I offered to make her one, but with my own design & style. Even with little metalworking experience, I imported my sketch and cut out the metal table - all in one piece and with no other materials. The table came out just how I imagined! Plus, several people want to buy my table design. Now I can make my ideas into unique & profitable projects using the PlasmaCAM ®!” -Dennis Cordova, Amateur Metalworker

Are You Ready to Mobilize Your Business? The Mobile-Preneur Home Business Sector Is Booming Let’s review options. For those of you who are current home business owners, ‘going mobile’ is an effective means to diversify an existing business. Hitting the road is a logical extension of what you are already doing, allowing you to augment your business offerings and provide a greater level of service to customers. For those of you yet to start a home business, going mobile is an exciting career choice, one that offers greater work flexibility. Let’s dive in!

“ Mobile businesses are a perfect fit for the increasingly high-tech and online businesses opening up for home biz entrepreneurs. Why Go Mobile? For starters, mobile businesses usually receive greater tax benefits. Travel costs incurred while operating a mobile business can provide deductions. In addition, costs for insurance, repairs, parking, tolls, car washes, etc., may offer additional deductions. Another benefit is that you can launch a mobile business on a part-time basis while holding onto your day job. If your employer allows you to work flexible hours, get started as early as possible each day. This frees you up to perform mobile work later in the afternoon, on the way home from work. This can also make a portion of those travel expenses business expenses. Going mobile also gives you the unique opportunity to interact with customers on a more personal level. In a world where you conduct so much communication by email and text, it’s nice to be able to shake a customer’s hand and look them in the eye. Finally, mobile businesses are a perfect fit for the increasingly high-tech and online businesses opening up for home biz entrepreneurs. Most can be operated anywhere at one’s convenience as a mobile-preneur! See the mobile businesses listing in this issue. Get Behind the Mobile Wheel If you already operate a home-based business, transitioning into a mobile operation is easy. Evaluate your business plan and look for new ways to expand your current service(s) or start up a new related service. As you already have a business running, transition costs are less than starting up from scratch. Build a New Business Another option is to start a mobile business from scratch. This is the least costly method of entering a mobile market, but risks are higher. Your decisions directly influence business startup success. You don’t have the guidance and support from an experienced company, such as a business opportunity or franchise. Configuring a van, pickup truck, or automobile so that you can work away from home is complex work. Many mobile businesses require you to transport some kind of equipment to your client’s location. Seek out professional help for such vehicle conversions. Invest in a Business Opportunity Because of higher levels of expertise, equipment, and investment for many mobile businesses, another good alternative is to work with a company that offers a business opportunity package. Many such packages make you a licensee, dealer, or distributor. Most companies provide full training, and can include support in the forms of financial, marketing, technical, sales, and online. Buy into a Franchise Home-based franchises are also excellent mobile business options. Franchises provide the highest levels of training, products, marketing support, home office support, and assistance with equipment configuration. This results in higher investment levels and more company restrictions. Many van-based businesses are franchise operations, as these are expensive and complex mobile operations. So get mobile! Your mobile-preneur options are wide open.

lthough the futuristic, technology-driven and automated world shown in the 1960s American animated sitcom The Jetsons may have seemed light years away at the time, many of its revolutionary products and processes have come to fruition. From what seemed like whimsical inventions like hovercrafts, to automated appliances and elaborate talking robots, these “space age” devices and conveniences are part of today’s world. As technology continues to evolve and change, we as global citizens have increasingly more ways to connect, shop, eat, live and work in virtual and mobile-connected ways. Consequently, the variety and sheer number of mobile business opportunities out there have given rise to a new crop of savvy global entrepreneurs. Just perform a quick search online and you’ll find everything from pet grooming and dog walking services, to residential and commercial cleaning, catering and food trucks, professional organizing, personal shopping and moving services all offered by, and available to, people on the go. If you’ve already opened a mobile-based business, or are thinking about starting one, the future success of your enterprise must be skillfully linked to technology in order to meet the demands of the “I want it yesterday” world we live in. The only limit is your imagination. Before Posting Your Digital “Signage” — Research, Research, Research! Just like the oft repeated real estate industry adage, “Location, Location, Location”, “Research, Research, Research” is the first step in starting any mobile business. Before letting people know about you, you need to know about them by creating a clearly defined target audience to whom you will be marketing your product and/or services. Although “I want everyone to know about my company” may seem like the best goal for brand awareness, it is not a good strategy for defining your target market. In fact, even if you narrow down your target market to, for example, stayat-home mothers, students or amateur athletes, these targets are not specific enough. You have to carefully and specifically identify a niche market(s) — an important factor that will play a significant role in the success or failure of your business. In Defining your Target Market, by Mandy Porta

Research is the first step toward starting any mobile business.

for Inc.com, even small businesses can effectively compete with large companies by targeting a niche market. “Targeting a specific market does not mean that you are excluding people who do not fit your criteria,” wrote Porta. “Rather, target marketing allows you to focus your marketing dollars and brand message on a specific market that is more likely to buy from you than other markets. This is a much more affordable, efficient, and effective way to reach potential clients and generate business.”

If your mobile “ business is operated internationally, you may be required to document it in more than one foreign city or country.

Take the example of a women’s apparel line. Your obvious customers are going to be women, but there are several kinds of women that you can target — based on age, income level, sizes offered, location in the world (which may be tied to the weather), and so forth. And within each of those, you can funnel it down even further to identify other more specific targets/ target markets, like the 18-to-35 and/or baby

boomer crowds within the age niche. Other specific niche areas to consider are lifestyle, educational level, values, occupation, interests or hobbies, religious beliefs, and ethnicity, just to name a few, depending on the product and/ or service you have to offer. If you already have an established mobile business, use your analytics reporting to identify your customer demographics. This will give you insights into the gender, age, geographic location, and more about your customers, which could help identify others that may want what you have to offer. And don’t forget to look at what, to date, sells best. Are they the least expensive or most expensive items or services? Does there appear to be a specific time of year that certain items sell or that customers come to you for service? Considerations like these may also provide insights into your target market. Following these steps to carefully research and identify your target market will go a long way in helping you speak to those potential customers, while also maximizing your overall outreach efforts, marketing dollars, and of course, the all-important Return on Investment (ROI). Get Your Mobile Up and Runnin’ Even though you will be working on the road, there are several “stationary details” linked to a physical address or some other mailing address. Assuming you have already established your company name and type (i.e. Inc., LLC, S Corp, LTD, DBA, etc.) and identification or other reference number for government tax purposes (we Continued on page 12

you and your potential customers. Therefore, you must make a good first impression.

recommend consulting an attorney or tax professional for these items), depending on your state of legal residence you may be required to obtain certain city and/or state business permits and licenses, and adhere to certain codes when on the road.

Business, economics and personal finance writer Andrew Moran emphasizes that among the numerous important website aspects to consider, including choosing the right hosting platform, considering the overall design, look and feel, developing original content and adopting the right call-to-action, or CTA, making your website mobile responsive is essential.

Take the example of a restaurant that also has a food truck. Your restaurant license will cover a specific location, city and county codes, etc., for its operation. But once the food truck starts its engine, there may be other regulations or restrictions that apply, such as having a separate mobile permit or license, whether the truck can be parked on public or private property, insurance requirements, and so forth. These are things you need to consider beforehand to ensure compliance anywhere you plan to take your mobile business. The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers a wealth of helpful information on a wide array of topics relevant to mobile businesses. If your mobile business is operated internationally, you may be required to document it in more than one foreign city or country. For example, a primarily mobile, global Direct Selling company with a physical office in more than one country may have to complete a series of foreign office

Use analytics reporting to identify your customer demographics.

According to some industry reports, mobile visitors often represent the highest percentage of total visitors to a company’s website. Add to that estimates of close to 5 billion worldwide mobile phone users by 2019, and it’s easy to see why your website must be designed (or redesigned, if necessary) to attract and retain mobile customers in the digital age.

Once you’ve got all of the “legalese” taken care of, your next significant focus needs to be on your website.

Communication Is Key So, your virtual door is open, the digital welcome mat is out, and your website is ready to handle the throngs of customers beating a path to your cyberspace porthole. What you need now is to provide continual direction how and where to get there. That’s where social media comes into play.

Whether already up and running or you are just getting started, remember that your website is, in many instances, the first interaction between

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tencent QQ (more popularly known as QQ), Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, Baidu Tieba (also known as Postbar)

or other regulatory agency incorporation or filing documents.

LinkedIn, YouTube, Viber, Taringa, Vimeo, Google+… These are just a few of the most popular and widely utilized social media channels used globally by businesses to communicate with, and advertise to, current and potential customers.

Going from Mobile-Friendly to “Mobile-First” As the first Direct Selling company with its marketing plan built on blockchain, we here at MyTravelBiz™ (MTB) understand the importance of continued innovation and cutting-edge technology in today’s ever-changing world.

You and/or your parents may have grown up in the age of face-to-face interactions where sales were confirmed with a strong handshake. These types of transactions still maintain their tangible, personal-touch value. Nevertheless, building a strong social media presence is an important, necessary, and dare we say almost priceless step in nurturing your business — particularly a mobile one — in order to make and foster a strong, relevant and consistent brand identity for your products and/or services with people located all over in the world.

Our Founder and President, Atif Kamran, and Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Geraldine Aquino, have dedicated their careers to this ideal, going to great lengths to build not only mobile-friendly, but “Mobile-First” platforms to generate a turnkey business opportunity whereby a Representative can start and grow their business anywhere around the world.

“Social media has become an essential tool in the business world because its ability to reach current and potential customers is unparalleled by any other marketing tool,” writes Mariliza Karrera with CareerAddict. “… Making it easy for people to follow you on social networking platforms is a surefire way to build up an audience. Adding buttons or social media badges to your websites will ensure that your accounts are front and centre. … Sharing can also help promote your social media presence.”

Develop a user-friendly website.

Other social media tips Karrera offers include having a clearly defined strategy as to what you want your social media presence to achieve and in what time span, creating multiple social media accounts across different platforms to help you reach a wider audience, using social media management software like Hootsuite or Sprout Social to allow for scalability as well as adaptability, and being selective about what and where you share your content, just to name a few.

“There are many ways to establish a strong mobile business and create an excellent user experience for your customers across the various devices and communication channels they use,” explained Aquino. “We chose to marry blockchain — the digital ledger where an encoded transaction is permanently stored across a network of computers and safely encoded in real time — with Travel and Direct Selling on an innovative patent-pending platform to offer the best travel deals to customers.” Kamran added, “By doing so, in conjunction with extensive utilization of our sophisticated, Continued on page 14

people-based data and tools, we created a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the way Direct Selling works. Our continuing innovation is a testament to the work to reach our goal to offer our valued customers a full, mobile-based experience.” Blockchain technology is just one way that enterprises today can run their businesses on a global, mobile scale. Other technology-focused tools include finding the best services for your particular needs, working with vendors with high levels of mobile interfaces, applying advanced transaction encryption (if not using blockchain), and participation in community groups in the tech space to swap questions and ideas about the latest and greatest mobile business features and innovations. Another tool that continues to garner a great deal of interest and business adoption is the creation of your own mobile app. It is estimated that approximately 80-90% of internet users do so on mobile devices, and that in the U.S. alone consumers spend close to five hours a day on those devices, with 92% of that time spent on apps! One of the biggest benefits of having your own mobile app is the ability to expand your market

globally, without making a major financial investment. Other significant dividends include helping your business stay visible, improving the customer experience, using it for free promotion, integration with all of your business channels, increased sales, and staying ahead of your competitors without an app.

Because you “ and/or your business is always on the move, a virtual assistant can handle all aspects of your business when you are unavailable.

“In addition to our upcoming ‘mile markers’ where we will be actively launching each one of our platforms in an app version, we are in the process of fully optimizing all of our webbased resources for mobile,” Aquino said. “That represents a significant benefit to both our customers and mobile Entrepreneurs, and among

the things we are proud to say continue to make MyTravelBiz one of the most successful global Direct Selling companies in the world.” Brian Palmer, CEO of Krato, a company that helps direct selling industry founders and their sales teams connect with their distributors, hostesses and customers more conveniently, said that a direct selling app can drastically increase your retention of direct sellers. “A lot of direct selling companies now use apps to conduct business. … Using an app lets direct sellers be more visible and available to distributors and customers alike.” As you can easily see, a steadfast commitment to operating “Mobile-First,” even if you have a brick and mortar location(s), will continue to pave the way for the future innovation and success of your business. Make Sure You Have the Right Tools for the Trade The good news is there are only three basics tools needed to support your business — whether a solopreneur or as part of a multi-employee company — as a mobile road warrior: a laptop computer, cell phone, and good Wi-Fi and internet connection. The in-between details, however, can make or break your ability to run that business effectively while on the go. Before going out and purchasing or upgrading a laptop, it’s important to narrow down exactly what you need for your mobile office. Aspects to take into consideration include choosing the right laptop design, i.e. traditional or hybrid, the important specs (CPU, memory and storage, and battery life), and the operating system. Regarding the latter, “Unless you're able to spend at least $1,300 per laptop, you'll be choosing between a Chrome OS and a Windows OS, but there are three primary operating systems [Apple OS X, Windows OS, and Chrome OS], and you should know the difference,” said Mona Bushnell, B2B Tech Writer of Business News Daily. There are also some schools of thought out there that contend it’s possible to run a business entirely from a mobile phone using specifically designated smartphone apps, called Micro Apps. In some cases entrepreneurs, particularly small to mid-size business owners, have found it much easier to operate via these apps than on traditional desktop software. By funneling a wide range of information needed to run a business, such as marketing dashboards, report spreadsheets, sales leads, and invoices typically garnered by searching through a handful of software programs and backend systems, these apps decrease the energy and time spent,

is always the chance that your information is not secure, and somebody can see your private information. But your smartphone, laptop and other digital devices can also serve as secure Wi-Fi hotspots in a matter of seconds. For most mobile businesses you can obtain this service from your mobile provider. But if you don’t want the expense of adding another hotspot or another account with your provider, you can use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). When installed on your device(s), this software allows you to have a secured connection whenever and wherever you need it. Cultivate a clear social media strategy.

while also increasing productivity — among the most precious commodities of running a business. They key is choosing those that are user-centric over business-centric. Having all of the right mobile equipment is not much use to you if you don’t have access to a good Wi-Fi and internet connection. Almost anywhere you look nowadays — in a coffee shop, hotel lobby, airport, and other places, you can find some form of free, public Wi-Fi and/or internet connection. However, there

Using Communication to Foster Community In addition to using social media channels to communicate with your customers, experts say it is a good idea to integrate some sort of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to nurture those relationships and foster a greater sense of community. HubSpot CRM, Salesforce, Zoho CRM, Infusionsoft, and NetSuite CRM+ are just a few of the most popular programs, each offering a wide variety of ways to stay in contact with customers and track your last touches with them, whether it was via phone, email,

Interview with Mark Wahlberg

Having worked on three films ripped from the headlines (Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor), actor/producer Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg ventured into their first fictional film, the action drama Mile 22 for their latest project. Wahlberg (Boogie Nights, I Heart Huckabees) plays the leader of a paramilitary team who embarks on a dangerous mission to transport a foreign intelligence asset from an American Embassy in Southeast Asia to an airfield for extraction — a distance of 22 miles. The asset (played by Indonesian martial arts star Iko Uwais, the Raid films) has highly classified information, which could avert a widespread terrorist attack. The asset also has several enemies ranging from the local military to the police to a street gang, who all want him dead before he can reach freedom. While this is all going on, the American paramilitary team is being monitored by Russians who have their own reasons for taking out the

Dressed casually in a dark blue pullover and black pants, the laid-back Wahlberg spoke about working again with Berg for Mile 22, preparing for the action and more. Question (Q): Though you’ve previously made three films together with Peter Berg, this is the first time you two have done a fiction film together. Was that the motivating force to do it? What about the politics of this movie? Is it a nod to the brave men of the U.S. military? And what about the Russians as the villains here? Wahlberg (W): I think for Pete and me, after making three films all based on real-life tragedies, it was important for us to go and do something that falls under our idea of fun. This is our idea of a good time. It really is. Q: It’s a great tribute to the men and women

that serve our country when it’s in harm’s way, would you agree? W: As far as the politics of the film, we both share a huge appreciation and affinity for our brave men and women who serve our country. I’ll just leave it at that. Anytime I get an opportunity to thank them, I love to do it. I jumped at the opportunity. In this unique situation, the circumstances you're seeing, people that don’t get the welcome home parade and all those things, they go under the radar unacknowledged, so I

Winning Business with WordPress Husband and Wife Build Six-Figure Income by Putting Their Lifestyle First By Alicia McCarthy

T

hroughout her 20's, Katie Keith dreamed of quitting the rat race and working from home. While she enjoyed her job as project manager, she felt that there must be more to life than working fixed hours for someone else's benefit. After years of discussing business ideas, Katie and her husband Andy decided to take the plunge in 2009. Andy quit his software developer job to focus on starting a business. Katie financed the business and supported it part-time by continuing in her job until they could afford for her to quit too. The couple thought carefully about what type of home-based business to start. Since Andy's skills were in IT, starting a computer-based business was the obvious choice. They settled on web design because this was well-suited to working remotely from home and had a straightforward route to market with minimal financial outlay. Katie marketed the startup web design company

by contacting small local businesses directly. They soon discovered the WordPress platform for building websites and found a gap in the market for specialists. This catapulted the company into a leading WordPress studio. To avoid having to hire staff, Katie recruited a distributed team of freelancers to add capacity. This allowed them to take on more projects and earn a good living. However, Katie felt that a service business wasn't the best way to achieve a more flexible lifestyle. In 2016, they switched to selling niche WordPress plugins, which are small pieces of software that improve people's WordPress websites. Their experience with the WordPress market gave them insider knowledge of what would sell. Within 6 months, the income from plugin sales had overtaken the web design business and they stopped taking on new clients. Katie thoroughly enjoys the company's new product focus. It has opened the door to a more scalable income model, where the same product

can be sold many times without an increase in workload. She loves the fact that she can fit her work around spending time with her 6-yearold daughter. Barn2 Media is now one of the fastest growing WordPress plugin companies, in an industry that now powers over 30% of the web. In three years, Katie intends to have grown her homebased business even further, while still working part-time hours and having the work-life balance she always dreamed of. The Founder of JackRabbit Sells Store and Bets on His Best-Seller By Cameron James

ollowing the sale of his popular NYCbased athletic apparel store, JackRabbit, enterprising entrepreneur Lee Silverman decided to buy its bestselling product: WIN detergent! New York is a city of convenience, where most people have everything delivered, but I noticed many customers making the trek to JackRabbit specifically to purchase WIN repeatedly,” says Silverman.

Silverman operates WIN from his home in Brooklyn, which is a big shift. With JackRabbit, he oversaw a head office of over a dozen people. Working from his home office, he interacts virtually with brand ambassadors and manages manufacturing and marketing teams across the country. As he navigates this shift, he sees the value in what he considered one of his biggest competitors. “As the owner of a brick and mortar store, I considered Amazon the bane of my existence, but I now see it as a launching pad that will give WIN the opportunity to reach more audiences

and even catch the eye of prospective retailers,” says Silverman. WIN detergent is not your average detergent and you won’t see it in the laundry aisles of big chains such as Albertson’s or Publix, but that’s exactly the way Silverman wants it. “WIN was developed to cater to a niche market. Our active ingredients are more expensive than the cleaners used in typical detergent. Because we have a higher price point, WIN would be overlooked on the shelves of your local supermarket," he says. The niche market is the millions of Americans who invest in pricey workout and athletic wear. Regular detergents do a great job on cotton, because 90% of the clothing worn in the US is cotton. But the synthetic fabrics used to make workout gear require different cleaning agents, which is where WIN steps in. The “sweaty” smell workout gear develops over time is caused by the oils that accumulate in these fabrics, not only giving it a putrid smell, but also weakening

its ability to wick away sweat. WIN is specially formulated to separate the oils from those synthetic fabrics, ensuring they smell fresh and perform like brand new! BUSINESSES & OPPORTUNITIES

Thrive as a Freelancer Navigate the Gig Economy in the Digital Era with Fortitude By Dr. Emad Mousavi

T

he term “gig economy” was coined around 2009 during the Great Recession, to address the growing number of people making or supplementing their living through a series of part-time, freelance or consulting engagements. During the economic downturn, gigs were a way of making extra money, but over the last ten years it has become a career path that many choose in order to not just make a living but be their own bosses. Many companies are even shifting their own structures to incorporate more contractors to keep their overhead costs lower. Remote work tools and the increasingly paperless processes of most organizations have helped make this arrangement more practical for workers and managers. The proliferation of online sites and mobile applications designed to facilitate contract employment has contributed to the growth of the gig economy as well. Uber was one of the pioneers, quickly followed by other ridesharing companies, as well as apps like TaskRabbit, Fiverr and Thumbtack. So, with contracting becoming more of a norm than an anomaly and technology helping make finding and executing work easier, what challenges do freelancers face navigating the “gig economy”? Lack of traditional employment benefits (health insurance, etc.) and other perks, as well as instability of income, have always come with the territory of non-full-time work. While some companies that rely heavily on contractors have adjusted their practices to account for those gaps (offering access to health plans and corporate discounts and the like), the fact remains that freelancers are typically left on their own.

With the obstacles they face, why would anyone choose to be a freelancer? Sure you’re often working from home, avoiding the commute and bad break room coffee, but that’s by no means the only benefit. Ultimately, freelancing is an attractive option because there is so much opportunity to build a lucrative and fulfilling career doing something you care about and enjoy doing.

Business, entrepreneur Elaine Pofeldt insists that it is possible to “make great money, work the way you like, have the life you want,” but that freelancers must be creative and use the tools at their disposal to build a solid business. When you’re confined to a single job description, you can end up personally and professionally stifled. But freelancers can work with clients around the globe, thanks to digital communication and workflow tools. They can expand their skill sets, pivot to new career paths and explore potentials.

“Get your profiles up; get some jobs under your belt, post work examples and some ratings and testimonials from your clients to lend you credibility.” And doing just that will help them to be more attractive to potential employers. Having to manage sales and marketing with all other business aspects is not easy, but certainly a great way to learn to drum up leads, advertise their offerings and close deals, which many traditional employees never get a chance to learn or even practice. So no matter your field, it’s a good idea to brush up on some marketing techniques, especially those that can be accomplished using free or low-cost online tools like social media, and SEO tools to drive traffic to your website and social media. Having to diversify your skills and make yourself indispensable to your employers in more ways than one is another great journey you explore when freelancing. If you’re a writer, try learning more about code and design to enable you to transition into digital content and web work, as many organizations have begun to create these kinds of multidisciplinary roles. And what about those tools? Freelance marketplaces are nothing new,

Pivot to a profitable career path. especially for professional services like accounting, writing, marketing, etc. but they are beginning to take a different structure to accommodate a growing force of contractors and their evolving needs. They allow for networking with other contractors, which can be extremely useful for access to training, augmenting your own services or creating the net of administrative, legal, financial, etc. support that you are lacking without a traditional structure. They also have begun to offer a more decentralized platform that enables peer-to-peer interaction and transaction, that keeps middlemen out of the equation, letting freelancers keep more of their own profits and giving employers unimpeded access to talent. The great thing about freelancing is that the opportunities really are unlimited. You don’t need to have startup capital or an official office; you can just jump in with little to no barriers to entry. And it’s advisable to get started as soon as possible. Get your profiles up; get some jobs under your belt, post work examples and some ratings and testimonials from your clients to lend you credibility. The “gig economy” is not a new phenomenon. It is, however, expanding and evolving to allow for a new kind of employment where the worker oversees their own processes and time, and is primarily responsible for delivering results. As a freelancer, you can have a much more adventurous journey in your career, meet with many more people and explore many more opportunities, and that is a way of life that more and more people are choosing nowadays. MARKETING & SALES

Pocket-Friendly Marketing Plan Successfully Advertise Your Home Business on a $5,000 Budget By Philip Piletic

T

he beginning of a business adventure can be exciting. It all starts with an idea and a dream, but turning that dream into a reality takes solid planning. To make your business a success, you need to develop the marketing strategy that is right for you. You may think that you need to have a large amount of capital upfront to develop a successful marketing plan, but with technology such as the Internet and social media, building a successful marketing plan is no longer a monumental task. There are many marketing avenues for building a successful business, many of which are low-cost or even free to integrate. Let’s say that you only have $5,000 to spend and you want to get the most out of your marketing budget. What are the best ways to spend it so that you get the most from your efforts?

Know Your Customers Many smaller entrepreneurs think that if you have a great product and you put it out there that it will automatically sell. This is the biggest mistake that most small businesses make. You need to not only let people know about your product and how it can help them, you also need to build long-term relationships to keep them coming back. Building relationships with your customers has a lifetime impact on the bottom line not only through more business from the same client, but from word-of-mouth advertising, which is the best free advertising because it is based on trust.

The first step to any successful campaign is to do market research about your customers and your competition. You need to know what your clients want and what media channels will reach them best. You also need to know about your competitors’ products and how they reach their customer base. Website Essentials In today’s world, having a website or blog is the new business card. If you don’t have a website, you automatically lose credibility as a legitimate business. You also lose out on an important way to reach your customers with information such as your: ■ ■

Contact information Physical and web locations Map and driving directions Your uniqueness

If you do not have a website, you are missing out on the cheap way to give your customers basic information about your business, but you are also missing out on something else. You are missing out on the opportunity to connect with your customers and give them important information about why your product or service is unique, and how you are different than your competition. Getting your first client through your blog is the first major hurdle that you have to overcome when starting out.

“Giving something away for free can often have big returns when it comes to attracting attention.” Social Media Works If you do not understand the importance of social media in a marketing campaign, it is possible that you may have been living in a cave for the past several decades. In today’s marketing mix, social media is king. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter can help you reach customers through sharing what you post about your business.

Social media not only allows you to get free exposure when people share your post; it also allows you to build a personality for your business that is truly unique. Creating social media goals is the key to getting the most value from your social media strategy. Social media is one of the most important resources for reaching your target market at a cost that is budget-friendly. Email Marketing Campaign In the world of social media, many people forget that email campaigns still play an important role in providing free or low-cost advertising opportunities. Email is a great way to keep

Produce unique video content to engage website visitors. your customers updated about your products and services, and to connect with them through special sales campaigns or newsletters. One of the best tips for running a successful email campaign is to make your messages personal, rather than using a mass-marketing approach. Gone are the days when you can send out a message full of hype and hyperbole with the expectation that it will increase sales. In fact, this type of message can harm your brand and your future sales by making you sound like everybody’s used car salesman. Now, low-cost email programs can help you get the most from your advertising dollars. They allow you to handle the task quickly and easily through creating groups, special lists and prescheduling your email campaign. Stand Out from the Crowd In a crowded marketplace, developing a gimmick can help you attract attention. These strategies can include special promotions, holiday advertising campaigns and anything that creates buzz. Giving something away for free can often have big returns when it comes to attracting attention. Another popular idea is finding a cause that means something to your customers and donating a portion of your sales to it. People like to win prizes and free stuff. Don’t Forget Local In the world of the World Wide Web, sometimes free local opportunities for advertising are overlooked. Even though it seems as if the Internet has taken over the advertising world, it is important not to ignore your local market. A recurring ad in a local publication can be an excellent choice. www.homebusinessmag.com

Use Micro-Influencers Micro-influencers are people who have a small following of between 1,000 to 100,000 followers. They are not big celebrities, but they should not be ignored either. Even though they are not a household name, they have more personal engagement and are trusted by their audience.

Micro-influencers are often easy to contact. You can search for them using relevant hashtags and keywords for your business. These people can become your best brand advocates, but their services are not free and you may have to pay as much as $100 per post, but it is worth it because of the degree of influence that they have on your market.

“Taking advantage of today’s technology and social media can have big payoffs.” Videos Are King Nowadays, people like to watch videos much more than they like to read written content, and with a little bit of software and some basic knowledge, it is now easy to produce your own video content. Some of the most influential people in today’s marketing world are selfmade YouTube stars.

Now you have several ways that you can costeffectively build a marketing campaign. Let’s see how this all adds up in the end using average costs for different types of services. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Website — $200 Social Media Services & Content — $1,000 Email Marketing — $100 Video Media — $1,000 Local Print Ads — $1,500 Micro-Influencers — $1,200 TOTAL — $5,000

5 WAYS TO FIND MEANINGFUL INFLUENCERS ON A BUDGET

N

on-celebrity influencers are just as, if not more than, influential than celebrities. Use these five tips to find better influencers for your startup, without having to pay astronomical fees.

1. Ask Friends and Co-workers for Influencer Recommendations Starting with your own network to find influencers is a way to convey an established relationship when you're approaching potential new influencers. It might also be possible to ask whomever is the follower of the influencer to approach them or provide an introduction for you. Bloggers and social media users with high engagement (not just followers) are great accounts to start following. You'll want to learn more about their content and their interactions, so when you pitch them to check out your product or service, it is relevant to what they are consistently producing.

2. Search Forums on Reddit While it's not a traditional social media site, Reddit's content reaches far beyond its website users, as its posts get shared and distributed after showing up on the site. Subscribe to communities that relate to your business, connect with other Reddit users, and see whose content they're posting to get a better idea of potential influencers so you can ultimately build your business.

3. Form Relationships on Social Media Social media provides your start-up with the opportunity to directly and deeply

connect with leads and customers. Don't neglect your interactions on these sites and use them as direct pathways to find influencers. Pay attention to those who emerge as your biggest brand advocates on social sites and examine their potential to promote your brand to their followers.

4. Reach Out to Journalists

MARKETING & SALES

The word reoccurring is an important element when it comes to print advertising, and any other type of advertising for that matter. Raising local awareness of your business can generate word-of-mouth advertising by people who know you personally. This can be a powerful recommendation.

Businesses should know that journalists are hungry for story ideas and are very active on Twitter. In a fast-paced news world, any coverage that can be given to the next giant product or service is huge for a journalist. Most newspapers, TV stations, magazines and other traditional news outlets feature “tips” sections, where media consumers can submit story ideas. Don't be afraid to use them, since whoever covers your brand may become an advocate who can influence on your behalf in the future.

5. Browse Influencer Tools Klout and BuzzSumo are two tools that will show you who notable influencers are based on topics you submit. When you find influencers through wide-reaching tools like this, the best way to get noticed by influencers and form a connection is to follow them on social media, subscribe to their blogs and consume their content. By paying attention and citing specific examples of why a partnership with your business would benefit the influencer, they'll be more likely to consider your business in their content coverage. social media can have big payoffs. Regardless of the marketing mix that you choose to use, the most important step is getting to know your customers and where to find them. You also need to know how to connect with them on a personal level.

business and your brand. If you do this, and take advantage of cost-effective marketing channels that are available today, you will quickly find your business growing and your dreams will come true.

Today’s customers are inundated with marketing messages every day. In order to reach them, you need to get to know them well and deliver a message that builds trust in your

SUCCESS STORIES

Empowering Young Artists to Succeed Multifaceted Businesswoman Starts Record Label to Spotlight Positive Music By Donnita Shaw

L

ena Jenkins-Smith, CEO of Young Millennium Records, knows more than a thing or two about paying dues. She spent 16-plus years working as an executive assistant to some of Hollywood’s elite and in the process, she carved out an inspiring career, working with top-tier talent such as Zaytoven, SWV, Lil Wayne and more. Starting her career paved her way to becoming the founder of her own record label that emphasizes positive music; it has been a journey filled with rollercoaster-like career transitions. Jenkins-Smith worked closely with celebrities including Teddy Riley, Paula Abdul, and Katt Williams by the age of 30, and served as a tour manager and wardrobe stylist. She even left the entertainment industry behind to pursue higher education and become a teacher. Jenkins-Smith earned multiple degrees in business management, psychology, and liberal studies with a focus on production.

the studio industry as well as high-end home improvement called The Kitchen Store, and she was there for six years. It was there that she learned the fundamentals of life. She is a former school teacher and used to teach first grade, second grade, and fifth grade, along with middle school health. Through her teaching experience came her love for empowering the youth and helping them through music and entertainment. Her desire to make an impact continued to grow, bringing her back to realize her dream of providing audiences with what she describes as “good, clean” music, all while empowering up-and-comers — including her three children — to be groomed and developed for success in an industry that can be dog-eatdog. In just two years, artists have already been creating a buzz including Jenkins-Smith’s 17-year-old son, Cyrus, who has worked with heavy-hitting producers (“some of the same producers Migos, Gucci, and T.I. use,” she added proudly) and opened for Cardi B late last year. She is committed to giving young artists a head-start. The ambitious entrepreneur started out in Atlanta, working from her home office looking for artists and creating/developing her business plan for her new record label. She knew that she was going to have to create an amazing brand and have a pure key messaging to help mold these new artists into well-respected brands. She later branched out to the west coast to reconnect with some of her former colleagues in the entertainment business. She did a lot of talent scouting and got some help from R&B legend Keith Sweat to guide her in the way she should go with the business. He also signed on as the President of Young Millennium Records, along with his son being an artist.

Jenkins-Smith graduated from Loyola Marymount University in California. She also received an Executive MBA from Strayer University under the study of Jack Welch. Her very first job out of high school was an office manager. She started working at a place that services 28

Failure is not the alternative to success. It’s something to be avoided, but it’s also only a temporary setback on a bigger, more significant course. Everybody encounters failure at one point or another. What truly matters is how you react to and learn from that failure. Jenkins-Smith has taken every failure she encountered and turned it into triumph. People you have helped in the past will not always be willing to return the favor when needed, she quickly learned. The golden rule is big in her life and she thought if by just treating people

right, that would automatically get her help in return. Well she learned the hard way that even though you may get a blessing, it may not always be from those whom you have blessed. With building a successful business, you have to have an eager team behind you that believes in your vision and wants your brand to succeed. Jenkins-Smith’s advice for emerging CEOs is to listen to your employees, even if you don’t make your decisions based off of what they say. Learn what their gripes are and their complaints, and balance them out with what makes them happy. Find their skills and try to build the position around those. Don’t have people continue to do what they are not good at. Everyone is happier that way and employees will do a better job once they know you are taking notice of their strengths and using them to the company’s advantage. And smile, as it never hurts to smile. She is always known as the woman whose smile brightens the room. It means a lot and it goes a long way! The future for this go-getter is bright and she is still working on empowering everyone around her. Jenkins-Smith is working on a scripted series that showcases the empowerment of women who work behind the scenes, according to Thrive Global. Her motto is to never be the smartest person in the room. Also that you should always strive to learn more and take advice from those that are smarter and more affluent than you. She is steadily growing and learning from her peers in the entertainment industry. She is looking to gain more young artists to create more positive music for the younger generation. By creating more opportunities, she feels like all of her hard work is paying off. Visit http://youngmr.com/. www.homebusinessmag.com

Irish Dadpreneur Launches The Field Toy That Promotes Screen-Free, Creative Play for Kids By Alicia McCarthy

I

t all started when Ireland-based dadpreneur Padraic Cuddy’s son asked for a toy field so he could play with his farm animal and machinery figurines. “When I gifted him with my version of a Field, which I handcrafted from timber and synthetic grasses, he was so excited and played for hours with his new toy,” Cuddy says. After seeing how his son loved playing with the replica field and used his imagination, the idea for The Field kids toys was born.

The Field toy helps inspire real world, screenfree, and imaginative play. It is free of batteries and features lush green grass, hedging, wooden farm gates, farm animals, a tractor, and more! Creative, inventive play is proven to have intellectual, emotional and social benefits, and The Field toy helps boys and girls ages 3+ get away from the screens and use their own ingenuity to develop a farm world before their eyes. It is available in two sizes: the original Field, 26” x 17”, and a Half Acre Field, 12” x 17”. Cuddy and his company supply premium quality synthetic grasses to the Irish market. According to Cuddy, he embarked on that business venture in 2010 as a direct result of

the downturn in the economy and a gap he identified in the Irish market. “This business continues to go from strength to strength and with the introduction of the Field toys in 2015, this has enabled us to find additional and novel uses for our synthetic grasses,” Cuddy says. “It was a lovely synergy of my two passions!” www.homebusinessmag.com

10-44_HBM_FALL2018.indd 29

Cuddy says that the biggest challenge he’s had to overcome in launching his business (like all businesses starting out) was finance. He was lucky to have and continue to have another profitable business that allowed them to prop up the Field toy business during the crucial launch phase. The Field toy now stands on its own two feet and all funds are reinvested for business development and growth. “Unlike other small businesses, we retain 100% equity in the business,” Cuddy says. “This has allowed us to move from initial launch stage back in September 2015 to market expansion in a relatively short period of time. We are in total control of our business and where it moves to next. While this is stressful at times I wouldn’t have it any other way!” Cuddy introduced The Field toy to the market just three years ago and they’re already on their way of achieving their goal of becoming the number one farming toy for children aged 3+. Their Field toys are also now available in America as of this September. To market The Field, Cuddy says that direct marketing via social media has been effective. “We utilize our social media platforms to speak directly to consumers and grow our audience that loves The Field toys,” Cuddy says.

The Field has been featured on the national Irish network RTE annually since its inception as a holiday must-have! The show is watched by an average of 1.3 million viewers and in 109 countries outside of Ireland. It is the most watched program of the year in Ireland. According to Cuddy, the features on this program year after year have helped to turn

Padraic Cuddy, Founder of The Field toy

a small cottage business into an international brand. In addition to significant cost savings, Cuddy says that being able to be with family is another major advantage of running his business from his home-based office. “It affords us more quality family time together, as I get to see my wife and children every day and nearly every minute of the day if we wanted to! I love that I am running an international business from home,” he says. Cuddy says that there is such thing as a balanced life when you’re an entrepreneur; it all just depends on your perspective. He feels fortunate to be able to work from home, where his days and hours aren’t set per day. “If I get a call on a Sunday afternoon to view a prospective job from the synthetic grass business, then I feel very fortunate I am able to follow up on this,” he says. “I love being an entrepreneur and feel it’s not something you can turn on and off or clock on or off from. This suits me and how I operate. It doesn’t suit everyone and that’s why I feel you are either born an entrepreneur or not.” According to Cuddy, launching The Field has been his greatest business achievement thus far. “I am extremely proud we have created a unique Irish toy business offering fun, educational and creative toy products which have not been created before anywhere in the world!” In the next three years, they hope to be firmly established in the American market with a further launch to international markets like Europe. Cuddy says he also hopes to continue enjoying a balanced life by working from home and for the Field toys to be known and loved worldwide. Visit amazon.com/thefield. Fall 2018 | Home Business

Manage Your Small Business Finances Draw Up a Financial Action Plan to Properly Handle Your Accounts By CompareMyRates

MONEY

I

f you want to keep the cash flowing into your business, it is important that you are aware of all the financial affairs. Not only will this help you maintain a safe financial state, but it will also help you avoid unanticipated business debt. You can accomplish a sturdy position to enable investment in business expansion plans.

1. Manage Business Accounts To manage the accounts, you can acquire the services of a competent bookkeeper. Purchasing accounting software is a good option for keeping track of your investments and profits. 2. Assess Business Costs It is essential that you keep a record of your business expenses to assess invested money. 3. Design Financial Projections Designing a clear financial action plan will assist you in anticipating your business obstacles so you can work out a plan for overcoming them.

Create templates, “ automatic SMS messages or emails to follow up on invoices.

4. Be Active with Invoicing Keep track of who you provide services to. Send them invoices once you provide services. Set and adhere to the fixed payment terms, which should not be more than seven days. This will help you keep the finances clear. Payments follow-up is a must. Create templates, automatic SMS messages or emails to follow up on invoices. Keep a reference of the invoice numbers to cross-check them with the payments that are due. 5. Make a New Bank Account for Business Payments If you want to stay free from a tax headache and inexplicable losses, avoid mixing your personal finances with your business finances. Not only will this help you gauge profitability conveniently, but will also help you track your business expenses. 6. Get a Business Credit Card Having a credit card specifically designed for 30

business owners will save you money in the long run and help you manage your finances. Business credit cards have a higher credit limit compared to other types of cards, and you will get exclusive perks and rewards for your business. To make the process easier, you can compare business credit cards at CompareMyRates all at once, without having to manually do research and reviews. 7. Maintain a Record of Personal Business Loans Keep a record of your business loans to stay abreast with your financial status. With an accurate record, you can pay back the loans before having to pay a business tax on the profit. 8. Use Your Profits for Yourself Using all your profits on yourself is not what we mean here; you can start with 5 to 10 percent of earnings first. This way you can save money consistently and evaluate your business's profitability and can pay the unexpected expenses of your business. 9. Be Frugal with Your Profits Taking advantage of your business money as an owner is not a good idea. It is better that you set yourself a fixed amount and use government-mandated advantages only. This tip will help you become flexible in terms of saving money for the future. 10. Keep Your Traveling Costs Minimal Make sure that your traveling costs on business trips are minimal. Be economical when choosing hotels or traveling packages. Try not to overspend on hefty accommodations or luxurious hotels. This will not impress anyone and will cost you an unnecessarily large amount with no profit. 11. Maintain Legal Fees for the Business An average fee for a legal service is around $450. Discuss your expectations and business deals clearly with your lawyer before procuring legal services. Select the most cost-effective business billing option, for instance, hourly payments. Discuss the possibility of payment deferment until your project is financially stable. 12. Manage the Business Expansion Cost It is important that you devise a business expansion plan in advance. Investing a large amount in a business that is risky can be dangerous.

Keep a record of your business expenses to assess invested money.

13. Invest in Renting Instead of Purchasing This is the best way to avoid maintenance costs. Consider leasing instead of purchasing; it will save you money and you can cut additional expenses you'd have on the equipment you need for a limited time period. Similarly, you can rent your office to make expansion or relocation hassle-free and easier. 14. Apply for a Loan Before Any Financial Instability Applying for a loan before you face any financial instability in your business is the right way to avoid ‘waiting for a loan’ when facing financial trouble. Apply for a business credit when your financial state is stable and good. This way you can use the credited amount on your business's expansion or deal with any emergency situations. 15. Calculate Your Capital for a Safe Business Startup This is one of the common problems most small businesses face. They lack enough capital amounts to get through the business startup phase. To avoid this, it is essential to save 3-4 months' business expenses or the amount you think you will need during the start-up phase in advance. Plan wisely if there is no business revenue in the startup phase. 16. Avoid Spending Prematurely Be wise with your decisions regarding spending money on business cards, marketing materials, inventory, signage or cars before you make profit or revenue. This will block the cash flow. CompareMyRates is a leading comparison tool in Canada for all kinds of bank accounts, credit cards, phone, and internet plans. Productivity Tools for the Office HOME OFFICE

Use Digital Ecosystems to Help Your Home Business Thrive By Mayumi Nakamura, President & CEO, PSP, Inc.

S

ince the online world began, technology has changed the way we live. From roughly 300 million Internet users in 1998 to more than 4 billion people (and counting!) today, the use of the web to gather information, communicate, entertain and conduct business has grown significantly since the first web page went live in the early 1990s. With the rise of the Internet, so too has come the rise of the home-based business: last year, there were 38 million home-based businesses in the United States generating more than $425 billion in total annual revenue. With start-up costs low, as 44 percent of home-based businesses begin for less than $5,000, that trend also continues to expand. At one time, a physical location served as a company’s storefront, but these days websites have become a modern business’ virtual front door. Within a few minutes, anyone can conduct an online search leaving a good or bad impression on a potential customer. As a result, the use of strategic online tools, including a smart ecosystem to create your digital footprint, is increasingly important for home businesses to thrive.

enough of them. Typically led by one person who wears many hats, most home-based business owners are stretched thin, often leading them to work with family members or friends on the ‘complicated’ work of getting their online presence up and going. While this may seem like a trustworthy and cost-effective approach, it often backfires and can lead to costlier and less than ideal results, including loss of data security and out-of-date software that leaves a company’s privacy and financial security at risk while potentially causing more harm than good. Fear Not Technology: The ‘Right’ Approach for Setting Up & Maintaining Digital Ecosystems So what is the ‘right approach’ for setting up and maintaining an effective online presence for your home business? While the online world may seem overwhelming, there are a number of stress-free products and services that exist to make it easy to create and maintain effective digital ecosystems. These tools include: ■

a critical step in “theAs online process, secure hosting can help keep websites up and running so business owners don’t have to think about them.

But the thing that most home-based businesses hold in common is resources and not having 34

under one roof and help from experienced customer service representatives is just a phone call away. All of these sites can be mobile-ready and able to work on multiple devices, as well as search-engine friendly so they’re found by customers as you want. ■

Professional Emails and Online Marketing to Keep You Growing. Home business owners can show off their company and its style with every message through professional, personalized emails that stand out from the crowd, giving them access to email anytime, anywhere. And business owners can also use resources to help grow further through targeted online marketing designed to help them be successful.

Professional Website Building, or Custom Design & Development. Once a domain and host is set, simple, do-it-yourself tools are readily accessible that can practically build websites for busy business owners. Users can choose from a variety of professionally-designed templates and add their own content, with websites up and running in a matter of minutes. Alternatively, custom website design and development can further extend a brand to its online customers at reasonable costs. Talented designers and expert developers are able to work their magic to make visions a reality.

Current Tools to Help You Thrive So once your digital ecosystem is up and running, what to do? There are many existing tools that can help a home business thrive. From search to social media, multiple online tools exist to help get companies noticed and keep them growing, such as e-mail newsletters reaching customers with personalized content and professional design; free to inexpensive blogs effectively sharing information with the world and advertising your business while capturing details about search traffic; and social media connections added to sites — such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube — to further engage your audiences. Simple-to-use online forms (from signing-up to signing-in) can also capture valuable user information.

Simple Onboarding. For businesses who already have a website, it can be easy to simply transfer a site as well as a domain name, emails and blog so everything is

Included in this mix are many online ‘freebies’ to help boost marketing efforts. Monitoring customer reviews is easy to do via Google Alerts; comparing your website performance

Specific Tech Needs for Home Users: Making the Most of Your Resources To determine what a company needs, it’s important to start by looking at the business. Home-based businesses can run the gamut from service companies (landscaping, catering and interior design) to business consulting (accounting, graphic design, freelance writers) to consumer products (vintage clothing, furniture-building or other online wares), and more.

Memorable Domains & Hosting. Getting started online begins with securing a domain and having a name on the web that’s unique and memorable (just like your company) that can help customers find and remember you. As a critical step in the online process, secure hosting can help keep websites up and running so business owners don’t have to think about them.

Maintain an effective online presence for your home business.

Through the right kind of analytics, it’s also possible to further understand market drivers and challenges, including what your customers are most interested in on a web site, what’s driving them there (via keywords), and where they may not be visiting (and where you may need to improve your efforts). And while mobile applications are currently somewhat prohibitive and costly to build, we will soon be able to more simply create customizable apps that allow easier communications between customers — even for home businesses (with the new challenge being how to get ‘found’ in app stores). Tracking Trends to Keep Thriving As the online world continues to evolve, it’s also important to continue monitoring the shifting landscape. Day-to-day management can take up a considerable amount of time and it can be easy to become so involved in daily activities that growth opportunities can pass right by. By choosing an informed digital partner with dedicated support teams, it’s much easier to keep your finger on the pulse of the latest trends.

In the year ahead, there are numerous trends in technology, management and marketing that are relevant to home business owners. For example, the value of online and electronic commerce has become increasingly important, with many more consumers requesting cashless (only) payments. The barriers to entry here are low and the benefits can far outweigh the extra payment that it may cost a business. Additionally, syncing Facebook shops with Instagram pages can produce even more exposure when it comes to social shopping. Live video content is a growing tool for building engagement with audiences and sparking their interest while online. Catching the attention of micro-influencers, or folks with growing online followings, can prove a worthy effort. And personal data security will continue to become an increasingly significant topic. Start Today! In today’s marketplace, technology is a necessary element to success and home-based businesses need digital footprints that lead to successful client interactions. While it is www.homebusinessmag.com

Top 5 Smart Home Systems to Improve Your Home Office

ith a smart home office, HD video calls and a lightning-fast internet connection, many of us have found ourselves rarely needing to go to the office in person. Here are five modern home integrations that can make your home a better place to work than any shared office.

HOME OFFICE

to that of competitors is snappy via SEMrush; and home business owners can create custom dashboards with analytics across multiple platforms via Cyfe. Additionally, it’s easy to meet industry ‘influencers’ to help match your business needs via Klear; to get topics and suggestions on what to post in your blogs on Klout; and to track hashtags, accounts, keywords and mentions on Keyhole.

1. Get a Business-grade WiFi Connection in Your Home Don’t skimp when it comes to choosing your internet provider. Read reviews and see what kind of speeds they’re able to produce in your local area. When it comes to hardware, make sure you get the latest model of router. Consider also using a range extender to boost the signal from your home office to the rest of the house. These are pretty much essential if you have family members trying to download or stream at the same time.

2. Control Entry in and out of Your Home Without Getting Up The smart home solution is a handy twoway video intercom system, paired with smart locks on the front door. Install a video camera close to your front door so that you can get a good look at anyone who arrives. Most smart models allow you to get a live feed on your desktop, and thanks to audio intercom, you can ask them what they need. If it’s essential, you can let them in by remotely unlocking the front door.

3. Could a Voice Assistant Replace Your Secretary? Amazon’s Alexa has shown the world that voice recognition software has come on leaps and bounds since Apple first unveiled Siri. Nowadays, voice assistants have several amazing applications that you’ll want in a home office. For starters, they’re an easy way to set reminders, timers and alarms to help you manage your workday. They can also be synced to your

online calendar so that you don’t miss any important calls.

4. Don’t Forget to Keep Your Home and Work Telephone Lines Separate It’s true that you can replace almost all of a phone’s functionality via smarter uses of your computer. However, some of us do our best work with a telephone in hand. If you’re one of those people who uses a phone at work, remember to install separate work and home lines. This helps you keep your professional life and your private life neatly divided into two camps, and it’s also useful when working out your business expenses.

5. Protect Your Business Against Break-ins You’ll want all your accounts protected by secure passwords (each of which should be distinct and updated every three months or so). Consider two-factor authentication for the most sensitive accounts. Of course, you’ll also want everything backed up regularly in a secure location. Make sure you’re using reputable anti-virus software and a correctly configured firewall. For the physical security of your home business, you’ll want motion detectors that activate lights when triggered. Marvin Dudziec is the M.D. of MDfx: a leading smart home solutions company. Clean and Healthy Travel Mompreneur Creates Product That Protects Against Airplane Germs By Cassandra Wu

ntrepreneur Gina Hoensheid is on a mission to make airplane travel clean and healthy. Conceived out of her home office in Michigan, Seat Sitters has become a national phenomenon. This patented kit comes complete with an eco-friendly seat cover, two sanitary wipes, a face mask, a sanitary tray table cover and a “No Peanuts” sticker, which is priceless in bringing awareness of nut allergies to neighboring passengers and flight attendants. As airline budgets plummet, they have less time and manpower to properly disinfect seats, tray tables, and bathrooms before the next stream of passengers boards the airplane. Born out of necessity because she didn’t want one more vacation ruined from the kiddos or her husband getting sick from the airplane travel, Seat Sitters has been featured on ABC World News Now, Forbes.com, The Boston Globe, Inc. com, Yahoo Finance and TheKnot.com, just to name a few. This patent pending kit was

also named on the prestigious Amazon.com “Choice List”. “I wanted to create a product that was easy to use, eco-friendly and would give people peace of mind during travel,” Hoensheid explains. “After doing some research I realized just how long germs can survive on surfaces and how germy travel can be.” The FAA doesn't regulate or inspect aircraft cleaning, so frequency and thoroughness are left up to the airlines themselves. As a rule of thumb, an aircraft is supposed to be completely wiped down after every 30 days of service or at 100 flying-hour intervals. Hoensheid recommends wiping down the tray table, armrests and seatbelt buckle the second you sit down. Her handy kit includes two wipes and the perfect placemat for the tray table so you can set down your peanuts and silverware on a clean and sanitized surface. “This kit isn’t just for germaphobes,” empha-

sizes Hoensheid. “It is about a healthy way to travel.” Business travelers who are going directly to a meeting in their suit can put the Seat Sitter over their seat and have confidence that there is a clean barrier against any possible gunk that may have been left by the previous passenger. Hoensheid wants to change the face of travel, making it clean, healthy and fun. This eco-friendly product is sure to upgrade the cleanliness and healthiness of airplane travel. Physician Turns Childhood Home into a Bustling Doctor’s Office By Eric Johnson

fter migrating to the United States in his early teens with his parents from a small, rural farm in northern Spain, Dr. Joseph Mosquera attended Rutgers Medical School and the Arizona School of Integrative Medicine to better serve his local Hispanic community in Newark, NJ as a general practitioner. The building, which now houses his family practice, is the same house that he grew up in as a boy when his family first moved from Spain. The first floor of the house has been retrofitted into a doctor’s office, with the second floor remaining a living space. The living room is now a waiting room and his childhood bedroom is an examination room. With over 35 years of experience treating patients from all walks of life and working with continuing education for other physicians, Dr. Mosquera always wanted to help more people than the patients he is able to see daily. That’s why he co-founded SuReceta.com, a digital

destination for doctors and patients alike, to find integrative health strategies and savings tools reflective of his medical methodology. When it comes to traditional healthcare in the U.S., Dr. Mosquera considers the system to be broken. Prescription drug prices are 10 times higher than they were a decade ago. Doctors are only spending a few minutes with most patients. And it’s way worse if you don’t speak English. Many bilingual Hispanics lack health insurance or have poor medication coverage which results in nearly one third never filling their prescriptions or splitting their prescriptions to lower dosages. Even worse, many patients obtain vitamins and medications from outside the country which are not FDA approved or regulated for medical conditions that could be resolved through either natural remedies and/ or proper nutrition. With a true passion for pursuit of wellness, Dr. Mosquera offers his knowledge of integrative

Critical Success Factors for Working as an Entrepreneur on the Road • Before hanging your virtual “Open” sign, perform a thorough due diligence of your idea, business plan and standard industry practices. • Establish mission and/or vision statements and core values and adhere to them at all times. Potential customers are looking for, and appreciate, honesty, integrity and a steadfast commitment to what you stand for and have to offer. • Connect and engage with your target market through social media, e-newsletters, webinars and other means. People want to hear from you and their feedback can be invaluable. • Protect your data! With available free Wi-Fi, you run the risk of a data breach. Connect instead to a secure Wi-Fi hotspot via Virtual Private Network (VPN) software on your device(s) for access when needed. • Consider investing in a Voiceover IP (VOIP) phone system. Connected over the internet instead of a standard phone line, it provides easy access and anonymity for you and others on your account when making calls from their respective cell phone numbers. • Although you may be an expert

Why Keeping Business Records Is Essential for Long-Term Success

R

unning a business requires numerous skills and the many financial transactions that are conducted on a typical day need to be recorded. Both revenue and outgoings should be clearly listed and failure to effectively manage your bookkeeping could land you in hot water with the tax people. ■ Maintain Good Relationships – Most countries have rules and regulations regarding company taxation and audits and these need to be completed promptly. Should the tax department decide to investigate a business and they find irregularities, this could be very costly, and by employing the services of a qualified accountant, you can be sure that all your tax returns and books are always up-to-date and submitted when requested. ■ Evaluate Business Performance – It is very difficult to assess how a business is performing without a set of up-to-date books, which would include details of all

financial transactions and at a glance, you can see how the business is performing. Some companies have gone bankrupt because their losses were not evident until it was too late. ■ Identify Strengths and Weaknesses – Keeping an accurate set of accounts enables you to identify the company’s strong and weak points, which in turn allows the business owner to make the necessary amendments to strengthen weaker performance areas. A reputable accountant, such as EQ Financial (qfinancial.com.au), will ensure that all your business transactions are recorded. ■ Avoid Tax Investigations – If a company is late submitting their annual tax returns, or there is a discrepancy, this could cost the business and with a qualified accountant making sure that all the accounts are updated, you can avoid any investigations by the authorities.

■ Improved Business Funding Status – Should a business owner be looking for funding, having a clear set of accounts will improve their chances of the loan application being approved. Lenders like to see accurate accounts and if you can show that your company is making enough money to repay the loan, the chances are you will get the business funding you need. ■ Effective Planning for the Future – If your company’s accounts are professionally handled and adequately maintained, then it is much easier to plan for the future, as it will be clear to see the status of the business. A qualified accountant would ensure that your accounts are always updated with the correct information and this allows for effective planning for the future.

Ask any successful entrepreneur and they will tell you to enlist the services of a qualified accountant as soon as possible; doing so will have many benefits. www.homebusinessmag.com
