Over £250 raised for Alzheimer’s Linda generously donates books Earlier this month was #ReadABookDay, and what better day to introduce you to one of our lovely clients who has her very own story to tell.

Linda, a client of Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale since 2015, is a published author, compiler, and an editor of children’s books. Here she is with Titus’s Troublesome Tooth, a children’s book written by her in the year 2000!

Linda has very kindly donated us some of her books to lend out to our CAREGivers, to read to their children and grandchildren!

On Saturday 1st September, Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale entered a team to complete the Memory Walk at the York Knavesmire.

The aim of the walk was to raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society, so they can continue their research into Dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society’s research programme aims to improve care for people with dementia today and finding a cure for tomorrow.

Safer walking technology When a person with dementia gets lost, it causes anxiety and fear for both the missing person and their family.

Around a thousand people with dementia went missing in 2014–15, according to the UK Missing Persons Bureau. So to many, GPS trackers are an obvious solution. The decision to use GPS technology should be based on the best interests of the person’s safety, taking issues of privacy into account, and ideally having gained their consent.

A GPS can be reassuring and empowering for a person with dementia. It can offer a sense of security and independence, thus reducing stress and anxiety for the person, as well as their carers.

Going out for walks has been shown to offer both physical and psychological benefits for people with dementia as well as enabling them to stay independent and continue to live well in their local community.

The use of technology is not a substitute for good care and the right level of support but potentially offers peace of mind. They may also increase independence, allowing an individual more freedom and reduce the need for more restrictive measures, such as locking doors.

Inga wins ‘Bags on Tour’ competition The end is here... With Summer coming to a close, so must unfortunately, our ‘Bags on Tour’ competition. Many thanks to all those who sent in entries, we had some great ones from far and wide. There can only be one winner though. Getting her hands on a £25 voucher is CAREGiver Inga, who sent us this amazing snap from her wedding destination of Mauritius. I’m sure you can agree, it’s a worthy winner!

Jack celebrates 5 years at Home Instead Jack our Finance & HR Administrator last week celebrated 5 years with Home Instead York & Ryedale! He passed up the opportunity of a bunch of flowers and opted for team bacon butties instead, which more than pleased the rest of the York team.

Jack did get his hands on a gold badge and £50 restaurant voucher as well though!

Our CAREGiver Gill recently took her client David to Filey for the day, she sent us this great picture from a local Fish & Chip restaurant. What better way to spend your time on the coast, than with some Fish & Chips, and a nice cold pint?

Treats coming for everyone in their 50 plus years This year’s York 50+ Festival, now in its fourteenth year, will soon be here and the programme looks better than ever. Beginning on Friday 21st September the programme of events continues until Sunday 7th October, and includes the International Day of Older People on Monday 1st October.

With a vast range of FREE and taster events, the team who bring this programme together are hoping to reach out to those who may not have been involved before, as well as ‘regulars’ and people who may be new to York.

Highlights include all sorts of physical events, and we all know how important it is to keep active as we get older, from walking events and yoga (with or without laughter) to Tai Chi and Qi Gong, dance of all kinds English, Scottish, in lines or round and round (i.e. circle dancing).

For those who find daily pain a challenge there are special events for you and a series of good health themed events across the city.

Are you lonely or know someone who could do with a good excuse to get out and meet people?

Look no further, there are events for ‘Halves’, those who find themselves without their life partner, and NO KIDDING is a performance event about facing the challenges of ageing without children or relatives nearby.

How about celebrating age in other cultures with a special service at St Edward’s Church? Singing is joyful, and whatever your teacher said once, NOW you can do it, and we want to hear you! Vocal Flourish Community Choir have sessions across the city and in Acomb there is a special Schooldays Songs of Praise event.

The Festival offers a great opportunity to get ahead with some Fair Trade shopping with special previews of new items which benefit makers and buyers alike. Advice is also on hand with drop in sessions to find out more about the Older Citizens Advocacy services available in York.
