Every year the British public loses billions of pounds to fraudsters who bombard us with online, mail, door-to-door and telephone scams.

Scams, or frauds, can be difficult to investigate as they can be complicated and often involve many victims and suspects and enquiries outside of the UK so prevention, through awareness, is therefore a vital tool in combating these crimes.

Indie York – Putting York’s independent businesses on the map

Safeguarding is everybody’s business

From the 9th to the 13th of October Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale ran a series of Safeguarding workshops for their CAREGivers. Safeguarding week was aimed to raise awareness of the different forms abuse can take and that “safeguarding is everybody’s business”.

York is a hotbed for a huge variety of independent businesses, and it’s these places that give the city its charm.

York a unique place to live, work and visit. Indie York is the initiative which aims to promote independent businesses in the city and with this in mind, Indie York has brought together all these independent companies into one guide. Businesses spanning the retail, culture, health, wellbeing, services, food, drink and tourism sectors are all featured on the website and the interactive map which can be accessed at www.indieyork.co.uk It’s hoped that Indie York will provide you with a great starting point to help you discover and share, the huge range of extraordinary businesses from specialist shops and brilliant cafés, to intriguing galleries and top restaurants in York.

Learn more about The York ME Community ME stands for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and was recognised as a Neurological Disorder by the World Health Organisation in 1969. Estimates are that 250,000 people in the UK have ME, of which around 800 are in the York area.

ME can affect cognitive function, mobility,

speech, concentration, and things such as light and sound can be extremely debilitating.

It causes a broken energy production system and has a huge effect on the immune system.

The nature of the illness’s symptoms makes ME difficult to diagnose.

The York ME Community is a Support and

Awareness Group reaching out to those with ME, their friends, family or just for those who wish to learn more.

There is a website at www.York-MECommunity.org which gives lots of information on ME as well as a great mix of local and general stories of interest.
