This Christmas, Home Instead York & Ryedale along with Dean’s Garden Centre in York, will be giving Christmas plants to all Home Instead clients. With each plant there will be an accompanying Christmas card, designed by local York schoolchildren.

The plants that were recommended by Dean’s are Kalanchoes.

These have a magnificent form, are easy to look after, and continue to look good for a long time, all characteristics that make a Kalanchoe a star amongst the flowering houseplants.

Home Instead are also running a ‘Nominate a Neighbour’ campaign. They will be asking their CAREGivers to ‘nominate a neighbour’, friend or just someone in the community who they think would also appreciate a festive plant.

Dean’s Garden Centre, York, opened in December 1968 and has grown from strength to strength ever since. During the last two years there has been a large amount of development work taking place which has resulted in a larger car park, a new goods inwards store, a new layout of the outdoor sales area including two new canopies meaning that you can enjoy looking outside more, without getting wet in the rain. Plus the opening of the new Bothy Coffee Shop in March of this year. The Bothy sells fresh foods prepared and cooked on the premises and includes Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Cakes, Sandwiches and Sunday Roasts.

Dean’s sell a wide range of gardening products covering everything that you will need to create and enjoy your own beautiful garden. They also have a large houseplant area and gift section, sell garden furniture and from 1st October each year there is

a Christmas department with colour themed displays with both traditional and modern decorations – Christmas trees, lights and so much more. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, offering expert advice to their customers.

The Garden Centre and Coffee Shop are open daily, so please see their website for details of opening times as they vary according to the time of year. The Garden Centre is open until 8pm and The Bothy until 7.30pm on a Tuesday throughout the year, serving food and drinks from the menu and specials board (last orders for food are 7.00pm).

Loyalty card holders can also take advantage of ‘triple points’ on all qualifying purchases from 4.30pm in both the Garden Centre and Coffee Shop.

Disabled parking is available, as are disabled toilets and easy access to all areas as everything is on one level. Also available are courtesy wheelchairs for use whilst visiting.

Dean’s have a second Garden Centre located on Seamer Road, Scarborough.

Local schoolgirl raises Dementia Awareness Local schoolgirl Beth, daughter of our CAREGiver Annette, came to our office last month to interview Karen, our Dementia Friends Champion.

Having had personal experience of Alzheimer’s and dementia from her grandma, who had mixed dementia, one of Beth’s friends spoke to her a while ago about Alzheimer’s Disease

Winter Check List Now that winter is here we’ve put together a check list to make sure you are ready for the cold winter days and nights.  Make sure your heating has been serviced. The general advice is you should do this annually.  Keep a torch handy in case of power cuts and a radio with extra batteries.  Make sure you have plenty of layers of clothing to wear, warm slippers for indoors and grippy shoes for if you go out.

After that, Beth decided that she’d like to represent her school and raise awareness about dementia within her age group, in case other pupils were also going through the same within their family.

Beth wanted to interview Karen and become a Dementia Friend so that she could gain more knowledge about Alzheimer’s Disease. She’s now taken that knowledge and made a presentation of her interview and dementia friend session, which she will be sharing at school in an assembly.

 Have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day. Eating regularly will help keep your energy levels up.  Make sure that the room you spend most of your time in is warm throughout the day.  Heat your bedroom before going to bed. Set the timer on your heating to come on before you get up and switch off when you go to bed.  Use an electric blanket or a hot water bottle but not at the same time.  Wear bed socks, thermal underwear and hat in bed if it’s really cold.  Make sure you have a list of emergency contacts such as your doctor, insurance helpline and chemist in case you need them.

Monday 18th December (Due to Christmas Day) 1.15pm • 120 minutes Dementia Friendly screenings seek to provide a fun and inclusive experience to enable people living with dementia, their families and carers to attend the cinema in a safe and welcoming environment.

Open to the general public too, the screenings are enhanced to suit the needs of people living with dementia: the lights are left on low, there are no adverts or trailers and the audience is allowed to move around or sing along to any musical numbers, should they wish to.

Tickets cost £4, accompanying carers go free.

Screenings take place on the last Monday of every month at 1.15pm with free tea, coffee and biscuits served from 12.45pm in the upstairs lounge to give people the chance to meet and socialise with others, and get to know the space. “A song and a smile” A new singing group from the York Branch of Parkinson’s Society helps breathing, speech, mobility and motivation, and is great fun! It takes place from 3.00-4.00pm on Wednesdays at The Old School, Wigginton.

The national charity, Parkinson’s UK, estimates that around 127,000 people currently live with Parkinson’s in the UK – just over one in 500 people. Parkinson’s Disease is associated with profound and prolonged adjustment, for the people living with the condition and those closest to them. These adjustments relate to changes in: overall wellbeing; physical ability; skills; verbal and non-verbal communication; relationships and social life; understanding and organisation.

A growing body of research has shown the value of singing in supporting people with Parkinson’s www.canterbury. ac.uk/health-and-wellbeing/ sidney-de-haan-research-centre/documents/singingand-people-with-parkinsons.pdf. Research evidence shows that group singing can support physical, emotional and social wellbeing, vocal strength and fluency, posture and stability.

A further and critical factor is the support that group singing can bring to people caring for those living with Parkinson’s. Singing together in activities that are fun, stimulating, motivating and appropriately challenging can enable a sense of shared achievement and emotional

expression. This can have a positive effect on carer/ cared-for relationships. “A song and a smile” is led by experienced professional community musician, Thea Jacob, alongside accompanist Joe Christie who is studying for his Masters in community music. Together they are creating a relaxed, very informal and supportive session, full of creativity, shared ownership and fun. An important part of the session is the varied warm up routines, that can be used at home to continue building on the health benefits of the group. It certainly seems to be working.

Members are already reporting “With this Parkinson’s my voice has been going downhill. Since I joined this group it’s coming back! It’s so enjoyable! And the warm ups are so worthwhile.” Another member says “The singing lessons have strengthened my voice, enabling me to finish my sentences without them fading away. I feel more confident when having a conversation”.

The group is free, on joining Parkinson’s UK. The York branch offers a wide range of support and beneficial activities as well as “A song and a smile”. They also offer help with transport so that everyone can get to their events.
