Letter from Gina Cunningham

A Word from Our Executive Director I am often asked, why HomeAid? When I think about the answer, I’m reminded of all the dedicated and generous people throughout the 26+ years I’ve been at HomeAid Orange County, who have contributed their time, resources, and financial support to raise awareness about our mission.

The resiliency and enthusiasm I’ve witnessed firsthand time and time again for what we do, regardless of the challenges we often face, humbles me and fills me deeply with gratitude.

With housing affordability continuing to be at the forefront of our conversations, our goal for 2024 is to be positioned in a way that allows us to respond with the greatest impact. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that life can change on a dime, and we need to be prepared. The unwavering support of donors like you allows us to lead

play

an

important

role

in

the

conversation

about

homelessness in our community. This is more important than ever as we see families and single adults struggling to make ends meet, which pushes them into a greater risk of homelessness.

The journey we’re on together can be challenging but it is also tremendously rewarding when we hear the stories of lives being impacted by the work we do. The oncoming Silver Tsunami is gaining momentum with an increase in the number of seniors experiencing homelessness. At HomeAid, we believe housing is a human right, and it’s more critical than ever to build affordable housing for our aging population. Together, we can end homelessness.

Success Story: Cathi

CATHI’S STORY: HOPE AND HEALING

Betrayed at a young age by a system designed to protect her, Cathi cycled through unhealthy relationships for years and eventually found herself living on the streets with her two young children. With no family support or ability to provide for her family due to an injury, Cathi had run out of options. She sought county support, and after three months of continued attempts to secure housing, Cathi finally received a phone call referring her and her children to the HomeAid Orange County Family CareCenter.

Cathi was grateful to secure emergency housing, but also hesitant about the living configurations at the CareCenter. Upon meeting the staff and other clients, Cathi's concerns were quickly diminished. The care and support Cathi and her family have received while living at the Family CareCenter have been overwhelming. Today, Cathi is preparing to start a new job and is receiving the care she needs to address her health issues. Her children are thriving in school and even started participating in school sports and an after-school program that works with service animals. Cathi and her children's stories are still being written, but they now have hope that they will be able to find affordable housing and a place to call home.

Success Story: Jay

JAY’S STORY: FINDING COMMUNITY Raised in a childhood home with a loving mother, Jay's life changed one day when his father suddenly appeared after being released from prison. As a biracial child in the 1970s, Jay had experienced his share of racism and had seen his mother disowned from her family. Jay drifted in and out of trouble for years, and eventually caught a 20-year prison sentence. Released after serving 17 years, Jay came back to a world that had moved on without him.

The birth of his son in 2011 brought new hope to Jay and another reason to keep his life on track. But in 2014 when his mom suddenly passed away, Jay and his family were faced with a challenge they could not overcome. They were losing the family home and did not have the resources to relocate.

Eventually finding his way to HomeAid Orange County's Family CareCenter, Jay now resides there with his son. They have found a supportive community, as well as a local outreach program that provides free medical services, support for youth sports programs, and career training. Jay has also found a connection at a local church and gives back to both organizations by volunteering. Jay's passion for bringing hope to others is evident as he connects with other families experiencing homelessness to remind them that they are not invisible. Jay continues to live at the Family CareCenter with his son and looks forward to moving into permanent housing in the near future.

In July of 2017, HomeAid took a step in a new direction by purchasing our first property and creating the HomeAid Orange County Family CareCenter.

This emergency shelter acts as the first step for families suddenly experiencing

1,467 people served to date by the Family CareCenter since it opened 2017

homelessness. Following their time in the Family CareCenter, 90% of families move

on

their

housing

opportunity, bringing them closer to ending their homelessness.

The HomeAid Orange County Family CareCenter is a communal living space for families, with semi-private, flexible sleeping areas. It houses up to 16
