Cooking with Carol In a new segment of The Companion, Care Manager Carol will be giving some easy recipes you can try with your clients. Why not send us some pictures of you and your clients getting creative in the kitchen.

Hearty vegetable soup This hearty vegetable soup is packed full of flavour and goodness, perfect to warm you up on a cold night.

Preparation Time: Less than 30 mins Cooking Time: 30 mins. to 1 hour Serves 2

Ingredients

• Olive/Vegetable Oil • 1 medium onion, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 2 celery sticks, trimmed and thinly sliced • 2 medium carrots or 2 yellow peppers, cut into 2cm/1in chunks • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 1 vegetable stock cube • 1 tsp dried mixed herbs • 400g tin butter beans (or other beans from the cupboard if you don’t have any) drained and rinsed • 1 head young spring greens

(approximately 125g), trimmed and sliced • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Method • Add oil to a large non-stick saucepan and cook the onion, garlic, celery and carrots or peppers gently for 10 minutes, stirring regularly until softened.

• Add 750ml/26fl oz water and the chopped tomatoes. Crumble over the stock cube and stir in the dried herbs.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.

• Season the soup with salt and pepper and add the spring greens and butter beans. Return to a gentle simmer and cook for a further 3-4 minutes or until the greens are softened. Season to taste and serve in deep bowls.

Noting the first signs of Sepsis A County Council strategy to tackle Sepsis in Lancashire care homes has received national praise.

Sepsis is a life threatening condition which kills more people than breast, bowel and lung cancer combined – and older people are at greater risk.

Care providers are urged to look for the symptoms of Sepsis using the acronym SEPSIS S - slurred speech E - extreme shivering or muscle pain P - passing no urine (in a day) S - severe breathlessness I - ‘I feel like I may die’ S - Skin mottled or discoloured

It is important to remember as a CAREGiver to be respectful of boundaries with your clients.

We shouldn’t be visiting outside of call times, you’re not insured if anything was to go wrong! Be mindful if exchanging personal details such as telephone numbers. Remember to keep the office in the loop so we can provide an holistic approach, working in partnership with others.



March 17 is St Patrick’s Day!

Meccano brings back memories for Roy Roy, 88, a client of Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale received some vintage Meccano for Christmas after reminiscing about owning some as a young boy.

When he was younger, Roy used to work as a miner nearby to his family home. Using his memory of the mine, he made this Meccano pit head from scratch. It has functioning lifts and it's an exact replica of the pit where he worked.

Unsurprisingly Roy was absolutely delighted with his creation and daughters Jane and Clare were incredibly proud.

More than 13 million pints of Guinness are guzzled around the world on St. Patrick’s Day. In a toast to the 258-yearold brew, here are some foamy facts about Ireland’s most famous drink:  Guinness is actually red – hold your glass up to the light and you’ll see The Black Stuff is actually a deep ruby red.  According to a recent UK survey

Guinness drinkers with moustaches trap an estimated 162,719 pints of beer in their facial fur every year.  The perfect pint takes 119.5 seconds to pour.  Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease on a brewery in Dublin in 1759.  It was originally marketed as a health product using the slogan: Guinness is good for you.  It is thankfully very low calorie – a pint of Guinness only contains about 126 calories.


