A MESSAGE FROM TOM LENGEL Thomas G. Lengel P’12

Dear Parents and Friends, These are exciting times at Holy Child School at Rosemont! We are embarking on a significant campus expansion, which you will learn more about in the spring edition of Cachet magazine. Due to your generosity, we set a Holy Child Fund record for the sixth year in a row (which may itself be a record!) And, not surprisingly, we received a glowing report this past spring from the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), which granted us full accreditation for another ten years.

I continue to be proud and pleased to serve as Head of this wonderful School and School community and to help us build on the outstanding legacy established by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, who founded this School and whose stewardship guided and sustained it for over six decades.

You are our School’s current stewards, and as the Annual Report section of this magazine attests, your generosity is crucial to our ability to Nurture Excellence in [this] Joyful Catholic Community. I am grateful for the time, talent, and treasure that you contribute so willingly to the benefit of our students, and I can’t thank you enough on their behalf.

In addition to the list of donors in our Annual Report, you will find in this Cachet our lead article that describes and explains the ways we have added a more global perspective to our curriculum. As described in our Portrait of a Graduate, by the time they finish eighth grade, each of our students will, “Demonstrate cultural competence and act as a globally aware citizen.”

This goal is reflected in the literature our students read, the art and artists they study, and by having them Skype with people in other countries and from other cultures. In all these ways, and many others, we are intentional about educating our children so they understand and are sensitive to the more interconnected global village of the 21st century.

I hope you enjoy reading about that aspect of our curriculum and the many other aspects of our program and community, as outlined in this edition. D Sincerely,

ADMISSIONS CORNER

Celebrating Differences: A Source of Community Strength Christine Dymek Director of Admissions and Marketing

From my seat in Admissions, it has been exciting to watch our School family grow and reflect a more global composition in recent years. More so than any generation prior, today’s children will increasingly see themselves as children of the world as they continue to grow up in a digitally connected universe.

By exposing our students to cross-cultural traditions, beliefs, and practices at an early age, we encourage and model a respect for our cultural differences and, more importantly, celebrate these as a source of community strength. I believe, too, that it further reinforces the commitment of our foundress, Cornelia Connelly, to respect the uniqueness and dignity of every individual.

With the help of our families, we introduce multiculturalism

into the classroom at even the youngest age. We are blessed to have parents like Theresa Lee who visited PreKindergarten to explain the traditions and cultures of the Korean New Year, Middle School students who explain the traditions and practices of their family religion, Science Teacher Karen Grossman who uses her professional contacts to arrange Skype sessions with international scientists, and SeĂąora Peggy Stephens who offers her students the opportunity to spend a week immersing themselves in Spanish culture. While impactful and important on their own, these combined experiences allow our School to present a view of the world that invites curiosity regarding the diversity of all human societies and encourages a respect for all people. D

Cultivating a Global Perspective at Holy Child

A school assembly provided our students with the opportunity to learn flamenco dancing.

“I’m cosmopolitan, the whole world is my country...” began Cornelia Connelly, words that were progressive for a 19th century religious sister. Cornelia finished the statement with “and Heaven is my home,” but nonetheless her forward-thinking words demonstrate the global perspective that shaped the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and that impacts the way Holy Child School at Rosemont educates.

Today, in a more global community than that of Cornelia’s world 150 years ago, Holy Child strives to graduate global citizens who are catalysts for respect, justice, and love in their schools, community, and world. Through academics, service, and community our students grow to understand their interconnectedness and nurture the seeds of a global perspective.

“Having knowledge and exposure to other cultures, early on in their academic careers, is a powerful way for students to make connections and realize that they are members of not only our local community, but also the larger world community,” said Dominique Cortese P’26’29, Grade 4 Teacher. “What a student understands

about their place in the world and global community is always evolving, and we are able to tailor our curriculum to best suit our class’s needs and interests.” Dominique knows a thing or two about global education through her involvement in grade 4’s Continents Project, a cross-curricular unit focused on authentic music, dance, and food from cultures around the world. She and Jen Dziengelski, Grade 4 Teacher, lead the students in a significant research project that culminates in a presentation to parents and the student body.

The Continents Project is one example of many large and small scale endeavors across all three divisions that broaden students’ perspectives and understanding of our globe. Similarly, grade 7 hosts Walk Around the World, a spring performance that includes music, dance, and storytelling, while focused on countries rather than continents.

Grades 6-8 Spanish Teacher, Peggy Stephens, believes we harness the many unique perspectives in our community to enrich our students’ understanding of the world. “We’re good at bringing in family members, who can provide a different perspective, who speak

a different language, who can tell us about a different way of life,” said Peggy. “What this does is it brings learning to a level for our students that makes it real. It’s not just a textbook, not just a YouTube video—it’s a human connection. That’s what’s most important for me in providing a global perspective, to make that human connection.”

We are fortunate that many human connections have enriched our students’ learning and understanding. Grade 7 skyped last year with photojournalist Jonathan Saruk and discussed his experiences in the Middle East. They also welcomed current parent Phil Okala P’19’22 who spoke about growing up in Cameroon as part of the students’ unit on Africa. One grandparent spoke to our students about her childhood in Eastern Europe during WWII. Grade 4 has visitors at Community Time who share their experiences living or traveling. Guests over the years have taught them about places such as Australia, Bolivia, Cameroon, Japan, China, Austria, Canada, and Lebanon. Our 2018 summer read for Lower School was The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind about a boy in Malawi who built a windmill to provide his town with electricity and water. The whole Lower School division engaged in discussions about the book and group projects upon returning to school.

Through the study of the Spanish language, students in Early Childhood through Middle School are exposed to a variety of cultures across the globe. Marisa Estevez who teaches Spanish to grades 1-5, brings firsthand insight, “I am from Spain and draw from my personal experiences when teaching my students about Spanish culture, but I also make sure to celebrate Latin American culture in the classroom, especially through teaching stories, cuisine, and important holidays and religious traditions.”

—Peggy Stephens, Middle School Spanish Teacher Teri DiStefano teaches our PreKindergarten and Kindergarten students Spanish that emphasizes age-appropriate vocabulary and concepts. By the time students reach grade 6 where they have Peggy Stephens, they are well-versed in the language and are able to delve further into the varied cultures of Spain and Latin America through literature and conversation. Middle School students have the opportunity every other year to go on a trip to Spain with Peggy and Director of Technology, Robin Beaver and to really immerse themselves in the culture.

Alum Paul Strid ’89 P’21’22’24’26 appreciates the global perspective he gained as a student at Holy Child and sees that

approach continued for his children’s generation as well. “I think it creates tolerance and understanding of what other people are like.

Being able to walk in another person’s shoes and see how they live gives you a better perspective as to why they feel a certain way. Holy Child does a good job of having kids understand that there’s a bigger world out there and that that’s a good thing and not a scary thing.”

Paul’s wife Ruth is from Spain and values not only the Spanish program that Holy Child offers, but also our growing international School community. “Since we became part of the community as a family, there are more international families coming in. They’ve spread the word,” said Ruth. “These new international families feel comfortable, so comfortable that they want other international families who are in the area to visit Holy Child. I think that’s a really good sign and it’s really good for everyone in the community.”

What Paul and Ruth also observe is that Holy Child’s environment creates empathetic individuals who readily embrace others whether through service projects, visiting the Holy Child Sisters, or through their interaction with other grades. Ruth sees this particularly with her oldest, Dani, “Holy Child has really taught her that she is a leader and that little kids are looking up to her and she needs to be a role model. Holy Child has given her the opportunity to be a leader, to shine, and to make someone else’s life a little happier or better.”

Added Ruth, “Dani wouldn’t be like this if she attended another school that doesn’t put as much emphasis on making sure that you’re taking care of your community whether they’re your age, or little ones or older ones. It is one of the best experiences that Holy Child has given my oldest in particular.”

As a Middle School teacher, Peggy Stephens has a bird’s eye view of how teaching an empathetic interconnectedness contributes

to becoming a global citizen. “We do a good job through literature, through culture, through human connection, to help develop, foster, and teach what empathy is and how to feel it. I think our school is exceptional in how we develop it. There are many ways to teach a global perspective, but if you’re missing the empathy piece, you’re missing all of it.”

Even at the Early Childhood stage, Heidi Guarino-Ramos P’27’29 sees a global perspective being fostered for her two sons. Deeply committed to service, Heidi works closely with Namirisho Community Outreach in Kenya and with the global non-profit Freedom Business Alliance. “If I had to go to Singapore or Kenya on a trip related to the organizations I work with, the teachers were just so amazing in terms of their curiosity, their support, and how they’d speak to the class about what I was doing on my trip.” She was impressed with how the teachers of Emanuele in Kindergarten and Gabriele in Falcons would speak with the children at an age-appropriate level about the work that Heidi was doing.

Heidi and husband Luis Ramos, who is Italian and Ecuadorian, raise their sons with a global perspective and dedication to service.

“The way we live is global,” said Heidi. “The service projects we do at Holy Child as well as all the other projects that we do outside of Holy Child, help the boys to realize that what they see right in front of them everyday is not all that exists—and that goes across the board--culture, class, the blessings we have.”

embracing of others is part of the fabric of Holy Child School at Rosemont’s mission. Over 150 years after cosmopolitan pioneer Cornelia Connelly began her order, Cornelia continues to cultivate her global perspective through the work of our faculty, staff, and community. Said Heidi, “Prior to coming to Holy Child, I had heard about the environment that it creates; that it’s not just an academic environment, but that it’s about shaping who the children are as individuals. You can have every degree in the world, but if you don’t have love and aren’t able to impact people, one without the other isn’t very important. To experience the environment in action was even more amazing.” D

Grade 5 reads to Young Falcons on Earth Day. We encourage collaboration between our younger and older students to give our Lower School and Middle School students the opportunity to practice leadership and become positive role models for their younger peers.

Falcons sing for their parents to end a successful school year.

These moments give our students the opportunity to practice public speaking and performing in front of their families and peers.

PreKindergarten welcomes baby chicks to Holy Child. Every year, Quiver Farms brings eggs to our School so our Early Childhood students can learn about the lifecycle of the chicken.

Grade 3 spends the day at Citizens Bank Park for a Philadelphia Phillies Game. This is one of the many field trips our students take throughout the year to foster a new perspective on the topic they are studying.

Colonial Festival is a milestone for our grade 5 students as it is their first major Middle School project.

Grade 7’s Greek Festival performance is an impressive accomplishment for our students because they spend months studying Greek mythology and writing their own lines and songs.

Kindergarten celebrates Dr. Seuss with green eggs and ham, one of the many influential figures that our students study.

Hakuna Matata! Middle School wows our community with their performance of The Lion King Jr. Each spring, 70 percent of our Middle School students participate in our Spring Play.

Grade 1 leads a prayer service honoring Mary. Each grade leads a prayer service throughout the school year to practice leadership, one of the skills we instill in our students at a young age.

As an annual tradition to kickoff Field Day, grade 7 gold team and blue team faceoff in a friendly Tug-of-War competition.

Celebrating the Class of 2019:

Holding the Holy Child Mission in Their Hearts Twenty-six eighth grade students received their diplomas during Holy Child School at Rosemont’s 64th Commencement Mass on Thursday, May 30 at St. Thomas of Villanova Rosemont Chapel.

During the ceremony, our Student Council Co-Presidents Max Barton ’19 and Lorna Petrizzo ’19 reflected on their time at Holy Child and the impact our School has had on them.

“A home is defined as the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household,” Max said. “After nine years at Holy Child, I can proudly call it my home. Not because of how often I go or how long I’ve been here, but because of the things I have learned, the memories I have made, and the friendships I have forged.”

Lorna, who has been a student at Holy Child since fifth grade, added, “I could never have imagined how much of a home Holy Child would become to me. What started to me as a new planet became a community in which I felt incredibly happy and at home.”

After receiving their diplomas, twelve of the graduates were recognized as receiving a total of fifteen scholarships to area high schools. At the end of the Mass, our sixth and seventh grade students continued the tradition of wishing the graduates well by singing “Peace My Friend.”

“Today marks a great milestone in our lives,” Max said during his reflection. “When we walk out those doors and graduate, officially we are high schoolers. We will change during our time in high school, but I am positive this class will always uphold the values taught by Holy Child after we are gone.”

On behalf of their fellow graduates, the Co-Presidents thanked the faculty, staff, and peers who have guided them through Holy Child.

“I want to thank everyone in the Holy Child community, both present and not, who helped the class of 2019 on our journey as Catholics, students, and people, for your guidance, efforts, companionship, loyalty, and love,” Lorna said. “Thank you for striving to push us out of our comfort zones, to grow as children of God, and become the best version of ourselves possible.”

Max continued, “I reflect on my time at Holy Child with the greatest of gratitude. Thank you, Holy Child. Thank you to the teachers, who always inspired us to learn and who were great role models for us to look up to. To the staff, who keep this wonderful school running, thank you. To Mr. Lengel and Mrs. Hren, thank you for your leadership. And of course, thank you to my peers.”

Although they are moving on to face new challenges, our newest alumni will carry the Holy Child mission with them throughout their lives.

“I promise you this, even when we walk out those doors as new alumni, and when we come back for Homecoming this October and all ones to follow, we will still be Cornelia Connelly’s children in spirit,” Lorna reflected. “We might grow taller, style our hair differently, get braces, or wear new clothes, but deep down, underneath the surface, we will always be members of the Holy Child family and people of ‘Action Not Words.’” D

First Holy Communion:

Celebrating an Invaluable Faith Milestone

Our community proudly looked on as the Class of 2025 received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion on Saturday, April 27, 2019. First Holy Communion was celebrated during a Mass held at Saint Thomas of Villanova Rosemont Chapel, presided over by Reverend Robert Murray, O.S.A. Each of the twenty-five students held an important leadership role during the ceremony, from carrying the offertory gifts to dressing the altar. Thirteen siblings of our second grade students also participated in the Mass, making the occasion even more meaningful for their

brothers and sisters.

This event marked the second of two milestones for the Class of 2025 during the 2018-2019 school year. After receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation in December, the students prepared to receive First Holy Communion in the spring. The celebration of this sacrament is not only significant to our current second grade students, but also to our alumni who look back on their second grade year joyously thanks to the many momentous milestones they share with their family, friends, and teachers. Our students impress our community with their grace and confidence as they receive First Holy Communion.

Grade 2 prepares for this special day all year long by participating in and attending our Masses, learning songs, and practicing their responsibilities.

The Adamo Family:

WHY WE ARE A HOLY CHILD FAMILY

While Kristie and Frank Adamo have just begun their third year as Holy Child School at Rosemont parents, their curiosity about our School community was planted years before children Owen ’27, Ethan ’29, and Rose ’29 were even born through a chance encounter with former Head of School Sr. Mary Broderick, SHCJ. Several years later, they came to witness Holy Child’s uniqueness for themselves. “When we first toured, we saw all the smiles, child after child, grade after grade. Everyone just appeared so comfortable in their classrooms and amongst their peers. The sense of community that we have been introduced to here has been overwhelming. In carline you can see the kids happily jumping out of cars and fist bumping Mr. Harold,” said Kristie. Frank added, “There’s a tremendous camaraderie amongst parents, and there’s a lot more diversity than people realize. The bond that keeps everyone here is wonderful. There’s a real sense of family.”

This sense of family was especially evident in the way the teachers interact with the students. “I was witness to Joanne McGee giving an upset kid a kiss on the forehead,” shared Kristie. “Perhaps in other schools with different philosophies, a teacher would have hesitated to embrace a child like that. To see Joanne comfort a kid through physical touch...she basically did what I would have done as a mother had that been my child. It is through very simple gestures where it is evident our children are cared for even beyond academics.”

Kristie and Frank, who live in Gulph Mills and work as a nurse anesthetist and podiatrist respectively, know they are dropping their children off each day in a place with a home-like environment.

“There’s not much hesitation here on the children’s part to really be themselves. Everyone fits in, everyone knows others’ names, and it’s certainly heartwarming to see the children so comfortable,” said Kristie.

She added, “I remember being very impressed when Early Childhood had their day when Tom Lengel reads them a story. It just expresses volumes as to how each staff member takes a special interest in each and every one of the children here. Young Falcons are just as significant to the Holy Child community as the eighth graders.”

The Adamos have seen this same nurturing attitude amongst their own children when they return home. “I’ve witnessed Owen, if Rose or Ethan are upset, demonstrating Ms. Hunt’s mindfulness candle pose, trying to help them to calm down,” said Kristie. Joyful moments from School have also appeared during naptime and at the dinner table. “Rose loves her songs from music class, and we actually have to ask her to stop singing ‘Joy Joy Joy Down in My Heart’ during dinnertime,” shared Frank. “Her dinner is cold because she’s been singing for 20 minutes. During nap time, she keeps Ethan up because she’s singing that song.”

It is through very simple gestures “where it is evident our children are cared for even beyond academics.”

The Adamos are impressed with the strong academics, the arts, and Spanish instruction that Holy Child students receive from the earliest ages, but the faith foundation has been one of the most appreciated aspects of their education so far. “The fact that from Young Falcons on, religion is evident, whether through actions or prayer, is so beautiful,” said Kristie. “Rose one holiday suggested that we hold hands and pray. Just to know that she has that awareness that Jesus should be ever-present in life, at school, and in relationships with her friends at school, is so heartwarming.” Frank added, “At Holy Child they learn from an early age to appreciate God, Catholicism, and Chrisitianity. They’re learning simple things to make them better people.”

The Adamos are looking forward to all the opportunities that await their three children as they grow older and begin to participate more in the arts, athletics, and other hallmarks of a Holy Child experience. But in the end, it is Cornelia Connelly’s emphasis on the development of the whole person that Kristie and Frank most value. “I don’t know where our children will end up, but I know they will be confident and good human beings,” said Frank. “This is the foundation. Steve Clarke ’73 P’01’03 Steve Clarke ’73 P’01’03 knows the Holy Child School at Rosemont community better than most, as an alum, veteran teacher of over 40 years, and as a parent to alums Kerry ’01 and Stephanie ’03. Steve began his teaching career while he studied at Villanova University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education.

YOU’VE TAUGHT AND COACHED HERE FOR 40 YEARS AND YOU’RE ALSO AN ALUM. WHAT HAS STAYED THE SAME AT HOLY CHILD AS THE YEARS HAVE PASSED? What’s stayed the same is that our success comes from the relationships we build with children. Methodologies come and go, things change, people change, but what’s always separated this School from others is the relationship between the students and the teachers, those relationships being our primary focus. The most gratifying part of my whole career has been the relationships, not only with the kids, but also with other faculty members and colleagues, some incredibly close, like that with [the late] Dan Algeo P’83’85’90’95 (Holy Child’s first lay teacher and Steve’s mentor), and others...just relationships with good people, relationships built with care and respect.

HOW DID YOU COME TO BE A TEACHER AT HOLY CHILD? I would never be a teacher if it weren’t for Dan Algeo, who not only inspired me, but also helped me get the job because he recommended me. I kept this job through some hard times when I was younger and through some indecision, and I kept it in many ways because of Dan. I have told people for years that God speaks to me through children, and every time I’ve questioned my career path, within a week, a child will say something to me that reminds me of why I do what I do and where I’m supposed to be.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE EVENTS AND TOPICS TO EXPLORE WITH YOUR STUDENTS? I love coaching football and it goes beyond the actual x’s and o’s of the game. Some of my closest relationships with students have come through coaching. My favorite event as a class is the Greek Festival. I personally think it’s one of the best things that we do at this School. It’s authentic. I don’t think people believe me when I tell them this, but those kids do all of it; they write the scripts, they write the songs. They’re given guidance, obviously. The kids are nervous and the teachers are nervous, but it just all comes together, and it’s a beautiful thing.

WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE LESSON YOU HOPE TO PASS ON TO YOUR PLAYERS AND STUDENTS? Life is challenging and sometimes it’s really hard, but it’s always worth it. As adults, we spend a lot of time warning kids about the future and about what not to do or not to be, and I try to balance that out with what they should strive to be as human beings.

Anything worthwhile is not going to be easy to achieve. There are lots of easy achievements, but those easy achievements don’t bring any satisfaction. Satisfaction comes through effort and sometimes failure. Life can be really difficult and really challenging at times, but the great aspects of life, if you seek them out and are open to them, more than balance out the difficult parts of life. I tell the kids all the time a measure of a human being is not what happens to you, but how you deal with what happens to you. There will be times when you’re just about to give up, but don’t because that light is just around the corner. D b

WHAT DOES A HOLY CHILD EDUCATION MEAN TO YOU? As a teacher, it means trying to help create good human beings.

Obviously I have a job academically, but I’ve never considered that my main role. Children need a lot of advice and someone who is a sounding board. It’s a tough world out there, and it’s not always as easy to be a good person as it seems. I take a lot of pride in helping people achieve that...at least I think I help people achieve that. This [desire to create good human beings] is something that was given to me through this School. I was given that because I happened to be in the right place at the right time, and I feel that there’s some

Dr. Walter Keithly ’69 AGRICULTURAL ECONOMIST

“All of my teachers at Holy Child provided me with a good work ethic and instilled in me a desire to learn,” said Walt Keithly ’69 from his home in Louisiana. To say that Walt took this thirst for knowledge and ran with it would be an understatement. A retired Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at Louisiana State University and a current consultant, Walt has a long track record of researching, promoting, and educating about good usage of natural resources.

For 33 years, Walt taught graduate students at Louisiana State University, a role he truly enjoyed, “I loved teaching graduate classes for two reasons. I think they had a genuine desire to learn and it also forced me to learn more.” In addition to his teaching, Walt has had over 100 reports published in his field of expertise and was the recipient of grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Sea Grant, to name a few. While currently retired from his teaching ventures, Walt’s passion for agricultural economics continues.

Aside from consulting with a variety of constituents, he has served as an expert witness in numerous court cases, and assists the Statistical Committee of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and the Caribbean Council as well.

Originally from Berwyn, Walt attended Holy Child School at Rosemont with his three brothers Richard ’71, Robert ’72, and Edward ’81; sister, Lois, attended the former Holy Child girls’ high school. After graduating from the University of Delaware with his bachelor’s degree, he headed to the University of Florida to complete his master’s and his PhD., both in food and resource economics.

Now based in Louisiana, Walt’s focus has been on showing how economics can be utilized to manage natural resources (specifically fisheries) in a wise manner.

He has seen a great shift over the years in using economics to offer incentives to help reduce fossil fuels.

Walt’s research was focused not only on fisheries, but also on the local wetlands which are sadly being lost.

While protecting the wetlands is an ongoing and large project, Walt is hopeful that landlords will be encouraged by the incentives to protect this land that has been in their family for generations.

“The role of any one individual is marginal,” said Walt, “But I think collectively we have helped to better manage our limited resources. And we have other countries now looking at the United States for advice.” He may be modest about his contribution in safeguarding some of the nation’s precious resources, but Walt’s résumé says otherwise.

These days, with just a little more time on his hands, Walt enjoys fly fishing and camping out West, and even makes the occasional visit to Holy Child which he did one day this past summer. He also had the opportunity to attend his 45th reunion several years ago, to tour his old classrooms, and to speak with late former teacher Dan Algeo P’83’85’90’95. While the years have passed, the nostalgia for a place that sparked curiosity remains. Said Walt, “I had a very good learning experience, and I very much enjoyed my time at Holy Child.” D

Meghan McCormick ’03 CEO & Cofounder, Dare to Innovate

Holy Child School at Rosemont alum Meghan McCormick ’03 did not waste any time turning Cornelia Connelly’s “Actions Not Words” into a way of life. After attending The Episcopal Academy, then Georgetown University, Meghan served with the Peace Corps in Guinea. She now is the CEO and Meghan McCormick ’03 Co-Founder of Dare to Innovate, a receives the Holy Child non-profit aimed at ending youth Spirit Award from Madeline unemployment in West Africa through Sherry ’66 P’01’03. investments in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, and of OZÉ a for-profit FinTech company equipping youth with the tools to initiate and sustain entrepreneurship.

While working at her Peace Corps assignment teaching entrepreneurship courses and creating an e-reader library and business coaching films, Meghan recognized that West African youth needed particular tools not only to innovate, but also to maintain the companies they were establishing. One day while running, she envisioned Dare to Innovate and immediately went home and sketched out a plan. The non-profit, however, would never have dawned on Meghan without her experiences working with youth in an entrepreneurial capacity.

The outcomes of Dare to Innovate speak for themselves. Over 8,000 youth have been trained in entrepreneurship and almost $500,000 in seed capital has been invested in businesses started by youth. Meghan now lives in Ghana full-time and manages OZÉ, one of the organization’s for-profit subsidiaries. OZÉ is a technology platform that assists over 10,000 small business owners with digital record keeping and enables them to receive personal feedback on recommendations and areas for growth within their businesses.

One of the many success stories of Dare to Innovate is that of youth entrepreneurial fellow Darius whose tutoring center grew from a small room in his uncle’s house to a private school that boasts over 1,000 students and a large wait list. Darius is now the largest employer in his town.

Meghan credits the uniqueness of Holy Child for providing her with perspective and for supporting some of her very first social change initiatives. “Holy Child’s impact on me was twofold. The service orientation of Holy Child meant that we were constantly being exposed to people who had different backgrounds than we had. We were always looking at the commonalities and not the differences and seeing them as our peers. That kind of upbringing

and education make it easier to work in places where my experiences are very, very different from the experiences of the people I work with and for,” said Meghan. “The other part is that my teachers and peers all really believed in me and went along with my crazy ideas. I ran a non-profit carnival for years while I was at Holy Child called the ‘AIDS Alive Carnival,’ and every single classmate volunteered at it, which you wouldn’t get at a ‘normal’ school.”

Dare to Innovate continues to grow under Meghan’s leadership.

Her team is now experimenting with their new social franchising model in order to make entrepreneurship feasible for more people.

“Our social franchising model allows individuals to have the autonomy to own their own business and benefit from Dare to Innovate’s purchasing power and know-how so they can actually plug into the supply chain of a group of businesses that Dare to Innovate manages. We’re also doing urban agriculture where we provide the training and access to that market, but the youth can own individual aquaponics systems. Additionally, we’re making paving stones out of recycled plastic.” Added Meghan, “It’s really exciting because it’s something that’s really not happening anywhere in the world and so designing a system that makes entrepreneurship accessible in countries like Guinea is something we’re really interested in doing.”

Dare to Innovate is the first and the largest business accelerator in Francophone Africa that Meghan is aware of.

“

Meghan recently completed an MPA program at the Harvard Kennedy School and an MBA at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, both of which will assist her in her endeavours with Dare to Innovate and OZÉ. In March, Meghan was honored with the 2019 Holy Child Spirit Award by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus for the ways she embodies a Holy Child education. “[Holy Child is] where I first discovered how to turn an idea into a reality. It’s where teachers first set a high bar for me while also helping to catapult me over it. It’s where every day I walked by a banner that proclaimed, ‘Actions Not Words,’” said Meghan at the awards gala. “This motto seeped into me over the decade I spent at Holy Child School at Rosemont and imbued me with a lifelong propensity for action. Recipient of the 2019 Society of the Holy Child Jesus Faith in Action Award, Binney Wietlisbach P’08’10 is no stranger to the Holy Child School at Rosemont and Main Line community. She is a past parent to David ’08 and Larissa ’10 and President of Haverford Trust where she’s been for 27 years. She has spearheaded initiatives aimed at empowering women to achieve financial literacy and has been designated one of the “Top 100 Women Financial Advisors in the U.S.” by Barron’s, to name one of several distinctions.

Presenting the Faith in Action Award to Binney, former Holy Child School at Rosemont Head of School, Sr. Mary Broderick, SHCJ said, “Binney’s professional stature in our community is well-recognized and her enthusiasm is infectious and inspires others to join her. 1962 Susan McMahon McSherry and her husband Jack celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family in Maine on June 28, 2019.

Denise Withington Harnly and her husband Tom have lived in Seattle, WA for over 30 years. Now that they are retired, their time is spent hiking and skiing. They have two children, Heather and Aaron, who live in New Jersey and Brooklyn, NY. Heather and her husband Greg have two girls, Tess, 11, and Madeline, 9, and Aaron has an 18month old named Ansel. Denise and Tom hope to return to the East Coast soon.

1969 Dr. Walter Keithly is a retired associate professor at Louisiana State University’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and lends his expertise as a consultant. See Walter’s Alumni in Action feature on page 17 for more information.

2000 Ashley Heist earned her PhD in mechanical engineering this past spring from the University of Colorado. She is currently working for Tesla.

2001 Christopher McNabb has been appointed to Priest-in-Charge at St. Francis Episcopal Church in North Bellmore, NY after serving as the Curate for Caritas, Justice, and Healing at Trinity Church in Princeton, NJ. He is also the recipient of the Episcopal Church Foundation Ministry Fellowship, supporting his work with immigrant communities and the pastoral care of first responders.

BRENDAN ROACH ’02 Brendan Roach was a contestant on Jeopardy! for 3 days in June 2019. Steve Clarke ’73 P’01’03, who taught Brendan, told The Philadelphia Inquirer that he was not surprised to see his former student succeed on Jeopardy! “Even as a sixth grader, he had a head for factual information and intellectual curiosity,” Steve said.

Brendan is a policy researcher and Morton L. Mandel Presidential Fellow at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, MA where he focuses on science and technology policy. He earned his Master of Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School in May 2018.

Caroline Carlin is a history teacher, dean of the freshman class, and assistant middle school basketball coach at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, TN.

John Arena graduated from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the spring of 2019. He is currently at the University of Pennsylvania for his residency, specializing in neurological surgery.

Kevin Crenny graduated from Harvard Law School in May 2018. While at Harvard, he served as an executive editor for the Harvard Law Review. He also had a fellowship where he taught constitutional law to Harvard undergraduates. During this past year, Kevin was a law clerk in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

He is engaged to Helen Marie Berg and their wedding is planned for September 2020.

Rob Keleher visited our grade 4 students in April 2019 to teach them about Japan and Japanese culture. He educated our students about the differences between American and Japanese schools, how to greet and say farewell in Japanese, as well as some facts about the country. Rob lived in Japan for two years where he taught English to high school students.

2009 Kristen Hinckley graduated from Dartmouth College in June 2017 and is currently in her second year living in Peru working in the education field. In the summer following graduation, Kristen had the opportunity to play on the Italian Women’s National Lacrosse Team in a

tournament in Vienna, Austria. She then spent her first year after graduation teaching at a school in Lima. She is currently working as a research specialist at the Ministry of Education in Lima, Peru. She and her team carry out studies that monitor schools throughout the country by gathering and analyzing data. Kristen plans to attend graduate school to study international education policy development. At Dartmouth, Kristen studied Spanish and geography/international development and graduated with Cum Laude Honors. Kristen was also a member of the Dartmouth Women’s Lacrosse team. In her senior year, she was the recipient of the Patricia M. Pierce Award, which is presented to the player who has made outstanding contributions to the Dartmouth women’s lacrosse program, along with being an exemplary role model both on and off the field over the course of four years.

In her junior year, she received The Don and Margaret Radasch Award, which is presented to the player who exemplifies extraordinary dedication, true coachability,

and an unselfish attitude throughout the season. Kristen is enjoying the opportunity to do some traveling throughout South America and would welcome any visitors from the United States whose plans include travel through Peru.

2010 Mackenzie Curry graduated from the University of Alabama in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in public health. She started nursing school at Drexel University and Delaware County Community College in August 2019.

2011 Maggie Curry graduated this year from The Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in finance. She was an intern at E*TRADE last summer and continued to work part-time during the school year. She started working at E*TRADE as an audit analyst in Arlington, VA in July 2019 and lives in Alexandria, VA. Zachary DeCarlo, Jr. graduated from Pennsylvania State University in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology.

Michael Hinckley graduated from Dickinson College in May 2019 with Summa Cum Laude Honors. Michael was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and received the Lloyd W. Hughes Senior Scholar Athlete Award. Michael majored in economics and psychology. He was captain of the Dickinson Men’s Varsity Basketball Team in his senior year. Michael was named as the 2019 Centennial League Men’s Basketball Scholar Athlete and was chosen for the All-Centennial Conference Men’s Basketball Team. He was also a member of the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, achieving Dean’s List status throughout all four years. Michael received the Joseph J. Myers Prize for academic achievement and contribution to a varsity sport. During the summer of 2018, Michael interned at Premier Sports Psychology in Minneapolis, MN. He is currently attending

2012 Anne Marie Crinnion is a senior psychology major at Harvard University, where she serves as House Committee Chair and Chair of the Harvard Society for Mind, Brain, and Behavior. She returned to Holy Child in May to serve on our Alumni Panel to share her educational experiences with our students.

Michael Hinckley ’11

William Hyland graduated from Wake Forest University in 2019 with a double major in economics and music performance with a concentration in piano. He was the recipient of The Burchfield Presidential Scholarship for Distinguished Achievement, The Joseph and Marguerite Sloan Music Performance Scholarship, and The K. Wesley Lacey, Jr. Music Scholarship. He currently attends the University of Miami School of Law and Frost School of Music. William is enrolled in the dual degree program where he will receive a juris doctorate and a master’s degree in music finance and entertainment. He was awarded a Dean’s Merit Scholarship to the School of Law and a Music Merit Scholarship to Frost School of Music. William will pursue a career in music entertainment and music copyright law.

Jacqueline Curry is a senior government and Spanish major at Franklin & Marshall College, where she is a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and Committee on Student Misconduct. In the summer of 2019, she interned at the Lower Merion Police Department. Jax returned to Holy Child in spring of 2019 to help with the construction of the stage and operation of the light board for our production of The Lion King Jr. In May, Jax served on our Alumni Panel to share her educational experiences with our students.

Maddie Keane is a senior advertising major at Pennsylvania State University. Maddie plays club golf and club handball.

Will McDevitt, a junior chemical engineering and economics major at the University of Virginia, was the recipient of the AICHE Othmer Sophomore Award for having the highest overall GPA in his engineering class. He spent the summer interning at Trilion Quality Systems. Will returned to Holy Child in May to serve on our Alumni Panel to share his educational experiences with our students.

Andrew Schreder is studying abroad in a six-month program in Buenos Aires, Argentina at Universidad Catolica Argentina. He is a junior in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, majoring in science technology and international affairs.

2014 Eustace DeCarlo graduated in June 2019 from Fusion Academy in Malvern, PA. Caroline Hecht is a sophomore international politics major at Georgetown University, where she is a member of their rowing team. This past summer, she studied at the London School of Economics.

Matthew earned his Red Cross Lifeguard certification in June 2019 and was a lifeguard this past summer.

Brendan McGinn participated in The Urban Immersion, a summer service trip with La Salle College High School that gives students the opportunity to live in a community and work at various social service organizations in Philadelphia, PA. Brendan is a junior at La Salle. He was on The Lab Manager Program leadership team for the 2018-2019 school year.

2017 Megan Hinckley is a junior at The Episcopal Academy. She was selected to the National Spanish Honor Society this past spring. Megan plays on Episcopal’s field hockey team and lacrosse team, as well as participating on the dance team. Megan also plays indoor club field hockey with Horizon Field Hockey Club and club lacrosse with Philly Blast Lacrosse. Megan participated in a college art program this past summer at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nicole Gunn ’18 and Moira Minnich ’18 went on a ten-day cultural enrichment trip to France in June 2019 where they visited Nice, Provence, Paris, and Monte Carlo. Nicole and Moira are sophomores at the Academy of Notre Dame.

Megan MacFarlane worked as a lifeguard at the Ocean City, NJ waterpark on the boardwalk. She is a sophomore at The Agnes Irwin School and was on their honor roll during the 2018-2019 school year.

Skylar Ortiz performed the National Anthem at Citizen Bank Park during a Philadelphia Phillies game on July, 30, 2019. In April, she performed in Jenkintown Music Theatre’s production of Mamma Mia! with her mom Stephanie Cunningham Ortiz ’83 and sister Alexandra ’22.

Bobby Parillo is enjoying The Haverford School, where he is a member of Haverford’s Cavalry 169 Robotics Team and the Ultimate Team. He earned highest honors both semesters this year and was inducted into The Hephaestus Society. He volunteered at Cradles to Crayons this past summer as a member of their Teen Leadership Corps and he did fencing with the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia. Bobby is looking forward to coming back to visit Holy Child some time this year.

Sr. Mary Broderick Financial Aid Fund Established in 1998 by the Parents’ Auxiliary in honor of Sr. Mary Broderick, SHCJ, Head of Rosemont School of the Holy Child from 1983 to 2013, the proceeds from this fund are used to help provide a Holy Child education for a deserving student who otherwise could not afford to attend the School.

Joseph E. Casey Fund This fund was established in memory of a beloved member of the Board of Trustees for 13 years. In addition, as a long-lasting tribute to Mr. Casey, the Board established the Holy Child Spirit Award, to be given to a member of the graduating class.

Frank R. & Christopher C. Clarke Scholarship Fund Established in 1989 in memory of parent Frank R. Clarke, and later in 2011 in memory of his son Christopher C. Clarke ’82, the proceeds from this fund are used to help provide a Holy Child education for a child who has lost a parent or a child from a single parent family.

Joyce Ann Daily Sports Fund Established in 2001 in memory of Joyce A. Daily, VMD, Class of 1978, the proceeds from this fund benefit the Athletic Department.

The Outstanding Female Athlete Award is presented each year to a member of the graduating class in Ms. Daily’s name.

Charles and Elizabeth Luttrell Middle School Play Fund This fund was established and fully funded in 2016 by Stephanie Luttrell Stanko ’86 and her husband Steven Stanko to honor the memory of Stephanie’s parents. The proceeds from this fund provide financial support for our Middle School Spring Play, a Holy Child tradition near to Stephanie’s heart and family.

G. Taylor Nichols, Jr. Memorial Fund Established in 1994 in memory of Taylor Nichols, Class of 2002, the proceeds from this fund are used to help provide a Holy Child education for a deserving student who otherwise could not afford to attend the School.

Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship (OSTC) Tax Credit Programs Holy Child School at Rosemont is grateful to the corporations and the Holy Child community members who facilitated these donations through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs.

Since 2003, Holy Child has raised over $5.1 million and helped to educate over 120 students. Without this support, the School could not continue to help its students obtain an exceptional Holy Child School at Rosemont education.
