• Bergstrom Electric received awards for two projects in the Independent Electrical Contractor’s Awards of Excellence in an electrical construction competition. It received awards for the Bismarck State College Aquatic and Wellness Center, a 62,000-square-foot facility heated with a biomass heating system that burns wood chips and can also be converted to burn natural gas. Bergstrom designed and built the electrical system for the entire building and the King Cole furnace heating system, as well as a one-of-a-kind rail system to light the pool area. The company was also recognized for the Standing Rock Elementary School which is a 66,000 square-foot building that includes 30 classrooms and is LEED certified.

• The Moorhead State Community and Technical College Foundation received $1,000 worth of equipment from Dakota Supply Group, Alexandria, Minn. The Armstrong air to air heat pump will provide students with the essential equipment for hands-on learning in the refrigeration/air conditioning program.

• Raeanna Benjamin has joined the personal lines department and Holly Fitch has joined the commercial lines department of Dawson Insurance, Fargo.

• AJ Slavinsky has joined Wrigley Mechanical in Fargo as quality control manager.

• Fiebiger, Swanson, West Co., has promoted Tina Bichler to supervisor in its Moorhead office.

She received her certified public accounting degree in 2006 and specializes in individual and business income tax, compilation and review of financial statements and audits of 401(k) and ESOP plans. Christy Jones and John Reimer have been promoted to manager positions in the Fargo office.

• Nor-Son, Inc. received two Contractor of the Year Awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Nor-Son’s represen-

tatives accepted the awards at the 14th Annual Contractor of the Year Awards ceremony at the McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis Nov. 19. In recognition of outstanding achievement, awards were received in the following categories: in Entire House Under $250,000, a first place award was received for the Dutch Colonial Remodel/Addition, Brainerd, Minn.; and in Best of the Decade, an Honorable Mention award for the Historic Log Renovation, Bay Lake, Minn.

• Cornerstone Bank has promoted Kelly Latozke to customer service representative and mortgage loan processor and Nikki Kaberna to mortgage processor.

• Gary Bloom is the new owner of Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling, West Fargo. Bloom has been an employee of the franchise since it opened in 1995, most recently as the general manager.

• Moore Engineering has hired David Roedel as a project manager in the transportation department of its West Fargo office.

• Roers Construction & Development, Inc., of Fargo has hired Mark Foley as a construction project manager and Jake Voigt as an assistant construction project manager.

• The Fargo-Moorhead Area Association of Realtors’ annual “Perk up” coffee drive in November collected more than 300 pounds of coffee, which was donated to Churches United for the Homeless, Moorhead.

• State Bank & Trust employees Toni Huck, Carolyn LiebJorgensen, Amy Jo Lindstaedt, Cindy Lindsteadt, Karna Nelson, Kristi Nielsen and Gary Tschumperlin pooled their Pay it Forward funds and donated $6,000 to the Back Pack and Daily Bread programs.

• Coldwell Banker First Realty has joined RISMedia’s recently launched Real Estate Information Network. REIN is a formalized network of real estate brokerage firms that have earned status within their

HBA of F-M President’s Report

Reminder: Feb. 1 filing deadline for builders to get property tax exemption Happy New Year! I am honored to be serving the Association and the building industry as your 2011 HBA of F-M president. While our area has been buffered from the worst economy-wise, we realize that many members are struggling to make ends meet in their personal lives and businesses.

Times are tough, and it has not gone Tyrone Leslie unnoticed by your board and staff. We Heritage Homes look forward to a great 2011 and have proposed another balanced budget for the coming year. We are prepared to make cuts if the need arises with minimal impact to member benefits.

The bottom line: our membership is very supportive. At over 90 percent member retention, the HBA of F-M has one of the highest rates in the nation, and we exceeded our goal for new member recruitment last year. Thank you for your continued support of the Association that speaks for your industry and guards against increased regulatory costs.

Thank you to Terry Becker, Terry Becker Construction, LLC, for his work and commitment last year. The president is called upon time after time to be the HBA’s spokesperson for media issues and our public events. Terry did a wonderful job of representing our industry. My goal is to continue spreading the word on why now is a great time for homeownership. I, and your HBA, do everything possible to refute negative media reports that may be unbalanced and tell a positive side of the story out.

Time is now for builders to take advantage of tax incentives

We want to remind builders of the legislation change enacted last year that allows them to qualify for $150,000 off the property tax valuation of homes under construction in Fargo and West Fargo. This change came about in the 2009 North Dakota legislative session and was approved by our Fargo and West Fargo city commissioners.

You must file for the exemption by Feb. 1 or miss out on the chance. The exemption is limited to five properties the builders select at the beginning of the year, and the list does not rotate. The exemption can save builders up to $13,000 in each city. See more details and contact phone numbers for questions on page 11.

Congratulations to John Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc., as he was named North Dakota Association of Builders “Builder of the Year” at its Annual Meeting in November in Minot. He won the local Builder of the Year

award in October this year and in 2009. He also won local and state Builder of the Year in 2001. Wow! There was a lengthy article detailing John’s achievements and commitment to our industry in the October Plains Builder. The list of what he does for the Association is tremendous and he represented the HBA of F-M well.

The Forum is selling ads for the guide inserted in the newspaper before the show. This is the official guide and is published in conjunction with the HBA. HBA of F-M in running for Membership Cup

The 2010 National Association of Home Builders Cup for Outstanding Membership Achievement recognizes one local association each year for its most outstanding membership efforts. The top association from each group size (HBA of F-M is in the second-largest group size) with the highest combined percentage increase in membership growth and retention will be recognized for its efforts. The one winning association will be chosen from the seven qualifying associations after a review of its annual membership plan according to the following criteria: • Submitting a written membership plan • Achieving the purpose and goal of the annual plan • Integration of the plan into association-wide activities • Member-wide involvement • Short-term and year-long membership development initiatives • Balanced approach to recruitment and retention efforts • Promotion of HBA core benefits/services and of the 3-in-1 membership At the end of the Third quarter of the 2010 Annual Competitions, the following seven associations from each group size are in the lead: 77.22 percent Group 1 Capital Region BA, La. Meet your elected official: Dave Piepkorn

Dave Piepkorn is a current Fargo city commissioner. He was first elected in 2008 as amember of the Fargodome Authority. He ran for the position because he didn’t agree with views of the two incumbents and decided to put a step forward with his views and run for office.

Issues most important to Piepkorn include flood control, public safety, conDave Piepkorn Fargo City tinued city growth and economic vitality.

Commissioner Future issues for Fargo, in Piepkorn’s opinion, include permanent flood protection and economic growth.

One of his favorite aspects of the job is the ability to wear many different hats.

“I learn a great deal from the variety of people I encounter, and I love helping my hometown continue to thrive!” he says.

The thing he admits to not being fond of when it comes to his position is the time commitment.

For the HBA, Piepkorn says he hopes to see the home building industry continue its important role in the economic health of this region. The economy has held on here in North Dakota and he hopes it can continue to pull itself out of the tough times and back to its thriving potential.

Piepkorn advises those interested in running for office to, “Go for it! It is very rewarding and a great experience.”

Builders qualify for $150,000 off the property tax valuation of their homes under construction in Fargo and West Fargo thanks to recent legislation passed in North Dakota and approved by the City Commissions.

What you need to know – • Builders must file for the exemption by Feb. 1 or will miss out on the chance.

• Exemption is limited to only five properties picked at the beginning of the year. The list does not rotate.

• Exemption is worth $150,000 off the valuation of the structure and does not include the value of the land.

NDAB board meets in Minot

The North Dakota Association of Builders held its board of directors and awards banquet in Minot in November.

The meeting included directors from Dickinson, Bismarck-Mandan, Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot and Williston associations. The HBA of F-M sent Don Dabbert Jr., Dabbert Custom Homes; Jason Eid, Eid-Co Buildings, Inc.; John Chris Lind Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Chris Lind Custom Homes Fargo, Inc.; Ken Krajsa, State Bank & NDAB State Director Trust; Tyrone Leslie, Heritage Homes and Chris Lind, Chris Lind Custom Homes as directors of the state board. Also attending from the HBA of F-M were Executive Vice President Bryce Johnson and Toby Christensen, Camrud-Foss Concrete Constr., Inc. The most exciting part of the weekend was submitting our local Associate of the Year (Toby Christensen, Camrud-Foss Concrete Constr., Inc.) and Builder of the Year (John Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc.) for consideration on the state level. At the awards banquet that evening, our HBA was proud to have John Gunkelman awarded with the honor of State Builder of the Year.

Joining us at the board meeting was National Association of Home Builders Chairman Bob Jones and National Area 10 Chairman Wayne Foster. Jones and Foster shared their insights into the struggles facing NAHB and the national housing market. They also shared NAHB’s vision for the future and which issues in Congress will be a priority over the next two years.

The majority of the board meeting revolved around the upcoming legislative session, issues the industry may face this year, and what NDAB has done to prepare. While specifics on legislation was a few weeks away from being known, as bills won’t be written until after the session starts, issues on appraisals, design professionals, wiring standards, taxes, and funding for major infrastructure in the West and flood protection in the East are expected to rise to the top of the list.

The North Dakota Association of Builders is working hard to prepare for the fast-paced legislative session starting Jan. 4. Even though the first day of session is not until after the New Year, legislators have already traveled to Bismarck for an organizational session and hundreds of advocates, like NDAB, have been meeting and preparing their own legislative agendas.

NDAB continues to advocate on behalf of the industry in front of numerous governmental bodies as groups try to get their policies and priorities in place before the Capitol is brimming with people and everyone’s time is limited. NDAB has recently attended meetings on energy valuations during appraisals, architectural standards, electrical wiring standards, building codes and also met within the Association on what priorities and legislation NDAB should put forth.

NDAB is holding its legislative reception the evening of Feb. 7 in Bismarck.

The reception is once again a joint event with the N.D. Realtors Association and is open to all members. Everyone is urged to attend! Every legislator will be invited and the reception has been a successful event in the past. It is a chance to put our industry in front of legislators, mingle with lawmakers and let them know your concerns. This is one of the most important events that take place during the legislative session and NDAB asks that, if possible, you make time to attend.

NAHB Chairman Bob Jones issues statement on Deficit Commission’s plan to change the MID

Dec. 1, 2010 - Bob Jones, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders and a home builder from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., issued the following statement in response to the final plan unveiled today by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

“While we commend the hard work of the President’s deficit commission to improve the nation’s fiscal situation, this is simply the wrong approach to the problem. It would put a huge tax increase on millions of middle-class home owners by eliminating or devaluing the mortgage interest deduction. The consequences would be devastating for housing and the economy. This would further depress home prices, putting countless more homeowners underwater and triggering a new wave of foreclosures. Eliminating or scaling back this vital housing deduction will shrink the local tax base of many communities, causing already cash-strapped state and local governments to further cut jobs and essential services. Given the extreme fragility of the housing market, with 21 percent of construction workers currently idled, tampering with the mortgage interest deduction is just not sound public policy.”

Heritage Homes gives home tour to Schlossman YMCA class

Heritage Homes took the Arthur’s Treehouse classroom, ages three and four, from Schlossman YMCA daycare through a tour of one of their homes in December. The week of the field trip the children were learning all about construction and this opportunity offered a perfect chance for hands-on, real-life experience.

“The kids had a great time looking and learning about the house. They were so excited to get hard hats and t-shirts! I would like to give a special “Thank You” to Heritage Homes for taking time in their day to take us around,” says Tara Benson, Arthur’s Treehouse head teacher.

NAHB brings stakeholders together for Third appraisal summit

National Association of Home Builders hosted an Appraisal Summit at the National Housing Center Dec. 9 that once again brought together representatives of the federal regulatory agencies, major housing and financial institution stakeholders and appraisal organizations to discuss issues of central importance to our members.

Part of NAHB's ongoing efforts to help resolve areas of concern in the appraisals process, the summit offered a good opportunity to further explore opportunities for clarifying and improving the methods used in valuing newly built homes, and was the third in a series of similar events we have held over the past year and a half. One specific topic of discussion this time around focused on communication with appraisers, and the importance of giving all stakeholders the opportunity to provide relevant information during the valuation process. Additional areas of discussion focused on appraiser education and qualification requirements, particularly for the valuation of new homes; the challenges of performing appraisals in distressed markets; and whether the appraisal system can take into account rising values as markets rebound. Summit participants also discussed the Interim Final Rule on Appraisals that was recently released by the Federal Reserve.

This rule, which focuses on appraiser independence, was mandated under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The discussion concluded with a review of issues related to enforcement of appraisal rules, including inadequate reporting on incompetent appraisers and inconsistencies and resource limitations that hamper state appraisal enforcement efforts. Going forward, NAHB continues to work with stakeholders to ensure that home builders are allowed to provide appraisers with information to assist in the accurate valuation of new homes. Small business panelists largely in the dark on EPA plans for new storm water rule

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected a final list of small business owners, small municipal managers and other representatives to serve on its Storm Water Small Business Advocacy Review panel. The meeting was held Dec. 7 in Washington, D.C. Stella Stormwater The EPA has shared several materials with the Small EnEPA Storm Water Enthusiast tity Representatives (SERs), including a summary of comments the agency received in its public docket following its initial notice to the public on the post-construction storm water rule making. The agency also shared general documents on Low Impact Development and its preliminary ideas for rule making. The SERs had until Dec. 31 to provide written comments.

The purpose of SBAR meetings is to gather input from small business representatives on the impact of proposed rules on their businesses and elicit recommendations on how to lessen their impact.

EPA’s regulatory considerations for a post-construction storm water rule making are not clear at this time. However, it has set a deadline of November 2012 to finalize the rule.

The SERs are expected to have a difficult time providing recommendations because they have only limited knowledge of the regulatory options that the EPA will provide.

NAHB is pushing the agency for more specific information on those options.

NAHB to Senate: lead paint rule becoming a "regulatory nightmare" National Association of Home Builders again told Senate leaders this week that the EPA’s lead paint regulations that apply to all jobs in homes built before 1978 need to be fixed – sooner rather than later. EPA’s rules continue to “negatively impact small businesses that are dutifully trying to comply,” it said in comments delivered to the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. “During a time when unemployment tops 21 percent in the construction industry, heavily dominated by small businesses, it is inconceivable that EPA has subverted nearly every possible tool that remodelers have to help ensure their compliance with something as important as the Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. EPA is redesigning the RRP into a regulatory nightmare that will essentially discourage critical efficiency upgrades and increase costs for older homes.” NAHB asked the committee to join it in opposing the upcoming clearance testing proposal; require EPA to undertake a rule making and new economic analysis to demonstrate the full cost of compliance now that there is no qualifying test kit; and restore the “opt out” provision for homeowners without small children. EPA recognition of lead test kits

According to a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development survey of the prevalence of lead-based paint hazards in the nation's housing, approximately 38 million pre-1978 U.S. dwellings contain lead-based paint. The federal standards for lead-based paint in target housing and child-occupied facilities is a lead content in paint that equals or exceeds a level of 1.0 milligram per centimeter squared (mg/cm2) or 0.5 percent by weight.

EPA-recognized test kits

Currently, a lead test kit can be EPA-recognized if it meets the negative response criterion of no more than 5 percent false negatives, with 95 percent confidence for paint containing lead at or above the regulated level, 1.0 mg/cm2 or 0.5 percent by weight. The recognition of such kits will last until EPA publicizes its recognition of the first test kit that meets both the negative response and positive response criteria outlined in the 2008 Renovation, Repair and Painting rule.

To date, EPA has recognized three lead test kits for use in complying with the false negative response criterion of the RRP rule. They are the LeadCheck®, the State of Massachusetts kit, and D-Lead®.

New guidance helps small businesses claim Health Care Tax Credit

On Dec. 2, the Internal Revenue Service and Small BusiCindy Steen 701.298.1606 ness Administration released a one-page form and instructions for how small businesses and non-profits can claim the health care tax credit contained in the recently enacted Affordable Care Act. The new Form 8941, titled “Credit for Small Employer Health Insurance Premiums,” and newly Ken Krajsa revised Form 990-T are now available on IRS.gov. The IRS 701.298.1534 also posted on its website the instructions to Form 8941 and Notice 2010-82, both of which are designed to help small MEMBER FDIC employers correctly figure and claim the credit.

Included in the Affordable Care Act enacted in March, the small business health care tax credit is designed to REAL HBA Plains Builder ad 1008.indd 1 encourage both small businesses and small tax-exempt organizations to offer health insurance coverage to their employees for the first time or maintain coverage they already have. The new guidance addresses small business questions about which firms qualify for the credit by clarifying that a broad range of employers meet the eligibility requirements, including small employers that cover their workers through insured multi-employer health and welfare plans, and employers that subsidize their employees’ health care costs through a broad range of contribution arrangements.

In general, the credit is available to small employers that pay at least half of the premiums for single health insurance coverage for their employees. It is specifically targeted to help small businesses and tax-exempt organizations that primarily employ moderate- and lower-income workers.

The maximum credit goes to smaller employers (those with 10 or fewer full-time equivalent employees) paying annual average wages of $25,000 or less. However, because the eligibility rules are based in part on the number of full-time equivalent employees, not the number of employees per se, employers that use part-time workers may qualify even if they employ more than 25 individuals. Fifty-nine years of providing homeownership to average-income households at affordable prices

James Gerhardson grew up working construction and took on jobs as a service technician and other outdoorrelated work. His experience in landscaping has grown over the years from being a project manager and foreman for a company in the area. In February 2010 Gerhardson decided he wanted to take his passion and start his own business doing what he loves.

Absolute Landscaping is located in Fargo and is working to make its mark in the landscape industry. The company specializes in hardscapes such as patios, walkways, outdoor living areas, etc.

“When I began working landscaping I knew right away I had found my calling. I love the artistic design and work that it offers. Once I made my decision to start my own company, I got my loan from the bank, gathered a few good friends and have nothing but great results and many compliments,” he says.

Gerhardson describes Absolute Landscaping as a fullservice landscape company that focuses on workmanship and fine details which helps separate it from the competition.

“We do try to specialize in certain areas of the industry including patios, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens and fireplaces and custom edging, however, we do everything from finish grading and sod to landscape design and lighting,” he says.

As the economy is rough around the edges and becomes a challenge for many companies, Gerhardson appreciates of how well North Dakota has sustained itself. It is still growing at a reasonable rate and hasn’t been hit has hard as many places across the country.

Another challenge facing Absolute Landscaping is the number of competitors in town. Gerhardson says the economy plays a small part in helping this situation.

“While the economy is definitely not favorable, it is helping ‘weed out’ companies that need to be ‘weeded out’ due to workmanship or prices,” he explains.

The company is continually trying to grow and expand by researching new, upcoming products favorable to the Fargo-Moorhead area and climate. Gerhardson and his crew have been looking at new products from areas throughout the country that can be used here in North Dakota while still keeping a reasonable cost and can give the community a new, different look.

Back in 1951, three brothers started a construction business known as Eid Brothers Construction to build housing for returning World War II GIs and their families. Seven years later, in 1958, the company name changed to Eid-Co Buildings, Inc., and has since been focusing on providing homeownership at price levels obtainable by Jason Eid households with average income.

Jason Eid is president of EidCo Buildings, Inc., today, but initially joined the company out of college with a degree from Concordia in biology.

He started in computer programming and learned most of the business by creating the systems that help manage the company.

Eid has seen the company grow and prosper over the years and has continued to focus on first-time buyers, second-time buyers on a budget and also for individuals wanting to downsize at retirement, but he has also pushed to start building Energy Star-rated homes.

“No matter what type of customer comes along, I continue to enjoy watching our customers realize their dreams. The customer could be a home buyer, business associate or employee; I take satisfaction from being part of the process by which they obtain their goals. Also, I get to see customers save money on their utility bills each month they own their home because of Energy Star,” Eid explains.

Eid-Co Buildings, Inc. has built a strong motive within the company; “Eid-Co Easy” has become the focus of each and every home purchase.

“From selecting the custom features of the home, closing with the finance company and the day-to-day interacting with the new home, our employees and systems place major emphasis on making the entire process understandable and simple for our customers,” explains Eid. With all the great parts of being the president of a company, one is also required to deal with obstacles. Eid describes how over-reaching regulations are one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today.

“We are seeing changes in all sectors overseeing our industry: financial, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, insurance, Environmental Protection Agency and codes. We combat these rules, regulations and issues by continually staying up-to-date with educating ourselves.

“We focus on total lawn care and snow removal. A new part of our business, Wheeler Property Watch, specializes in watching farm sites, lake property and homes while people are on vacation or have gone south for the winter. The time spans can be daily, weekly or even monthly.

We check for heating or frozen pipes, vandalism and carry materials to make minor repairs.”

What is the latest trend in your business/ industry?

“On the lawn care side of things we have seen a lot of development in fertilization and spray techniques that are catching on. One big thing that is out now is a new herbicide that can take care of crab grass or quack grass in regular lawns. Prior to this herbicide the only alternative to fix the problem was Round-Up which would end up killing everything.

“Right now, during the winter months, people are moving away from the granule salt and leaning towards liquid de-icing products.”

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry today and how are you dealing with it?

“Our biggest challenge is definitely the rising cost of fuel. We have accounts outside city limits and having to get out there isn’t the easiest on gas. We have re-routed some and are trying to be as efficient as possible by grouping as many jobs into a single route as possible. The rising cost of labor is another challenge we have to face, but there isn’t much we can do about it.”

Remodelers Council FOCUS: Smart Spaces, Inc.

Ursula Hegvik is the owner of Smart Spaces, Inc. in Fargo.

Her company focuses on creating the best custom solutions for clients’ closets, pantries, laundry rooms, offices, craft rooms, garages and more.

Hegvik earned a master’s degree in organizational communication and then went on to work for California Closets and received training in design and installation.

Ursula Hegvik She joined the Remodelers Council in January of 2008 and Smart Spaces, has been a part of many great projects in the Inc. community with her favorite being the RENEW House. Smart Spaces, Inc. contributed closet systems to the restored home.

“It was a great experience. I was able to see the transformation of an old home into a fabulous, up-to-date style that a young family can build their life in,” she says.

Hegvik originally joined the Council to become more involved with the HBA of F-M, her colleagues, the building industry and the community. She continues to stay involved with the Council because she enjoys getting to know fellow members and the HBA staff.

“I feel good about helping out on community projects and encourage and welcome anyone to join our terrific group,” she says. “We welcome everyone!”

HBA members discuss Minn. Green Communities building standards

Several HBA of F-M members attended a briefing Nov. 18 with John Harrington, Greater Minnesota Housing Fund Program/Loan Officer to discuss Minnesota Green Communities building standards. HBA member Eid-Co Buildings, Inc., and Jordahl Custom Homes, Inc., have constructed homes under the Green Communities criteria in Moorhead’s Stonemill Ponds neighborhood in 2010.

Builders and Moorhead staff shared recent experiences working with the criteria and hope that the certification can be recognized in the marketplace as a competitive advantage for both the initial sale of the home and future resale of Green Communities homes. Moorhead will partner with builders to document and verify the homes meet Green Communities Standards. Harrington expressed a willingness to continue to work with the HBA of F-M members on documenting the value of the certification in home appraisals and responded to questions regarding some of the specific fixture and building material requirements.

The income-qualified buyers of the homes built in Stonemill Ponds each received no-interest affordability gap loan financing of more than $50,000 combined resources from Minnesota Housing and the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund. Right now, these financing tools are limited to Stonemill Ponds, but it may be possible to qualify other development areas in the future.

No matter the location or home price range, energy efficiency is an increasingly important topic to home buyers. Many of the Green Communities standards are already included in the Minnesota Building and Energy Codes; there are some additional techniques that may not add much (if any) cost but do contribute to significant energy savings for the home owner.

New American Home a source of latest product, design and green building ideas

The New American Home (TNAH) 2011 is beautiful and loaded with new products and design innovations that will stimulate the imagination of anyone who makes their living in the housing industry. The grand show home will be a highlight of the National Association of Home Builders International Builders’ Show, Jan. 12-15 in Orlando.

The home features American Empire design with Greek Revival elements and combines an inviting layout with elegant style, eccentric interiors and easy classicism. Built in a quiet Orlando neighborhood, it offers a view of a lake with the city skyline beyond.

“Anyone attending IBS should see The New American Home,” said Alex Hannigan, a past TNAH builder and current chairman of the TNAH Task Force, which oversees the project each year. “Whether you’re looking for inspiration on green building, technology systems integration or the latest design trends, this home will give you great ideas that you can take back to your business.”

Now in its 28th year, The New American Home is constructed annually in conjunction with the IBS to showcase innovative building technologies and the latest building products.

As NAHB’s official show home, it displays design trends, construction techniques and materials that the building industry can use in any new or remodeled home.

The showcase products in the home are provided by members of the National Council of the Housing Industry, the leading manufacturers and suppliers for the construction industry.

Unlike previous New American Homes, which were sold after the Builders’ Show, TNAH 2011 is a custom residence that is being constructed for specific buyers.

Built by Orlando Builder Continental Homes, it is being constructed on an infill building site in an older neighborhood on the South side of Lake Davis near downtown. The architect of design for the project was Michael Curtis of The Studio in Alexandria, Va., and the architect of record was Christopher M. Donnelly of Donnelly Architecture, Inc. in Beverly Hills, Fla. Kate Clarke of Continental Design oversaw the home’s interior design.

In keeping with increasing demand for energy- and resource-efficiency, TNAH 2011 has been built to achieve “Emerald” status under the National Green Building Standard, and is seeking certification at this time. The standard was developed by NAHB and is approved by ANSI, the American National Standards Institute. “Emerald” is the highest of the four levels of achievement in resource ef-

ficiency that the standard recognizes.

To attain the Emerald level, TNAH 2011 relies on the latest innovations in green building and construction technology, including a state-of-the-art energy efficiency package.

The home’s green building features include masonry block construction for exterior walls, a solar-assisted HVAC system, solar hot water heater with gas backup, open and closed spray foam insulation for different parts of the house and photovoltaic cells. It also includes a greywater recycling system, tankless hot water heaters, hydronic air handlers and “intelligent” fire places.

Other energy and resource efficiency features include: • Energy Star appliances • Low VOC paints, stains, adhesives and sealants • Formaldehyde-free wood cabinetry, paneling and sheathing • Whole-house automation system • Whole-house lighting control system • Dual-flush water closets • Low-flow shower head and faucets • Native and drought-tolerant plants • Artificial grass • Weather-controlled irrigation system • Rainwater harvesting system In addition to state-of-the-art green building technology, TNAH 2011 features dynamic aesthetic design, including fountains, pools, solar elements and leading-edge art-glass work.

In addition to the Emerald certification under the National Green Building Standard, TNAH 2011 received the following: • Energy Star certification • FGBC (Florida Green Building Coalition) Platinum certification • Florida Yards and Neighborhoods designation • Florida Water Star designation • Progress Energy's Home Advantage Program “I live in Orlando, so I’ve been able to watch the construction of this home from beginning to end,” Hannigan said. “I’m very excited about TNAH 2011. It is full of innovative new products, the finishes are excellent and the interior design by Kate Clarke is wonderfully creative.”

The foundation, created in 1993 by the Home Builders Association of FargoMoorhead, is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization.

It was established with funds donated

by HBA members, fundraising events and the HBA itself. The purpose for its creation was to provide an outlet for the builder, remodeler, and companies related to the building industry to show the community that there is more to the building industry than demolition, construction, and remodeling.

The HBA of F-M handles the administrative duties for the foundation at no charge. Any contribution designated to the foundation goes directly to the foundation and its charitable work.

HBC President’s message

As a new year begins, the Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation is looking forward to new opportunities 2011 will bring. One of the first activities of the New Year is the International Builders Show in Orlando, Jan. 12-15. Student chapters are able to attend the show and compete in the Residential Construction Management Competition. Minnesota State University Moorhead, North Dakota State College of Science and North Dakota State University are all competing this year. Students began developing this project last fall and spent a lot of free time participating in this project as it is not part of any class at our local schools. If you are attending the show, I encourage you to watch these presentations Jan. 12 and 13.

Community involvement

Last year our members were generous in their support not only of HBC but of numerous other projects in the community. Members of the HBA of F-M participated in the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, bell-ringing for the Salvation Army’s red kettle campaign, ramp projects amongst many more. I challenge every member of the HBA to beat what was accomplished last year and give even more of ourselves in 2011.

NDSEB votes to allow ‘series’rated circuits instead of ‘combination’ AFCIs

The N.D. State Electrical Board recently voted to allow “series”-rated circuits to be used instead of “combination” arc cault circuit interrupters effective Nov. 17. Circuits must still be placed in all locations required in the 2008 National Electric Code, but the more reliable “series” circuits can be used instead of the AFCIs that have been the base of many complaints of wire tripping. Formal notification will come from the N.D. State Electrical Board. Below is the official executive order from the N.D. State Electrical Board.

At the Nov. 17, 2010 meeting of the N.D. State Electrical Board, the subject of unwanted tripping of listed arc-fault circuit interrupters combination-type was brought before the board and discussed. It was the decision of the board that under the authority of North Dakota Administrative Rule 24-02-01-02(6), pertaining to article 210.12, 2008 edition, National Electrical Code, that branch/feeder AFCIs shall be permitted to be used to meet the requirements of 210.12(B). this decision is effective as of Nov. 17, 2010.

Thank You 2010 PAC Contributors HBA raises $16K

our commitment to the industry in which you work is honorable and unmatched. The Association’s advocacy program is two-pronged. The first comes in the form of being a voice on behalf of the industry in favor of legislation and regulations that are beneficial to the building industry. The other prong of advocacy is the association’s political action committee, NDAB-PAC. The HBA’s advocacy program saw another successful year in 2010. The work done by the HBA, NDAB, and NAHB can be clearly seen on all three levels (local, state, and national).

• On a national level, the industry benefited in early 2010 from the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit and the $6,500 tax credit for existing home owners.

• On a state level, PAC contributions were made to over 50 candidates in legislative raises. NDAB-PAC saw an 80 percent success rate in the candidates it supported.

• On a local level, 2010 was the first year that the newly passed property tax exemption was available to homes under construction. This year also saw the modernized twoyear tax exemption for new home buyers which guaranteed a full two years to each buyer.

2010 Health Tech & Trades Career Expo

Dec. 9, 2010 saw the Eigth Annual Health Tech and Trades Career Expo at the Fargodome. This event is geared specifically to introducing ninth grade students to a variety of careers, especially those where a four-year degree is not required.

Students from Central Cass, Central Valley, Enderlin, Fairmount, Fargo, Hankinson, Hawley, Kindred, Mahnomen, Maple Valley, Milnor, Moorhead, North Sargent, Northern Cass, Oak Grove, Park Christian High School, Reach Homeschool Group, Red River ALC Moorhead, Richland, Sargent Central, Shanley, Thompson, Ulen-Hitterdal, Underwood, West Fargo and the Youth Education Services brought ninth graders to take in the experience.

The Expo showcased numerous industries and gave students hands-on experience. This year, it featured a helicopter, semi-truck display, two cranes, veterinary tech programs, medical fields, cosmetology, law enforcement, dentistry and communications to name a few. In addition, the construction industry had a great showing with representation of heavy industrial, concrete, electrical, commercial HVAC, landscaping, cabinetry, carpentry, windows and general construction.

This committee develops education programs for the Association. It provides an abundance of choices to fulfill continuing education credits required

by Minnesota for builder licensing.

The committee’s purpose is to assist the development, professionalism and profitability of HBA members and the industry.

Events

This committee handles programming and entertainment for the General Membership Meetings, and coordinates the annual HBA Golf Outing, and the Home & Garden Show. Its purpose is to provide creative ideas, and support for coordination as well as logistics during each of these events.

• The next GMM will be the New Year Celebration & Installation 11:30 a.m. Jan. 6 at the Holiday Inn. Please register by calling (701) 232-5846 or e-mail info@hbafm. com. The 2011 president and board of directors will be installed by 2011 NDAB President Joel Feist.

• The Red River Valley Home & Garden Show will be Feb. 25-27 and is bringing back by popular demand the Grilling Buddies Mad Dog and Merrill and, in addition, Renegade Gardener Don Engebretson will be presenting seminars.

Membership: Retention & New Member Development

This combined committee looks for new and creative ways of recruiting and welcoming new members, and develops programs to remind members of the value of their membership. It explores reasons why members join and leave, is responsible for contacting all members and also reviews the NAHB membership status report on a monthly basis.

• The October 2010 membership report indicates a member retention rate of 90.7 percent, with 821 members: 225 Builders and 581 Associates. A total of 373 renewals have been made so far this year.

• The committee’s 2010 goal was to recruit 65 new members (25 Builders and 40 Associates) and achieve a retention rate of 90 percent. We have made our goal! The HBA is already working on goals for 2011 so please notify

A “Parade of Homes” is designed to promote HBA Builder members to consumers. It serves to boost home sales and raises the level of recognition for Builder members. This committee is responsible for all aspects of coordinating and promoting the spring and fall Parades.

• The Fall Parade of Homes was held Sept. 11 – 12, 18 – 19 and featured 38 homes by 21 builders. To see the Parade magazine or website visit www.hbafm.com.

• The 2011 Spring Parade of Homes dates are April 30 – May 8. Deadline for home entry is March 3, 2011. Builders, look for information in the mail in January.

Public Issues

This committee is responsible for keeping tabs on governmental action that affects the industry and then informing the industry on the status of those issues.

• A task force has been established to review infrastructure requirements in Moorhead. The group has submitted recommendations of topics to consider to the city. The purpose of the recommendations is to ultimately reduce infrastructure costs. The city has said they will respond within six to eight weeks.

• The city of Fargo adopted the 2009 I-Codes in June. The new building code for residential buildings will be implemented in October. The city also plans to adopt the 2009 IECC Jan. 1, 2011.

• The HBA has created a taskforce to review the city of Fargo’s draft sign code ordinance. The group has met several times. The HBA has appeared before the city’s task force in charge of rewriting the code on four occasions. Many changes were made at the request of the industry. The sign code has been approved by the Planning Commission and the City Commission will hold a hearing on it in September.

PAC Committee

This committee works with the Public Issue Committee to coordinate fundraising efforts for North Dakota Association of Builders’ political action committee (NDAB-PAC) and the National Association of Home Builder’s political action committee (BUILD-PAC). It is involved with setting guidelines for PAC giving policies and its members have the final vote on distribution of PAC funds the association distributes to local candidates running for office.

• Total PAC fundraising for 2010 is over $16,000 Next meeting: 12:30 p.m. Jan. 27

Remodelers Council

This council represents the remodeling industry in the local HBA of F-M through national Remodelers membership. It has its own dues and community service projects and is the committee behind planning the Fall Home Show.

• The 2010 Fall Home Show, Sept. 25 - 26 brought in over 1,700 consumers to view 65 exhibits which filled the entire Centennial Hall.

ness, Gerhardson has no complaints about his job and says he loves everything about it.

“The satisfaction of looking back and seeing what we created with our hands is amazing! Also, the gratification of knowing other people and families will enjoy what we have created for years to come is something that gets me up and going every day,” he says.

In Gerhardson’s opinion, research is the key for those starting out in the industry. He advises to make sure and know what you are getting into when starting a company.

He says, anybody can learn the trade, but one must know what costs are to be accepted and how to keep a manageable sized crew to be successful.

Another piece of advice from Gerhardson, “Keep the customers happy. If something might take an extra day to finish the way they want it, every one of those seconds is worth it compared to what one bad referral would cost the company.

- On Feb. 8 members will head to the Capitol in force, attend committee hearings, watch live floor sessions, and talk with legislators in the halls about the legislation affecting the construction industry.

• Only one chili recipe per team.

• Chili must be homemade from scratch – please no chili mixes or mixes with pre-measured spices.

(Please prepare in the most sanitary manner possible.)

• Chili must be prepared off-site and brought to the venue in a crock pot or roaster. (Team must bring own electrical cord.)

• Chili must be ready to be served at 5 p.m. Teams can arrive at 4 p.m. to set up.

• Entrants are encouraged to name their chili and use a theme to decorate their station (more space will be allotted than last year).

• Bowls, spoons, ladles and napkins will be provided by the HBA.
