Lorna follows Kerry in gaining CQC Registration Home Instead Senior Care York are delighted to announce that our plans to have two brand new Registered Care Managers with the regulatory body The Care Quality Commission (CQC), have been a success.

Last month the CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated home care provider shared the great news that Kerry Galloway had successfully had her application accepted to be registered and following this we wrote about how colleague Lorna Høegh was also in the process of going through her application to join Kerry as their second Registered Care Manager.

Home Instead are now able to confirm that last month Lorna had the fantastic news that her application had also been accepted by the CQC. Lorna and Kerry both joined Home Instead originally as CAREGivers back in 2015 and 2018 respectively. They quickly moved into Care Manager roles where they have excelled for over a year, managing the East and West areas of York.

With two Care Managers registered with CQC, it means they can work together, plan for the future and ensure Home Instead Senior Care York continues to provide ‘Outstanding’ rated, person centred support to their clients.

Last month, Home Instead York’s trainer, Rachel, completed her Basic Life Support, Train the Trainer programme with Home Instead’s National Office in Warrington, meaning she is now fully certified to conduct basic life support training to the team using new CPR manikin ‘Preston’.

Rachel then put her new skills to the test by holding her first session with the office team, it was a great success and the team are now fully trained in CPR!

Following August’s edition of the Elder, here is session 2 of our simple exercises to do at home:

Putting Oomph into fitness Stretch and Flex Movements Repeat this section twice Reach and Pull - Reach across your body as far as feels comfortable, with your hands flexed open. At the end point, grip and pull back to the centre position. Repeat with the other arm.

(8 on each side) Hip Opener - With one leg out as your base, rest your other leg on top with a slight bend at the knee. Gently push down on the knee to feel a stretch on your upper leg. (4 on each side) Chair Hold Plus Side Reach - Bring one hand across your body and hold on to the chair for support, then raise the opposite arm above your head and reach to the side. (8 on each side) Cat Stretch - While seated in a chair, round your shoulders forward and nod your head downwards.

Slowly move your head back up and gradually tilt back, looking upwards.

Bring your shoulders back and lift your chest forward. (10 times) Strength Movements Repeat this section twice High Knees Step Up - Hold on to a chair for support. With one leg at a time, raise your knee up to complete high knee steps. This can be done seated as a knee lift. (8 on each leg) Hip Extension - Hold on to a chair for support. Using one leg at a time, swing your leg backwards from your hip. (8 on each side) Rowing - With feet firmly on the ground, lean forward from the hips and reach both arms out. Bring your body back to the centre and pull your arms in, as if you are rowing. (16 times) Sit to Stand - From a sitting position, raise up to a standing position (without using your hands to support you into standing if possible) (No more than 3 times)

Co-ordination Movements Cross Crawl - Lift one knee and your opposite arm up together, then lower them down and lift the opposite knee and arm together. (do 15, have a rest, do 10, have a rest, do 5, have a rest) Knee Lifts - Lift each knee up in turn as high as feels comfortable. If you can, twist the upper body and touch your knee with the opposite elbow. (8 on each leg) Soft Cardio Movement Walk/jog like nobody is watching Put on your favourite song or radio station. When it’s the chorus of the song you walk/jog. When it stops, rest. See if you can do the full song!

Lorna celebrates 5 years’ service This month Lorna celebrates five years with Home Instead Senior Care York.

Lorna started with Home Instead originally as a CAREGiver back in 2015 but she quickly took on more responsibility in a more office-based role.

Since then Lorna has excelled in her role as a Care Manager and was last month accepted by CQC in her registration to become one of Home Instead York’s two Registered Care Managers.

Have you been cold called about ‘home appliance insurance’?

Ever received unexpected calls telling you that cover for your washing machine, oven, dishwasher or other home appliance cover is due for renewal?

Which? are looking to hear from anyone who’s been cold called and offered ‘home appliance insurance’.

Maybe you’ve given away your payment details over the phone, thinking the caller was from your existing insurance company, but later found out it was someone else.

Unfortunately this is a scam that seems to be plaguing lots of you at the moment, and is particularly targeting the elderly.

While there are legitimate insurers who will cover your household appliances if they break down, Which? have been investigating reports that some are fraudulently taking people’s money.

Misleading and aggressive sales tactics Which? have been told about various ways these companies are pressuring and misleading people into handing over their bank details.

Most commonly, they’ll pretend you already have a policy with them and offer to renew it for a cheaper price.

Some people who do have appliance warranties are often caught out by this.

They’ll then sign you up for pricey monthly direct debits for services that probably don’t even exist.

Others just go straight in for the hard sell, often calling

dozens of times a day, offering increasingly ‘better’ deals.

Most people probably don’t even need appliance breakdown cover, as many common appliance issues are covered by home contents insurance.

Shockingly, some callers even claim you owe hundreds of pounds for a policy you apparently signed up for years ago, but never paid for.

And they’ve been known to call back several times a day, threatening legal action and visits from debt collectors if you refuse to pay up.

But the threats are hollow. These companies have absolutely no right to take money from you. The calls are best ignored and reported.
