Katie Gebhardt From an early age Katie Gebhardt knew design was in her blood. After attending the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, she received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and then launched into her interior design career in 2012. In 2016, she struck out on her own and is now the Principal Interior Designer and Founder of Solstice Interiors in her hometown of San Diego. A self-proclaimed “Cali lady through and through,” Katie works on both commercial and residential design, and particularly enjoys getting to make each home and space unique to every client and family. “My favorite kind of projects are the ones with clients who allow me to really show my style and flex my creative muscles, and trust in the process,” she said. When asked what her design aesthetic is, Katie sites “Cali-cool meets mid-century modern with minimal and Scandinavian influences.” She works with a variety of budgets ranging anywhere from $10,000 to $300,000 for some of her commercial projects.
Q&A WITH KATIE What trends do you see popping up in San Diego homes this year? I think we’re going to see some darker, moodier hues moving into kitchens and baths. This trend has been around, but I think we’ll start to see it specifically in kitchens as people move away from the white-shaker cabinets we see so often. How can homeowners incorporate specific design trends without their spaces quickly becoming dated? I would recommend staying neutral on your bigger, core pieces (sofa, dining chairs, window treatments, even paint color) and incorporating trends with smaller, less permanent items like rugs, pillows, etc. Create an overall neutral space that allows you to swap out the trendy elements. If you’re looking to incorporate a trend with remodeling, ask yourself: Will I get over looking at this in a year? Two years? Is this easy to change out if I do feel it becomes dated?

Q&A WITH HOPE You’re also a LEED-certified designer. What are some sustainable design solutions that you implement in your work and how can homeowners work to incorporate those into their own homes? Luckily, here in California, we have more stringent codes and laws in place that require the use of more eco-friendly products. It’s always fantastic to work with clients that are more conscious of our environment and want to do more. Your floors and walls pretty much cover the majority of the interior of a home, so suggesting flooring that is FSCcertified (Forest Stewardship Council)
and using sealants and paints that are low VOC (volatile organic compounds) are a couple ways to start the process of right. You have helped clients with the design of downtown condos to large beachfront properties. Whether a small or a large space, what are some design elements that people can integrate into their home that will make a big statement? Beautifully designed and thought-out entryways are a fantastic way to set the stage for a home. Interesting lighting and artwork and some fun paint or wallcoverings in a powder room never hurt!
Whether tackling a remodel of a 350-square-foot houseboat or adding a little island warmth to high-rise condos, interior designer Hope Pinc loves every little detail of her job. Having grown up on the Big Island of Hawaii, Hope moved to San Diego to dive head-first into her career, which started with earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from The Design Institute of San Diego in 2006. After working for various designers and architects around San Diego, she branched out on her own and launched Hope Pinc Design in 2014. “Owning my own business has been a whirlwind and exhilarating experience,” she said. “Definitely my best to decision to date.” Hope loves pushing herself outside of her comfort zone in the projects she takes on, saying her aesthetic changes with each in order to create an overall harmonious interior. “I love building relationships with people,” she said. “It’s so wonderful to get to know my clients better and see their homes and businesses transform into more functional and usable spaces.” When taking on new clients, jobs can range from $5,000 for smaller furnishing projects and go up to about $500,000 for full home remodels.

lessed with an eye for art from his mother and skilled hands from his Italian father, Kristopher Kirkpatrick creates one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces from “The Barn” on a 21-acre plot of land in North County. After apprenticing in the Bay Area with Berkeley furniture maker Jim Parodi, in 1997 Kirkpatrick decided to forge his own path (and seek out better weather) in San Diego. Since setting up his own shop in Valley Center, Kirkpatrick has focused mostly on “live edge” and resin pieces, crafting each from solid pieces of wood that are hand cut from naturally felled logs. Kirkpatrick’s most notable inspiration: the ocean. Having grown up in Italy through third grade and returning to spend his summers, he would take time to explore the Mediterranean Sea. His love for the ocean grew when he sailed down the coast to San Diego (proposing to his now wife during the journey), and that inspiration from the varied colors of the sea can be seen in the resin he began using in 2016. Late that year he found a log that had been submerged under water for some 500 years. “In an effort to honor the log’s underwater history and bring my childhood back to life I created my first Blue Water Resin Table,” Kirkpatrick said about a table he created by bringing two slabs of wood together with epoxy resin. “My use of resin, instead of glass, allows the creation of ‘movement’ in the water. The work itself is quite stable, interactive, and the applications are limitless.” Each piece that Kirkpatrick creates is made by hand, sourced from naturally felled logs and custom tailored to each client’s individual needs. “What brings me the greatest satisfaction is bringing a client’s vision to life and exceeding their expectations.”

Interior designer Susan Wintersteen has been in the business for nearly 17 years. Located in Torrey Highlands, her company, Savvy Interiors, focuses primarily on home remodels of kitchens and bathrooms. “Both areas are so personal to the families that use them, and I try to make each of those spaces unique,” Susan said. TUSCAN REBOOT “This homeowner was moving into a new Santa Luz home (near Black Mountain Ranch in North County) and I wanted to incorporate the architecture in a more modern feel than the Tuscan roots it was built from,” Susan said. “In lieu of a white quartz that might look out of place, we chose a honed matte finish quartz in a warm gray/beige color. This worked with the new shaker cabinet doors and CLEAF accents. The hood was paneled in a moisture resistant CLEAF material that allows us to customize how we use the product. I wanted to use a modern graphic tile, but did not want to use it in the whole kitchen — too much of a good thing can give you a tummy ache. So, we chose to use it behind the cooktop only. We added wood elements of the CLEAF in open shelving by the sink and inset cabinet doors.” ELEMENTS

Despite growing up in the home of a hoarder, Melisa Celikel has been organized since childhood — a skill she eventually turned into a full-time career. The goal of Melisa’s company, Let’s Get You Organized! (part of Make SHT Happen LLC), is to help people who are unable to declutter and get organized on their own. “It has been amazing to be able to monetize my natural gifts and talents and create a woman-owned small business here in San Diego,” she said. Since launching her full-time organizing career at the end of 2017, the self-described minimalist now employs
two others on her team, a Virtual Assistant and a Clutter Clearing Assistant. The Let’s Get Organized! team operates on three core values: respect, collaboration and active listening, which all “help clients develop positive habits, take action and make realistic choices in implementing their home organization systems.” Melisa offers clients from Tijuana to Temecula and everywhere in between a variety of services, including in-home Clutter Clearing services, and she also offers her Clutter Coaching to people all around the world. And the No. 1 area where clients need help with organization? “Paper clutter seems to be the bane of everyone’s existence.” But the giant “junk drawer” people call their garage is a close second, Melisa said.

LINEN CLOSET According to Melisa, “For a clutter-free linen closet or utility closet, I recommend sorting like with like then placing each category into clear bins with a label for each. Towels won't look messy when they're grouped into neutral tones and folded the same way. I recommend removing packaging from toilet paper and paper towels to clear the visual clutter and create a tidier space. I love baskets for storing cleaning and first aid items which can tend to look cluttered. Getting organized doesn't have to be expensive. PANTRY According to Melisa, “The key to an organized pantry is to sort like with like, utilize vertical space and keep everything neatly front-faced. Plastic risers allow for ‘double stack’ storage in utilizing vertical space. Risers that are specifically sized for spices allow each spice to be neatly displayed for easy access. Clear glass jars provide air-tight options to store grains and other bulk items in an aesthetically pleasing way. Baskets are a great storage solution for baking goods and other larger items such as pancake or wale mixes, sugar or flour. I recommend a quarterly purge of expired items to keep everything in tip-top shape!” WHAT YOU’LL NEED

LIVABLY MODERN Little Italy’s D3 Home showcases furniture and home goods that are durable, sustainable and anything but boring By LESLIE HACKETT
David Alan Diehl and Michael Chavez moved to San Diego two years ago from Atlanta seeking a slower pace of life. After the move, Diehl, whose background is in interior design, was having diiculties inding furniture at area stores that wasn’t lowend or super high-end. So, last year, he and his husband, Chavez, decided it was time to open their own shop. After looking all around the city for a location to house their store, Little Italy, with its up-and-coming new builds, trendy restaurants and available large retail spaces,

became the place where they would establish D3 Home in March 2018. The store is located in the block just north of chef Richard Blais’ famed Crack Shack in a multi-use building on Kettner Boulevard in an area that’s known as NOLI (North Little Italy) and sometimes referred to as the Little Italy Design District. The building in the 2400 block of Kettner Boulevard also houses AT HOM Store & Design, Meyer Fine Art Inc. and Klassik, a high-end consignment store. When customers come in, Diehl often hears, “I never walk down here; I had no idea these stores were here.”
