Meet The Members

Life as a CEO and business-owner can be stressful, with lots of commuting, an endless stream of hotels and the everpresent challenge to find suitable meeting areas that have the right balance of service, style and privacy. Before I joined Home House, I found myself regularly spending days and nights away from home, on my own in a soulless hotel with no company, only a television for entertainment and the daunting prospect of sitting alone in a hotel bar to eat a drab meal.

I had never considered the idea of joining a members club until I was introduced to Home House by a friend. My friend knew I was travelling back and forth to London on business and I had on more than one occasion found myself wishing for a familiar face or the comforts of home. It might sound a bit twee to describe somewhere as home from home, but I think it’s the best way to describe what Home House has become to me after my incredible 10-year journey as a member.

The experience of being at Home House is like no other. It combines architectural splendour with quintessentially British service and a truly modern flair for entertaining. In its many beautiful rooms I can enjoy everything from a private breakfast meeting on the terrace with a new potential client, through to lavish cocktails at the bar, or a silent moment with a newspaper and afternoon tea, and at the end of the day I can enjoy one of the unforgettable fancy dress parties it famously hosts. It’s not surprising to know that I no longer dread my business trips to London, but look forward to what new and wonderful experience I’ll enjoy next, whether it’s rum tasting, learning how to play backgammon, or sitting beside someone totally remarkable at dinner.

One of the great privileges of being a businesswoman is that I get to meet amazing people. Home House allows me to do this in a beautiful, professional, safe and friendly setting. Through being a member I have made new friends and have changed my whole experience of business travel. I hope that I can show others the same warm welcome I have received from both staff and members.

Hi my name is Dr Byron Cole and I am a multi awardwinning serial entrepreneur and Sunday time best selling author with Penguin. As a business mentor, I help Startups and entrepreneurs to become owners of their own destiny and build their own business empires. As an entrepreneur, business owner and investor of over 20 businesses, I know how hard and lonely the journey can be which is one of the reasons I joined Home House some 10 years ago. I wanted to grow and expand my network in a natural and organic social environment. At a young age I achieved financial freedom and joining the club was an extension of my journey. I didn’t just want to attend networking events, I wanted a home from home which is the clubs ethos and this resonated with me. Since joining, I have meet some incredible people and developed many relationships which have turned into life-long friendships. I’m a proud member and excited to see what’s to come.

Mike Hodges

Iam a busy family man, a loyal dog walker to Bronte, my Springer Spaniel, and the founder and Managing Director of Carrington Wealth Management. I have been a Home House member for about 11 years.

Home House has been an important part of my life during this time, as when I moved my company to the West End in 2010 I wanted a space that would satisfy various needs for us – a place where we could meet clients, hold internal meetings, host events and socialise, and very importantly, somewhere to work off those calories from all the socialising! We are all about the personal touch at Carrington and therefore appreciate the quality service we receive from the team at Home House, especially Marcel and the two Alis.

Along with my business partner, Alistair Candlish (also a member), I run an award-winning boutique wealth management company, not far from Home House. We look after private clients, supporting them and their families, and helping them make key financial and life decisions.

When I’m not working or with the family, I can be found partaking in one of my many sporting passions: on the golf course perfecting my swing, at Lord’s following the cricket, or cheering on my beloved Hornets at Vicarage Road.

Paul Bass

Ican look in the mirror and say quite confidently that I’ve not had a boring life, and I feel very fortunate to be able to make the choices I can at this stage of my life. I enjoy the good things in life – within reason – but I never forget my roots. I’m a Northern boy from a normal village near a normal town. Much to my parent’s dismay, I decided to leave home and join the Navy when I was 16. I spent all of my operational career on the UK’s nuclear submarines, and like my father before me I managed to climb the corporate ladder from the lowest sailor apprentice to be a Submarine Commander.

I crave socialising and enjoy nothing better than to party, but underneath it I’m also quite socially distant. I often dress to stand out and be a little different... I’m not a follower of fashion and at 6ft 3 I stand out anyway! I must admit to myself that I like attention, but I’m also not particularly confident when you scratch the surface (perhaps harking back to that normal Northern boy finding himself mixing where he doesn’t belong).

I joined Home House years ago looking for something that was different, that would excite me and keep me interested and it most definitely has done that. Every few months my wife and I stay in the amazing suites. We have a favourite, but I recommend exploring them all and discovering your own. I joined for a reason, and that remains an eclectic mix of fun, frivolity, privilege, personality and clandestineness that fulfils the needs of someone like me – an enigma – or simply someone looking for that ‘thing’ to keep them on the edge.

Omer Shaikh

As a proud member of Home House since 2008, walking through those large, double Georgian doors on Portman Square feels just as special today as it did the very first time I entered all those years ago.

The warm greeting of the team, the eclectic mix of members, the culinary delights of the regularly changing menus, the amazing and absolutely fabulous members parties, the varied selection of rooms and décor – from modern contemporary to (as I like to call it) shabby chic –this is all part of the magical and unique experience that makes Home House so special, and genuinely my home from home.

I’ve been lucky enough to create many wonderful memories here over the years and look forward to many, many more to come. Home House is an enchanting hub of excitement, community, creativity, luxury, serenity, culture, decadence and whatever else you want it to be!

Nicola Bunting

Ihave had a love affair with Home House since I first walked through your doors about 12 years ago. I was looking for somewhere stylish and beautiful to meet my executive coaching clients, having met them at traditional and corporate venues until that point, which wasn’t really my style. Having grown up in Italy, lived across the US for several years, and living in the world heritage City of Bath for the last 15 years, I love being in beautiful, stylish, historic, quirky surroundings and Home House felt like Home straight away. So I joined immediately. Over the years I’ve given many talks for fellow-members on topics ranging from changing your life to reinventing your career, most recently on how to be inspired by living in time. I’ve enjoyed the club personally as well, staying overnight on several occasions, going to some of the fabulous parties, enjoying meals out with friends and clients in the Garden restaurant. As the author of a book on change, “Who Do You Want To Be? How To Embrace Change and Live Your Dream,” I’m always open to making changes and encouraging others to do the same when the moment is right. But my membership at beautiful, welcoming Home House, my home from home when I’m visiting London, is something I hope to continue for many years to come. And let’s not forget the wonderful, welcoming staff. If you see me in the Drawing Room or elsewhere around the House, please come up and say hello. I always enjoy connecting with other Home House members.

@drnicolabunting

Luigi Ippolito

It’s been six years since I moved from Italy to London to work as foreign correspondent for Corriere della Sera, the leading Italian newspaper. And six exciting years they have been! Amongst the Brexit saga, the royal scandals and Boris’ antics, I discovered that this place can be even more colourful and entertaining than my home country.

When I’m not wandering along the corridors in Downing Street (looking for news, not parties!) you can find me hanging around Home House. I came across the club by chance, having been invited to a work meeting, and I immediately realised that it was the perfect place to impress my own guests.

Whether I am interviewing best-selling authors or entertaining seasoned ambassadors, the Drawing Rooms or The Restaurant provide the perfect backdrop. However, I soon discovered that Home House is much more than this, and that its most notable assets are the Members.

By attending an amazingly diverse social events calendar, I have had the chance to meet such an interesting array of people that I ended up featuring some of them more than once in my articles about London life (while the Garden acted as the setting for some of my podcasts). Finally, a well-deserved mention goes to the superb staff: from the managers to the people at the cloakroom, they always go that extra mile to make you feel truly at Home.

Particular highlights so far have included a shoot day at Holland & Holland and The Green Room rugby dinner. I’m looking forward to meeting more members and making the most of both the garden and the tennis courts once the weather warms up.

Richard Balfour-Lynn

My wife, Leslie and I co-founded and jointly run Balfour Winery in Staplehurst, Kent. From planting our first vines 20 years ago, we’re now one of the largest English wineries producing over 400,000 bottles of still and sparkling wines a year as well as a range of beers and ciders. The wines are exported around the world and are available in many national retailers as well as some of the UK’s most prestigious restaurants.

The winery is located on our beautiful 400-acre Hush Heath Estate and boasts a 200-person tasting room that welcomes over 20,000 visitors per year. A far cry from when we made 10,000 bottles in our first vintage and no-one had ever heard of English wine!

I’ve been a member of Home House since its launch, as my office at the time was five minutes away in Marble Arch. I was cofounder and CEO of a property group that owned and managed several hotel businesses: Malmaison, Hotel du Vin, De Vere golf and leisure resorts and Village Hotels as well as London department store, Liberty.

Home House was where I held many private meetings and entertained many over a relaxed lunch or dinner. Nowadays Leslie and I use Home House when we’re staying in London and find its ambience and facilities the perfect place and location.

Amember of Home House since 2018, with 30 years International lifestyle experience having lived on 4 different continents. Now based in London, I’m an entrepreneur and business owner of three different brands across Property, Financial Investment and E-commerce (Pearluminous.com). I love the architecture and the history behind Home House. The main reason I became a member was to have a space to showcase my Pearls to private clients and hold business investment meetings. The location is excellent, grand but less formal with a vibrant atmosphere! I also very much enjoy meeting more likeminded entrepreneurs and the marvellous restaurants with delicious food.

@pearluminous_

There’s something uniquely intoxicating about Home House. For me, it feels planetary in scale, yet as subtle as the front door. The place is a cornucopia of pleasures where you can experience as much or as little as you desire. From my footloose and fancy-free days as a member, to now, my optics may have changed, but Home House always delivers.

Let’s face it, anywhere where the dress code simply requests that you’re not naked in a public area clearly wants to focus on the things that matter! I’ve come to know that what that is, it’s the people – not just the members, but the staff too. Thank you, Home House.

Joshua Kane: Designer, Director and Rule-Breaker

When did you first become a Member and what does Home House mean to you?

I first became a member in September 2020. It was just after the first lockdown had ended and I was super excited to be going out and socialising again. I started meeting with clients and other designers and graphic designers, and it was the perfect location to meet people as it was so close to my office in Marylebone. I also hosted a collection shoot at Home House which was really special, where we hosted an immersive dinner event for 12 ambassadors in the Asylum private dining room and on the balcony overlooking the Garden.

Tell us about some of your favourite memories at Home House?

That’s a really easy one. My absolute favourite memory from Home House would have to be the end of January last year when I hosted my engagement party for 100 guests. Myself and my fiancé took one of the private rooms and we had all of our friends and family there to celebrate our engagement, which was really special. It was such a magical experience and we made many memories that night. Without a doubt, that is absolutely my favourite memory at Home House.

We hear it’s a really exciting year for you, can you tell us more about the homeware collection you’re launching?

14 Home House Member In Focus: Joshua Kane
Joshua Kane, founder of the eponymous tailoring label, talks about how it all began, his latest collection and what the club means to him.

So for this year we are very excited and proud to be developing the first few exclusive pieces for our very first Joshua Kane homeware collection. We’re using our beautiful historic British woven fabrics in wools and 100% silks with fabric wrapped vintage furniture, plus some of our iconic fabric designs printed onto wallpapers in a range of colours. It’s going to feature the depth of our 9 year archive with some of the original patterns from our first ever runway, as well as completely new fabric designs which will be available from the mid to end of 2023.

Can you tell us anything about your new runway collection?

We do one runway collection a year and following the success of our Dandy Rebels runway show last year which was our first ever live show in the US, we’re looking for bigger, better and more adventurous this year. I can’t say too much about it yet as we haven’t fully announced anything but we’re looking for a new International location to present the next collection. It’s going encompass spring, summer and winter designs all amalgamated into one experience.

Where do you get your creative inspiration?

My creative inspiration mainly comes from people. From my family and friends to people I work with and meet along the way. I always say I love to be a sponge when meeting people. It’s characters that inspire me more than anything. Even looking back at old stories of Beau Brummell, the original dandy, and what his narrative was –that’s the most inspiring thing. It’s very much about storytelling and character-building.

When did you know you wanted to become a designer?

I would say it was probably when I was in sixth form, so I would have been around 17 years old. As part of our Art Class we had a fashion design module where we spent two weeks becoming a fashion designer, which is of course quite a brief introduction - but I’d always loved designing outfits and characters from a young age and would design superhero costumes. It became a natural transition to design and create characters within that early impression of what fashion could be for me. I fell in love with it right away.

What made you decide to strike out on your own

That was quite an easy transition for me. I’d worked for Jaeger and Burberry Prorsum and did a runway collection for Sir Paul Smith for a number of years. I spent about 12 to 15 years working in the industry, harnessing my skills and experience – all the while creating my own bespoke suits at home. It became a natural transition where I felt like, at some stage I had to take a big risk. I was already designing my clothes and

Home House 15 Member In Focus: Joshua Kane

it was just calculating that risk to a point where I thought that people would want to order them. I definitely took the risk and I’ve never looked back!

What do you love most about working in fashion?

I love meeting people. I love all the different characters from all different walks of life that I’m lucky enough to work with and create designs for. So whether it’s someone’s wedding suit and they’ve saved up their entire life to come and get something beautifully made by me, it’s a red carpet outfit for someone’s that’s never walked a red carpet, or it’s for someone that’s performing on stage for the hundredth time, I love all the inspirational characters I get to meet. That’s what I love most about the fashion industry. It brings really interesting people together.

How does your approach merge traditional tailoring and design with your own unique style and innovation?

I love taking bits of technology and mixing it with the oldest bespoke hand-sewn design techniques and fusing all of those things together to personally express myself. I like to break rules. I don’t like to conform to boundaries that other people have set. I was always taught: once you know what the rules are, you always have the ability to break them where you see fit.

Tell us about some of your career highlights so far?

My career highlight is always the thing that I last did, so it would be putting on my first ever show in the US. It was a massive achievement to do an entire runway collection halfway across the world, with loads of people working on the collection internationally, flying the collection back, taking the entire team with us and setting up shop temporarily to pull it off. Yeah…that hasn’t really set in yet!

Tell us about your last ‘pinch yourself’ moment?

I pretty much get one of those a day at the moment! But it was probably the morning after the Dandy Rebels show – waking up and searching the images on Google and seeing pictures of the show. Obviously being backstage I didn’t see what was happening at the time, so then you see a professional photo of the models in all the looks and the staging in the setting with the video game projected 360 degrees all the way around the show. That was a crazy moment. I’m still pinching myself about it every morning.

What’s next for you in 2023 and beyond?

The most exciting thing about this year I think is working simultaneously across the runway and the homeware collection, whilst also creating and developing our Joshua Kane video game. I think this year is an amazing year to pull all of the different design projects together with the

identity of the brand running throughout. So the video game and the homeware collection will feature fabric designs from our archives as well as the brand new runway collection, threading together all the different projects into one big Joshua Kane world.

How did you get into designing and developing a video game?

I started designing video games about three and a half years ago, but it’s been a childhood dream of mine for as long as I can remember. All of my runway shows are very much about world building, character building and concept building. Within that there’s always limitations. I can’t do certain things I would love to do for the runway shows, but stepping into the digital realm I can do all of that and more at the click of a few buttons. We’ve been creating an 1850’s scale of London within the game as the map, and that creates the most amazing setting for the video game.

What advice would you give to young designers trying to make it in the fashion industry today?

The industry now is a very different industry to when I started in 2008, which is when I graduated. There’s so many more ways to get into it now than there used to be. It used to be very linear: you go to art school, you go to fashion school, you graduate, you try and get a job. There’s a million different ways to access the industry now, and technology has a big part to play in that. One thing still stands true though, if you want to be successful and if you want to make it, it’s literally about working harder than anyone else around you in that room and being more dedicated than anyone else. I was definitely never the best drawer or designer in my year of graduation, but I was very determined to succeed and to keep learning new skill sets to try and differentiate myself from everyone else as a designer. Determination and dedication would be my best advice.

How To Create The Perfect Easter Table

Learn how to design your tablescape and transform your table this Spring with styling tips from Louisa Preskett, Director of luxury British homeware brand Maison Margaux.

Go Bold with a Patterned Table Linen

No matter how big or small your garden is or whatever the British summer sky might be doing that day, bring instant life, joy and sunshine to your space with a colourful or patterned table linen. A patterned backdrop to even the most modest tableware will instantly look beautiful and considered.

Have Fun with Your Glassware

We love to use interesting and fun glassware. Most people have a set of standard wine glasses at home, so dress them up by using a coloured or detailed water glass alongside them. Go with classic navy wicker for a chic blue and white look or a pale pink bobble glass for something soft and feminine and add wine carafes to the table instead of serving straight from the bottle.

28 Home House The Perfect Easter Table

Layering - The Rule of 3

We always work with the rule of three when setting our table. Start with a place mat, this is your first layer. Wicker is great for that laid back luxe vibe. Next for your second layer, lay your lunch or dinner plate, a plain white plate is perfect and great to show off the food when it’s served. Definitely invest in a matching dinner and dessert plate. For your third and final layer, go bold. This year we are loving handpainted floral motifs, lemon patterned plates for that Mediterranean vibe, pale rustic pinks or classic blue and white ikat plates which are always in style. Match your guests personality to the design for a fun talking point and real personal touch. When layering, the aim is that when your guests walk in, they see a beautifully set table. You can then whisk the plates away when you want to serve the food.

Don’t Forget Your Lighting

If you’re al fresco this Easter, even though the nights are getting lighter and evenings longer, there still comes a moment in the evening when that lovely low light hits. We love using soft overhead bulbs, to bring a little magic to the space. Dot ground lanterns around the garden for low soft lighting for a chic look in any garden, urban or countryside setting. And on the tables always use low candle holders, candlelight instantly makes the table feel like an ‘occasion’!

It’s all in the Finishing Touches

Cutlery

The little details and finishing touches make all the difference. Think about the cutlery you’re using - a set of beautiful bamboo cutlery alongside a humble white plate instantly lifts it or fun coloured cutlery is always a winner in the garden.

Napkins & Napkin Holders

Think about your napkins and napkin holders. We love a soft scallop-edged napkin. At Maison Margaux, we also offer a bespoke service where we can embroider your napkins in any design, so you could initial your guest names onto each one or choose a motif personal to you so you can keep it forever.

Vases & Flowers

Use little small vases and fill them with wild flowers from your garden (if you’re lucky to have them!), or buy seasonal flowers from your local florist. Keep the arrangements loose but don’t be afraid to use lots of little vases all the way along the centre of the table. They don’t need to match - you can use little jugs and jars too for an eclectic look. Bringing the florals and a bit of the garden onto the table brings everything together so beautifully.

Home House Members can enjoy 10% off exquisite tableware at Maison Margaux until May 31st with the code EASTER23.

The Perfect Easter Table

Home House Presents: It’s My House!

We are thrilled to present an exciting new group exhibition at Home House curated by @aspaceforart_com, in collaboration with @cura_art_ and @offshoot_arts.

As humans we have collected objects throughout our existence as functional apparatus, for the pursuit of knowledge, as status symbols and to surround ourselves with beauty, but also as sentimental mementos and to feel a part of the wider human experience through the creative skill of others. The objects within our homes reflect our personality, interests and storytelling about our lives, selected and positioned with intent.

This immersive exhibition uses Home House’s former life as a domestic space, creating a united “house” and cultural hub for inspiration, debate and sanctuary, surrounded by the joy that artistry brings. Many of the artists included in this series are inspired by what ‘Home’ means to them and navigate that theme in multiple ways. The significance of our homes as havens has become even more poignant over the last few years. Global events have widely illustrated disparity and although a house is a safe haven for some, it is not for others.

All artworks are for sale whilst on display at Home House. For more information, please contact info@aspaceforart.com.

Meet The Artists

DAWN BECKLES @dawn_beckles

Interpretation of the classic still life is unparalleled in Beckles’ use of vibrant colour and contemporary settings depicted alongside her reoccurring subject matter – the exotic flora inspired by her native Barbados. A mixed media artist specialising in combining painting, collage and screen-printing, Beckles frequently parallels found images of man-made beauty with those of the natural world. It is in her paintings that one will find high fashion, bespoke interiors juxtaposed with orchids and birds of paradise painted from her private collection. The philosophy underlying Beckles’ body of work is to celebrate the intimate relationship between an item/interior and its owner by illuminating the context in which it is presented. Her process, whether constructing an elaborately furnished room-scape or the study of an austere clay pot draped with Crocosmia. In her painting Beckles invites the viewer to learn more about the home owner as she gets to know them.

ALEXANDRA BARAITSER @abaraitser

Alexandra Baraitser is a London and Cambridge based artist and curator. Her paintings are a celebration of contemporary design and architecture and are based on images she selects from vintage magazines. Through painting she hopes to invite discussion of the relationship between ‘high art’ abstraction and iconic design. She curated Then and Now at Terrace Gallery (2020), ACID at The Cello Factory (2020) and This instead of That at Art House 1 Gallery (2019). Baraitser’s work was selected for the ArtCan Open, (2018) and the Cambridge Show, Kettle’s Yard (2019). In 2002 she was awarded an Arts Council England, and Commissions East Arts Awards for mentoring with Rachel Thomas, now Curator of The Hayward Gallery. She is the founder and director of the Bricklayers Brunch Artists Network and has been represented by Hirschl Contemporary Art, Paton Gallery and Mark Jason Gallery.

FERREN GIPSON @ferrengipson

Ferren Gipson is an art historian, writer, and presenter based in London. She is the author of The Ultimate Art Museum and Women’s Work, hosts the Art Matters podcast, and is a doctoral researcher at SOAS, University of London. Ferren is a researcher and advocate for art education. Her research areas include modern Chinese art history and topics exploring the crossover between pop culture and art. Her work can be found across mediums, including books, articles, interviews, and 68 episodes of the popular visual arts podcast Art Matters.

Panton’s Girl’ by Alexandra Baraitser
32 Home House Home House Presents: It’s My House!

Bursting with colour and energy, Elizabeth Power’s paintings exude a warmth and vibrancy. Based in St Leonard’s on Sea, Power’s work has a colour palette rich in coral pinks, forest greens and cool blues. She draws inspiration from colourists such as Matisse, Hockney, Milton Avery and Tal R. Often capturing scenes of daily life or stilllife compositions, Power’s loose and intuitive brushwork and confident colour juxtapositions brings a fresh interpretation of the genre.

Ptolemy Mann creates hand-dyed and woven artworks that have become the basis for a modern-day Bauhaus philosophy of art-making underpinned with intelligent colour theory. Her time-consuming and unique approach has evolved over a twenty-five-year period. Exquisite dynamics of colour move across their fine surface, creating a painterly sweep. The term ‘Chromatic Minimalism’ has been applied to her work, and Abstract Expressionism and architecture heavily influence her. In recent years she has been making huge gestural paintings on watercolour paper and canvas exploring the relationship between thread and pigment. Mann is interested in the relationships between colours and their affective potential. For her, painting is an expression of the material world. Optical effects and natural phenomena inspire her to explore the possibilities of her chosen materials: dye, thread, paper, paint and time. Through their rapid and/or laborious application she creates a multi-layered meditation on light and colour. Mann makes large-scale, emotional works that express a deep sense of craftsmanship and precision through an abstract narrative.

HORMAZD NARIELWALLA @narielwalla

Hormazd Narielwalla work s across a number of artistic disciplines including printmaking, sculpture and artist’s books but he is best know for his intricate paper collages and assemblages, which are originated on the surfaces of antique, vintage and bespoke tailoring patterns. He views these graphic templates as “beautiful abstractions of the human body, that carry with them not only an outline of a garment but also a representation of the individual that wore it’. He reinterprets the longdiscarded patterns, overlaying their delicate geometries with forms of his own, to express ideas about identity, memory, migration and diaspora. Born in India he moved to the UK in 2003 to study as a fashion designer. Narielwalla’s practice is influenced by cross-cultural perceptions he explores in a number of ways.

LYLE PERKINS @lyleaperkins

Lyle Perkins cites chance and beauty as being the two recurring elements in his work, and how they both intersect dictates the outcome of each piece. Through varied subject matter, the paintings frame everyday reality in an uncanny way. The compositions are derived from photographs that are often reconfigured and altered until the resulting image closes in on both the original fixation and the imminent painting. Many of the scenes are found during walks between home and studio, or in other prosaic moments. The mundane and the familiar are presented in a kind of saturated, hyper-reality, that creates a sense of ambiguity, enigma and an implied narrative.

PIA PACK @piapack

Pia Pack’s work examines motherhood and domestic life through the social interactions around the kitchen table. Her large-scale paintings explore familiar patterns and shapes, using repetition and overlapping, to create tension and looseness across the canvas. Her paintings express notions of conviviality and unity and ultimately explore the poignancy of human relationships. “Engagement with family life, social connectivity, meals shared across the table, daily patterns that are in fact unpredictable, fresh ideas to solve old problems, ever changing yet so familiar, this is my life. The use of modernist flatness and form mixed with the influence of P&D Movement patterning, formal precision alongside rhythm, it’s all in the balance in the realm of abstraction.” - Pia

Grand Designs

Reinventing House 21 with Russell Sage Studios

Interior designer Russell Sage has taken no. 21 Portman Square back to the club’s famously neoclassical roots.

Under the direction of acclaimed designer Russell Sage, the interiors of No.21 have been dramatically reinvented to honour the club’s historical and colourful past, taking inspiration from the notorious Countess of Home’s wildly lavish parties and such hedonistic behaviour that broke the harmony of Georgian Society life. Adorned with contemporary art, lavish furnishings and glamorous lighting, each room embodies the House’s history as Elizabeth the Countess of Home’s personal playground, revealing untold stories in every corner.

Members and guests can enjoy a creative menu of seriously good small plates and exquisite cocktails influenced by the Countess of Home’s voyages across the globe, alongside late-night DJ’s and an exciting line up of regular entertainment designed to evoke a sense of freedom.

About Russell Sage Studios

Established in 2005, Russell Sage Studio comprises a thriving team of 40 dedicated interior designers, FF&E designers, planners, restorers and art and antiques experts. Since inception, the studio has built a solid reputation for creating unique interior designs for five star hotels, exclusive members’ clubs, premium restaurants, luxury bars and private residences around the world.

In 1773, James Wyatt was commissioned by Elizabeth, Countess of Home, to design and build a sophisticated palace purely for enjoyment and entertainment. Unfortunately for Wyatt, he was sacked, and in 1775 his competitor Robert Adam was appointed to complete the interiors of the house in the sumptuous Neo-Classical style. Today, No 20 Portman Square is acknowledged as Adam’s finest surviving London town house.

Russell Sage Studio prides itself on developing a bespoke design that is perfect for each client, designing a space that is timeless, beautiful, functional and durable, while paying close attention to the smaller details, both front and back of house, that results in the most thrilling and sumptuous interiors.

For Russell Sage Studio’s most recent design project for Home House, the team understood that only a bespoke, opulent interior made with care, craft and skill would do.

38 Home House Reinventing House 21

Home House Magazine catches up with the design team behind the reimagined House 21, to give insight into crafting a bespoke space that seamlessly combines 18th century Georgian heritage with 21st century style.

How does Russell Sage Studio pride itself on its bespoke work?

Russell Sage Studio has a long tradition of working closely with bespoke projects and craftspeople, as well as collaborations with artists. It always makes projects more exciting to have added layers of creativity and craftsmanship as part of the overall design.

Tell us about the House 21 project; how did Russell Sage Studio get involved?

We were lucky to have worked with Home House collection on various projects before, including the restaurant upgrade, as well as overseeing the complete design of Home Grown. The team thought of us for the House 21 project as we were already well connected to the business and understood the overall ethos.

Was it challenging to work with a building with such a rich history?

There were no challenges, just a huge love for the House having been to many parties and events there over the last 20 years. This was our opportunity to add to its history in a creative and energetic way, which compliments both Home House and Home Grown.

40 Home House Reinventing House 21

The interior owes so much to the Georgian period it was founded during; how did you go about updating the space?

I always say, ‘Roll with the architecture’. We were inspired by the character and the history, and our colour palettes were rooted in this era, before thinking about the proportions of the space and how that affects the furniture we put in it. Paying homage to the Countess and the hedonistic behaviour of Georgian society, we injected colour with bright finishes and playful objects.

What are some of your favourite aspects of House 21 now that it is finished?

I love the grandfather clock bar! I had this idea for a while where I wanted to make a bar out of grandfather clocks, and House 21 was the perfect spot with its fantastic high ceilings, so clocks suddenly celebrated the architecture as well as being of the correct era.

What has the feedback been like from members and visitors?

It’s always a pleasure to get any feedback. Mostly we are just trying to make inspiring and engaging spaces for guests and we’ve been pleased that so many members have taken to the space.

You have worked with a few members’ clubs; how did Home House stand out?

Home House is special as it has a remarkable history and a fantastic, energetic membership which really brings the building alive. The architecture is inspiring and the people are creative, which is just perfect.

What aspect of this project is a personal highlight?

I love the secret dance floor which can fill the room with colourful lights on party nights. At the flick of a switch, the room can become party central!

Meet The Family

What’s the best thing about your role at Home House?

House 21 is my baby! To me it’s the gem of Home House and offers our Members a space for every kind of mood. It’s the antidote to the busy working day - sophisticated, without taking itself too seriously. It’s hard to choose but I would say what I love most is building connections with our community and developing the team. These my two biggest loves. Watching the team build friendships with Members and seeing them flourish are always my proudest moments.

Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary... Here’s to another 10 years?

Absolutely. It’s been a wild ride and every day is completely different which I love. We have dozens of team members who have been with the club for over ten years and some for over twenty years, which I think says a lot about what a special place it is.

What’s new at House 21 for 2023?

Serving up seriously good small plates and signature cocktails alongside late-night DJs and lively members events, the menu takes inspiration from the House’s long history of welcomed international guests and the Countess of Home’s voyages across the globe. Discover fresh dishes such as the Tuna and Salmon Sashimi, California roll with salmon, avocado and caviar and stirfried bok choy. M embers and guests can enjoy an exciting line up of regular entertainment designed to evoke a sense of freedom, from our monthly Cocktail Club to Drag Bingo with Grace Shush and Live Band Karaoke. Your favourite daytime to playtime hideaway at the House, v isit for your mid-morning espresso, enjoy delicious Bento Boxes for a light lunch and settle in for dinner and dancing under the chandeliers.

We caught up with our favourite party starter and the face of House 21 about what’s new for 2023.

How did you get into the hospitality industry?

My family have always run pizzerias, trattorias and bars, so it’s in my blood. My introduction to the world of hospitality was working at my Father’s bar in Rome before going on to run it. In my spare time I would compete in freestyle bartender competitions across the world!

We’re really excited to have just opened the House Lounge and Bar for lunch during the week. It’s something we’ve been planning for a long time and makes sense, each of the spaces are perfect for working away during the day but then switching off with a cocktail. We’ve recently welcomed a new Sushi Chef and have just launched a brand new Japanese menu which our Members are loving! Chef has designed an incredible lunchtime Bento Box to bring a unique modern Japanese dining experience to the Club. This year there’s a huge focus on entertainment and performances, so we’re currently planning lots of exciting events. Watch this space!

If you had to choose one dish on the menu, what would you recommend?

My favourite dish on the menu right now is without doubt the Miso cod with stem ginger and sesame, and my favourite cocktail would have to be the classic Espresso Martini. You won’t find a better one in London!

Meet Dawit Haile, Gym Manager, Personal Trainer and everyone’s favourite Running Coach

Gym Manager Dawit has been part of the Home House family for over 15 years and originally joined as an ambitious Gym Assistant. We caught up with him about his own personal fitness journey and what it’s like to work at Marylebone’s best-kept secret...

Tell us about how you first became interested in fitness and well-being?

Iwas born and raised in a rural village in Eritrea, East Africa. Growing up in an open space and being from a farming family, everything we did was done manually and involved a lot of physical activity. Transportation was very limited as well, so walking long distances to and from destinations was a regular occurrence. As children we would play lots of outdoor sports such as Shauki, which is very similar to American baseball but with the ball being made up of old fabric, tightly bound together. Mohammed Ali was also a huge role model to me. His dedication to boxing and achievements on the world stage were incredible, yet still he remained humble. That always inspired me.

Nstled within the heart of Marylebone, the fully equipped gym at Home House is a subterranean haven for Members and bedroom guests alike. Located in the basement under the House Bar and Lounge, the boutique gym offers stateof-the-art equipment, in-house personal trainers and weekly classes along a sauna, steam room and relaxation room. With a Full Membership, Members can enjoy the schedule of complimentary workouts throughout the week from running club, yoga and tabata to pilates and strength and conditioning classes. Taking over what would have been the servants quarters when the Grade II listed House was originally built in the 18th Century, Members and guests will discover an original Victorian kitchen in the main gym from over 150 years ago.

If you haven’t visited the gym in a while and it’s feeling a little intimidating, book a complimentary induction where we can show you the correct and safe way to use the equipment before completing a body composition analysis and a cardiovascular fitness test. To book, email gym@homehouse.co.uk

What’s the most important advice you can offer someone who would like to improve their fitness?

In terms of fitness advice, I’d say improving fitness comes from different aspects of life. Consider a balanced nutrition plan and approach your training with a full body workout method, i.e. from cardio vascular training to weightlifting – combining these together in a single session can bring improved results. But most importantly, enjoy what you do, push yourself within your own limits, keep a positive state of mind, and get great results to stay fitter and healthier for longer.

What’s new at the Gym for 2023?

We’re very pleased to welcome a new Fitness Coach to the team and wishing a very warm welcome to Sherry. Coming up, we’ll soon be introducing our new House Nutritionist who will be able to advise on optimising your nutrition. Watch this space. We’ve recently added a range of new classes to the schedule including an invigorating and mindful lunchtime yoga class with Nicola to improve flexibility and strength, Legs, Bums and Tums with Sherry and an intensive Metabolic Conditioning class with Kieran to increase lean muscle mass and improve the efficiency of the body. Plus, Members and guests can join one of our trainers each month in the Front Parlour and Eating Room each month for a weekend class followed by a team brunch.

Gone Rogue’s founder, Kim Shaylor explains why she’s shaking up the art world for the better.

Kim Shaylor, Giulia Caruso, Todd Lamming at ME London by Vitalij Sidorovic

How did you become involved in the art world?

It all began with a background in print and then a business venture called The House of Artists with an artist called Ben Allen. We created large wall murals in spaces and worked with lots of different artists. I discovered that not only were many artists struggling to be seen, but that they had huge amounts of work that was lying around in storage or in their studios, never seeing the light of day. It made me realise that there must be more spaces to show art than just galleries, and maybe other ways of doing it so I thought I would give it a go and see what happened!

Tell us more about Gone Rogue and what you do?

After the realisation that there are way more talented artists than there are galleries to show their work, I discovered that there was a huge opportunity to find spaces to exhibit their work and make a difference to those environments and the artists work getting acknowledged. It’s a win-win: the hotels get to showcase new art to their guests and visitors, and the artist has the opportunity to showcase their art to a constantly changing audience. The idea started with ME London Hotel about four years ago and from there it grew and we now have curated art shows in Barcelona, Ibiza, Dubai and have lots more lined up for 2023. In 2021, the wonderful Todd Lamming joined me on this Gone Rogue journey and we are planning on shaking things up and helping artists that are under-represented to be seen.

Why is art so important to humans?

Art has so many different levels. People’s reasons for buying art can be as simple as it fits into a certain space, but most of the time people really connect with a piece of art and they want to be inspired by it daily or reminded of a certain emotion when they look at it. From an artist point of view, of course this is their everything – often the only way they can envisage living a healthy, happy life is by creating art. So many artists I work with don’t even really enjoy the selling and marketing aspect, which is why I love to come in and help with that part of their journey. They would be happiest just creating new artworks.

Do you have any show recommendations?

Of course! There are so many great art shows and the more you see, the more you understand what you love and what moves you. The Other Art Fair is always a good one to go to as you get to see such a range of artists. There is a great app called Art Rabbit which you can search all art shows large or small in your area. You never know what you will come across. Kew Gardens always have great art exhibits on and outside of London, Hauser & Wirth in Somerset is a stunning art gallery that is well worth a visit. But also just walking around the streets of London is an incredible free art show. The streets of Shoreditch, for example, are surrounded by spaces celebrating local artists and paying them to display street art, which is awesome.

What have been your highlights so far?

The highlights aren’t always the big wow moments that you would think. Our collaboration with McLaren and Nat Bowen at ME Dubai Hotel was an unforgettable experience but I also really love the small interactions that we have created between a buyer and an artist or a guest and an exhibition that they have seen. Some people have such a strong connection to art that they simply can’t walk away from it. Other highlights are doing ‘rogue’ things like doing a pop up show with Sophie Tea at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza which we organised in just two days whilst I was on a family holiday. I love to do things that happen organically and try not to force things too much – I think they’re always the best experiences. An artist called Saki produced a brand new collection of work that we exhibited at ME London; the journey that she went on creating it was super emotional and personal and being a part of that for both myself and Todd was a real privilege and something we will cherish for a long time. And then most recently, we did a show with Maxim from the Prodigy and it was such a great event, with ballerinas in balaclavas dancing to music. We will be doing some more events with him this year so keep an eye out for the details @gonerogueldn

How has the art world changed after the experience of the Pandemic?

It’s been both good and bad. For curators and galleries it was a tough time whilst everything closed, but for a lot of artists it was a real opportunity to stop, think and pivot their style and adapt to a new way of selling and growth. I know a lot of artists that took the time to engage with their audience on social media and engage with their buyers directly, which was a great time for them. I think the freedom they felt to do things without a gallery or manager was a really good thing. Disruption needed to happen. Now we have the best of both worlds, people want to be out at exhibitions, surrounded by the art and other people, sharing space with other humans.

Artwork by Bonnie & Clyde

Do you have a favourite work of art you keep coming back to?

This is a really tough one to answer because I have bought many artworks for many reasons. I have an amazing piece by Bonnie and Clyde called Everybody Loves The Sunshine that reminds me of an amazing time of my life when I lived in L.A. Another piece called Norms by Gerry Buxton, I like for the same reason. I have a large collection of Ben Allen’s work, and love to try and collect a piece from all artists that I work with. I have a pair of custom painted Nikes from Nat Bowen that I will treasure. I have a skate deck by Callum Eaton who would be my one to watch recommendation for 2023. He is incredible - he is a realism artist that paints normal every day objects like cash machines and a stick of French bread. You have to really see his work to appreciate the skill.

What do you have coming up in 2023 and beyond?

We are doing our first full hotel curation for the opening of the Mondrian Ibiza this summer and an incredible solo show with Sophie Derrick at ME London. A new collaboration with a co work space in Leeds, The Collective which is great to be showcasing artists around the UK. We are trying to focus outside of London in the UK and now have art in spaces in Somerset and Wiltshire also. With shows in Dubai, Ibiza and LA pending.

What’s in a name? When it comes to

suites at Home House

Home House began in 1773 when George III’s architect, James Wyatt, was commissioned by Elizabeth, Countess of Home, to build a sophisticated ‘Pavilion’ designed purely for enjoyment and entertainment at N° 20 Portman Square. The Countess, aptly known as ‘The Queen of Hell’, was in her late 60s, twice widowed, childless – and very rich.

In 1775, Wyatt was sacked from the project and his competitor Robert Adam, who was one of the most celebrated architects of his time, was appointed to complete the interior of the house in the sumptuous Neo-Classical style. Today, N° 20 Portman Square is acknowledged as Adam’s finest surviving London town house, and although Home House’s breathtaking Imperial Staircase, which rises through the entire height of the house to a glass dome, may be what immediately grabs your attention once through the doors, the enchanting bedrooms really need to be seen to be believed.

Each of the 23 luxurious bedrooms and suites have a unique story to tell, with exquisite features from hand-painted silk wallpaper to baths made for royalty, and shimmering gold ceilings. Once you step foot into your room for the evening, you will be be transported to a different time and place.

In 1784 after the Countess’ death, Home House was left to her young nephew who was still a schoolboy at the time, and so the House was subsequently let to tenants including the French Ambassador, the Duke of Atholl and Duke of Newcastle, as well as Earl Grey (of tea fame) amongst many others. All of the bedrooms have since been named in honour of the characters that once called the House their home.

Duke of Newcastle

One of the most impressive and spacious rooms is the Duke of Newcastle Suite, named after the 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne, Henry Pelham-Clinton. A British nobleman and politician who played a leading part in British politics in the late 1820s and early 1830s, Pelham-Clinton embarked upon life with many personal advantages and with a considerable fortune. He married Georgiana Elizabeth, the heiress of Edward Miller Mundy of Shipley, Derbyshire,

served as Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire from 1809 to 1839, and was also Steward of Sherwood Forest and of Folewood Park. In 1812, he was made a Knight of the Garter. Not everything was plain sailing though, and he certainly ruffled a few feathers along his way. He was a vehement opponent of electoral reform, and this stance led to attacks on his property during the Reform Bill Riots of 1831. Nottingham Castle was burnt to the ground and his residences at Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire and Portman Square, London also had to be fortified against a mob.

Just as well that he had Home House to retreat to, where he lived between 1820 and 1861. Featuring some of the Duke’s original belongings, the Duke of Newcaslte Suite comprises of an elegant lounge perfect for drinks parties, a master bedroom and bathroom and boasts views overlooking Portman Square through no fewer than four impressive Georgian sash windows. Lined with exquisite dark green wallpaper, the bedroom is flooded with natural light and features the Duke’s actual mirror, together with a stunning half tester super kingsize bed. Little touches like the ornate yet understated chandelier, the heavy red and gold drapes in the walkway, large orignal fireplaces and the black and white paintings will take you back to a time gone by.

Duke of Newcastle

Located on the third floor of House No. 20, the Duke of Atholl suite is something to behold and features rich mahogany furniture and the most resplendent king-size bed. If you do manage to extract yourself from the bed’s all-embracing grasp, the bathtub may present you with yet another challenge.

The bright and the elegant bathroom features a bath originally made for His Highness Say Aji Rao III, Maharajah Gaekwad of Baroda (18631939). With a separate living area, the room boasts views overlooking Portman Square and to top its splendour, it’s the only suite that includes three unique, decorative fireplaces within its walls.

Named after John Murray, the 4th Duke of Atholl and Scottish peer. In 1786 he was created Baron Murray, of Stanley in the County of Gloucester, and Earl Strange in the Peerage of Great Britain, which gave him an automatic seat in the House of Lords. He later served as LordLieutenant of Perthshire from 1794 to 1830 and was sworn of the Privy Council in 1797. In 1800 he was made a Knight of the Thistle, and in 1793 was appointed Captain-General and Governor in Chief of the Isle of Man. He succeeded his Mother in the barony of Strange in 1805 and was also Grand Master of the Ancient Grand Lodge of England from 1775 until 1781 and again from 1791 until 1812.

Interestingly, he introduced the Japanese Larch into Britain, planting the trees at Dunkeld, where they hybridised with the first European Larch in Britain, planted by his uncle, the second Duke, which gave rise to the Dunkeld Larch.

The Lady Islington suite is particualry special and takes its name from one of the pioneering lady interior decorators of the inter-war years, who was responsible for redecorating much of Home House during the 1920’s. Overlooking the garden on the second floor of House No. 20, the suite features an impressive mahogany four-poster bed and houses an extraordinary red marble bathroom.

Designed in 1922 by the eccentric cavalry officer, Marchese Piero Malacrida, the deep red marble comes from the same stone as the

star inlaid in the floor in the centre of the dome in St Paul’s Cathedral. During the Second World War, an incendiary bomb fell through the light well and fortunately, it failed to detonate though the cracks where it landed are still evident today and a reminder of a bit of luck!
