Julia Named our ‘CAREGiver of The Year’ During the last edition of The Elder, we shared our five nominees for our CAREGiver of the Year for 2021. The nominees were chosen based upon feedback from clients and their family members, discussions among the office team and praise given by our team for their colleagues, using our online praise platform, praiseworthy.

It was incredibly difficult to decide upon just five people who we wanted

to put forward as our nominees for our ‘CAREGiver of The Year’, and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our team for their incredible hard work over the course of the last 12 months.

After much discussion, the five nominees were: Jane Foleher, Kristine Horrocks, Julia Cox, Janet Wynn and Catherine Rawlinson.

All five nominees we’re more than worthy winners of the overall title, but we decided upon one person who we felt over the past year has really gone that extra mile to bring a little joy to the lives of her clients. That person, was, Julia Cox! Julia started with Home Instead York in early 2021 after almost 35 years of working in the hospitality sector. From day one she made a huge impression with all her clients taking her fun filled personality along with her to each visit.

Julia has danced and sang her way through 2021, bringing plenty of smiles to the faces of clients she cares for.

Huge congratulations to Julia on being award our ‘CAREGiver of The Year’ title!

Companionship Café

Home Instead York are delighted to be once again teaming up with Dean’s Garden Centre to host a monthly Companionship Café.

The Companionship Café will be held on the second Monday of each month, with the first one taking place on Monday 11th April.

Come and enjoy some time socialising, doing fun activities and making new friends!

There is no cost involved, just the refreshments you would like to purchase.

Everyone who attends will be made to feel welcome, so come on your own or feel free to bring a CAREGiver or family member along!

Quiet Hour Some businesses have recognised the need for a “Quiet Hour”, to make shopping or banking a calmer, more comfortable experience for the elderly, or those with disabilities. Music is turned off, noise and lighting levels reduced, and staff are trained to be more attentive to the needs of their customers. You can find these quiet times at the following businesses: Asda – between 2pm and 3pm from Monday to Thursday.

HSBC Branches – between 2pm and 3pm on weekdays Morrisons – Saturdays from 9am to 10am and on Sundays from 10am to 11am.

Tesco – between 9am and 10am on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Dementia Take A Seat Campaign and the Herbert Protocol WE’R E

When a person goes missing, it can be very distressing for family, friends and can be even more worrying when the missing person has Dementia.

The Herbert Protocol is an initiative introduced

by West Yorkshire Police and other agencies which encourages carers to compile useful information which could be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing.

Carers, family members and friends can complete, in advance, a form recording all vital details, such as medication required, mobile numbers, places previously located, a photograph etc. In the event of your family member or friend going missing, the form can be easily sent or handed to the police to reduce the time taken in gathering this information.

The Herbert Protocol initiative is named after George Herbert, a War veteran of the Normandy landings, who lived with dementia.

Care and support with Dementia Forward Dementia Forward is the leading dementia charity for North Yorkshire and York, providing support, advice and wellbeing services for people living with dementia. Their aim is that when someone has concerns about dementia or is living with a diagnosis, they can access information and support, will feel informed and included and be able to live well within their community, doing the things they enjoy for as long as possible.

Dementia Forward started just 10 years ago, but has responded to the ever-increasing need for dementia services; growing and developing to reach more people, and now supporting over 4,000 families. The charity runs a weekly café, Friends Together Friday, at Clements Hall and a specific young onset group – known as Time Out

Together – which heads out each week from York for days out in the surrounding area. Young onset dementia is dementia diagnosed under the age of 65, and the charity strongly believes that services should be tailored to the specific needs of younger people, who may still be physically active and have a job, mortgage and family responsibilities. The young onset groups are designed to provide peer support and a chance to enjoy age appropriate activity, independent from family carers.

In addition to these groups, Dementia Forward will soon be launching a day service on Tuesdays in Poppleton. Dementia Forward day services, known as Hub Clubs, are a twist on traditional day care.

The day is designed around the needs and preferences of those attending, and staff and volunteers are on hand to ensure a range of activities to suit people’s tastes and abilities, a mix of busy and quiet times in the day, and one-to-one support where necessary.

Dementia Friendly Screenings Return to City Screen Following the decision by Picturehouse Cinema to discontinue their popular Dementia Friendly Screenings, we have now partnered up with City Screen, and will be sponsoring this event four times a year.

Our first screening will take place on Monday 9 May at 1.15pm, with refreshments provided from 12.30pm.
