New apprentice joins office team

The Jorvik Yorkies kind donation

We’d like to say a huge ‘welcome’ to our new Apprentice Business Administrator, Lauren!

In her new role, Lauren will be responsible for supporting the office team with administrative tasks and helping things to run as smoothly as possible. Lauren will also be working towards completing her NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration with York College!

Having come from a retail background, this field of work is new to Lauren, but she understands the importance of the role that Home Instead plays in supporting clients in their own homes and she can draw upon great experience from her close relationship she has with her own Grandparents!

Home Instead York had a visit from local Scout, Bill, last month, who kindly donated Yorkie bars for all our clients to enjoy.

Bill was meant to be part of a team of 36 Scouts ‘The Jorvik Yorkies’ representing North Yorkshire on a trip to the European Scout Jamboree in Poland, back in June.

Unfortunately, the trip had to be postponed until 2021 due to COVID. Each of ‘The Jorvik Yorkies’ had to raise their own funds for the trip and they were tasked with taking things that represented York.

Nestlé therefore very kindly donated some of their Yorkie Bars.

As ‘The Jorvik Yorkies’ could no longer go on their trip, they thought that it would be better if people in York benefitted from the chocolate bars. They therefore got in touch with us about donating some for our clients to enjoy!

Welcome Lauren!

We took part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support last month. The annual coffee morning is the charity’s biggest fundraising event, helping them to raise an incredible £27.5m in 2019.

Although things were a little different this year and we could not actually host our own coffee morning event like we have done in previous years, that did not stop us from wanting to be involved.

This year, we tasked our CAREGivers with sending in photos of them and their clients in the kitchen putting their baking skills to the test and for each one received, we would donate £5 to Macmillan Cancer Support.

It was lovely to see so many great entries, here’s just a selection of the best ones we had sent in featuring some of our lovely clients. Huge thank you to all those who sent in photos, it was great to see so many people getting involved and helping us to raise over £80 for a fabulous cause.

Following October’s edition of the Elder, here is session 4 of our simple exercises to do at home:

Putting Oomph into fitness

Stretch and Flex Movements Repeat this section twice Forward Lean Stretch – Start by sitting up tall. Keep your hips still and lean your body forwards. Bring yourself back upright in your chair and repeat. (10 times) Shoulder Seat Stretch – Lift one arm out straight to the side and rest your other hand on your shoulder.

Rotate the straight arm round in a small, backwards circular motion. (5 on each side) Shoulder Hip Opener – Sitting upright. Bring your hands up to rest on your shoulders. Bend at the hips to bring your elbow towards the floor.

Rest and repeat. (5 on each side) Foot Side Stretch – With one foot flat on the floor, step out with the other leg to one side. Holding down on the knee of the foot that is flat, lean your body gently forwards. Hold at the end point and bring your body back to where you began. Do this on each side. (3 time each side)

Strength Movements Repeat this section twice Walk/Jog High Knees –Raise your knee up as high as feels comfortable.

Place down and lift the other knee.

Alternate each side as fast as you can, either at a walking or jogging pace.

(15 each side) Standing Supported Squat – Using a chair to support you, stand to the side and move from a standing position into a squat position. (10 times) Ham String Curls – Using a chair to support you, raise one leg at a time up behind you, to a 90° angle.

Return back down and switch legs.

(10 each side) Double Leg Lifts – Clutch a small ball in between your feet. Hold the chair arms for support and raise both legs up together and place back down. (10 times) Coordination Movements Alphabet – Imagine your toe is a pen. Raise one leg and write every

letter of the alphabet with one foot.

Rest and repeat with the other foot.

Hip To Knee – Hold a ball/ball of socks in your hands.  Tap your right hip then your left knee.  Now tap your left hip then your right knee. See how fast you can get this routine going. (20 times) Soft Cardio Movement Mini circuit  Leg kicks  Double arm reach outs  Buttercup side reach on each arm.

Do each of the movements 5, 10 or 15 times and give yourself plenty of rest in between. This is a mini circuit to get you going.

Guidance notes: You may notice your heart rate increase – this is normal. Before you get started, it is important to be aware of any health issues that could affect your workouts.

Home Instead team take part in ‘Memory Walks’ On September 20th the team at Home Instead York took part in the annual Memory Walk for the Alzheimer’s Society.

We asked our team to send us a picture of them out on their walk, with family, on their own, or out with a client and for every picture we received we would donate £5 to the Alzheimer’s Society. We had some fantastic pictures sent in – here’s just a selection of some of the best ones!

Surprise visit from Morrisons We had a surprise visit from Morrisons during September. They very kindly delivered some boxes of biscuits for the team to enjoy and told us all about their new ‘Doorstep Delivery’ service.

Morrisons are playing their part in helping the local community by setting up a Doorstop Delivery service for people who are elderly or are unable to get to the shops, vulnerable, isolating or shielding.

To order your delivery, simply write out your shopping list including any of Morrisons fresh Market Street produce and call 0345 611 6111 to place your order.

If you order by 5pm on Monday to Saturday they will get your delivery to you by the next day!

Raising awareness of benefits of healthy balanced diet During October we joined BAPEN and the Malnutrition Task Force in raising awareness amongst the CAREGivers about the risks of undernourishment in the over 65’s and the benefits of a healthy balanced diet.

Malnutrition is estimated to affect 3 million people within the UK, with 1/3rd of them being the over 65’s. For those later in life, malnutrition can have complex health repercussions.

Over the course of a week, e-learning was made available to all CAREGivers, useful handout guides and further support found from the Malnutrition Task Forces and BAPEN websites along with interaction on social media, sharing some best practice, helpful techniques and favourite recipes.
