Why is professional nail care so ? important
Many of us don’t give a second thought to our toenails until a painful condition starts to affect our mobility.
As well as the potential to cause pain and discomfort, issues like ingrown toenails and infections can become more serious as we age.
Studies have found that nail changes - such as brittle nails, discolouration or numb toes - can indicate underlying health conditions.
Having regular home nail care appointments with Home Instead means our experienced, friendly Care Professionals can help recognise any troublesome nail issues early, as well as help you feel refreshed from your fingers to your toes.
Why is best delivered at home? nail care
Obtaining chiropody appointments through the NHS or from local providers of this service can be challenging due to long wait times and often these are appointments that serve a purpose in the short term, but there is no thought given to the recipients experience of the treatment.
Our service is a useful alternative that, while not offering full chiropody, focuses on nail health as a preventative approach rather than to treat conditions that have already developed.
The benefits of nail care at home include:
Avoiding travel to and from appointments. Working around daily routine, schedules, preferences and mobility issues.
Minimising risk of infection, which is often heightened in clinical settings.

Treatments in a familiar & comfortable environment allowing you or your loved one to relax.

What does a appointment involve? nail care
At Home Instead we specialise in at-home domiciliary car help you or your loved one avoid stressful appointments while preserving as much independence as possible.
Nail care is no exception. We can provide a trained Care Professional to help maintain nail health from home. Our approach means full personalised nail care. Including:

A pre-visit risk assessment for conditions like diabetes, haemophillia, poor circulation and more. (Our Care Professionals will not carry out nail care on diagnosed diabetic patients - they will require specialist foot care from their GP)
A Care Professional with an accredited nail cutting and care qualification.

Full pedicure service including trimming, filing, and cuticle maintenance. (Optional moisturising and nail polish application)
Regular checks for signs of ill health, and if necessary, recommendations for clinical intervention. (Our service does not include chiropody, so our team will advise if a separate medical check-up is required)
A full clean to refresh nails to ensure feet remain free from infections together with relaxing massage to promote wellbeing.

Friendship Lunches

Friendship Lunches
Donna has been running our Home Instead Friendship Lunches in Doncaster for over a year and has written about how she feels they add value to the community and our Clients who attend.
“These friendship lunches are a real hit!
I’ve been running them for the past 18 months and it’s one of my greatest ever accomplishments building them up and watching them grow. When I started to run the lunches we would get around 25 people attending, which was great, but we now see numbers of attendees reaching over 100, depending on the venue capacity.
The most charity money we’ve raised at a single event is £386, which was all for the Home Instead Charity. The charity money we raise at each event is a massive achievement and has played a big role in Doncaster Home Instead winning a charities award this year at the network conference (see page X).

The lunches also help to reduce social isolation and help encourage our seniors to get moving and go out and socialise. We want our community to stay well for longer and that’s why Home Instead provide such great events working along side Home Instead charities UK. I make it my mission to get to know everyone and find them a group to join or another person whom they match to sit with. They all look out for one another and have become the friendship lunch family. It’s a joy to watch everyone have fun.
Being a Care Pro out in the community for Home Instead Doncaster, I know how to support older people. I’m a highly trained care professional and know how look out for any red flags .
The feedback we have from these events is excellent and we also encourage groups from care homes/assisted living facilities join us in the fun.

A client said to me “thank you Donna, because when I come to the lunches I feel alive again and not alone anymore “
I personally would like to thank Doncaster Home Instead for providing these wonderful events for our community.”

H I t d Charity Award

In January 2024 at our annual network conference, we were surprised and delighted to be awarded with the Home Instead Charities award for the work we do in the Doncaster community and the money that we have raised for the charity.

Over the last 12 months we have raised over £6000 for Home Instead Charities by running various community groups and one off charity events in the Doncaster territory.
From play on the pitch games against Doncaster Belles youth team and casino nights at our office home of the Eco Power stadium, to our regular friendship lunches, sporting friendship group and talk tech cafes, we are always looking at ways to raise funds through fun events.
Our Home Instead Charity ringfence funds raised, so that they can be drawn down through grants by local groups aimed at the over 55's. We want ALL ageing adults to thrive, feel connected and play an active part in their communities.
If you would like to apply for a grant through the Home Instead Charity, please visit the charity website by CLICKING HERE to see if you fit the criteria.

Home Instead Charity Donations

Over the months of November and December 2023, all charity money raised from The Home Instead Wakefield Friendship Lunches was donated to three Dementia Daycare Centres in the Wakefield area.
Memory Action Group (MAG) run by Jan Archbold and her volunteers, Bless Dementia Daycare Group, organised by Julie Green and her team of volunteers, and Wakefield Hospice, organised by Debby Veigas BEM, and her team at the Hospice.

The monies raised from the bingo, raffle and card games came to a total of £1921. Home Instead then increased the pot to £2100, so we could give £700 to each charity.
Lee Masterman, Community Engagement Officer at Home Instead Wakefield had the great pleasure in presenting the donations to the three charities.
We are so proud to work with these community groups as we all share the same vision to help our ageing adults stay healthy, active and independent.

Healthcare at home
Home Instead Doncaster Case Study: June
June was admitted to DRI (Doncaster Royal Infirmary) in August 2022 with Asthma, Chronic Respiratory failure, Obstructive sleep apnoea, COPD and Hypo- Ventilation Syndrome. June spent 4 months in hospital, initially confused with very low energy levels and was considered to need 24hr care, potentially in a Care Home facility, however June was very much against this and wanted to remain in her own home.
While in DRI June was assessed and prescribed the use of a Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) mask to be worn at night in bed. The use of the mask in hospital improved June’s physical and mental wellbeing almost immediately, but, June was unable to leave the ward until she had a support package in place to encourage and assist with the wearing of her mask at night. The mask, as advised by Junes health care professionals needed to be worn for over 6 hours to stabilise health conditions, improve mental health and cognition during the day.
Local Care companies were approached by the Integrated Discharge Team to support June, but none felt that the NIV mask was something that they were able to assist with. When we were contacted here at Home Instead, we were confident that we could support June with this health intervention and, after thorough training by DRI on the hospital ward, we began to provide night care visits. Full training from the hospital physiotherapy team was provided along with competency checks for all staff attending to June.
June recognises that the use of the mask has made a positive impact to her daily life. June initially struggled to adjust to using the mask, but with some encouragement from our Care Professionals she now regularly wears the mask for over the recommended time. Through consistent care, June has been free from hospital readmission in relation to her breathing.
June has managed two holidays with her sisters in their caravan and looks forward to another holiday this summer.

June praises the "smashing" service, has bonded with her Care Pros and says she feels like she has friends visiting her every night.

The Comforts of Home: Why Rehabilitation at Home Is the Optimal Choice
Rehabilitation is a crucial phase in the recovery process from illness, injury, or surgery. Traditionally, this process has been associated with hospitals and specialized facilities. However, there’s a growing recognition of the benefits of home-based rehabilitation. Here’s why rehabilitation at home is often the best path to recovery.
Familiarity and Comfort The home environment offers a sense of familiarity and comfort that is unmatched by clinical settings. Being in a space filled with personal memories and belongings can significantly reduce stress and anxiety, which are common during recovery. This emotional well-being is a vital contributor to overall healing.
Tailored Care Plans Home-based rehabilitation allows for highly individualized care plans. Healthcare professionals can customize interventions to suit the specific needs and preferences of the patient, ensuring that the rehabilitation program is not only effective but also conducive to the patient’s lifestyle and daily routines.
Enhanced Independence Rehabilitation at home empowers individuals to take an active role in their recovery, fostering a sense of independence. This autonomy boosts confidence and motivates adherence to rehabilitation routines.
Reduced Risk of Infections Hospitals carry inherent risks of infections due to the presence of various pathogens. Home-based rehabilitation minimizes exposure to potential infections, especially important for those with vulnerable immune systems.
Cost-Efficiency Home-based rehabilitation can be more cost-effective compared to prolonged hospital stays. It reduces the financial burden on both the healthcare system and the patient’s family, eliminating expenses related to transportation and accommodation.

Home-based rehabilitation offers a multitude of benefits that can lead to a more comfortable, efficient, and effective recovery proving that sometimes, the best place to heal is at home. Zoe March (Director)

Understanding Live In Care
Live-in care is when a carer lives in the home of the person the care for. They offer personalised support from companionship and assistance with daily activities to more complex care needs
Live-in care allows individuals to maintain their daily routines, hobbies, and social commitments while receiving assistance where needed.

A live-in carer’s role is multifaceted. Live-in carers may assist with daily tasks such as bathing, getting dressed, preparing meals and managing medication. They may also help with housework or other tasks that the person they’re supporting requires assistance with, such as going out into the community, meeting friends, going to appointments and helping with shopping. Live-in care is different to 24hour care, which is when someone needs to be supported around the clock and cannot be left unsupervised.
Typically, a live-in carer works 8-10 hours daily and must have an uninterrupted daily break. They must have their own bedroom and are entitled to privacy and downtime. The hours that they are working are dedicated to the person they’re supporting. However, the times that they’re not working are their own to rest.
A live-in carer offers one-to-one support and care tailored to individual preferences, lifestyle and routine. It ensures consistency and fosters a personal relationship. Individuals are able to stay in a familiar environment with live-in care. This familiarity can b i l f h d ling with cognitive conditions like dementia.

ome Instead we believe that people thrive in their later years n they are able to remain independent and the best place to his is in their own home. We understand that people etimes require care around the clock and often care homes nursing homes aren’t able to provide dedicated one-to-one port.
ou know someone who would benefit from live-in care, please in touch with your local office using the information on the page of this newsletter. Rob Moore (Director)

“I joined Home Instead Doncaster just over 3 years ago as ‘Head of Care Professionals’ in the Doncaster office and was recently offered the opportunity to be ‘Group Head of People’ for Doncaster, Wakefield and Rotherham.
After working in the care industry for 10 years prior, joining the Doncaster team was a breath of fresh air and gave me a real insight of what quality care looks like.

Jen (Group Head of People)
I am extremely proud of the outstanding level of care we provide and the accomplishments we have achieved over the years as a team.
My career in care started as a fresh faced 18-year-old Care Professional, trying to find my way in the world of care. I never anticipated I would still be trying to find my way all these years later!! I learned during this time what a significant role Care Pros play in our community. I realised how important it is for Care Pros to feel support and encouragement from their employer. I recognised the need for the role to be acknowledged as a professional career choice. I am passionate about changing the perceptions around care and using my own personal experiences (good and bad!!) to develop strategies to improve the experience for all Care Pros.
I’m excited to join the Central Team and am looking forward to sharing best practice and standardising the same excellent standards across the group. I am confident that by joining forces, we will be able to provide the highest quality care and give our team of skilled Care Professionals the best experience across all areas!
I can’t wait to start share my time across all the three offices and get to know everyone on my travels.”

I recognised the need for the role to be acknowledged as a professional career choice.

“I joined Home Instead Elmbridge and East Spelthorne office in Surrey at the end of 2019 having completed my undergraduate degree at university.
I had experienced the great service Home Instead provides for a number of years with my late grandmother being a long standing client.
After two very enjoyable years I felt very privileged to be offered the job of Operations Manager in Wakefield in the summer of 2022.

Each week I enjoy interacting with a whole host of stakeholders in the city and surrounding areas, from supporting our wonderful clients and Care Professionals to building relationships with other valuable organisations and services who each share a desire to provide as much value and enjoyments to vulnerable adults in the communities of Wakefield.
Hearing the feedback we receive from all we interact with about the work we do and the support we provide helps me to know we are on the right track to bringing value to the lives of as many people as possible.”

“My name is Sara.
I have been diligently working in the caregiving field for over two decades.
My initial caregiving role involved providing assistance to a woman with cerebral palsy.

Sara - Wakefield Care Pro
Subsequently, I gained employment at a company called Carewatch, which marked my introduction to domiciliary care. Following this experience, I had the privilege of working as a home support worker for the Alzheimer's Society.
During my tenure there, I received comprehensive training and acquired invaluable expertise in dementia care. After six fulfilling years at the Alzheimer's Society, circumstances led to my redundancy.
Consequently, I embarked on a journey as a self-employed support worker, continuing to provide assistance to individuals I had previously supported while at the Alzheimer's Society.
Regrettably, five years ago, one of my primary clients passed away, prompting me to seek employment at Home Instead, where I was fortunately successful in securing a position.
I genuinely derive great pleasure from my work, and it does not feel like a burden or a chore.“

I recognised the need for the role to be acknowledged as a professional career choice.
