXITY Loss of elasticity that

contributes to the drooping of the lower face can be improved with the use of energy-devices that emit radio-frequency waves. This is a safe, non-invasive way to tighten the dermis from the skin surface.

◆ SKIN DISCOLOURATION AND FINE LINES Light-based devices such as

intense pulsed light and lasers can help address superficial skin colour and texture irregularities.

◆ DOUBLE CHIN Also called

“increased submental fat.” Good news! Health Canada has just approved a product called Belkyra; the first non-invasive treatment to get rid of submental fat without surgery/liposuction. Two-thirds of people surveyed say they’re bothered by their double chin. Belkyra is injected in a grid like pattern in the area of fat under the chin. Two to four treatments, spaced one to two months apart are often needed. The active ingredient in Belkyra, deoxycholic acid, safely and permanently destroys the fat in this area so it won’t come back. Belkyra was approved after an extensive global development program during which more than 1,600 patients were treated. n

Living Outside the Zone BY MICHELLE AMERIE

M

any years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). As a result, I use a wheelchair and I fully appreciate that you can get so stuck in your daily routine that it is difficult to imagine living beyond the present. Many of us do not put anywhere near our maximum effort into life—able-bodied or not. What will it take to move you to try something new, to step outside of your comfort zone and risk putting more into life?

GETTING STARTED

My first step was visiting Cort at the gym. He hooked me up to a six-rope pulley system. For every foot of rope I pulled, I actually pulled six feet. And

30

P30ms.indd 30

ACTIVE LIFE

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 6

my weight was evenly distributed, which made it seem easier to pull myself up. Cort was not my nemesis after all. I had been my own worst enemy, limiting myself even before I had left the ground. But the true test would be on my first outdoor climb. We went to the Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area in Milton, Ont. Not only was this beautiful country, I could feel the exhilarating experience start to grow. Slowly but surely I pulled my way up into the trees. Pushing myself physically made me feel alert and alive. My fears dissipated and morphed into a permanent smile. While hanging 35 feet in the air next to the rock, I had a great sense of satisfaction. Cort had given me a powerful and enduring gift—the positive sense of self. I will always value his knowledge and experience. The lesson that I learned yet again was that life gets a whole lot easier when you accept that change is inevitable and how important it is to get on with living. Instead of being afraid of what the next step is, just

CLIMBING ROCKS

For me, rock climbing seemed impossible. Just thinking about it took me so far out of my comfort zone. How can a person with a disability, who uses a wheelchair, possibly go rock climbing? The stability of my core and abdominal muscles is significantly reduced. Nobody with limited strength in his or her arms, and even less in their handgrip, could be able to enjoy this kind of a sport, right? Rock climbing is a whole body experience. And I can’t use my whole body. Cort McElroy, ACMG Instructor and General Manager of The Rock Oasis Climbing Gym, justified why my excuses were without merit. “Just check out Mark Wellman’s ‘No Limits’ website.” Mark Wellman is a two-time Paralympian champion wheelchair user. He is also a rock climber, having created an adaptive pull-up bar to make rock climbing possible for people with disabilities. I am the first to admit, I didn’t have the courage to take this on. As my anxiety heightened my confidence diminished, but deep down inside, I knew I really did want to try it.

Anxiety & Fear

Balancing The Third Chakra BY HELEN PACH GOLDSTEIN

The Symptoms Vary

Emotionally you might feel apprehensive, powerless, unfocused, irritable, fearful and easily fatigued. Physical symptoms can include shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, a rapid heart rate, digestive problems, headache, and insomnia. You might need to see a doctor if anxiety feels out of control. Your doctor might give you medication, or if she is a savvy yoga practitioner, she might suggest that you focus on your third chakra, your centre of power and will, to deal with this issue.

anxiety. It is believed to govern your digestive system and it helps generate personal power. Like the, sun which is our ultimate source of energy and light, it is bright yellow. The solar plexus chakra embodies self-esteem, will, and a sense of security. When this chakra is in balance, you are strongly intuitive, confident and emotionally fulfilled. You are grounded in a place of power and charity and there is no place for anxiety to creep in. When the third chakra is out-ofbalance, you may feel overwhelmed, irrational fear, and a sense of being closed off.

Visualization Exercise

This simple exercise is designed to help balance your solar plexus chakra. ◆

Sit or lie in a comfortable position.

Close your eyes and take a few deep, centering breaths.

Let your jaw drop a little, release your face and observe the sensations in your body.

If you feel tense, you can make a decision to let it go with a deep exhalation.

To enhance the sensation, make a loud sigh as you exhale. It feels good to let go!

The Solar Plexus Chakra

A chakra is an energy “wheel” that runs along your spinal column. The third chakra, one of seven, is perceived as bright yellow and is located in your solar plexus, roughly between your ribs and your navel. This is where the benevolent warrior gets her power: it is the centre of chi and qi as the ancient healers and visionaries divined it. Working the chakra takes a spiritual approach to deal with

32

P32yoga.indd 32

ACTIVE LIFE

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 6

A strong third chakra can be a powerful tool for controlling interactions as you assert yourself. If it is weak, it can result in indecision and passiveness. An overly strong solar plexus chakra can create domineering and aggressive interactions with others.

Place your hands gently on your solar plexus and see a ball of warm, bright yellow under your hands. The warmth of the sun-like ball under your hands feels comforting and nurturing.

Follow the breath and notice the hands moving up and down, observing your physical and emotional response to this simple, loving exercise.

See yourself as an innocent young child and send yourself love and acceptance, and ultimate healing. n

o you often have butterflies in your belly or a knot in your stomach? Do you have irrational fear? You may be feeling anxious for reasons unknown to you. Anxiety is our body’s way of alerting us to possible danger; a programmed reaction advising us to take flight. Some with severe anxiety wind up in the emergency room to be given breathing instructions, maybe oxygen, and sent home with medication.

WHERE EXPERTS ANSWER READERS’ QUESTIONS ON BEAUTY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

In this issue, Victor Minas, DD, FCAD (A), Founder & CEO of Smile Corp Inc., smilecorp.com, info@smilecorp.com , discusses…

Cosmetic Dentistry Q

Although I am a young-looking 58, my older dentures are showing their age and need to be replaced. Is there a difference between a regular dental office or a cosmetic dental office? Would veneers help, or do you have another suggestion?

A

There are thousands of dental clinics in Canada specializing in a variety of treatments. Some clinics provide only the basic maintenance service while others focus on enhancing the overall smile. Any dentistry that changes your smile can be considered as cosmetic dentistry. Missing teeth or older dentures can make you feel and look older. A smile makeover can certainly add to a more youthful look. Before a treatment plan is chosen, you need an evaluation and diagnosis according to your needs, with consideration for the health and function of your teeth and gums.

Dentures

Originally, dentures were made of wood, but eventually progressed to being made with plastic and porcelain teeth. Dentures are artificial teeth that replace missing teeth with full dentures or partial dentures, also known as “false teeth.” Both types of dentures are removable and need to be taken out to clean or to sleep. A great set of dentures will give you confidence in your smile and most importantly you will be able to chew and eat in comfort. In order to assure that your dentures are being made with a high-quality plastic, it is important that you go to a reputable and experienced denturist to have your new dentures made.

Veneers

Veneers are not like dentures, they are primarily for esthetics and are only placed on natural teeth and not on denture teeth. Think of a veneer as a panel which is supported to a wall. Veneers are cemented to the front

of a tooth that has had a large filling or a tooth that the shape is changed for a more attractive smile. Veneers are generally placed as a cover on front teeth only (mostly as you smile). Whether veneers are an option to brighten your smile or to change the shape of your smile will depend on if you have natural teeth that can be considered for this type of treatment. If you have full dentures, veneers are not an option.

Other Treatments

There are several options that might suit your needs. Depending on your evaluation and diagnosis, you may require a brand new set of full (upper and lower) dentures, which are held in by adhesion, cohesion and suction. Depending on your financial situation, there are other options with dentures that snap onto implants for a more secure fit, without feeling that they will slip or slide out while eating or talking. In general, choose a clinic with dentists, specialists and denturists that not only have the experience but also state-of-the art technology to provide you with excellent results in terms of function (chewing), esthetics (smile), and ease of care (hygiene and maintenance program). Likewise, an onsite denture laboratory will give you fast, efficient and precise oral appliances. n

here’s not enough time to play all the great courses that dot the Grand Strand on one vacation, which is why so many golfers keep coming back to Myrtle Beach. With almost 100, Myrtle Beach has a golf course to suit every handicap and budget. The greens fees for 5-star courses in Myrtle Beach are 40-50 percent lower than what’s offered in places like Florida and Arizona during the winter. But which courses should you play? Here’s a list of the Top 10 courses that the experts say golfers “must play” at least once while in Myrtle Beach. active-life.ca

Barefoot Resort— Dye Course

Heritage Golf Club

TThis is classic South Carolina Lowcountry golf at its best. Tom Fazio used the local typography – ancient oaks, pines, sand, natural grass and native grasses – and crafted one of his best designs ever at the Barefoot Resort. This truly is a natural beauty where waste areas and formal bunkers have been handcrafted and placed for visual and strategic effect, while natural elevation changes add a sense of drama and excitement to your round. Water features can be seen on 15 holes, yet many lakes are in out-of-play areas to ensure playability.

Most resorts are lucky to have one very good course, but Barefoot features two exceptional layouts - the previously mentioned Tom Fazio Course and the amazing Pete Dye Course. I consider Dye’s Ocean Course at nearby Kiawah Island to be my favourite in the U.S., with his Barefoot course coming in a close second. Dye used the local landscape to his advantage here – his course borders the natural white sands of Carolina Bays – and, while featuring the master designer’s infamous pitfalls, is fair to all handicaps. Like many European courses, the Dye Course does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes.

My first question when I arrived at this classic South Carolina course was: “Is this a golf course or a botanical gardens. The setting is stunning: giant magnolias, ancient oaks, fresh water lakes and lots of Lowcountry marshes. The only thing better than the visuals is the course. Heritage is ranked among the “50 Best Public Courses in America” by Golf Digest, and follows the natural contours of the land, stretching out beside long abandoned and historic rice fields. After my round, I enjoyed a cold one at the course’s southern colonial clubhouse and looked up at the heavens and said: “Take me now Lord, because golf doesn’t get any better than this.”

[MYRTLE BEACH]

Tidewater Golf Club

Tidewater Golf Club This 1990 Ken Tomlinson design dishes out low-profile fairways that ease past forested bluffs and along marsh-edged flatlands. Lots of photo-ops, so don’t forget your camera. The toughest hole is the 189-yard, par 3 12th because your tee shot must fly a marsh to a well-bunkered green.

TPC Myrtle Beach Grande Dunes

At Myrtle Beach, golf fees are often 40-50% lower than other destinations

True Blue Golf Club

Dunes Golf & Beach Club

My favourite area to play golf in Myrtle Beach is Pawleys Island, just a short drive from the Grand Strand. And one of the best courses in this Lowcountry section is True Blue, which rests in what once was a thriving rice plantation. Designer Mike Stranz utilized the fertile landscape of twisted live oaks and towering pines, tidal creeks and salt marshes as the backdrop for his masterpiece. True Blue was named the “No. 1 Public Course in the Myrtle Beach Area,” and made the list of “America’s Top 100 Public Courses.”

This is another Myrtle Beach course ranked in Golf Magazine’s Top 100 and although it looks like a private course it welcomes vacationers as well. This is a Robert Trent Jones design and many says its one of his best. The 590-yard, par-5 13th that doglegs 110 degrees to the right around Singleton Lake is a real challenge. Oh, and watch out for the alligators here!

Caledonia Golf Club This course is only 20 years old but its drenched in Lowcountry charm. Gnarled live oaks festooned with Spanish moss line the fairways at this beauty that’s ranked No. 27 on Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Courses.

Love at Barefoot Resort On this Davis Love-designed course, Love copied the legendary Donald Ross’s turtleback greens and the result would have pleased the old master. A re-created plantation house runs along five holes on the front nine and that makes for a memorable day. The resort offers discounted green fees for all of its four courses on Wednesdays throughout the year.

This Tom Fazio design is tough enough to host the 2000 PGA Senior Tour Championship and its Murrells Inlet location is one of the loveliest in the area. Treelined fairways dominate the front nine and there’s lots of water to contend with on the back. However, it’s a fair course and if you play it smartly, you’ll have a memorable day.

Grande Dunes Resort The Resort Club layout opened in 2001 and comes with views of the Intracoastal Waterway from multiple holes. At 7,618 yards from the tips, it’s one of the longest courses in the U.S., and there’s plenty of wind. n Visit the Myrtle Beach Golf website for a complete list of golf courses and the latest deals. myrtlebeachgolf.com For more travel inspiration from Marc Atchison, go to travelife.ca active-life.ca

Retail Therapy

While the exchange rate between the Canadian and American dollar isn’t what it was a year ago, travelling to the United States is quick and easy. Although you can access the Premium Outlet Mall across the Lewiston Bridge in New York State, your dollar will go much further at the numerous shoppng outlets in the Niagara Region. Canada One Outlets on Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls is open 364 days per year and, located just off of the QEW, The Outlet Collection at Niagara features more than 100 brands, including Mountain Warehouse, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Coach, J. Crew Factory,

To round off your retail therapy experiences visit downtown St. Catharines, the Pen Centre in St. Catharines and Jordan Valley.

Libations

The award-winning wineries of the Niagara Region could certainly be served up to the Greek gods, or anyone with a trained palate for the finer things in life. To encourage visitors to tour and taste responsibly, the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake

now offer Designated Driver Touring Passes. Accommodations, events, dinners and cooking classes are also available. Craft breweries are refining the art of making beer, and providing a penchant for new flavours. The Exchange is a brewery located at Niagara-on-the-Lake, while the Niagara Brewing Company is situated at the base of Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls.

Eight performances of Don Juan in Hell and Candida were held in the Court House auditorium that first year, and the summer theatre festival was born. The 2016 season runs from April 9 to October 16, and includes Alice in Wonderland, A Woman of No Importance and Sweeney Todd to name a few. You can visit the website for a list of plays at the Court House Theatre, Royal George Theatre, Studio Theatre and Studio Underground.

Points of Interest

The Botanical Gardens, the Floral Clock, Oakes Garden Theatre and Queen Victoria Park offer stunning seasonal displays. For the more adventurous, the Bruce Trail is the oldest and longest marked footpath in Canada. The main trail spans 890 kilometres, in addition to 400 kilometres of associated side trails.

In May, the blossoms in full bloom are a sight to behold. Various farmers’ markets and any number of roadside fruit stands can be found throughout the region. For peak growing seasons, visit the Niagara Region website. There’s nothing tastier than a Niagara peach. This year the 48th Annual Winona Peach Festival runs August 26 to 28. If golf is your game, check out these three outstanding courses: The Legends of Niagara, featuring 1,000 acres of natural landscape; the highly rated public Whirlpool Golf Course; and the picturesque par 3 course located on the grounds of the historic Oak Hall Estate. Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the slot machines and be sure to catch a show at Casino Niagara. It’s easy to see that this diverse region has something for everyone. No time like the present to discover what Niagara has in store for you.

COLLINGWOOD Trails Galore

The network of Collingwood trails now exceeds 60 kilometres. Wellmarked, multi-use trails are designed for individuals of all physical levels, and include in-town trails that are stroller-, scooter- and wheelchairfriendly, as well as those that appeal to the more adventurous hiker. In winter, trails are maintained for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing; snowmobiles are restricted to specially marked trails. In the 1840s, European settlers introduced apple trees along the southern shore of Georgian Bay where

[IN THE GARDEN]

SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL

BY MARK CULLEN

Garden Shopping As you elbow your way into the garden retailer this spring, there are some “tenants of garden shopping” that I recommend. These tips will go a long way in your efforts to produce great flowers, an abundant crop of fruits and veggies and, for the more ambitious, a terrific permanent landscape with good bones, as we say in the business.

the lowest price. Plants are living things. Much like fresh fruit and vegetables, words like bruised, overripe and best before yesterday just don’t cut it, regardless of the price. A great looking plant is not potbound, is not leggy, does not have yellowing leaves or is necessarily in full bloom. It is young, with roots that fill only half of the container. It is stocky and always green, and not necessarily in full bloom.

2 Labelling pays for itself. At this

time of year, it is not always easy to get gardening advice from a sales person. That’s why accurate picture labels are valuable. A good label is printed in Canada, is appropriate for for the growing zone, has a picture and cultural details on it. Place the label next to the plant in your garden.

3 Roots should not encircle the

inside of the container. Young, white fibrous roots are ready to take off in your garden. The roots must make a home in your soil before the top of the plant can thrive. Turn a plant upside down while at the garden

centre, gently remove it from the pot and inspect it. If the roots circle the inside wall of its container, put it back and choose a younger, perhaps less impressive looking specimen.

4 Full blooms are not always a good.

It takes energy for a plant to produce a bloom, which attracts pollinators (not buyers), and to reproduce. Garden performers have much more green growth than blooms. The power reserved in the plant’s roots is made available to push the blooms as the plant resides in your garden, not on the store shelf.

5 Recycling. Many garden retailers

take back your used pots and cell packs for recycling. Most municipal recycling programs do not accept used plastic plant containers. Retailers who provide this service deserve our consideration.

6 Buy wet plants. The sign of a good retailer is one who maintains the plants they sell. Mass-merchant retailers often allow plants to dry out in the store. A plant that dries out excessively “hardens off,” reducing

7 Look for blossom buds. If you

want colour in your garden sooner rather than later, look for plants that are loaded with blooms that will open in a few days or a week. These plants will give you a great performance in your garden, not at the garden centre. Finally, when you get your plant purchases home be sure to place them in a shaded side of your house until you get them into the ground. Water them as the surface of the soil in their container becomes dry, preferably with rain water from a rain barrel as it is nice and warm. Prepare the planting holes well, firm the soil around the roots of each plant with some “umph” and water well, right after planting. The performance of your new plants in your garden will now depend on regular watering when the soil becomes dry about one centimetre down, fertilizing with 20-20-20 every couple of weeks and keeping the weeds under control. n

the vigour that it had when it left the green house. Avoid plants that are lightweight (dry) as they may collapse before you get them home.

O

ne of the first complaints of aging is often related to increased difficulty stepping into a bathtub. Joints aren’t as flexible as they once were, and there is a fear of falling when getting in and out. Soaking in a tub of hot water, perhaps with bubbles and essential oils, has to be one of the most luxurious and relaxing gifts that we can give to ourselves. Sadly, it’s one of the first things that we have to give up when an existing bathtub is no longer accessible. The principals of The Water Closet showrooms are sticklers for carrying only the best products at their three locations in Etobicoke, Orillia and Kitchener. One of the most trusted companies of quality, manufactured goods for the bathroom is American Standard. American Standard has been a household name for more than 130 years, and it’s due to this reputation that The Water Closet showrooms have teamed up with them to offer the ultimate in home comfort – the walk-in bath. Living at home promotes independence and dignity. With the new walk-in tub from American Standard, ease of access and comfort are of high priority. Exclusive innovations include premium construction with a patented door system, a built-in safety bar, and a chair-height seat. With the patented quick-drain system, a full tub of water completely drains in less than 90 seconds. For thousands of years, hydrotherapy has proven to help alleviate such ailments as arthritis, muscle stiffness, back and joint pain, as well as circulatory and stress-related disorders. Take pleasure in the therapeutic benefits of a deep warm

Or choose a combination of both systems for the ultimate hydrotherapy experience. The walk-in bath has also received the Ease-of-Use® Commendation from the Arthritis Foundation. It’s inevitable that you’ll want to make changes to your home to accommodate different needs and requirements. Statistics show that more than 30 per cent of homeowners over the age of 50 are making home improvements so that they can remain at home, and avoid the high costs of retirement home living. Installing a built-in bathtub is easy

and efficient. They are sized to fit into existing spaces where an outdated tub is no longer practical. The Water Closet’s expert consultants will walk you through the process and discuss personalized recommendations, and set up an InHome Consultation that includes a visit with their mobile showroom. They will take accurate measurements and give a full explanation of the features so you can make the best choices to suit your needs. They will also set up affordable payment plans, as low as $150 per month, and installation to help get the job done right. For a limited time, The Water Closet and American Standard are offering purchasers of a walk-in tub a free Cadet® toilet. Restrictions may apply; see store for details. n

LIFE’S BETTER AT THE BEACH Crystal Beach, a destination hot spot

P

icturesque Crystal Beach, first made famous as a popular tourist mecca in the 1890s, has reinvented itself to remain a destination hot spot. The small picturesque town on Lake Erie was named for its Caribbean-like white sandy shores and crystal-clear lake water. In its heyday, crowds swarmed to Crystal Beach’s amusement park to ride on the terrifying Cyclone rollercoaster and to enjoy the majestic hotels, board walks, and big band entertainment. After the amusement park closed in the late ‘80s the area went through a lull, until recently when it was propelled back into the limelight by those who appreciate the coastal living lifestyle. Now, many people are relocating to Ontario’s South Coast to escape congestion and stress, with the added delight of paying small-town prices for a quieter, more relaxed and outdoor-focused lifestyle. The attraction is understandable. Crystal Beach offers a unique and beautiful setting. The town sits in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula surrounded by UNESCO Biosphere conservation areas. In addition to one of the best beaches in Canada, the outdoor activities include a network of hiking trails, as well as canoeing, waterfront sports and summer cycling. In winter, there’s crosscountry skiing on the doorstep. Niagara-on-the-Lake with its summer Shaw Festival theatre is a short ride down the Niagara Parkway. As are award-winning Niagara wineries and neighbouring Buffalo, with its world-class Albright-Knox art gallery, theatre, sports stadiums, restaurants, and malls. The appeal of Crystal Beach, and the work Marz Homes is doing there, is starting to gain some real notoriety as well. Their South Coast Village community has recently

64

P64EC_marz.indd 64

ACTIVE LIFE

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 6

received some prestigious awards, including the Ontario Home Builders’ Associations People Choice Award, and is a finalist for the Canadian Home Builders’ Associations Community Development Award for their efforts to help continue the revitalization of the town. “Crystal Beach is a hidden gem that people are just starting to discover,” says Dan Gabriele, President of Marz Homes, a local home builder working to revitalize some of the old amusement park lands. “It feels like being at a cottage up north but with a less stressful drive. Plus, the area’s got something for everybody: a beautiful beach, bike rides along the waterfront, and historic sites to visit.” With young families as well as retirees in mind, Marz Homes designed a coastal-inspired community called South Coast Village, just steps from the shores of Lake Erie that includes a clubhouse, tennis courts and swimming pools, with additional access to a private beach. The cottage-style homes that Marz is offering are available in a range of sizes, some of which include a double-car garage or a large front porch, with prices starting in the mid $300,000’s, and a new release coming this spring. It is definitely worth the trip to Crystal Beach this summer. Be sure to stop in at the Marz Homes’ Model Home. n

SILVERGATE HOMES Luxury bungalows at Victoria Woods in Niagara Falls

S

ilvergate Homes has created quite the “buzz” in Niagara for its new collection of luxury townhomes in Niagara Falls. Far away from the hub of tourism but close enough to all amenities and recreational opportunities, Victoria Woods offers a lifestyle of luxury and leisure within minutes of the roar of the mighty Niagara. New home owners can enjoy the splendour of a bungalow home with all the comforts and conveniences of a low-maintenance lifestyle where green space embraces two sides of this community. Each block of homes bears its own signature of originality with facades of varying exteriors and finishes, a distinctive hallmark of a Silvergate community. Shrubbery, trees, landscaping, plus an irrigation system, complement the driveways and walkways of interlocking stone. An exceptional feature is that all homes come complete with a 10x20-foot rear covered deck, allowing for three seasons of outdoor living. With many of the homes backing directly onto greenspace, homeowners can enjoy the natural surroundings and its serenity. Luxury standards include a family-sized breakfast bar, pantry, main-floor laundry, four-piece ensuite with glass shower, walk-in-closets, central air and a two-car garage, essential for the retiree or power couple on the move. LORA BAY Live life to the fullest

I

deally situated in the charming town of Thornbury, within minutes of some of the finest leisure activities in Ontario, the highly anticipated Phase 2A of the Cottage Collection was recently released at Lora Bay. Reid’s Heritage Homes has created a vacationinspired community that has been attracting a wide range of buyers who are looking for an all-inclusive lifestyle. The award-winning Tom Lehman/Thomas McBroom-designed, 18-hole championship golf course surrounds Lora Bay, and is nestled in the Blue Mountains overlooking Georgian Bay. At the Golf Club at Lora Bay, the surrounding landscape and forested shoreline influenced the dramatic course design, and every green, hole and bunker was sculpted to inspire golfers of all levels—both technically and visually. Resort-style amenities at Lora Bay include a private beach club and a 10,000-square-foot recreation centre. Within the neighbourhood itself, designated community trails can be enjoyed all year long, and are linked to the Georgian Trail, which extends from Collingwood to Meaford. Come winter, the cart path in the golf course is maintained and groomed for snowshoeing and skiing. The convenient proximity of these built-in amenities is evident, but also close at hand are opportunities for skiing, boating, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and much more, located just off the shores of Georgian Bay, at Blue Mountain, as well as in Collingwood and the surrounding area. A sense of belonging prevails in the master-planned community of Lora Bay, but it’s clear that new home purchasers in this distinctive neighbourhood have

UPPER VISTA CONDOS An ideal time to buy in Niagara Region

T

he Niagara Region is one of the places to watch over the next several years as the population of the Greater Golden Horseshoe continues to grow. As demographic changes in the Toronto GTA create new housing needs, this favours future development in the Niagara Region. Strategically, all the ingredients to enable future growth are there: land, infrastructure, employment, proximity to Toronto GTA, and growing market demand. Moreover, there is political vision, with over $1 billion in public and private sector investment already committed over the next decade. The results of these commitments will include: direct GO Transit rail service from Niagara Falls to Toronto; new state-of-the-art Niagara Regional Hospital; expanding post-secondary institutions (Brock University, McMaster University, Mohawk College); and new entertainment and business facilities (new casino, convention centre, hotels). As a destination, the Niagara Region is arguably among the most exciting places to visit in Ontario, offering the widest variety of activities, attractions and adventures, both indoors and outdoors. For all ages and generations, available year-round, rain or shine: over 88 wineries to explore and over 80 golf courses to play; hundreds of acres of parks, nature trails, bike paths and beaches; year-round festivals and attractions in Niagara Falls; world-class casinos, nightlife and entertainment; and shopping and dining for every need and lifestyle. This is why Evertrust Development Group Canada chose Niagara Falls for its unique condominium resort concept that will give empty nesters and busy professionals an opportunity to enjoy the Niagara lifestyle, whether as a downsizing home-base for

A BOATER’S PARADISE Gananoque’s luxury dockside residences

T

he small Ontario town of Gananoque on the St. Lawrence River is an intriguing blend of vibrancy and peacefulness, history and modernity, progress and tradition. Reflecting all these qualities is the town’s new luxury dockside residences, Stone & South. Nestled on the shoreline overlooking the St. Lawrence, 90 percent of the two six-storey buildings has views of the water. And with a private marina for the exclusive use of homeowners and their guests, Stone & South is a rare opportunity to own a boat slip right at your doorstep. Although it feels a thousand miles away from city life, Stone & South is ideally situated two to three hours from Toronto, New York, Montreal and Ottawa, by boat, train, car or float plane. Anita Blommestyn, vice president of the company behind the residences, family-owned CaraCo Development Corp., says Stone & South offers “city convenience at a cottage pace.” And with lock-and-leave convenience and secure underground parking and storage, residents can enjoy a cottage lifestyle without the prep, closing and maintenance. Other exclusive amenities include a private, gated and landscaped outdoor barbecue area; off-leash dog park; social room with kitchen; fitness centre; grand lobby; and a bicycle room. The 125 spacious residences are thoughtfully planned by local designers Reid & Siemonsen in an urban rustic style. The interiors also feature a nod to the nautical history of the area. In fact, in Gananoque, it’s all about the

river and the Thousand Islands. Locals and tourists alike enjoy all kinds of activities on the water, from power boating and sailing to canoeing, kayaking and jet skiing. Also popular is touring the islands via the Gananoque Boat Line. Or homeowners can enjoy a view of the goings-on from the oversized balconies and terraces. In town, there’s so much to enjoy, including dining on Italian fare at Riva restaurant, choosing a chic new look at fashion boutique Steel Style Garage, seeing a performance at the Playhouse Theatre, browsing for fresh local ingredients at the farmers’ market, sipping a cold beer at the Gananoque Brewery, antiquing and exploring the museums along the waterfront. Shannon Treanor, local resident and owner of popular Gananoque coffee shop and restaurant The Socialist Pig, talks about the area’s captivating qualities. “I wish everybody knew there was this chance for a beautiful life here,” she says. “There are generations of testimony. This is a place that families have been returning to for hundreds of years.” n Dré Dee has contributed the Stone & South editorial on behalf of CaraCo.

SIXTY IS THE NEW FORTY Enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle

S

ixty is the new forty according to scientists who say longer, healthier lives mean people now hit middle-age later. Nowadays, retirees are enjoying active lifestyles and staying healthier, longer. Need an easy way to stay active? Many retirees are flocking to a land-lease style of community living where owning a home in the right community is the perfect solution for active retirees who no longer want to be tied down by a mortgage and demanding and costly property maintenance. Retirement lifestyle communities offer a variety of activities from low-impact aqua fitness to indoor swimming pools, well-maintained walking and biking paths, exercise rooms, tennis courts, golf, and much more. Being active isn’t just about exercise. It also means getting together with like-minded friends to play cards, have a barbecue or enjoy group gatherings such as dinners, dances and impromptu get-togethers. Don and Trudy Koopmans of Sandycove Acres, a Parkbridge Lifestyle Community, enjoy their active and healthy lifestyle. Don is the president of the garden club as well as director of the woodworking club within their community. “I love my active lifestyle at Sandycove Acres. On top of gardening and woodworking I also enjoy playing pool and snooker. I love being involved in a wealth of activities,” says Don. “I believe a place like Sandycove Acres is a perfect place where a retiree can stay active and live longer. I especially enjoy the social aspect of always being able to be involved with people. We’ve got great neighbours and

78

ACTIVE LIFE

have been able to make lifelong friends.” In the Parkbridge Lifestyle Community model of home ownership, communities are located near other great amenities which complement an active lifestyle. Within a short walk or drive there are many activities, including golfing, shopping, cafes, restaurants, beaches, wineries, and more. Many communities are situated in soughtafter destinations just waiting to be explored. Retirees have done the hard work and deserve to truly enjoy an active retirement with ample energy and good health. Instead of spending time on tedious home maintenance, shoveling snow or mowing the lawn, management at the land-lease style of home ownership takes care of these time-consuming tasks, giving back retirees their time to enjoy what really matters. At Parkbridge, you’re not just buying a house. You’re buying a home. A home in a community that opens its arms and its doors to your next big stage in life. A place where the word “neighbourly” isn’t taken lightly, and where friends become your social family. It’s all the great things about affordable homeownership, without the maintenance, or debt, so you can live life to the fullest for less. It takes a community to call a place home. New homes start in the $170,000s. n

LOYALIST COUNTRY CLUB Lifestyle of small-town charm, arts and culture

C

lose to the small-town charm of Bath, Kingston’s history and culture, and Lake Ontario beaches and marinas, Loyalist Country Club is a signature golf course development with scenic fairways bordering residents’ backyards. And every new home includes a free membership (a $10,000 value) to the elegant 20,000-square-foot Loyalist Clubhouse. The vast majority of owners purchase a home here because of the tremendous lifestyle that awaits when they’re not golfing. The social hub of the community, the Clubhouse, offers large locker rooms, club storage and a fully stocked pro shop, in addition to an exercise room, meeting rooms, large ballroom, billiards room, cards room, snack bar, an outdoor heated swimming pool and hot tub. It also has an excellent restaurant that offers both formal and casual dining, with a large verandah and a licensed lounge and outdoor patio offering a panoramic elevated view of the 18th green. Additionally, much of the appeal of Loyalist comes from its waterfront setting on Lake Ontario, a short stroll away from boating, fishing and watersports. The surrounding Bay of Quinte region has been called Canada’s “best kept secret” and for good reason. The area is a natural wonder, combining the beauty of the Lake Ontario shore with rolling terrain with towering trees, ponds and creeks scattered throughout. There are marinas, provincial parks and conservation areas, with hiking and biking trails, along with sensational bird watching opportunities. “This community attracts people who want to stay active and live in an area where there are plenty of cultural pursuits,” says Loyalist New Home Sales Advisor Linda McCormack. “Loyalist is a complete lifestyle

Summer Camp Teaches Kids Social Skills for Life This “True Canadian” experience has proven benefits to the development of youth and first generations Canadians are starting to take notice to an experience that is internationally renown. BY ANDREW MARTIN Camp Can-Aqua Andrew Martin, Camp Director

ach summer, thousands of kids from countries all over the world arrive at Pearson International Airport and will begin what is sure to be one of the most exciting adventures of their young lives. They have travelled across the globe in search of what is considered one of the most beneficial opportunities for young people today… they are coming to camp. The province of Ontario is known and respected worldwide for the quality and diversity of residential summer camp opportunities available to children. The benefits of outdoor education continue to have an incredible impact on the physical, mental, social and psychological development of a child. Parents are looking to camps to offer a unique, challenging and exciting experience for their children, one which is outdoors and ‘unplugged’ from an overwhelming electronic society. At Camp Can-Aqua, near Bancroft, Ontario, we are very proud and supportive of the diversity at our camp. Campers from Spain, Germany, Norway, China, Korea and Australia have joined us in the past few summers. Diversity strengthens our camp community and continues to be an active goal at our summer camp. We are living, learning and creating in an environment that is a reflection of our world. This Canadian Tradition is tried, tested and true. In recent years, the Ontario Camps Association has been working hard to educate new Canadian families of the benefits of this “Canadian Tradition”. Many children growing up in Ontario have never swam in a lake or cooked on an open fire. These young people are missing out on what could be one of the most influential developmental

experiences of their lives. Can-Aqua has been thrilled with the visible increase in the enrolment of first generation Canadians. At Can-Aqua we develop inclusive programs to ensure that all children have the opportunity to challenge themselves physically, creatively and intellectually everyday. We work to push our campers out of their comfort zones, to take safe risks and to challenge themselves to try new things. We teach compromise and cooperation, while underlining the importance of self-expression. When thinking about offering opportunities to our children, we often look to travel outside of Canada, not realizing that for those who reside in the province of Ontario, some of the very best options are available close to home. Within the Ontario Camps Association are some of the best camps in the world and Can-Aqua is proud to be a recognized member. Summer camp is one of the most important experiences you can offer your child. Without a doubt, it is one “Canadian Tradition” every child should take part in. Andrew Martin is the Owner/Director of Camp Can-Aqua, a summer residential camp near Bancroft, Ontario that welcomes up to 150 kids each session.

[VEGETARIAN REFRESH]

Going Wild!

with blueberries this summer

E

Recipe photo courtesy Wild Blueberry Association of North America; inset photo, bigstockphoto.com

veryone knows how delicious fresh blueberries taste. Many of us have spent countless hours picking the little darlings only to find our baskets not quite as full as our bellies. In addition to the abundance of antioxidants found in wild blueberries, they’re low in fat, high in fibre, only 80 calories per cup, and an excellent source of manganese, which is vital to bone development. Now, recent research suggests that wild blueberries may help fight Alzheimer’s Disease because of the benefit to cognitive function and memory. Here’s a quick and easy way to add wild blueberries to your menu, all year long.

Vegetable Couscous with Wild Blueberries Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 13 minutes INGREDIENTS:

1 cup (250 mL) vegetable stock 3 tbsp (45 mL) olive oil 1 cup (250 mL) couscous 1 tsp (5 mL) grated lemon rind Pinch ground cumin 2 carrots, diced 1 small zucchini, diced 1/4 cup (50 mL) walnut halves, chopped 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) frozen wild blueberries 1/2 cup (125 mL) cooked (canned) chickpeas Salt and pepper 4 sprigs each fresh coriander and flat leaf parsley, chopped

PREPARATION:

In small saucepan, bring vegetable stock and 2 tbsp (25 mL) of the oil to boil. Add couscous, lemon rind and cumin; stir to combine. Remove from heat and cover; let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff with fork and scrape into large bowl. Meanwhile, heat remaining oil in skillet over medium heat and cook carrots for 5 minutes or until softened. Add zucchini and cook for 3 minutes or until softened. Remove from heat and add walnuts. Add to couscous. Add wild blueberries and chickpeas to bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add coriander and parsley and stir to combine well. Serves 4 Tip: Cover and store in refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Recipe used in association with and credited to the Wild Blueberry Association of North America. The WBANA is an international trade association of growers and processors of wild blueberries from Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Maine.
