Dear Parishioners, The old Anglo-Saxon term Whitsunday or Whitsun given to the fifty days after Easter commonly called Pentecost (in Greek- Pentēkostē (hēmera), "the fiftieth [day]”) is still used in some Anglican Churches, exclusively or together with Pentecost. Two general main theories point to the meaning to the name of Whitsunday: a) According to one interpretation, the name derives from the white garments those expecting to be baptised wore on that Sunday. b) A tradition of the young women of the parish all coming to church or chapel in new white dresses on that day. However, Augustinian canon John Mirk (c. 1382–1414 AD), of Lilleshall Abbey, Shropshire, had another interpretation: Thus, he thought the root of the word was "wit" (formerly spelt "wyt" or "wytte") and Pentecost was so-called to signify the outpouring of the wisdom of the Holy Ghost on Christ's disciples. (1) Just as Jesus was anointed with the Spirit at the beginning of his ministry, (Matt 3:13) so the disciples needed the anointing of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission entrusted to them by Jesus. The Holy Spirit is given to all who are baptised into Jesus Christ to enable us to live a new way of life - a life of love, peace, joy, and righteousness (Romans 14:17). The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the love of God (Romans 5:7), and he gives us the strength and courage we need in order to live as faith-filled disciples of the Lord Jesus. The Spirit helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26), and enables us to grow in spiritual freedom - freedom from doubt, fear, and from slavery to our unruly desires (2 Corinthians 3:17; Romans 8:21). The Spirit instructs us in the ways of God, and guides us in living according to God's will. The Spirit is the source and giver of all holiness. Isaiah foretold the seven-fold gifts that the Spirit would give: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). Yours In Christ,

Hymn: We have a gospel to proclaim NEH 486

1. We have a gospel to proclaim, good news for men in all the earth; the gospel of a Saviour’s name: we sing his glory, tell his worth. 2. Tell of his birth at Bethlehem not in a royal house or hall but in a stable dark and dim, the Word made flesh, a light for all. 3. Tell of his death at Calvary, hated by those he came to save, in lonely suffering on the cross, for all he loved his life he gave.

4. Tell of that glorious Easter morn; empty the tomb, for he was free: he broke the power of death and hell that we might share his victory. 5. Tell of his reign at God’s right hand, by all creation glorified. He sends his Spirit on his church to live for him, the Lamb who died. 6. Now we rejoice to name him King: Jesus is Lord of all the earth. This gospel-message we proclaim: we sing his glory, tell his worth. Edward Joseph Burns 1938

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4

Sentence: God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

~ The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them.

The Collect O God, who in smoke and fire upon Mount Sinai gave the law to Moses, and who revealed the new covenant in the fire of the Spirit: grant, we pray, that, kindled by that same Spirit which you poured forth upon your apostles, we may fulfil with joy your commandment of love. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 1

Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 8

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-13 12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says ‘Let Jesus be cursed!’ and no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA Sung by Choir & Congregation

The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 14 beginning at the 8th verse.

8 Philip

said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ 9 Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. 15 ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because 12

it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 25 ‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. John 14:8-17, 14:25-27 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

14

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand) {Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Offertory Hymn: Come down, O Love divine NEH 137

15

1. Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

3. Let holy charity my outer vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes, in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Bianco da Siena d.1434 tr. Richard Frederick Littledale 1833–90 alt.

16

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Come down, O Love Divine, Hilary Tadman-Robins. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: Oft in danger, oft in woe NEH 434

Oft in danger, oft in woe, Onward, Christians, onward go, Bear the toil, maintain the strife, Strengthened with the Bread of Life.

Let not sorrow dim your eye, Soon shall ev'ry tear be dry; Let not fears your course impede, Great your strength, if great your need.

Onward, Christians, onward go, Join the war, and face the foe; Will ye flee in danger's hour? Know ye not your Captain's pow'r?

Onward then to battle move; More than conquerors ye shall prove: Though opposed by many a foe, Christian soldiers, onward go.

Let your drooping hearts be glad; March, in heav'nly armor clad; Fight, nor think the battle long; Vict'ry soon shall tune your song.

21

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post-Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Blessing

Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord: In the name of Christ. Amen

If you have a modern piano you’d consider donating or selling to the church or would like to donate towards a new piano, please speak to Stephen or Fr Robert. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We have just finished work on the Vicarage roof, which was leaking, and the total cost of this was around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.
