holy cross remembers former english professor (1973-1988)
Carolyn J. Wall
C
arolyn J. Wall, of Worcester, died on May 22, 2016, at 94. She was a professor in the English department at Holy Cross from 1973 until her retirement in 1988. She graduated from Holy Names College (now University) in Oakland, Calif., and then earned a Ph.D. at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Wall taught for 21 years at colleges in the western United States, including Clark County Community College in Las Vegas and her alma mater, Holy Names College. She moved east to teach at Holy Cross in 1973, joining the English faculty. Wall was one of the earliest female tenured faculty at the College, and served as the class dean for the Classes of 1980 and 1984. She was assistant dean of the College from 1978 to 1984, when she returned to the classroom. “The College was just making
a shift toward hiring women and Carolyn’s Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., was a mark of distinction,” says former colleague Virginia Raguin, distinguished professor of humanities in the visual arts department. “I remember Carolyn as very dedicated. Her presence paved the way for many others.” During her time at Holy Cross, she taught courses such as The History of English, Medieval Literature and Victorian Literature. Wall retired from Holy Cross in 1988 and later taught part-time at Becker College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, both in Worcester. She also acted as an editorial consultant, and volunteered at the Hahnemann Family Health Center, the Fallon Clinic and the Lutheran Home. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, and two nieces. ■
