Heritage Homes was recognized as a national finalist for the Dream Big Small Business Award, which honors the nation’s job creators and recognizes their contributions as drivers of economic growth.

• Park Co. Realtors in Fargo has been named to the REAL Trends 500, an annual research report identifying the country’s largest and most successful residential firms as ranked by closed transaction sides and separately by closed sales volume. Park Co. Realtors ranked 454 in closed sales and 375 in closed transaction sides among residential real estate brokerages across the United States.

• The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County at the Hjemkomst Center, Moorhead, has received a $2,500 donation from Gate City Bank. The donation will be used for general operations for the HCSCC museum and archives.

HBA of F-M first in U.S. for membership achievement

The National Association of Home Builders has recognized the HBA of F-M with one of its top national honors, the 2010 NAHB Cup for Outstanding Membership Achievement.

The award annually recognizes the home builders association that achieves the highest combined ranking in membership growth and retention in the country. Finalists were identified from seven different membership size categories and invited to submit their membership plan for consideration to be named the overall winner.

Thank you to the New Member Development Committee and the Retention Committee members and Membership Coordinator Jennifer McKinney for the great work they’ve done!

HBA of F-M President’s Report

Spread the news: Poll finds strong support from Americans for the dream of homeownership Some exciting news was shared by the National Association of Home Builders last month about Americans’ homeownership beliefs; your HBA and NAHB would like you to share the findings with your customers, legislators, colleagues, friends and neighbors.

Recently, some policymakers suggested that the homeownership and Tyrone Leslie housing choice should no longer be Heritage Homes national priorities. NAHB commissioned a national survey of 2,000 likely voters. It used two of the top pollsters in the country – one Republican and the other Democratic.

The survey makes clear that owning a home is still very much a part of the American Dream.

Americans believe that homeownership is the single best investment for middle class families and helps provide for their retirement and their children’s education.

An overwhelming majority of American voters oppose eliminating the mortgage interest deduction and would be less likely to support a candidate for Congress who wants to do away with this vital tax incentive.

Further, nearly three out of four believe that it is reasonable and appropriate for the federal government to provide tax incentives to promote homeownership, a sentiment that cuts across partisan and regional lines across the country.

Legislative Snapshot: HBA grows PAC contributors to 10 percent of membership

As always, your HBA is hard at work legislatively. This issue is packed full of updates with details on what our staff and member representatives have been doing. As I mentioned above, we celebrated June as National Homeownership Month. We also traveled to Washington, D.C., in May for NAHB’s Spring Board of Directors meetings and visits with Congressional representatives. We were able to meet with N.D. Sens. Conrad and Hoeven as well as Minn. Sens.

Klobuchar and Franken. Last month several of us traveled to Williston, N.D., for the North Dakota Association of Builders board meeting and golf tournament. Closer to home, we are involved with Fargo’s discussions of building setbacks from the Red River and Sheyenne River, Fargo’s Comprehensive Plan update and its tree ordinance discussions.

Of course all of this is tied in with our fundraising for PAC, our political action committee. NDAB-PAC and BUILD-PAC are the industry’s keys to supporting housing-

friendly candidates on both sides of the aisle on both the state and national levels. NAHB has started Club 2012 which seeks to multiply NAHB’s legislative impact by increasing its contributor base and growing the total members involved by leaps and bounds. Currently less than 2 percent of NAHB’s membership contributes to PAC. To help grow that number, all you need to do is give $20.12. Your HBA has seen 55 new contributors step up since mid-May to grow our local percentage of contributors from about 3.5 percent to 10 percent. Way to go! But, we can do even better. August Picnic filled with fun for all!

We have a fun-filled event coming up Aug. 18 with our picnic at Oak Grove. This is a casual, festive event featuring inflatable games for the kids and lots of other activities like bowling, bubbles and bean bag toss. I encourage you to bring your family, friends or spouses to the event. We go light on the business and heavy on the socializing, food and fun. Fall Parade of Homes, Fall Home Show will be here soon…

You HBA is already busy planning its fall events. Mark your calendar for the 12th annual Fall Parade of Homes running Sept. 10-11 and 17-18. We will, again, be developing a high-quality, glossy magazine complete with artists’ renderings of each home and will feature an interactive website accessible through www.hbafm.com. The magazines will be available at all Hornbacher’s stores starting Sept. 6. See next month’s issue for a listing of homes featured in this year’s event.

Builder performance guildelines required in Minnesota As of Jan. 1, Minnesota builders must, by law, include a set of performance guidelines with the contract for customers.

Guidelines are available to HBA of F-M members through the Builders Association of Minnesota. BAM’s Building Performance Guidelines were put together by a task force made up of its members. Countless hours were dedicated to creating and refining this document to provide the best possible product for builders.

Another successful year for Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades

The 13th annual Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades wrapped up on June 17. High school students from around the area participated in this program that allows them to experience hands-on a broad range of careers within the construction industry. Through building a shed from the ground up, spending time in the electrical and plumbing labs, working with concrete and masonry, taking spins in a skid steer and working with steel studs, students can determine their interest in the industry and decide which specialty might be right for them.

This year, six students completed the course and earned three college credits at Minnesota State Community and Technical College for BLDG 1100: Basic Principles of Residential and Commercial Construction. Students in this year’s Academy came from Casselton, Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo. Many use the Herdina Academy to explore the industry and determine if they want to pursue a construction-related degree. Others use the Academy to learn more about specific sectors and to help focus their interest.

The Academy has something for all students, even those who want to learn basic building skills to help fix things around their homes.

Industry support is vital to the Academy. Volunteer contractors work side-by-side with the students, who are able to learn directly from people with industry experience and get real-life examples. Many of the students are interested in working after the Academy is complete and this interaction allows contractors to see the students’ work ethic and job skill. Some students have gone on to work for contractors they met during the Academy.

In addition to the support given by the HBA of F-M, the Home Builders Care Foundation awards one scholarship each year to a student attending the Academy. This year, the scholarship went to Zachary Lively. Lively just finished his junior year at Davies High School and is interested in construction. He plans to attend M State after graduation in 2012. Lively is always working on construction projects and also enjoys working in his woodshop. Lively says his reason for attending the Academy was to gain more experience in construction as he looks forward to his Construction Tech II class he’ll be taking next school year.

Builders meet in the nation’s capitol

In mid-May I had the opportunity to join with directors of the National Association of Home Builders from around the country in Washington, D.C. at the NAHB spring board of directors meeting. Joining me from the Ken Krajsa HBA of F-M were Don Dabbert, DabState Bank & Trust bert Custom Homes; Jason Eid, Eid-Co NDAB Associate National Director Buildings, Inc.; John Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc.; Tyrone Leslie, Heritage Homes; and Bryce Johnson, HBA executive vice president.

The board meetings are always interesting as the opinions and perspectives from those in the building industry can vary significantly depending on what each area of the country the environmental, workforce or financial issues are coming from. In part, because of this, NAHB has had a lot of struggle in its efforts to modernize and alter its structure to become more efficient. At a previous meeting, NAHB had designated a group of members and staff to form a group, called the Taskforce for the Future, to make suggestions at restructuring NAHB and its inner-workings.

This taskforce gave its final report at the May meeting on issues ranging from board size, committee appointment process and meeting structure. While no action was taken, the report made many directors question what has been common place amongst the federation. Locally, your HBA is watching closely what affect these changes might have on the membership and involvement of long-time members.

The release of a national poll showing an overwhelming support for homeownership and the government incentives related to it coincided with the board meeting. For more information on this poll, please see the President’s Message on page six or page 12.

Meetings on Capitol Hill

While in our nation’s capitol, we took the opportunity to meet with Senators representing our market. An exciting moment of this trip was that, in addition to meeting with North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad and Sen. John Hoeven, we were able to meet with Sen. Al Franken and Sen. Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota.

At the meetings we stressed the important role the housing industry plays in the national economy. Right now the housing industry is struggling, therefore so is the national economy. In the past, housing has brought the country out of each recession. Congress needs to remember this and not do more to harm an already economically fragile industry.

To recap our discussion from the meeting, here is a list of issues high on the priority list for North Dakota: • The continuation of the mortgage interest deduction – Since 1913, the deduction has been the cornerstone of American housing policy. With over 70 percent of the benefit going to families making $200,000 or less, this deduction supports homeownership while helping make the tax code more progressive and beneficial to

Looking for someplace high and dry, state directors from across North Dakota met in Williston in early June at the North Dakota Association of Builders’ summer meeting and golf tournament. coordinator and me.

Williston made an ideal place for the state meeting as it boosts a booming economy and housing industry. The Williston Builders Association is the newest association in the state and just recently topped 100 members. Congratulations to them and thanks for hosting all of us. As part of the events over the two days, we boarded a bus to tour the unique housing that has sprouted up around the oil patch.

One particularly interesting stop on our tour was at the Halliburton man-camp, where trailers are lined up side-byside and literally stacked on top of each other to house the much-needed workforce.

Doreen Riedman, NDAB executive director, gave a recap of the successes from the legislative session where both pieces of legislation we put forth were passed and signed into law. Congratulations to Doreen and everyone who helped NDAB during the session. I also want to take a moment to thank all the members who took time out of their busy schedules to make a trip down to Bismarck, testify before a committee, and/or contact their legislators.

NDAB would not be successful without members taking part in the advocacy process. If you didn’t take part, I urge you to make the time when we start planning next year for the 2013 legislative session.

The meeting also covered our recent trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with Sens. Conrad and Hoeven. It was our second such meeting this year. The industry is facing several major issues. You can read more about that trip to the left.

The meeting was accompanied by the annual golf tournament which took place at the Links of North Dakota.

As always, the NDAB golf event is a great chance to get to play on the most beautiful courses in the state and also gives members the opportunity to golf alongside their local legislators.

The next NDAB meeting will be its annual board meeting Nov. 18 in Bismarck.

Public Issues Report of Area Affairs

Fargo continues work on Fargo tree preservation setback ordinance along rivers ordinance heads to City and drains Commission

The city of Fargo continues to meet to develop an ordinance relating to building along rivers. The city currently has a moratorium for building on river lots. Current policy forbids building within 450 feet from the center line of any river. The ordinance would address building setbacks along the three rivers and numerous drains that run through the city and its future growth areas.

At a recent city commission meeting, the moratorium was further defined to state that permits for existing homes on river lots could be approved if the remodeling did not result in the home being closer to the river. All new home permits still have to be approved by the full commission and meet the 450-foot setback.

This moratorium policy is temporary until the City Commission finishes studying the issue and an ordinance is approved. The new setbacks are necessary, according to city officials, to provide enough protection for the homes and the city in times of severe flooding.

The setback distance serves three primary functions. The first is simply to make sure homes will be far enough away from the river to be able to meet a proper elevation. The second is to prevent the weight of the home from causing a sloughing of the river banks. The third reason is to give the city adequate room behind the house to construct levees or other emergency measures if the situation and need arise.

The distance of 450 feet was determined using an 8:1 ratio formula. It is determined by calculating the depth of the river (from the river bottom to the top of the river bank), multiplying it by eight, and adding 100 feet. Using this calculation on the Red River’s depth results in a 450-foot setback which is what is being used in the moratorium.

The HBA continues to urge the commission to treat each waterway independently and use the same science for calculating the setback distance. This would likely lead to different distances on the Sheyenne River than on the Red River. The issue of setbacks along drains would also lead to a different number.

The HBA of F-M has also been working with city staff to prevent the ordinance from having a negative effect on existing neighborhoods. The first ordinance heard by the commission would have lead to the blighted conditions of hundreds of existing homes. The HBA cautioned the commission and asked for further consideration of the language and its negative effects.

A group of city staff and industry representatives have been working since last December to develop an ordinance to help preserve trees within the city of Fargo and in future development areas. The HBA of F-M has been an active participant during the task force meetings. The task force is currently reviewing the seventh draft and hopes to have an ordinance ready for the City Commission to review in July.

The current draft focuses on three main areas of tree preservation.

1. Riparian buffer: The ordinance looks to eliminate the removal of any naturally vegetated area near a stream, river or other body of water. The city is creating a map to delineate the area as opposed to the choosing of a footage number to apply.

2. Significant trees in existing neighborhoods: One goal of the ordinance is to help preserve the city’s existing significant trees (roughly defined as having an 18-inch diameter). This would be required in all areas of the city, new and existing. Homeowners would have to obtain approval from the city forester and either replant a tree with at least a 2-inch diameter or provide payment-in-lieu of to the fund to allow the planting elsewhere.

3. Preserving trees in new developments: The ordinance lays out a few requirements for new developments including the creation of a tree inventory to accompany new developments during the platting phase. The tree inventory would detail existing trees on property to be developed. If significant or nonsignificant trees are to be removed, the developer must follow the replacement criteria laid out within the ordinance.

We were pleased to hold our summer board of directors’ meeting in Williston June 7, followed by our state “Bogey with the Builders” golf tournament the next day at The Links of North Dakota. Great hospitality was shown by the folks from Williston and everyone learned a lot about the changes taking place in northwest North Dakota.

HBA of F-M First in nation in membership!

Congratulations to the HBA of F-M for being recognized by the National Association of Home Builders with one of its top national honors, the 2010 NAHB Cup for Outstanding Membership Achievement.

The award annually recognizes the home builders association that achieves the highest combined ranking in membership growth and retention in the country. Finalists were identified from seven different membership size categories, and invited to submit their membership plan for consideration to be named the overall winner. We’re proud to have them win, and to have a North Dakota association on top!

OSHA fall protection

Effective June 16, employers must provide conventional fall protection systems – to protect all employees engaged in residential construction activities six feet or more above a lower level.

Employers are required to follow Doreen Riedman OSHA’s Subpart M Fall Protection NDAB Executive regulation, which allows the flexibility Officer of using a written fall protection plan and alternative fall protection procedures when conventional systems are either infeasible or using them creates greater hazard.

Some of the key changes include:

• Employers will need to follow 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M Fall Protection regulations.

• Employers will be required to demonstrate the infeasibility of the required conventional fall protection systems or that such systems create a greater hazard if using alternative fall protection measures and a fall protection plan.

• The employer has the burden of establishing that it is appropriate to implement a fall protection plan.

Owning a home essential to the American Dream, study shows Despite the ups and downs of the housing market, home owners and non-owners alike consider owning a home essential to the American Dream.

That’s the key finding of a recent survey of people likely to vote in 2012 that was conducted on behalf of the National Association of Home Builders by Public Opinion Strategies of Alexandria, Va., and Lake Research Partners of Washington, D.C. “The survey results show that Americans see beyond the immediate housing market to the enduring value of home-ownership,” said NAHB Chairman Bob Nielsen, a home builder from Reno, Nev. “An overwhelming 75 percent of the people who were polled said that owning a home is worth the risk of the fluctuations in the market, and 95 percent of the home owners said they are happy with their decision to own a home,” Nielsen said.

One of the more striking aspects of the survey results is the intensity of sentiment among potential voters, according to Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners. “People believe overwhelmingly that owning a home is an anchor to the American Dream,” she said.

“It’s an anchor to your retirement, and it’s an anchor to your personal economic well-being.”

Among the other survey results:

• Homeownership and a retirement savings program are considered by voters to be their best investments.

• 80 percent of homeowners would advise a close friend or family member just starting out to buy a home.

• Saving for a downpayment and closing costs is the biggest barrier to homeownership.

• Americans believe that owning their own home is as important as being successful at their job or being able to pay for a family member’s education.

• 95 percent of homeowners say they are happy with their decision to own a home and believe that owning their own home is important.

• 73 percent of voters who do not own a home now say it is a goal of theirs to eventually buy a home.

• 83 percent of voters agree that a strong housing industry means more jobs and more money in our communities.

“Owning a home isn’t just a policy to people,” said Lake. “It isn’t just a commodity to people. It is a core value.”

This national survey of 2,000 likely 2012 voters was conducted May 3-9 by Public Opinion Strategies. It has a margin of error of ±2.19 percent.

New OSHA Residential Fall Protection Guidelines take effect June 16 On June 6, the National Association of Home Builders reported that new Occupational Safety and Health Administration residential fall protection guidelines will take effect June 16, after NAHB’s work to receive an extension on the effective date. Last December, OSHA rescinded its Interim Fall Protection Compliance Guidelines for Residential Construction (STD 03-00-001 – STD 3-0.1A), in place since 1995.

Effective June 16, employers must provide conventional fall protection systems to protect all employees engaged in residential construction activities six feet or more above a lower level. The new Compliance Guidance for Residential Construction will require employers to follow OSHA’s subpart M fall protection regulation, which allows the flexibility of using a written fall protection plan and alternative fall protection procedures when conventional systems are either infeasible or using them creates greater hazard.

NAHB Construction Safety and Health Committee Chairman Dean Mon met May 26 with Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for OSHA, regarding the change in fall protection requirements. During the meeting, OSHA reiterated that it is holding firm on its decision to retain the June 16 deadline, which will now require residential construction employers to follow OSHA’s subpart M fall protection regulation.

In chairman Mon’s memo to NAHB senior officers, Mon indicated that OSHA has committed to drafting and sending a letter to NAHB members to alleviate their concerns over possible enforcement actions, as well as agreeing to work with NAHB to identify those instances where the use of conventional fall protection may be deemed infeasible or create a greater hazard and to correct and improve OSHA’s guidance documents on residential fall protection. Here’s an excerpt from Mon’s memo: “Despite NAHB’s arguments that additional time was needed because neither our members nor OSHA is certain of how to comply with the fall protection rule, OSHA’s staff are not prepared to consistently implement or enforce the rule, and once OSHA determines what must be done, more training is needed so that home builders and trade contractors understand what they are supposed to do to comply, OSHA held firm on its decision to retain the June 16 deadline. Dr. Michaels explained that because the Interim Fall Protection Guidelines were rescinded to protect workers from fall hazards, any delay in implementation would unnecessarily leave workers at risk. He also reasoned that since OSHA had already provided more lead-in time than is standard and at least fifteen OSHA state plan states have been operating without the interim guidelines since 1995, additional lead-in time was unnecessary.

“Although OSHA rejected our request for an extension, Dr. Michaels did commit to providing enforcement flexibility and working with NAHB to develop guidance and

compliance materials. Specifically, OSHA committed to drafting and sending a letter to NAHB members to alleviate their concerns over possible enforcement actions. Dr. Michaels suggested the letter would acknowledge that: 1) if employers are showing a “good faith” effort to comply with the fall protection regulations, they will not be cited under OSHA’s fall protection regulation; 2) any builder participating in or requesting an OSHA on-site consultation will be exempt from OSHA inspections; and 3) Dr. Michaels, the OSHA administrator, would personally review any citation that builders believe are not warranted. Dr. Michaels suggested that a similar letter would also be sent to the OSHA regional offices and shared with the compliance and enforcement personnel.”

Remodelers share ongoing lead rule concerns with OMB, EPA

During May’s National Association of Home Builders’ spring board meeting in Washington, D.C., remodelers visited the Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to discuss concerns over the Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, including a proposal to implement clearance testing on specific remodeling jobs.

Ongoing problems with the rule include last year’s removal of the opt-out provision, the lack of accurate lead testing kits and serious underestimates of the rule’s compliance costs.

Under the current rule, remodelers are required to use a white paper cloth to clean work areas and then compare the color of the residue on the cloth to an EPA-supplied card to determine whether lead paint dust has been removed from painted surfaces.

Under the proposed clearance testing rule, remodelers would be required to have a lab test samples from surfaces in the work area and immediately outside it or hire a certified testing specialist to examine the home.

As well as the expense of testing, remodelers would face higher liability insurance costs under the proposal, both of which would be passed on to the home owner, making the job more costly.

OMB Reviewing Clearance Testing Proposal

In a meeting with OMB and NAHB representatives, NAHB Remodelers Chairman Bob Peterson, CGR, CAPS, president of ABD Design/Build in Fort Collins, Colo.; Bob Hanbury, CGR, president of House of Hanbury in Newington, Conn.; and Mike Nagel, CGR, CAPS, partner with Men at Work Chicago, said the EPA should revise its lead rule.

The agency failed to quantify the benefits of the rule changes, no relevant alternatives were included in the economic analysis and no small business advisory panel was convened to assess the rule, which is usually a regulatory requirement, they said.

On the matter of clearance testing, the remodelers from NAHB disputed the EPA’s claim that the new rule would raise consumer awareness of lead hazards, pointing out that consumer disclosure laws on lead already exist.

NAHB Policy Analyst Matt Watkins emphasized that existing rules already require home owners to disclose lead hazards at the time of sale and receive the EPA’s “Renovate Right” pamphlet before a renovation.

“Adding costly and unnecessary lead testing would only further confuse consumers who have expressed dislike for the costs associated with the current regulation,” Nagel said.

“Remodelers have particularly experienced confusion and opposition to the rule from home owners without children after removal of the opt-out clause,” he said.

HBA says goodbye to Events Coordinator Sarah Sutter

Time passes faster than we all think and new opportunities arise in our lives. The wonderful Sarah Sutter will be leaving the HBA of F-M to move out west with her husband. Sutter was hired January 2004 as the HBA memSarah Sutter bership coordinator and worked HBA Events Coordinator in that position for two and a half years. She then took the event coordinator position where she has been for the last five years.

Sutter is known by a large number of HBA members as she is the HBA face that correlates with the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show, Fall Home Show and Spring and Fall Parade of Homes. She is an amazing employee, coworker and friend to all at the HBA and will surely be missed.

She says that her favorite events to work with are the Spring Parade of Homes and the Horizon Awards General Membership Meeting that follows. She loves looking at all the homes and being able to reward Builders for their work.

Over the years, Sutter says that she has formed great relationships with members who have become very involved and love to volunteer for the events. She appreciates the hard work members put into events which hels make the events the successes they are each year.

“Sarah is one of a kind and will definitely be hard to replace. She works above and beyond what is expected and is blessed with being able to handle the stressful situations that her position entails. We will really miss her smile and fun-loving attitude in the office and of course her outstanding cooking and baking skills!” says HBA Executive Vice President Bryce Johnson.

She is enjoying her townhome, bought in 2009, and getting the hang of being a homeowner. She put in a vegetable garden this year and is looking forward to fresh tomatoes, peppers, peas, cucumbers and lettuce.

Builders voice concerns over proposed revisions to storm water permits

During a meeting of the National Association of Home Builders’ Environmental Issues Committee during the spring board of directors meeting in May, Builders told staff members from the Environmental Protection Agency of their concerns over the proposed Construction General Permit for storm Stella Stormwater water.

EPA Storm Water The EPA issued a revised CGP for Enthusiast public comment April 25. The CGP is the permit issued under the Clean Water Act’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program to authorize the discharge of storm water from construction sites.

On hand to discuss some of the specifics of the revised permit were Greg Schaner from the EPA’s NPDES program, and Jesse Pritts of the agency’s Office of Water. To see the presentation visit www.nahb.org/fileUpload_details. aspx?ContentID=159537.

Federal law requires the EPA to issue this permit and renew it every five years.

With the current permit set to expire this month, the EPA has proposed an extension under which the current permit would not expire until Jan. 31, 2012.

Although the CGP applies only where the EPA is the permitting authority (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Idaho, Washington, D.C., most territories and most Indian country lands) it also serves as a model for the permits issued in the delegated states.

“We appreciate the folks from the EPA coming by to talk about the construction general permit and other storm water issues,” said Bobby Bowling, chairman of the environmental issues committee and a Builder from El Paso, Texas.

“We don’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of the issues,” Bowling said, “but Schaner understands these are complex issues that cost builders a lot of time and money and energy. It’s productive for the EPA staff to hear the practical application of the rules they implement.”

The CGP regulates the discharge of storm water from construction sites that disturb one acre or more of land, and from smaller sites that are part of a common plan of development.

The permit requires operators of these sites to implement storm water controls and develop Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans.

Issues that generated extended discussion included buffer requirements, requirements for development projects involving multiple developers, required corrective actions and exceptions for rainfall that exceeds the two-year, 24hour storm event volume.

The proposed new CGP includes a number of modifications, many of which are to implement the new Effluent Limitations Guidelines (ELGs) and New Source Performance Standards for Construction and Development Point Sources, which was published Dec. 1, 2009.

In addition to the CGP requirements, the ELG rule requires construction site operators to meet restrictions on erosion and sediment control, pollution prevention and stabilization.

It also includes a numeric turbidity limit for certain larger construction sites, but effective Jan. 4, 2011, EPA stayed with the numeric limit of 280 NTU that was published in the 2009 rule.

The agency will propose a revised numeric limit in a future rulemaking. For now, the proposed CGP includes a placeholder for a final number.

To ensure that the agency has sufficient time to finalize the new CGP, the EPA is also proposing the extension of its expiration date until Jan. 31, 2012.

NAHB is concerned that if the agency does not extend the existing permit, it will put existing permit holders in limbo and prohibit new permittees from obtaining CGPs for new projects.

Richard Holmes began working the industry as a high school student working construction jobs after school and throughout the summer. In 1973, Holmes and a partner worked together erecting steel buildings and grain storage systems. After two years, they Richard Holmes Custom Building and decided to go their own ways and Holmes founded Custom Building and Remodeling, LLC Remodeling, LLC. The company originally focused on steel buildings for a couple years and then moved into home building. When interest rates went up drastically, remodeling became a service it offers. Today, the company works mainly with framing, but is taking on more commercial work and also does remodeling when there is time.

“The newest thing with us is our in-house design and permitting service. We can take the customer’s idea and design the home or project and work with the city through permitting and code requirement issues. This deals mostly with commercial projects,” says Holmes.

The company’s assets, which Holmes feels sets it apart from competitors, include the amount of work that is completed in-house.

“We frame the home, roof it, insulate it, hang the sheetrock, tape it, paint it along with the siding, soffit and fascia.

Then we move inside and can do the trim, hardwood floors, ceramic tile, cultured stone, etc. I find it very beneficial that we have the ability to keep so much of the project in our hands and it keeps us in control of the project,” he says.

Holmes describes his job as a “dream job.” He couldn’t imagine not being able to work outside for his job and he says that every project is exciting because you never know what you’re going to get to work on next.

“It is such an enjoyable profession and I am so thankful that I get to do something that I love every day. There are so many great people you meet in this business. Whether it be your customers, co-workers or colleagues you always meet the most wonderful people in the Fargo-Moorhead area,” he says.

With every job, the ones you love or the ones you don’t, there are always challenges that must be faced. For Holmes and Custom Building and Remodeling, LLC, there is always an obstacle to overcome: staying as efficient as possible while being up-to-date with all the codes and regulations.

“We do our best to give each and every customer 100 percent and I think we do a really great job of that. We always do our best to cut costs without cutting quality. New ideas and practices are always welcome to help make our

In 1995, Todd Rodeman had a history of working seasonal road construction doing concrete/asphalt work and filling his winters with helping local masons with projects. An opportunity arose when a local contractor was in need of a good lead man on his project. Rodeman worked with the contractor to create Gemstone Masonry and, within one year, Rodeman held 100 percent ownership of the company.

Gemstone Masonry Operating Co., Inc., as it is known today, originally focused on fireplaces and stone and brick veneer in the residential sector of the building industry.

The company became incorporated two years ago and has continued to grow in the midst of a poor economy. It now specializes in various areas including concrete foundation, block work, brick and stone masonry, excavating and decorative concrete.

“We take on a lot of difficult or complicated jobs that homeowners or contractors have a hard time finding someone to do. I don’t think we’ve ever turned down a job offer,” says Rodeman.

Rodeman finds his company doing well in the tough economy due to the foundation of the company being focused on pushing forward with integrity and fortitude while always having the customer’s best interest in mind.

“There is some difficulty in finding jobs right now as there are a lack of projects being done during the slow economy, but we have managed to continue to receive bids on enough projects to stay busy. Recently, we’ve had to spend three times our energy bidding projects to create the revenue needed to make up for low margins,” he says.

Although times aren’t how they were five or ten years ago, Rodeman still loves his job and enjoys putting together a great self-sufficient crew that he knows will satisfy every customer.

“If you’re starting out in the industry, always remember to do quality work and that honesty is the best policy. If you did it wrong, fix it. If you don’t, you will not make it in the long run,” advises Rodeman.

“We strive for customer satisfaction by installing quality brick and stone and focusing on the detail work involved on each and every masonry project. We also work very hard to build and maintain great customer relationships.”

What is the latest trend in your business/industry?

“We are seeing a lot of natural stone, thin veneer jobs going up. It seems to cost a little more than the cultural stone, but the curb appeal is well worth it and there is also a wide variety of styles to choose from.”

“The moisture problems are always the biggest challenges. We have to make sure all our along with previous flashings are all installed correctly because we need to be aware if a window flashing fails it can affect the entire project. The same goes for if an ice shield on a roof is put on wrong.

“There has to be zero tolerance with flashing. Great caution needs to go into the project and it needs to be done perfectly each time especially with our climate.”

Remodelers Council constructs wheelchair accessibility ramp for Moorhead resident

On June 2, HBA of F-M’s Remodelers Council built a wheelchair accessibility ramp for Moorhead resident Dan Amundson at 521 S. 6th St. (near Concordia College). Contractors took time out of their work schedule to spend a day at Amundson’s home to help him live a little easier.

The Remodelers Council coordinated the project with Freedom Resource Center, an advocacy organization designed to assist people with disabilities in achieving and maintaining independent lifestyles. The city of Moorhead Neighborhood Services approved a Community Development Block Grant for reimbursement funds Dan Amundson, Moorhead resident, uses his ramp to cover material costs. The grant was applied for by built by HBA of F-M Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation.

Amundson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1990. He is almost always wheelchair-bound, except for short distances inside the house when he can use a walker. According to Amundson’s long-time partner, Deborah Posch, stairs have become almost impossible for him to negotiate. She had to actually lift Amundson’s legs for him to get him down the stairs. Without her help he wasn’t able to leave his home.

Amundson had a permanent smile on his face throughout the day as he accompanied the RC members as they worked in his front yard to build the ramp.

He and Posch were so grateful for the effort of these members and it has truly changed Amundson’s life.

Remodelers Council FOCUS: Minnkota Windows, Inc.

Dave Velaski is a sales and service manager at Minnkota Windows, Inc. and has been a member of the Remodelers Council for almost five years.

“I decided to join the Council as a way Dave Velaski to begin my involvement with the buildMinnkota ers and remodelers in the Fargo-Moorhead Windows, Inc. area when I first started working as a sales representative for Minnkota Windows,” says Velaski. “I had heard of some of the Council’s projects in the community like the ramp projects and the Fall Home Show that also intrigued me.”

Velaski says he enjoys being an RC member because it allows him to meet and work with many people in the industry as well as create great friendships. He has been able to gain a better understanding of other members involvement in the Association and industry as well as their individual businesses through the Council.

“Meeting real people in the community is also a great piece of the Council. It makes my day when I get to be part of really making a difference in someone else’s life!” he adds.

Over his five years of involvement, Velaski has helped with the Fall Home Show, RENEW House, build bunk beds and multiple ramp projects.

“I truly enjoy building the ramps as it is the most selffulfilling project for me. To see the excitement on some-

one’s face when they get to use their ramp for the first time is unexplainable,” he explains. “It’s an overwhelming feeling to know you were part of making a huge difference in someone’s life.”

Velaski says he encourages members to join if they want to meet new friends/colleagues and give back to the community in which they live.

“It is a great group of people to work with and I know I will always have them to call on or count on for their expertise and/or referrals,” he says.

Minnkota Windows, Inc. manufactures and distributes custom-sized vinyl windows and doors for single- and multi-family homes as well as light commercial applications.

According to Velaski, the company prides itself on manufacturing high-performance, quality products ranging from casements to patio doors and every style in between.

“By offering the best warranty in the industry and two-week delivery, we are among the best vinyl window companies in the upper Midwest,” he adds.

Velaski has a bachelor’s degree in community health education from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has worked for Minnkota Windows, Inc. for the past seven years (three as a field service technician, two as a retail/ contractor sales representative and two as the sales and service manger). Prior to working at Minnkota Windows, Inc., he worked for three years at ABC Seamless as a siding installer, warehouse manager and windows manager.

The foundation, created in 1993 by the Home Builders Association of FargoMoorhead, is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization.

It was established with funds donated

by HBA members, fundraising events and the HBA itself. The purpose for its creation was to provide an outlet for the builder, remodeler, and companies related to the building industry to show the community that there is more to the building industry than demolition, construction, and remodeling.

The HBA of F-M handles the administrative duties for the foundation at no charge. Any contribution designated to the foundation goes directly to the foundation and its charitable work.

Support the Association, Foundation that supports you

Summer is finally here and hopefully it finds our HBA of F-M members busy.

As I reflect on how fortunate many of us are to be busy and to live in an area that has not seen the sharp swings in the building industry, I feel we owe it to our Association and Foundation to do what we can to support both organizations. Theodore Roosevelt said, “Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.” That idea has become more and more important over the years as there are many issues facing the industry as a whole.

I believe the best way to support and give back to our industry is to become a Triple Player. The Triple Player initiative was developed in order to give our members a way to support all the areas of your Association and Foundation. Triple Players pay HBA membership dues, donate at least $365 to Home Builders Care and give at least $365 to North Dakota Association of Builder’s Political Action Committee (NDAB-PAC). As a member, your dues help the Association support you by providing education, trade shows, Parades, marketing opportunities, networking events and plenty more. Donations to Home Builders Care support charitable projects like the RENEW house completed in 2009, scholarships for college students in construction programs and hands-on learning experience for high school students. Investment in NDAB-PAC supports the legislative voice of the industry, supports candidates favorable to the building industry and works on issues that are facing home building today. Honestly, I can’t think of a reason NOT to become a Triple Player! Get started today, you’ll be proud that you did.

The 8th Annual Charity Ride is coming up Aug. 20. Get your motorcycle, classic car, street rod or hot rod in tip-top shape and ready to go.

Fall Scholarships available soon

HBC fall scholarships will be available soon. High school seniors interested in pursuing a construction-related degree at North Dakota State College of Science or Minnesota State Community and Technical College are eligible to apply. HBC also has post-secondary scholarships for student chapter members at NDSCS, M State, North Dakota State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead. Applications are due Sept. 23. Framework for the Future is the Home Builders Care of FargoMoorhead Foundation’s long-term fundraising initiative to build its endowment fund to maintain current giving, support additional projects and provide for endowment growth. Get revved up for the Charity Ride Aug. 20

The 8th Annual Home Builders Care Charity Ride is coming up Aug. 20. Get your motorcycles, classic cars, street rods or hot rods shined, tuned up and ready to go for a beautiful ride. The planning committee is busy organizing this year’s route.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at U Motors, 3525 38th St. S., Fargo and the riders head out at 10:30 a.m. We will also have a second starting point at the Lakeland General Store and Cornfield Café in Dunvilla, Minn., if the Fargo site doesn’t work for you. Registration in Dunvilla starts at 11:30 a.m. and the ride continues on its route at noon.

A late lunch/early supper prepared by Nodak Stores will be included on the ride. Last year’s ice cream break was a huge hit and the planning committee is working out details in hopes of offering it again this year!

This event is a great way to support Home Builders Care Foundation. HBA conducts membership survey

The HBA of F-M emailed an online survey to the membership recently. Thank you to all members who participated. The Association received over 50 responses. Those who replied and included their name were entered in a drawing to win a free morning registration for the HBA’s Golf Outing June 13.

The survey included 50 questions requesting feedback on general HBA services, events, public affairs/advocacy issues, educational offerings, communications and Home Builders Care Foundation. Overall, feedback was positive, but there are areas for improvement. The HBA is in the second year of a three-year strategic plan, and this feedback will help guide staff, committees and the board when working with the plan. Many of the questions on this year’s survey were openended and covered all of the HBA’s services. Members resoundingly recommended the HBA maintain a steady focus on promoting the importance and value of homeownership, supporting industry-friendly political candidates and maintaining a presence in local, state and national government to give the industry a voice. Reducing property taxes, promoting housing incentives for consumers and allowing easier financing of projects are major concerns to HBA members. A common worry is also the over-reaching arm of government, specifically the Environmental Protection Agency, noted by members.

New non-profit in town: Rebuilding Together Fargo Moorhead Area, Inc

Rebuilding Together Fargo-Moorhead Area, Inc. was incorporated Jan. 1 to serve communities located in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. It is the leading national nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners. These projects are accomplished through the hard work of more than 200 affiliates nationwide.

Rebuilding Together Fargo-Moorhead Area, Inc.’s mission is to offer home repair and renovation services, free of charge, for low income families with an emphasis on helping the elderly, people with disabilities and Veterans. Its goal is to preserve affordable homeownership. Preserving homeownership stabilizes communities from blight, vandalism, and criminal activity. Committee Briefs Education

This committee develops education programs for the Association. It provides an abundance of choices to fulfill continuing education credits required by Minnesota for builder licensing. The committee’s purpose is to assist the development, professionalism and profitability of HBA members and the industry.

• 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. July 14 EPA Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule at Cass County Electric Cooperative. Training is done by the UND Environmental Training Institute. Class is also approved for eight hours of Minnesota contractor continuing education credits. Member cost $170 / Non-member cost $255 • Lunch & Learns are held from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. one day each month at the HBA of F-M, 1802 32nd Ave. S., Fargo. July 26 will feature, “Managing Finances for Small Businesses” Cost is $10. See the insert in this issue to register.

This committee handles programming and entertainment for the General Membership Meetings, coordinates the annual HBA Golf Outing, and the Home & Garden Show. Its purpose is to provide creative ideas, and support for coordination as well as logistics during each of these events.

Membership: Retention & New Member Development

This combined committee looks for new and creative ways of recruiting and welcoming new members, and develops programs to remind members of the value of their membership. It explores reasons why members join and leave, is responsible for contacting all members and also reviews the NAHB membership status report on a monthly basis.

• The May 2011 membership report indicates a member retention rate of 90.7 percent, with 816 members: 222 Builders and 580 Associates. A total of 246 renewals have been made so far this year.

• The committee’s 2011 goal is to recruit 65 new members (22 Builders and 43 Associates) and achieve a retention rate of 93 percent. We are well on our way to reaching this goal! Please notify Jennifer at (701) 2325846 or jennifer@hbafm.com, if you have any leads or would like to get involved.

Parade of Homes

A “Parade of Homes” is designed to promote HBA builder members to consumers. It serves to boost home sales and raises the level of recognition for builder members. This committee is responsible for all aspects of coordinating and promoting the spring and fall Parades.

• The Spring Parade of Homes was a great success, featuring 58 homes by 40 builders.

• The Fall Parade of Homes is coming up quick: Sept.

10-11 and 17-18. Builders look for entry forms in the mail!

Public Issues

The Public Issues Committee is responsible for keeping tabs on governmental action that affects the industry and then informing the industry on the status of those issues.

• A task force has been established to review the infrastructure requirements in the city of Moorhead. The group has commented on the cost analysis provided by the city and is now waiting for the city to meet. The purpose of the group’s recommendations is to ultimately reduce infrastructure costs.

• The HBA has been reviewing the tree preservation ordinance created by the city of Fargo and is working with a group of city staff to help formulate the draft.

The draft is in its seventh re-write and will be forwarded on to the City Commission sometime in July.

• The HBA was part of a group who went to Washington D.C. and met with the congressional delegation for North Dakota. The main discussion items were the mortgage interest deduction and the funding for a Fargo-Moorhead diversion. The HBA is working on a follow up letter and setting up meetings in the state.

• The city of Fargo has passed river setbacks so there will be no building allowed within 450 feet of the center line of the river. The official ordinance is still being worked on. The committee formed is discussing whether there should be variation on distance based on different rivers. Also, what the setbacks should be along drains and how the city should handle the increase in base flood elevations.

PAC Committee

This committee works with the Public Issues Committee to coordinate fundraising efforts for North Dakota Association of Builders’ political action committee (NDAB-PAC) and the National Association of Home Builder’s political action committee (BUILD-PAC). It is involved with setting guidelines for PAC giving policies and its members have the final vote on distribution of PAC funds the Association distributes to local candidates running for office.

• Total PAC fundraising for 2011 is over $19,000! Make your contribution today.

Remodelers Council

This council represents the remodeling industry in the local HBA of F-M through national Remodelers membership. It has its own dues and community service projects and is the committee behind planning the Fall Home Show.

• The 2011 Fall Home Show is scheduled for Oct. 1-2 at the Fargo Civic Center. This year’s featured speaker is MS. Simplicity.

• The Council recently constructed a wheelchair accessibility ramp for Dan Amundson in Moorhead. Thank you to all those who volunteered! It is always a great joy to help in this way throughout the community. The Council has another ramp project in the works and will hopefully be able to have the build in July.

Meet your Events Committee Chair: Shannon Stumpf

Shannon Stumpf, Cass County Electric Cooperative, has been involved with the Events Committee for nine years and became the chair of the committee in the Fall of 2010.

She became involved when her boss suggested she join a committee at the HBA of F-M to meet people and learn more about the building industry.

“I am so happy I became involved. I enjoy the interaction between members and hearing the variety of ideas that can make the HBA events better each and every year,” she says.

Shannon Stumpf Stumpf believes that the Events Committee is important Cass County to the HBA because it helps manage and conjure new ideas Electric Cooperative for the Association’s largest event each year.

“The Home & Garden Show is such a strong community event as well as the HBA’s number one event that without a committee that is solely based to help this event grow stronger the show would eventually become stagnant and lose the public’s interest,” she says.

Outside of work and her involvement with the Association, Stumpf and her family enjoy spending quality time camping and plan to do as much as possible of it this summer.

contention that clearance testing would improve the cleaning habits of contractors, pointing to previous research by NAHB and the EPA showing that remodelers leave renovation areas cleaner than they find them and, in most cases, with significantly reduced levels of lead dust.

“The EPA provided no data or evidence that clearance testing is a necessary addition to the rule,” said Hanbury. “In fact, the rule is so new that they don’t have data about how successful it is at reaching the goal of reducing lead hazard exposures in children and pregnant women.”

OMB is currently reviewing the clearance testing requirements before the changes are finalized.

Losing Business

Looking at his business records over the last year under the lead rule, Peterson said that 15 of the 16 project leads he had on pre-1978 homes would have qualified for the opt-out provision, which was previously available to homes where there were no children or pregnant women residing.

Eleven of the 15 home owners said they would have opted out, and the owners of the one home where there were small children did not move forward with the remodeling job due to its cost.

Peterson’s company completed two projects under the lead rule, both for older couples who would have signed the opt-out waiver before it was rescinded.

In the first project (which included remodeling two bathrooms and a closet) the additional cost for t compliance was $2,140. A second project to replace three windows cost an additional $420 per window, an added $1,260 for the project.

“I’m seeing in my remodeling business that not only are customers choosing not to undertake remodeling work but less work is ultimately done because of the need to pay for the increased costs of the lead rule,” said Peterson.

“This is especially frustrating for home owners who would have qualified for the opt-out waiver,” he said.

Paul Emrath, NAHB vice-president of survey and housing policy research, criticized the EPA’s economic analysis for failing to estimate how much business remodelers would lose as a result of the compliance costs.

He provided OMB with results from NAHB’s Remodeling Market Index showing that in response to the rule’s cost potential customers are switching to uncertified contractors, taking on do-it-yourself projects or simply choosing to do less remodeling.

Additionally, the remodelers explained that requiring contractors to conduct lead clearance testing is wholly inconsistent with the federal regulatory distinctions between renovation and abatement activities. Requiring remodelers to conduct clearance testing and pass clearance levels turns them into abatement workers, which was not intended by Congress or the regulation, they said.

In a meeting with Mike Nagel, a remodeler from Chicago, EPA Assistant Administrator Steve Owens asked if NAHB could collect data from remodelers on actual costs for a project under the lead rule and share the results with the agency.

Amanda and her husband Tyler are settling into their parental roles as their little one, Kaylee Ohlsen, is already three months old! Oh, how the time flies. She’s noticed her motherly instincts showing more as she finds herself rocking while standing, even though there’s no baby in her arms.

Rocky has been busy planning for a new job come October.

That new job of being a daddy, of course! His wife, Shelli, is due on Oct. 31. Spooky! If you are wondering if the baby will be a boy or a “ghoul,” they recently found it that they will be having a baby girl. Congratulations! He has also managed to sneak in some time to play in his usual summer softball league.

Alison has a full summer ahead of her and it’s barely begun. Five weddings this summer have kept her busy and her spending tight!

Her sister and brother-in-law, Erin and Luis, live in Spain, but will be home the entire month of July.

Alison has a small family reunion over the 4th of July and has also planned a trip to Medora and the Mount Rushmore with Erin and Luis. She is also playing sand volleyball every Tuesday night, weather permitting.

Lunch & Learn - On the local level, our Lunch & Learn program has been a fixture at the HBA for about four years. Classes are offered over the lunch hour each month covering everything from business plans and time management to increasing sales and managing people.

N.D. Professional Builder, NDAB offerings - On the state level, you can earn your North Dakota Professional Builder designation by completing seven hours of continuing education each year and paying a fee. Most of HBA’s local programs qualify. An NDPB designation is a great way to market your company and professionalism to fellow members and consumers. Minnesota contractor continuing education - Your HBA is planning its menu of classes for Minnesota contractor continuing education classes Jan. 18 and Feb. 15.

Electrical contractor continuing education – The HBA will, once again, hold a continuing education class for electrical contractors on Jan. 13. The class will be taught by Tim Pull from the North Dakota State Community College in Wahpeton and held at the Skills and Technology Training Center, in north Fargo.

Power-limited continuing education – Your HBA will hold its second power limited technician continuing education class in March.

Lead paint regulations – As of April 22, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency requires all renovations disturbing painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes must be done by a certified lead renovator. This includes, but is not limited to, modification, repair, sanding, scraping, removal of building component, window replacement, weatherization, etc. Certified renovators must go through eight hours of training by an EPA certified instructor. On top of that, the company must also submit a firm application to the EPA along with a $300 fee. Your HBA has held almost 10 classes and its next one is set for July 14.

EPA Remodeling, Renovation & Painting (RRP) Rule Effective Aug. 1, 2011 - Minnesota will require lead certification when issuing permits.

Municipalities will be verifying lead certification for residential builders, remodelers, roofers and manufactured home installers when requesting a permit to work on homes constructed prior to 1978.

Effective April 22 - building and remodeling firms must have one or more “certified renovators” assigned to each job where lead-based paint is disturbed. Eight hours of training is required to become a “certified renovator.”

In addition to having a certified renovator(s), firms working in pre-1978 homes will need to submit an application to become certified before offering or performing the work covered under the rules. The EPA has up to 90 days to certify or recertify a firm once it receives a complete application.

• Firm certifications cost $300 and are valid for five years.

• Firms must apply for re-certification.

The term renovation covers all activities done for compensation that disturb painted surfaces including most repair, remodeling and maintenance activities such as window replacement, weatherization and demolition.

What structures?

The RRP rule applies to all renovation work performed in residential houses, apartments and child-occupied facilities such as schools and daycare centers built before 1978.

Raise money for children’s health; attend Cully’s Kids Celebrity Weekend Lineup of events include silent and live auction, golf scramble, picnic

Minnesota Wild hockey player Matt Cullen and wife Bridget are ready to kick off another great Cully’s Kids Celebrity Weekend July 14-16. These three days are full of great events and amazing people.

New this year are the silent and live auctions happening 7 – 10 p.m. July 14 at Usher’s House restaurant in Moorhead.

Purchase your $50 ticket at the door that directly benefits the Foundation and enjoy a great night of placing bids, appetizers, drinks and a great socializing atmosphere.

Other events happening throughout this event include a Celebrity Golf Scramble at Oxbow Country Club July 15 and the Cully’s Kids Picnic at Newman Outdoor Field July 16.

HBA of F-M member and Matt Cullen’s father, Terry Cullen, Cullen Insulation, has been involved with the program since it began and always enjoys helping out and seeing those in the community and surrounding areas that come out to support the event.

“We see a tremendous amount of support from professional athletes and are extremely thankful for the time they spend with the children. It is very special for everyone involved,” he says.

Funds raised by this event and other donations throughout the year help award grants to many area organizations: Kamp KACE, Hope, Inc., Dakota Medical Foundation, Make-A-Wish, Riding on Angel’s Wings and TNT Kids Fitness and Outdoor Adventure Fund. In 2010, the Cully’s Kids Celebrity Weekend raised $397,000!

“Being involved in this event has an extremely positive effect on everyone, including myself. The feeling you get when you’re able to help out those who are less fortunate is something you can’t put into words,” says Cullen. “There are a lot of people who have given a lot of time to make this event successful and it’s always rewarding to see the support we have. You can see it in the children’s faces how excited they are when they meet the celebrities. It’s priceless.”

Details about the Foundation Cullen Children’s Foundation, founded in 2003 by Matt and Bridget Cullen, provides financial resources to organizations that support children’s health care needs with an emphasis on cancer. It works to help improve the quality of life for children and families dealing with health care needs and increase the general population’s awareness of the severity of children’s health issues.
