Associate Volunteers of the Year, and the BEAM Award. Here’s a quick glance at what each award is, and some of the qualifications to determine each winner.

Nomination forms for all the awards are included as inserts in this issue of the Plains Builder. The evaluation period for each award is July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018.

Builder and Associate Volunteers of the Year

Formerly named Builder and Associate of the Year, these two awards are given yearly to two individuals, one Builder member and one Associate member. They represent the HBA’s highest honors, outside of the Cornerstone Award, which is a career achievement recognition. Most of the emphasis for selection is on the nominee’s support of the HBA of F-M within the past year (not his or her entire body of work at the HBA).

Any HBA member can make nominations for these awards. Simply fill out the enclosed form, or email Krista Mund at kristam@hbafm.com.

Nominees are judged on five general criteria: • Member Involvement & Industry Promotion (30 points) • How the member is involved in the HBA and consistently promotes its mission. Some examples are member recruitment/retention, supporting workforce development or volunteering for lobbying efforts.

• Local Association Activity (30 points) • Member’s activity within the HBA’s boards, committee, task forces, publications, events, etc., and could also include Association awards and honors.

• Professional Accomplishments (20 points) • Member’s success through his or her business growth and professional development not related to the HBA. • Civic Activity (15 points) • Member’s support of the local community and charitable efforts.

• State & National Association Activity (5 points) • Member’s participation within the North Dakota Association of Builders and National Association of Home Builders: boards, committees, events, etc.

BEAM Award

BEAM stands for “Builders Engaging Associate Members.” The goal of this award is to recognize those Builder member companies who primarily work with fellow HBA members in a trustworthy, ethical way.

Unlike the Builder and Associate Volunteers of the Year Awards, only Associate members can make nominations. A form is included in this issue of the Plains Builder or email Krista Mund at kristam@hbafm.com with up to five Builder nominations.

Builder company nominees will be evaluated by their trade partners on loyalty, ethics, trust, communication and consideration.

Each of these honors will be presented at our Awards Gala & Annual Meeting Oct. 25. The HBA’s local-level winners for Builder and Associate Volunteers of the Year and the BEAM Award will move on to the state level with the North Dakota Association of Builders.

Be sure to read the Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation’s president’s message on page 26 since there is also an award for its Volunteer of the Year. That honor recognizes one member going above and beyond for the HBC’s charitable efforts.

Workforce Wins With HBC Involvement

by Summer Hammond, Education & Development Coordinator Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation has been busy reaching out to post-secondary Student Chapters affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders and local high school students. The goal has been to coordinate fun activities motivating students toward a career in the homebuilding industry. See below for a list of events and organizations supported to help further this mission.

Student Mixer

April started off with a Student Mixer at Dabbert Custom Homes with over 30 students attending. Student Chapters from North Dakota State University, North Dakota State College of Science, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Minnesota State Community and Technical College were invited. This event was a great opportunity for students to network with HBA of F-M members on their career paths and possibly find internships, summer jobs or future careers. More student/member connection opportunities like this will result in closer relationships.

Over $12K Raised for HBC, Milnor Students Visit Parade

During the Spring Parade of Homes, there were five luxurious featured homes whose admission fees benefitted HBC. The featured homes raised $12,204, these funds help HBC focus on workforce development with high school and post-secondary students. HBC had the opportunity to meet three eager sophomore students from Milnor High School and provide them with tickets to visit these featured homes.

The three students traveled to Fargo April 27 with big goals to accomplish. They searched for ideas for their final project, which is to design their own bedroom inside a 24� x 24� box. While in town, they visited Hom Furniture, Home Depot and Parade homes in search of materials, products, ideas and expenses for their projects.

Career Fairs

HBC volunteers enjoy interacting with schools to help spread the word on the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades. One of the best ways to connect is through career fairs, speaking face-toface with students regarding homebuilding. On May 4, HBA Education & Development Coordinator Summer Hammond, along with Aaron Kochmann, Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc., participated in a tenexhibitor career fair. It provided the perfect setting to advertise the upcoming Herdina Academy. Many students were interested and amazed that three college credits were available for after graduating the Academy.

Home Tours

This fall, four local schools received tours of a completed remodel and a new build on the Fall Parade of Homes. Building on that success, HBC organized a tour after the Spring Parade of Homes with homes in three different stages of construction for 80 students from local high schools. Thomsen Homes made their worksites available while ISR Homes provided lunch. Students learned about the industry from HBA of F-M CEO Bryce Johnson and project managers Bryan Kutter, Andy Quittschreiber and Paul Reinowski from Thomsen Homes.

SkillsUSA Support

Some of the students that participated in the tours mentioned above have participated in a state-level competition and advanced to the National SkillsUSA Championship Competition at the end of June in Louisville, KY. SkillsUSA partners with students, teachers and the industry to work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.

To celebrate the hard work and interest in the industry of these five students, HBC raised funds at its Parade of Homes Celebration in May. Members were able to raise over $1,800, enough money to send all five students to nationals!

Election Involvement Keeps Building Industry Top of Mind

by Chelsea Diederich, Communications Coordinator The HBA of F-M is in full gear for the election season. Staying involved in local, state and national elections ensures that the building industry is top-of-mind for current elected officials and candidates running for seats. Locally, voting for positions in Fargo, West Fargo, Horace and Cass County is June 12.

In preparation for these big elections, the HBA of F-M held Candidate Forums for Fargo and West Fargo. In Fargo there are two commission seats up for re-election, Dave Piepkorn and Tony Gehrig. Mayor Tim Mahoney is up for re-election, but is running un-opposed. There are a total of nine candidates running for city commission including the incumbents. In West Fargo there are two commission seats up for re-election, Mark Wentz and Duane Hanson. Wentz is not seeking re-election, but Hanson is, along with two other candidates. See the insert included in this issue for whom the HBA of F-M endorsed for Fargo and West Fargo elections.

In addition, elections will happen this fall for a number of seats including state senators and representatives, N.D. Secretary of State, N.D. Attorney General, U.S. House Representative and U.S. Senator.

In preparation for these big races, the North Dakota Association of Builders hosted Bringing Housing Home in May. Bringing Housing Home is an event promoted by the National Association of Home Builders that is meant to encourage state and local associations to meet with their congressional delegation during their break. In addition to meeting with current elected officials, NDAB organized meetings to get to know candidates running for open seats.

An important piece of the election cycle is supporting housing friendly candidates through Association endorsements and NDAB-PAC funds. In an effort to raise funds for NDABPAC, (the state association’s political action committee) the HBA of F-M held a Bean Bag Tournament with over 50 members in attendance! Thank you to Labor Masters for sponsoring food and drinks and Twin City Garage Door for hosting the event in its showroom.

Vote June 12 June 12 is primary election day in Bismarck. Do you vote? Do you make sure your

voice is heard in electing candidates you feel are the best fit for the job and will be an advocate for the homebuilding industry? The primary is just as important of a time to vote as it will be to do so again in November for the general election. Voting is a right we all have and by voting, you are helping to shape the future.

Another way to be involved in advocacy is to become active with NDAB-PAC. NDAB-PAC is the North Dakota Association of Builders’ Political Action Committee.

It is a non-partisan political action committee which provides support for candidates who are friends of the building industry. NDAB-PAC recognizes there is strength in numbers. People who show they care and are concerned about the future of the building industry make contributions to NDAB-PAC because they believe that cooperation equals strength. You alone can’t influence the Legislature or Congress on issues that can devastate your business. NDAB-PAC is your front line of defense.

It monitors legislative issues and works to protect and promote the building industry.

By pooling contributions from NDAB members, NDAB-PAC can help elect legislators who understand and support the issues and concerns of builders and associate members. NDAB-PAC is then able to contribute funds to candidates based on recommendations from our members and PAC Trustees for local and statewide candidates. BUILD-PAC, the national PAC for National Association of Home Builders is then able to provide political contributions to our national delegates as requested by our BUILD-PAC Trustee, John Koerselman.

In May, NDAB hosted Bringing Housing Home where our members were invited to meet, ask questions and hear from U.S. Sen. John Hoeven, Congressional Candidate Mac Schneider, Congressional Candidate Kelly Armstrong, N.D. Secretary of State Candidate Joshua Boschee, and N.D. Secretary of State Candidate Will Gardner. We encourage each of our locals to host socials, candidate forums, or small meetings where more of your members can get to know candidates and city officials to help make informed voting decisions and help build relationships.

Homeownership Remains a Key Part of the American Dream June is homeownership month, and we all understand the importance of

homeownership as a positive force for the economy on the local, state and national level.

There’s been a lot of talk in the news lately about Millennials delaying marriage, kids and homeownership. So, it would be easy to think that perhaps the traditional American dream of owning a home is changing. In fact, the opposite is true: Research shows that homeownership remains a goal for the vast majority of American renters.

A recent survey by Freddie Mac revealed that 91 percent of renters believe homeownership is something of which to be proud. And, younger renters are making plans to buy homes in the near future. In fact, nearly half of renters in the 25-to-34 age bracket – and nearly 60 percent of renters ages 35 to 44 – indicate that they plan to buy a home in the next three years.

These would-be buyers recognize the many benefits of homeownership, including the fact that homeownership is a primary source of net worth for many Americans, and is an important step in accumulating personal financial assets over the long term.

In fact, 90 percent of the survey respondents said that being able to pass their home on to their children is one of the top three benefits of homeownership.

Americans have more than $10.8 trillion of equity in their homes, and for most families, home equity represents the largest share of net worth.

Overcoming Obstacles to Homeownership

Qualifying for a mortgage and saving up for a downpayment remain primary obstacles to homeownership. To help address these concerns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) – recently announced new low-downpayment mortgage programs geared primarily toward the first-time home buyer market.

Small Gain for Custom Homebuilding at Start of 2018

May 18, 2018 National Association of Home Builder’s analysis of Census Data from the Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design survey indicates a small gain for custom homebuilding construction starts.

There were 31,000 total custom starts for the first quarter of the year. Over the last four quarters, there were 172,000 custom single-family home starts, an increase of approximately 2 percent over the prior four quarters. Note that this definition of custom homebuilding does not include homes intended for sale, so the analysis uses a narrow definition of the sector.

As measured on a one-year moving average, the market share of custom homebuilding in terms of total single-family starts is now 20 percent, down from a cycle high of 31.5 percent set during the second quarter of 2009.

The onset of the housing crisis and the Great Recession interrupted a 15-year long trend away from homes built on the eventual owner’s land. As housing production slowed in 2006 and 2007, the market share of this not-for-sale new housing increased as the number of single-family starts declined. The share increased because the credit crunch made it more difficult for builders to obtain AD&C credit, thus producing relatively greater production declines of for-sale single-family housing.

The market share for custom homebuilding will likely experience ups and downs in the quarters ahead as the overall singlefamily construction market expands. Recent declines in market share are due to an acceleration in overall single-family construction, especially in spec homebuilding.

Nothing Fowl About This Mama Duck HBA June Member of the Month

by Sami Eidenschink, Membership & Marketing Coordinator There is a new duck in town and she is taking the HBA of F-M by storm since joining in October of last year.

After spending over ten years in the advertising and marketing field, Sandra Vigen wanted to launch a business anyone could relate to, and Mama Ducks Cleaning Service was hatched.

Vigen, owner, operator and head “Mama Duck,” joined the Association only nine short months ago. She’s been rustling up feathers in the best way, making her the HBA staff’s selection for June member of the month.

“As a busy mom I can understand the feeling of not having enough time to spend with family and friends,” she says. “I decided that I needed to open my own business to benefit my clients and free up their time to spend on more important things.”

Despite her hectic schedule, Vigen still makes time to get involved! She has jumped on the Home and Garden Show committee and even joined the Home Builders Care Fish Fry committee which plans the Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year. She also exhibited at the 2018 Home & Garden Show, assisted in marking booth space on the Fargodome floor, and volunteers to assist staff where needed.

“I wanted to be a part of an organization that makes a difference in the community. With my previous career I couldn’t be a part of local organizations because of the travel time required. I knew right away, and with John Koerselman’s, Red River Drywall & Decorating Services, encouragement, that I wanted to join the HBA because of their passion in helping the community through their talents and building knowledge. It’s great to be part of something were individuals come together with their unique strengths, put aside their competition and make a difference together.”

Beyond the HBA, Vigen is also involved as a Chamber Ambassador for the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Association of Residential Cleaning Services International.

If there is one thing Vigen values in her business’s mission it is giving back. Since starting her company only nine months ago, she has started two service programs that assist those battling cancer or veterans who may have been injured in the line of duty to make life a little easier.

“I started Cleaning for Cancer as a tribute to my moms, Betty and Patti,” she says. “My mom battled

lung cancer and my husband’s mom, Patti, is a survivor of breast cancer. I started the Cleaning for Veterans program part as a tribute, to my husband Paul who is a Marine.”

Before Vigen’s mother passed away, even she participated in Association activities, making and donating new mittens to the annual holiday drive for the YWCA and Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Youth Home.

Her help has made an impact on staff throughout both the HBA and the HBC. Education & Development Coordinator Summer Hammond says “Sandra has been an unbelievable help to staff and the Association. I had the chance to work closely with her during preparation for the HBC Fish Fry. Whether it was preparing silent auction items or selling raffle tickets, she was always ready and eager to lend a helping hand. We are so appreciative to have her enthusiasm to make all Association actives be the best they can be! Congrats and thanks for all you do, Sandra!”

Vigen, along with Emily Herbranson, Fabricators Unlimited; Mary Aure, Fargo Tractor; Erick Roder, Signs 4 Work; and two other nominees, will be up for the Extra Mile Award which will be given out at the Oct. 25 Awards Gala & Annual Meeting.

Homeowners love their neighbors, neighborhood and everything that goes along with it, but their home is outdated and no longer functional. Some people have a hard time visualizing how their layout could be different or what could be done to refresh their home.

Projects that can be featured on the Remodeled Home Tour include entertaining space in yards and garage renovations, as well as the more common kitchens, baths, basements and or other interior living space.

The Remodeled Home Tour provides HBA of F-M remodeler and contractor members with a unique opportunity to showcase the work they can do. Getting ”before” pictures is crucial to show consumers who visit projects on the Tour what transformations are possible. The majority of visitors to a project are residents within the same neighborhood who might have the same floorplan.

Let’s Raise the Roof for Featured Home Builders

by Allison Weckman, Senior Events & Marketing Coordinator Each year, builders come together to raise funds for their industry’s charity, Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation, during the Parade of Homes. HBA of F-M invites Parade participants to volunteer their homes priced at $750,000 and higher to be luxurious featured homes. Consumers pay $5 to tour all these homes with all proceeds donated to HBC. This year’s Spring Parade had five luxurious featured homes by Benjamin Custom Homes, Carpenter Homes, Designer Homes of Fargo-Moorhead and Studio West Homes. Here is a quick peek at each fantastic home: Benjamin Custom Homes’ entry in Horizon Shores, Moorhead, is priced at $768,000. It includes many restored and reclaimed products, such as a brick wall in the dining room and basement bar that was reclaimed from the Historic Lewis Home in Fargo, originally built in 1899. The home also includes adorable kids’ spaces that include a secret room and a creative loft with a custom blockand-tackle ship ladder. Builder Ben Anderson founded his company at age 15 and built his first speculation home with his father in 2001.

Designer Homes of Fargo-Moorhead’s entry in Prairie Farms of Fargo is priced at $859,900. It includes a show-stopping 18-foot floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. Other features of the home include two-tone kitchen cabinets and a custom metal railing going up the stairway and continuing into the loft space that overlooks the stunning fireplace. Another aspect that delighted consumers was unique lighting fixtures from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Showroom. Designer Homes of Fargo-Moorhead celebrated its ten-year anniversary in 2017 and is owned by Robert A. Leslie.

Studio West Homes’ entry in River’s Bend at the Preserve of West Fargo is priced at $1,025,000. It features a mix of modern and traditional design. Iron, steel and concrete were used in conjunction with shiplap, reclaimed wood and tile. The family room includes a concrete fireplace with 32-foot reclaimed wood beams on the ceiling. The basement showcases a custom-built wet bar complete with a kegerator, huge wine cellar and a theater room. Studio West Homes is comprised of Elliot Steinbrink and Kirsten Waverek.

Builder Jason Carpenter founded his company in 2004, and volunteered two entries as featured homes this spring.

Carpenter Homes’ entry in Rivers Edge of Horace is priced at $1,000,000 and backs up to the Sheyenne River, framed by mature trees. The home includes spectacular natural light, showcasing the amazing river views in every room.

Priced at $2,500,000, Carpenter Homes’ entry in Lost River of Horace is the highest-valued home ever to be on a Parade. With over 9,700 square feet, it includes two master suites, both with luxurious ensuite baths and a chef’s kitchen, complete with quartz and butcher block tops.

There is also a see-through fireplace between the kitchen and great room. This home was on a private drive that didn’t allow for two-way traffic or parking. Gateway Chevrolet Cadillac provided a 12-passenger van and shuttle driver for all hours of the Parade.

HBC Awards Scholarship to Barnesville Senior Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation established its scholarship

program in 1999. In the last 19 years, HBC has awarded over $260,000 in high school and post-secondary scholarships, which has assisted over 250 students.

HBC takes great pride in giving dollars to support our future workforce in the trades.

We are proud to announce Jonathon Kletsch from Barnesville, Minn., received a $4,000 scholarship to pursue his dream of becoming an electrician.

Jonathon is a senior at Barnesville High School. His parents are Joel and Jodie Kletsch (pictured below). After graduation in June, Jonathon plans on enrolling in electrical technology at Minnesota State Community and Technical College. This winter, he had the opportunity to job shadow with JDP Electric, learning different aspects of the electrical field and this summer he will be one of 24 students participating in the Herdina Academy.

His interest was sparked in electrical while taking construction management class.

He learned about basic wiring and how it is involved in many projects and activities he enjoys.

Family has taught him the importance of trades and how a little sweat, dedication, hard work and the willingness to try something new can result in an incredible adventure.

Trade Wars: It’s All About Leverage With the United States-China trade war looking increasingly ominous, two

questions are on the minds of many: do trade deficits matter and which side has more to lose? Economists of almost all stripes agree that trade is good, that trade deficits don’t really matter, that the nation that imposes tariffs hurts itself, and that if it faces retaliation, the harm is made worse. That said, why is Trump threatening steep tariffs on Chinese imports? That relates to the second question: China has much more to lose economically in an all-out trade war than the United States. But that is not the end of the story.

Chinese exports to the United States totaled $500 billion in 2017, 4 percent of its GDP. Our exports to China were just $130 billion, or 0.7 percent of our GDP. Moreover, United States exports to China are not so easily replaced. China can easily stop buying planes from Boeing and instead buy them from Airbus, but then China has no leverage. And while China can stop buying soybeans or oil from the United States, those markets are global, and the impacts would be minimal.

China could conceivably sell U.S. Treasuries that they hold, but, at a minimum, that would push up China’s currency, which would, in turn, hurt exports, and might plunge the United States into a recession, further slowing exports. Finally, if China retaliates against United States firms, global manufacturers might no longer consider China as a safe place from which to sell to the United States. The resulting loss of foreign investment would hurt Chinese productivity growth and acquisition of foreign technology and industrial know-how.

If economically everything looks to be in favor of the United States, what’s the problem? Politics. And there, things are very different. If the economic leverage is with the United States, the political leverage rests fully with China. Chinese leaders do not have to worry about elections, constituents, critical editorials, or Sunday morning talk shows. On the contrary, when China was angry at South Korea for placing a United States-owned anti-missile defense system on their territory, China simply shut down a whole chain of South Korean department stores and Chinese tourists stopped showing up in Seoul. And when China was mad at Japan, rioters attacked Japanese-owned factories and Chinese purchases of Toyotas and Nissans shriveled to nothing in remarkably short order.

Now, the United States is not Japan or South Korea, so things are much more complicated, but the Chinese are strategically ready. They are responding to our tariffs by, among other things, deliberately slapping import taxes on products made in states represented by key congressional Republicans, such as whiskey from Mitch McConnell’s home state of Kentucky, and Harley Davidson motorcycles, since they come from Wisconsin, the home state of House Speaker Paul Ryan. China’s strategy is to get enough constituents, farmers and business leaders mad at enough Members of Congress in general and Republicans in particular to pressure Trump to back down.

Domestically, there is simply no way China can be seen as folding under United States pressure. On the contrary, President Xi faces pressure to project China as a world power. And true to form, the Chinese are quickly seeing and raising the tariff ante. As such, China is saying they will not back down, are prepared to suffer any financial costs, and are prepared to play a long game. For Trump to win under these conditions, he will have to be prepared to tolerate a great deal of political pain if his demands are not met, and convince the Chinese that his pain tolerance and endurance is greater than that of Beijing.

My bet is that the Chinese either play to Trump’s ego and give him a series of symbolic but largely hollow victories, or that China makes concessions they have offered in the past, but (importantly) offer no timetable for implementation and skirt the core United States complaints. That way Trump can claim he has won, but the status quo will essentially be maintained. And, in that case, the Chinese will have emerged victorious. Let the games begin.

GDP Gap Usually the gap between GDP and potential GDP (what GDP would be if all economic resources were fully utilized) is very small. However, during 09Q2, the gap hit $935 billion; 6.5% of GDP. That was the largest gap since 82Q4 when it hit 7.9%. Since mid-2009 the gap has steadily shrunk and is now actually negative, meaning the economy is overperforming! This is why inflation is expected to rise.

Winning Work April’s employment numbers were good. The unemployment rate fell to 3.9%, its best rate since 12/00, and the broadest measure of unemployment fell to 7.8%, best since 12/01. Yet wage growth was unchanged from earlier months, easing fears of inflation. And, that’s surprisingly good because job growth of just 164,000, and the upward revision of 32,000 to just 135,000 for March, suggests a labor market slowly running short of workers.

Global Growth The IMF estimates advanced economies will grow 2.5% in 2018 and 2.2% in 2019, up half a point each from their 10/17 report. US growth was boosted from 2.3% to 2.9% this year and 1.9% to 2.7% for 2019 due to powerful temporary fiscal stimulus. The IMF also noted that longerterm prospects for advanced economies are sobering given aging populations, weak productivity growth, high debt, possibly reduced trade and more.

Solid Spending After declining 0.25% in December, 0.68% in January, and 0.23% in February, inflation-adjusted retail sales jumped 0.62% in March and are now, solidly back at trend growth. Moreover, because those months are volatile, looking at Y-o-Y growth is preferable. Y-o-Y real retail sales growth troughed in 5/16 and have steadily risen since and are now solid at 2.1%. Low unemployment, good consumer confidence and tax cuts should keep it going.

Stunted Single-Family March housing starts were up 1.9% M-o-M, and 10.9% Y-o-Y, but single-family starts fell 3.7% M-o-M and rose just 5.2% Y-o-Y. The recent rise in starts is all due to multifamily activity! Since 10/16, single-family starts have risen marginally. However, multifamily starts steadily declined from 10/16 through 8/17, but have risen steadily since and are now enjoying some of their best months ever; due largely to weak single-family growth.

Dwelling Disappointment Seasonally adjusted annualized April housing starts were 1.287 million. While that is up 10.5% Y-o-Y, and 8% YTD, housing growth is painfully weak, and all because of single-family activity. Multifamily has fully recovered and will henceforth move sideways. However, single-family starts of 894,000 are at solidly recessionary levels despite being 107 months into the current economic recovery, the second longest in US history. Thus, we currently underbuild by 250,000 units/year!

Rising Rates While interest rates have been profoundly low until quite recently, the winds of change are coming. The Fed is beginning to meaningfully reduce its balance sheet, and large federal deficits are starting to appear, both of which will increase the supply of Treasuries. Add to that a steadily weakening dollar, the expectation of faster GDP growth, slowly rising inflation, and slightly faster wage growth, and higher rates seem inevitable.

Increasing Inflation Despite being on its heels for ages, inflation is strengthening. Y-o-Y economy-wide inflation ticked up to 1.85% in 18Q1, a hairsbreadth away from its fouryear peak of 1.96% registered in 17Q1. In addition, it’s meaningfully declined only once since 15Q3. Relatedly, total Y-o-Y employee compensation, which includes wages, salaries, and benefits, grew at 2.7% in 18Q1, its highest rate since 08Q3, and it too has almost steadily risen since 15Q3.

Council Wraps Up Projects in May Last month the council saw the completion and celebration of two projects

volunteers have been working on for the last year.

In conjunctions with the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the recently remodeled Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Youth Home. This ceremony was a great way to wrap up the project and gave the membership and media a chance to tour the home.

Remodeler The council also put a check-mark next to a fence rehab project that was approved back in 2017. Volunteers spent two days at the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality in Moorhead, MN digging holes, replacing posts and giving the home a refreshed look for its residents.

Thank you to all the volunteers who donated their time, skills and materials to these community requests. It is a great way to give the industry a good name and give back to worthy causes. The council was recently approached about three additional ramp projects, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer day and assistance in a “man cave” for a veteran; if you are interested in volunteering for any of these upcoming projects please reach out to membership & marketing coordinator, Sami Eidenschink.

Mund Celebrates 20 Years With HBA of F-M

by Chelsea Diederich, Communications Coordinator Twenty years ago Krista Mund was hired at the HBA of F-M as the Communications Coordinator, adding a powerhouse member to the HBA team.

Originally from Beach, ND, Mund graduated high school and attended North Dakota State University where she graduated in 1995 with a degree in mass communication.

Over her 20-year tenure she has risen the ranks from Communications Coordinator to Communications Manager to her current position of Executive Vice President.

Mund has always excelled at and enjoyed writing. She was originally hired to put together the membership directory, member newsletter and member meeting materials. Although her position has changed a lot since 1998, she continues to be a valuable asset in communicating on behalf of the industry.

The amount of professionalism and dedication Mund has brought to her position cannot be understated. Her eagle-eye editing skills and leadership has brought the HBA to produce high-quality content and impressive results.

HBA Chief Executive Officer Bryce Johnson has worked with Mund for her entire 20 years. Johnson says, “Mund’s depth of talent isn’t just writing and design, but being able to take a 5,000-foot view of an issue.” Johnson has always been impressed by Mund’s ability to attend a meeting and take comprehensive notes on an issue she is new to, then be able to turn around and write a factual article advocating for the HBA members.

Mund is a passionate advocate for the industry. In her position at the HBA, it’s not just a job for her, she is passionate about the homebuilding industry and the impact the Association has on homeownership.

In 2016 the HBA Executive Committee re-assessed roles as the Association has become more of an active community asset. As Johnson was spending more time engaged in industry meetings and having an active role in the Fargo-Moorhead metro, Mund was promoted to Executive Vice President to take on additional operational responsibilities in addition to her current communication role.

The entire HBA staff agrees that Mund is calm and level-headed when it comes to dealing with stressful situations and complex issues.

Her clear communication style and direction makes it easy to get work done more efficiently.

On behalf of the HBA staff, board of directors and entire membership, thank you Krista for your 20 years of dedication and hard work for the Association.
