About Shanty More than just nautical; Shanty is a trend which explores maritime colours for interiors. This trend can have a very industrial feeling; think of working on the harbour and the colours than you see on the old boats and when you look out to sea. These industrial characteristics are also expressed in geometric patterns, while the sea influence is also prominent, giving us a woven look with stripes for patterns and textures.

Watch live, as Mary Portas’ business partner Peter Cross, and a team of scouts from Mary’s new concession stores at House of Fraser, select the next big thing in British Retail.

10 designers will be given 10 minutes to pitch their product to Peter in a bid to convince him that their products are future musthaves for Mary and House of Fraser.

This unique event is a first for any UK retail gift event and takes place only at Pulse, on Monday 11 June, at Earls Court.

Why are these trends set to become popular?

When it comes to products we now look beyond the surface - searching for more meaning in the things we possess. Shanty focuses on the beauty of aged surfaces with a hand-made feel, significant in interiors accessories. We have also picked up on two micro trends that are entering the market and will also be key for the season: Neon Highlights and Made in Britain. We will be presenting these on the Mix Trends Wall, showcasing products from around the show together with inspirational images.

How do you interpret these trends for retail?

Within each trend there are eight colours, chosen by our panel of industry experts from a wide range of market sectors. Each trend is created to be useable for a variety of consumer areas. Shanty, for example, has an aquatic palette tempered with greys, pinks and reds, and can be broken down into forward-thinking colour palettes for a wealth of retail sectors. Distressed finishes on hard surfaces work well in retail displays while aged enamel coatings are key in interior accessories.

Which home, fashion & gifts sectors can we expect these to influence the most?

With the mood for the season being more honest and instinctive, we are already beginning to see these trends appearing in homeware and interiors where material finishes gain more attention. A growing area of the season is ceramic products, with designers exploring innovative glazes and textures to stimulate the senses and create stronger product attachments.

Something I’ve been struck by recently is the evolution of the humble tea towel from a utilitarian item to a canvas for the imaginations of artists and designers. Have a look at the styles that are in the market today and you’d be more tempted to frame and hang them on your wall rather than using them to polish your wine glasses.

One of my favourites is a company that is leading the way when it comes to creating beautiful tea towels – Thornback & Peel LP119. Set up by Juliet Thornback and Delia Peel in 2003, its range is designed in London and screen printed in Leamington Spa and has a distinctly British feel. Motifs include corgis, bowler hats, pigeons and jellies. Between the Jubilee and the Olympics, all eyes are on the UK this year and I suspect this range will prove more popular than ever as an alternative British souvenir.

Jim Rokos exhibited at Pulse 2011 as part of the Central Saint Martin’s Stand, and in the space of a year, has become a multi-award winning designer, and is set to be a star of the future. ROKOS’ products explore the physical properties of materials to generate aesthetic & interactive concepts that encourage a richer interactive experience.

Perhaps the pinnacle of Jim Rokos’ fledgling career is winning the prestigious Red dot product design award for 2012 for his innovative 77° 30° 13° Wine Decanter.

The decanter can rest at a ‘sober’ 77 degrees, a ‘tipsy’ 30 degrees and a ‘drunken’ 13 degrees. This not only encourages user interaction with the product but also increases the flow of oxygen into the wine improving the depth of flavour.

Lee Washington is another success story from the Central Saint Martin’s stand at Pulse 2011. Lee used the show as a platform to launch ‘Little Man Paperclips’, a product designed during her second year at St Martins as part of a brief to use product design to cheer people up. Following Pulse, the ‘Little Man Shop’ brand was created and additional product lines developed.

Since Pulse 2011 ‘Little Man Paperclips’ have received notable press from The Guardian, Metro and OnOffice magazine, and are now sold via the Little Man online shop and have received worldwide orders.

Katie’s Launchpad Picks I love seeing the work of new designers. Of course there are many established brands, and design icons I never tire of seeing, but nothing beats the bright optimism of new designers.

It’s impossible to pick just three to watch from the stellar line-up at this year’s Pulse, and I hope to feature more Launchpad designers on my blog in the coming weeks, but here are three designers definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Chase & Wonder LP1 produce beautifully executed limited edition prints, cards and home accessories from their cowshed-studio in rural Worcestershire. Having met when they were just five, their paths took them via Edinburgh University, Central Saint Martins, and the

RCA, fashion design, retail and branding and a bit of globetrotting; occasionally overlapping along the way. Happily for us, they’ve finally settled down in the countryside to make beautiful prints together.

I’ve got a bit of a thing about felt, so I’m afraid new British brand Desinature LP117 had me at hello.

Their approach is about reflecting nature in their wood and felt designs, and respecting nature in their production methods. All their products are made in Britain and they use responsibly sourced materials and recycled packaging.

It’s impossible to pick just three to watch from the stellar line-up at this year’s Pulse.

Hungarian designer, Edith of Edith Ceramics LP65, says she “fell in love with the clay at the first time,” and to see her beautifully understated stoneware is to believe her. She works with black and white, preferring their cleanliness and contrast, and some of her pots get a touch of decoration with traditional Hungarian lace. All have the quiet simplicity of reverence to their material.

Pulse makes it easy for you to buy ‘green’ this summer with the Pulse Eco Trail. The Eco Trail is made up of exhibitors whose products are produced ethically under fair trade schemes, made of sustainable materials, or biodegradable or reusable in some way. Eco Champion Oliver Heath, who selects the successful applicants, gives his product pick of the Trail at Pulse this summer.

Their desire to source basic raw materials that are organic or recycled makes a good starting point and the natural inks used in the printing process are also a positive step forward. Their recycled paper packaging means that their ethos and values are right there for your customer to see too. It’s companies like Thornback and Peel that are making even the bigger retailers sit up and change their plans.

Thornback and Peel’s (pictured) products are everything that I love about a new generation of designer makers that are determined to make things more beautiful but also better.

But perhaps best of all, this is just what they do as standard, it’s their work that really shines out; nature inspired graphic designs, that are playful and truly contemporary in all the best ways. So be sure to track them down on my eco trail at Pulse this June.
