Hello New York District, Welcome to the first issue of Circling the Empire for the 2014-2015 service year! It has been an incredible experience so far serving as your bulletin editor and working with the district board. To briefly introduce myself, I am a rising sophomore at Stony Brook University majoring in civil engineering. I was in Key Club for four years and the first club I joined in college was Circle K. In this publication you will find introductions, a recap of events, and important information from the district. This newsletter serves as another source of information and also highlights the district’s accomplishments. I ask that you distribute this publication to your members so they can learn what the district and their fellow members have been up to. In addition, after every event you attend, write about it and send it to me! Include your name, division, club, and pictures. I want to share your service with the rest of the district. Let’s call it service spotlight! I plan to publish four newsletters this service year so watch out! If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Don’t forget to subscribe for updates and emails from the district.

Yours in Service, Leadership, and Fellowship Holy Cheong Holy.cheong@nycirclek.org

Letter from the Editor

Greetings from the Governor Hello Mighty New York District, Welcome to the Summer Edition of the Circling the Empire, the New York District’s official newsletter. I hope your summer thus far has been filled with fun, sun, service, and fellowship. The highlight of my summer was attending the Circle K International Large Scale Service Project (LSSP) in Nashville, TN. I was assigned to the clean-up project at the Harpeth River and was thrilled to have spent the day by the water. When we arrived, the man in charge of the project said, “Ok! We need one group to clean IN the river and one group to clean along-side the river. Any volunteers?” No one raised their hand; so I looked down at what I was wearing, decided it was time for new sneakers anyways, and volunteered as tribute. Slowly, more people volunteered and our small band of river cleaners assembled! We swam around and found road signs, old boats, tables, and nearly anything else you could think of that didn’t belong in a river. I had an awesome time getting to know other CKI members and serving to better the river environment. Thus, I am challenging you, not to volunteer to swim in a river, but to continue serving throughout the rest of the summer. Any service you do during the summer counts, whether it is on your own or with Circle K. Email your club secretary to let them know what your hours for that particular month are and spread the word that service doesn’t stop in the summer!

Yours in Service, Leadership, and Fellowship

Governor Renée

The Governor’s Project this year is called Small Hands, Big Future. It challenges the Circle K members of the New York District to do service for children. In addition, I am asking that fall funds raised for the Governor’s Project go to It’s My Heart, an organization that aids children with congenital heart disease and their families. My brother has congenital heart disease, so this is a cause very close to me. Additionally, I hope that through the Governor’s project Circle K clubs will be participate in more service with their local Kiwanis clubs since Kiwanis’ main focus is helping children. Please send all donations to:

It’s My Heart Inc. 1304 Langham Creek #235 Houston, Texas 77084 and report your funds raised on your MRF http://www.itsmyheart.org/

S O C I A L

M E D I A

In an effort to bring our district closer and more active, every month we will have a fellowship activity or contest. An example of this is creating a Circle K banner for your school and sending it to us. Prizes can range from CKI merchandise to eating with a district board member (we want to be your friend!). These fellowship activities will be sent in a form of a newsletter (sneak preview on the right) to presidents and vice presidents from our Executive Assistant Missy Keem. This will begin in September when most semesters start. If you have a great idea for a contest or activity that you successfully did with your club, share it with us! These activities will also help promote our district through social media. Clubs who participate will have their photos or names posted on all pages and publications.

Spread the word and remember to follow us!
