Home Instead Scarborough & Ryedale would like to take this opportunity to wish all our clients and their loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We’d also like to say a big thank you for continuing to put your trust in us and the service we provide throughout 2021.

As our way of spreading some festive cheer, we have created some Christmas goodie bags for all our clients to enjoy over the coming weeks. In the bags we’ve put a selection of sweet treats, festive activity booklets, and a few other Christmas related items to help our clients get into the Christmas spirit! We’ll also be including some wonderfully designed cards by local school children along with the goodie bags!

The perfect Christmas package Tracey and Jack visited Westway Open Arms in Eastfield, to provide a donation of Christmas treats. Westway are helping to support the Vulnerable & Elderly this Christmas, by putting together Christmas Eve Packages for them to enjoy.

We were delighted to be able to get involved in this wonderful project and it was great to meet with Bernie Brown, the Centre Manger there.

Me and my wife, Ann-Marie became Home Instead owners in York back in 2009 and have built that up to be one of the most well respected and established care organisations in the area. In 2020 we decided to open a second office in Scarborough, with the aim of bringing that same high quality personalised home care to the people of Scarborough & Ryedale.

My role is all about building relationships with local providers and organisations to find opportunities for Home Instead to contribute to the local community and to manage the business side of Home Instead.

Hi I’m Tracey, Community Engagement Co-ordinator for Scarborough and Ryedale.

The values of Home Instead are what attracted me to the company as they matched my own perfectly. My role is to get out into the Scarborough and Ryedale communities and build relationships with local providers and organisations; looking at opportunities for Home Instead to contribute to these local communities whilst raising awareness of Home Instead for potential clients and CAREGivers.

Operations Director Hi, I’m Ann-Marie, co-owner and Operations Director of Home Instead in York as well as in Scarborough and Ryedale.

In my role as Operations Director I am responsible for supporting the team to deliver the highest quality care to all of our clients. We do this by hiring the right people, providing award-winning training, monitoring the quality of everything we do and always applying ‘the mum test’ i.e. would this be what I would want for my Mum or Dad.

Community Engagement Coordinator

Care Coordinator I’ve absolutely loved my short time with Home Instead having joined the team recently in November. In my role as Care Coordinator, I’m in a position where I can be supporting our Clients and CAREGivers daily.

After different positions over a few years at other Care Providers, I saw an advert for Home Instead, applied and was lucky enough to secure the position of Care Co-ordinator. I now feel I have the job I want, working for a company that really cares and gives the quality of care I would like my own family to receive.

Top tips to help you stay warm through the winter months

Why should I consider leaving a gift in my Will to a charity?

n B oiler check-up. This time of year is perfect for your annual boiler service to make sure it’s in tip top condition. The last thing you need in the middle of winter is a broken boiler, and a freezing cold house.

Many people at different times in their lives experience the remarkable work done by charities. It may be working as a volunteer for a charity, raising money for a charitable cause or by making use of the services they offer when someone close suffers an illness. Legacies are the foundation for many charities and are vital in making sure that all the good work they do can continue.

Leaving a donation in your Will is one of the more traditional ways you can give to a charity and for many charities is a very important form of receiving gifts. Without the gifts left in Wills by people like you, many charities wouldn’t even exist. By putting your wishes in place at the time of making or updating your Will, you can make a planned gift to a charity you care about whilst at the same time ensuring dependants, family and friends are provided for.

When you make your Will, you can either name an individual charity or leave an amount of money to the Executors. As part of the Will instructions, you state how and to whom the sum of money is to be distributed to the charity or charities of your choice.

Another key point to note is that charitable legacies are paid before tax is deducted, reducing the total amount of inheritance

tax due from your estate.

Bethany Worthy is a Solicitor in the Private Client team of solicitors at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors in Pickering, looking after clients all across the Ryedale and Scarborough regions. She is a Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) accredited member. Her membership of SFE shows she has a wealth of experience within this key legal area as members are required to have spent a substantial amount of time working for older and vulnerable people as well as support for the family and carers.

n D raught excluders. It is important to make sure all windows and doors are in good condition. If you have old, cracked or broken frames you may want to seal the gaps or use draught excluders to stop the cold weather from creeping in! n H ot water bottle. Consider using a hot water bottle throughout the day if you’re at home and during the night in bed. They are relatively inexpensive and very useful, quickly heating up your bed without using electricity or fuel. n S everal thin layers. Try wearing several thin layers of clothing, rather than one big jumper – the layers trap hot air keeping you warmer for longer. To keep heating bills down, consider wrapping up in a blanket or wearing more layers, rather than turning up the thermostat. n K eep your pipes warm. Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing which could cause significant damage. The best way to prevent this from happening is to keep your pipes warm with their own foam cardigan (called lagging), which will reduce the heat lost and insulate the pipes to stop them from freezing. n K eep your feet warm. There’s nothing worse than cold feet! To keep yourself warm this winter, wear thermal or thick socks and sensible shoes if you’re venturing out. Wear boots with a thick lining and consider buying specially designed shoes, in case the weather turns icey! n B leed radiators. Trapped air in your radiators can prevent hot water from circulating effectively, which could be the reason your home isn’t as warm as it has been previously. Bleeding your radiators releases the trapped air and allows your central heating to work once again, keeping you and your property warm.

What’s on Where Often during the darker winter months, we see levels of loneliness and isolation amongst ageing adults on the rise. We thought therefore we’d share with you some great community groups which you or your loved ones can get involved in, to help in keeping busy and meeting new people during the winter.
