best encapsulate the ringing in of 2017. It seems like just yesterday that we were all frantic about whether the numerical change of the year 2000 would affect the technological world. As we watched Australia and other countries celebrate ahead of us, it was clear that the media hype and fear mongering was just that – an extravagant publicity promotion.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, and at HOMES Publishing Group we hope that you’re not, it would have been difficult to ignore the political nonsense south of the border. Admittedly, I was hoping that the rest of the world could take a collective sigh of relief on November 9th, but, alas, that prediction didn’t come to fruition. What this means for the next four years, is anyone’s guess.

I’m sure that every generation says that the world is going faster and faster, and that it’s hard to keep up. I often wonder what my grandmothers would say if they saw everyone walking around with headphones in their ears, apparently talking to themselves rather than to the person walking beside them. Things that we could never have imagined have now materialized, and things that we thought would stay the same – don’t.

Maybe it’s just in my immediate circle, but over the past year there seemed to be a disproportionate amount of long-term relationships that came to an end – friends and colleagues. In some cases there was a mutual realization that they no longer had much in common, and choices were made. As Gwyneth Paltrow would call it – a conscious uncoupling.

When something like this happens, more choices need to be made about relocating and starting anew.

Then there are those who are looking to scale down, or perhaps build that long-awaited dream home. Jane Lockhart talks about rightsizing your home so that it fits with where you’re at in your life.

Jayne Hobbs, our fabulous Body & Soul editor, considered retiring this year – and as she enters the second half of her 60’s, she’s earned that right. However, her contributions and connections are an integral part of Active Life magazine, and I’m pleased to report that we’ve retained Jayne on a flexible basis so that it fits in with her volunteer work. Her positive attitude and a commitment to living a life well-lived is a benefit to us all.

adly, there have been many days when the overpasses from Toronto to Trenton were lined with Canadian citizens paying tribute to one of our fallen soldiers as they made their last trip along the Highway of Heroes - a 170-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 that was officially named by the Ministry of Transportation on August 24, 2007.

Prior to the Afghanistan conflict, Canadian soldiers who fell in conflict zones were buried in the countries in which they fell. Once repatriation began, the fallen Canadians were flown back to Canada to CFB Trenton. From the base, their bodies were then transported along the 170 kilometres to the coroners office in Toronto where a death certificate was issued so that each fallen armed forces member could be returned to their hometown.

In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, The Highway of Heroes Living Tribute was created as a living, breathing memorial for all of the Canadians who have fallen since Confederation.

In total, 117,000 trees will be planted.

“The Living Tribute reminds those who travel along the highway of the great debt we owe these courageous Canadians,” says Mark Cullen, Board Chair of The Highway of Heroes Living Tribute.

“With thousands of trees planted on the highway so far, this initiative will also provide a myriad of environmental benefits for generations to come.”

This is a long-term campaign that is expected to take five years to complete. In consultation with the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, the

t’s imperative that you use software to protect your computer against viruses, spyware, malware, trojans and other threats. Unlike the human body, where vaccines or treatments can take effect while you’re asleep or awake, some computer nasties can’t be detected or eradicated if an infection is active, or while the computer is running. It’s interesting to note that FixMeStick gained notoriety when Marty Algire appeared on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, along with co-founder Corey Velan, approximately three years ago. The duo asked for $500K for 20 per cent. Arlene Dickinson and David Chilton bought in on the final deal. Once the dust settled after the show’s taping, a third Dragon, Bruce Coxon, also came on board.

According to Algire, the deal evolved.

The equity portion remained the same at 20 per cent, but they added a separate strategic partnership plus a royalty deal.

CANADIAN THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS REALIZE THEIR DREAM

ernard and Karen McCormack, both 58, are the breeders of Sir Dudley Digges who was the winner of the 2016 Queen’s Plate – the oldest, continuously run stakes race in North America.

“Last year actualized one of those goals that you very much want to attain in horse racing – winning the Queen’s Plate,” says Bernard.

Bernard, who immigrated from Ireland in 1981, comes from three generations of horse people. His grandfather raced and bred horses in Ireland, choosing the orange and black racing silks. The McCormack colours date back to 1923, and the couple still use them today for their business.“My dad raced in those colours,” says Bernard. “The logo, three horses, is an old Celtic insignia – the circle of life.”

A love of horses was instilled in Bernard by his father, who was a racing journalist for the Associated Press, and for the Irish Independent. By the time Bernard turned 18, he owned his first car and his first brood mare.

Karen says she was born horse mad. Her parents, Irish immigrants as well, moved to a farm in Caledon from Brampton when she was 12 years old. Three months later, she received the gift of lifetime – a small chestnut mare. “She gave me insight into horse behaviour that I was not able to learn in riding lessons,” says Karen.

The couple met in 1985. Bernard had immigrated to Canada four years earlier and was woking as an assistant to the General Manager of E.P. Taylor’s Windfields Farm in Oshawa. Karen had joined the Equine Insurance ACTIVE LIFE

Group, and continues to work for them on a parttime basis to this day. Married in 1987, their daughter Clare was born in 1988 and their son, Connor, two years later. “We were one of 20 families that lived and worked at Windfields Farm,” says Karen. “A bit like Camelot – a magical place to raise our children.”

In 2004, Karen and Bernard purchased their own farm just outside of Port Perry, Ontario where they could raise and breed their own horses. “The year we turned 45, instead of slowing down,” says Karen. “We bought Mapleshade Farm.”

Rose, a Clydesdale mare, was sought out to be a wet nurse for this orphaned filly. They quickly became inseparable.

When Windfields closed in 2008, the McCormack’s decided to focus on their own business in earnest – Cara Bloodstock. Cara is the Gaelic word for friend, and in this vein they represent their clients at equine auctions.

While walking their property, the couple came upon a weathered headstone engraved with the name, Eliza Jane Shaw, 1849, five years and one month old.

The discovery had a profound effect on both of them.

One of the farm’s paddocks is called Eliza Jane, and this past year a new filly was named in her honour.

The McCormack’s consider each, and every, horse a part of their family – especially Karen. “We love to watch the mares and foals milling around on a summer evening. We do Walt Disney voice-overs about the conversations we imagine the horses are having with each other,” says Karen with a laugh.

“The horses have definite personalities.”

Bernard is often away at sales for extended periods of time, which means that Karen carries the full workload. “I do feel a sense of accomplishment that we are still here and still doing all of this, although the physicality has changed for me,” says Karen. “I have become more aware of the requirement for strength.”

Last year they lost a mare after foaling, and Karen had to find a nurse mare (like a wet nurse) for the orphaned filly. Rose, a Clydesdale mare, was ready to wean her own colt. Rose lived with them for the summer and raised their thoroughbred filly as

As they approach their 60’s, the McCormack’s have adapted their operation with the inclusion of such things as as a hay elevator. With ever-changing technology, they can now monitor the mares on cameras to see where they are at in the foaling process, and to keep an eye on them after the birth – which is a crucial few days. Nine mares are expecting in 2017. “To horse people, weekends don’t mean what they mean to other people,” says Bernard.

“Sometimes I sit on the GO train on my way to Bay and King,” says Karen. “And I wonder if there is anyone else on the train who was up foaling a mare overnight, or bandaging a leg before leaving home.”

Both Karen and Bernard continue to ride, and they made sure that both their children could ride. They’ve owned race horses on and off since the year 2000, and sell their foals at auctions in Lexington and Toronto.

“It’s always a thrill to see one of our babies racing in the silks of their new owners,” says Karen.

“ The horses have definite

personalities – a flick of an ear, the shake of a head – we can tell by their outline which horse it is, even in the dark.”

Currently Karen and Bernard have part ownership in three race horses, including Eliza Jane who’s the filly in the cover photo.

“I have enjoyed every decade and every stage,” says Karen. “We are fortunate in that our experience, and our life path, has led us to this place where we can work, live and play – all connected to horses. And, we are fortunate that we have our health, which is a huge thing. I used to say that I was looking for a retirement exit strategy while Bernard was still trying to breed the Queen’s Plate winner. I don’t know what I can say now that that goal has been accomplished.”

Get your 2017 finances on track

T

he holidays can be expensive with festive hosting, gift giving and travel – and the temptation to over spend can make sticking to a budget very difficult. According to Statista.com, the average Canadian spent $1,164 on holiday gifts alone.

If you’re anxious about your holiday bills and wondering how you’re going to pay them off, these helpful tips can get you back on track for 2017.

Calculate your debt

Make a date to be debt free

It’s always advisable to have a goal.

Set a date to pay it off by. Perhaps you can deal with the holiday damage within 90 days. Take that amount and divide it by 12 weeks. That will give you the actual amount that you have to pay each week in order to pay it off in three months. If the weekly amount is too hefty, you may need more time, but the point is make a plan to get debt free and choose a reasonable timeline in order to make that happen.

Tackling the debt

Once you’ve come up with a reasonable time frame, start by paying the debt that has the highest interest, first. Continue to make minimum

Once the highest debt is paid off, move to the next highest, and keep up the payment levels in order to get your debt paid off faster. Remember, the longer you wait, the more interest you will pay.

Return it

If you received gifts that you have no intention of using, return them for cash or a gift card rather than hanging on to them. Otherwise you’re letting the value of that gift waste away in the corner of your closet.

Take back unwanted items for cash and use it to pay down your debt. If you’re issued a store card, I recommend saving it for the 2017 holidays. For gifts that can’t be returned, exchange them for items that you’ll

actually use. For those that can’t be returned or exchanged, try selling them them on a buy-and-sell site.

Prepare for next year

The damage has been done for 2016, but it doesn’t mean that you have to repeat patterns. Plan now for the 2017 holiday season. I recommend taking a photocopy of your current credit card bill(s) and storing them away when you pack up your holiday decorations. This will serve as a visual reminder to stay away from spending too much next Christmas.

Add up how much you spent this year and divide that by six months.

As soon as your debt is paid off, start putting money away. In six months you should have all the money you’ll need for the coming holiday season.

ocated just 90 minutes northeast of Toronto, Peterborough retains its downhome charm, while offering an expanse of unspoiled opportunities that stretch throughout the Kawarthas.

The Otonabee River meanders through the city of Peterborough, capturing scenic views and beautiful parks along its banks. Known as the Carden Plain, very little soil covers the limestone bedrock. In a survey by Neilson.com, twothirds of the 4,000 50- to 69-year-olds who were interviewed had no plans of moving. They preferred to age in place in surroundings that were familiar to them. A high percentage of the remaining one third planned to move, but wanted to stay within a 45-kilometre radius from their current location, and be closer to family.

It’s interesting to note that 46 per cent of this age bracket planned to move to a home of the same size, or

larger, which included the high-end features and finishes that they always desired. The other 54 per cent were planning to move to a smaller residence so that they could age in place, and have access to community services and amenities. While they weren’t necessarily ready to retire, they were planning ahead by purchasing a condo or home with single-level living.

To me, rightsizing is about improving and upgrading your home by renovating or modifying it. It can be as simple as repurposing an existing space into a more functional space. Rooms don’t have to be designated for one purpose only. active-life.ca

transformation island. The modern pendent light over the island added an unexpected design element that injected texture and whimsy to the space.

The cabinetry was extended beyond the kitchen to create an archway of much-needed storage leading to the sunny breakfast room.

With 15-foot cathedral ceilings, this gorgeous space is augmented with a built-in banquette and breakfast table.

The open-concept layout unified the kitchen and family room. A wraparound, communal desk was customdesigned along the back of the large sectional sofa to create a cohesive, multi-functional use of space. The positioning of the original corner fireplace was maintained, and the furniture was positioned to balance both the placement of the television and the fireplace.

A single wall colour maintained the integrity of the wall panelling and trim throughout. Wide, plank hardwood flooring, in a natural

walnut colour, unified the overall look and feel.

The 375-square-foot living room was very long and required specific attention. Moulding was applied to the walls for a more-formal, traditional ambiance. Strategic positioning of the furniture created several conversation areas – ideal for entertaining. One side of the room focused on the fireplace, and another banquette in the bay window provided additional seating. The open bench married the two areas for a calculated use of space.

Again, a fresh palette of fabrics and finishes met the clients’ request for a classic design that stood the test of time, and provided the perfect backdrop for the Gregory Hardy painting that hangs above the sofa. n

3,500-square-foot, centuryold home in Toronto lacked architectural interest and functionality on the inside. With some creative space planning, along with a strategic selection of colours, textures and materials, the main floor of this home received a major overhaul.

The most dramatic change to the floorplan included opening up the kitchen to the family room. This required the addition of a supporting beam, which was hidden in the ceiling to avoid a visible bulkhead so that the rooms flowed together without visual interruption.

Pruning 101

The trees around our homes will soon reveal the harsh realities of winter. All we need is a good, old-fashioned, mid-winter thaw, and then we can experience the healing effects of pruning.

TOOLS Hand pruners | Used for light work, hand pruners are ideal for shaping existing tree branches. Reach into young, woody limbs to remove oneto three-year-old growth that has either been broken, or bent over from the weight of snow and ice.

Pruning saw | Forget the cross-cut and the rip saw in the basement, a pruning saw is designed for the unique purpose of cutting through green, living wood – up to approximately 10 centimetres (four inches) in diameter. It has teeth that are arranged alternately so that you get a ‘purchase’ on the wood on the fore strokes, and on the backstrokes.

If you have an old saw, sharpen it, replace the blade or buy a new one.

It’s no secret, but you’re only as good as your tools, and a sharp saw will get the most effective cut, with the least amount of effort.

Loppers | Both anvil and by-pass type loppers can be very effective at cutting green wood up to eight centimetres (three inches) in diameter. Generally, these tools require less effort and work more quickly than a pruning saw, but if you cut a branch that is too big, the cutting blades will twist.

Pole Pruner | A good quality pole pruner can pay for itself many times over if you know how to use it.

However, there are a few caveats.

First, the pruning saw on the end of the pole pruner has limitations. Do not attempt to cut a tree limb that is more than 10 centimetres (four inches) in diameter. Also, fatigue is a factor. The leverage of a seven-metre pole pruner, extended to its maximum length, can be awkward to maneuver.

Practice on lower limbs first, and then work your way up to the most lofty specimens. Safety is paramount

WHAT TO CUT Branches that are broken will need to be removed. Ideally, you should cut minor branches back to where they meet a major branch or the main trunk of the tree. Make a cut about one third through the bottom of the branch first and then cut it through from the top. By doing so you avoid stripping bark off the trunk under the weight of a falling branch.

You can prune most evergreens, late flowering shrubs and trees while they are dormant, but maples and birch perform best when pruned while in full leaf, so leave them until late spring.

If you have doubts with regard to your ability, seek experienced assistance or call in an arborist.

- you don’t want a tree limb to fall on your head. Wear a safety helmet and safety glasses. Take small sections of the limb off at a time, starting with those that are the greatest distance from the main trunk of the tree.

Do not stand on a ladder with the pole pruner extended. Work with a buddy who can assist and guide you to branches that may not be visible from your vantage point.

Avocado Bravado High in healthy fats, the avocado tree is native to south/central Mexico. Avocado also refers to the tree’s fruit, which is, botanically, a large berry containing a single seed. ▲

Avocado, Roasted Squash and Black Bean Tacos (SERVES 4)

• Preheat oven to 425°F. Peel squash and cut it in two. Remove seeds and stringy fibres, and dice squash.

• Arrange squash pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil, add salt and pepper, and sprinkle with sumac or paprika. Roast for 25 minutes.

• In a small saucepan, sauté ½ tbsp olive oil and minced garlic over low to medium heat. Add black beans, ground cumin, chili powder, salt and ¼ cup of water.

Bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for approximately 5 minutes or until the beans are well heated and soft (but not dry).

• In a hot pan, heat tortillas for a few minutes, or microwave them for 20 seconds. Cover with a clean cloth to prevent them from drying out.

• Top the tortillas with roasted squash, black beans, avocado and feta. Serve with fresh cilantro, hot sauce and lime quarters.

Roasted Cauliflower with Avocado Sauce

1 butternut squash, approx. 1.3 kg/2.9 lb 2 tbsp olive oil ¼ tsp salt Fresh ground pepper 2 tsp sumac (or paprika) ½ tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, finely minced 1 can (540 ml) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp chili powder Salt 8 to 10 corn tortillas 1 avocado from Mexico, diced ½ cup feta cheese, crumbled Fresh cilantro, hot sauce and lime quarters, to serve

1 large cauliflower, cut into florets 2 tbsp olive oil ¼ tsp salt Fresh ground pepper ½ tsp crushed hot pepper flakes 1 garlic clove 1 small ripe avocado from Mexico 1 roasted garlic clove (see above) ¼ cup plain yogurt ½ cup parsley leaves ½ tsp ground cumin 3 tbsp olive oil Juice from ½ lemon (or from 1 lime) ½ tsp salt Fresh ground pepper

• Preheat oven to 425°F. • Arrange cauliflower florets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil, add salt and pepper, and sprinkle with hot pepper flakes. Roast for 20 minutes, remove from oven and add garlic clove to roast it until it melts. Return to oven for 10 minutes or until cauliflower is tender and begins to grill. Set garlic clove aside to use in sauce.

• Place avocado in a bowl. Press garlic clove, remove flesh and add to bowl. Add ingredients. Using an electric or hand mixer, reduce mixture to a smooth sauce.

Adjust consistency as needed by adding water or more lemon juice.
