Boo at the Zoo

I volunteered at the “Scary Boo at the Zoo” event at the Ross Park Zoo in October. The goal of the event was to provide a fun and scary Halloween activity for students and families, with all proceeds benefiting the zoo. Circle K club members dressed up as zombies, scarecrows, pirates, and other Halloween creatures in order to scare the participants! As a pirate, I stood inside and around a pirate ship and scared families as well as I could. The event was fun and very festive, and the students and families seemed to be genuinely scared and thrilled to be participating in the program! In addition to the pirate section of the event, there was a haunted house, a scary clown walk, and more themed areas. Overall I had a great time participating in the event. It was fun to pretend to be a pirate for an evening, and helping to support a local organization felt great!

Food Recovery Run

… it also lets us help people who cannot even afford to eat. Every week, Circle K participates in the Food Recovery Run. It is held every Wednesday at 6pm in the CIW dining hall. Members of the Binghamton Circle K club collect left over food from the CIW dining hall and pack it. The food is then transported to the CHOW food bank, which distributes it to the homeless and needy. Not only does this program help save food that would otherwise be thrown out, it also lets us help people who cannot even afford to eat. A lot of members have shown interest in this program and signups have increased since the beginning of the year. It is a great way to do service for Circle K members and help out those who really need it.

NYCKI Sails Around the World

What are you doing from November 7th until November 9th? Are you preparing to gasp for air as you shove your way through the mob of stumbling students to go downtown? Or are you going to anxiously “replace all” your periods and commas to font size fourteen so you can just reach the five page minimum of that paper that will be due in an hour? Instead of doing the predictable, you should fill out a registration form, pack your bags, and represent the Bearcats at New York Circle K’s New York Speaking Conference: NYCKI Sails Around the World!

This nautical themed marks New York Circle K International’s 33rd year anniversary of providing this weekend of professional and leadership development to the District. The weekend will be jam-packed with workshops, fellowship activities, and service projects! The conference is held in Lake George, New York and it basically sits on the water. If that background does not sound like a recipe for one hundred Facebook likes, then what does? If this is something that tickles your fancy, do not hesitate to ask members of the BU E-Board for more information. Also, feel free to contact the New York Speaking Chair, Susan Xiong, at susan.xiong@nycirclek.org!

What Happens After You Do the Dues?

As the Treasurer of Binghamton Circle K for a second year, I went into the process with a slight advantage and I really tried to use that advantage. I attempted to make the process as smooth as possible to avoid some mistakes made last year. The goal was also to get dues in much earlier than last year. With all of this in mind, and with the help of former and current Presidents Walaa Ahmed and Jerry Cimo, we began collecting dues at our second meeting in September. Jerry really did a great job of explaining to members how important dues were and why members should. Written By

Jerry created a Google Document, which was really helpful in organizing a list of who has been and it also allowed us to keep notes on different members for special situations. Columns for e-mail address and graduation year really made for a simple process of transferring the information to the Membership Update Center (MUC). I also updated MUC as I was receiving dues rather than all at once, unlike last year. Overall, we have about 33 due-paying members so far and hope to gain even more members!

All About That Spotlight

This month’s Event Spotlight illuminates Circle K’s 1st Halloween Social! Wait, you did not go? Boy, you made the worst decision of your life. You over there went? Oh, I know, it was so much fun, especially Jerry’s Reno 911 costume. Our very own Julia Dunnigan provided us with the activities while Jerry graced us with his eclectic playlist. Who would have thought that Paula Abdul would follow Sean Kingston? After everyone bonded with each other by mummifying members in toilet paper and dangling mini-doughnuts in the air, we sat down to view our Snapchat slideshow and Hocus Pocus! #Yabos Hands down, one of the most fun socials we have ever had!

This month’s Member Spotlight surrounds two faces, Amy Boglarski and Nicole Radova. These lovely ladies did what no one else had the guts to do – they stepped up and took hold of club leadership positions. As we all know, our current Vice President, Stacy Villalva, is studying abroad in Ireland next semester (So exciting!), so someone needs to take her place. This is where Amy swooped in and saved the day! Krishna Tejani had to resign as International Project Committee Chair, but Nicole made sure not to leave that spot vacant. Congratulations to the both of you! Amy, you are moving on up. Nicole, welcome to the Executive Board!
