Dear Parishioners, Who is Jesus for you? Many in Israel recognised Jesus as a mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of the prophets. Peter, always quick to respond, professed that Jesus is truly the Christ. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter, but only God. Through the eyes of faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to publicly recognise Jesus as the Anointed One (also translated Messiah or Christ). Christ is the Greek word for the Hebrew word, Messiah. Peter's faith, however, was sorely tested when Jesus explained that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and die in order that God's work of redemption might be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they heard this word! How different are God's thoughts and ways from our thoughts and ways! Through humiliation, suffering, and death on the cross Jesus broke the powers of sin and death and won for us our salvation. If we want to share in Christ's victory, then we must also take up our cross and follow him where he leads us. What is the "cross" that I must take up? When my will crosses with God's will, then his will must be done. To know Jesus Christ is to know the power of his death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit gives us the gift of faith to know Jesus personally, power to live the gospel faithfully, and courage to witness to others the joy and truth of the gospel. Who do you say that Jesus is? Yours In Christ,

Father Robert

Hymn: Christ is the world’s true light NEH 494

1. Christ is the world's true Light, Its Captain of Salvation, The Day-Star clear and bright Of ev'ry man and nation. New life, new hope awakes Where'er men own His sway; Freedom her bondage breaks, And night is turned to day.

3. One Lord, in one great name Unite us all who own Thee; Cast out our pride and shame That hinder to enthrone Thee. The world has waited long, Has travailed long in pain, To heal its ancient wrong; Come, Prince of Peace, and reign!

2. In Christ all races meet, Their ancient feuds forgetting, The whole round world complete, From sunrise to its setting. When Christ is throned as Lord, Men shall forsake their fear, To plowshare beat the sword, To pruning hook the spear. Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4

Sentence: God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; and he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them.

The Collect Pour out upon us, O God, the power and wisdom of your Spirit, so that we, who have been baptised into Christ and made your children through faith, may know your Son’s power to heal, and, being made one in him, may overcome all barriers that divide us; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Isaiah 40:27-31 27 Why

do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God’? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30 Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31 but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 8

Psalm: 63:1-9

O God, | you are· my | God: eagerly | will I | seek | you. 2 My soul thirsts for you, my | flesh | longs for you: as a dry and thirsty | land· where no | water | is. 1

So it was when I beheld you | in the | sanctuary: and | saw your | power· and your | glory. 4 For your unchanging goodness is | better· than | life: there|fore my | lips shall | praise you. 3

And so I will bless you as | long as· I | live: and in your name will I | lift my | hands on | high. 6 My longing shall be satisfied as with | marrow· and | fatness: my mouth shall | praise you· with ex|ultant | lips. 5

When I remember you up|on my | bed: when I meditate up|on you· in the | night | watches, 8 How you have | been my | helper: then I sing for joy in the | shadow | of your | wings, 7

9

Then my | soul | clings to you: and | your right | hand up|holds me. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 9

Second Reading: Galatians 3:23-4:7 23 Now

before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise. 4 My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; 2 but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3 So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6 And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ 7 So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round NEH 355

1. Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round Of circling planets singing on their way; Guide to the nations from the night profound Into the glory of the perfect day; Rule in our hearts, that we may ever be Guided and strengthened and upheld by thee. 2. We are of thee, the children of thy love, The brothers of thy well-beloved Son; Descend, O Holy Spirit, like a dove Into our hearts, that we may be as one; As one with thee, to whom we ever tend, As one with him, our Brother and our Friend.

3. We would be one in hatred of all wrong, One in our love of all things sweet and fair, One with the joy that breaketh into song, One with the grief that trembleth into prayer, One in the power that makes the children free To follow truth, and thus to follow thee. 4. O clothe us with thy heavenly armour, Lord, Thy trusty shield, thy sword of love divine: Our inspiration be thy constant word; We ask no victories that are not thine. Give or withhold, let pain or pleasure be; Enough to know that we are serving thee.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA Sung by Choir & Congregation The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 9 beginning at the 18th verse.

18 Once

when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ 19 They answered, ‘John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.’ 20 He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered, ‘The Messiah of God.’ 21 He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, 22 saying, ‘The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.’ 23 Then he said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. Luke 9:18-24 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BAPTISM

When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Maxton into God’s presence that he may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Maxton for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage him in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Maxton, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 14

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Maxton may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in him where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Maxton to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 15

The Baptism Priest: Maxton Roger, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)

Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Maxton, we pray, and grant that he may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Samantha, and Robert, that in your Spirit of wisdom, Maxton’s family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Maxton’s godparents, Kiah and Tyler; enable them to share with their godson what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN. Children’s Show, Tell and Discuss.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand) {Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 16

Offertory Hymn: Thy hand, O God, has guided NEH 485

1 Thy hand, O God, has guided thy flock, from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page; our fathers owned thy goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness: one Church, one faith, one Lord.

4 And we, shall we be faithless? Shall hearts fail, hands hang down? Shall we evade the conflict, and cast away our crown? Not so: in God's deep counsels some better thing is stored; we will maintain, unflinching, one church, one faith, one Lord.

2 Thy heralds brought glad tidings to greatest, as to least; they bade men rise, and hasten to share the great King's feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one Church, one faith, one Lord.

5 Thy mercy will not fail us, nor leave thy work undone; with thy right hand to help us, the victory shall be won; and then, by men and angels, thy name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one Church, one faith, one Lord.

3 Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely, to guard the nation's life. Their Gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, man restored, was all in this enfolded: one Church, one faith, one Lord. 17

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts: We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise... ... Forever praising you and singing:

18

Priest: ‌. do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me

Priest: in songs of never ending praise:

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray,

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Ave Verum, Elgar. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: All hail the power of Jesu’s name NEH 332

1. All hail the power of Jesu’s name; let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem to crown him Lord of all. 2. Crown him, ye morning stars of light, Who fixed this floating ball; Now hail the Strength of Israel’s might, And crown him Lord of all.

5. Hail him, ye heirs of David’s line, Whom David Lord did call; The God incarnate, Man divine, And crown him Lord of all. 6. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget the wormwood and the gall, go spread your trophies at his feet and crown him Lord of all.

3. Crown him, ye martyrs of your God, who from his altar call; praise him whose way of pain ye trod, and crown him Lord of all.

7. Let every tribe and every tongue to him their hearts enthral, lift high the universal song and crown him Lord of all.

4. Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race ye ransomed of the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all.
